Dr. Elizabeth Wako, M.D., the first Black woman and president and CEO of Swedish Health Services in Seattle, pathway as a health care professional is unique and very inspiring. Born in Ethiopia, her family immigrated to the United States when she was just three months old. Wako began her career as a registered nurse caring for psychiatric patients, then transitioned to anesthesiology before pursuing an MBA and moving into the business side of health care.
The daughter of a nurse and an educator, Wako says that she was deeply influenced by her parents. However, witnessing the impact that her mother had on the lives of the patients that she cared for as a nurse is what inspired her to pursue a career in health care.
“We came from Ethiopia, and my parents came on a green card because my mom was a nurse, and my father came to get his master’s degree,” Wako said. “We ended up getting stuck in Ethiopia as the political environment changed, but we eventually found ourselves living in Walla Walla, Washington, with my father, a tenured professor at a college.”
“I was finishing my senior year in high school and at that point I kind of had to make a decision about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Wako continued. “My mom was in health care and my father was in education, so there’s obviously a tendency to follow the path of your parents and my mom just won out on that battle.”
Over a career spanning 30 years, Wako started as a registered nurse working with psychiatric patients. Realizing she wanted to make an even greater impact, she attended medical school in Utah, completed a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in perioperative medicine at the University of Washington, and earned an MBA from UW’s Foster School of Business.
“I started nursing school at Walla Walla Community College. It was a two-year program, and you graduate as an RN,” says Wako. “While I was in nursing school, I made the decision to continue my education and become a physician. So, I completed my associates, and I transferred to the University of Washington where I finished my degree with a Bachelor of Science in zoology and a minor in classics. I love classics.”
Since joining Swedish in 2011, Wako has held numerous leadership roles, including chief medical officer for the First Hill campus, chief operating officer for First Hill, and chief executive for both First Hill and Cherry Hill campuses. According to R. Omar Riojas, Chair of the Swedish Board of Trustees, her appointment as president and CEO marks a series of firsts for the 113-year-old organization.
“Dr. Wako’s appointment represents a number of historic firsts for Swedish,” says Riojas. “She is the first woman and the first African American to lead the organization. As a nurse, physician, woman of color, wife, and mother of four, she brings a unique perspective that is critical in shaping health-care delivery.”
It is this unique perspective based on her vast array of experiences that has shape her leadership and decision-making philosophies when it comes to health care.
Under her leadership, Wako is overseeing new construction as Swedish is expanding its capabilities and technology. Wako’s priorities for the future are strengthening access and technology.
A centerpiece of this expansion is the construction of two new facilities to provide patients and the community with more resources and services — the North Tower, a major addition to the Swedish campus, and the new main surgery facility.
According to Wako, the North Tower project will add 750,000 square feet to an already existing 1.5 million square foot facility, and the new operation room will feature 24 new operating rooms and 72 new IC U beds that are acuity adaptable.
“I’m always excited to talk about the North Tower. It is, I think, one of the most exciting things we have going on our campus,” says Wako. “Certainly, for our caregivers, for our patients and really for the community.”
“[As it relates to the new surgery center], if you come in sick as an IC U patient, you can stay in the same room until you get discharged. So, as you improve, we don’t have to move you out of your room, you’ll be able to continue to receive services right there.”
Despite the exciting developments, Wako acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead, particularly as it relates to access to in primary care.
“The next 10 years will be pivotal,” Wako said. “Baby boomers are signing up for Medicare at around 10,000 a day. Imagine that 10,000 people signing up for Medicare a day. And what’s important to know about Medicare is that it signifies that the population is aging and as the population ages, they use our resources more. [The challenge is] really about making sure that we have enough primary care for our patients to be able to access [the care that they need].”
Even with the great demand that her role places on her time, the health care provider in Wako reinforces the need to take time for herself. She makes a conscious effort in maintaining a sustainable balance between work life and her personal life to make sure that she stays grounded in the midst of a changing society.
“I work really hard to maintain my relationship with my friends and my family outside of work,” says Wako.
“So, the caveat to that is I love cooking, I love having people over, I love dinner parties,” she says with a cheerful grin and laugh. “Those are the things that make me happy and kind of rejuvenate my soul.”

Nitrosamine itself is a class of organic compounds formed between secondary
Nitrous acid or nitrite salts (nitrosating agent)
are classified as highly potent mutagenic compounds and referred to as the 'cohort of concern' (COC) compounds
nitrosamine impurities have the potential to be DNA reactive and are hence considered as mutagenic as well as carcinogenic
the detection of dimethyl nitrosamine (NDMA) impurities in pharmaceutical products (valsartan) laid the foundation for extensive regulations and guidelines to monitor nitrosamine contamination in medicines
Therefore having sensitive nitrosamine detection technology is majorly important to maintain these standards
Pesticides are essential excipients for growing crops
they can contribute to health complications in humans or be harmful for the environment

In addition to being the unfortunate target of Godzilla's ire from the original 1954 movie to the recent film Godzilla Minus One
the building houses a department store selling everything from handbags and jewelry to some of the rarest watches from the Seiko brands
With the long history of Wako and the Seiko brands
it makes sense that it would also be a perfect location to sell a few exclusive limited editions
Grand Seiko has a long tradition of "Wako exclusive" models
My first in-person exposure to any of the Wako limited edition releases was a display at the iconic department store itself
surrounding a column not far from the stairs
is a display of some of the most important moments in Grand Seiko's history
as well as the watches that you could only get at Wako over the years
One common theme with many of the Wako editions is the inclusion of very heavily stylistic Breguet numerals and a variety of dial treatments
This creates an aesthetic that basically doesn't exist for any other options in their lineup
the placement of "Seiko" at the top of the dial further underscores that the Wako pieces use a design language outside the norm for the brand
The SBGH241 that I was able to go "hands-on" with came out in 2018 as a high-beat automatic release in the same case design as the SBGR251 and 253 – 37mm by 13.3mm thick – housing the 9S85 movement
This creamy sunburst dial has hash marks on the minute track
large polished markers at the five-minute intervals
and 12 "Breguet" numeral layout that makes it stand out
the watch checks a lot of the other boxes that you'd want from a Grand Seiko
even if the movement is a bit on the older side for a brand that innovates rapidly
The case has a solid amount of Zaratsu polish as well
something well worth the relatively affordable price – around 800,000 yen if memory serves
you could end up picking one up in Japan for around $5,000-$5,500
This is a limited release but not a numbered edition
so it's possible that a new replacement could come sometime soon
you should keep in mind that traveling to Japan itself can cost a lot; it's not exactly a short trip for those of us based in the U.S
If your budget is constrained or you're not a sentimental type looking to get the full experience of buying the watch at Wako
you can find these on the secondary market for around $4,500
you'll have a Grand Seiko that looks a lot different than almost any other you'll see at your next meetup
Another Wako exclusive that caught my eye was this new SBGH357 with a pinkish-orange dial
When I toured the Flagship Boutique I immediately gravitated toward this watch
as the pink hue reminded me a bit of the now-famous Shunbun
Unlike the more natural-looking Shunbun dial
which makes sense for the theme of "Autumn Twilight," as seen from the Wako boutique in Ginza
Rolex has notably used the linen texture on their dials in the past
but it's still so uncommon that the interesting effect alone won some points in my book
There's a display caseback showing the 9S85 movement
like seen in the other Wako release I just showed you
While I don't think this has the same potential for icon status as other Grand Seikos
the fact that such an interesting dial flew under the radar means it was well worth the time to check out
I'm pretty sure there will be a number of people who are upset they didn't hear about it sooner
Reservations for the watch started the day before I arrived in Japan
If you're sore about missing out on the last watch
The good news is the SBGH283 is a special edition that's still available if you want one
The bad news is that it's not as easy as simply going to Tokyo
you'll have to either make the six-hour drive or two-and-a-half hour train ride to Morioka station in Iwate Prefecture and then take around a 20-30 minute cab ride to Studio Shizukuishi
Grand Seiko's home for mechanical watchmaking
you'll have a chance to tour the studio (though you will have to book all of this in advance) and
this one features the 9S85 high-beat automatic movement with a three o'clock date
It is housed in a 40mm by 13.3mm stainless steel case
so it is a bit more balanced than the first Wako piece
The dial on the SBGH283 is notoriously hard to capture
but as you start to play with angles and highlights
meant to evoke the forests surrounding the studio and play a significant part in the brand's nature-inspired identity
It also evokes a bit of the wood paneling inside and outside the studio
the watch features a gold-toned "Shizukuishi Limited" rotor
it's not enough to sway me one way or another
it all comes down to the dial and how sentimental you feel about Shizukuishi
I had my eye set on another Grand Seiko that I hoped to pick up in Japan – the SLGW003
I decided to wait until I was stateside to pick something up
the Shizukuishi model really is certainly attractive
and I was incredibly impressed by my time with Grand Seiko in Japan
It certainly would have made a nice token to remember the trip
but unless I want to buy one on the secondary market (and they do pop up)
I'll just have to make the trip back in the future

The Elephant
Before the Wako Draft Constitution of 2005
there was the Wako Constitutional Amendment Bill of 1992 that seemed to promise the opening up of the political space
When it comes to the Constitution of Kenya
everyone remembers the so-called Wako Draft which was rejected in the 21 November 2005 referendum
But perhaps only a few recall Kenya’s longest serving Attorney General’s first attempt to reform the constitution in 1992
As Katiba Week is relegated to the past and recedes into the rearview mirror until next year
I dig into the newspaper archives at the MacMillan Library and into my own files to put together the story of the 1992 Wako Bill
formally known as the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Act
Was the Wako Bill the work of a reformist working within the constraints of a famously reactionary system
Was it a cynical red herring aimed at getting foreign donors to loosen the purse strings
Or was it one of President Moi’s trial balloons?
The Wako Draft was named after its principal author
It was the result of tinkering with the so-called Bomas Draft
by AG Wako and Parliament’s Select Committee on Constitution Review.
the Bomas Draft got its name because it was prepared by the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC) and endorsed by a National Constitution Conference held at the Bomas of Kenya
In November 2005, ahead of the referendum to reject or ratify the Wako Draft, IRIN News, now known as The New Humanitarian explained here: “The Wako Draft is the final result of a complicated “people-driven” process to rewrite the constitution
which began with the enactment of the Constitution of Kenya Review Act of 1997.
“One of the objectives of the review was to reduce the excessive powers vested in the presidency
Another was to decentralise the government and bring it closer to the people
“These objectives and other rights-based issues were incorporated in the so-called Bomas Draft
was by no means a consensus: Some of the delegates to the Bomas assembly walked out in disagreement before the final document was put to vote
produced the Naivasha Draft and finally the Wako Draft
the subject of the referendum on Monday [November 21
“The Bomas Draft has been consigned to history
though it remains the reference document for those opposed to the Wako Draft.”
the 2005 Wako Draft was not Amos Wako’s first constitutional rodeo
less than a year after his surprise appointment as AG in May 1991
Amos Wako had come up with another draft to amend Kenya’s much amended 1963 Constitution
might have completely changed all future conversations about that constitution
Wako announced that a Bill would be presented to parliament seeking to amend the constitution
the abolition of the Vice President’s post and provide for the appointment of a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister
The Bill also proposed that the president be elected directly by the voters
as well as a limit to the presidential tenure of office to two five-year terms
there were no presidential term limits in Kenya
Clause 6 of the Bill would have enabled the incumbent to remain in office until the person elected as president in a subsequent presidential election took office.
The proposed amendments to Section 6 of the Constitution would also have empowered the president to appoint the Speaker of the National Assembly to deputise for him in case of illness
it stipulated that the Speaker would not act
except in accordance with a resolution of the cabinet in exercising powers relating to the preservation of public security; prorogation and dissolution of parliament and the appointment of a prime minister and his deputy ministers
Clause 5 of the Bill would have enabled the Speaker of the National Assembly to act when the office of the president was vacant until a presidential election was held
The Bill also gave the president the power to call a referendum whenever he considered it necessary in respect of any issue
the president would have to receive a recommendation from parliament
supported by votes of no less than 65 per cent of all MPs
would be directed by the Electoral Commission in the manner prescribed under parliament.
the president would also have powers to sack or appoint civil servants
with the advice of the Public Service Commission.
Other amendments proposed in the bill were that the president would have to vacate office if he was found to have acted in wilful violation and disregard of the constitution
and if the issue has been referred to a referendum.
he would be entitled to pension allowances
adequate security staff and travel allowance
The Bill stipulated: “Such benefits shall not be varied during the President’s lifetime.”
the prime minister would have executive power and would be appointed from the National Assembly
The prime minister would have to be from the political party which the president considers the best able to command the support of the majority of members of the National Assembly
the president would have to give preference to the party with the majority of MPs in parliament
The Bill stated that the president could remove the prime minister if parliament passed a resolution of no confidence and the prime minister failed to resign within three days
The prime minister could also be removed if after a general election there were changes regarding the party with the majority of seats
The Bill provided for the appointment of a deputy prime minister in consultation with the prime minister.
the deputy prime minister and cabinet ministers would have to relinquish any positions they held in private companies
The Bill stated that the president was entitled to attend any meeting of the cabinet if requested by the prime minister
“The Prime Minister shall also be leader of the government business in Parliament
and shall coordinate the work of the cabinet
he shall keep the President informed of the general conduct of government and furnish him with any information he may require.”
Section 46 of the 1963 Constitution was also proposed for amendments
stipulating the exercise of legislative power of parliament and providing for the president to dissolve parliament after consultation with the prime minister and the Speaker.
Clause 27 of the Wako Bill defined the powers of the president in parliament
“He shall be entitled to address parliament and communicate trade through the speaker
and can attend all proceedings and vote if he wishes.”
The proposed amendments also stipulated the qualifications of those intending to contest the presidency and said that candidates would have to be nominated by a political party that took part in a general election and garnered the support of no less than 51 per cent of voters
Reflecting Kenya’s political past since independence where it was normal for there to be only one presidential candidate
the Bill said: “Where only one candidate for President is nominated
In a memorandum of objects and reasons accompanying the Bill
Wako explained that the Bill also provided for the holding of a referendum and extended the functions of the Electoral Commission to include directing and supervising local government elections
The wide-ranging Bill was seen as an attempt to introduce minimum reforms ahead of that year’s expected first multi-party elections in over two decades
Other measures it contained included provisions for legal aid in cases where a substantial allegation of infringement of human rights
The Bill also recommended the repeal of Section 127 of the constitution
under which the president could make regulations specifically for North-Eastern Province and contiguous districts
The excitement in the country was palpable following the announcement of the Bill and its contents
With this Bill – coming on the heels of the repeal of Section 2A
which made the country a multi-party state once more – Kenya appeared to be on the fast track to change in time for the new dispensation following the first multi-party election expected to take place later in 1992
but still in very many ways Kanu’s and Moi’s Kenya
things were not all they seemed and nothing was ever straightforward
considering the times and the tone in the country
it was all too good to be true and the Bill was not so much for local consumption as it was for those holding the levers of power in donor countries
This appeared to be the view of Kenya’s fledgling opposition parties which
after meeting to discuss the announcement of the Wako Bill
sensed that all was not as it seemed and pretty much dismissed it out of hand
Many saw the Bill as a tactic by Kanu and President Daniel arap Moi to maintain power while giving the appearance of reform
since none of the members of the opposition were MPs
whether the Bill was good or bad did not matter as Kanu MPs would have their merry way
Let me give you a little taste of the political scene at the time
It was a time when there was a lot of talk of constitutional change in the run-up to the December 1991 repeal of Section 2A that returned the country to a multi-party state.
The newly appointed AG Amos Wako suggested that Kenya adopt a system of governance similar to that of France
there was a flurry of excitement among politicians both within the ruling party and without
Some observers even went as far as to suggest that this might be the perfect solution to Kenya’s problem at the time
which was that of a powerful presidency without any practical parliamentary checks and balances or
many observers of Kenyan politics considered Wako to have reformist credentials
especially when held up against his predecessor
President Daniel arap Moi appointed Wako to replace a flagging Justice Matthew Guy Muli whom Moi then returned to the judiciary
this time as a judge of the Court of Appeal
Muli’s tenure as AG since 1983 had been riddled with complaints from the legal fraternity over what was seen as his poor interpretation of the law
one of his promises to Kenyans was that he would examine existing legislation with a view to introducing relevant amendments.
things were beginning to heat up on the political scene
with both local and foreign pressure piling on the Moi government following the murder of Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Robert Ouko in February
Muli’s health came under the spotlight and critics were beginning to ask themselves how much longer he could hang on
Muli was forced to rise in parliament on a point of order to state that he was still the AG
This incident took place following a question by Kandui MP Maurice Makhanu
who had asked in the House who Kenya’s Attorney General was.
Makhanu’s somewhat cheeky question arose due to the fact that Public Works Minister Timothy Mibei had been appointed to perform the duties of the AG in November 1989 when Muli’s poor health saw him leave the country on sick leave
Mibei’s appointment to act as AG had not been revoked.
The sun was beginning to set on Muli’s reign as AG which at the time was second in longevity to that of Charles Njonjo
Wako would have served a record-beating 20 years at Sheria House
There was already a lot of talk in parliament about amending the constitution when Wako took office
Thought to be acting as one of President Moi’s trial balloon testers in parliament
the then Planning and National Development Assistant Minister Noor Abdi Ogle suggested that the constitution be changed to allow for the establishment of a Majimbo (federal) system of government
said he was calling for Majimbo in response to unnamed people whom he said did not want to see Kenya remain a united nation
“There are some government critics who are agitating for political pluralism because they do not want to see us united as one government
we may be forced to call for the amendment of the constitution to pave the way for the establishment of a federal government system.”
Ogle’s statement drew several points of order from MPs who wanted to know on what basis he was talking of a move to establish a federal system of government.
Among those who questioned him was nominated MP Ezekiel Barngetuny
“Does the Assistant Minister want to tell us that each district or province should form its own government
if we cannot stay united as one nation with one central government
I don’t see any reason why we should not pave the way for the creation of a federal system of government
“The Constitution may be amended to create room for each community to form its own government
so that we do not have the kind of squabbles created by multi-party advocates who claim to be speaking on behalf of Kenyans.”
wondered why Ogle wanted to take Kenya back to the Majimbo system of government
the then Health Minister Mwai Kibaki also rose on a point of order and told the House that Ogle was misleading it by saying there was a time when Kenya had a federal system of government.
And if he’s calling for the establishment of something new
Instead of telling us that we will revert to the federal system
we cannot revert to a system which we have never had
saying: “Some of us have only read of Majimbo
if people continue agitating against the government
then we shall amend the constitution so that each community goes its own way.”
who was also the country’s Finance Minister
was in Paris meeting with the Consultative Group of donors and multilateral institutions
basically the people who held the country’s purse strings
Accompanied by planning and national development Minister Zachary Onyonka and the Central Bank of Kenya Governor Eric Kotut
Saitoti was on a vital mission to beg the donors to reduce their chokehold on Kenya’s finances
As well as calling for specific financial and economic reforms
the donors made it clear that there would be no support forthcoming unless there were political reforms
delegates underlined that good governance is a prerequisite for equitable economic development
and would therefore be a major factor in influencing aid allocations
Donors stressed the need for early implementation of political reforms to reinforce the benefits of economic structural change.”
when Kanu’s 3,600-strong special National Delegates Conference met at Kasarani Sports Complex on 3 December 1991
a week after the Paris meeting with donors
the party which had sworn never to allow multi-party democracy did a political about-turn and voted overwhelmingly to repeal Section 2A and to pursue multi-party democracy
the then French Ambassador to Kenya Pierre Auzimour gave an interesting interview to the Kenya Times newspaper
the relationship between France and Kenya was characterised by diplomatic and economic cooperation
France had significant economic interests in Kenya
particularly in sectors like infrastructure
The most notable example was the Turkwel Gorge Dam built under the auspices of the Kerio Valley Development Authority between 1986 and 1991 through a partnership of the Kenyan and French governments
expressed concerns about human rights and governance issues in Kenya
pushing for reforms while balancing its strategic interests in the region
“We talked a little about politics and a lot about the economy
there is no doubt that a great deal of pressure was put on the Kenyan delegation to link international aid to internal decisions made by the Kenya government.
by the fact that certain delegations were still not really aware of the true situation in the country
perhaps because they were composed exclusively of officials from their capitals.
“This allowed Vice President Saitoti to specify things
to mention decisions taken by Kenya over the last few months
and also indicate very clearly that new steps would be taken without delay in matters of pluralism
The atmosphere has improved hour by hour as discussions have been going on
especially after the introduction of multi-party politics
which has just been decided on here in Kenya.”
Amos Wako was dispatched to London where he met with an all-party group on overseas development at the House of Commons
In keeping with Kenya’s long unwritten tradition of briefing foreign governments on developments in Kenya before informing Kenyans about them
Wako duly informed the group that Kenya had undergone major political changes and reforms as it approached its first multi-party general election
It was at this meeting that Wako hinted at what would soon be known as the Wako Bill
He told the British politicians that amendments to the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections Act were being worked out for presentation to the cabinet.
Wako told them that he was looking into amendments of various acts to give effect to the multi-party system
“I hope to submit the proposed amendments to the cabinet shortly
they will be debated by Parliament when it resumes.”
waited to see what parliament would decide
the Kanu parliamentary group met under the chairmanship of President Moi and directed the AG to withdraw the Bill which had been gazetted only a week earlier
probably the fact that if the Bill passed and became law
There was also the fear that they could not predict how the elections would go
it was already looking as though Kanu might be decimated at the polls and this new Bill
the main reason for the withdrawal of the Bill was that it had not convinced the country’s donors to loosen the purse strings
Moi and Kanu probably figured there was no point going so far without reciprocity
All the political and economic acrobatics – with the repeal of 2A and the promised constitutional changes – had only led to a slight loosening of the purse strings
What few coins were released were often tied to specific conditions related to governance and democratisation and the relationship with the donors continued to be characterised by tension and conditionality.
the so-called tribal clashes began and the ruling party’s group of young hired guns – also known as Youth for Kanu 1992 of YK’92 – was formed
the motion to reject the Wako Bill was introduced at the Kanu parliamentary meeting by none other than Planning and National Development Assistant Minister Noor Abdi Ogle
He said that the Bill mentioned the formation of a transitional government
and argued that such a government was not provided for the constitution
Ogle made it sound to the group as though the Bill’s main aim was to topple the Moi presidency
conveniently ignoring the fact that the Bill had been supported by the cabinet chaired by Moi before it was gazetted
the Kanu parliamentary group meeting also resolved that President Moi would hold office until the multi-party election results were announced
the Wako Bill was significant in that it promised to open up the political space
Its shelving meant that Kenya’s deeper structural and institutional issues would continue to plague the political landscape for almost two decades more before the 2010 Constitution
which incorporated some of the ideas in the 1992 Wako Bill

Competitors from across the nation fought for contention to represent America at the WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations) Junior World Championships in Budapest
61 athletes and a coaching staff of 10 will represent America at the World Championships August 23-September 1st at BOK Sports Hall
USA Kickboxing sanctions competition in two disciplines
the organization is spearheading Kickboxing towards the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane
“This was our most competitive and largest nationals to date
We are confident in our junior athletes headed to Budapest in August and our senior athletes competing in Chile [Vina del Mar] in October
Tatami champions from Chile will earn a slot in the prestigious World Games in Chengdu
we inch one step closer to an Olympic birth.” USA Kickboxing is the only U.S
The athletes compete at the highest of levels
qualifying in our National Championship Tournaments to earn their spots on the team to compete internationally at the Pan-American Championships
WAKO USA serves as the gateway to the Olympics
The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) the National Governing Body for the sport under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee
The league alternates with Junior and Senior World Championships every other year

rabbits have been recognized for their ability to produce antibodies with higher specificity and affinity compared to mice and rats
the lack of a myeloma cell line for rabbits as a fusion cell strain made it challenging to use the hybridoma method to produce monoclonal antibodies
Fujifilm has developed a new platform which overcomes these issues
combining the strengths of the DNA immunization method with their proprietary single B-cell screening technique to produce high-performance
high-affinity monoclonal antibodies against soluble antigens or transmembrane antigens
The antibodies produced using this platform are not only high-performing but also capable of recognizing complex three-dimensional structures and challenging targets such as multipass transmembrane proteins
The platform can also be adapted according to a customer’s specific needs
The DNA immunization method has a high success rate in generating antibodies against membrane proteins and complex conformational epitopes
which are often challenging to target using conventional peptide or protein antigens due to their inability to mimic native protein structures
Fujifilm’s proprietary Single B-Cell Screening method enables antibodies with high affinity to be acquired
due to the direct selection of individual B cells that produce high-affinity antibodies against the target antigen
This is in contrast to the hybridoma method
where the fusion process can sometimes result in lower-affinity antibodies
Single B-Cell Screening also results in more positive clones
providing a broader pool of high-quality antibodies to choose from
Cyclic peptides have emerged as promising therapeutic candidates due to their ability to target 'undruggable' proteins with enhanced stability and bioavailability compared to linear peptides or small molecules
Traditional small molecules and antibodies often struggle to bind complex targets
particularly in protein-protein interactions (PPIs)
Fujifilm’s platform overcomes these limitations by utilizing a vast cyclic peptide library
to screen and identify candidates with high affinity
Fujifilm’s proprietary screening process rapidly identifies peptides that maintain strong binding to complex targets
These peptides exhibit key advantages such as improved tissue permeability
which make them especially useful in drug discovery for cancer
High-throughput screening ensures rapid lead identification
facilitating the discovery of novel cyclic peptides that can function as inhibitors
or components of peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs)
This service is ideal for development of novel therapeutics targeting difficult proteins

“I loved the camp because I got to fight the older female competitors and they pushed me to be my best.” Viola Jr
“Besides our junior athletes like Gabby headed to Budapest
we are sending senior athletes to Chile [Vina del Mar] in October
Tatami champions from Chile will earn a slot in the prestigious World Games in Chengdu
We are truly making a mark around the world
We are the Olympic movement for Kickboxing in the United States
If you want to compete at the highest level of professionalism for sport karate
The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) is the National Governing Body for the sport under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee
“The current junior team will be at the perfect age for a potential Kickboxing debut at the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane
We are a recognized Olympic sport; we just need to gain medal status
WAKO league alternates with Junior and Senior World Championships every other year
the Adult Team members set sight on Abu Dhabi

She has built Japanese language instruction from the ground up at Amherst
where her own “stage-step approach” textbooks have been a game-changer
but Tawa’s thoughts on teaching foreign languages are complex
where she hung a similar in-use sign on the door (“My students will just walk in otherwise!”)
and graciously offered me some of her wisdom on the subject.
Q: What is lacking in how we have historically taught foreign languages to native English speakers
A: We can’t really talk about teaching without understanding how human beings learn
The biggest issue is ignoring individual differences
but they also have to learn four different skills: speaking
each skill does not transfer to the other.
Q: Can you summarize your stage-step technique?
A: I see a forced dichotomy in the field: Do we teach communication or do we teach grammar
Because communication is possible only when the listener and speaker share common abstract rules
Many educators are not really defining what grammar is
It’s not just verb forms and structure; it’s usage that makes communication possible
Even if a student is able to create a perfect sentence
if that perfect sentence is used in the wrong situation
The stage-step technique is breaking down learning foreign languages into the conceptual part and the skills part—the stages being about concept and the steps being about skill
speaking—under the umbrella of a certain stage of conceptualization
what’s useful to Student A may not be useful to Student B
so another goal of the stage-step technique is to teach them metacognition
We teach them how to study and how to learn on their own
Teachers are not information providers; we’re facilitators of learning
Q: Japanese is considered a “Category IV” language
the Foreign Service Institute (a division of the U.S
State Department) categorized languages into four groups—“one” being the easiest to learn
That terminology is confusing because it’s not referring to absolute difficulty
It’s measuring the distance between English and the target language
their research found a Category I language (Spanish
Swedish) took 600–750 class hours to learn
grammar is something you understand and do automatically
but we lose that ability after a certain age
For a college student who’s never heard Japanese
it requires a more elaborate system.
Grammar is the nitty gritty but it also encompasses the bigger picture—let’s redefine it

Left: Makie-e chinkin box "Night Play" 27 x 13 x 12 cm Yasunori Sakamoto Right: Kinran hand-painted ceramic box diameter 8.5 x height 15 cm Yukio Yoshida
Ishikawa Prefecture was hit by the earthquake in January last year and the torrential rains in September
Works by lacquer artists and ceramic artists from the prefecture who have overcome these two merciless natural disasters and continue to create are adorning the sixth floor of Seiko House
The exhibition is called "Ishikawa Crafts - Lacquer and Ceramics"
Come and see the fruits of the sincere creative work of these craftsmen who have continued to work on their art despite the difficult circumstances
fleeting colors are in perfect harmony with the brilliance of the gold leaf
and this perfect harmony is covered with a gentle milky white color like a spring mist
It is as if an impressionist painter had used watercolors to paint a light-filled Japanese spring on canvas
it goes far beyond the conventional concept of "Kinrande"
it is a pottery with a mysterious expression that makes it feel as if it is made of pottery
"Golden brocade colored water fingers" diameter 17.5 x height 15.5 cm
Yoshida is the fourth generation owner of Kinzangama Kiln
has been recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for his technique of "Yurikinsai."
there are various techniques for this Kutani ware
the technique of "kinsai" using gold leaf has been passed down for generations
most of the pottery is made in bright colors
"Colored gold cup" diameter 6.2 x height 6.2 cm
"I grew up in the birthplace of Kutani ware
and from an early age I was close to the pottery made by my father and other generations of pottery
Among the various overglaze ware techniques
the 'underglaze gold color' that my father used is an extremely difficult technique in which a pattern is painted with gold leaf or gold paint
then glaze is applied on top and the ware is fired
While inheriting this technique from my father
I also repeatedly tried and tested to create my own unique colors
I arrived at a new method of expression that does not mix colors
but instead layers pale colors with Western paints to create a variety of colors
and adds the "Kinrande" technique of baking gold leaf on top
It can be said that this technique was only possible thanks to the traditions of "Kinzan Kiln."
They collect the remaining pieces of gold leaf that have been cut up and used
then knead them together to make gold powder
The gold leaf itself is also custom-made to a thickness unique to Kinzangama
it is possible to create a brilliant gold effect
"The recent rise in the price of gold is a bit of a headache
To layer pale colors and create a variety of different tones
the piece must be fired in the kiln many times
as many as seven or eight firings are required
the final product must be visualized in advance
it would take a long time to hand-draw sketches of the finished product
Yoshida has been working on a project to speed up the sketch creation process by teaming up with a technician in a certain field; that field is the study of generative art
Developed in collaboration with Alexis Andre
a researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories
the tool is an art production tool in which a computer that has learned Yoshida's style of work generates the painting for the vessel
Yoshida himself manipulates various variables on the screen
and selects and adopts the ideas generated by the computer to complete the sketch
the power of computers has expanded the possibilities to obtain images that were previously unimaginable
An image generated by the tool named "Tomonami" (left) and a work created by Yoshida based on that (right). (This work is not exhibited at the exhibition. The image is fromSony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc., Tokyo, Japan (Reprinted from
"Being involved in this development was a good opportunity to think anew about what traditional crafts are
It involves making sure to incorporate the techniques that have been passed down as your own
while at the same time not neglecting to look to the future and take on new challenges
I believe that this is the reason why traditional crafts have been able to continue to exist until now
What my father has been doing for many years
the new colors that I have created through trial and error and the complex expressions that these colors create
and creating final sketches using a computer - all of these are forms of traditional crafts that will be passed down to the next generation."
Chinkin and Maki-e are decorative techniques for lacquer
It takes a long time to master just one of these techniques
but lacquer artist Yasunori Sakamoto has mastered both and is able to use both in a single piece with mastery
"I have been studying Chinkin since I was young
My wife was the daughter of a lacquer artist
so I learned the techniques from my father-in-law and was able to do lacquer work."
there are not many makers in Wajima who can use both techniques with ease
Chinkin is a technique in which a pattern is carved into the surface with a blade and gold leaf or powder is then sunk into it
Maki-e is a technique in which a pattern is drawn on the surface of lacquerware with lacquer and then gold powder is sprinkled on before the lacquerware dries
Although both are lacquerware decoration techniques
but the expressions and atmospheres are completely different
It is actually quite difficult to combine two decorations with different expressions and atmospheres in one piece
I think about it a lot from the very first stage
when I imagine the finished product and draw a rough sketch
deciding on Chinkin in this part and Maki-e in this part
The rough sketch has a big influence on the quality of the finished product."
titled "Night Play," depicts fireflies flying about on a summer night
sad light they emit is a collection of extremely tiny gold particles
which shine for a moment in the pitch black darkness
The almost fantastical sparkle is produced by the mind-bogglingly detailed work of drilling tiny holes into the surface of the lacquer and sinking the gold particles into them
Makie lacquer box "Night Play" 27 x 13 x 12 cm
Fireflies fly around a riverside overgrown with ferns
softly reflect the light emitted by the fireflies
The subdued glow of the mother-of-pearl is perhaps the sparkle of the flowing river water
This dreamily beautiful scene is a unique world that could only be achieved by Sakamoto
One of the techniques of maki-e is called "rankaku" (egg shell)
It is a technique that literally uses egg shells
Quail or chicken egg shells are crushed into small pieces
pasted onto lacquer and then coated with a top coat
The small pieces of egg shell that were pasted onto the lacquer emerge as beautiful patterns
This technique is said to have started in the Edo period
and "It'll be nice if it's sunny" depicts large white hydrangeas blooming in the rain
Eggshell lacquer box "It'd be nice if it was sunny" 13.5 x 28 x 12 cm
If you look closely at each petal of a hydrangea
you will see that it is covered with small pieces of eggshell
so densely that the word "densely" is appropriate
It is like a jigsaw puzzle made of eggshells
There are so many pieces of eggshell that it is difficult to count how many pieces of eggshell are used in one petal
The accumulation of petals becomes a large hydrangea
The blue of the falling raindrops is painted with mother-of-pearl
and the hydrangea leaves are painted with chinkin
this work was completed after a mind-boggling amount of work
but perhaps the lines of the petals and raindrops give it a somewhat modern feel
I have been trying to incorporate the expression and movement of flowing water into my work
The rain depicted in mother-of-pearl is one such attempt
so I create patterns from scenery that I have been familiar with since childhood and that stick in my mind
so we naturally hear songs that young people listen to
For both "Yayuugi" and "Haretara Iine," the artist names and song titles of the songs we heard on the radio gave us hints for the names of the pieces
Maki-e box "Wind Concerto" 13 x 21 x 12 cm
Sakamoto-san removed the cover of "It'll be Nice If It's Sunny." Hidden on the side of the cover was a beautiful rainbow floating in the sky after the rain
Although Sakamoto's home was damaged in last year's earthquake
his studio and tools were not significantly affected
and he was fortunate to be able to start making lacquer in the fall
there are many craftsmen and artists in Wajima whose studios and even their homes were damaged
leaving them unable to continue making lacquer
Wishing from the bottom of his heart that these people will be able to return to their crafts as soon as possible
Sakamoto continues to silently face the lacquer in his studio today
In addition to the two artists we spoke to
the following nine others are exhibiting in this exhibition:
works by the following artists will be on display as special exhibits:
[Ceramics] Yoshida Yoshinori and Nakata Kazuo
Time: 11:00 – 19:00 until 17:00 on the last day
He has been a member of the editorial department of Fujingaho
a long-established women's magazine founded in 38
and has researched and written manuscripts on a variety of Japanese culture
including traditional Japanese crafts such as pottery and lacquer art
he is in charge of articles for Premium Japan about Ryuho Sasaoka
head of the Sasaoka school of the Miso-ryu school
the fourth head of the Onoue school and third generation head of the Onoue school
She has visited Kyoto many times over the years
but there are rumors that she knows more about izakaya than about Japanese culture

I switched to nuclear experiments for my bachelor thesis
I learned about the connection between astronomical phenomena and nuclear physics in an intensive course and became interested in the contribution nuclear research can make to the understanding of astronomical phenomena
so I decided to continue my research in this field
■What kind of research were you involved in before coming to KEK
I was involved in the devalopment and research at the KEK Isotope Separation System(KISS)
who headed the nuclear experiment laboratory at KEK
I joined an experiment led by a professor in the laboratory at the university called the Rare RI Ring (R3)
an instrument for precise mass measurement of nuclei
and participated in the development of a high time-resolution time-of-flight detector and in experiments to measure the mass of neutron-rich Ni isotopes
I was given the opportunity to work at KISS again at RIKEN
a detector for decay measurements combined with precise mass measurements
isotope shift measurements of neutron-rich tungsten isotopes and decay spectroscopy of 187Ta
I worked for one year at the Graduate School of Engineering
where I worked on applied radiation measurements and laser spectroscopy that I had done in my previous research
■What kind of research do you hope to pursue at KEK
I would like to advance our understanding of the astronomical environments in which heavy elements originate
the bottleneck is that we do not know the properties of neutron-rich nuclei that are thought to be synthesized in astronomical environments
and we need to clarify their properties experimentally
We are currently working on a plan to upgrade KISS
an experimental instrument for producing and spectroscopy neutron-rich nuclei
which have been difficult to access using conventional methods
The experimental techniques required are not necessarily well established
The process of advancing spectroscopy of unknown nuclides toward the target nuclides and accumulating knowledge is also meaningful
and I would like to work on it enthusiastically
■Can you share your method of refreshing your mind when facing difficulties in research and work

a healthcare professional with over 30 years of experience
has been appointed as the interim President and CEO of Swedish Health Services
In the 115-year history of Swedish Health Services
Wako is the first Black woman to hold this position
We have some big projects that we are working on and that I am excited about as I begin this new chapter,” says Wako
“I am excited to be a part of an expansion of the First Hill campus and we have work to do to replace operating rooms at First Hill so managing through the expansion is going to be huge for us.”
Wako’s family moved from Africa to Fort Wayne
The family later moved to Walla Wall when her father had and opportunity to teach at a local college.
her parents inspired her to pursue a career in medicine
“My mom was a nurse and my dad a professor and my mother
this inspired me to go into medicine and the encouragement from both of my parents propelled me into this field.”
Wako’s desire to make a difference in the lives of patients stems from her sister’s negative experience with the healthcare system
going through that and seeing how and what care looked like for her
and I wanted to make a difference,” says Wako
“In that experience and realizing what making a difference looks like in healthcare and when you’re willing to put the time and energy into learning about your patients
caring about your patients and seeing them as human beings
it was in that moment and an easy decision to continue in healthcare and becoming a physician was where I could make a difference.”
Starting her career as a psychiatric nurse
Wako later went onto medical school completing her residency in anesthesiology as well as a fellowship in perioperative medicine at the University of Washington
Upon completing residency and her fellowship
Wako also earned an MBA from the University of Washington Foster School of Business
Since joining Swedish in 2011 Wako has served in key executive throughout her career
Wako has prioritized the well-being and considerations of patients
“The difference in what I do now versus being an anesthesiologist
being a physician and even going as far back as when I was nursing
your ability to make a difference is on a grand scale as opposed to one patient at a time,” says Wako
“I can make a difference in all of King County
As a Black woman and a healthcare professional with extensive experience
Wako fully recognizes that significance of her appointment
“I am excited to have the opportunity to make a difference
and to be able to bring my experience and background to the table in a leadership position,” says Wako
“This is an exciting time to be part of the team
and I look forward to making a positive impact on the healthcare industry.”
I hadn’t heard any of Wako’s music until now. But I was aware of this Norwegian quartet’s burgeoning reputation and – as documented in posts of 03/02/19 and 19/11/19 – I really enjoyed saxophonist Olsen’s Any Day Now
a live and very lively large ensemble piece inspired by texts by James Baldwin
as well as pianist Mulelid’s ultra-distilled What You Thought Was Home with Bjørn Marius Hegge (b) and Andreas Skår Winther (d) – rating the latter “some of the most captivating music I’ve heard in quite some while”
by a number of further contributors including trumpeter Arve Henriksen (on one track) and that excellent vibraphonist Rob Waring (two tracks)
A string trio is also employed from time to time and there are further touches of colour and texture from diverse participants on keyboards
Each of the core members of Wako supplies a sleeve-note spelling out what fun the record was to make: Poulsen considers the result the band’s “most surprising album to date”
strings-enhanced and chamber-like For Those We Love to the abstracted boogie grooves of Grown-Up Life and the rocking rumbustious fun of Traktererr Du Musikk
– where Henriksen lays down some of the wildest open-horn work I’ve heard from him
There’s plenty of expressive playing and strong swing
both straightahead and off-kilter (check out Hele Verden Er En Boble and Savage Detective) as well as contrasting episodes of brushes-caressed electro-sound washes (Stjerneskipet) and gentle
near Satie-like and reverie-rich Le Tapis Volant
ultimately I found the genre-slipping ‘n’ mixing here to be a touch predictable – and as such
less satisfying than the aforementioned releases from Olsen and Mulelid
vibrantly rendered music too clever by half would be both unfair and inaccurate
there was something about this release that made me shrink from
the prospect of hearing the three final and so-called “bonus” tracks
