200 health professionals have shown their support to Doctor Arroyo through a collection of signatures
they have denounced the situation of the tolosarras: "The signatories want to show our support to Dr
we wish to denounce the situation of the inhabitants of Tolosaldea
who are being treated differently from other citizens of Gipuzkoa and the Autonomous Community"
The signatories cited "irregularities" at the Clínica de la Asunción
where they explained that doctors without a specialty degree are working on it
They therefore urge the Basque Government Department of Health (PNV-PSE-EE) to immediately resolve this "serious situation": "We call on the Department of Health to resolve the situation immediately and without delay
We know that he has been aware of the matter for some time before the investigation of the complaints and the prosecutor
This serious situation endangers the citizenship of Tolosaldea"
The topic under investigation by the prosecutor
also refers to the agreement between Inviza
the signatories urge the Department of Health to comply with the provisions of the Convention: "The agreement shows that the specialization service in Tolosaldea must be provided by qualified specialist physicians
Compliance is verified by the Tolosaldea Integrated Health Organization and the Osakidetza Territorial Delegation
Osakidetza has the power to resolve the agreement."
the signatories add the following: "We do not want to leave it unspecified that those responsible for the issue are informed and have done nothing to remedy the situation," he added
The Portal de Tolosaldea exposes in the Clínica Asunción the investigation opened by the prosecutor:
The Office of the Prosecutor has opened an investigation to determine the situation of doctors working in the clinic of the Asunción
although they do not have an approved degree in Spain
received complaints in 2019 about doctors from the Asunción Clinic
so she referred the matter to the Prosecutor’s Office in Gipuzkoa
The Public Prosecutor’s Office investigates an alleged crime of intrusion
as doctors with titles that are not approved in Spain work in the clinic of the Asunción
Coordinator Tolosaldea Osasun Publikoa Alde has also denounced this situation
the Public Prosecutor’s Office opened the court and several witnesses have already passed through the Donostia-San Sebastián Criminal Court
The Department of Health of the Basque Government has published that Osakidetza has not wanted to talk about any particular topic and has not heard about the research

Starting in 1908, the campus was built according to the Spanish Colonial Revival Style, which early donor Mr. Russ chose after falling in love with it during a visit to California (see article)
Example of this initial phase are College (now Cole) Hall
ornate decorations around the frames of the entry doors
the style was picked up again in University Hall
in what we could call the revival of the revival
and has stayed since then in the new buildings or the renovation of the existing ones
albeit in increasingly simplified forms over time
This project looks at the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture
a late 1800s-early 1900s revisitation and expansion on the Spanish Mission style of the early Spanish imperial period in the U.S
as a way to explore transnational connections across such diverse spaces as Spain
the Mediterranean at large including Italy
An obvious question for a first-time visitor at MSU is: What does the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style have to do with a New Jersey campus
The project aims at researching the history of the architecture of the Montclair State University campus
while inserting it in the broader history of the circulation of colonial baroque in the Spanish Empire
The irony embedded in the original choice of style lies in the fact that today Montclair State University is a Higher Ed institution with a large and growing percentage of Hispanic students
What kind of opportunities does this coincidence open up in the understanding of forms of transnational relocation and belonging
The project’s methodology includes research at the Montclair State University library for materials about the campus history; and at the Avery Architectural Library
Columbia University for the sources focusing on the Spanish Mission and Spanish Colonial Revival Styles
The project involves interviews with architects such as Frank Gerard Godlewski; and a collaboration with Isaak J
Liptzin of Awen on the filming of the interviews and the campus buildings as well as the editing and overall production of the final short
The project is part of a larger endeavor launched in 2021, called Memoria Presente, created in part in response to Montclair State University’s federal designation as Hispanic Serving Institution in 2016. Memoria Presente: The Common Spanish Legacy in Italian and Latin American Cultures is an open-access digital archive that hosts a set of interdisciplinary materials highlighting these connections in literature
A future section will be devoted to Art and Architecture and the final video of the Undergraduate Research Program project will be available there

Forty-nine members of a group of migrants who went missing in San Luis Potosí on May 16 have been rescued
President López Obrador announced at his Thursday morning press conference
The search continues for the two bus drivers who were transporting them
The migrants disappeared at around 2 a.m
when their bus was intercepted near Matehuala
Nine were found later that day walking along a highway near the municipality of Doctor Arroyo
They confirmed to authorities that the group had been kidnapped but that they had managed to escape
“The first migrants gave us the information that they had arrived at a gas station to refuel
and there they had been approached by members of organized crime,” Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval said at the presidential press conference
Six more migrants were rescued on Wednesday in the Matehuala area
The migrants rescued on Wednesday gave authorities information that allowed them to locate 33 more people held captive on a farm in the community of Cruz de Elorza
on the border between San Luis Potosí and Nuevo León
in a security operation lasting more than six hours
the San Luis Potosí Attorney General’s Office said
Brazil and Cuba — were transferred to a National Migration Institute facility in San Luis Potosí
Two more migrants and two bus drivers remain missing
The rescued migrants say they were kidnapped near the town of Los Medina
in Nuevo León and that the kidnappers argued that the bus had passed through the area several times without “reporting” to their criminal gang
people claiming to belong to the Gulf Cartel contacted the bus company
demanding a US $1,500 ransom for each victim
Earlier reports had stated that the total number of missing people at 52
but Sandoval hesitated to specify the number of missing migrants at Thursday’s press conference
saying that they were interviewing the rescued migrants to determine how many more of their traveling companions are missing
It was possible that that as the group is reunited
some would realize that a group member was still missing
Nobody has yet been arrested for the kidnapping
and it has not been confirmed what group was responsible
though he confirmed that the Gulf Cartel operates in the area and that local kidnapping gangs are known to target migrants
In April, more than 100 migrants were kidnapped in the same area
representative of the National Confederation of Mexican Transporters (Conatram) in San Luis Potosí
called for the federal government and state police to reinforce security on the highways to control crime
“The reality of the National Guard is that it is overwhelmed and does not have the capacity to monitor the roads,” he said
Cresencio stressed that 650 National Guard agents had been deployed to locate the missing migrants
and the search continues to locate the missing drivers
but [the investigations] continue,” Cresencio said
“The migrants will obviously give us some data that can help us identify the people who did this.”

where he completed an intern year in general surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital
as well as a two-year postdoctoral focusing on the molecular mechanisms of renal salt reabsorption
Arroyo completed internal medicine and nephrology training as part of the physician-scientist training program
He was recently awarded the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation — the nation’s largest philanthropy dedicated solely to health — to study alternative functions of vasopressin
although it is truly a team effort,” Arroyo said
“Without the support I’ve gotten from my mentors and close collaborators
I would never have gotten where I am today
Terker completed his medical school training and graduate work at Oregon Health and Science University
where he studied distal nephron regulation of sodium and potassium transport
he completed his internal medicine residency
and he currently works in the laboratory of Raymond Harris
to better understand the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of both acute and chronic kidney disease
“It’s nice to receive this recognition,” Terker said
“I’ve been fortunate to have trained at great institutions with incredible mentors and colleagues
I hope it signals the beginning of a long career where I am not only able to do great science
but also train the next generation of physician-scientists.”

Funds raised will go toward establishing UT’s first LGBT scholarship
It was Barnes who approached Sheldon about creating a scholarship to honor Arroyo and former UT student Troy Anaya Jr.
I spent some time with a few students who were active in Spectrum [now called Prism] and dear friends with him,” Barnes said
“We were talking about how much we loved Troy and how we really wanted to do something special to remember his presence in our lives and to celebrate him
We were also reflecting on how impactful the lack of financial resources was in his life
and so it wasn’t a big leap to think about creating a scholarship in his name.”
The Anaya/Arroyo Scholarship will be for one or more LGBT-identified undergraduates
The goal is to award the first scholarship in 2018
“When I put those two last names together in my head
Two beautiful Latino names with all those remarkably similar vowel sounds and the enthusiasm of the letter ‘y,’ which rarely gets its due in English,” Sheldon said
“Although Troy and Rane never knew each other personally
believes they would have gotten along famously
He had a way of making people feel accepted because he genuinely accepted them
He also had a great sense of humor and love of life
He was just really fun to be around,” Barnes said
“As gay Latinos from working class backgrounds
both Rane and Troy faced multiple oppressions
intelligence and shining personalities by creating a path to higher education for someone similarly situated in the matrix of cultural privilege and oppression
I am certain that being remembered in this way would make them both proud.”
After the read-in, donations can be made to the Anaya/Arroyo Scholarship through the UT Foundation at give2ut.utoledo.edu
“We hope this event will help us to begin to amass a small fortune to help LGBT students here at the University for many years to come,” Sheldon said
The read-in is one of several events taking place at UT in honor of National LGBTQ History Month. Read more here

Twelve bodies dumped across multiple locations
Three presumed cartel members killed in shootouts with police
All that happened in the northern border state of Nuevo León in the past two days
State authorities reported that heads and other body parts of at least 12 male victims were found at seven locations in the metropolitan area of Monterrey on Tuesday
The grisly discoveries were reminiscent of the 2010s when cartel violence plagued the state capital
Messages left alongside the human remains were signed by the Northeast Cartel
which is based in the neighboring state of Tamaulipas
“A purge within an organized crime group … due to disloyalty” is believed to be the most likely motive for the murders
according to Nuevo León Security Minister Gerardo Palacios Pámanes
He said that authorities believed that members of a rival criminal group had infiltrated the Northeast Cartel and were found out
The general secretary of the Nuevo León government
suggested they were members of the Sinaloa Cartel
which is involved in a turf war with the Northeast Cartel in northeastern Mexico
State Attorney General Pedro Arce said that authorities will review security camera footage to try to identify the people who dumped bags and coolers containing human remains in Monterrey and nearby municipalities that are part of the city’s metropolitan area
state authorities carried out operations in the municipalities of General Bravo
Los Aldamas and Doctor Arroyo and arrested 11 presumed criminals
one of whom was wounded in a shootout with police and admitted to hospital
are members of the Northeast Cartel and linked to the murder of the men whose bodies were dumped on Tuesday
Los Aldamas and Doctor Arroyo are all on the border with Tamaulipas
The first two are located in eastern Nuevo León while Doctor Arroyo is in the south of the state
Palacios also reported that three presumed criminals were killed in clashes with police
One death occurred in Los Aldamas and two in Doctor Arroyo
One of the slain men allegedly planned and may have perpetrated the murder of the director of the Linares municipal police in June
The security minister said that police on Wednesday seized 24 firearms whose use is restricted to the army as well as two grenades and eight vehicles
One police officer was shot in the leg during the confrontation in Doctor Arroyo
In addition to clashing with police on patrol
cartel henchmen attacked two police stations
one in Iturbide and another in the neighboring municipality of Linares
Cartel members also set up fiery blockades on the Carretera Nacional (National Highway)
which links Monterrey to locations in the south of Nuevo León
including ones created by setting hijacked trucks and buses on fire
were set up at at least five locations in the municipalities of Hualahuises
The newspaper Milenio reported that traffic was blocked in both directions due to the blockades
Security forces and firefighters responded and brought the situation under control
15 of Nuevo León’s 51 municipalities reported being “under criminal siege” in the past two days
Eight of the municipalities are in the Monterrey metropolitan area and seven are in the south of the state
blockades and other “violent events” occurred in those municipalities
Palacios said on Wednesday that municipal, state and federal authorities are working together on security challenges in Nuevo León, an industrial powerhouse and a hub for foreign investment
“And that’s the way we’ll continue,” the security minister said
“Nuevo León doesn’t have the option of dropping its guard
Nuevo León will never stop doing what is necessary to built lasting peace,” he said

the comedian railed against streaming platform Max’s rebranding and brought his own personal doctor to monitor his temperature
O’Brien admitted to Hot Ones host Sean Evans that
eating spicy wings was going to be something of a challenge for him
“I grew up in an Irish house,” O’Brien said
I never saw a spice till I was about 52 years old.” Given that
O’Brien brought to the taping an alleged “personal physician” named Dr
would periodically assist the comic and monitor his temperature during the episode
I run a little cool,” said O’Brien at the top of the episode
Perhaps inspired by the spiciness of the wings
the veteran late-night host also revealed the worst thing that talk show guests routinely do: tell the audience the interview isn’t going well
and I’d see 200 souls leave 200 bodies and float up through the ceiling,” O’Brien said
“Because they were just told they were not getting a good show
‘You’re getting the greatest show in the world.’”
He also shared that he might have predicted the timing of a stalwart actor’s demise
O’Brien explained that he’d sometimes say outlandish things during interviews just to keep his guests on their toes
‘I bet you live four more years tops,’ and you can see them get a little rattled,” said O’Brien

said his long-standing platform in education during a career in Waterbury
schools has been that students need to “read
“I’ve seen what happens when students don’t have the foundation skills
when reading and writing and calculating are not automatic,” he said
Arroyo said his first goal here is to “implement what the people
what the teachers need for students to be better prepared with those foundation skills.”
I want our students to play – when they play
listening and learning are my first priorities,” Arroyo said
in order to implement some of the best education practices he’s learned as required
“I’ve had the great experience of working with such a vast array of students and educators from vast backgrounds,” he said
which he said fits well with his eclectic interests in general
“I’m the type of person who just sees people as human beings and just wants to work with everyone and help build and grow
I think that is the best part about meeting new people and working with new people ..
And the fact I’m privileged to work with elementary students now will be a great opportunity to help provide a foundation
The new principal was chosen unanimously for the $119,700 position in late June by the Southwest Vermont Union School District Board on a recommendation by Superintendent Jim Culkeen
The Connecticut native most recently worked as a principal on special assignment in Waterbury schools
Arroyo also has worked as an assistant principal
alternative school principal and technology education teacher in the Waterbury schools (beginning in 2002)
and as an adjunct instructor at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford
Arroyo received a master’s in education from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford in 2012
a doctorate degree in education from the University of Hartford in 2018
and an advanced certificate in intermediate administration from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut in 2020
Asked about the range of experience noted on his resume
Arroyo said he first worked as a garbage collector for the city of Waterbury
then as a custodian — including in a school he served years later as principal
He also has served as a volunteer with the Wolcott (Conn.) Volunteer Fire Department
Arroyo said the urban schools he has worked in in the city of about 115,000 were larger than Bennington Elementary
but what he has learned should apply here as well
It does take a community to raise children
and he wants to partner with the community in that regard
“This is a great honor to me,” he said of being chosen for his new position
and how it all came about “almost seems like a Hallmark [channel] movie.”
Arroyo said he was asked toward the end of his interview process for the Bennington Elementary job
He said he and his wife had been visiting areas of Vermont for more than 30 years
They soon began looking at property in town
“And then having the opportunity to be part of the community for almost three years now — just being at the parades
just going and being part of the community,” Arroyo said
Arroyo’s appointment filled the second of two vacancies that coincided this year in Bennington elementary schools
He replaces Elizabeth Grunberg who announced her resignation in January
shortly after it was reported in the media that the school had a high number of police calls for help with “out of control” students
that Bennington Elementary was not alone in seeking increased police assistance to handle student safety issues
and they did not draw a connection between the resignation and student behavioral issues at the school
Following the media reports of numerous police calls, a group of citizens formed the Bennington Cares group in December 2022 to explore ways of providing support for students and teachers at the elementary schools
Molly Stark Elementary also had a principal vacancy this year, which was filled earlier in June. Terrence Killory
who was hired in 2022 as assistant principal was approved by the school board as principal on a permanent basis
School officials said at the time that she would be on approved medical leave through June

Like Buster Keaton, Gene Kelly, and Jackie Chan before him, Conan O’Brien shows his genius in his adaptivity, the ability to insert himself into any setting and incorporate its material into the contours of his act. He gave a tour-de-force demonstration during his recent, instantly viral
where he treated the show’s premise – guests eat chicken wings while answering questions – as a jumping-off point for his own anarchic brand of comedy
He brought along his longtime staff writer José Arroyo in character as “Dr Arroyo”
an incompetent yet affordable physician on hand to ensure that O’Brien’s gentle Irish constitution could withstand all the spice
O’Brien stashed the bones in his pocket until it bulged to capacity
at which point he started stuffing them in Dr Arroyo’s lab coat
He maintained his composure admirably through the escalating Scoville spiciness scores
only to hit a sudden wall on the penultimate wing and swiftly lose his mind
Expelling rivers of phlegm and drooling mouthfuls of milk
he then delivered a manic yet moving grand-finale soliloquy on the beauty of humor coming from anywhere
O’Brien has shown a defiant commitment to pursuing his muses down their strangest avenues
then finding success anywayO’Brien had dropped by Hot Ones to promote Conan O’Brien Must Go
a travel series new to Max (“That really rolls off the tongue,” he mocked the streaming service formerly known as HBO) that he hopes will leave viewers with less knowledge about the parts abroad he visits
He considers himself less of a cultural ambassador than a roving clown
forever searching for fresh settings he can bounce himself off of
where he visits a salmon farm and learns about Vikings
but mostly is there to make the acquaintance of Jarle
a Crocs-clad rapper O’Brien spends most of the encounter faux-berating for his shabby clothes
disorderly apartment and questionable hygiene
The outpouring of appreciation underscored the exceptional enduring appeal of this self-determined cult figure who’s gone where no one else on late night dared venture – not just geographically
as an anomaly amid today’s flattened late-night landscape of broad agreeability
The details of O’Brien’s professional trajectory have ossified into comedy legend
in part for how they imply a defiant commitment to pursuing his muses down their strangest avenues
A big-break position on the writing staff of Saturday Night Live in 1988 led him to a spot in the writers’ room for The Simpsons during an unimpeachable early run that still places the show near the forefront of the Greatest Sitcom of All Time conversation
His sensibility – best exemplified in the episode Marge vs the Monorail
which paid homage to The Music Man and the disaster epics of Irwin Allen between jokes about Leonard Nimoy and a mutant squirrel with laser eyes – favored a winning combination of density
When David Letterman acrimoniously parted ways with NBC and O’Brien landed the vacant Late Night gig in 1993 despite “about 40 seconds” of on-camera experience
he gained just the right platform for his singular brand of shtick: at half-past midnight
he reached a national audience of insomniacs willing to follow him wherever he led
only for the pooch to pull out a gun and shoot him dead
venturing beyond the boundaries of network sparked constant surges of creativity
whether on TBS (where a trim to a half-hour runtime in the final episodes of Conan compelled O’Brien to ditch the suit and embrace a stripped-down approach to talk TV) or in his loose
O’Brien inspires a rare degree of devotion specifically for how his work speaks to the sort of person who cares about TVEverything about O’Brien – his love of esoterica
his constant raging against the machine – sets him apart from the modern late-night pack and reiterates his vital importance to a form largely neutered
Between the middle-of-the-road Jimmy Kimmel
and even the reliably funny yet safe Seth Meyers
nobody’s even making an attempt to fill the void of chaos O’Brien left behind
a niche program broadcast on Cartoon Network’s wee-small-hours Adult Swim block
His closest peer was the equally screwloose Craig Ferguson
who ceded his seat to the unspeakable James Corden
whose much-reviled tenure brought The Late Late Show to a permanent end
(That time slot is now filled by After Midnight
a panel-style game show hosted by Taylor Tomlinson.)

For a glorious moment stretching out over a quarter-century
comedy nerds with off-center tastes could watch magnificently bizarre
surreal spectacles produced under the auspices of corporate funding; a kindred nut improbably handed the keys to the kingdom
He still is: Conan O’Brien Must Go shows that he hasn’t lost an iota of his demented underdog hustle over the years
he stops by a radio program in Buenos Aires with an estimated three to four listeners in an effort to boost its reach
O’Brien point-blank asks: “How are we making money here?” to which he’s corrected: “We’re actually losing money
we have always lost money.” Like any straight man worth his salt
but you can tell that he’s pleased by this

When Conan O'Brien began his recent appearance on Hot Ones by saying he's "terrible" with hot food, apparently it's not because it burns his mouth. Turns out, he just meant that hot sauce turns him maniacal.
O'Brien joined Sean Evans to promote his upcoming show, Conan O'Brien Must Go, coming April 18. For the occasion, he brought his "not very good" doctor of over 30 years, Dr. Arroyo, to do regular temperature checks.
Mementos were also important to the comedian, who kept stuffing his eaten wing bones into his pockets until he eventually ran out of room. Surprisingly, he didn't feel the heat until the third-last wing, when he started drinking the hot sauce straight out of the bottle and rubbing it on his nips. So hot (literally).
Other highlights include O'Brien calling Richard Nixon a "comedic figure" and knocking over all the sauces at the end of the interview. Watch it all happen below.

Alina Amaral is living her veterinary dream
She was 5-years-old and Gordy weighed 250 pounds
Amaral raised him with loving care that defied her tiny stature
She still remembers bringing him to the livestock show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco
It was because of Gordy that Amaral always knew what she wanted to be when she grew up -- a veterinarian
Being a vet is a child’s dream job ranking right up there with professional athlete
but what makes Amaral special is she had the intellect and fortitude to reach for her star and attain it
Amaral received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from Western University of Health Sciences last May
and is now a vet at Arroyo Veterinary Hospital
She had job offers in Iowa and Northern and Central California
but was thrilled to be able to accept the position at Arroyo and return to her hometown and her family’s ranch on 10 acres off Arnold Drive
I’m not planning on going anywhere else anytime soon,” she said
Amaral graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a bachelor’s in animal science with a pre-vet concentration
After a year working as a vet tech at Sonoma Animal Hospital she spent four years at Western
There she learned about all veterinary specialties – small animal
“I wanted to be proficient in all species,” she said
She liked the small animal (dogs and cats and the occasional hamster) and food animal (cattle and swine) concentrations the best
Now she is enjoying work experience in both fields
and helping her parents care for and breed nine registered Angus at the Amaral Cattle Company
And her Australian Shepard Cinch is her best buddy
Amaral has been involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America her whole life
including helping younger students learn to raise animals
Now that she is back in town she’s once again spending her spare time with students
“I am very involved with youth agriculture,” she said
During her own years at Prestwood Elementary
Adele Harrison Middle School and Sonoma Valley High School (‘08) she raised many
Horseback riding is favorite pastime when she has the opportunity
And someday there may be a horse in her future
To find a job in vet medicine here is such a surprise
It is so nice I’m able to come back here.” Amaral said her parents
and added that her younger sister Suzanne recently returned home after college
and is now a teacher at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa
Jorge Arroyo isn’t certain whether he was injected with Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine or a placebo when he volunteered to receive two shots four weeks apart during the summer
Participants and researchers in the study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital were kept in the dark to eliminate the power of suggestion
The Harvard-affiliated ophthalmologist ― one of about 30,000 participants in the Cambridge biotech’s nationwide trial ― says he began feeling ill about 10 hours following the second shot
as plans are put into action for the expected rollout this month of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines on an emergency basis
Arroyo is urging people to get their shots “as soon as it becomes available to you.” He says the side effects
would be a small price to pay for the benefits of immunization
associate chief of ophthalmology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
I imagine I’d feel much worse and possibly dying.”
the malaise he felt the morning after receiving the second shot in his left shoulder didn’t stop him from working out with a 150-pound barbell at his Brookline house
says he has described his experience to about 100 of his eye patients
and roughly half of his patients speak Spanish
Many are skeptical of getting a vaccine despite the disproportionate toll the epidemic has taken on Hispanic people
an infectious-diseases specialist at the Brigham who was among three investigators who led the nationwide late-stage trial of Moderna’s vaccine
said the side effects described by Arroyo were in line with those experienced by some other participants
“Most people don’t actually have the reaction [he did]
and that’s the pattern that’s been seen,” Baden said
“There are increased reactions after the second dose
It comes on pretty quickly ― 10 or 15 hours after the second vaccination ― and then it’s gone by the next day.”
who doesn’t know which participants got the vaccine and which got the placebo
likened the potential side effects to those reported by some recipients of Shingrix
a vaccine for shingles made by GlaxoSmithKline that was approved in 2017
so the day after the second [coronavirus] shot
you’re not surprised that you have some degree of discomfort,” Baden said
An independent board that evaluated Moderna’s study results for the National Institutes of Health found no serious safety concerns and determined that the vaccine was more than 94 percent effective at preventing COVID-19
The two-dose vaccine developed by Pfizer and a German biotechnology partner
uses the same technology and generated similar results
An advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration plans to vote Thursday on whether the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine should be authorized for emergency use by people at high risk for catching the coronavirus or who are likely to get severely ill because they are older or have underlying conditions
The same committee is expected to vote on Moderna’s vaccine on Dec
At least 500 volunteers received shots at Moderna’s trial site at the Brigham
Moderna had about 100 such sites across the country
who shared his story after the Globe contacted the Brigham
“we are in the middle of a major trust deficit.” As a retina surgeon
he treats many patients whose vision problems stem from diabetes
a significant risk factor for suffering severe COVID-19
at least once a week he visits his 79-year-old mother
Their only side effects were slightly sore shoulders
which led them to believe they may have gotten a placebo
But the night of their second shots in early September
The couple’s temperatures were slightly elevated but within the normal range
They were still under the weather the following morning
Researchers believe immunity kicks in one to two weeks after the second shot
Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines rely on synthetic messenger RNA
a variation on the natural substance that directs protein production in cells throughout the body
The vaccines contain custom-made messenger molecules that instruct cells to create part of the coronavirus and then stimulate the immune system to make antibodies to fend off the disease if exposed to the actual virus
is without a doubt in my mind the simplest and safest way to give your immune system an appetizer
of a potentially lethal pathogen that it otherwise would not be exposed to,” Arroyo said
Although the FDA said months ago it would probably approve a vaccine that was safe and at least 50 percent effective
the mRNA vaccines performed far better than that
Arroyo said when he recently read that Moderna’s data showed its vaccine was more than 94 percent effective
said he would gladly take the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine when one becomes available
He expects to be among the earliest recipients because he treats patients with COVID-19 and is at high risk for catching it
He expects the FDA will also soon discuss when to inform people in the Pfizer and Moderna trials whether they got a vaccine or a placebo
has said his firm is morally obliged to offer the vaccine early to people in the placebo group because they volunteered for the study
Arroyo said that if he finds out he got the vaccine
we would not be in the situation we’re in now,” he said

A former Harvard professor and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center doctor has had eight research studies or abstracts retracted by three different medical journals for problems with critical oversight approvals for the research
include one published in Wiley Online Library in June 2021 that was retracted in February because the study was conducted in a way that differed from the protocol approved by BIDMC
published in March 2021 in Translational Vision Science & Technology
was retracted in March for failing to obtain institutional approval at all
Six abstracts — summaries of clinical trials — that were led by Arroyo and presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Annual Meetings in 2019
were published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science journals and also were retracted in March for either failing to obtain approvals at all or failing to stick to the approved procedures
known as “institutional review board” or “internal review board” approvals
are required for all research involving human subjects
the journals called the problems “a serious issue.”
The news was first reported by the blog Retraction Watch
Arroyo was a Harvard Medical School teacher and director of Retina Service at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for 18 years
Wiley said they were notified of the IRB issues
Arroyo now works as a vitreoretinal surgeon for Boston Vision
a private practice with multiple locations in Massachusetts
Arroyo said he would rather not discuss the retractions and said he preferred not to say anything about the timing of his departure from BIDMC
and all I can say is people make mistakes,” he said
He later added in a statement that the articles were retracted “as part of my cooperation with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center during their review of this matter.”
The retractions include studies that used noninvasive technology to measure blood flow in the retina
dozens of people given oxygen through face masks for several hours
and a medical gas mixture of carbon dioxide in medical oxygen to study changes in the eye
At least one study recruited patients from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Eye Clinic
Another used subjects diagnosed by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s retina services
said the hospital did not inform patients who were in the retracted clinical trials because they were receiving supplemental oxygen as part of their clinical care and not just through a clinical trial
The health system also said the patients consented to the treatment and weren’t harmed by the treatment
The health system noted Arroyo no longer worked for the hospital
“We uphold the highest research standards and rigorously maintain the integrity of our research,” said Terri Janos
“Any concerns are thoroughly reviewed in accordance with institutional policies and applicable regulations.”
which oversees clinical trials at BIDMC and functions as the institution’s IRB
Harvard Medical School referred questions to BIDMC
saying the institution oversaw the research
Industry experts voiced concern about the retractions and said seeking IRB approval is so fundamental to conducting clinical trials with human subjects that it is almost mundane
“You cannot recruit research subjects without IRB approval
Ethics & Human Rights at Boston University School of Public Health
Usually you say that on every application that goes to a journal
Arroyo is also not new to clinical research
According to his biography with Boston Vision
he has published over 60 studies in peer-reviewed journals
Institutions that conduct research involving human subjects typically convene a panel of experts that must review clinical trials before they commence
According to the Food and Drug Administration
which has developed regulations overseeing how institutional review boards function
and more to protect the rights and welfare of the people who agree to participate
BIDMC’s Committee on Clinical Investigations stipulates that before the committee reviews a research proposal
the proposal is analyzed by the scientific review officer
evaluating if there is merit to justify using human subjects
that the risks of clinical trials with humans outweigh the rewards
that the potential risks have been accurately and fully described in the consent form
and that there is adequate safety monitoring of the research
IRB reviews help patients differentiate between things that are treatment and things that are research
“You need expert outside people to distinguish between research and treatment
and that whoever is doing the research knows what they are doing,” Annas said
Delivering oxygen also isn’t so innocuous as to not require oversight
Annas said the risks of high amounts of oxygen are well known and said premature babies given too much oxygen are at risk of going blind
founder of the Lisa Schwartz Foundation for Truth in Medicine
said IRB approval typically is conducted before people are recruited for a trial
Even studies involving surveys must go through IRB approval
“There are historically horrible examples that stuff under the name of research has gone horribly wrong,” he said
“The idea is to protect people and the system works so people feel good about being involved and the risks they are taking are worthwhile.”
a bioethicist at NYU Grossman School of Medicine
said there are no regulations that require researchers or institutional review boards to notify patients who participate in retracted research
you have an ethical duty to tell subjects what happened,” Caplan said
This story has been updated to reflect that news of the retractions was first reported by the blog Retraction Watch

Comedian and former ‘Late Night’ host was the latest celebrity to face the infamous ‘wings of death’

Hot Ones fans are in stitches over Conan O’Brien’s appearance on the popular First We Feast YouTube series
The former Late Night host and comedian
was the latest celebrity to take the hot seat on Sean Evans’s famous interview show
which sees guests answer tough questions while eating chicken wings topped with progressively spicier hot sauces
Asked about his comfort level with spicy food
O’Brien responds: “I grew up in an Irish Catholic home in Boston
I never saw a spice until I was about 52 years old.”
the former Tonight Show host introduced his “personal physician”
who took a baseline read of O’Brien’s temperature before admitting he had no medical qualifications
O’Brien continued to boast about how well he was handling the heat
“I don’t think there’s a wing here that I can’t eat like it’s ice cream,” he says
I don’t think there’s a wing on this table that I cannot devour like it’s cool whipped cream!”
the comedian was a mess with orange hot sauce dripping down his chin
You didn’t come up with one wing that had an effect on Conan
several X users were quick to heap praise on O’Brien for his appearance
“Conan O’Brien on Hot Ones is pure comedic genius,” one wrote
“This may have been the best episode of hot ones I’ve ever seen
Conan is a national treasure,” said another
A third added: “An absolute masterclass in television
Earlier this week, O’Brien, who is currently doing press for his forthcoming travel series, Conan O’Brien Must Go, made his triumphant return to The Tonight Show for the first time in 14 years since his abrupt exit as host in 2010
“I haven’t been in this building for such a long time, and I haven’t been on this floor in forever,” O’Brien told host Jimmy Fallon, adding that it felt “weird to come back”.
Conan O’Brien Must Go debuts on 18 April on Max in the US. The series will follow O’Brien as he travels to locations such as Ireland, Thailand, Argentina and Norway and takes in the local culture, cuisine, and sights.

MD is heading to Tokyo later this week after being named a Team USA physician for the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games in Japan
“I am truly honored and humbled to have been selected as a sports medicine physician for Team USA.” Said Fow
“Being a physician for Team USA in Tokyo will be a major milestone in my sports medicine career.”
Fow is a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon practicing in San Luis Obispo County at Arroyo Grande Specialty Center
He is the Team Physician for Nipomo and Morro Bay High Schools and is employed by Dignity Health’s Pacific Central Coast Health Centers (PHC)
It's hard to be away from the family for three weeks
but it's such a great opportunity that's once in a lifetime
The trip will actually mark the second time Fow has worked as a Team USA physician during an Olympics
he served the United States beach volleyball team that won gold and silver medals in the women's tournament
"The first time I went it was with beach volleyball
so it was setting up a treatment center just for that
This one is where you're treating all the athletes where they're coming through the high performance center
so I'll have the opportunity to meet a huge variety of athletes
which is in and of itself is pretty amazing."
He was also a team physician for Paralympic athletes at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima
Peru and head team physician at the ANOC 2019 World Beach Games in Doha
The Olympics Games were originally scheduled to begin July 2020
but have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic
COVID-19 will be a major storyline throughout the Games
especially since the pandemic has postponed the event by an entire year
"I think the main goal is to be as safe as possible for the athletes and the host country
no matter what they're concerns are," said Fow
"A lot of the athletes and myself are vaccinated and being periodically tested is just a small price to pay to be able to have the Olympics."
organizers recently announced spectators will not be allowed to attend the events
I think you respond to fans in the stands," said Fow
they're going to miss out a little bit on having the fans motivate them and responding to the fans in the stands."
The 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo will run from July 23-August 8

Never one to shy away from going to unhinged extremes in order to make an audience laugh
not only did Conan devour the intensely spicy chicken wings (despite admitting that he never tasted spice until he was “about 52 years old”) he taunted host Sean Evans over the tame offerings
then proceeded to douse his wings in more hot sauce and even drank directly from the bottles
Conan was ranting and raving like a pepper-addled maniac
with a face that resembled a velvet painting of a sad clown that had been left outside in a rainstorm
Naturally, seeing Conan gulp down hot sauce like it was fresh water on a warm summer’s day caused some viewers to become skeptical, and question whether or not the sauce Conan consumed was “real or fake.” The best evidence for this
But Conan can be seen unwrapping the seals of several of the hot sauce bottles
it was a pretty elaborate undertaking that required far more work than buying a lab coat for one of his writers
A number of Simpsons fans couldn’t help but playfully compare Conan’s Hot Ones appearance and the classic episode “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)” in which Homer similarly becomes unhinged after tasting a spicy delicacy: a chili made with peppers grown in a “Guatemalan insane asylum.”
Of course, it should be noted that drinking melted candle wax would severely burn someone, something the Fox censors were very worried about when that Simpsons episode first aired. So it’s more likely that Conan endured the pain because he will endure almost anything if he believes that the end result will be funny
he elucidated this exact philosophy during a 2023 episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend with guest Sarah Silverman
claiming that he would happily shatter his pelvis if it got a “really great reaction” from an audience of people
even if he wouldn’t be able to walk for a year afterwards
his first concern would be “how hard did they laugh?”

Arroyo underwent treatment last August for an anatomic problem that caused her to choke on her food
a dzBB report quoted Arroyo's spokesperson Elena Bautista-Horn as saying the former leader's condition has improved such that she is allowed to occasionally remove her titanium neck brace
Horn said removing the brace can also allow the former leader to move her neck and keep her neck muscles from weakening
But Horn was quoted in the report as saying Arroyo must still wear the brace in potentially risky situations
including when climbing stairs or going out of the house
Arroyo had been told by doctors to wear the brace after she was brought to the St
Luke's Medical Center due to a pinched nerve in 2011
she was rushed to the VMMC after choking on a piece of melon and a piece of "bacon-like" meat
Nona Legaspi said they advised Arroyo to rest
after noting she looked dehydrated and "very weak" when she was brought there
She said Arroyo had also been advised that pain can be cumulative
Legaspi also said they have advised Arroyo to "force" herself to eat
Arroyo left the VMMC after a Pasay court allowed her to post a P1-million bail for the electoral sabotage charge against her
She had spent eight months in hospital arrest since Nov
But Arroyo also faces re-arrest if the Sandiganbayan issues a warrant for her arrest for charges of plunder stemming from irregularities at the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office

Philippines – The nephew of Senator Joker Arroyo contested the Senate’s arrest order against him
saying only a judge can issue an arrest warrant
Dr Jack Arroyo wrote Senate blue ribbon committee chairman Teofisto Guingona III
asking him to recall the contempt and arrest order against him in the year-long Senate probe into corruption allegations against opposition standard-bearer Vice President Jejomar Binay
Guingona issued contempt and arrest orders against Arroyo and other alleged Binay dummies for their “continued refusal” to attend the Senate inquiry
Arroyo’s name came up in a May hearing, where Binay critic Renato Bondal said the doctor got 20% in the 2003 joint venture between the University of Makati (UMak) College of Nursing, and the Systems Technology Institute (STI). (READ: Critic: Binay ‘earned’ from Makati nursing school)
Bondal branded Arroyo as a “dummy” of Binay, who had a 1% nominal share in the company created under the joint venture. Senators questioned the joint venture with STI, saying nursing was not its core competency. An ophthalmologist, Arroyo has not attended any Senate hearing since then, and instead issued a statement defending the joint venture.
Arroyo said his lawyers advised him to ask that the contempt and arrest orders be recalled because they violate his rights and due process
He argued that the Senate has no power to arrest him
“Only a judge can issue a warrant of arrest and senators are not judges
That constitutional protection to the citizenry may not be contravened
by granting themselves the forbidden power of arrest,” said Arroyo
Arroyo also cited the Bill of Rights in the 1987 Constitution: “No warrant of arrest shall be issued except upon probable cause to be determined personally by the judge.”
The doctor said that the Senate sergeant-at-arms’ staff acted “like roving policemen looking for arrestees” when the Senate official cannot serve arrest warrants
Arroyo said that he did not attend the last hearing he was invited to because he was on medical mission when the subpoena was served at his residence
He said that instead of asking him to explain his absence
the committee “arbitrarily” cited him in contempt and ordered his arrest
Senators have defended the contempt and arrest orders by citing Senate rules
a committee has the power to summon witnesses
and have them detained under the custody of the sergeant-at-arms
Senators also pointed out that Arroyo’s uncle
and a former representative of the Binay bailiwick of Makati
The Senate has been conducting a record 24-hearing inquiry into allegations that Binay received kickbacks from overpriced Makati infrastructure projects
and used dummies to hide ill-gotten wealth when he was mayor of the financial district for 21 years
Senators openly admit they intend to block Binay’s 2016 presidential bid
Doctor Arroyo questioned the Senate’s procedure of ordering witnesses’ arrest
He said a resource person can only be cited in contempt when he or she is actually before the committee and defies its order
He cited the case of witnesses Jean Arnault in 1949 and former National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales in 2005 whom the Senate ordered detained for refusing to respond to senators’ questions
Arroyo also questioned the February 2013 amendment in the Senate rules that allowed only two senators – the committee chairman and one member – and not a majority or one-third of members to constitute a quorum
“That violates the constitutional injunction that the rights of persons invited to testify should be respected
Two members can speak for the 24-member Senate
and detain witnesses who do not testify according to the pleasures of the chairman and the other members,” he said
Senate blue ribbon subcommittee chairman Aquilino Pimentel III
and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV agreed to issue the contempt and detention orders

Philippines – Supporters of aspiring president and Vice President Leni Robredo filed complaints against a doctor who claimed that the supporters were paid cash to join a caravan supporting Robredo in Marikina in October 2021
consisting of supporters of Marikina’s Pink Caravan
filed multiple complaints of cyber libel against Jack Arroyo in the Quezon City prosecutor’s office
Arroyo is the nephew of late former Senator Joker Arroyo.
Nuns from the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd and a lawyer were among the complainants. The nuns said that the false information posted by Arroyo subjected them “to ridicule
Arroyo claimed that supporters who used campaign materials of Robredo were given P300
Arroyo also attached a photo of a hundred peso bill with a “Dapat si Leni” sticker on the side.
“Every person who would use VP Leni propaganda materials were given P300.00 and a face mask
The owners of cars were given P2,000.00 plus poster and fuschia ribbon,” the post read.
The Robredo supporters launched a caravan on October 23, 2021 where over a hundred vehicles made rounds in Metro Manila to show support for Robredo’s presidential bid.
together with several members of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd
purely out of our enthusiasm for the candidacy of VP Robredo and in the exercise of our rights of assembly and expression.”
The nuns added that they even brought their own food during the caravan.
“We did not get paid to participate; we rode our own cars and contributed our money for gasoline; we brought our own food and water,” the nuns said.
Aside from the false information allegation, Arroyo was previously tagged in an issue involving former Vice President Jejomar Binay. At the height of Senate probes into the alleged corruption of Binay, Arroyo was dubbed as an alleged dummy for Binay
Philippines – The prosecutor in cases against Antonia Park – the stem cell doctor of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo – is seeking her inclusion in the Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) lookout bulletin
In an April 16 memorandum addressed to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima
prosecution lawyer Monica Liwag requested to include Park in BI’s lookout bulletin
“This is to respectfully request for the inclusion of the person of Antonia Carandang-Park aka Zoharina Antonia Pedrera Carandang in the Immigration Look Out Bulletin Order (ILBO),” Liwag wrote
Liwag – the acting city prosecutor of Tagaytay – recommended on December 22
that Park be indicted for one count of illegal practice of medicine and 8 counts of estafa
The Tagaytay Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 18 issued a warrant of arrest against Park on March 30
but she posted bail of P32,000 ($723.85) on April 6
The court acted on charges filed in May 2014 by Bernard Tan
the father of one of Park’s patients
due to a tumor that blocked the entry of blood to her heart
According to the father, Kate started undergoing stem cell treatment in August 2012
and Park allegedly promised to cure the patient in 3 months’ time
The Tans went to Park’s clinic after they saw news of Arroyo seeking alternative treatment there. In July 2012, Park took in Arroyo “for possible stem cell therapy.” Park used the title “MD” in her statement released to the press
Republic Act 2382 or The Medical Act of 1959 considers a person engaged in the practice of medicine when he uses MD after his name
But a Rappler investigative report revealed Park is not licensed to practice in the Philippines – a fact she admitted. (READ: Arroyo’s alternative medicine doctor unlicensed)
After that, the National Bureau of Investigation filed a case against Park for illegal practice of medicine
Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes Tolentino also ordered the closure of Park’s clinic
Green & Young Health & Wellness Center’s
which was listed as a “massage clinic/sauna/turkish/swedish bath.”
Bernard Tan is hopeful about the recent developments in his fight against Park
“That’s why I submitted to the system
at least it is attainable as long as you have the truth on your side,” he said in an interview on Monday
Tan filed a petition before the Department of Justice to review the cases of syndicated estafa and murder against Park
He said he will also clarify with DOJ about the remaining 7 counts of estafa
Iyon ang ine-expect ko sana,” he added
The court has set Park’s arraignment for May 6
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to verify reports that Antonia Park, the stem cell doctor of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, is still giving treatments despite the closure of her clinic in 2014.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima issued a two-page memorandum on August 10
asking the NBI to verify Tan’s allegations that Park is treating patients again in her clinic in Tagaytay
which was ordered closed by the city government in 2014
Park is facing multiple cases, including estafa and illegal practice of medicine, but is currently out on bail.
NBI [is directed] to verify the veracity of the foregoing allegations and to take appropriate action
including the NPS (National Prosecution Service) and Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC),” said De Lima in the memorandum made public on Wednesday
to “help in cracking down the operation of Antonia Carandang-Park.”

De Lima also asked Prosecutor General Claro Arellano of the NPS to give an update on all pending cases against Park, which include illegal practice of medicine, estafa
De Lima has given Arellano and the NBI up to 20 days to report on actions they have taken in relation to the August 10 order
former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo finds it difficult even to swallow a Communion host
This is because Mrs Arroyo often chokes due to a previous operation
said her latest medical report that was submitted to the Pasay Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 112 last week
Her physician at the Makati Medical Center (MMC)
described this condition as life-threatening
Reports on Mrs Arroyo’s supposedly life-threatening condition resurfaced in May, when an anonymous source told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the former President was complaining of a choking sensation “due to the titanium implant that has protruded to her esophagus.” (Read: Arroyo needs another surgery?)
The official report on Mrs Arroyo’s medical condition
which was submitted by the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC)
included the diagnosis of MMC’s Anastacio
The private doctor said Mrs Arroyo reported
including Communion host and medicine.”
visited Anastacio in MMC for further tests in May
Doctors from the VMMC accompanied the former President
the titanium implant is exerting pressure on Mrs Arroyo’s hypopharynx
which connects the nose and mouth to the esophagus
The purpose of the hypopharynx is “to guide food and saliva past the voicebox
and into the esophagus where they travel to the stomach,” said a primer from the Lahey Clinic
a Tufts University School of Medicine teaching hospital
Pressure from the titanium implant is therefore making it difficult for Mrs Arroyo to swallow
The titanium implant is also exerting pressure on Mrs Arroyo’s vagus nerve
“supplies nerve fibers to the pharynx (throat)
Mrs Arroyo’s implant is putting pressure on the vagus nerve’s branch
the recurrent laryngeal nerve “that is very important in relation to swallowing
Mrs Arroyo’s private doctor thus wrote: “The patient symptoms (sic) of swallowing difficulty with choking sensation postoperatively is a dangerous sign against life because of the following:
“the pressure of the titanium plate… affecting the voice box
a dangerous area of life and death (breathing mechanism)
“the pressure of the titanium plate on the vagus nerve affecting the air and food pathway
“seriously” suggested Mrs Arroyo should seek “an opinion in (a) hospital whose expertise is purely repeat reconstructive neuro-cervical surgery.”
the Inquirer’s anonymous source said Mrs Arroyo might need a surgery abroad to remedy her condition
the VMMC Rehabilitation Medicine Department made its own evaluation of Mrs Arroyo’s condition for the month of May
our patient has no additional complaints aside from the previously mentioned attacks of intermittent neck and back pains,” said the VMMC’s Dr Rafaelita Javier in Mrs Arroyo’s medical report
the severity of Mrs Arroyo’s complaints ranges from 8-9/10 to 3/10
the VMMC reported the former President’s complaints “of more frequent choking sensation during mealtime
which is relieved by proper swallowing exercises.”
The former President also says prolonged sitting aggravates her back pain while rest relieves it
“Although her neck range of motion is limited
she is functionally independent with regard (to the) performance of the activities of daily living,” said Javier
The VMMC said Mrs Arroyo needs “continuation of daily sunlight exposure
continuation of physical therapy every other day
The state-run hospital prescribes 16 different types of medication
(Read the full VMMC report with the MMC attachment below.)
It is up to the Commission on Elections (Comelec)
which filed an electoral sabotage case against Mrs Arroyo
to request Pasay RTC Branch 112 to remove the former President from hospital arrest
Comelec legal department head Esmeralda Ladra
said their camp has not discussed such possible motion
Ladra said Comelec is prioritizing the requirements to oppose Mrs Arroyo’s bail petition
The Palace is leaving it to the Pasay RTC to decide on Mrs Arroyo’s arrest
said Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte in another interview
“We have always been in the position that due respect should be accorded to the former President because of her health condition,” Valte said
Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Mrs Arroyo should be transferred to a regular cell “if everything is well with her.” “Hospital arrest should not be used as a basis to feign illness,” Lacierda said
