Isla Mujeres generally has a quieter and more relaxing vibe than what you'll find across the bay in Cancún, and there's just enough here to keep you entertained: scuba diving and snorkeling, visiting a turtle farm or simply swimming and lazing around on the island's gorgeous north shore.

surrounded by an ocean of a thousand hues of turquoise
For decades a destination of the laid back
Times have changed. The island now welcomes hundreds of tourists who come to party on its pure white beaches. Yet the island (“La Isla” as the locals call it) retains its kooky character. There are now some 40 hotels including the newest: the sparkling little gem called Almare.
the entire process will take 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic
you will have your toes in the sand,” the resort’s Director of Sales Ana Leyva told Open Jaw
“We like to think that the ferry is part of the experience.”
As a fellow guest said on the ferry ride over to the island
“Isla Mujeres is more Mexican than Cancun” and indeed looking at Cancun’s massive high rises shimmering away on the horizon it seems as though you’re in another country
Open Jaw recently spent a few days at the hotel
and got to experience what feels like an elegant EP hotel – but with the worry-free convenience of an all-inclusive
It’s located on a slip of white sand beach on the south side of this long
Almare opened just last October and has only 109 rooms served by a staff of 152
Facilities include 4 restaurants/bars plus a “healthy” food truck
This place is 180 degrees from many all-inclusive resorts
No raucous pool volleyball games or the whine of jetskis
guests at Almare are more likely to be offered a morning yoga class on the hotel pier
and a mescal or cacao tasting with an expert
The spa is sure to appeal to clients looking for a totally relaxing experience
Guests are encouraged to let themselves embrace the sacred Mayan energy of the island with a shaman consultation or treatments such as massages
and waxing followed by a visit to the spa’s tranquil garden with plunge pool and jacuzzi
Spa treatments are not included but may be included in some special resort packages
The calibre and presentation of the food was exceptional
From hand-crafted tiny pastries in the coffee shop (where a variety of organic Mexican coffees are served) to the sophisticated elegance of the rooftop
menus feature a blend of international and Mexican cuisine
But this is more than your average tacos-and-tortillas
lunch featured fried plantain with pork belly and chives aioli
or fried crab with burnt eggplant puree and tomatillo jam
The best burger I’ve had in years – and ceviche so fresh and flavourful I was tempted to leave my clothes behind and take a suitcase full of it home
All alcohol is top-shelf and a selection of wines are included
And of course there are lots of exotic Mexican cocktails available from the smiling servers
told Open Jaw that she estimates that a dinner for two of Almare’s calibre
guests are reminded of the island’s rich history
carvings and weavings reflecting the Mayan heritage
“Isla Mujeres has had vast changes in the past 20 years and it’s important we do our best to keep traditions alive,” the hotel’s genial GM Enrique Solare told Open Jaw
A 13-year veteran of Marriott’s Ritz Carlton brand
“We want to make our guests feel safe and welcome in this beautiful quaint place
Getting around is easy: while there are no rental cars on the island
taxis are plentiful (best to agree a rate before getting in) but the most typical way is to rent a golf cart
there’s a host of attractions including a dolphin park as well as an underwater park with over 500 sculptures of people
Plus the absolute must-see: the eye-popping Playa Norte
A vast sweep of talcum power sand fronting shallow warm pale turquoise waters
the Playa is regularly listed as one of the top beaches in the Caribbean
trinkets and more but they are not at all aggressive
but clients should bring their hotel beach towels
The beach is steps from shops with touristy t-shirts
chances are anything will be cheaper when paid for in Mexican pesos.)
Sports around the island include scuba diving
And if clients wish to go into Cancun for a day’s shopping and sightseeing
if there’s space available the hotel’s ferry will cost US$50 round trip
“Our clientele at Almare is primarily couples
aged from their 30s to their 60s,” a Marriott representative told Open Jaw
“But of course we see friends travelling together and multi-gen.” LGBTQ clients are welcome
This resort would also be perfect for weddings
given the resort’s proximity to CUN can make for a lovely 2-centre holiday combed with Cancun or the Riviera Maya
So far there are no Canadian tour operators featuring the property
but fingers are crossed this will change come the fall
In the interim there are attractive introductory rates

"No person or company has requested permits from this office or any other municipal government department for said event," Isla Mujeres' city hall claims

Fyre Festival 2 has been postponed, according to the organizers.Fyre Festival 2 has been "postponed," according to the organizers
Billy McFarland, who was behind the initial Fyre Festival in the Bahamas, was convicted of wire fraud in connection with the failed 2017 festival
which was scheduled to take place in Mexico from May 30 to June 2
was being advertised under the slogan "FYRE Festival 2 is real," with tickets starting at $1,400
"The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced
you can repurchase if it works for your schedule."
Fyre Festival 2 tickets went on sale in February
"I'm sure many people think I'm crazy for doing this again
But I feel I'd be crazy not to do it again."
"After years of reflection and now thoughtful planning
the new team and I have amazing plans for FYRE 2," he added
McFarland's Fyre Fest 2 promised "an electrifying celebration of music
and treasure hunting -- all set in the stunning location of Isla Mujeres
Mexico," according to the event's website
"Experience unforgettable performances
and an atmosphere that redefines creativity and culture," the festival's website continued
Mexico officials with the Quintana Roo Tourism Department and the Playa Del Carmen government said "no event of that name" was to be held there
tourism secretary of the State of Quintana Roo
told ABC News over a phone call that his agency would be the one giving permission for that kind of festival
but Fyre Fest 2 was not something he was informed about
nor was an event by that name happening in Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres
the official government X account for Playa del Carmen also posted a statement and confirmed that the event wasn't happening
"The municipal government of Playa del Carmen
informs that no event with that name will be held in our city," the statement said
"After a responsible review of the situation
it was confirmed that there is no registration
planning or conditions that indicate the realization of such an event in the municipality."
"This municipal government is acting with responsibility and commitment
always with the priority placed on public order
We reiterate that any official information will be communicated directly and in a timely manner through the corresponding channels."
McFarland, however, countered on April 4, sharing on the festival's Instagram account a timeline of conversations with the government of Playa Del Carmen and shared what appeared to be screenshots of conversations and permits for the event
"All media reports suggesting our team has not been working with the government of PDC are simply inaccurate and based on misinformation," he wrote on the account
"FYRE has operated as a good partner with PDC government and has followed the proper processes and procedures to lawfully host an event."

The Fyre Festival, a fraudulent luxury music festival held in 2017 that was the subject of documentaries released on Netflix and Hulu, is attempting a second edition on Isla Mujeres in Mexico’s Riviera Maya
local Quintana Roo authorities say they have not authorized the forthcoming festival — which is scheduled to take place in just three months
🔥 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE pic.twitter.com/8gnv6gNPb4
— Billy McFarland (@pyrtbilly) February 24, 2025
“Derived from information circulating in the media about the event ‘Fyre Festival II,’ the General Directorate of Tourism of Isla Mujeres informs that no person or company has requested permits from this office or Municipal Government department for said event,” the city government of Isla Mujeres said in a statement on social media
News of the event’s return spread fast online after its 33-year-old founder — and convicted fraudster — Billy McFarland posted on X on Monday that the festival would take place on Isla Mujeres from May 30 to June 2
McFarland wrote that “Fyre 2 is a three-day escape to the Mexican Caribbean” where attendees will “explore by day” and “come together at night to celebrate with music.”
The press release also promises first-class accommodations thanks to a collaboration with the “Mexican Caribbean’s finest hospitality providers.”
Acknowledging the festival’s spectacular failure in 2017
“I’m sure many people think I’m crazy for doing this again
But I feel I’d be crazy for not doing it again,” he wrote
“The new team and I have amazing plans for Fyre 2
The adventure seekers who trust the vision and take the leap will help make history.”
Tickets for Fyre 2 range from US $1,400 to $1.1 million
and VIP packages including airfare and accommodation for $12,000
was scheduled to take place in April 2017 in the Bahamas
It gained popularity after it was heavily promoted on social media by influencers and celebrities before unfolding in a monumental disaster

When attendees arrived at the still-under-construction venue on the island of Exumas, they were met with major disorganization, flimsy camping tents instead of luxury villas and the now legendary cheese sandwich
which was served to underwhelmed attendees on the first day of the event

Given the chaos of the first Fyre Festival, it may come as no surprise that Fyre Festival 2 is surrounded by controversy
who became famous in 2017 for failing to deliver the extravagant music festival he promised
said in February that Fyre Festival 2 is coming later this year and will be worth the wait
“I’m sure many people think I’m crazy for doing this again,” McFarland said in a press release titled “Fyre Festival 2 is Real.” “But I feel I’d be crazy not to do it again.”
The announcement said the 2025 event is set for Isla Mujeres
But now, McFarland is facing a new wave of questions after the tourism board that controls Isla Mujeres told The Guardian that it has no knowledge of the event
this is an event that does not exist,” Edgar Gasca
from the tourism directorate of Isla Mujeres
It’s been eight years since McFarland’s first disastrous attempt to host a Fyre Festival
The botched event in 2017 led to two documentaries and a prison sentence for McFarland, as the Deseret News previously reported
McFarland refuses to let past failure hold him back
He’s moving forward with Fyre Festival 2 and offering tickets ranging in cost from $1,400 to $1.1 million
Gasca is among those warning people not to trust the new plan
If you go on their website and take the coordinates they provide
it takes you to the ocean — between Cancún and Isla Mujeres," he told The Guardian
But McFarland continues to promote the event and insist that it is really happening
McFarland posted to his personal Instagram on Tuesday
“I figured it would be best to hear directly from me what’s actually happening
we have incredible partners leading the festival
“Fyre 2 is moving forward and we are moving forward with full integrity
Fyre Festival 2 is scheduled to take place from May 30 to June 2
“Refundable ticket options have also been guaranteed should the festival be canceled,” per The Hollywood Reporter
The future of Fyre Festival 2 continues to remain rocky, as Mexican government officials claim the second take of the infamous festival isn't happening, again
In late March, the festival announced it would be held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico from May 30 to June 2, a change from the initially-promoted location of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. After Isla Mujeres government officials claimed they were unaware of such an event
"The municipal government of Playa del Carmen informs that no event of that name will be held in our city," Playa Del Carmen's city hall shared in a social media statement on Wednesday
"After a responsible review of the situation
plans or conditions that indicate the holding of such an event in the municipality."
During a Fyre Festival 2 press conference in Playa del Carmen on March 27
Martina Beach Club Founder Fernando Delgado told local journalists that the festival had secured the necessary permits in the city
Fyre Festival staff nor Playa del Carmen city hall staff immediately responded for comment when contacted by USA TODAY on Friday
In 2018, Billy McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison for engaging in several fraudulent schemes related to the first Fyre Festival
the festival's organizer acknowledged that he had defrauded investors out of $26 million and more than $100,000 in fraudulent ticket-selling schemes
Fyre Festival 2 was promoted to be held on Isla Mujeres
a small island off the western coast of Mexico
about an hour's drive and ferry ride from Cancun
But in February, Isla Mujeres government officials and the management of a five-star hotel that was listed on the festival's website claimed they weren't working with Fyre Festival 2 or even knew about it
McFarland responded by saying that the festival had terminated contracts with two Isla Mujeres hotels
"We have been working on building Fyre in Mexico since September (2024)," McFarland previously told USA TODAY in a statement
"We were blindsided by comments made to the media
and we ultimately found the perfect home for Fyre Festival 2 in Playa del Carmen."
Only 2,000 tickets are available for Fyre Festival 2
ranging between $1,400 for one person to $1.1 million for a group of eight
Lostnights head of artists and commercial relations
said fans could expect a lineup of 40 entertainers to be shared this week
and ticketholders were promised acts like Blink-182 and Migos
festival-goers learned that the artists had canceled
with the promised luxury accommodations and gourmet food nowhere to be found
attendees only stayed one night before they were evacuated
The festival inspired two documentaries, Netflix's "Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened" and Hulu's "Fyre Fraud."

Isla Mujeres is famous for its iconic sunsets
Lapped by clear turquoise water and home to what some consider the best beach in the country – Playa Norte – Isla Mujeres is much more than a day trip from ritzy Cancún
While it is reasonable to explore the island in one day
this isn’t a place teeming with a to-do list of museums and attractions
Staying for at least a weekend will allow you to unwind and soak up the slower-paced island vibe
I’m no stranger to vacationing in Mexican resort towns
but Isla Mujeres lets you live your best island life
watching sunsets at a beach straight out of your dreams
When to arrive: Arrive on Friday around noon to make the most of your first day
(Ferries depart frequently from Cancún.) The season you choose to travel is more important than the day of the week
November to April is considered the dry season – with lower chances of a hurricane and less sargassum floating in the surf
when you're most likely to run into the unsightly and foul-smelling seaweed while swimming.
How to get from the airport: Taxis are the quickest way to get to the ferry terminal from the airport (roughly 30 minutes), but they can be pricey. Instead, pre-book a shuttle service like Cancun Shuttle. The ferry takes about 20 minutes and leaves from Cancún Centro and the Hotel Zone
it’s easy and affordable to get around by taxi (about US$8 to get from one end of the island to another)
rent a golf cart for a fun day of exploration – though driving may cut into your bar-hopping time
a children’s pool and an adults-only pool with a swim-up bar – it’s also pet friendly
What to pack: Mexican beaches are warm year-round
Make sure you’re equipped with your favorite sunscreen and any beauty products you may need
Drop your bags off at your hotel and slide into your swimsuit - I’m sure you’re eager to check out the white, powdery beaches. If you caught an early flight and you're staying in Playa Norte, fuel up with coffee at El Palmar Café.
How to spend the day: Kick things off on the right foot at Playa Norte
Laze on the softest sand or venture into its clear
inviting waters – so shallow that you can walk for hundreds of feet in waist-deep water.
For lunch, take a taxi or hop in your rented golf cart and head south to La Casa del Tikinxic in Playa Lancheros
a beachfront restaurant famous for its pescado Tikin Xic – traditional Maya grilled fish marinated in achiote spice and wrapped in banana leaves
continue south to Punta Sur for beautiful sunset sea views and an opportunity to snap photos of the lighthouse and the sculpture garden
dedicated to the Mayan goddess of love and fertility that gave the island its name (island of women)
Dinner: Enjoy a relaxing dinner with a view at Marbella Fish Market and Raw Bar near Punta Sur
the seafood is priced according to weight and everything is fresh
The grilled octopus is unmissable - charred to perfection and served with a spicy sauce
Morning: If you're staying in Punta Sur, get up early to catch the sunrise – a treat in this part of the island. Start the day with spongy chocolate chip pancakes or French toast brullé at Rancho Capricho, and if you’re staying in the north, head to the lush North Garden for shrimp chilaquiles
Next, book a morning snorkeling or boat tour to explore the fascinating underwater sculptures at Underwater Museum (MUSA)
With more than 500 life-sized sculptures submerged at various depths along the coral reefs
this museum – just a 30-minute boat ride away – is not just a unique art gallery but also designed to promote coral growth and marine life.
How to spend the day: After your underwater adventure, take some time to explore the town center and walk around its colorful streets – make sure you check out the Isla Mujeres Cultural Center for a taste of local history and art.
For lunch, head to Los Tacos de Humo for some of the freshest and crunchiest fish tacos in the Caribbean
They’re served on flour tortillas and topped with pico de gallo (chunky salsa made with finely chopped tomato
spend some time lounging at the hotel pool
Find a cozy stretch of white sand – the closest one to your hotel will do for a much-needed siesta
Dinner: Come dinner time, your appetite is sure to return after the day’s multiple activities. You can’t go wrong at Fuego de Mar; located mid-island
this cozy spot is owned by an Argentinian couple who know how to work a wood fire
Order the grilled sea bass and the provoleta
a traditional Argentine appetizer of grilled provolone cheese
often topped with oregano and olive oil.
After dark: End the night with cocktails at Playa Norte. Zama Beach and Lounge is a stylish spot with beachfront views and creative cocktails, but it closes at 6pm. If you want to keep going until 10pm, opt for Mayan Beach Club Restaurant & Tequileria instead – order one of their famous Mayan-garitas
Morning: Enjoy a relaxed breakfast of huevos rancheros at Rooster before heading south to explore the Garrafón Reef Park. Known for its colorful coral reef, the park offers plenty to do, and you can spend your last hours in Isla Mujeres snorkeling, kayaking or zip-lining.
Keep an eye on the ferry timetable and, if you have time, enjoy the swings that hover above the waves near the terminal for one last hurrah before heading to the ferry.

a Luxury Collection All-Inclusive by Marriott
opened its doors this past November on Isla Mujeres
a certified Pueblo Mágico island located just 20 minutes by boat from Cancun
TMR Canada had the chance to visit this new adults-only resort just a few months after its opening
a private transfer is ready to take you to the Puerto Cancun marina
where a boat brings you straight to Almare’s dock in about 20 minutes
Even though this might sound like “a lot,” it’s incredibly efficient—and less than an hour after landing
The arrival feels straight out of White Lotus
with the team greeting us at the dock with a welcome cocktail and a chilled towel
The service was truly the highlight of the stay—flawless
What makes Almare so appealing is its boutique hotel feel—it only has 109 rooms and suites
all with balconies and ocean views—yet it offers the convenient all-inclusive formula
where dining are lodging options are more limited
The coffee corner—every hotel should have one
Whether you want your coffee by the beach in the morning or a snack in the afternoon
The lobby bar is very elegant and offers mezcal tastings and creative cocktails in the evening
there’s a rooftop Italian restaurant serving pizza and pasta (with a stunning sunset view)
a Mexican restaurant (our personal favorite) open all day
There’s also a beachfront food truck with healthy options like smoothies
chances are you’re looking for peace and quiet
and everyone gets around by golf cart—a charming detail we really loved
The resort is just far enough from the “town center” to offer complete tranquility
You can tour the island in about 30 minutes
and Almare is ideally located in the center
making it easy to catch both sunrise at Punta Sur (the island’s southern tip) and sunset at Playa Norte (as the name suggests
Isla Mujeres holds the title of Pueblo Mágico
a distinction granted by the Mexican government to towns that have preserved their traditional charm and character
It is therefore very pleasant to walk around the town center
Almare fits right in with this setting—peaceful
embrace the “island life,” and disconnect for a few days—worlds away from Cancun’s energy
The resort offers a state-of-the-art fitness center
a spa with a hydrotherapy circuit (complimentary for Marriott Bonvoy members)
a solid menu of facial and massage treatments (we had a fantastic massage worth mentioning!)
There’s a small rooftop pool perfect for taking in the view and sunsets
with plenty of cabanas and loungers—and top-notch service at all times
Considering the accommodation options on Isla Mujeres
Almare is a great choice if you’re looking for the convenience of all-inclusive with the atmosphere of a boutique hotel
Multiple reports are circulating that Sandals Resorts is in talks to sell the company

There are currently 9,000 hotel rooms in the municipality

The news comes just a week after founder Billy McFarland was quoted as saying the festival was confirmed
Fyre Festival 2 “does not exist” according to an official statement from the tourist board in Mexico, despite founder Billy McFarland insisting otherwise
Tickets to the second edition of Fyre Festival went on sale this week with the only confirmed detail being the location: Isla Mujeres
McFarland said Fyre Festival 2 is due to take place from 30th May-2nd June
with ticket prices ranging from $1,400 to $25,000
Premium packages are being priced as high as $1.1 million
According to the announcement on Fyre Festival’s official Instagram, the event is to be produced by Mexican events company Lostnights
boutique and sustainable experience for FYRE Festival 2
“Fyre Festival 2 has secured top-tier private venues and hotels in partnership with our local allies who have established communications with the corresponding authorities to ensure full compliance and flawless execution.”
the tourist board and local officials have since released a statement that should alarm anyone who has bought a ticket
Speaking to the Guardian
nor contact with any person or company about it
Colombia for a tourism fair when he heard the news
He added that he had spoken to the minister for tourism in the state of Quintana Roo as well as the hotels listed as official accommodation on the Fyre website
None had been approached by Fyre about the festival
confirmed that the only information she had was what had been written online
“People are trying to use the peace and tranquillity we have created here for their own benefit,” she said
“The organisers didn’t even bother to approach the authorities,” Gasca added
because any manager knows that if you’re going to hold an event
“I think they thought they would just announce it and see if it got traction
then ask for the permits halfway down the path
it takes you to the ocean — between Cancún and Isla Mujeres.”
The first edition of Fyre Festival in 2017 was mired in disaster and controversy as music acts cancelled
and guests were greeted with inadequate accommodation and a lack of organisation

The food competes with the views at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets
Despite being a boutique-sized hotel with just 125 rooms
Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets has seven à la carte restaurants in addition to five bars plus 24-hour in-room dining
as this food is so delicious you’ll regret dawdling
The resort has not one but two signature restaurants
Spezia features Italian cuisine from Tuscan master chef Paolo Parlanti while UNIK The Kitchen offers tapas and shareables (guests rave about the ceviche) plus drinks around the rooftop glass-walled pool overlooking the sea
Wildfire Grill is a steakhouse also offering seared tuna
Mercado is poolside for lunchtime Mexican specialties and wood-fired pizza
Cacao is a café and French patisserie open 24 hours
La Vista is for both breakfast and lunch (though it’s pretty hard to compete with in-room breakfast
especially when it can be delivered directly to your room via the Secret Box)

Your first impression of the resort’s five bars will be at The Yacht Welcome Lounge—you’ll arrive here on the resort’s catamaran from Cancun and can make your first toast to your good taste in choosing this hotel
Isola is the sophisticated lobby bar and the main pool’s swim-up bar is called Sharks
The terrace bar at The Temple is ideal for sunset while The Top is the rooftop sports bar

But those in the know will also want to book a session in the spa’s hydrotherapy circuit
Though Impression Pure Spa is a feast for the eyes and all your other senses
leave your phone in your room so you can focus on relaxation and rejuvenation rather than reels
it’s just a 15-20 minute taxi ride to Playa Norte and the Centro district
You can rent a golf cart or the resort hosts a bike tour if you want to explore Isla Mujeres further
You’ll need to travel far to get pics at almost all the others though—most are in the Maldives

Tourism and local officials in Mexico deny any knowledge of proposed follow-up to disastrous 2017 event
When tickets to the second Fyre festival went on sale this week, there was just one concrete detail: it would take place on Isla Mujeres, a tropical island off Cancún, Mexico.
But the festival seems to be repeating its own history as an improvised disaster after the local government in Isla Mujeres denied knowing anything about it.

nor contact with any person or company about it,” Edgar Gasca
Its founder, Billy McFarland, described by Vanity Fair as “the poster boy for millennial scamming”
was convicted of fraud and sentenced to six years in prison
He was later released after less than four years
A New York court also awarded $7,220 each to 277 attendees
But earlier this week McFarland appeared on TV to announce a kind of comeback
“Fyre 2 is real,” McFarland told the Today show

Fyre was selling tickets for between $1,400 and $1.1m
soon-to-be-confirmed headline acts and priceless experiences that could include diving with whale sharks
McFarland said that people who bought tickets knew they were “taking the risk”
apparently spinning the festival’s notoriety as a selling point
McFarland himself was not handling the details this time
with partners taking over the festival’s management
He said the festival “really isn’t about the past
with other officials from Isla Mujeres when they were blindsided by the Fyre festival announcement
Gasca said he had spoken with the minister for tourism in the state of Quintana Roo and also the hotels that Fyre listed as accommodation for guests on its website
and that none of them had heard about the festival
one of the luxury hotels at which Fyre promised accommodation
told the Guardian it had not received “any approach or enquiry with regards to the event” and that they were investigating it
said she knew nothing more about the festival than what was online
“People are trying to use the peace and tranquillity we have created here for their own benefit,” she added
“The organisers didn’t even bother to approach the authorities,” said Gasca
then ask for the permits halfway down the path,” Gasca added
Given all the media attention the event was receiving, the local government put out a public denial
saying that no permit had been requested for the event

Photograph: NetflixThe organisers of Fyre have since sent a statement to the Guardian
claiming to be in contact with local authorities and asserting that the festival will go ahead
The organisers did not respond to follow-up questions
“This festival is not going to happen,” said Gasca
“If you go on their website and take the coordinates they provide
it takes you to the ocean – between Cancún and Isla Mujeres,” Gasca added

as it offers a wide range of complimentary fitness classes
ranging from yoga and pilates to weight training
as well as the unique Rafa Nadal Tennis Center
which features eight tennis courts as well as coaching using Nadal’s very own techniques

The Forbes Vetted travel team has researched, written and published dozens of hotel guides featuring cities across the globe
My name is Astrid Taran and I’m the senior travel editor at Forbes Vetted
I have covered travel for almost a full decade as both a writer and editor
Along with extensively writing about hotels and airlines
I have also written multiple destination guides as well as long-form features on luxury travel
I have visited Cancun numerous times thanks to its great beaches and convenient location just a short flight from my home base of New York City
and I have stayed at several properties on this list
We selected the top contenders based on personal stays as well as extensive research
there’s no shortage of all-inclusive resorts to choose from
The following properties have recently opened in 2024 and early 2025; while we haven’t tried all of them out ourselves yet
they are worth considering if you’re looking for additional resort options
Many all-inclusive resorts in Cancun offer similar base amenities including unlimited food and drink
each property provides a unique experience
Here’s what to consider as you’re perusing your options
A majority of resorts are located in the Hotel Zone
which stretches nearly 14 miles along the Caribbean coastline
While the Hotel Zone offers unmatched convenience
it’s also the most popular spot for tourists
Playa Mujeres is a short drive in the northern part of Cancun
The number of people you’re traveling with should also factor into your decision
If you’re going on a romantic getaway with a significant other
adults-only resort will likely fit the bill
consider a larger resort with plenty of dining options and areas catered to both adults and children
Some travelers prioritize relaxation while on vacation
choosing to spend a majority of their time lounging at the beach or pool
Others look forward to exhilarating water sports
Spend some time researching the activity options each resort offers to find a spot that caters to your party’s interests and activity level
you’re able to see exactly how much you’ll be spending up front
some resorts offer add-on experiences—everything from spa treatments to off-site excursions—for an additional cost
Make sure to review everything that’s included in the all-inclusive rate so you can budget for add-ons if you wish
While Cancun is mostly a year-round destination
the best month to visit Cancun is the shoulder season: mid-October and November
The rainy season will have just ended and the humidity has lessened
Average daily temperatures are 84 degrees Fahrenheit
The crowds have not started arriving for the holiday season
but will certainly be more crowded (especially during traditional spring break.)
an all-inclusive resort can definitely be worth it
mainly because it helps remove the stress from planning a vacation
You know exactly how much you’re paying upfront
beach access and entertainment built into the all-inclusive price
which means you can spend less time tallying up each individual expense and more time unplugging and relaxing
if you’re the type of traveler who likes to branch out and explore while on vacation
it may not be worth it to pay for an all-inclusive resort
Each Cancun resort differs slightly in what it offers in its all-inclusive price
you can expect that price to cover the rate of your room
Some resorts go above and beyond by offering additional activities at no extra cost
spa treatments and offsite excursions can be added onto your package for an additional fee
but if you want to leave something extra for outstanding service
but it’s a hassle for employees to exchange it for the local currency

The 27.3-metre Maiora motor yacht Dominic has been destroyed in a fire off the island of Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo
Dramatic imagery shows Dominic's three decks entirely engulfed in flames as personnel from the Naval Search
Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station attempt to battle the blaze
the fire began in the late evening (26 July) with six guests and two crew on board at the time
though it is said to have started from the lower deck
"Thanks to the quick intervention of the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR)
staff of the Isla Mujeres municipality and the solidarity of the citizens
all those involved were evacuated without suffering injuries," read a statement from the State Coordination of Civil Protection for Quintana Roo
It was also confirmed that there was no resulting pollutants
Dominic was delivered by Italian shipyard Maiora in 2008 to an exterior design by Roberto Del Re
Accommodation is for up to eight guests and four crew
Key numbers include a 6.3-metre beam and a volume of 152GT
This follows another dramatic incident this weekend, which saw the 37.8-metre motor yacht Lovebug run aground in Chesapeake Bay. A salvage plan is actively underway.

Eager to join me for lunch on the beachfront terrace at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres’ Seaside Grill
a spiny-tailed iguana slowly made its way toward my impeccably set table
a server swiftly stepped into the local creature’s path
directing it away from the guests nibbling on grilled octopus
Super-attentive staff members seem to pop up everywhere at the newest adults-only all-inclusive resort from The Inclusive Collection, part of World of Hyatt
meandering pathways leading from the 507 suites past several jungle-wrapped pools to the beach
the almost-too-discreet signage meant I got lost often during my recent four-night stay
Each time I asked someone where the infinity pool was or which staircase I should take to grab a gourmet coffee at Coco Cafe
a staff member would insist on accompanying me there
Pampering guests in a luxurious setting designed for ultimate relaxation is top of mind here
Located 12 miles north of Cancun along the expansive Costa Mujeres shoreline
this Secrets resort dazzles the moment guests arrive in the open-air lobby
Perched at the highest point of the property
this breezy space was designed so guests can enjoy sunrises bursting over the Caribbean Sea and spectacular sunsets over the lagoon
My ocean-front corner junior suite — one of 14 guestroom categories — was furnished in the same neutral hues as the rest of the resort
with handmade furniture crafted from locally sourced Parota wood
known for its durability in tropical climates
Smooth stone floors and woven accents added casual elegance
Slatted sliding wood doors revealed a massive bathroom with a two-person soaking tub
a separate shower and a double vanity stocked with Pharmacopia products and handy amenities
daily replenishment of snacks and cold drinks and having a dedicated concierge for my building
And while the Wi-Fi can be spotty — especially at the beach — it’s further incentive to unplug and soak up the coastal serenity
which serves as a barrier against the piles of seaweed found at many Cancun resorts
I was also struck by the majesty of three large ceiba trees growing on the property
this divine tree’s roots are connected to the underworld
With nine no-reservations-required eateries dotted throughout the property — including six a la carte restaurants
the 24-hour Coco Cafe and the poolside Barefoot Grill — guests can indulge any craving
from sushi to upscale French dishes and authentic Mexican delights
I savored crispy squid and coconut shrimp at Oceana
short ribs and homemade ice cream at Seaside Grill
fresh smoothies and made-to-order omelets at Market Cafe and a decadent
Sharing the same owner and designer as Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya and Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun
I was impressed by the stunning decorative elements crafted by Yucatan artisans
including several hand-painted tile murals by Mexican artist Carla Guajardo that infuse tropical whimsy into the Market Cafe
This last spot is the only one requiring reservations for its four teppanyaki tables
which can be booked through the resort app
Secrets Playa Blanca also offers memorable culinary experiences in private rooms
wine-and-food pairings in Portofino’s cellar — which has an extensive selection
including one $11,000 bottle — or tequila tasting at El Patio
including one in a sunken conversation area surrounded by water
provide congenial gathering spots once the sun sets
And with more than 9,000 square feet of event space
the resort is ideal for destination weddings and incentive trips
The Secrets app updates with activities ranging from mixology classes
beach volleyball and sunrise yoga to kayaking
The bustling social pool offers non-stop entertainment
multiple small pools are tucked among the jungle-like landscape
There’s plenty of space around the oceanfront infinity pool and its swim-up bar
a wooden boardwalk leads straight to the beach
where loungers and palapa umbrellas are set up
For clients seeking more privacy, 10 small, dedicated pools for guests staying in ground-floor swim-out suites offer a quick dip. Rooms on higher floors include balcony soaker tubs. Guests in the 221 Preferred suites have their own beach bar
infinity pool and indoor lounge — where I nibbled tasty appetizers
I also loved the hydrotherapy circuit at the Secrets Spa — attendants accompany you from the dry sauna or steam room when it’s time for a plunge in the cold pool or to wander through the hot-and-cold reflexology foot baths
A series of jets in adjoining pools provided soothing massage
it’s a short drive to a championship golf course
several historical attractions or Isla Contoy National Park
which houses one of Mexico’s largest wildlife sanctuaries
Guests can also take a ferry to Isla Mujeres for shopping and snorkeling
But with such an array of options right on property
I was happy to stay put at this swanky resort
At the invitation of Hyatt Inclusive Collection
Open Jaw recently had the opportunity to stay at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets
a new ultra-luxury boutique hotel part of the Secrets portfolio
The property stands out with its even more personalized and "high-end" experience
During our stay at this adults-only 'hidden paradise,' described as the 'most Instagrammable hotel in the world' by Luxury Travel Advisor magazine
we discovered a haven of luxury and exclusivity
where almost every moment evokes the landscapes of the Maldives or Santorini in Greece
Welcome to this luxury and romantic destination
where every corner becomes an idyllic setting for taking "Instagram photos"
the "most exclusive hotel on Isla Mujeres" stands out with the hassle-free experience it offers to its guests
Upon arrival at the Hacienda del Mar marina for the private catamaran transfer
we are greeted by a butler who takes care of our luggage
delivering it "directly to our suite." Then
we are presented with a menu of food and drinks while we settle into an exclusive lounge with an ocean view
they take care of the whole check-in process
The result is that we can relax without having to go through a traditional reception upon arrival
"The main idea for us is to take care of all the check-in formalities while you wait for the boat
your vacation begins," shared Mourad Essafi
guests can focus on one of the most important parts of their stay: the (absolutely stunning) arrival on the island by catamaran
Impression Isla Mujeres is one of the only two resorts on the island offering private transfers
Guests of other properties must take a public ferry to Isla Mujeres
are escorted to their suite by their butler
where their luggage is already waiting for them
whether they wish to order a meal at one of the five gourmet restaurants
enjoy a bottle of wine in their suite's hot tub
or go diving to explore the "second-largest coral reef in the world."
Each suite comes with a dedicated team of butlers available 24/7 to cater to guests’ needs
"The concept behind Impression was born from the desire to blend personalized luxury
and high-end service within an all-inclusive setting," summarized Mourad Essafi during the on-site interview
The hotel boasts 125 elegant and spacious suites in neutral tones
almost all offering breathtaking sea views
The property's luxurious feel is reflected both in the décor
inspired by natural elements like the ocean and bamboo
create an immersive and relaxing experience
The blue and white tones in the furniture and décor give the property a paradise-like ambiance
you feel like you're in Mexico while being transported elsewhere – exactly the sensation the hotel aims to create
you feel like you’ve arrived at a Maldivian destination," explains Essafi
and you would never imagine being so close to the Cancun area
I think this is one of the most important points: in the Caribbean
you have such a unique destination with a great sense of arrival
the cliffside hotel offers six suite categories
Each suite category offers the same "endless privileges," including:
the hotel does not consider itself a traditional all-inclusive but rather a "hotel with endless privileges."
"When you are looking at the endless privileges we offer
you will find that this resort is very unique in terms of specific attributes
like every single restaurant is ocean front," explains Mourad Essafi
the hydrotherapy and the spa are ocean front
And that’s why I believe we are the most 'Instagrammable' resort in the world today
The hotel offers four 'Instagrammable views' to guests
every shot is worth sharing on social media
"Impression is part of a new concept in which the benefits go far beyond traditional all-inclusives," says Mourad Essafi
"One of the unique features is that in each of our restaurants
you'll find wines that specifically complement the menu
Most resorts offer four wine étiquettes (labels)
and anything beyond that has an extra cost
we offer a total of 17 different wine étiquettes included."
We also have a wine cellar in the room with three bottles
This is also included at no additional cost."
The hotel’s clientele mainly consists of couples seeking luxury
Interesting to note: several couples don't hesitate to make the 15-hour flight from South Korea to be able to indulge in this gastronomic paradise
"Our guests are primarily travellers seeking specific 'boutique' destinations
They are looking for experiences different from those offered at properties like Secrets or Dreams
Additional Selling Points: The hotel houses the largest spa on Isla Mujeres (with ocean view)
It is located on a beach without sargassum and does not impose check-in and check-out times to clients
which is convenient for catamaran arrivals and departures

Fyre Festival 2 “does not exist” according to an official statement from the tourist board in Mexico
despite the event claiming it is “real” on social media
However, the tourist board and local officials have since claimed that no festival exists. Speaking to The Guardian, Edgar Gasca, from the tourism directorate of Isla Mujeres, said, “We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist.”
Gasca was in Bogotá, Colombia for a tourism fair when he heard the news. He confirmed he had spoken to the minister for tourism in the state of Quintana Roo and the hotels listed as part of Fyre Festival 2, and none had been approached by the event.
The Guardian reached out to Impression Isla Mujeres, one of the luxury hotels at which Fyre promised accommodation, which claimed it had not received “any approach or enquiry with regards to the event” and that it was investigating it.
“The organisers didn’t even bother to approach the authorities,” said Gasca. “It’s very strange, because any manager knows that if you’re going to hold an event, let alone a massive event, you need municipal authorisation.
“I think they thought they would just announce it and see if it got traction, then ask for the permits halfway down the path,” Gasca added. “It’s a bit of a naive way to think.”
Last week, the festival took to social media to announce its return and described itself as “real” in a lengthy post.
It billed itself as a “three-day escape to the Mexican Caribbean where you’ll explore by day alongside your favourite talent and come together at night to celebrate with music”. Fyre Festival 2 also claims that it will feature “adventures led by international and local talent, taking guests on boundary-pushing excursions by day and uniting for intimate beach-side performances at night”.
A post shared by FYRE FESTIVAL (@fyrefestival)
As for the musical acts set to play at the alleged Fyre Festival 2, no talent has been announced yet. The original Fyre Festival in 2017 was reportedly set to include performances from Blink-182, Major Lazer, Disclosure, Migos, Pusha T, Tyga and more
