LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In the split second of silence between the last horse loading into the gates on the first Saturday of May and Churchill Downs track announcer Travis Stone yelling
“They’re off,” Scott Jordan stands atop a small metal perch on the track’s inside rail
20 jockeys sit astride 20 adrenaline-fueled thoroughbreds squished into a space that barely contains their girth
all waiting to break for a mad dash toward history
160,000 people dressed in seersucker suits
joining millions more doing the same from their living rooms and Kentucky Derby parties across the country
the same sort of innocuous mechanism a Jeopardy contestant might use to buzz in
When Jordan decides it is time, and only when Jordan decides, he presses the button to drop the gates and start the Kentucky Derby.
Horse trainer Al Stall stands atop a wall of pavers just outside the rail near the third turn of the track
A few furlongs and what might as well be a world away
people stream around on the backside by the hundreds
Out-of-towners trail tour guides through the barns
many dressed in their Catholic school uniforms
primed for a quick dash to beat the first bell after watching the Derby horses train
a small collection of workers and an ever-rotating line of horses quietly walking about — that some of the most important bits of the horse-racing business get done
and in this small patch of dirt that serves as his weekday office
Starting a race is much more than pushing that button
Packing a 1,000-pound animal itching to race into a metal pen and asking it to wait for its release is as unnatural as it sounds
That’s why during the days leading up to the Derby
every one of the entrants will frequent the six-horse starting gate tucked into the quarter chute just off the Churchill track to “school.” “Schooling” is a horse term for exactly what it sounds like — teaching the animals how to start correctly and safely
“We’ve got that filly who wouldn’t load the other day coming,” Stall yells to Jordan
the still unnamed horse and rider approach
She is still not terribly interested in wedging herself into the gate
She turns sideways and stubbornly refuses to budge for the attendant trying to lead her in
Jordan grabs her lead and starts coaxing her in
It takes more than a few tries to determine the victor in this equine-versus-man battle
the filly settled into the gate where she stands for a handful of minutes to get used to her new surroundings
The misleadingly simple and incredibly important work is completed
referring to the six-time Derby winner and winningest trainer in Churchill history
The game’s hard enough without messing up the start of the race.”
He grew too tall and instead settled for galloping horses at Beulah Park in Columbus
The head starter there asked him if he wanted to help out working the gate in the afternoon
a simple decision grew into a full-on pivot
and he wound up bouncing from Beulah to Belterra Park in Cincinnati and Turfway in Florence
People at Turfway knew a guy or two at Churchill
Jordan relocated to the famed Louisville track to man the gate
which meant that along with the countless other races there
he was put in charge of starting the single most famous event in horse racing
He appreciated the enormity of the gig and leaned on the late John Asher
the beloved vice president of communications
Jordan knew horses well and understood that part of the job
He’d bring Jordan along when he spoke to owners and trainers
helping his new starter to forge the sort of trusting relationships necessary to do his job well
and it’s really difficult,” Baffert said of Jordan
Horses aren’t unaccustomed to starting gates
but Derby horses are only 3 years old; many have only raced a handful of times
the clang of the metal doors closing and the nearness of their neighbors can be unsettling
In the ninth race at Churchill Downs on Thursday
Alvarado is fine (Caramel Chip went on to finish second
though a jockey-less rider is automatically disqualified)
but it showed how one bad step can easily be the difference between history and disaster
Jordan looks out for quirks and tendencies
A fidgety horse not only is a risk for itself and its rider; it can affect all of the horses waiting to start
Jordan spent extra time with Sierra Leone after the horse delayed the start for several minutes in the Blue Grass Stakes
Sierra Leone broke well and wound up finishing second
What a shame.’ It’s just two minutes of agony and you’re like
a Baffert 3-year-old positioned for Saturday’s Pat Day Mile came to school with assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes on hand to watch
Madaket Road has only raced five times and not since early March
The horse fought loading for a good few minutes while Jordan calmly shared instructions with one of his staff
telling him not to guide the horse but to let him turn himself around
combining the tough love of a few shoves to the horse’s hindquarters to get him straight with some soothing conversation
aren’t you?” he said as he got Madaket Road square
radioing the horse’s progress back to Barn 33
“He’s slowly learning,” Barnes said with a smile
Madaket Road and his rider sauntered off with Barnes
“Thank you guys,” Barnes called over his shoulder
The real challenge for the Derby is its scope
a potential 20-horse field is uncommonly big and in 2020
Churchill created a new starting gate to house them
The gate stretches 65 feet and while the interior of the stalls is an inch-and-a-half wider than the typical gate
Jordan doubles the size of his staff for the Derby
stationing an extra two bodies as rovers to be on call if something goes wrong
Jordan will call for help if he thinks a horse needs soothing
pick up his tail and see how he does,’” Jordan said
is the one thing Jordan cannot school the animals on — the 160,000 people who rise to their feet when the horses begin to load
It is unlike any race the horses have run in
It also adds to the enormity of the job with which Jordan is tasked
“You try to play it like it’s just another race,” Jordan said
and you’ve got 160,000 people in the stands and millions of people watching
The Kentucky Derby is giving folks a live look at the assembly of the Garland of Roses to be draped over the 2025 winner
The Kentucky Derby Facebook page is livestreaming the construction to a backdrop of music and the display of Derby facts and trivia
The Rose Garland is being crafted at the Kroger in Middletown
They’re spending about 80 hours putting the greenery together
and will spend another eight hours on Oaks Day sewing in the roses
the Rose Garland will be displayed at the store until a police escort carries it to Churchill Downs
The garland will be on display in the paddock on Derby Day before it’s taken to the Winner’s Circle

The Official Guide to Portland
In Portland, there is no surer sign that spring is here and summer is quickly approaching than colorful rose blooms across the city. And while you’ll find gardens on quiet side streets and in pastoral parks alike, there is no grander display than the International Rose Test Garden (or the Portland Rose Garden
Roughly a century after the first flower was planted, the garden remains the oldest testing ground for new rose varieties in the country and is home to over 10,000 rose bushes representing more than 600 varieties.

2025Save this storySaveSave this storySaveOlivia Colman has a friend who’s going through a horrible divorce
“She has a little victory every day by putting wee in her husband’s tea,” she tells Vanity Fair
It sounds like a detail out of the Oscar winner’s new film The Roses
a reimaging of the 1989 comedy directed by Danny DeVito
The original film starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a wealthy couple whose seemingly perfect marriage falls apart
leading to an increasingly outrageous divorce battle
“I love that you can see the journey of two people who adore each other and slowly
bit by bit start to try and tear each other apart,” Colman says
very emotionally available and a real friend," says Cumberbatch of working with Colman for the first time
Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star as a couple living on the California coast
they begin to wreak havoc on each other in increasingly chaotic ways
which Searchlight will release in theaters August 29
showcases two powerhouse actors joyously diving into smart
The central theme from the 1989 film—how a loving couple’s marriage can so intensely fall apart—remains intact while Colman and Cumberbatch introduce a more modern dynamic
“The film is a parable of two people who loved each other intensely
then ended up hating each other intensely and missing the middle ground,” Cumberbatch says
“Much of it is shockingly recognizable: how we struggle to show love toward the people we love the most
and how this can all go wrong very quickly if we're not careful about nurturing and nourishing the relationships at the center of our families.”
Colman (pictured with Sunita Mari and Ncuti Gatwa) plays Ivy
The War of the Roses was both a critical hit and box-office smash
It was the 13th highest grossing film of 1989; it also earned three Golden Globes nominations
both signed on with their production companies early
eager to develop a new take on the story with Searchlight
“All art influences other art,” Colman says
“It’s very hard to find any story that hasn’t had beginnings in another story a year before or a thousand years before
a chef whose career begins to eclipse that of her husband Theo
What at first comes off as witty banter between two British expats living in California soon transforms into sharp barbs and physical one-upmanship as their competitive natures get the best of them
Cumberbatch's Theo is struggling after he loses his job
who previously worked with Colman on The Favourite
He agreed to write the script for The Roses
using the original and the book it’s based on—Warren Adler’s 1981 novel of the same name—as a jumping-off point
Why don’t we make a movie that’s more focused on what we do to each other while we’re married
and still sort of pay homage to the original?” he says
who also wrote the script for 2023’s Poor Things and created the Hulu comedy series The Great
“What Tony does so well is the element of comedy
That’s really the key—the painfully acute observation of relationships,” Cumberbatch says
“What he really pins in this film is the emotional depth of the characters and the recognizability of their dynamics.”
The Roses traces the couple’s relationship over 20 years
It also changes the power dynamic from the original film
which centered on Douglas’s character as the family’s breadwinner
it’s Ivy’s career that is taking off and Theo who loses his job
“That’s what so many couples understand now
how the balance between two careers is such a trick to solve in a marriage,” McNamara says
very ambitious—how are they going to balance staying married and staying in love?”
which allowed him to strike the right balance for this story
“There’s a reality to it and a groundedness to it and a very relatable predicament that I think this couple gets caught up in,” Roach says
“I just wanted to make sure it had that nice balance
and that we actually want to care about these people.”
Colman and Cumberbatch had never worked together on a film before
we’ve managed to stay friends even though we’ve now done our first job together,” Colman jokes
“That’s the fear: that you like each other
and what if you don’t get on when you’re actually on set
Allison Janney plays an attorney in The Roses
Colman admits that they maybe “mucked about too much
Poor Jay was probably saying ‘It’s like herding cats!’” But Roach disagrees
saying that he felt the actors had an easy rapport from the beginning of the 40-day
“There is a little bit of a joyful keeping the ball in the air,” he says
when they trust each other so much that they’re willing to go a little off the script or a little into dangerous territory
I feel the audience senses that high-wire act a little bit.”
While both actors are known for dramatic work (Cumberbatch was nominated for an Oscar for 2014’s The Imitation Game and 2021’s The Power of the Dog
while Colman was nominated for 2020’s The Father and 2021’s The Lost Daughter)
they’ve both also showcased their playfulness and strong comedic timing
Colman started out on the sitcom Peep Show
and won an Oscar for her work in the dark comedy The Favourite
Cumberbatch has often played his characters with a delightful
both actors get to embrace bold comedy and bring forth the sense of mischief that’s been central to much of their past work
“Olivia is as good on the first take as she would be on the 40th,” Cumberbatch says
“She’s great at taking direction and is such an acute instrument of joy and drama
as well as an immediate human mood enhancer
She has a lot of vulnerability for someone who’s the funniest person in the room.”
Kate McKinnon plays a friend of the couple who has an eye on Cumberbatch's Theo
The film also features a strong lineup of talented comedic actors in supporting roles
“I was working with such a fine company of comedy masters
so watching them improvise inspired me to do a little bit of my own as well,” Cumberbatch says
“The supportive nature of this group was incredible.”
and Roach all agree that viewers don’t have to be familiar with the 1989 classic to enjoy their new take
and the illusion and the miracle of love is what sometimes gets us through,” Roach says
And one enjoyable way to acknowledge that is through humor.”

Who’s your Kentucky Derby horse
With that in mind, The Courier Journal offers its annual breakdown of why each horse can and can’t win the Kentucky Derby — many serious
which hasn’t produced a Derby winner since Ferdinand in 1986
The last 2-year-old champ to win the Derby was Nyquist (2016)
2. NeoequosWhy he can win: Never worse than third in his last six starts
this horse always is in the mix and figures to be near the lead early
Why he can’t win: Every horse in the field has to answer the mile-and-a-quarter question
but this one seems the least likely to want to go this far
Why he can win: Took a big step forward in winning the Jeff Ruby Steaks at 15-1 odds
Why he can’t win: The “wise-guy” horse never wins
Why he can win: Improving colt dominated the Virginia Derby
Wayne Lukas showed he still can win on the Triple Crown trail after Seize The Grey took last year’s Preakness
Why he can’t win: The seven-week layoff between the Virginia Derby and the Kentucky Derby is concerning
as is the horse’s 0-1-0 record in three starts at Churchill Downs
Why he can win: Showed some toughness in holding off Heart of Honor to win the UAE Derby and did so at a distance (1 3/16 miles) many of his foes haven’t yet tried
Why he can’t win: Seems the lesser of the two choices coming from Japan
Why he can win: He’s won four straight races and has a Triple Crown winner — sire American Pharoah — in his blood
which seems destined to win this race sooner than later
Why he can’t win: Forever Young was perhaps the best horse ever from Japan to compete in the Kentucky Derby and finished third last year
Luxor Cafe doesn’t appear to be on his level
Why he can win: Because he’s the best horse in the field with not just the fastest Beyer Speed Figure (108) but also the second fastest (102)
Showed toughness by overcoming some trouble to win the Santa Anita Derby
Why he can’t win: As anyone in the newspaper business will tell you
“Journalism wins!” feels like the unlikeliest of headlines
Why he can win: His Beyer Speed Figures have improved with every race of his career
Why he can’t win: Of the last 71 geldings to run in the Derby
only two have won — Funny Cide (2003) and Mine That Bird (2009)
The “unkindest cut of all” has consequences
11. Flying MohawkWhy he can win: Because you believe in miracles
Why he can’t win: His lifetime best Beyer Speed Figure (84) is the slowest in the field, and he’s never raced on dirt
Why he can win: Maybe his runner-up finish in the Blue Grass Stakes was a return to the form that made him one of the nation’s top 2-year-olds last year
Why he can’t win: Had every chance to win the Blue Grass and couldn’t hold off Burnham Square
13. PublisherWhy he can win: Seems to be training well over the Churchill Downs surface and adds one of the world’s top jockeys in Irad Ortiz Jr
Trainer Steve Asmussen says the laid-back Publisher will be “the easiest horse we’ve ever saddled in the Derby.”
Only three maidens have won the Kentucky Derby
Why he can win: Seems to be improving after running the best race of his career to win the Louisiana Derby by 2 ¼ lengths over Chunk of Gold
could he get first run at the front-runners
Why he can’t win: No trainer has entered more horses without winning the Kentucky Derby than Asmussen (0 for 26)
Perhaps this one’s just not meant to be for the Hall of Famer
15. Render JudgmentWhy he can win: The only victory of his career came at Churchill Downs last October
Why he can’t win: Trainer Kenny McPeek didn’t want to run this colt in the Kentucky Derby but was overruled by his owners
Why he can win: Perhaps the most versatile colt in the field
he’s won at four different tracks and done so with varying styles
Why he can’t win: Seemed to take a step back when finishing third in the Arkansas Derby. Horse racing could use a story like 72-year-old trainer Lonnie Briley winning the Kentucky Derby
but the sport recently hasn’t been that lucky
17. SandmanWhy he can win: He’s always coming late
which could be the perfect scenario in a race that always has plenty of speed
With the Metallica angle to his name and his striking gray coat
Why he can’t win: His three races at Churchill Downs were the three slowest of his career
2 betting choice in the morning line (5-1) and is a major threat
His backers love the way he was charging at the end of the Florida Derby and figure the longer stretch at Churchill Downs will be a benefit
Why he can’t win: Trainer Bill Mott hasn’t had much luck in this race
his only win coming via disqualification with Country House in 2019
19. Chunk of GoldWhy he can win: Never worse than second in four career starts and could be ready to take another step forward
Why he can’t win: This $2,500 purchase has already exceeded expectations
Why he can win: Throw out the sixth-place finish in the Blue Grass and he’s never finished worse than second
Seems to like it at Churchill Downs with a win and a second in two starts
Why he can’t win: Son of Speightstown likely wants no part of the 1 ¼-mile distance
21. BaezaWhy he can win: Lost to Journalism by less than a length in the Santa Anita Derby and figures to improve off that finish
Why he can’t win: Late bloomer was foaled on May 13
Probably won’t be at his best until the summer
Jason Frakes: 502-582-4046; jfrakes@courier-journal.com
The first Saturday in May is reserved for me to enter a world of majestic horses
I look at the odds of winning on the morning line
which is the ratio of the perceived chances of winning based on a $1 bet
I carefully watch when the call for “riders up” sounds
I particularly note the spirit of individual horses and how they respond to crowd noises
At long last comes the post parade, when horses go from the paddock to the starting gate past the stands, and the playing of “My Old Kentucky Home.” The pageantry always thrills me: Men dress up in suits
the crowd hushes as the starting gates open and the race begins
Usually, the oddsmakers get it right and the favorite wins. But every now and then, a long shot emerges victorious. Such was the case with a horse named Donerail in 1913
That was very good money at the time for a two-minute run in a mile-and-a-half race
We CAD patients need to rest more than other people. We’re always fatigued, and we suffer from aches and pains that come and go with no apparent rhyme or reason
We cannot maintain continuous activity and need lots of breaks throughout the day
Racehorses are notoriously high-strung and need to be coddled. Some trainers purchase goats to accompany fidgety horses in their stalls
Woe to the trainer if someone has “gotten their goat.”
Likewise, weather and track conditions are additional factors to consider. Horses must adapt to fast, sloppy, or muddy tracks. Some horses are even known as “mudders” when they run well on a muddy track
Wise jockeys wear several sets of goggles so they can sling off one when it becomes muddy
they can continue racing with clear vision
Because I have CAD, I always check weather and wind conditions. A recent 30-second exposure to blustery winter conditions, for example, caused a return of hemolysis
I’m definitely not known as a “snow bunny,” but rather more of a “sun worshipper.”
Good owners and trainers take care to ensure proper health and nutrition to keep their horses in top form
They make sure their racers are surrounded by a calm environment to reduce stress
I live in such a manner to keep my stress levels as low as possible so that I can operate at optimal performance levels
Finally, I have regular checkups with my hematologist. My blood is checked regularly to monitor hemoglobin and blood levels. That provides a slew of information showing my progress in the race to score a victory over CAD. My doctor then decides on treatment based on this information
One of the most exciting races was last year’s Kentucky Derby
The field of 20 was fairly packed as they rounded the final turn
But one horse snuck through on the inside of the curve and pulled out in front
The former leaders rallied and closed the distance
with Mystik Dan winning in a thrilling photo finish
Most “CADdies,” as we call ourselves
We don’t run the “fastest two minutes in sports” as the horses do
we’re in training throughout our lives to meet the daily challenges and excel in our activities
We can do this and emerge in our own winners’ circles

— Bored and with time on his hands between games against the Louisville Bats
Jayson Werth and a few of his Syracuse SkyChiefs teammates wandered over to Churchill Downs on a random day in May
A baseballer through and through, with genetic Major League lines tracing from his great-grandfather to his grandfather to his uncle to his stepfather, Werth knew two things about horse racing: They competed for something called the Triple Crown, and the Kentucky Derby was a big deal
Werth hit the ninth race of the day when a horse by the name of U.S
Jets crossed first for the fifth win of what would eventually be a middling 12-win career
Werth left Churchill with $3,500 in winnings
a veritable king’s ransom for a minor leaguer
Though he always remembered the horse’s name
he promptly forgot about the sport for the next two decades as he roared into a 15-year career in the big leagues and won the 2008 World Series with the Phillies
will be one of 20 horses to break from the gate for the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby
The road from casual bettor to a man who on Wednesday afternoon was handing out MHRGA (Make Horse Racing Great Again) hats en route to a crawfish boil at his barn is indeed a pivot
“Anybody who knows me wouldn’t be surprised,’’ Werth tells The Athletic by phone while tossing out hats
“My mom always says I only know how to go all in
I played baseball from the time I was five until I was 39
Werth wasn’t sure what he was looking for when horse racing found him
searching for something but not quite sure what it was
buying a 300-acre plot of land in Illinois
Werth teed up for a round of golf with his friend
Averill got started in horse racing the same year that Werth was cashing in on U.S
partnering on a gelding named Fun n’ Gun that year
He now has 725 starts and more than $4 million in earnings
As Werth watched the horses come around the final turn
he felt a very familiar surge building inside him
“It’s like playing a big game and you’re sitting in the dugout
down two in the bottom of the ninth,’’ he explains
and you’re cheering and screaming because that’s all you can do
he partnered with baseball agent Jeff Berry and Florida real estate developer Shawn Kaleta to form Two Eight Racing
he bought some fillies and quite literally went off to the races
Blessed with a sweet dose of beginner’s luck
Werth made his first Derby appearance last year
a moment Werth compares to his World Series victory in terms of its immediate euphoria
That victory not only gave Werth a new jolt of competitive fire
it provided him with a dose of something he says he never felt before: nerves
“I’ve played with a guy who would throw up before every game
‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ And now here I am
but I have all these crazy emotions with this sport.’’
he doubled down on both his investment in horses — he is the front and center owner for Flying Mohawk — and his commitment to the sport
“Horse racing does a terrible job marketing itself,’’ he says
noting more than a few friends and former teammates who are skeptical about his new passion
They don’t see that there is more good than bad
and most of these horses are not only treated well
Watch them and you know they want to go.’’
bringing buddies to the track or to the barn to let them see for themselves the majesty of its athletes and the draw of a race day
Filled with the blush of first love for his new passion
Werth also feels compelled to spread the joy
turning himself into a self-appointed horse racing pied piper
Have a hat!” He loves almost everything about horse racing — “I was like the bubble boy
so I’m fairly certain I’m allergic to everything in the barn,’’ he says — and wants people to feel what he feels
He’s also savvy enough to understand his own personal draw
With his long hair hanging out from his fedora
and his MLB fame brings a different kind of attention to his horse and horse racing by extension
He knows that bringing more people with some celebrity cache will only raise the industry’s profile
Werth did not expect Flying Mohawk to be a Derby contender
The horse’s first five races were all on turf
But trainer Whit Beckman had a plan for the $72,000
He moved Flying Mohawk to the synthetic surface at Turfway Park for the Jeff Ruby Steaks
When Flying Mohawk finished second there in March
he earned enough points to make it into the Derby field
setting off a celebration so boisterous that people with the actual winner
wondered what Werth and his team were doing down by the winners’ circle
Werth knows that with no real experience yet on dirt
Flying Mohawk will be a long shot (he opened with 30-1 odds)
“Owning a horse that runs in the Kentucky Derby is literally the highest level of sports,’’ he says
“It’s like getting your name called on Opening Day to run out on the field for a storied franchise like the Phillies or the Yankees or somebody like that.” He pauses for comedic effect
Then he’s asked to do the impossible: Where might a Derby victory line up on his personal list of accomplishments
with the bonkers Philadelphia parade as 1A
Then he ruminates for a few minutes on his own athletic foundation — the great-grandfather
whose pro career was cut short by injury; the grandfather
who spent 18 years in the Majors and won a World Series with the Pirates in 1960; the uncle
who spent 14 years in the bigs and also won a World Series
a former first baseman for the Yankees and the Royals; and his mom
a track star who competed in the 1976 Olympic Trials
“To win a Kentucky Derby at this point would take over them all
We’re here for a reason and we’re going for it.”
The one thing we don’t get to see him fully lean into very often
in which he stars opposite Olivia Colman as a married couple having some pretty extreme relationship troubles
Cumberbatch and Colman are Theo and Ivy Rose
spouses living a seemingly perfect life with their kids in a beautiful house by the beach
jealousy and resentment starts bubbling up
with Theo’s career takes a downward turn just as Ivy’s is taking off
Cue a series of escalating jabs and retaliations at each other as they start to face their marital problems – including awkward exchanges over dinner
Based on Warren Adler’s novel of the same name, which is itself a reimagining of the 1989 film The War Of The Roses, this big-screen adaptation is written by Poor Things’ Tony McNamara and directed by Meet The Parents and Bombshell’s Jay Roach
Kate McKinnon and more popping up in the trailer

The pair star as a seemingly perfect married couple
Upcoming comedy movie The Roses has confirmed its UK release date as Monday 1st September 2025
meaning that it's only a short while until we see the likes of Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch on our screens together
The pair are leading the movie as a seemingly picture perfect couple who are living on the coast of California and seem to have it all – that is
According to the synopsis of the film: \"Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers
But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.\"
The new film sees Cumberbatch and Colman in the lead roles
with the rest of the cast proving to be just as star-studded with the likes of Ncuti Gatwa
Belinda Bromilow and Kate McKinnon all starring
The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 comedy The War of the Roses
which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner
with their material possessions becoming the centre of a very bitter divorce battle
The Roses will chronicle the rise of Ivy's career – rather than Theo's – and will see Theo lose his job
In one image, we see a particularly loved-up image of Theo and Ivy, while another shows Ivy at work in what appears to be a café. The images were originally released via Vanity Fair
with Cumberbatch telling the publication: \"The film is a parable of two people who loved each other intensely
then ended up hating each other intensely and missing the middle ground
\"Much of it is shockingly recognisable: how we struggle to show love toward the people we love the most
and how this can all go wrong very quickly if we're not careful about nurturing and nourishing the relationships at the centre of our families.\"
Speaking of the change in the narrative in The Roses compared to the 1989 film
screenwriter Tony McNamara said: “That’s what so many couples understand now
how the balance between two careers is such a trick to solve in a marriage
very ambitious—how are they going to balance staying married and staying in love?\"
On the announcement of the movie last year
Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield said: \"The Roses is a wildly funny
we have a dream team bringing it to life.\"
Cumberbatch's SunnyMarch is also producing the movie along with Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland
Ackland also said: \"We are thrilled to be working on this very special film with such an incredible team
We have been long admirers of Jay’s work and his vision and passion to tell this story is incredibly inspiring.\"

UPDATE: Follow the latest odds for the 2025 Kentucky Derby here
We'll update it throughout the day on Saturday
So, you’re going with Journalism as your pick to win Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs
Journalism is the 3-1 morning-line favorite for the Kentucky Derby but will have to buck a recent trend of six straight post-time favorites not winning the Run for the Roses
the last four winners of the Kentucky Derby went in the gate with double-digit odds: Mandaloun (26-1 in 2021)
Mage (15-1 in 2023) and Mystik Dan (18-1 in 2024)
(Mandaloun won via disqualification after Medina Spirit
This trend follows a streak of six straight post-time favorites winning the Kentucky Derby from 2013-18
“There’s a thousand and one things that can go wrong once the gates open,” said Flying Mohawk trainer Whit Beckman
trying to explain the randomness of the Kentucky Derby
“You don’t necessarily need the best horse to win the race
but you need a horse who gets the trip and can handle the distance.”
If you’re looking for options other than Journalism to win the Kentucky Derby
He’s the second choice in the morning line at 5-1 and has trainer Bill Mott thinking about capturing his second Kentucky Derby victory
“I think we have as good of a chance this year as we’ve probably ever had,” Mott said
Sovereignty won the Grade 3 Street Sense Stakes last October at Churchill Downs — a race that also included Kentucky Derby contenders Tiztastic and Sandman — and will enter the Run for the Roses off a second-place finish in the Florida Derby
Sovereignty made a strong late run in the Florida Derby and figures to be charging late in the Kentucky Derby
so we always have the impression those horses will go further,” Mott said
Sometimes they close well going a mile and an eighth
and then they don’t close as well going a mile and a quarter
I hope he continues to be able to sustain his run
but until they do it they haven’t proven it
… They have to do it on the first Saturday in May.”
Like Sovereignty, Burnham Square figures to be running late like he did in rallying from last place to win the Blue Grass
“I think he matches up well,” trainer Ian Wilkes said
“And I think a mile and a quarter is right in my wheelhouse.”
Burnham Square will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr.
who won last year’s Kentucky Derby with Mystik Dan
His supporters also will like a steady progression of Beyer Speed Figures since his first race — 58
“He’s getting better and better each time,” Wilkes said
Baeza needed one defection to make the Kentucky Derby field
The late-developing colt broke his maiden Feb
14 and then briefly took the lead in the Santa Anita Derby before finishing as the runner-up
three-quarters of a length behind Journalism
“I thought he ran a remarkable race,” trainer John Shirreffs said
Shirreffs won the Kentucky Derby with 50-1 shot Giacomo in 2005
More horse racing: Why each horse can, can't win the Kentucky Derby
“Before the Roses, I’d produced The Woodentops, The La’s, and XTC as The Dukes Of Stratosphear… To be honest
[Rough Trade boss] Geoff Travis had sent me their original demos
One thing I didn’t realise for years is that Made Of Stone’s vocal melody is the same as the Dukes’ 25 O’Clock
but I think it was because Geoff suggested me
READ MORE: John Squire interviewed: “A third album would have been beyond us...”
"My first impression of the demos was
another indie band.” It was badly recorded
everything was too fast and the vocals were over-drenched in reverb
I had to rehearse them and rearrange songs
all feedback and noise like they did on-stage
‘That’s boring on record; do something melodic that people will remember.’
‘Why can’t that bit sound as good as that bit?’ He wanted to explore different amps and guitars
but he made most of the first album with a Stratocaster
He’d set up his 16-track Fostex recorder in a little space in the studio
I don’t remember difficulties recording Ian
“Can we turn Reni down?” Ian thought the harmonies sounded too ’60s
"I get so engrossed in recording that I never project in terms of an audience or the impact a record will make; you just want to make something that you’d listen to at home. We always knew I Wanna Be Adored would start and I Am The Resurrection would end it
but once we had the whole running order we realised
They said the drums and bass weren’t loud enough
and the guitar needed to be more devastating: they’d been playing Public Enemy in the studio all the time
"After the album became successful, Zomba said, “Do whatever you want.” Ian and John had the Fools Gold demo with the breakbeat loop from [James Brown's] Funky Drummer and we spent three weeks at Sawmills in Cornwall recording it and What The World Is Waiting For
It took four days alone just doing the wah-wah guitar
There was no Pro Tools then to do it for you
my grandchildren listen to The Stone Roses
‘That record with the funny colour and splashes of paint
"I knew the second album was a problem when they didn’t show up
Or they’d endlessly play the same thing over and over
"He said, ‘No problem, just let them be creative, don’t worry about the budget.’ The studio cost £800 a day – and the programmer hired to do loops for £400 a day was just sitting there. They had the best drummer in the world, and they wanted to use drum machines! It was a nightmare. I left after three months and they finished Second Coming 14 months later
a good arranger and between a good and a great guitarist
I was always disappointed that the Roses never expanded their horizons.”

I first traded my bike for walking by accident
but amid a familiar Stanford of “move fast break things,” physics psets and mid-college crises
I discovered a new world: one where students deliberately take the time to slow down their days
when I realized my bike had in fact been stolen
I approached the first day of winter quarter with a new mindset of journeying on foot
my days of walking have turned into a new lifestyle that has lasted up until now as an almost graduate
the journey of walking to my daily obligations has become an event of gratitude in itself
I interviewed some fellow “full-time” walkers of the Stanford community
While almost all seem to have entered this world as a result of some type of biking challenge
they have since made the deliberate choice to make foot their sole mode of travel
Chloe’s walking journey is an excuse to listen to any and all music
“It’s my grounding exercise before any activity,” she says

Parthav found walking the best way to explore the city

you will always find Maya on campus with a smile
You’ll hear her shouting across campus to friends and see her no doubt sporting a new fit.

When I ran into Josh on the way to Main Quad
He embodied the type of a mysterious student – eyes wandering
Living in Mirrielees means his walks are especially long
but Josh finds many productive ways to use his walking time
other times he listens to books or podcasts to help him guide his thesis on energy conflict in the Middle East
though many of our physical houses and walking paths have changed
It’s these in between times filled with laughs
hello and spontaneous run-ins that remind me that perhaps my favorite Stanford memories are not the momentous but actually the mundane.

Her walking journeys are her little moments of nature in her MCS year lifestyle
Her attitude mirrors the environment around her
You’ll find her bumping to EDM (electronic dance music) artist Sammy Virji while strolling back from a Wilbur dinner or perhaps on a run with resident bestie Tobey Solomon
reminiscing of days of space and nature in their otherwise busy lives on campus
but his choice of walking was originally one of necessity when he couldn’t afford a new bike.
“do nothing and stare into space.” Rich says this actually may be the most useful way of using walking time
Danny loves that he’s “racked up steps” and is actually more on time for things than he was a biker
but is most grateful for a chance to clear his mind.
Maybe this article has convinced you to start walking across campus
getting to know the community of walkers on campus has allowed me to see a new mindset about the Stanford experience: one rooted in community
and the capacity to slow down and enjoy the experience.
Losing your bike may be a blessing in disguise

4. RodriguezWhy he can win: Returned to his comfort zone while winning the Wood Memorial Stakes on the lead
and he seems the most likely of the speed horses in the Derby to be able to steal it
but jockey Mike Smith knows how to win this race
Why he can’t win: Will the Derby gods really allow Baffert to win the Derby upon his return from a three-year suspension
Why he can win: The Todd Pletcher-Mike Repole connection has been unlucky the last two years with Forte and Fierceness
Maybe flying under the radar will be a path to success
Why he can’t win: While most Kentucky Derby betting angles have gone by the wayside in recent years — remember the “Curse of Apollo?” — it’s still tough to back a horse who didn’t race as a 2-year-old and has just three career starts

Good Cheer won Friday’s 151st running of the Oaks by 2 1/4 lengths
making it the third time in the last seven years that Cox has been the winning trainer
The Louisville native won in 2018 with Monomoy Girl and 2020 with Shedaresthedevil
But none were quite as dominant as Good Cheer, who is now undefeated in seven starts including a perfect 4-for-4 mark at Churchill Downs
"I'm not sure what her ceiling is," Cox said
as she broke wide coming off the second turn and simply outraced the pack
extending a length-and-a-half lead to win comfortably
All of a sudden, it’s fair to ask, can Cox duplicate Kenny McPeek this year
McPeek became the first trainer since 1952 to sweep the Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year
If it feels like there are similarities between the two
Both had fillies that were the better horse
He pulled it off with a near-perfect trip from the No
Cox’s horse, Final Gambit
At 30-1 odds, he’s even more of a long shot than Mystik Dan (18-1) was last year. Cox is still looking for a chance to cross the finish line first. His Derby victory in 2021 with Mandaloun was only awarded after Medina Spirit failed a drug test and was disqualified
there’s currently plenty Good Cheer in Cox’s barn
She’s a superstar in the making having accepted and met every challenge to date
Challenge might not even be the right word
as Good Cheer has won all of her races by a combined 44 3/4 lengths
Cox acknowledged there were some skeptics of her ability to win the Oaks because of her speed figures that didn't suggest there would be any separation
That other fillies in the field could run just as fast as her
"The one thing I kept going back with her was she beat some really good fillies in Quietside here in the fall and some others," Cox said
And that's probably the most impressive thing
Friday’s running of the Kentucky Oaks wasn’t about speed figures or best trips
It came down to which filly could handle all of the intangibles that no trainer or jockey could plan for in the days leading up to the race
as could they be prepared for running on a sloppy track
But no one imagined the severe weather delay that hit Churchill Downs around the ninth race at 4 p.m
The video monitors throughout the stands and stationed near concessions all posted an ominous warning reiterated by a voice over the public announcement system telling them to seek shelter
It sent well-dressed spectators in their pink-clad outfits to the exits in droves like the outcome was decided in the final minutes of a basketball game
it only led to about a 10-minute delay for the Oaks' post at 6:03 p.m
That wasn't enough time to damper Good Cheer's run
Cox said while the track was wetter than he thought during the walk over to the paddock
Good Cheer won an allowance race over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs by 17 lengths in September
"She'd handled track and performed very well on our off track here last September
so we were confident that she could handle it," Cox said
Good Cheer solidified her place in history
Cox will see if Final Gambit can do the same

among others) and will follow a married couple who are living what is seemingly a perfect life
when the wife realizes she no longer loves her husband after 17 years together
Per Deadline, the synopsis reads: “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers
But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.”

Though the title is an allusion to the historical 15th-century battles between the warring houses of York and Lancaster (also somewhat the basis of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones)
With the original film being an in-depth exploration of the inner workings of a marriage as well as a commentary on rampant materialism
the remake should be an interesting take of similar themes in a modern world
