so the ancient mass grave in Vienna is a rare find
The remains of about 150 Roman soldiers have been discovered beneath a soccer field in the Austrian capital of Vienna
indicating a fierce battle against Germanic warriors happened there in the first or second century A.D
Construction workers found the remains in a mass grave beneath a sports field in the city's southern Simmering district during renovations in October 2024
The remains have now been extensively studied, and the find was announced by the city's authorities Wednesday (April 2)
According to the translated statement, the individuals in the mass grave were exclusively men, some of whom were buried with distinctive armor and weapons that established that they'd been Roman soldiers
Many had injuries on their bones caused by weapons like lances
which indicated that their deaths were due to fighting

but then Germanic warriors were about the same height
They seem to have been buried in no recognizable order or physical orientation
and had been generally in good health until their violent deaths
according to an analysis of their bones and teeth
"The injuries to the bones are clearly due to fighting," said Michaela Binder

which the city has contracted to investigate the find
it can be ruled out that the site of the find is connected to a military hospital or the like
or that an epidemic was the cause of death," she said

Thousands of Roman soldiers were stationed at the Vindobona fort at its height in the third century A.D.
and the nearby settlement was home to about 20,000 people
Several written accounts survive about Roman soldiers fighting with Germanic warriors along the frontier
but the mass grave is the first physical evidence of fighting at this time and place

The city authorities said in the statement that the mass grave may have been caused by a major battle in the area, which was then used by the Romans as a reason to expand the fort's defenses and garrison of soldiers.
Archaeologists are still analyzing the remains from the mass grave and the many artifacts found there, which include a dagger, pieces of armor and the nails from shoes. The researchers hope ancient DNA analysis and isotope analysis of the bones will reveal more about the origins and the living conditions of the soldiers buried there.

AAAS CEO Sudip Parikh testified as a bipartisan witness before the U.S
Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday
about the urgent moment facing biomedical research
If federal agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services and National Science Foundation follow through on planned cuts to funding
risks losing its position as global leader in life-saving research and innovations — the impacts of which could be felt for generations.
underscored the critical importance of obligating congressionally appropriated funds for the remainder of fiscal year 2025
and urged Senate appropriators to ensure there are adequate funding levels for 2026
the nation will lose the race for global research & development leadership
and not reap the benefits of future discoveries.
Below is a selection of quotes from Parikh’s oral testimony:
“Our ecosystem includes a vibrant biotech and pharmaceutical industry
and diverse sources of capital from all across this country and talent from everywhere ..
But it all starts with federal funding for biomedical research.”
“There’s the possibility of catastrophic cuts in [FY]26
I've seen and I know you all have seen the leaked passback budget [for NIH]
But if those dollar numbers of anywhere from 20% to 45% [cuts] are real
We're no longer in a race with China on biomedical research
“The scientific community is in paralysis right now
There are graduate student scientists and there are senior scientists who aren’t thinking about [long-term research]
they are thinking about the next six weeks...it’s about making sure we see some stability
a downward slope that we can’t pull out of
what is going to be the language of science
“We've got to be the protagonists of our own story
like the idea that we're not going to obligate funds that you already appropriated
destroy something that we've built over 80 years
we can't just put it back together again next year.”
I'm optimistic that we can find a way forward together
but we’ve got to start doing it now.”

Microsoft researchers have published a paper in Nature that quantifies for the first time how much energy and water are consumed and greenhouse gas emissions are produced by four datacenter cooling techniques across the entire lifespan of the datacenters
This so-called life cycle assessment evaluates more than just which resources are consumed during datacenter operations – it also digs into what was required to produce all the virtual machines
transportation at different points in the process and even eventual disposal
That’s the type of data that researchers say can help companies design datacenters to use less carbon
“A lot of people do life cycle assessments after the fact,” to understand a datacenter’s environmental impact after it’s built
director of systems technology in Cloud Operations and Innovation at Microsoft and leader of the lifecycle assessment study
“When we’re trying to make future design decisions
we typically look at total cost of ownership
We’re advocating in this paper for the use of life cycle assessment tools to guide engineering decisions early on and also sharing the tool with the industry to make adoption easier.”
Microsoft plans to use the findings from life cycle assessments that account for datacenters’ carbon
water and energy impacts to inform new datacenter designs and cloud operations and to help meet its broader sustainability goals
the study found that switching from air cooling to cold plates that cool datacenter chips more directly – a newer technology that Microsoft is deploying in its datacenters – could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy demand by roughly 15 percent and water consumption by 30 to 50 percent across the datacenters’ entire life spans
This is not just water used for cooling but also in power generation and manufacturing of components
This level of detail is rare and hard to uncover – in fact it took the team more than two years to complete the analysis
The paper is the first to detail how to construct a life cycle assessment for cooling in cloud operations
It also introduces a new approach to help others build apples-to-apples comparisons of environmental burden
anyone in the industry will be able to plug in their own data and scenarios to conduct a life cycle assessment of their own operations
‘this is the right technology.’ They all could be
There are different circumstances that make you use a technology,” Alissa said
“What we’re trying to do here is tell the industry
‘Here’s how you build an end-to-end life cycle assessment that takes cooling into account
And here is a tool for you that you can customize to your specific needs and then make a decision.”
The published Nature study covers cooling chips for general compute
not the specialized chips designed to handle AI workloads
The team is working on a follow-up to examine life cycle impacts of AI chips and expects to see similar improvements with advanced cooling methods
datacenter operations depend on external factors such as local energy grids
The Nature paper also quantified how much energy
water and greenhouse gas emissions could be saved by switching from a typical energy grid to 100 percent renewable sources of energy
finding that greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by 85 to 90 percent regardless of what cooling technologies were used
Microsoft is aiming to replace its energy load with 100 percent renewable energy
In locations where fully renewable energy isn’t available through the local grid
it purchases a comparable amount of renewable energy available elsewhere
the team spent more than two years studying four cooling technologies: air cooling
one-phase immersion and two-phase immersion for servers
Air cooling has been a standard approach for cooling datacenters
but the industry has more recently been exploring cooling technologies that rely on liquids
which can dissipate heat much more directly and efficiently than air
Cold plates are a type of direct-to-chip cooling because a coolant is pumped in a loop to a flat container that sits right on top of the chips in a server rack
One-phase immersion involves operating servers in a tank that has cooling fluid pushed through in a circuit
server racks are in a tank filled with a different fluid that boils at low temperatures
The study found that cold plates and the two immersion cooling technologies reduce greenhouse gas emissions 15 to 21 percent over their entire life cycles
energy demand 15 to 20 percent and water consumption 31 to 52 percent in datacenters
The team expected the three liquid methods to outperform air cooling on carbon emissions and water and energy consumption
but those benefits hadn’t been quantified across the entire life cycle of those technologies
Two-phase immersion has potential for reductions in all areas
but it currently uses liquid polyfluoroalkyl substances
which are under regulatory scrutiny in the European Union and the U.S.
putting them at odds with pollution-reduction goals and possibly making them unavailable in the future
Microsoft has investigated but is not currently using immersion cooling technologies in datacenter operations
What we’re trying to do here is tell the industry
And here is a tool for you that you can customize to your specific needs and then make a decision
Microsoft is already installing cold plates in its datacenters while also exploring other next-generation cooling techniques. For instance
Microsoft has begun deploying rack-scale cold plate cooling technology using heat exchanger units
or “sidekicks,” alongside AI infrastructure servers powered by the latest GPUs
“It was interesting to see that cold plates could be as good as the two immersion cooling methods,” said Teresa Nick
natural systems and sustainability for Cloud Operations and Innovation at Microsoft and co-author of the paper in Nature
The calculation of design factors such as total cost of ownership
time to market and even reliability is mostly straightforward to quantify and compare
That isn’t the case with sustainability impacts
which can be hard to define and calculate across an entire supply chain and datacenter ecosystem
Getting information about how raw materials were obtained
water and energy involved in manufacturing
The Microsoft authors pressed suppliers to divulge such data though not all of them participated
then produced formulas so they – and others – could estimate the figures in the future
public and shared in databases could help accelerate life cycle assessment efforts,” Alissa added
Life cycle assessment can also be used to inform all aspects of datacenter structure and function
including how to optimize and run a datacenter most efficiently
One technology might do better on one measure
with none of them outperforming in every area
we’re trying to understand the trade-offs,” Nick said
“You’re trying to understand the context of what you’re doing and what the impacts are.”

As Israeli forces resume and expand their offensive on Gaza
Palestinian lives are once again being systematically destroyed
JERUSALEM, April 16, 2025 — As Israeli forces resume and expand their military offensive by air, ground, and sea on the Gaza Strip in Palestine
forcibly displacing people and deliberately blocking essential aid
said the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) today.
"Gaza has been turned into a mass grave of Palestinians and those coming to their assistance,” said Amande Bazerolle
“We are witnessing in real time the destruction and forced displacement of the entire population in Gaza
With nowhere safe for Palestinians or those trying to help them
the humanitarian response is severely struggling under the weight of insecurity and critical supply shortages
We are witnessing in real time the destruction and forced displacement of the entire population in Gaza
the humanitarian response is severely struggling
Over 50,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October 2023
Since the resumption of hostilities on March 18
According to the United Nations, at least 409 aid workers, most of whom were staff from UNWRA, the main provider of humanitarian aid in Gaza, have been killed since October 2023. Eleven MSF colleagues, some while on duty, have been killed since the start of the war
In the latest attack by Israeli forces on aid workers
the bodies of 15 emergency responders and the ambulances they were traveling in were found in a mass grave on March 30 in Rafah
The group was killed by Israeli forces while trying to assist civilians caught in shelling on March 23
Recent publicly shared evidence has shown that the workers and their vehicles were clearly marked and identifiable
challenging the initial claims given by Israeli authorities
“This horrific killing of aid workers is yet another example of the complete disregard shown by Israeli forces for the protection of humanitarian and medical workers,” said Claire Magone
“The silence and unconditional support of Israel's closest allies further emboldens these actions.”
Only international and independent investigations can bring to light the circumstances of these attacks on aid workers
This horrific killing of aid workers is yet another example of the complete disregard shown by Israeli forces for the protection of humanitarian and medical workers.
Although the situation in Gaza has been catastrophic for over 18 months
in the past three weeks MSF has witnessed several incidents involving the killing of humanitarian and medical workers.
The coordination of humanitarian movements with Israeli authorities
known as the Humanitarian Notification System (HNS)
has become more unreliable and now barely affords any guarantees of protection
Shells or bullets have hit health facilities where we work
and other locations where humanitarian stakeholders have informed Israeli authorities of their presence
Areas near health care facilities have been subjected to strikes
MSF teams have had to leave many facilities
while others continue operating with staff and patients trapped inside and unable to leave safely for hours at a time
On April 7, MSF teams and patients were trapped in the MSF field hospital in Deir al-Balah
endangering both patients and staff and leading to an evacuation order by Israeli forces
who also carried out strikes near the compounds of Al-Aqsa and Nasser hospitals
We strongly denounce these actions by the warring parties and call on them to respect and protect health care facilities
teams have been unable to return to Al-Shaboura clinic in Rafah
The full siege on Gaza has depleted food, fuel, and medical stocks
MSF is facing especially acute shortages of medications for pain management and chronic illnesses
The lack of fuel across the Strip will inevitably lead to the suspension of medical activities
as hospitals rely on generators for electricity to keep patients in critical condition alive and conduct lifesaving operations.
Humanitarians have been forced to watch people suffer and die while carrying the impossible burden of providing relief with depleted supplies
all while facing the same life-threatening conditions themselves
“Israeli authorities have deliberately blocked all aid from entering Gaza for over a month,” said Bazerolle
“Humanitarians have been forced to watch people suffer and die while carrying the impossible burden of providing relief with depleted supplies
There is no way they can carry out their mission under such circumstances
This is not a humanitarian failure—it is a political choice
and a deliberate assault on a people’s ability to survive
Israeli authorities must end their collective punishment of Palestinians
We urge Israel's allies to end their complicity and stop enabling the destruction of Palestinian lives

Hals stands by a mound of earth in his yard
he had dug a trench there to install water pipes
It likely took a hit from the excavator when the trench was dug
Hans and his son Kjell start digging in the mound of earth
according to the report archaeologist Louis Smedstad wrote in 1956
and he determines that the jaws belong to a dog and a horse
archaeologists from Oslo arrive at the farm
They continue digging with help from Hans and Kjell
Archaeologists believe there was once a burial mound here that was later levelled with the terrain
At the bottom of the pit they are now digging
They have found the remains of a Viking boat
but the rivets remain where the boat was once buried
but the rows of rivets are intact at both ends
The original placement of the weapons in the grave is unknown
The discovery of the grave – this Viking buried in a boat – attracts local attention
The newspaper Drammens Tidende interviews Hans Hals
Schoolchildren and local residents come to watch the excavation
the archaeologists take the items to the museum in Oslo
They send photos from the excavation to Hans and Kjell
we're sitting in the kitchen of the Hals family
and a dog were buried in a boat a thousand years ago.
she was attending a home economics school and was dating Kjell
"He came by to tell me what they had found on the farm
but his father wasn't so enthusiastic about it," says Sigrid
"But there wasn't much talk about it," she says today
Sigrid and Kjell's grandson and Marit's son
"It's only been a couple of years since I saw the photos from the excavation
It's a shame we don't know more," says Simen
"It was kind of random that he was named Odin
"It probably has something to do with the burial mounds around here," says Sigrid
Hals farm sits at the highest point of what used to be an island a thousand years ago
at a level up to six metres higher than today.
The area is full of traces from early times. Where Simen lives, there are three burial mounds. And under the neighbour's garage, they found evidence of an Iron Age burial. The longhouse at Sem is only a couple of kilometres away.
"It's strange to think the whole area used to be underwater," says Sigrid
Marit remembers hunting for trilobites as a child
These are fossils of tiny creatures that once lived in the sea
only a few in the top echelons of society were buried in large ships
It must have been a man of wealth and power whom they chose to honour with the sacrifice of an entire boat
"It's kind of like burying a tractor today
It's cool to think that the guy buried here might have been a great chieftain and that he possibly lived on this very farm
It's fun to think we're walking the same ground as those Vikings," says Simen
The Viking grave is part of the family story – a memory that fades with each generation.
But what happened to the things they found on the farm
She is an archaeologist and curator at the University of Oslo's Museum of Cultural History
She has examined the find from Hals farm.
of a type that was common in the period 800-850 CE
It was likely produced in Norway or Scandinavia
but we can still get information from it through X-rays," she says
The grave goods were not in good condition.
"From what I've seen of the condition the objects were in
they wouldn't measure up to the Oseberg find
But nothing really does," says Aannestad.
She emphasises that the objects are still valuable for research
"Complete burial finds like this are rare today," she says
The objects were registered at the museum when they arrived. They are now listed in the Unimus portal, including the boat rivets
It turns out that the bones were sent to the University Museum in Bergen in 1956
Olaug Flatnes Bratbak works with the collections in Bergen
She has reviewed the material from Hals.
Every gram of human and animal remains was analysed and recorded
Bratbak explains that the bones were not burned
The jaws and bones of the horse and dog were also there.
it also states that there were remains of ox
This is not mentioned in the Unimus portal.
Hanne Aannestad explains that when the deceased was laid in the grave
They were placed whole in the grave – or in the horse's case
and cattle were placed in the grave as food offerings or as part of a ritual meal for the deceased
and therefore not as whole animals," says Aannestad.
This matches the fact that far fewer bones from pigs
and cattle were found than from the dog and horse.
"The animals were placed in different parts of the boat
This suggests that the animals had different roles in the burial," says Aannestad
The museum archive in Oslo has sent over everything they have related to the Hals discovery
It turns out that the boat grave was not the first ancient find made at Hals farm
Olaf is Marit's great-grandfather and Simen's great-great-grandfather
Olaf found eight bronze objects lying in a layer of charcoal
It was a grave where the deceased had been cremated.
He found nothing more and took the objects to the museum.
In the book Eikers historie (The history of Eiker)
written by archaeologist Øystein Kock Johansen
it states that this is "one of the finest graves from this period in Norway" and that the burial is unique in a Norwegian context
Later generations of the Hals family had never heard of this discovery
Jes Martens is an archaeologist at the Museum of Cultural History
He is an expert on the pre-Roman Iron Age – the period which the grave Olaf found dates from
Women used bronze fibulae to fasten their dresses at the shoulders
"It functioned similarly to a modern safety pin
but only one was found in the grave at Hals," says Martens
he believes it was a woman who was buried at Hals
"It's hard to determine if it was a man or woman when the bones are burnt
but the objects suggest it was a woman," says Martens
The fibula and belt buckle may have been made in Sweden.
Several objects in the grave suggest a Swedish origin
These are often found in graves in Västergötland
"This could mean that the deceased woman came from Sweden and married a man at Hals," he says
In 2019, a similar fibula was found near Sem, where the large longhouse once stood.
"The fact that two such fibulae have been found in the same area
suggests close connections between Øvre Eiker and Västergötland in Sweden," says Martens
The couple at Hals may have represented an alliance between elites from the two regions
The finds from Hals and Sem show that Eiker
held an important and central position as early as the end of the pre-Roman Iron Age
The links to Västergötland reinforce that view
the Hals family travelled to Oslo to see the artefacts found on their farm
They went to the Museum of Cultural History
"They told us everything was stored elsewhere and that we should have contacted them ahead of time
But we never ended up going back," says Sigrid
The family finds it unfortunate that information about the finds doesn't make its way back to the farms and local communities
"It's a shame for the interest in this area
only a closed circle of people hears about it
because then the interest would grow and people would be more motivated if they discovered something in their fields," says Marit
"I wish I knew more about who these people were and how they lived," says Simen
Hanne Aannestad from the Museum of Cultural History explains that today
much more emphasis is placed on maintaining good relationships with landowners
We've heard the stories of archaeologists who took objects and then people never heard anything more
We've become more aware of this in recent years
because we can't expect people to support our work just because a professor says they should," says Aannestad.
If the Hals family were to visit Oslo today
"We often have visits from families or others who want to see what's been found on their property
and we at the museum manage them on behalf of everyone," says Aannestad
a birch tree now stands as a kind of memorial to the Viking
The family believes it was planted in 1956 when the excavation ended
but maybe the birch should have a plaque or sign about the find made here instead
A lot of people walk past here," says Simen Hals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A new report revealed there are at least ten possible graves on the Tropicana Field property
Petersburg city leaders have to figure out what they’re going to do with that information
a group of lifelong residents gathered to talk about the city’s history with Tropicana Field
It was about the three cemeteries once located there
“We’ve always known that all the buildings and all the development that came later on
they had not completely removed all of the bodies out of there,” said one resident
These are the kind of conversations Givens said leaders need to hear
especially after a new report revealed there are at least ten suspected graves on the property and more areas of interest
“I definitely think we need to engage more descendants like myself
We need to be talking to stakeholders like the African American history museum
We should be talking to some of these veteran organizations,” Givens said
archeologists from Stantec used ground penetrating radar to scan the sections of the property
Givens said he was surprised city leaders didn’t mention the findings in the report that was completed last November during all of the discussions about the now failed redevelopment project
But I was saddened to know the city has known this for months and they didn’t disclose it to the public,” Givens said
Antionette Jackson’s team has not only suspected graves were at the site
they now know more about who was buried in one of the three cemeteries
“We found over 300 names of people who were buried in Evergreen Cemetery
We’re also connecting with living descendants today,” said Jackson
“I think this is going to help with this conversation the city needs to have and the redevelopment team needs to have.”
Jackson and her team at the Black Cemeteries Network are working on a project to find out more about the cemeteries on the property: Moffet
“It’s a call to action for people who have any connection to Evergreen Cemetery to contact us,” she said
“We got a contract with the Florida Department of State to focus on Evergreen Cemetery
Who are the descendants of the people that are buried here?”
Givens said he’s determined to make sure that residents are heard as leaders decide the future of the property while honoring its history
addressing numerous needs and landing some incredibly talented players to bolster the roster
The Panthers entered the offseason knowing they had many holes to fill
and it would be unfair to expect them to solve every problem in one fell swoop
Noah Bryce of Cat Crave feels that general manager Dan Morgan should have done a better job of rectifying one position in particular: linebacker
Carolina had the worst defense in NFL history last season
and shoddy linebacker play was a big part of it
the Panthers signed Christian Rozeboom to a one-year deal
but Bryce feels that Morgan should have doubled down on the position in the draft last week
"The Panthers did not take a linebacker in the first round," Bryce wrote
"They didn't end up taking one at all
And this comes from a general manager who used to play the position and
should know just how important a strong second level is to a team's defensive strategy
this team needs to take a hard look at itself and realize it needs some more solid leaders down the middle in the future
Morgan must stop throwing band-aids on this obvious complication."
Carolina selecting wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with the eighth overall pick was a terrific move
and the Panthers went out and got one for him
But not taking a single linebacker over the rest of the draft is definitely a bit puzzling
Perhaps someone like second-year player Trevin Wallace will take a major step forward in 2025
but Carolina probably could have added another linebacker into the mix just to play it safe
The Panthers have certainly had a strong offseason overall
but this may have been a significant oversight on the part of Morgan
Analytics point to the Panthers’ 2025 draft class as one of the NFL’s best
Panthers may have landed NFL draft's biggest steal no one is talking about
Carolina Panthers had offers from at least 2 teams to trade up in Round 1

Fans online have been complaining about West's antics in response to the video
"I wonder if he says this for shock value or genuinely feels that way," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter)
Another added: "He’s obsessed with that man… Why are you mentioning him all the time?"
West previously explained his disrespectful attitude towards Abloh by describing himself as "evil" during an interview with DJ Akademiks
After he further wrote on X: "Imagine a n***a steal your dream and is given your crown because he ain’t wear a red hat and then the culture you built mad at you speaking up on it
My own friends that knew how bad it hurt me came tryna check me for speaking up

In other news, Kanye West made headlines, earlier this week, for releasing his 2022 album, Donda 2, on streaming services for the first time. The move did not go smoothly as several producers reached out to him, alleging that he never paid them for their work
"Free Maiden tried to charge me 3 million dollars for these beats from people I showed how to make beats to
Now he going to take down Donda 2," West revealed in a post on X
Donda 2 appears to still be available on streaming platforms
West is planning to put out his next album
He's already confirmed that he's working with Dave Blunts on the entirety of the project

(KRDO) - A Pueblo man tells KRDO13 Investigates that for decades
he visited what he thought was his grandmother's grave
has had a headstone at the Cavalry Cemetery in the City of La Junta since her early death in 1946
It was just last fall in 2024 that city officials with La Junta told him that someone else could be buried there
It was the same plot where he buried his own mother just a year prior to the notice
the City of La Junta has been ordered by a judge to pay for the movement of Montano's mother's remains
there's still a major missing piece to the puzzle: his grandma is still missing
Montano has several members of his family tree at the Cavalry Cemetery
Bessie left behind several children of hers in her untimely passing
meaning she went her whole life with no memories of her own mother
something that stuck with her through her own death from cancer in 2022
"Her dying wish was to be buried beside her own mother's grave," explained Montano
so she felt she wanted to be close to her in death. I promised her on her deathbed that I would do that."
matching a symbol on his mother's headstone
the ink has helped keep her spirit with him
"It's a reminder of what we've gone through
and it's also a reminder of my faith," he explained
he buried her cremains directly across from the headstone for Bessie
Bank records even show that Montano paid the City of La Junta $155 dollars for her burial
was me putting her in the ground," said Montano
Montano got a voicemail on his phone from Erin Harris
who was the contracted City Attorney for La Junta
She stated she needed to talk with him about the grave plot and gave her condolences over his mother's recent passing
"They have no idea where my grandmother is
and that while that might be her headstone
her direct quote to me was that there might be no one in that cemetery plot
'It's too expensive to find out about this
KRDO13 Investigates found within La Junta cemetery code that it costs $1,500 for the disinterment of an adult gravesite
a process that needs the written approval of a judge and those who own the grave site
They also tell Montano that he is not the rightful owner of the grave plot where his mother
and it's their grandmother whose Flo's cremains were buried alongside
KRDO13 Investigates is not naming the two siblings involved in the situation at the request of Montano
who believes they haven't done anything wrong
It is important to note that their grandma died the same year as Bessie did
A records request from KRDO13 Investigates shows a copy of the plot deed from 1947
The entire situation prompted the City of La Junta to file a Declaratory Judgment with the Otero County Court
It is a legal process that avoids going to a trial by having all parties within a certain matter agree to certain stipulations in order to settle the situation
alleging that Montano was claiming to have had ownership of the grave plot
which comes into obvious conflict with the sisters' possession of the deed
KRDO13 Investigates found through a records request that the court filing almost didn't even happen
emails between the City of La Junta and the two sisters show that the city was going to move both Flo and Bessie's markers and Flo's remains
It was only when the sisters went out of their way to request that the city contact Montano to alert him of the issue at hand that the city then arranged the call to him later that month
"We owe a debt of gratitude to that family because they prevented them from moving my mom anywhere
We don't even know where they would have put her," explained Montano
Putting his disbelief aside that the city almost took action without his consent
Montano says he also has no idea where the idea of a dispute over the plot's ownership even came from
We asked and sought permission from La Junta to bury her there
Its still unclear as to how Bessie was buried at the grave decades ago if the plot didn't technically belong to Montano's lineage at the time
nor how Montano was able to pay the City of La Junta $155 dollars for Flo's burial in 2023
It's one of many questions the City of La Junta has not answered for us as of the writing of this article
was to have an Otero County judge decide what Montano and the two sisters would need to do with their property
The stipulations began rather straightforward:
the city would arrange the removal of the cremains of Florence Pacheco
and have them placed under the control of Samuel Montano
who intended to have them moved to Roselawn Cemetery in Pueblo
the City of La Junta would reimburse the sisters with up to $700 for the creation of a new headstone for their grandma
took issue with the fact that the city ignored his request for the city to pay for the transfer of Flo and Bessie's items
since he felt that he was the one being wronged in the situation
they offered us first to sell a plot [to us] here
and then they offered us $1,500," explained Montano
where we live and I made it clear to [their attorney] that we don't want my mother here
An email obtained by KRDO13 Investigates from Bradley Tucker
the attorney representing the City in the declaratory judgment
"a clear answer on whether the city knows where his grandmother
we need to clarify whether we have any way of determining that."
Tucker's response was: "The city does not know where she is buried and has no way of determining that."
It made Montano realize that he would likely never get the truth about his grandma's body
and subsequently that his mother's dying wish to be buried with her was never actually fulfilled
"At least she knew that I tried," said a teary-eyed Montano
would believe any of this," he later added
KRDO13 Investigates spent weeks trying to get answers on behalf of Montano
we exchanged emails with La Junta City Manager Michael Hart
who originally agreed to an interview on March 13
to say that he was advised of the ongoing litigation
and that he could not speak about it any further
we continued to ask a number of questions via email
hoping to gain a more basic understanding of how this happened and give the City the opportunity to address claims made by Montano
We then called and left messages for Hart twice
we also called City Attorney Erin Harris-- twice
We even reached out via email to the Mayor of La Junta
"Michael and Erin should have a response for you soon regarding the specific concerns you’ve raised." We never heard from them
KRDO13 Investigates drove down to La Junta on April 2nd to try and speak with Mr
We happened to catch him out on a lunch break
We explained that we respected the integrity of the ongoing litigation
to give the city a fair opportunity to address how exactly this all happened
I've been on the job now for about a month and a half," stating that he had only taken office in early 2025
after the previous long-time city manager retired in 2024
He said that he would take a look at the emails that we had sent to him
and that he would try to answer them later that day
when we planned to circle back to City Hall
we were told he was at the office but not available
Our cameras happened to spot him through an open doorway
standing just around the corner from our conversation with his secretary
Montano has continued to fight the stipulated orders
because he says he doesn't want to settle the case
and allow the City to get away without answering for his grandma' missing body
"There is no price tag over someone's memories, their loved ones
or their faith, and all of those have been trampled on by the city of La Junta
He planned to hire an attorney to help do so
but after seeing how much it may cost him to litigate the situation
he reluctantly agreed to partake in a final April 16 court conference between the city and the two sisters to resolve the matter
the Otero County judge assigned to the case dismissed the Declaratory Judgement
since both he and the two sisters clarified that there was no dispute over who owned the plot
the judge ordered the City of La Junta to pay for the removal of Flo's remains and the removal of her and Bessie's markers
which will be transferred into Montano's possession
the city will also have to pay $700 towards the two sisters' new headstone for their grandmother at Cavalry Cemetery
Montano says those items will be brought to Roselawn Cemetery in Pueblo
He added that even once the paperwork was filed
there was never an apology by the city over his grandma's misplacement

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — St. Petersburg City Council members are set to take a closer look at a survey that revealed there may be graves on the site of Tropicana Field.
Unmarked graves have been found throughout the years
but a recent ground-penetrating survey shows there may be ten more graves beneath the Trop
This survey is bringing the issue back to the forefront of people's minds

this week's episode clearly had other ideas
Another of these moments saw Ellie (Bella Ramsey) visiting the grave of Joel (Pedro Pascal)
and marking the moment with a gesture that links back to Season 1
After sneaking out of Jackson with Dina (Isabela Merced) to track down Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her crew
the pair stop at the graveyard 10 miles south of Jackson that Tommy told Ellie about earlier in the episode
In the morning sunlight Ellie finds Joel's grave
which reads "Beloved brother and father." She crouches
and sprinkles some coffee beans onto the soil
The coffee beans clearly represent something important to her
but given that it's been a while since Season 1 aired
you'd be forgiven for forgetting exactly why
The answer lies in Season 1, episode 4, and one of the many formative bonding moments in Joel and Ellie's relationship
episode 4 sees Joel and Ellie heading cross country to Kansas City
Ellie is woken by the rattling of liquid bubbling in a pot
"Is that seriously what those Starbucks in the QZ used to sell?"
theirs was a lot fresher than what Bill saved up
"Smells like...burned shit," is Ellie's blunt feedback
purposeful slurp before telling Ellie to keep her eyes on the map
Although the many tragedies the pair went through together solidified their bond
it's these light-hearted moments that Ellie clearly remembers with the most fondness

A 1936 map shows the location of a possible Civil War mass grave (circled in yellow)
A historical marker and military-style headstones honor the victims of the Simpsonville massacre
Archaeologists have identified two potential mass graves of Black Union soldiers who were targeted by Confederate guerrillas in the Civil War
Archaeologists believe they have found two mass graves of Black Union soldiers in Kentucky thanks to remote sensing techniques and the dogged work of a local historian
allowing them to tell the story of a forgotten Civil War tragedy
a Union Army depot where many enslaved men enlisted in order to be freed
The soldiers there had been driving 900 head of cattle toward Louisville as part of the Union supply chain when
they were attacked by better-armed Confederate guerrillas
These guerrilla troops — often called bushwhackers — generally included men who wanted to fight outside the confines of the military by surprising
ambushing and killing troops rather than following the rules of war
"Most of the 22 men were shot in the back while fleeing
"Guerrillas definitely targeted them because they were Black," Mink told Live Science
local newspaper coverage of this event was minimal
with reports that Simpsonville residents buried the bodies in a trench
But no formal record of the burial site was made
and the Union burial commission did not attempt to locate the soldiers' bodies after the war
Related: Remains of 4 Confederate soldiers, amputated legs and gold coins found at a Civil War battlefield in Virginia
He joined forces with Mink and his colleagues in the search for the grave in 2008
when they investigated a local African American cemetery
Their research is not yet published in a peer-reviewed journal
But a big break in the cold case came in the fall of 2023
when Miller found a single 1936 map that clearly marked a Civil War burial mound in what is now the field of a soybean farmer
The farmer confirmed the researchers' suspicions: His father and grandfather had always told him there were Civil War soldiers buried on their property
Mink and his team then launched a geophysical study of the land in December 2023
using a drone-mounted magnetometer to scan underneath the ground for metallic objects like bullets or belt buckles and terrestrial ground-penetrating radar to search for the location of the mass grave
As the archaeologists analyzed the data they had gathered
they zeroed in on one anomaly that was about 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep
13 feet (4 m) wide and 65.6 feet (20 m) long
which is "consistent with a mass grave," Mink said in the presentation
"There's a possibility that there may be two mass graves because
14 were instantly killed and were buried immediately." The remaining soldiers were wounded and died later and then may have been buried in a second grave
Because the landowner has a crop of soybeans currently growing in the field
the team plans to dig a shallow trench this fall to find conclusive evidence of the graves
and then we decide what our next steps forward are," Mink said
including consulting with the descendant community

The Simpsonville massacre is a story of injustice
Headstones have been made by Kentucky's Shelby County Historical Society with the names of the USCC soldiers who were targeted by Confederate guerrillas
and the Commonwealth of Kentucky has erected a historical marker in remembrance of the massacre
these men will be removed and reburied with full military honors at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery
where many of their other comrades are buried," Mink said

eight identified areas of interest and nine areas where graves could’ve been removed
Researchers also reviewed death certificates
obituaries and other historical documents to identify 27 people by name who were buried there
Petersburg began looking into those sites five years ago for the planned redevelopment of the Trop
beginning with staff research followed by a survey using radar done by July 2021
The second and latest survey was completed in November
But the 83-page report didn’t come to light until St
Petersburg City Council member Corey Givens kept asking about it
council members unanimously approved holding a meeting to discuss the findings and recommendations of the survey
“The city’s known for over five months and they’ve kept the report on the backburner
“The discussions have been so focused on baseball and not focusing on history that we’ve allowed this to get forgotten.”
“It’s always been a priority for us,” Welch said. “It’s just a matter of us taking the lead on it now.”
There were three cemeteries west of the Trop: Oaklawn Cemetery, Moffett Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery. Oaklawn Cemetery was founded as a White cemetery, Evergreen Cemetery was a Black cemetery and Moffett Cemetery, which predated the other two by almost 20 years, appears to have served both communities.
The latter two cemeteries are likely located under what is now Fifth Avenue South and Interstate 175. Because of redevelopment plans and limited access because of the interstate, Oaklawn was studied first because it lies within one parcel with one property owner.
Historical maps and plats pinpoint the Oaklawn cemetery as located at Lot 1 and the eastern part of Lot 2 at the Trop. Research done by Stantec, the city’s consultant, identified 112 burials there including 108 white individuals and four Black individuals. Deeds from Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties show that 113 lots were officially sold in that cemetery.
Researchers found 35 sales of those lots between 1906 and 1926 while noting that due to past record-keeping practices, they likely do not have a comprehensive list. The majority of those sold lots, whether linked to a deceased person or not, are clustered in the northeast part of Lot 1.

There were 13 sold lots along the southern edge of Lot 1 near Fifth Avenue South. That’s where Stantec’s results found more possible graves.
“Most likely to be missing are those from marginalized communities, people with less socio-economic means, and infants or children,” the report read. “However, these death records for all three cemeteries paint a picture, even if it is incomplete, of the burial patterns and various communities who used each cemetery.”
Stantec noted that many tree roots and buried utility lines, storm drains, and electrical conduits for parking lot lights were in the way and made it hard to discern possible graves or activity. Construction began on the Royal Court Apartments, built on Oaklawn, in 1949.
Apartments were also built atop Evergreen and Moffett cemeteries, though they were demolished to build I-175. Stantec’s report said construction workers building the interstate reportedly found a skull and vertebrae. Leg and arm bones were discovered in a separate incident the same year.
“However, no official archaeological investigations were conducted,” the report read.
Stantec recommended testing certain areas to confirm the presence of human remains. But the firm also warned that no archaeological work should be done without first consulting with potential descendants and stakeholder groups connected to Oaklawn Cemetery. Welch said the city will move forward with those recommendations.

Sam Montano visited what he believed to be his grandmother's grave in La Junta
only to discover that her remains might not be there at all
City officials informed Montano that the plot could be empty or occupied by someone else
leaving the whereabouts of his grandmother

where several of his family members are buried
Montano buried his mother's cremains in September of 2023
across from his grandmother's headstone
paying the city cemetery $155 for the burial
revealing that the city had no idea where his grandmother's remains were
"There might be no one in that cemetery plot," Harris said
An email from the city's private attorney confirmed the uncertainty
"The city does not know where she is buried and has no way of determining that." Additionally
Montano's mother was buried in a plot owned by another family
sharing the same last name as his grandmother
"The city has no idea where this guy's grandma is," Hart said
acknowledging his short tenure in the position
A judge has since ruled that the city must pay to remove and transfer Bessie and Flo's headstones and Flo's cremains to Montano
the location of Bessie Zamora's remains remains unknown
"There is no price tag over someone's memories
their loved ones or their faith," Montano said
"All of those have been trampled on by the city of La Junta

At least 13 dead in clashes between Sunnis and Druze in Damascus suburb
While the new Syrian government continues to strive for international recognition and sanctions relief
two incidents in recent days have shone a spotlight on the struggles of the leadership
most of which was part of the former Islamist terror group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
to rein in the Islamist forces in the country
Among the new government’s most important promises has been the protection of minorities
However, this was already called into serious question in March, when regime supporters and security forces rounded up and executed rebels and civilians in the majority-Alawite coastal provinces
Some 1,700 civilians were killed in the clashes
according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR)
Druze leaders strongly protested after over a dozen people were reportedly killed in clashes the preceding evening
“Heavy clashes erupted in Jaramana after security forces and affiliated gunmen stormed” some areas of the Damascus suburb which is mainly populated by Druze and Christians
The clashes followed “the circulation of an audio recording
containing religious insults,” the monitor added

wrote that “a video of a Druze man mocking the Prophet Mohammed went viral in Syria
it triggered an angry online backlash & calls for public decency
gunmen from the nearby Sunni towns converged on Jaramana
An interior ministry spokesman claimed that two members of the newly established General Security Service
He further alleged that groups of civilians were protesting against the recording when they came under fire from Druze groups
there was also an attempt by extremist militants to enter the area of the Druze mountain in the Suweida province to avenge the calls against the Prophet
Jaramana's Druze religious leadership on Tuesday condemned “the unjustified armed attack” that “targeted innocent civilians and terrorized” residents
They stressed that the Syrian authorities bore “full responsibility for the incident and for any further developments or worsening of the crisis.”
Israel has vowed to protect Syria’s Druze population
There was no immediate Israeli comment on the incident
The town of Jaramana has already once been the particular focus of Israel’s attention when the government publicly instructed the Israel Defense Forces to defend the town amid previous clashes
We are committed to our Druze brothers in Israel to do everything to prevent harm to their Druze brothers in Syria
and we will take all necessary steps to maintain their security," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement in March
The clashes in Jaramana followed another case of the Syrian government failing to safeguard minorities

The group expressed its “deep shock and sadness” over the vandalization

2025 9:07 PM EDTThe latest episode of The Last Of Us sees Ellie (Bella Ramsey) grappling with the fallout from (SPOILER ALERT) Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) death
one way Bella memorializes Pedro Pascal’s character may raise a few questions
coffee is seen as a luxury commodity in the wake of the Cordyceps infection
Whenever Ellie and Joel were in a place with a coffee pot or that used to sell the beverage
the latter would often make a comment about how he misses coffee
In season two’s second episode, Joel (Pedro Pascal) is killed by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever)
who seeks revenge for the death of her father—the surgeon Joel killed at the end of Season 1 to save Ellie (Bella Ramsey)
The doctor had planned to operate on Ellie in hopes of creating a cure for the Cordyceps plague
though the procedure would have cost Ellie her life
The Last Of Us co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin is not worried it will tank ratings
Season 2 of The Last Of Us is currently airing on HBO.

The latest episode also introduces viewers to the Seraphites
Spoilers ahead for “The Last of Us” Season 2
By now, the cat’s out of the bag. “The Last of Us” has killed off Pedro Pascal’s Joel
And the rest of this season will chronicle Ellie (Bella Ramsey)
Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and the rest of Jackson as they try to cope with that loss
one of the ways Ellie remembers her late father figure may be a bit confusing to fans who’ve only watched the show
Here’s what those coffee beans mean and who exactly the mysterious Seraphites are
Coffee plays a bigger role in the games than in the show
when Joel and Ellie are in a place that has a coffee pot or used to sell coffee
Joel will make a comment about missing it since the beverage has become a luxury after the Cordyceps infection
Ellie leaving beans on Joel’s grave is a sign of respect to her late father figure
it’s a touching and personal tribute that calls back to happy memories with Joel
Every post-apocalyptic world needs its own cult
and that’s what the Seraphites are in “The Last of Us.” After the Cordyceps outbreak
the Seraphite Prophet had a vision and told people that there could be a utopia in this new world
becoming a martyr after she was captured and killed by W.L.F.
also known as the Washington Liberation Front
that’s Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) sect
the Prophet (who was unnamed in the games) told her followers that they could find utopia in this new and terrifying world by denouncing physical pleasure and modern technology
becoming more violent and encouraging male members to take many wives
The Seraphites are often at war with W.L.F
with the members of the militia organization often insultingly calling them “Scars.” That’s the complex hell Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) are walking into as they enter Seattle
Ellie and Dina don’t interact with the Seraphites too often aside from occasionally having to kill a camp of them
But the religious cult plays a major role in Abby’s storyline
“The Last of Us” Season 2 airs Sundays on HBO and Max

Spoiler alert: This story discusses "The Conners" April 23 series finale
"The Conners" rose from the ashes that fall
with Roseanne's TV absence explained by an accidental opioid overdose
the major question going into the two-episode series finale (now streaming on Hulu) remained: Would Roseanne somehow show up
"I'm sure there were a lot of fans who would like to have seen it," says executive producer Bruce Helford
who also executive-produced five seasons of "Roseanne," including the short-lived revival
the series finale is primarily devoted to Roseanne Conner
which includes a graveside family farewell
"She's not there physically," says Helford
"But we wanted to honor something that she really gave birth to and cared for
The audience certainly loved her and her family."
It's the middle-class family that has picked up the comedic and dramatic load. John Goodman, 72, who has lost 200 pounds since his "Roseanne" heyday as loving husband Dan Conner
anchors the cast with Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne's sister Jackie)
and Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson (grown daughters Darlene and Becky

but a payout check opened at Roseanne's grave"Roseanne" was initially revived as a do-over of the fan-loathed Season 9
which saw Dan die and the Conners win the lottery
"Our whole mission to start this thing was to undo that," Helford says
The finale features Dan's passionate support of his dead wife during a deposition for a lawsuit against the opioid company
The entire family meets at Roseanne's grave to open the resulting settlement payment
"We wanted to stay true to what's really happening in the legal system," says Helford
and shows that money does not create happiness
Each family member gives a grave farewell to Roseanne's cemetery marker

"I think we did better than that." Dan also says he's "cool" if Roseanne has met another love
Roseanne is Dan's 'true love,' even if he's married to LouiseBefore starting "The Conners," Goodman told Helford he didn't want Dan to quickly enter a new relationship
he remarried high school classmate Louise Goldufski ("Married...with Children" star Katey Sagal)
The couple shows genuine love and devotion
But Dan's deposition in the finale makes clear that Roseanne was "the love of my life."
"He declares that in front of Louise," Helford says
The $700 is enough to have the entire family over for a pizza party around the family's famed couch and afghan

tearing up at the door with "Good night." Goranson and Gilbert follow with tearful exits that are deeper than a pizza-party ending
"That was 'goodbye' forever," Helford says
So that's the actual people saying goodbye

'The Conners' ends with 'Roseanne' nostalgia
but without RoseanneThe episode concludes with big-hair vintage clips of the characters from "Roseanne." Barr is noticeably missing
But the moment shows how the core "Conners" crew have been together for nearly four decades
"These actors have been friends for 37 years
playing these characters for 15 of these years," says Helford
Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson grew up on this show
Just seeing the changes in everyone and the passage of time shows how momentous this is
'Roseanne' was a very big thing in people's lives
