The president started his second term fast and furious with a flurry of activity – much of it legally dubious – but analysts say the honeymoon is over
Before the TV cameras on Wednesday, top cabinet officials took turns drenching Donald Trump with praise that some critics found evocative of politics in North Korea
The national security adviser was about to be ousted
Opinion polls told of a president whose unpopularity is historic
After a hundred days in which Trump at times appeared invincible, political gravity is exerting itself. A majority of Americans regard him as both a failure and a would-be dictator. From the courts to the streets, from law offices to college campuses, revolt is swelling. Republicans are eyeing next year’s midterm elections with nervousness.

which Trump dubbed “liberation day” as he announced sweeping global tariffs
His haphazard trade war rattled allies and wiped trillions of dollars off the stock market
Only fears of a bond market catastrophe spooked him into hitting the pause button
But he left in place tariffs on China as high as 145% and Beijing has refused to blink

Tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs
The social security welfare system has reportedly been hit by regional office closures

Trump vowed to be a “dictator” on “day one” but
his pretensions to authoritarianism have been undercut by the ineptitude that derailed his first term and led to a crushing defeat in 2020
He has the lowest approval rating at the 100-day mark of any president in the past 80 years
According to a poll published by the Washington Post newspaper and ABC News
only 39% of Americans approve of how Trump is conducting his presidency

Opposition is manifesting itself in myriad ways and cutting Trump down to size
About 50 of his executive orders have been partially or fully blocked by courts

Charlie Sykes, a conservative author and broadcaster, said: “What Trump had going for him was he created this sense that he was an irresistible force, that resistance was futile, that everyone had to accommodate his whims and his agenda.

Trump is not the first president to feel the pinch of political gravity. Biden started positively but saw his approval rating dip below 50% for the first time in August 2021, following the botched US military withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to an NBC News poll, He never recovered
A sustained backlash against Trump could become a threat to Republicans who, while more devoutly loyal than ever, have to worry about their seats in Congress in the midterm elections in November 2026
Historically the party that holds the White House tends to suffer losses in the midterms
Republicans currently hold a narrow 220-213 majority in the House of Representatives
Patrick Gaspard
a former official in the Barack Obama administration
said: “I would not judge this presidency to be a success
More likely than not we’ll begin to see Republicans whose names are on the ballot in 2026 slowly but clearly moving away from this agenda
It’s very clear that many Trump voters already have buyer’s remorse.”

Sales of Tesla electric vehicles have plunged again in the month of April
down 75 per cent from the year earlier period to just 500 for the month
The sales fall affected both the Model Y electric SUV
ahead of the local launch of the much anticipated refresh model
The data released on Monday by the Electric Vehicle Council shows that just 280 Model Ys were delivered in Australian in April
In the same month a year earlier there were 1166 Model Ys and 911 Model 3s
A fall in the deliveries of the Model Y might have been expected
given that many consumers are waiting for the new version of the Model Y
but Tesla has also been trying to move old stock with discounts of up to $9,000

because of his work with US president Donald Trump and his promotion of far right political causes
the Tesla EVs will not figure in the top five EVs in terms of sales
trailing behind the likes of the BYD Sealion 7
final figures show Tesla ranked 7th and 8th for the month in individual models

The EVC data shows that for the year to date
Tesla sales are down 62 per cent for the first four months of the year
to a total of 5,660 compared to 14,866 in the first four months of 2024
Total sales for the first four months of the year are up 32 per cent to 591 after a rocky start to the year
with 124 sold in April and 369 in the year to date
The Polestar 2 has also seen a slight rebound in April
although that remains 60 per cent below the same period a year earlier

Crude oil prices plunged to a multi-year low following OPEC+’s decision to accelerate production hikes for June
Brent futures slumped as much as 4.6% to $58.50 per barrel
while West Texas Intermediate futures dropped nearly 5% to $55.53 per barrel at a point
both at their lowest levels since February 2021
eight OPEC+ members agreed to raise output by 411,000 barrels per day (bpd) next month
extending the group’s ongoing plan to unwind production cuts that began in April
The cumulative increase will reach 957,000 bpd in June
further weighing on prices already pressured by deteriorating global trade conditions
which accounts for around 40% of global oil supply
has jointly reduced production by approximately 2.2 million bpd in 2023
The quicker-than-expected phased rollback began with a 135,000 bpd increase in April
The acceleration is seen as a punitive measure against members which failed to comply with agreed production quotas
with Kazakhstan and Iraq identified as recent overproducers
“The gradual increases may be paused or reversed subject to evolving market conditions
This flexibility will allow the group to continue to support oil market stability,” OPEC+ said in a statement on Saturday
“The eight OPEC+ countries also noted that this measure will provide an opportunity for the participating countries to accelerate their compensation.”
The group’s next meeting is scheduled for 1 June
Crude prices have been sliding throughout the year
The decline has been driven in part by US President Donald Trump’s pro-drilling stance
The downtrend intensified after Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs in early April
OPEC+’s increased output has added to bearish sentiment in fossil fuel markets
Analysts now view crude as primarily a demand-driven market
“The outlook is more demand driven at the moment because the Saudis have effectively taken their hands off the wheel when it comes to supply,” Kyle Rodda
senior market analyst at Capital.com Australia
“Now that it's gone and OPEC+ is going to crank up production
any rebound in prices will be down to an improvement in growth conditions — which in the immediate future is all tied to US trade policy.”
Crude prices fell more than 7% last week—the largest weekly decline in a month—due to weakening demand outlooks amid the ongoing US-China trade war
Recent economic data from the world’s two largest economies have highlighted worsening conditions due to the impact of high tariffs
The US economy contracted in the first quarter
while labour market indicators pointed to a slowdown
manufacturing activity fell to its lowest level in 16 months
Oil traders are now closely watching the development of trade relations between Washington and Beijing
Trump indicated he may lower tariffs on China “at some point”
China said it was assessing the potential for trade negotiations with the US
“The US has recently sent messages to China through relevant parties
hoping to start talks with China,” the Ministry of Commerce said
American carmaker Tesla is now suffering at the hands of a global rebuke of its CEO’s politics
with sales plunging once again across Europe during the month of April
Each national dataset is telling a similar story: Consumers have had enough of Elon Musk’s politics and those of the US President Donald Trump
whom Musk spent $US290 million to usher into office
The wait and the retooling for the refreshed Model Y only tells part of the story
Tesla’s new car sales dropped off a cliff again in April
down 80.7 per cent from the same month a year ago to their lowest levels since October 2022
Sales in the Netherlands for April were down 73.8 per cent
where Tesla has been particularly dominant thanks to the country’s pro-EV policies
sales dropped over 55 per cent from the previous month
and were down 31 per cent from the same month a year earlier
And this was despite fully electric vehicles accounting for 97 per cent of all new car sales in Norway for the month of April
even as sales of fully electric cars rose 28 per cent across “much of Europe” over the first quarter
Tesla has also suffered in Australia, with sales down 75 per cent for April
Unsurprisingly, these national statistics were reflected in Tesla’s own financials, with the company reporting in the back half of April that it had suffered a 71 per cent fall in first quarter net income
compared to the same period a year earlier
Musk told investors that he intended to dedicate more time to Tesla and would only spend a day or two a week working for the Trump administration
He admitted for the first time that EV sales had been impacted by the response to his role with Trump
although he insisted it was essential for the future of the country

was meant to land on Venus in the 1970s but it never made it out of orbit because of a rocket malfunction
A Soviet-era spacecraft meant to land on Venus in the 1970s is expected to soon plunge uncontrolled back to Earth.
It’s too early to know where the half-ton mass of metal might come down or how much of it will survive re-entry, according to space debris-tracking experts.
Dutch scientist Marco Langbroek predicts the failed spacecraft will re-enter about 10 May. He estimates it will come crashing in at 150mph (242km/h), if it remains intact.
“While not without risk, we should not be too worried,” Langbroek said in an email.
The object is relatively small and, even if it doesn’t break apart, “the risk is similar to that of a random meteorite fall, several of which happen each year. You run a bigger risk of getting hit by lightning in your lifetime,” he said.
Read moreThe chance of the spacecraft actually hitting someone or something is small
The Soviet Union launched the spacecraft known as Kosmos 482 in 1972
But it never made it out of Earth orbit because of a rocket malfunction
Most of it came tumbling down within a decade
But Langbroek and others believe the landing capsule itself — a spherical object about 3ft (1 metre) in diameter — has been circling the world in a highly elliptical orbit for the past 53 years
It’s quite possible that the 1,000lb-plus (nearly 500kg) spacecraft will survive re-entry
It was built to withstand a descent through the carbon dioxide-thick atmosphere of Venus
said Langbroek of Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands
Experts doubt the parachute system would work after so many years
The heat shield may also be compromised after so long in orbit
It would be better if the heat shield fails
which would cause the spacecraft to burn up during its dive through the atmosphere
Jonathan McDowell at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said in an email
“it’ll re-enter intact and you have a half-ton metal object falling from the sky”
The spacecraft could re-enter anywhere between 51.7 degrees north and south latitude
or as far north as London and Edmonton in Alberta
almost all the way down to South America’s Cape Horn
“chances are good it will indeed end up in some ocean”
In 2022, a Chinese booster rocket made an uncontrolled return to Earth and in 2018 the Tiangong-1 space station re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere over the south Pacific after an uncontrolled re-entry.

After the dust settled on the pandemic buying frenzy
which massively inflated home prices in the city
as home prices are down 6.9 percent from their peak in June 2022
and trending down fast," Gerli said in a recent YouTube video
Newsweek contacted Phoenix Realtors for comment by email on Thursday outside standard office hours
But the city has been experiencing a price correction in recent years, as demand slowed significantly with return-to-office orders and buying properties in the city became unaffordable for many—especially locals
as pandemic investors and snowbirds sell out," Gerli wrote on X on Tuesday
A fall in prices could help aspiring buyers
home values in the Phoenix metropolitan area were down 1.3 percent in March compared to a year earlier and 0.46 percent from February
They were also down 7.4 percent from their June 2022 peak ($452,466 versus $491,960)
"Phoenix is already starting to experience a housing market correction," Gerli said in the YouTube video
this correction is going to accelerate over the next 12 months due to a massive pileup of inventory and supply on the market that is now causing sellers to freak out."
There are 18,701 homes for sale in the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro area
Reventure data shows—the highest inventory since 2017
This massive growth in supply means there is a sell-off of homes in the city
and it's actually going to get a lot more affordable for you as a buyer
A declining housing market is going to be bad for some people," Gerli said
"But it's going to be good for other people
particularly homebuyers who have been saving up over the last five years."
"You are finally going to start to get opportunities to buy a house where values are getting cheaper
and you're going to have a lot of selection," he continued
Sellers may have a hard time recognizing that their homes are not as valuable as they were a few years ago
especially if they bought them during the pandemic frenzy and are trying to recoup that cost
Many are still trying to sell their homes for a much higher price tag than buyers are willing to pay
"The reason the Phoenix market is nose-diving is because we're seeing a sell-off like we haven't seen since the 2008 crash
That was the last time in Phoenix that we saw this many sellers starting to come to market," Gerli said
"New listings are up 20 percent year over year
and buyer demand is basically still nonexistent," he continued
"It's almost as if the buyers have developed such a fatigue on the housing market in Phoenix that they're just not that excited to get back into the market."
Home sales across the Phoenix metro area in March totaled 6,400
down 20 percent from the long-term norm though slightly up from a year earlier
They were also down "by a mammoth 35 percent from the pandemic peak," Gerli wrote on X
that sold for $431,000 in September 2022 (above the listed price of $415,000) is now in foreclosure and is being auctioned off with an estimated value of $289,500
recently told ABC15: "The market is feeling softer and softer
with many properly priced homes sitting unsold and with very few showings."
the community initiatives director with the Maricopa Association of Governments in Phoenix
told KTAR that the city remained unaffordable for many: "We're seeing older adults experiencing homelessness at a far greater rate here in Maricopa County than we see elsewhere in the country
And that's a trend that's been going on for a long time."
The Phoenix housing market is set to be much more in favor of buyers in the coming months, even as mortgage rates linger around the 7 percent mark
But Gerli advised prospective buyers to be patient
"You have no pressure to buy right now," he said on YouTube
things will continue to get better for you as a buyer in Phoenix."
home prices are 18 percent overvalued in Phoenix today compared to the long-term road
"So that's a good barometer of how much prices could correct," he wrote on X
"A 20 percent correction in the Phoenix housing market is definitely within the realm of possibility if the inventory levels keep growing

It comes as some protest against Elon Musk’s political views

Tesla sales in some European markets fell sharply in April, in an acceleration of a trend seen since the beginning of the year for Elon Musk's EV brand.
It comes as Europeans buy more Chinese cars and some protest against his political views.
Tesla's new car sales in April fell by 80.7% in Sweden, national data showed on Friday, a day after Denmark recorded a 67.2% drop in Tesla sales and France reported a 59.4% fall, its fourth straight month of sales contraction.
In Sweden, this was the lowest figure since October 2022, when 43 new Teslas were registered, data from Mobility Sweden showed.
The group's European sales dropped 28.2% in March as it faces a number of challenges in the continent. Tesla is facing increased competition from traditional automaker rivals, while new Chinese entrants are launching new and often cheaper EVs.
Musk's embrace of far-right politics in Europe has also led to protests against the billionaire CEO and the company, as well as vandalism at its showrooms and charging stations across the U.S. and Europe.
Other European countries, including Italy and Norway, will release April car sales data on Friday.
On Thursday Tesla rushed to defend its chief executive, Elon Musk, assuring he had the board's confidence amid rising investor worries about his prolonged absences, polarizing politics and the EV maker's plunging sales and profit.
The board reacted after a Wall Street Journal report that it had considered replacing Musk, which board chair Robyn Denholm denied. Denholm herself has taken heat for her high compensation and perceived failures to hold Musk accountable to shareholders.
The latest Musk drama underscores the unique dilemma Tesla's board faces in managing him as he oversees five other companies and, more recently, has focused primarily on advising Republican U.S. President Donald Trump - alienating Tesla's politically liberal customer base.
Denholm seemed to address the Musk faithful as she denied the Journal report, saying the board was "highly confident" he could execute "the exciting growth plan ahead."
Company insiders have suggested to Musk for years that he replace himself in a different way - by hiring a top executive as a day-to-day manager while Musk continues as more of a figurehead, two people familiar with the discussions told Reuters.
Other Musk companies operate that way, most notably rocket-maker SpaceX, where Gwynne Shotwell serves as president and COO.
Musk has consistently refused to do the same at Tesla, the two people said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street weakened Monday as investors worldwide get more skeptical about U.S
investments because of President Donald Trump’s trade war and his criticism of the Federal Reserve
The S&P 500 sank 2.4 percent in another wipeout
That yanked the index that’s at the center of many 401(k) accounts 16 percent below its record set two months ago
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 971 points
while losses for Tesla and Nvidia helped drag the Nasdaq composite down 2.6 percent
dollar also sank as prices retreated across U.S
It’s an unusual move because Treasurys and the dollar have historically strengthened during episodes of nervousness
it’s policies directly from Washington that are causing the fear and potentially weakening their reputations as some of the world’s safest investments

Trump continued his tough talk on global trade as economists and investors continue to say his stiff proposed tariffs could cause a recession if they’re not rolled back
talks last week with Japan failed to reach a quick deal that could lower tariffs and protect the economy
and they’re seen as a “test case,” according to Thierry Wizman
“The golden rule of negotiating and success: He who has the gold makes the rules,” Trump said in all capitalized letters on his Truth Social Network
He also said that “the businessmen who criticize tariffs are bad at business
but really bad at politics,” likewise in all caps
which has also been keeping up its rhetoric

WATCH: Trump criticizes Powell over interest rates, suggests he can remove Fed chair
China will never accept it and will resolutely take countermeasures in a reciprocal manner,” China’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement
Also hanging over the market are worries about Trump’s anger at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell
Trump last week criticized Powell again for not cutting interest rates sooner to give the economy more juice
The Fed has been resistant to lowering rates too quickly because it does not want to allow inflation to reaccelerate after slowing nearly all the way down to its 2 percent goal from more than 9 percent three years ago
Trump talked Monday about a slowdown for the U.S
A move by Trump to fire Powell would likely send a bolt of fear through financial markets
the bigger worry would be that a less independent Fed would be less effective at keeping inflation under control
the United States’ reputation as the world’s safest place to keep cash
All the uncertainty striking pillars at the center of financial markets means some investors say they’re having to rethink the fundamentals of how to invest
“We can no longer extrapolate from past trends or rely on long-term assumptions to anchor portfolios,” strategists at BlackRock Investment Institute said in a report
“The distinction between tactical and strategic asset allocation is blurred
we need to constantly reassess the long-term trajectory and be dynamic with asset allocation as we learn more about the future state of the global system.”
That in turn could push investors outside the United States to keep more of their money in their home markets
according to the strategists led by Jean Boivin

Nvidia fell 4.5 percent for a third straight drop after disclosing that U.S
export limits on chips to China could hurt its first-quarter results by $5.5 billion
and 92 percent of the stocks within the S&P 500 fell
Among the few gainers were Discover Financial Services and Capital One Financial
the S&P 500 fell 124.50 points to 5,158.20
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 971.82 to 38,170.41
and the Nasdaq composite tumbled 415.55 to 15,870.90

shorter-term Treasury yields fell as investors expect the Fed to cut its main overnight interest rate later this year to support the economy
But longer-term yields rose with doubts about the United States’ standing in the global economy
The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed to 4.40 percent
up from 4.34 percent at the end of last week and from just about 4 percent earlier this month
That’s a substantial move for the bond market

CEO Elon Musk says he'll spend less time working for the federal government — but that he has no plans to stop his work with DOGE entirely
we all go down with it," he said on a call with investors and analysts Tuesday night
defending the amount of time he has spent focusing on slashing the size of the federal government
dismissed protests against Tesla as being "paid for," and said that demand for the company's vehicles remains strong despite a sharp decline in sales
showed that the company's net income plunged by 71% year-over-year and that revenue from selling cars dropped by 20%
Analysts had been expecting bad news: They already knew Tesla's deliveries in the first quarter of 2025 were down 13% from a year ago
That was the company's biggest-ever quarterly decline in sales
electric vehicle sales in general rose 7% over the same timeframe
he attributed blowback against his DOGE work to "those who were receiving the wasteful and fraudulent dollars," saying that protests against Tesla are "paid for."
wrote in an emailed statement that protesters are not paid
"Volunteer hosts and participants are stepping forward because they believe in democracy and the rule of law
not because a billionaire is paying them," the group wrote in the statement sent after the call
"The irony is rich coming from a man who spent $277 million to get Donald Trump elected."
Used Tesla prices have fallen by 10.1% in the last 12 months, according to data from iSeeCars.com
That's welcome news for anybody who wants to buy a used Tesla
But that falling value is a blow to current Tesla owners and a red flag for new car shoppers
owns a large number of its own vehicles — any Tesla that is leased is technically owned by Tesla — it hurts the company directly
On the earnings call, Tesla executives nodded to the falling value of used cars as contributing to reduced profits. There are other headwinds: While Tesla is less affected by tariffs than some rivals
executives said that they would hurt Tesla
to persuade President Trump to support lower tariffs
Musk said that Tesla is "not on the ragged edge of death," and maintained that the company's long-term profitability relies on robotaxis and autonomous robots — not the more conventional business of selling cars
a stock analyst who has long been a vocal believer in Tesla and Elon Musk
said before this call that it would be a "code red situation" if Musk doesn't signal an imminent departure from DOGE
Ives still believes Tesla could have a bright future – if Musk returns his attention to the company
"We view this as a fork in the road time," Ives wrote in a widely read note this week — echoing the infamous "fork in the road" emails that Musk's employees received when he cut jobs at Twitter, and which federal employees received this spring
Musk did say he would be cutting the time spent on DOGE work — because the bulk of the work was "mostly done," he said
But he made it clear he wasn't leaving DOGE entirely
"I'll continue to spend a day or two per week on government matters for as long as the president would like me to do so and as long as it is useful," Musk said. He did not comment on his status as a "special government employee" that is expected to expire around the end of May
given the 130-day cap per year on work people can do for the government under that job category
who told NPR via email after the call that his team views this as "the beginning of the end of his time in the Trump White House," like he had hoped to hear
Other investors seem to feel similarly; Tesla share prices rose in after-hours trading
Tesla has had an enormous influence on the growth of electric vehicles in the United States and around the globe
And it has undeniably dominated the EV market in the U.S
But as EV sales surge in China, Chinese manufacturers are unveiling tech breakthroughs, product features and sales numbers that are the envy of other automakers. Chinese EV giant BYD is now neck-and-neck with Tesla for global leadership of EV sales
the company still sells far more EVs than any other carmaker
But Tesla's share of the EV market has fallen below 50% and shows every sign of continuing to slide
Overall, according to Cox Automotive, new EV sales grew by 7% last year, while Tesla's sales shrank. That's because companies like GM, Toyota and Honda sold a growing number of EVs
enough to make up for shrinking Tesla sales — and then some
A more affordable EV or new models in the aging line-up might help Tesla win back market share
but the earnings call was scanty on details on those fronts
Musk continues to be confident in Tesla's ability to be the most valuable company in human history
He also dismissed the threat of being out-competed by Chinese companies on artificial intelligence
the technology he's staked Tesla's future on
He said he was confident that Tesla would have the best AI tech in the world
"I'm a little concerned that on the leaderboard
ranked two through 10 will be Chinese companies," he said
"But I'm not worried that rank one will be Tesla."

FTR says North American Class 8 net orders dropped 54% both month/month and year/year
as buyers expect tariffs to increase truck costs
AI PoweredOrders for new trucks fell sharply in April
plunging 54% both month-over-month (m/m) and year-over-year (y/y) to reach the lowest order total since May 2020 when order activity cratered due to Covid shutdowns
By the numbers, North American Class 8 net orders in April dropped to just 7,400 units, far below the seven-year April average of 18,963 units, according to the Bloomington, Indiana-based transportation analysis firm.
FTR said the result came as tariffs and related concerns over the economy and the freight market have significantly dampened fleet investments in Class 8 trucks and tractors this year
Some fleets apparently are holding off on truck and tractor purchases until market conditions improve or at least stabilize
And others are increasingly canceling their existing orders in response to that growing uncertainty
net orders for 2025 through April are down 30% y/y while Class 8 retail sales are down 10% y/y through March
Cumulative net orders for the 2025 order season (September 2024 through April 2025) are down 11% y/y
tariffs and retaliatory tariffs will significantly increase costs for Class 8 trucks
“In addition to slowing economic and truck freight market growth
prolonged tariff-driven cost increases and
regulatory changes could further suppress near-term demand within the Class 8 segment
This will very likely reduce industry volumes
and negatively affect profitability and stability for OEMs and suppliers in the North American Class 8 truck market.”
Trucking industry study group the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has announced its focus areas for 2025, saying it will look at some of the industry’s “most critical issues” including: rising insurance costs, driver training, improving safety performance, and addressing cabotage violations.
ATRI listed further details about each of those areas:
ATRI is a not-for-profit research organization that studies trucking industry issues. It is a part of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Federation
with an emphasis on studying the trucking industry's essential role in a safe
Key findings from the April 2025 Fraud Report include:
The surge is accelerating: TIA Watchdog recorded over 1,600 fraud reports between September 2024 and February 2025—a staggering 65% increase from the previous period
This sharp spike underscores how rapidly these schemes are evolving and spreading across the industry

New Resource for Members: Post-Fraud Incident Checklist
TIA has also released a new Post-Fraud Incident Checklist to accompany the fraud report
This step-by-step resource helps brokers respond quickly and effectively when fraud occurs
from securing internal systems to reporting to law enforcement and contacting insurance.“Our members are on the front lines of this crisis
tactical guide they can turn to in the heat of the moment—and we believe it’s going to make a real difference.”
The report also delivers a strong message to policymakers: now is the time for coordinated action
TIA is urging the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to crack down on fraudulent carriers and remove illegitimate listings from its databases
The Association is also calling on Congress to pass theHousehold Goods Shipping Consumer Protection Act (H.R
337) and the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA) ( S.1404 and H.R
which would provide additional tools for law enforcement to investigate and prosecute this crime
but it turns out that commercial drivers are just as prone to distracted driving as the rest of us
which is a significant problem for a population that faces these risks daily
In a recent survey conducted by fleet telematics and software specialist Samsara Inc., 79% of drivers admitted they had experienced a close call or near-miss because of distracted driving in the past year
fully 93% of the 1,500 drivers surveyed said they had personally experienced distracted driving-related outcomes such as vehicle damage (37%)
and license suspension or revocation (30%) over the course of their careers
As for the source of those distractions, the most frequently cited cause was—you guessed it—cellphone use, according to the report, Behind the Wheel: Distracted Driving in Physical Operations. But leaving their phones at home is not an option
as 74% of drivers report needing to use phones or other mobile technology for job-related tasks while on the road
German parcel giant DHL Group provides delivery services in more than 220 countries and territories
but not all of those deliveries are made by its signature box trucks
The carrier says it’s sometimes called on to deliver parcels to remote
hard-to-reach locations that are inaccessible by truck
forcing it to get creative in its approach
To illustrate the lengths to which it’s willing to go to deliver the goods, the company recently released a press statement detailing some of the unconventional solutions it has deployed in locations worldwide
The states of Ohio and Indiana are collaborating to deploy partially automated trucks on Interstate-70
saying the move supports the adoption of truck automation technologies in the logistics industry across the Midwest
Ohio-based supply chain and transportation solution provider
Locating the route in the Midwest shows a change from typical automated vehicle testing grounds in Texas and Arizona
regions which provide warmer and more predictable weather
the new roll-out will help the partners to assess technology performance in adverse weather conditions
That approach will eventually help to make highways safer for all drivers
“Everything we do at ODOT is driven by safety
We’re committed to reducing deaths on our roadways and vehicle automation technologies can be part of the solution,” ODOT Director Pam Boratyn said in a release
“Many vehicles on the road today have some degree of automated driving systems including adaptive cruise control
All of these features are designed to improve safety and reduce driver stress.”
The trucks are operated by Ease Logistics and are equipped with platooning technology provided by Kratos Defense
The system links the two vehicles and allows the driver of the lead vehicle to control the speed and direction of the platoon
enabling the second truck to precisely follow the path of the leader
the follower truck will automatically steer
efficient operation and consistent vehicle coordination
Professional drivers will be in the driver’s seat of both trucks throughout the deployment and can turn off the technology system and take over if needed
The trucks are also equipped with cameras and sensors for object detection that enable the following vehicle to automatically adjust its speed
if another vehicle or object cuts in between the trucks
Because the follower truck travels at a closer distance than is typical
the trucks will have a purple light on the cab that is illuminated when they’re in platooning mode to alert law enforcement that they are digitally connected

an inflation spike due to fractured supply lines is imminent
Let’s provide context to help make sense of the headlines and determine whether the plunge of Chinese inbound container ships to US ports represents truth or easy narratives
the plunge in traffic of recently departed container ships from Chinese ports is startling
it only reverses the surge to US ports in the month prior
companies were stockpiling goods to avoid tariffs
resulting in fewer inbound container ships
The graph on the right shows the two largest California ports where China’s goods typically enter
The recent decline at these ports is no different than so many others in the last 30 years
even if there is a prolonged slump in goods from China
we must recognize that China ships goods from other countries’ ports
total inbound ship traffic is a more critical gauge than ships from Chinese ports
the inflationary pressure will not rival that of 2021/22
The prior inflation was partly due to diminished supplies
but equally important was the massive stimulus that drove demand
so half of the inflation recipe is missing
Yesterday, we noted that the market had reversed its post-tariff announcement losses
We suggested remaining risk-averse in the near term as the technical damage from the recent decline had yet to be repaired
With the recent 6-day advance in the market
particularly as markets approached the 50-DMA
many “trapped longs” are looking for an exit
One thing we are watching very closely now is oil prices
The problem with oil is that the President wants to “drill-baby-drill,” which will increase supply amid weakening economic demand
and push-back from oil producers who won’t drill low-profitability wells
was already confirming the slowdown in economic activity we saw in yesterday’s GDP report
Oil prices also confirmed the decline in inflation as shown in yesterday’s PCE report
We continue to watch crude oil for its economic inputs
oil will be oversold enough for a decent technical bounce
likely occurring this summer as we move into hurricane season
much of that outlook depends on both the supply/demand imbalance in the economy and the dollar
a recovery in the dollar will provide support for oil prices
Our larger concern remains the economic demand component
oil prices could be range-bound in the 50s for quite some time
We will continue to monitor and make portfolio adjustments accordingly
The first quarter GDP fell 0.3% compared to a wide range of estimates
this was a function of tariff front running
the significant positive contribution from private inventories is also a function of stockpiling
a precursor for tomorrow’s BLS labor report
The second graph shows that the trend has continually slowed since September
last month’s figures were revised higher by 0.1%
The year-over-year rate is now 2.3% down from 2.5%
The Fed will likely look through this month’s PCE data and focus more on the next few months which will be impacted by tariffs
Why are interest rate swap spreads negative
Why do negative swap spreads warn of a liquidity problem

TSLA has seen a significant drop in new car sales in Spain
while competitors’ electric vehicle sales have seen a sharp increase
What Happened: Data released by industry group ANFAC on Monday reveals that Tesla sold 571 units in Spain in April
marking a 36% decrease from the same period in the previous year
other brands’ electric car sales have surged 54%
The decline in Tesla’s sales is in stark contrast to the overall growth in the electric vehicle market in Spain
suggesting a significant shift in consumer preference towards other brands
This decline in sales is not an isolated incident. Tesla has been losing ground in Europe as well, with a 28% sales decline reported in April 2025
The company’s market share in the region has dropped to 2% from 2.9% around the same time in the previous year

Why It Matters: Tesla’s decline highlights broader brand issues
growing competition from Chinese automakers
and CEO Elon Musk‘s increasingly polarizing public image
Musk’s support for far-right politics in Europe has sparked protests and led to vandalism at Tesla showrooms and charging stations in both the U.S

In an attempt to expand its global presence, Tesla has started sales operations in Saudi Arabia
the declining sales in Europe and now Spain raise concerns about the company’s growth prospects in new markets
The shift in consumer preference towards other brands in the electric vehicle market is a significant development that could have far-reaching implications for Tesla’s market dominance
As the company continues to face stiff competition from other brands
it remains to be seen how it will navigate these challenges and maintain its position in the market
The shares of Tesla gained over 23% during the past month, whereas on a year-to-date basis, it plunged 24.2%.

classes and family life while pursuing his PhD
In addition to working as ASU facilities staff
Paul Iannone has also taught film for the Department of English and The Sidney Poitier New American Film School while earning his PhD from the School of Art
Editor’s note: This story is part of a series of profiles of notable spring 2025 graduates
How many Arizona State University graduates does it take to change a light bulb
and he’s graduating with a PhD in art history this May
From unclogging toilets and fixing door hinges to teaching classes, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts graduate Paul Iannone said his journey at ASU echoes elements of the film “Good Will Hunting.” Although
there are some major differences: When Iannone isn’t teaching courses like Principles of Screenwriting or Intro to Film and Media Studies
you can still find him on campus working for ASU Facilities Development and Management
from facilities staff to PhD candidate to professor
and sometimes he was all of those things all at once
His graduation ceremony this May marks the completion of his PhD in art history
And when you sprinkle in a global pandemic while you’re homeschooling a child
teaching as an adjunct and trying to get your PhD
it feels darn near impossible,” Iannone said
acting as a role model to that child you’re homeschooling and you have a class full of 140 wonderful students counting on you — the motivation is kind of baked in to the struggle.”
Paul Iannone graduates this May after having been a professor
student and facilities staff member throughout his time at ASU
Paul Iannone poses for a photo while working as an academic facilities specialist at ASU
but it would still take years of grueling dedication to get him where he is today
I loved the students I worked with and I loved making my kids proud
Question: What drew you to film and media studies initially
and how did that turn into a PhD in art history
Answer: I knew I didn’t want to work in maintenance my whole life
so when I went back to school I took inventory of what I did want to do with my life
While I didn’t have a specific answer to that question at the time
I knew broadly that I wanted to work in film
Movies have been the one constant passion in my life
so I enrolled in the Film and Media Studies program
I was able to narrow my focus and I realized I wanted to keep critically thinking about film for the rest of my life
I knew I needed to take my education as far as I could
ASU does not offer a PhD in film and media studies
it’s a very nimble and innovative university and I was able to find numerous PhD programs that were flexible enough to allow me to continue studying film
I was working for the School of Art’s maintenance team at the time and learned that they offered one such degree program through their art history department
So I was able to choose film as the art discipline to study while I earned my PhD in art history
Just don’t ask me anything about Impressionism
Art Nouveau or the Renaissance period!
Q: What’s something you learned while at ASU — in the classroom or otherwise — that surprised you or changed your perspective
A: I was constantly delighted by the caliber of students in every class
I assumed my life experience would give me an edge
but I quickly realized I was going to have to step up my game because there were so many impressive classmates
Q: Which professor taught you the most important lesson while at ASU
A: That’s a tough one. There were so many! If I had to pick one, it would be Professor Aaron Baker, who offered me my first adjunct teaching position. He helped me in many ways to prepare to teach, but most importantly, his wealth of knowledge and support helped me realize I belonged in this environment.
Q: Was there a class, professor or moment at ASU that changed the game for you?
And that’s the magic of teaching. A great teacher can provide entry points into seemingly opaque subject matter so students feel comfortable exploring them, learning from them and hopefully applying them to their lives.
Q: You mentioned falling in love with teaching — what’s your favorite part about being in front of a classroom?
A: Every class is a little different. They almost have distinct personalities. So it’s a challenge trying to find what’s going to work best for each new group of students. But once you find that thing, there is a kind of magic that happens in the classroom. When you can get a large group of students all engaged, excited and invested in the material, nothing is better.
There’s just an energy in the room during those moments that I can’t quite explain. And this is when the true discovery typically happens, when the students begin branching out, now comfortable and confident with the material. I regularly have my mind blown due to brilliant insights from students every semester.
Q: What was your favorite spot on campus, whether for studying, meeting friends or just thinking about life?
A: I know a lot of people enjoy the “Secret Garden” — as they should, it’s great! However, there’s another quiet little spot located between the School of Human Evolution and Social Change and the Cowden Building. I have fond memories of eating lunch with coworkers there and then returning after my shift to study while I waited for my evening classes to begin.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to those still in school?
A: Meet people. Get involved. Your fellow students are some of the best resources that ASU provides. Long after you leave school, you will carry those friendships and connections with you into your professional careers.

The Tennessee Titans understood the potential consequences attached to selecting Cam Ward with the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft
As soon as a coach and GM draft a quarterback
they get to continue to build around that quarterback and have job security at positions with a high turnover rate around the league
If they are wrong, they will almost certainly be fired within two years of that quarterback proving to be a bust. Those are the stakes of taking a quarterback high, especially when it was followed by the top player in the draft (Travis Hunter) to going to a division rival
though that was unforeseen to the Titans (The Jaguars traded up)
That's how much conviction the Titans had when they selected Ward at No. 1 overall. Despite the pick receiving very little media coverage, Borgonzi
and Chad Brinker believe they have their franchise QB
and they've all been around one in their previous stops
Albert Breer's latest article examines the Titans' process on identifying Ward as their choice in terrific detail
The best way to sum up the team's process in deciding whether they should draft Ward is
they gave him every chance to prove that he wasn't the guy
but he kept acing every test until they had no choice but to draft him
Breer outlines how the Titans watched his film from this season in Miami
and even all the way back to his time at Incarnate Word
They detailed how you could see Ward's talent and the upside all the way back at Incarnate Word
you could see him gradual improvement while correcting his flaws and learning his limitations
his growth and understanding of what he could and couldn't do were as impressive as his spatial awareness
They believe he'll continue getting better
it doesn't tell you the full story either
everyone knows that Ward has a magnetic personality that draws in coaches and teammates alike
with a natural ability to lead a locker room
Is he going to do the little things that you need your franchise quarterback to do
How did he treat people outside of the building
the Titans tested that during his visit with the team by evaluating how he treated people in the building without fancy titles
Breer's article sums these interactions like this: "At the end of it
what the Titans brass got back from different folks around the building was consistent
'The respect level he had for everyone in the building stood out,' [Mike] Borgonzi says."
Were they really that high on Ward's character
or was that just coach speak to push a guy they coached higher in the draft
they did their research around the University of Miami campus during the team's Pro Day
They talked to Wake Forest head coach Jake Dickert
Ward's head coach at Incarnate Word and his OC/QB coach at Washington State
the front office couldn't find anyone who would say anything that disputed the character and leadership that Ward has become infamous for
No matter how many stones they turned over
the Titans had enough data points on the prospect and the person to push all their chips to the middle of the table
After weeks and months of trying to find a reason to even consider an attractive trade offer to move down the board and gather picks that could be used to rebuild this broken roster
Regardless of what state the team's roster was in
or how long Borgonzi had been in charge of the Titans' personnel moves
Ward was the type of quarterback prospect you just can't pass up
He summed up the situation like this in Breer's article:
"It just speaks to the conviction I had on him
It’s so hard to find what you’d perceive to be a franchise quarterback and have an opportunity to get one
And I don’t know if we’ll ever be in this spot again to do it
I know there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that

The best way to sum up the team's process in deciding whether they should draft Ward is, they gave him every chance to prove that he wasn't the guy, but he kept acing every test until they had no choice but to draft him.
The process starts where it always starts, with the tape. In that article, Breer outlines how the Titans watched his film from this season in Miami, then his time at Washington State, and even all the way back to his time at Incarnate Word.
They detailed how you could see Ward's talent and the upside all the way back at Incarnate Word, and every year, you could see him gradual improvement while correcting his flaws and learning his limitations. By the time Ward finished in Miami, his growth and understanding of what he could and couldn't do were as impressive as his spatial awareness, feel in the pocket, and arm talent.
They believe he'll continue getting better, because that's all he's ever done.
Breer's article sums these interactions like this: "At the end of it, what the Titans brass got back from different folks around the building was consistent. 'The respect level he had for everyone in the building stood out,' [Mike] Borgonzi says."
What about his coaches? Were they really that high on Ward's character, or was that just coach speak to push a guy they coached higher in the draft?
The Titans checked that too. Obviously, they did their research around the University of Miami campus during the team's Pro Day, but they also went beyond that. They talked to Wake Forest head coach Jake Dickert, Ward's head coach at Washington State, and North Texas head coach Eric Morris, Ward's head coach at Incarnate Word and his OC/QB coach at Washington State.
Still, the front office couldn't find anyone who would say anything that disputed the character and leadership that Ward has become infamous for. No matter how many stones they turned over, it was just more of the same.
At that point in the process, the Titans had enough data points on the prospect and the person to push all their chips to the middle of the table. He didn’t elaborate on the timelines needed to move production or supply chains to the U.S
The global automaker reported revenues down 14 per cent to $55.2 billion in the first quarter of 2025
Stellantis joins Mercedes and General Motors in noting tariff uncertainty makes it impossible to predict with any certainty what the rest of the year will bring
Stellantis had suspended its European product imports as it continues trying to navigate through the 25 per cent tariff Trump has imposed on all imported vehicles to the U.S.

Tesla’s (TSLA) sales in Europe have continued to decline sharply in Q2 2025
After delivering 11% fewer vehicles in 2024 compared to 2023
despite ramping up production at its Berlin Gigafactory
European sales dropped by 37% year-over-year
While some investors blamed the earlier slump on the Model Y changeover
Tesla is now tracking about 50% lower in five major European markets compared to Q2 2024 and is even behind the disappointing numbers from Q1 2025
which suggests that Tesla is losing market share while competitors thrive
These trends are worrying because the excuse that the Model Y changeover was the main issue is starting to lose credibility as Tesla struggles to sell the newly available versions
new Model Ys are available for immediate delivery
While cheaper rear-wheel-drive models arriving next month may help slightly
the poor performance of the higher-priced all-wheel-drive models is troubling
Tesla is facing intense competition in Europe and appears to be losing ground fast
and negative sentiment toward CEO Elon Musk may also be contributing to its declining demand
Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on TSLA stock based on 16 Buys, 10 Holds, and 11 Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average TSLA price target of $283.69 per share implies 1.2% upside potential
