A Michigan family is grieving after the body of a promising young artist from Saginaw was pulled from the Caribbean Sea on Wednesday
a 20-year-old student at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit
He was swimming with three lifelong friends when one of them started struggling against the current and called out for help
Gonzalez immediately swam over and helped save the girl's life
but in the process he was overpowered by a wave and pulled further out to sea
It was the last time he would be seen alive
"He always put everyone else before himself," said his mother
though they are taking some solace that the agonizing three-day search far from home is over
"We're surrounded by family and friends who have just showed us so much love and support," Renee said
"The local community here in Saginaw has been amazing
and I'm at so much more at peace than I was three days ago."
lacked passports and couldn't travel to Cancun as the search unfolded
they had family there who kept them abreast of the effort and who are now in communication with the U.S
The family is completing paperwork and hopes to have Alejandro's remains back to the United States sometime next week
Alejandro was a budding artist who graduated three years ago from the Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy
He was just wrapping up his junior year at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit
Renee said her son had a wide breadth of interests in the art world
"He had mostly done painting and sketching but going to college
he was able to really branch out and he had taken a liking to fabric art," she said
noting he was studying the delicate art of lacemaking this year
In 2023, he painted a utility box at the corner of Hess and Williamson in his hometown
The feline-centric piece was part of the Great Mural Project
a city-sponsored initiative that aims to beautify the city and make art more accessible
He was musically inclined as well and had performed with the worship team at his church in Saginaw
and was learning to play a hand-me-down accordion
Just last week he bought a new instrument he wanted to learn: a harp
A GoFundMe effort has been established to support the Gonzalez family
A GoFundMe spokesperson verified the validity of the account Thursday
As of Friday night it had generated about $11,300 of a $15,000 goal
A benefit spaghetti dinner has also been planned for Friday at Miles Market in Saginaw
Alejandro's family said he was "a joy to know
and to hear his laugh is worth telling an unfunny joke
as is his friendly mood and exciting disposition."

the son of Matt and Renee (Perro) Gonzalez
He graduated from Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy (SASA) in 2022
He was currently studying at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit
His love of art started with painting in his early years and developed into a love for fiber arts and textiles in college
Alejandro often used art as a way to explore who he was and who he was becoming
He created many self portraits in various mediums over the years
He loved to create art in his day to day life
creating fabulous latte art at all the coffee shops where he worked
He showed his appreciation for other artists by encouraging local artists to display their work wherever they could
He loved to listen to music of all genres and from various eras
He’d recently started a collection of vinyl records and CDs
His love of music wasn’t confined to listening
and used the skills he learned there to play keyboard at Saginaw Wesleyan Church as part of the praise team
The only thing he loved more than art and music was his friends and family
He cared deeply about those who made an impact in his life
He maintained a strong relationship with friends from High school (some from elementary school even)
though college and life separated them geographically
Alejandro was taken from this world too early
Alejandro is survived and will be missed by many

Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 p.m
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m
where friends may visit with the family from 3:00 p.m

authorities along Mexico’s Riviera Maya are bracing for a record-breaking influx of the messy seaweed this summer
Sargassum blooms have been coming ashore earlier than normal this year, and Esteban Amaro, director of the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring System, said the forecast for 2025 is worrisome
“We are expecting more intense and more frequent arrivals along the entire coast,” he said
Amaro said satellite images indicate the accumulation of sargassum this summer will be greater than the region has seen in three years
and we will easily surpass that figure this year,” he said
The brown seaweed known as sargassum is naturally beneficial to marine ecosystems in the open ocean
coral and human health when large quantities reach the coast
sargassum gives off a foul smell similar to rotten eggs
Sargassum accumulation along the Riviera Maya typically peaks during the summer months from April or May to August, but can persist into November. Last year, Quintana Roo did not declare sargassum season over until Nov. 14
Increasing quantities of the seaweed have been washing ashore since 2011
posing a challenge to authorities as they work to keep the beaches clean and safe for tourism
In late March, officials along Mexico’s Caribbean coast reported an increase in sargassum compared to last year
The popular tourist destination of Tulum collected 50% more seaweed in January and February compared to the same period last year
according to the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat)
The state’s Ecology and Environment Ministry said that
a total of 10,236 metric tons of sargassum had been collected in the coastal areas of Playa del Carmen
Quintana Roo Gov. Mara Lezama recognized the official start of sargassum season on April 15
outlining her administration’s containment plans and saying that keeping beaches clean is a shared responsibility
saw approximately 9,500 meters of barriers installed off the state’s coasts at strategic locations to contain the algae and redirect it to collection points
Amaro said that while the barriers are a critical part of protecting Mexico’s beaches
the possibility that climatic conditions prompt a massive influx of sargassum blooms requires authorities to redouble their efforts
The Navy Ministry also implemented a monitoring phase designed to locate floating masses of sargassum that could impact beaches
assigning 11 coastal sargassum harvesting vessels and 22 smaller vessels to the task

DETROIT – The remains of a College for Creative Studies student have been recovered in Cancun
was swept away in the current after helping rescue a friend who had been caught in a wave off the Caribbean Sea
His body was recovered Wednesday following a three-day search
a student at Detroit’s prestigious College for Creative Studies
was remembered by colleagues and friends as a passionate artist who actively worked to promote other artists in the community
“He was always trying to recruit artists to show their work,” said Mia Gutch
who worked with Gonzalez at Germack in Detroit’s Eastern Market
where he served as a barista while pursuing his studies
Gonzalez was with friends near the Caribbean Sea on Sunday when one member of the group became caught in a wave
While successfully helping to rescue his friend
“He always put everybody else’s happiness and feelings before his,” said Mila Djordjeciv
The Saginaw Township native’s family received confirmation Wednesday that search teams had recovered his body
“I just want it to be known that he moved down here
And it’s been beautiful,” said Darcy Moran
The College for Creative Studies is offering support services for students and staff affected by the loss
The campus community has described a somber mood as news of Gonzalez’s death spreads

all-inclusive resorts dangled the promise of easy
That’s probably why I haven’t been to one in over a decade
a brand new all-inclusive hotel in Cancun focused on providing a luxury experience
I like those.) Twenty-seven restaurants and bars led by award-winning chefs and mixologists
and asked if he wanted to make it a Guys (of a Certain Age) Trip
He was online booking flights before the call was over
relaxing weekend hanging with an old friend
and sampling curated cuisine from across the globe was just what I needed
Ava promised an opulent and exclusive escape
it also came with an unexpected twist: a steady stream of celebrities and influencers buzzing about the place
threatening to derail my leisurely Zen getaway
The first thing I notice about the Ava is how close it is to the airport
Cancun’s Hotel Zone is usually a 30-minute drive from the airport
and the resorts in Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya are an hour
I was rolling up to the door before most people had retrieved their luggage from baggage claim
The grand lobby welcomes me with a blast of cool air
and the possibility of a White Lotus-style adventure
I drop my bag off in the tastefully decorated room (while quickly soaking in the killer ocean views from the balcony)
and make my way down to The Cocktail Bar where Kevin is waiting
A well-made margarita is in my hand faster than I can say, “Hey, is that JaRule?” Why would I say that, you ask? Well, because it was, in fact, JaRule walking past the bar inviting us all to a whiskey tasting he was hosting the next day. (His new whiskey brand
JaRule—I’m trying to catch up with my friend here
The bartender tells us that it’s going to be a celebrity-studded weekend at the resort
culminating with a big Dia de Los Muertos-themed party where Joe Jonas will guest DJ
even though I am admittedly not a Joe Jonas aficionado
and that the younger women at the bar seem excited
this weekend is not about gawking at celebs—it’s about me
The dining options at the Ava are impressive
Copal is led by Chef Lula Martín del Campo
and I try her signature dish: the beef filet with ash and cotija cheese sauce
which is both earthy and out of this world
its savory aroma mingling nicely with the salt from my margarita
Chef Lula’s goal at Copal is to honor the rich flavors and distinctive smoke that have always been part of Mexican cuisine
Copal tacos are available all day at the taco stand outside—because nothing says luxury like a fistful of tacos on the go
we head to a lively outdoor bar overlooking the ocean
who sit at the end of the bar quietly enjoying a couple of Pacificos
Swirling around us is a scene right out of a nature documentary about influencers in the wild
A girl at the bar orders a martini just for the photo op
Everyone looks to be at the party of a lifetime
all the smiling faces suddenly reset back to neutral
I’ve never felt more like an AARP member—and honestly
Being the out of place middle-aged guy at the end of the bar feels like a win here
Mornings at all-inclusives are generally the domain of screaming kids doing cannonballs at the pool and zombified adults recovering from the previous night’s excesses
My mornings at this particular all-inclusive
Aroma—a quiet oasis where the cappuccinos are rich
and the only sound is the occasional clink of a spoon against porcelain
It’s the type of moment I never would have experienced in my 20s because
all I was looking for was tequila and rowdy behavior
I notice a lot of things now that I wouldn’t have back then
like the fact that there’s actually a lot to do when you’re not sleeping the day away
You can take advantage of the state-of-the-art fitness center and spa
kayak or paddleboard in the 2.8-acre saltwater Ava Bay
or even roll a few games at the on-site bowling alley
My mission is to sit poolside with my friend and become one with the chill Mexican vibes
So we find the adults-only pool on the far side of the resort
I’m finally feeling the serenity I’ve been seeking
what says vacation more than stretching out under the warm sun
the scent of coconut sunscreen and chlorine in the air
“How y’all doing today?” over the sound system
followed by a distinctive thump-thump-thump
Our relaxing afternoon is about to turn into a bacchanal of manufactured “fun” and head pounding EDM beats
while I busy myself figuring out if I can order nachos from my seat
that’s right—Nick Cannon is DJing our pool party today
I don’t watch The Masked Singer or America’s Got Jugglers
but I was pleasantly surprised when most of his set consisted of ’80s and ’90s bangers
I’m transported back to the days of mixtapes
But a little toe tappin’ and memory lane walkin’ never ruined a party And thankfully
One of the charms of travel is the opportunity to interact with people from all around the world
And what better environment to do so than around the table in a teppanyaki restaurant like Ava’s Kita
As the chef delights us with sleight-of-hand grill work and time-honored onion volcanos
we get to chatting with the lovely Mexican couple sitting next to us
and the challenges of parenthood and modern life south of the border
Then heads start turning as a well-dressed blond and her crew enter, drawing the attention of our tablemates. They tell me it’s Julianne Hough from Dancing with the Stars. Suddenly, the conversation shifts from our lives to hers, and how she is at the resort this weekend promoting her dance and fitness platform, KINRGY
“You should take one of her early morning classes while you’re here,” the wife says
intimate dinner we were enjoying slipped away
we head over to the Dia de Los Muertos-themed shindig
which is done up like a Hollywood premiere: bright lights
and scores of people jostling for position so they can catch a glimpse of someone famous
make my way to the nearby tequila cart so I can catch a glimpse of some local reposado
Kevin and I trade various versions of “Who is that?” and “Don’t know” as we sip and watch the flashbulb parade go by
like being dropped into a foreign land where you don’t speak the language and trying to figure out what everyone is going on about
“Isn’t that the girl from The Hangover movies?” I ask
but I beam with pride at having finally recognized someone
When we finally make it inside the Dia de Los Muertos party
Gone is the aging curmudgeon focused on Gen Z foolishness
I’m now fresh-faced and smiling at the epic transformation this ballroom has undergone—from boring builder’s beige to thumping nightclub on par with Vegas or Mexico City
Dancers wearing skeleton make-up and elaborate hats (a staple of Day of the Dead celebrations known as Catrinas) weave through the crowd under a massive LED lightshow chandelier
Giant skeleton puppets in festive garb boogie on the dancefloor as Joe Jonas mans the baseline from the stage
old school 80s and 90s hits dominate the set
making me feel like Joe is ignoring all these 20-somethings and playing just for me
Not even the sad state of the dance floor can sour my mood
everyone just stood there filming it on their phones
But whatever—I’m not going to let these wayward kids ruin my final night fiesta
After the music fades and some post-party tacos are had
I find myself back on the balcony of my room
winding down to the gentle rhythm of the ocean
This place actually delivered everything it promised—luxury
I could have done without all the celebrity hubbub
but ultimately I got what I came here for: a chance to slow down
and embrace the rare joy of doing absolutely nothing
all-inclusives were about chasing the kind of fun that left you needing a vacation from your vacation
It wasn’t about going hard; it was about letting go
Maybe all-inclusives have grown up—or maybe I have

Just last week WTTC offered to work closely with the new incoming US administration to recover international travel through a five-point list of top priorities
the adoption of a comprehensive and cost-effective global standard testing regime at airports
the re-opening of essential ‘air corridors’ to resume key international business travel routes and re-establishing relations with countries around the world to ensure each is ‘open for business’

making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating one in four of all new jobs

Visiting Cancún doesn't have to blow your budget – here are our best money saving tips
With its luxurious all-inclusives, flashy nightclubs and pricey waterfront restaurants, Cancún can feel like a playground for wealthy visitors
has plenty of good-value accommodations and savory Yucatecan eats that won't empty your wallet
And then there's the hotel zone's star attraction – a swath of mesmerizing beaches lapped by the Caribbean Sea that don't cost a single peso
Here are some insider tips on how to stretch your budget in Cancún and what you can expect to spend per day
Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): M$1000-2500
Cancún's costly peak travel season runs from December to April
It comes with an even steeper price tag around Christmas
During spring break – usually around March – hordes of college students descend on the megaresorts for wild fiestas in the beach clubs
giving the city an overcrowded and boozy anything-goes vibe
not to mention authentic eats that would have made Anthony Bourdain smile
hit the downtown market stalls and moderately priced restaurants specializing in homestyle Yucatecan fare
For regional classics such as panuchos (fried tortilla snacks)
sopa de lima (Mexican lime soup) and cochinita pibil (slow-cooked pulled pork)
you'll find dozens of informal cafes lining the aisles of Mercado 23 and Mercado 28
some downtown establishments feature a menú del día
a ridiculously cheap three-course lunch that may or may not induce a food coma
Come nighttime, wrap your fingers around the al pastor (spit-cooked marinated pork) tacos at Taquería Coapeñitos, or get some munchies at hotel zone hole-in-the-wall Surfin' Burrito
Upon arrival at the Cancún International Airport, look for the red ADO buses that run frequently from the terminals to the downtown bus station
They cost about a third of what the airport taxis charge
but they don’t go to the hotel zone – you'll have to take an airport shuttle if you're staying on that side of town
Many budget-conscious travelers like to stay in the hostels
guesthouses and hotels clustered around downtown's Parque de las Palapas
Tried-and-true faves include Nomads, a convivial hostel sporting a rooftop bar and pool, or Hotel Náder
which has great low-season rates for its impeccably spacious rooms
Lodging, food and transportation tend to cost less in the downtown area. Nevertheless, it's possible to find several reasonably priced digs in the hotel zone: Mayan Monkey and Hostel Natura put you within stumbling distance of the party zone
but book ahead as rooms and dorm beds go fast
In Cancún's outlying areas, you’ll find dozens of sublime jungle-set cenotes (sinkholes
caverns and underground rivers) that are ideal for swimming
depending on the activity and equipment needed
The bulk of them are fairly budget-friendly
considering that you can easily spend a half-day frolicking in otherworldly natural wonders
Most hotels and restaurants will gladly accept US.
but with the caveat that you probably won't get a great exchange rate
Even cab drivers typically charge more when quoting fares in US dollars – whenever possible
take into account that you may get hit with foreign transaction fees for ATM withdrawals and debit card purchases
Some major credit cards have no transaction fees
making them the smartest payment option if you want to save money
Cancún's city buses cost a fraction of what you would pay for taxis
plus you eliminate the hassle of having to negotiate overpriced cab fares
R-2 and R-27 run about every 10 minutes between downtown and the hotel zone
allowing you to zip back and forth with ease between the beaches and Cancún Centro
R-1 stops at the ADO first-class bus station along downtown's main drag
and then it follows a route through the L-shaped hotel zone
a barrier island spanning about 24km (15 miles)
Locals often get around Cancún and its surrounding areas in low-cost shared vans
and it makes perfect sense once you see how convenient and relatively affordable they are
To reach downtown's Isla Mujeres ferry terminal
hail a "Puerto Juárez" colectivo from a stop across from the ADO bus station
The vans depart from a parking lot in the ADO station
but we're guessing that beach time sits high on your Cancún to-do list
If you're traveling with children, hit the hotel zone's north-facing beaches, such as Playa Las Perlas and Playa Langosta
swimmer-friendly waters feel more like a lake
Alternatively, the beaches hugging the east shore, such as Playa Marlín and eco-friendly Playa Delfínes
but the Caribbean Sea along the coastline is downright breathtaking
For a cool stroll, walk about 1km (0.6 miles) north of Playa Marlín to the weathered remains of Yamil Lu'um, a small Maya structure known as the Scorpion's Temple. Used as a place of worship by maritime settlers from 1200 to 1550 CE, the ancient ruins stand in stark contrast to the backdrop of sleek hotels.
Many hotels, apartments and guesthouses in Cancún come with full kitchens, allowing you to reduce travel expenses by self-catering. In some hotels, children can stay for free, while various attractions, long-distance buses and ferries provide discounted prices for kids.
Family-run hotels often cut guests a deal for multiple-night stays or payments in cash. In the off-season, some of the large resorts run promos offering essentially high-end rooms at midrange rates.
is set to have a new bridge over the Nichupté Lagoon that will connect the resort city to the hotel zone
The Nichupté Vehicular Bridge, an infrastructure project being developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT)
is expected to benefit 1.3 million residents in Cancún by reducing travel times — up to 45 minutes for daily commuters — once completed
— Mara Lezama (@MaraLezama) April 27, 2025
During a site tour on Saturday with President Claudia Sheinbaum and Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama
head of SICT Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina said the bridge will be one of the longest bridges over a lagoon in Latin America
With a total length of 11.2 kilometers, the bridge will connect Cancún’s hotel zone with Colosio Boulevard
It will feature an 8.8-kilometer-long bridge
each measuring 2.4 kilometers located on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard and Kukulcán Boulevard

OKC Will Rogers International Airport will soon add its first international flight in a "generation" with a nonstop flight to Mexico
The flight will fly direct to the Caribbean Sea border city weekly from Nov
Mayor David Holt said that adding the first international flight out of Oklahoma City is a historic moment for the city
“This milestone is a testament to our city’s renaissance
as well as a reflection of our willingness to invest in ourselves
This would not have been possible without the vision of our airport leadership to construct the necessary facilities and their persistence in marketing this opportunity to the carriers
as well as American Airlines," Holt said in a news release
and we appreciate their support of OKC and our community
We are nearing completion of our customs facility
which will allow this new international service to become a reality
This type of new international nonstop service elevates OKC to a new level and offers our travelers another quality-of-life improvement," Airports Director Jeff Mulder said in a news release
are threatened by the arrival of a massive amount of sargassum leading up to Easter
The local city council said it will present a contingency plan for Holy Week — which begins Sunday — in collaboration with the state Government and the Naval Ministry (Semar) to address the problem
“We’ll present the contingency plan in case of a significant arrival [of seaweed],” Municipal Public Services Director José Antonio de la Torre Chambé said
“We’ve already established schedules for sargassum response
Sargassum is a brown seaweed that floats on the open ocean
it can be harmful when large quantities reach the shores
as it decomposes and produces hydrogen sulfide
a gas that smells like rotten eggs and may cause respiratory issues
In the Riviera Maya, sargassum season usually lasts from May to November, although it varies each year. In 2024, the season officially ended on Nov. 14.
De la Torre said that sargassum collection has increased in recent weeks due to strong winds from the south, which have carried the algae to shores. In the last few days alone, he said 80 cubic meters of sargassum have been removed, mainly from Playa Delfines, one of Mexico’s most visited beaches.
Playa del Carmen has also been affected by sargassum
The buildup has impacted at least 60 maritime service providers at El Recodo Beach in Playa del Carmen
further complicating port closures for smaller vessels due to wind gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour
The Regional Harbor Master’s Office has suspended nautical and recreational activities in Puerto Juárez
These climatic conditions have led to cancellations in the tourism industry
with estimated economic losses of US $300,000 per day
affecting everything from ticket sales for tours and other services to clients’ and employees’ ability to access businesses located in locations like Isla Mujeres
Municipal workers of Playa del Carmen have removed sargassum, using heavy machinery and other tools to keep the beaches clean before the Easter holidays. Data from the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) shows that Cancún is anticipated to experience one of the highest occupancy rates during the holiday season
good beach weather is expected for Holy Week
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) forecasts partly cloudy skies and scattered showers in Quintana Roo
with warm to very hot temperatures during the afternoon

as it offers a wide range of complimentary fitness classes
ranging from yoga and pilates to weight training
as well as the unique Rafa Nadal Tennis Center
which features eight tennis courts as well as coaching using Nadal’s very own techniques
the Zentropia Spa & Wellness Center is one of the largest in Cancun
a dry sauna and sensation showers that make splurging for a day pass worth it
The Forbes Vetted travel team has researched, written and published dozens of hotel guides featuring cities across the globe
My name is Astrid Taran and I’m the senior travel editor at Forbes Vetted
I have covered travel for almost a full decade as both a writer and editor
Along with extensively writing about hotels and airlines
I have also written multiple destination guides as well as long-form features on luxury travel
I have visited Cancun numerous times thanks to its great beaches and convenient location just a short flight from my home base of New York City
and I have stayed at several properties on this list
We selected the top contenders based on personal stays as well as extensive research
there’s no shortage of all-inclusive resorts to choose from
The following properties have recently opened in 2024 and early 2025; while we haven’t tried all of them out ourselves yet
they are worth considering if you’re looking for additional resort options
Many all-inclusive resorts in Cancun offer similar base amenities including unlimited food and drink
each property provides a unique experience
Here’s what to consider as you’re perusing your options
A majority of resorts are located in the Hotel Zone
which stretches nearly 14 miles along the Caribbean coastline
While the Hotel Zone offers unmatched convenience
it’s also the most popular spot for tourists
Playa Mujeres is a short drive in the northern part of Cancun
The number of people you’re traveling with should also factor into your decision
If you’re going on a romantic getaway with a significant other
adults-only resort will likely fit the bill
consider a larger resort with plenty of dining options and areas catered to both adults and children
Some travelers prioritize relaxation while on vacation
choosing to spend a majority of their time lounging at the beach or pool
Others look forward to exhilarating water sports
Spend some time researching the activity options each resort offers to find a spot that caters to your party’s interests and activity level
you’re able to see exactly how much you’ll be spending up front
some resorts offer add-on experiences—everything from spa treatments to off-site excursions—for an additional cost
Make sure to review everything that’s included in the all-inclusive rate so you can budget for add-ons if you wish
While Cancun is mostly a year-round destination
the best month to visit Cancun is the shoulder season: mid-October and November
The rainy season will have just ended and the humidity has lessened
Average daily temperatures are 84 degrees Fahrenheit
The crowds have not started arriving for the holiday season
but will certainly be more crowded (especially during traditional spring break.)
an all-inclusive resort can definitely be worth it
mainly because it helps remove the stress from planning a vacation
You know exactly how much you’re paying upfront
beach access and entertainment built into the all-inclusive price
which means you can spend less time tallying up each individual expense and more time unplugging and relaxing
if you’re the type of traveler who likes to branch out and explore while on vacation
it may not be worth it to pay for an all-inclusive resort
Each Cancun resort differs slightly in what it offers in its all-inclusive price
you can expect that price to cover the rate of your room
Some resorts go above and beyond by offering additional activities at no extra cost
spa treatments and offsite excursions can be added onto your package for an additional fee
but if you want to leave something extra for outstanding service
but it’s a hassle for employees to exchange it for the local currency

2025ShareThis Cancún Resort Helped Get Me Out of My Comfort Zone and Face My Fear of FailureThis 5-star resort in Cancún is great for all-inclusive travel

Photo: W+G Creative/AVA Resort CancunPublished Jan 17
If I’m not immediately good at something new
I’ve started and quit so many activities—ballet
horseback riding—and told myself it was because I’m a person who simply gets bored too easily
I suspect this attitude has something to do with “being a pleasure to have in class” all throughout school; I got good grades
Failure just wasn’t something I was accustomed to
Rest assured, I’ve been working on adjusting this rigid way of thinking (shout out to my therapist), and when I was invited to stay at Ava Resort Cancún in Mexico for their grand opening
I knew I’d be angry with myself if I didn’t take advantage of some new-to-me activities they had to offer
sitting by the pool all day is lovely—and impossible to fail at—but I wanted to put my therapy skills to the test
My goal: Try things I’ve never done before
and truly be okay with not being perfect on the first go
Ava Resort Cancún is an all-inclusive, five-star resort that recently opened in October 2024. It’s located in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico, right on the Caribbean Sea and only a 10-minute drive from Cancún International Airport
An Ava shuttle was waiting for me at the airport when I landed
but any guest can arrange transportation services through the resort
with prices starting at $600 USD at the time of publishing:
I was in an oceanfront king room for four nights
it was honestly exactly what I would expect for $600 a night—better than any Hilton or Marriott I’ve stayed in
The private terrace overlooking the Caribbean Sea really sealed the deal for me
Even if you were to spend the whole day lounging in bed (which I certainly did not)
thanks to the massive sliding glass door to the terrace where you can still see the beach
(LOL at me being anxious about trying something meant to be soothing.)
And even though Smith kept repeating that it didn’t matter how silly we looked or felt
I couldn’t help but feel like I’d be judged for the next hour
EDM music began blasting—I could feel the bass pulsing in my body
deep belly breaths that we had to follow along with
But then I remembered I was outside on a terrace facing the ocean—and while I couldn’t see it at that moment
smelling the salty water and feeling the cool breeze snapped me out of panic
It was a much more calming atmosphere than
I really did let go of any intrusive thoughts and forgot about how awkward I felt
We spent the last few minutes of class in corpse pose (Savasana) letting our breathing get back to normal
I had a spa session the day before and didn’t even feel as relaxed afterward as I did after the breathwork class.) After we took our eye masks off
most of it was from how bright it was without the masks
but there was a small part of me that felt so moved and changed
and it was on the same terrace overlooking the ocean where the breathwork class had been held
as it was 80 degrees and humid (though the provided cold towels and cucumber water helped a tiny bit)
I was intimidated as hell to take this class
The thought of dancing in the same space as a professional genuinely made me want to back out at the last second
but it was too cool of an opportunity to pass up
taking a spot toward the middle of the pack
Hough began the class by demonstrating a few key moves that would be repeated throughout and had us follow along
I wasn’t picking them up as fast as I wanted to
which I knew would be an issue when we did the moves for real
most people looked like they were naturals
they’re probably looking at me like I don’t belong
When the music turned on and we officially got started
It felt as though my limbs and brain weren’t connected as I went from one move to the next
But surprisingly (or maybe unsurprisingly)
the same thing happened here as it did in the breathwork class: Somewhere between a grapevine step and a hip thrust
I stopped caring how I was being perceived
Photo: Danielle ZicklExploring the resort’s activitiesEven though I traveled by myself, I genuinely think that Ava Resort Cancún would be great for families and solo travelers alike. There are six pools—one that’s adults-only—with three swim-up bars, private cabanas, deck chairs, sunbeds, and lounge chairs. There’s also the Ava Bay, a 2.8-acre manmade body of water on property where you can do water activities like sailing, paddle boarding, and kayaking.
If you want to break up your poolside lounging, there’s a free gym and a few activities you’ll have to pay extra for:
This leads me to the fact that because of the resort’s location, the beach isn’t as good of quality as the others in the hotel zone. My shuttle driver from the airport said to avoid going in the ocean because it’s more “swampy” than the other beaches in Cancún. (Hence the manmade bay I mentioned earlier.) So you can walk along the beach, but that’s pretty much it.
I also found there wasn’t much to do in the resort itself, unless you have excursions booked or want to pay extra for the spa, golf, bowling, laser tag, or arcade games. But in terms of entertainment, shows, or live music, you’d need to leave the resort to find it. So although there’s definitely stuff to keep you occupied, I would say that Ava is very much a resort for people who need a break from life and want to mostly just lounge around.
While I’m not inherently an all-inclusive resort girlie—I’d rather sightsee on my own in a less extravagant way and not be confined to one space—I still had a great time and recommend it to anyone looking for a luxurious getaway who wants to relax by the pool with a taco and margarita in hand.

Cancún has become a tourist playground that both celebrates and obscures the history of the Yucatán and its peoples
The dawn of the 1970s was a turbulent time for the United States
Student unrest at university campuses against the conflict was escalating while
If you wanted to escape the industrial action
then Mexico was a definite possibility—though if you had even heard of Cancún at that time (a highly unlikely prospect) then you would have probably known you needed to bring a tent with you for your winter vacation
the population of this corner of the Yucatán Peninsula had
all caretakers of the coconut plantations that were one of the regions few sources of employment
What happened next was one of the most momentous controlled explosions of tourism that the Americas had even seen
Momsen describe it in a 2005 edition of the Annals of the Association of American Geographers
something of a cautionary tale about tourism’s sometimes invidious
“Cancun has become a simulacrum,” they write
an artificial reproduction and representation of the Yucatan physical environment and Maya heritage manifest in a constructed physical and cultural landscape—and the result is Gringolandia
a dynamic “hybrid-space” in which elements of Mexican
and artificial Maya culture have been re-constituted for tourist consumption
and initially paid for by the Mexican government
work on this “hybrid-space” began in earnest on the construction of nine hotels in Cancún in 1970; the first opened in 1974
before the Spanish conquest in the early sixteenth century
was that of a stronghold of the Mayan people
Blanet Castellanos describes as a “settler colonial” narrative that extended into the late twentieth century
“The Mexican government considered Cancún an attractive site to create a tourist pole because of its proximity to vast beaches, Maya archaeological ruins, and cheap Indigenous labor,” Castellanos writes in her chapter in The Transnational Construction of Mayanness: Reading Modern Mesoamerica through US Archives
relied on the settler colonial narratives of terra nullius and imagined constructing a city populated by settlers
these settlers included mestizo settlers from Cancún’s middle class
the guidebooks propagate a transnational Mayanness that is rooted in US settler colonial discourses of discovery
What we are presented with is a simple version of Maya culture and history
one that is infinitely consumable and nonthreateningly exotic
the allure of the powdered limestone beaches
and cerulean sea was becoming a major draw for Americans
This came with consequences unforeseen by the government
as architect Mario Schjetnan explains in a 1977 issue of Landscape Architecture
“The town grew from zero to 40,000 inhabitants in four years and is still attracting people at a fast rate,” he writes
land uses and construction controls as devised by the planners—actually very rigidly—could not be preserved
start to build a house and convert the garage into a store
would become established definitely and at once their wives and family would start an improvised store
Felix Sanchez pontificates on the cohesion of Cancún’s urban design thread
“Thus far no urban design system is ordering the development,” he argues
making a more expressive and visually coherent urban form
In this way both the natural world and artificial world at [Cancún] will make it the place to be
urban design ambiguous and architecture rigid and pretentious
Whether this perceived “wrong” has been righted in the intervening half century is debatable
Equally debatable is the capacity of the culture and infrastructure of Cancún to both adequately house the Mayan community and tourists and whether the fear of losing tourism dollars is creating a resort space where political expression is
Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_2" ).setAttribute( "value"
Heather Hawn and Jennifer Tison explore this tension in a 2010 issue of Latin American Perspectives
“Outside the central tourist district in Cancún there were displays of party affiliation and political posters, but once inside the central tourist all these elements disappeared,” they note during site visits made in 2009 and 2010
The absence of political displays was “especially noteworthy” to them since Mexico was just
a few months away from hotly contested elections
Interviews revealed that protests were rare in Cancún and [I]ndigenous groups and other political organizations tried to avoid overt institutional or extrainstitutional behavior in the tourist district because “Mr
Cancún” delivered an invaluable stream of revenue
Interviewees also reported that neighbors and community members were quick to discourage disruptive extrainstitutional behaviors as potentially damaging to Cancún’s reputation and upsetting to tourists
It wasn’t (and isn’t) just Cancún that has been transformed since those pioneer days of the early 1970s
The migration of labor from Mayan villages in the Yucatán region
and the flow of money earned in Cancún back to rural areas of the state
mean that the concentric ripples caused by this creation of this vacation hub have continued to expand with each generation
“The birth of the tourist industry in [Cancún] and the consequent out-migration of Maya peasants reinforce the liminality that this southern border area has had in the creation of Mexico as a nation state,” writes Alicia Re Cruz concludes in her 1996 analysis of tourism in the city
has been transformed into a multiethnic composition where the local Maya
and the international tourists together transform and recreate new identities
This contemporary tourist landscape…challenges traditional views which saw Maya involvement in modernization processes as a way to lose the signs of their ethnic identity
but also identities that are continuing to be created and created again

When I booked a stay at the Hilton Cancún Mar Caribe
I expected a cookie-cutter all-inclusive experience
Plus, as someone who prefers adults-only vacations
I wasn't overly excited that the hotel was family-friendly
But after five days on its pristine white-sand beach with my friend and her daughter
The Hilton Enclave rooms
and exclusive amenities — such as an upgraded minibar and access to the Enclave Lounge stocked with top-shelf liquor and gourmet snacks
There were also reserved areas for Hilton Enclave around the resort
which made finding a chair at the beach or pool a breeze
I love that every room at the Hilton Cancún Mar Caribe faces the ocean
I stayed in one of the 61 Enclave suites directly on the beach and loved falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing below
The resort was recently renovated, and the sea-inspired rooms felt super nice, with chic midcentury-modern furniture
My room also had a spa-like bathroom with a full-size soaking tub
perfect for relaxing at the end of a long day in the sun
Hilton Enclave guests have access to Chala
a private rooftop bar with gorgeous infinity pools
It was the perfect place to relax with a book and catch the sunset
In addition to jaw-dropping views, the rooftop bar served all-you-can-eat, freshly made ceviche from different regions in Mexico
I also discovered my new favorite poolside drink: a cocoberry mojito
It's a twist on the traditional mojito with coconut rum
adults-only infinity pools overlooking the ocean
These were the perfect spots to relax without the kids
My friend's daughter loved hanging out in the kids club
which offered daily activities plus a large selection of games
I've seen my fair share of kids clubs during my travels
Azulinda also has made-to-order crepes — something I've never seen at another all-inclusive
My go-to afternoon snack was a ham-and-cheese crepe
Though there was no shortage of typical all-inclusive eats — such as burgers
and nachos — I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of food available around the resort
I loved the wood-fired pizza and creamy risotto at La Luce
The pad thai at the Asian-fusion restaurant Noriku was also delicious
I didn't expect to find amazing cocktails at a family-friendly, all-inclusive resort
I'm still thinking of the passionfruit margarita I had at the lobby bar
which was made with fresh juice and garnished with a preserved orange slice
aesthetically pleasing corners of this resort
and the beach bar in the Hilton Enclave area was no exception
The bar makes an excellent mojito with fresh lime juice and mint
I loved hanging out on its swings and enjoying the ocean view with a drink in my hand
I'm so glad I went to the spa during my stay because it was one of the highlights of my trip
After receiving an incredibly relaxing massage
which included a series of pools in a lush tropical garden
Mar Caribe, or the Caribbean Sea
The water was impossibly turquoise and always the perfect temperature
Paired with gorgeous weather and endless mojitos
I spent most of my days alternating between my lounge chair and swimming in the waves
but this alone makes me want to visit Hilton Cancún Mar Caribe again
and civil society representatives attended the UN system-wide side event on "Cities and Climate Change: Enhancing mitigation and adaptation action" held in Cancun
Mexico on 8 December as part of the climate change conference
UNISDR Deputy Director Helena Molin Valdes discussed the "Making Cities Resilient" campaign
and how the UN is helping member cities respond to climate change
This is done by improving their understanding of disaster risk
including through up-to-date data on hazards and vulnerabilities
The campaign also promotes investment in critical infrastructure
using early warning systems and facilitating city-to-city learning.
