By Mark Alan Hewitt
This year marks the centennial of the first edition of Vers Une Architecture
Though a new English translation appeared in 2007 to much acclaim
most other practicing architects read the first English edition that appeared in 1928
Comparing the three editions is instructive
particularly in one crucial respect: the insertion of the word “new” in the title
The book wasn’t really about new architecture
because very little of it showed buildings in the International Style
it was in many respects a clever diatribe intended to convince Europeans that they had no choice but to renounce every kind of architecture that had been built before the Great War and begin anew
It was remarkably successful in fulfilling that aim
When Charles Eduard Jeanneret returned to Paris in 1917
working as a teacher and designing a house for his parents at Chaux-le-Fonds
he met the painter Amedée Ozenfant through his former employer
and began a close relationship that produced not only paintings but polemical writings
The most important product of their collaboration was undoubtedly the journal L’Esprit Nouveau
which began publication in 1919 and ceased in 1925
the year of the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs
It was intended to be a plea for the transformation of Cubism into a universal movement in the plastic arts
but extended its reach to urbanism and architecture
Essays from the magazine appeared in Vers Une Architecture without attribution to Ozenfant
angering him and provoking a split between the two friends
It would not be the last time the ambitious young firebrand would use others in pursuit of fame
Only in 1922 had the young Swiss painter and entrepreneur opened an architectural office with his cousin Pierre and begun to refer to himself as a heroic “dark crow” among the avant-garde
He had already published extensively and knew his way around the printers in the city
He was a talented graphic designer with a gift for apocalyptic prose in the style of an American evangelist
Hanno-Walter Kruft saw through the cult-like rhetoric when he argued that Le Corbusier “convinced himself with almost willful determination that he was destined for the role of tragic revolutionary
a martyr come to redeem the world—by architecture.” Whatever architecture was standing after the conflagration of 1914-1919 was like an old religion: worthless and out of date
His prose was strategic in that it brought the frustrated architect (a man out of step with his bourgeois milieu) along as a fellow proletarian in a march forward
the argument repeated itself throughout 200 well-illustrated
well-designed pages in stark black and white
with the expansion of sentences in each iteration
Vers Une Architecture answered a call for the complete redesign of society
as critics of the Modern Movement have proved many times over
By insisting that the crises brought on by war and economic privation in Europe could be “ameliorated” only with his own radical building types and urban schemes
Le Corbusier leaped into the void with a parachute he saw as the only savior for his new nation (he became a French citizen during the 1920s)
he increased the hyperbole as he chastised every social institution for its part in creating the wasteland experienced by the working class
notre organisation sociale n’a rien de pret qui puisse y répondre” (“our society has nothing ready that can answer that”)
the real estate industry—no quarter of society escaped his wrath
Echoing Henry Provensal’s L’art de demain of 1904
Le Corbusier insisted that modern art was the ultimate expression of man’s new place in the world and would lead him out of the wilderness of naïve naturalism
A History of Architectural Theory from Vitruvius to the Present [London
Kruft also points to Edward Schure’s Les grandes initiés [1906] and Erest Renan’s Life of Jesus as sources for Le Corbusier’s messianic zeal.) No longer bound by the farm
modern man was free to express himself and pursue a life of enlightened leisure
Machines were the answer to his age-old problems of hard labor with little to show for it
he pulled imagery from the profane to goad his readers into action
but one that Jacques Tati’s film character
The words he chose were those of base animals
of “la bete humaine.” Society was bound in a harness of history
Chastising even his avant-garde revolutionaries
he asked why they did not embrace a new cadre of intellectuals who were up to date with technological advances as he was
whose writings on these subjects preceded his
Le Corbusier was an evangelical leader who mixed Calvinist logic with Catholic piety and passion
His illustrations and prophetic style made him the ideal exponent of a machine aesthetic
he had an English translator who could render that style effectively: Frederick Etchells (1886-1973)
there were no engineers in the modern sense before the mid-19th century
when industrial assemblies required a new kind of design intelligence
Corbu wanted all the trappings of craft and handwork removed from design
industrial “objets types” similar to automobiles and planes be designed by architects
he even railed against the studied compositions of Beaux-Arts painters
though he used their techniques everywhere in his work
But it was contempt for the past that burned most fiercely among all the polemics in the book
Though he himself learned lessons from Rome and the Parthenon
He viewed every extant building as a lesson in how not to make functional
The French word “vers” has several meanings but can also be used as a trope on similar Latin roots
Usually it refers to being “near” something
it is a vector pointing “toward” something—in this case
It can also mean “forward” or the opposite of “backward,” but only in cases like this one
as the Latin verso is used for the reverse sides of paper in printing or drawing
as used in the English word “verisimilitude,” it can also mean real or true
And it can be a homonym for “verse” in the French as in English
Corbu suggests that his book presents a case for seeing architecture in several different ways and is careful to indicate that his new definitions do not constitute a complete description of the architecture that he proposes will take the place of “old” or out-of-date building technologies
Hence the falsely modest use of “toward/almost” instead of a bolder assertion that his designs represented a full “treatise” on how to design and build in the future
That is also part of the book’s allure—other architects used “toward” to float their incomplete proposals in the following decades
By pointing away from everything in the past
Le Corbusier focused our attention on the wrong things
things that have pushed us toward the destruction of our planet
not merely away from failed solutions or bourgeois excesses in old ways of building
As bold and attractive to war-weary Europeans as International Style modernism became in its heyday
it could not answer the complex needs of the information age
Complete rejection of every past building tradition
and construction system is untenable if we are to adapt our existing environment to climate change and energy shortages
Make no mistake about it: Le Corbusier’s invective against the past was every bit as powerful and persuasive in its time as his bold architecture
Though we may well continue to admire his achievements as a designer
there is no reason to accept his ideas about society
and the magnificent monuments of our ancestors
Turning away from them as we did for nearly a century cost us dearly

Corrigendum: Positive Psychology Micro-Coaching Intervention: Effects on Psychological Capital and Goal-Related Self-Efficacy
Positive Psychological Coaching is receiving increasing attention within the organizational field because of its potential benefits for employees’ development and well-being (Passmore and Oades, 2014)
The main aim of this study was to test the impact of a Positive Psychological Micro-Coaching program on non-executive workers’ psychological capital
and analyze how goal-related self-efficacy predicts goal attainment during the coaching process
60 non-executive employees (35 in the experimental group and 25 in the waiting-list control group) from an automotive industry company participated in a Positive Psychological Micro-Coaching program over a period of 5 weeks
The intervention was grounded in the strengths-based approach and focused on setting a specific goal for personal and professional growth
and 4-month follow up measurements were taken to assess the impact on the study variables
Our results reveal that psychological capital increased significantly at post and follow-up times compared to baseline levels
results confirmed that goal-related self-efficacy predicted goal attainment during the micro-coaching process
Practical implications suggest that short-term positive psychological coaching is a valuable method for developing personal resources
such as psychological capital and to facilitate the goal achievement in non-executive employees
studying the influence of goal-related self-efficacy represents a step forward in further understanding the role of personal resources in the effectiveness of the coaching process
In view of the world’s uncertainty and challenge
handling and overcoming life’s adversities is necessary to strengthen
even positively transform one’s personal resources
An approach to strengths developed by Linley (2008) suggests that strengths consist on the ability to think, feel, and behave in ways that allow full and optimal functioning in the pursuit of desirable and valuable results (Linley and Harrington, 2006). In the workplace environment, employees who make a deliberate effort to apply strengths on their daily work are more productive, successful, and happy (Miglianico et al., 2020)
Some interventions indicate that the use of personal resources for personal and professional success is an efficient organizational strategy to promote beneficial outcomes. For example, Meyers and van Woerkom (2017) observed that a brief strengths intervention increased employees’ positive affect and PsyCap by identifying and developing strengths and their use in the work context
more studies with controlled and longitudinal designs are needed to broaden and build on the effects of PPMC on work-related outcomes
and the role of self-efficacy in achieving goals during the process
considering the key role of these variables in a coaching process
this study aims to contribute to the research on the impact of a PPMC program on PsyCap and the relationship between self-efficacy and goal attainment in the coaching process
Luthans et al. (2007b) define PsyCap as
An individual’s positive psychological state of development
characterized by: (1) having confidence (self-efficacy) to take on and put in the necessary effort to succeed at challenging tasks; (2) making a positive attribution (optimism) about succeeding now and in the future; (3) persevering toward goals and
redirecting paths to goals (hope) in order to succeed; and (4) when beset by problems and adversity
sustaining and bouncing back and even beyond (resiliency) to attain success
it is necessary to evaluate and verify the durability of the positive effects produced on PsyCap
Hypothesis 1: Participants will increase their levels of PsyCap in Post time (after the intervention) for the Experimental group (EX) compared to Pre time (before the intervention)
and compared to a Waiting List-control group (WL)
participants will report higher scores on PsyCap in Post time and 4 months after finishing the intervention (4-month follow-up; FUP) compared to Pre time (before the intervention)
and considering the whole intervention group
Given the relationship between these two concepts
specific self-efficacy for achieving goals will lead to greater progress in goal attainment
Hypothesis 2: Goal-related self-efficacy will predict goal attainment in the PPMC process
The sample for this study was drawn from a multinational automotive industry company located in Spain
Seventy-six employees who hold technical and engineering positions with non-supervisory or non-executive functions received an invitation to participate in a short-term strengths-based micro-coaching program
a total of 60 participants (79%) were involved in this research project: 35 participants divided into six groups that took part simultaneously and made up the experimental condition (EX group)
and 25 participants divided into three groups that made up the waiting-list condition (WL group) as untreated comparisons in the study
Participants’ mean age was 36 years (SD = 7.5)
82% of participants had a tenured contract
and the average length of time working in the company was 8.6 years (SD = 8.5)
and there was no extra financial incentive for their participation
All participants gave their written informed consent to release their personal data for scientific research purposes
A degree of attrition was expected due to the longitudinal design of this study and the company’s casuistry
Due to unforeseen work-related and personal events
four employees did not complete the intervention program
a total of 56 (93%) participants completed the program and responded to a post-intervention questionnaire
and 52 (87%) responded to the FUP questionnaire
the WL groups initiated the intervention shortly after the EX groups finished the coaching sessions (after the T2 evaluation)
instead of waiting until the completion of the FUP questionnaires
The intervention was called the “Strengths-based micro-coaching program,” and it was designed for different purposes: (1) to present and provide feedback on the results of self-assessments of participants’ positive psychological resources (i.e.
performance); and (2) to facilitate goal attainment by establishing an action plan based on the use of personal strengths
In a previous study (Peláez et al., 2020)
the authors explored the impact of this particular intervention program on work engagement and job performance
these two outcome variables were not included in the present study
This previous intervention program was extended over the course of 6 weeks and divided into a 2-hour group session and three individual coaching sessions
The intervention was delivered by four professional psychologists external to the organization with specific coaching and positive psychology expertise
They also participated in two group supervision sessions (one at the beginning and the second one in the middle of the process) with an experienced professional in this subject
All four coaches had to follow a guideline (i.e.
and comparable information regarding the main issues on the coaching process
each coach had to register the relevant points of the session based on the protocol
This procedure ensured that the results were based on the same approach
The present study is related to the Peláez et al. (2020) study and has the same design and sample
We attempt to analyze the effectiveness of a PPMC program in increasing work-related variables (i.e.
study the relationship between goal-related self-efficacy and goal attainment
and provide further evidence reinforcing its value and validity
researchers were assisted by the manager of the plant in order to identify employees’ need to respond to high levels of job demands and reach higher performance goals
employees were informed about the characteristics of the study
and the confidentiality of their responses
according to the European data regulation standards
the research adhered to ethical principles and standards approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University
Participants were not randomly allocated to either the EX group or the WL group because their assignment depended on their availability
The participants could choose between the two groups through registering in a template sheet
EX: experimental group; WL: waiting list-control group; Pre-test: pre-assessment; Post-test: post-assessment; FUP-test: follow up-assessment; Tl: time 1; T2: time 2
Figure 2. Intervention program model based on the RE-GROW model (Grant, 2011b)
participants received a short theoretical presentation on positive psychology
the participants received an individual report and feedback on their self-assessment
providing a starting point and enhancing awareness of their personal resources
each coachee established a specific goal to focus on
and a working guide was offered that included a workbook
and instructions for coaching activities and a bibliography
The program continued with 2 weekly 90-min individual micro-coaching sessions that mainly consisted of reporting the levels of goal-related self-efficacy
defining the goal and the action plan for achieving it
the participants used their character strengths to reach the established goal
in the “R” of the GROW model
the current status and personal strengths available to reach the desired status (goal) were identified
followed by a reflection on participants’ abilities
the individuals developed and initiated an action plan
participants worked on developing the plan
the coach helped the coachee to evaluate and adjust the goal or actions in order to obtain better results
Positive Psychological Micro-Coaching sessions framework
Psychological capital was measured with the adapted version(Azanza et al., 2014) of the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ; Luthans et al., 2007a)
The PCQ items were rated on a six-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (”strongly disagree”) to 6 (”strongly agree”)
PCQ obtained a coefficient of 0.809 for T1
and 0.83 for T3 for the alpha Cronbach value
which means that this questionnaire can measure psychological capital consistently
goal attainment was assessed by asking the participants to rate their degree of success in attaining the goal through a percentage scale (example item: “What percentage of your goal have you achieved at this moment?”) from 0% (no attainment) to 100% (total attainment)
Goal attainment scores were calculated by transforming percentages to scales from 1 to 10
This variable was measured in the 60-min final follow-up session
Descriptive data analyses were calculated to test the relationships between the study variables using the SPSS 25.0 statistical program
In order to examine the effects of the intervention program
analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a 2 × 2 repeated measures design was conducted to analyze differences between-subjects factor (group: EX and WL) and within-subjects factor (time: T1; T2)
While T1 refers to the first pre-intervention test for both EX and WL
T2 refers to the post-intervention test for EX and to the second pre-intervention test for WL
just before this second group started the intervention
t-tests for related samples were performed to test for differences between Pre and Post times and Pre and FUP times considering the whole intervention group (EX and WL group)
once the WL group had finished the intervention
Moreover, following Cohen (1988)
eta squared in the repeated-measures ANOVA and Cohen’s d as a measure of the effect size on t-tests for related samples were estimated (small effect = 0.01–0.03; moderate or intermediate effect = 0.03–0.05; large effect = 0.05)
A significance level of 0.05 was established for all tests
simple linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the specific link between the research variables (goal-related self-efficacy) at Pre time and the outcome variables (goal attainment) at Post time
Dependent variable for each time factor (T1
Next, paired-sample t-tests for the whole intervention group were performed to compare Pre and Post and Pre and FUP times (see Table 2)
Results showed significantly higher levels of PsyCap at Post [t(53) = −5.22 p < 0.001
and FUP [t(46) = −5.65 p < 0.001
These findings suggest that the intervention had a positive impact on the development of the participants’ PsyCap
and that these effects remained high across time
Means and t-test on PsyCap for the whole group
Regression analyses results for work-related self-efficacy as predictor of goal attainment
The effect of the non-executive PPMC program on PsyCap has not been previously investigated
and so these findings provide new scientific evidence in this regard
Moreover, results from this research contribute to the literature on coaching psychology by demonstrating that micro-coaching can be a useful positive intervention to improve optimal organizational functioning. Therefore, the study results are consistent with previous research showing that even if the number of coaching sessions is small, coaching can be successful (Theeboom et al., 2013; Peláez et al., 2020)
The reason short-term coaching led to successful outcomes could be that the intervention focuses on developing specific skills and goals in a relatively brief period of time
the findings strengthen the literature on empirical control trial studies with a longitudinal design
considering the effect of PPMC on work-related outcomes (i.e.
and the role of self-efficacy in goal attainment
and therefore should be taken into account in the coaching process
Therefore, coaching provides opportunities not only to develop abilities and internalize them in everyday life (Evers et al., 2006), but also to increase the effectiveness of coachees’ functioning and work performance even when the environment is challenging. Workplace coaching needs to be agile, flexible, and easily integrated into the organization (Grant, 2016)
can serve as an important tool that can facilitate significant positive organizational change to address the problems that contemporary companies are experiencing
It is a short-term interaction designed to obtain long-term benefits
some limitations of this study must be recognized
participants were not assigned randomly to either the EX or the WL group because the allocation depended on the participants’ availability and the organization’s priorities
the findings of the t-test analysis between the groups did not show any significant difference in the outcome variable (PsyCap) at T1 (before the intervention)
the sample was small and very specific; therefore
future investigations should examine the effect of this intervention in other sectors or companies and extend the sample in order to contrast the results
replications are welcome in order to discover the benefits of the intervention based on its positive effects in other sectors
the comparison of the EX and WL groups at FUP was not possible because the WL group started the intervention shortly after the EX group finished it
we found valuable results by comparing the whole intervention group across time (before
Future studies should consider adjusting the research design in order to compare the two conditions at this evaluation time
we highlight the importance of a FUP evaluation to ensure the maintenance of the results over time and the use of objective or multisource ratings of outcome variables and the results
Fourth, the self-efficacy and goal attainment measurements based on single-item scales are sensitive to bias and error. Additionally, the changes of self-efficacy and goal attainment were not possible to analyze since they were measured only once. Even so, our results were positive and congruent with previous research. However, the use of the Goal Attainment Scaling and the Self-efficacy Scale (Chen et al., 2001) should be considered in future studies for more accuracy
as well as evaluating the variables in different times in order to examine changes
even though positive and significant effects of PPMC were found on PsyCap and in the connection between goal-related self-efficacy and goal attainment
future research should consider focusing on specific factors in the effectiveness of coaching (e.g.
commitment to the process) and on the analysis of the links between self-efficacy
goal attainment and changes on the outcome variable (PsyCap)
Our study has shown that short-term coaching can be successful
a comparison of short-term and long-term interventions in future research would be very useful
this study provides relevant information for both researchers and professionals
the results offer evidence about the effects of a Positive Psychological Micro-Coaching intervention on psychological capital and the predictability of goal-related self-efficacy on goal attainment during the coaching process
The present study presents original data indicating that short-term sessions are indeed effective in enhancing personal resources (i.e.
PsyCap) and that on average participants reported medium-high percentage of attainment of their established goals
It also demonstrates that workplace coaching can increase PsyCap in non-executive workers
Although the effects of the intervention cannot be generalized
and comparisons of EX-WL at FUP were not possible
the encouraging results suggest that future studies should include stronger designs (i.e.
this research represents a significant development from an operational point of view because it provides professionals with an innovative and replicable intervention that can be adapted and implemented across a wide range of organizations
The findings highlight the strategic value of providing personal growth opportunities that can help employees to develop their skills to handle challenging circumstances and cope with difficulties
contribute to successful organizational outcomes

The background: Corbu's mainman Jonathan Graves is a bit of a dreamer
"intense and lucid dreams" since he was a boy
and they've grown in meaning as he's got older
he finds it increasingly hard distinguishing from his waking and dream states
"The world you experience when you're dreaming is physically real in some way," he says
waking consciousness – one where time doesn't exist and dead relatives can hang out with you."
What he just said there makes sense when you hear Corbu's music - it's dreamy but with an eerie undertow you might expect from someone who hangs out in dream-land with expired family members
You can't tell much from the fact that Graves
who teaches music to kids when he's not making music for adults
designer and painter who is also said to be one of the pioneers of modern architecture
we've seen him referred to twice as an "archi-texturalist" so someone likes the idea of him bringing architectural theory to bear on the areas of sound construction and textural invention
Reading on mobile? Click here to listen
Turns out he does approach sound in an interesting - and interested - way
breaking the sample down into smaller pieces
"Using the same rationale as sampling a drum beat or a vocal melody," explains Graves
"we can grab a movie sound with all of its noisy film grain and strange imperfections and make something musical with it." The best example of a sample that he cites is the bit from Star Wars where Luke Skywalker practises his lightsabre technique
plus the knowledge that Graves likes "bright
vivid colours that look like they've aged and faded away
sort of does and doesn't enhance one's enjoyment of Corbu's music
Graves has talked about wanting Corbu to be like Boards Of Canada circa Geogaddi
while comparisons have been drawn with Panda Bear and Animal Collective in general
The songs are influenced by Graves's childhood love of nature and science fiction
irreligious spirituality that comes from being bombarded with the Beatles' All You Need Is Love as a kid
with pastel shades of Slowdive on Sunwaves
the opening track on their We Are Sound EP
their most conventional pop-rock moment to date
Believe the Lie is harmonically very pretty and Fields and Flowers signals a departure into slow R&B jam territory
But the clicks and the sound of children's laughter sustain the mood and the faded-memory theme
Zane Lowe apparently went gaga when he heard We Are Sound
declaring it "really really really really really really good!" We'd have left it at five "reallys" but he's not miles wide of the mark
The buzz: "A tug on the heartstrings played with only the most beautiful caress."
The truth: Meet Brooklyn's premier movie-sampling dreampoppers
What to buy: The We Are Sound EP is released on 12 May by 3beat

The earlier version said "Graves and his main musical ally in the band
have talked about wanting Corbu to be like Boards Of Canada circa Geogaddi
and that the band's "songs are influenced by Graves and Murphy's childhood love of nature and science fiction"
These references confused current band member Brian Murphy with former band member Brian Noll
The band says Jonathan Graves does not have a "main musical ally"; all members contribute to the band
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with
Given rolling news broadcasts mimic nightmares every single day at the moment
you’d be hard pushed to find someone not seeking escape in 2016
An even tougher task is finding musicians who choose this as their motive while shunning the rulebook
New York group Corbu’s ‘Crayon Soul’ album does just this
Mixed by Dave Fridmann (behind the desk for fellow escapists Tame Impala
this record builds and boards its own starliner
but across these songs stop-off at every planet imaginable
like a hyperactive kid trying to reach all the Pokémon Go stops
We’re very excited to be streaming Corbu’s new track ‘Better Better Off’ as today’s Neu Pick
Get to know Corbu below in our Neu interview with Jonathan Graves
it’s about resisting change and allowing change to happen
There’s a Simpsons episode where Homer eats “Guatemalen Insanity Peppers” at a chili cook-off
and goes into a deep hallucination where a coyote tells him he needs to find his soulmate
my soulmate is Marge!” The coyote just says
“Is she?” and then he wakes up
We all get “stuck” with things that make us unhappy - jobs
ways of thinking - because we’re too scared to find out what would happen if we let them go
The end of the song is a little nudge to walk away and try something new: “All the things that could be happening / Maybe you could be happy.”
"We wanted to make an album that was one continuous piece
like 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'In Rainbows'."
We wanted to make an album that was one continuous piece
like ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ or ‘In Rainbows’
Listening to my favourite albums feels like sitting down to watch a movie
and I think ‘Crayon Soul’ asks to be listened to in that way - front-to-back
It’s my attempt to make a proper “space” record before I’m dead
There’s a tension with the narrator that evolves as the record goes on
and you hit these moments where something breaks open
and gets closer and closer until you finally reach him.Overall
Crayon Soul is a “trip,” in all meanings of the word
It’s always strange and usually pretty
but that leads you somewhere nice that you haven’t been before
You feel like you’ve earned your way there
Working with Dave was incredible, with him as an engineer and as a person. Tarbox is a big house in the middle of the woods
I think the kitchen is representative of the whole place; it’s a normal American kitchen
decorated like the houses we grew up in… and then along the stairs is a crazy
neon orange art wall Wayne Coyne made with Dave’s kids
It’s those juxtapositions of “This is cozy and normal
no big deal,” and “All of your favourite things were made in this room,” that give the house its vibe
It’s like Christmas every time he finishes a mix
walking into the room and knowing you’re going to hear his version of your song for the first time
we all agreed that a song needed one more layer
So Dave and I went to different corners of the studio and performed new parts
which ended up as a perfect call-and-response
even though we couldn’t hear what each other was doing
We also got to hang out with his family a lot
and his son Mike helped me figure out the album artwork
The whole thing was hyper-real and like a dream at the same time
My biggest inspiration has always been the full sensory experience of dreaming
mythological experiences every night and no one thinks much of it
and have to wake up at 5 am to record all the parts before they go away
I’ve been attracted to surrealism and anything to do with space/the future since I was little
There’s a set of space colony paintings NASA commissioned in the 70s that we were obsessed with - those and some illustrations by Syd Meade were the first reference points for the album
we wanted it to “look” like those images
Everything right now is about our live show
We’re going on bigger tours for the first time and playing Austin City Limits in September
so it’s really about how to translate what we are into all these different environments
We would love to come to the UK in the fall
the next album already has the beginnings of its own identity
I feel like I’m not allowed to focus on it yet with everything else going on
I sneak away and work on it when everyone else is asleep

masahiko sato of the local firm architect show has designed H house for a young family in the green metropolis of fukuoka
affectionately known as ‘race round the house’ the design is a crisp succession of volumes and mass
albeit with a twist– wall-thick cutouts highlighted in bright colors accent the stairwell and mezzanine knee wall
channeling a polychrome version of corbu’s ronchamp
the geometric apertures create colorful recessed spaces that visually define areas of major activity
the smattering of vibrant hues enlivens the main well of the living space as well as the enclosing wall of the stair
interior circulation seems to be organized around the exuberant energy of the client’s children
insofar as an outdoor courtyard lintel becomes a beam for a swing and the colorful cutouts are positively reflected in a modest climbing wall
the home is afforded the courtyard despite the urban site due to an overall strategy of subtraction on the house
this is an architecture formed by recessed masses as well as the space-making capacity of color and diffused light

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
A bike tour in search of the master leads to adventure
Le Corbusier ended up developing a career and body of work that left masterpieces around the globe
He became known as a “global starchitect” before the term existed
despite living in an age when a letter took two weeks to reach its recipient and travel across the Atlantic Ocean about 10 days
So when German filmmaker Jan Rothstein set out to visit some of Corbu’s projects in France
it was quite fitting that his mode of transportation was the bike
“We wanted to feel the physical distance of this ‘pilgrimage,’ the actual spatial distance between where these important projects were situated,” Rothstein told me on Skype
Accompanied by his architect boyfriend Matthias Hoffmann
who shares the filmmaker’s interest in Corbu
Thus their itinerary focused mainly on projects from the 1950s and located in rural areas
That mid-20th century decade is considered by many to be Corbu’s best
This was when his radical visions merged with his expressive sensibility and manifested in Ronchamp as well as such projects as the La Tourette Convent and Unite d’Habitacion
“The subtle way Corbusier gets the light into these late brutalist buildings is pure mastership,” says Rothstein
at the same time no element appears to be too dogmatic or strict.”
the two friends had a revealing chance encounter in an elevator
A 90-year-old woman engaged them in conversation
saying that she has lived there for six decades
When Matthias asked her if she found the building comfortable to live in
spent two thirds of her life there and probably was one of the first inhabitants of the iconic building
anecdotal architectural feedback that’s only possible from being there
Biking to reach these projects also gave Matthias and Jan an added layer to the experience
“It felt good to work physically for every building we wanted to visit
as well as the joy of first discovering it wherever it would materialize in the landscape
It was especially interesting to slowly see the building types change going from northern France to the Cote d’Azur
and how Corbusier would react to that typical architecture of a specific place or region,” Jan commented
Unite d’Habitacion Sports Hall featuring sculpture of Le Corbusier by Xavier Veilham
Such trips can offer pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant experiences
One disappointment (which did have a happy ending)
happened when they arrived at the Cote d’Azur
Here their main goal was to see the famed Cabanon
Corbu’s summer retreat in the village of Roquebrune
the partners found all the scheduled tour times fully booked for that week
They then inquired about seeing the Camping Units designed also by Corbu on the same property
but were told they were not available for visitation at that time
Finally they thought they would then visit Eileen Gray’s E-1027 (all these properties are part of the same compound)
only to find out that the house was under extensive renovations and closed to the public
Finally they found out that the cemetery where Corbu is buried (close by) was indeed open for visitation
Although they ended up not seeing where the Modernist legend lived out his last days
Corbu’s design for his last and final dwelling – a trapezoidal cement volume that makes for a minimalist tombstone
laid on ground atop a hill with sweeping views of the Mediterranean below
Rothstein thinks of it as a “vacation package” that combined culture
the French countryside and even a spa element (he lost close to six pounds with all the pedaling)
Eileen Gray’s E-1027 white building at centre
was getting a live look at the work (and life) of an architect who has fascinated Rothstein since childhood when he leafed through his father’s book on modern architecture and read that odd name: Le Corbusier
From that moment to standing up inside Ronchamp
Of first stepping in that most revered church
Rothstein had this to say: “It was very spiritual
of heightened awareness of your physical presence in that setting
Le Corbusier and his wife Yvonne’s tombstone
This might sound like an obvious comment on a real lived experience
Yet as we live more and more our lives online
it is also a reminder that the wealth of knowledge available to us on the Internet is also limited
we shortchange our experiential selves with “digital age of distraction.” Our many instruments of connectivity are formidable tools

reveals the importance of software solutions as we move into the new era of digital transformation
KIM is a high-tech software company operating in the field of mobile development for Industrial sectors
The company delivers high-reliable software solutions for Manufacturing
Logistics and Aviation industries by integrating barcode engines
RFID or NFC technologies in high-risk industrial zones and across all business sectors
Vicentiu Corbu studied Information Technology and Mathematics at Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiesti with a master’s degree in Computer Science
He is currently in the process of graduation of the MBA program at Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (WU)
Vicentiu Corbu has extensive knowledge in start-ups
project management and software development
He projected and developed software solutions for Corobor Systems
with systems for the aviation industry and customers in over 130 countries
Vicentiu Corbu founded KIM in 2012 and since then
together with his team he built and delivered several successful software applications for the Industrial sector
creating a strong network of international clients and business partners
What are your company’s purpose and areas of interest
the problem that we identified in the industrial sector was the lack of mobility
A lot of activities were done in the field without being transmitted in any system
It was not like someone didn’t want to send them
but it was literally impossible to do that in an efficient way
That is why we realised that we need something as simple as possible to solve this issue
something related to the “Keep IT Simple” motto
but mobile… so we came out with “Keep IT Mobile”
in 2014 we released our first prototype in Oil & Gas industry
a prototype that introduced for the first time NFC technology into oil extraction zones
and we won the Seal of Excellence in Horizon 2020 program for innovation
being the first Romanian company winning Phase II
we released another two modules dedicated to Manufacturing & Logistic sectors
With an increasing role in the energy sector
software must answer its biggest challenge – the energy transition
What is the importance of a business software solution for a company on the path to competitiveness
companies have discovered that automation can open up new horizons
The new dynamic was an alarm signal to improve the efficiency in order to cope with such shocks
process automation can be vital in meeting new market demands
if a company exponentially grows its operations
it cannot sustain the workflows with the same software used at the beginning of the road in order to be competitive in the market
The energy transition represents also a new pillar that needs to be taken into account when designing the IT infrastructure
Things like energy consumption for factory equipment or raw material preservation didn’t represent a necessary priority before
the software solutions have to adapt to these needs
preferably without dramatically changing an existing infrastructure
Software for process automation represents a solution for these demands
especially for the fact that it can be added to an existing infrastructure
KIM for Field Service uses mobility and Industry 4.0 techniques to streamline live maintenance and repair operations
independently or using integration with company ERPs
allows organizations to make sure that maintenance happens as scheduled
with the right materials and by the proper technicians
decrease costs and offer elevated customer experiences
What kind of software products do KIM provide for the customers
Vicentiu Corbu: KIM has a set of modules able to automate the field activity in order to improve operators’ efficiency and reduce waste
NFC or QR to collect the field data in real-time and in the BackEnd we are using AI and machine learning to adapt to the behaviour of the field operators and connect them with the existing IT infrastructure
What are KIM for Manufacturing main benefits and the novelty of this solution
Vicentiu Corbu: KIM novelty comes from the technology that we developed
which allows our customers to obtain a clear set of benefits from the first moment of using the product
One of the main key benefits that was confirmed by our users comes from the production planning that is automatically achieved on each production machine
where we succeeded in highly decreasing the energy cost
because of the real-time visibility of the production process
our customers are now able to contract a higher number of orders and gain more revenue
taking in consideration the actual world challenge in the supply chain
we managed to obtain a cash-flow optimization because the system helps the purchasing department to order the exact amount of material at the exact moment in time
But the most valuable asset of this product stands in the fact that it has embedded decades of experience in process automation acquired from our customers combined with our experience in digitalization
we succeeded in reducing the implementation time to almost a few weeks and the experience for the end-user highly improved in simplicity
the product is used by operators of any age
KIM for Manufacturing gives you the real-time control over the production planning
production follow-up or documents and optimises the flows and stocks of raw materials
semi-finished and finished goods through different stages of production
and full functionality from MES (Manufacturing Execution System)
MRP (Material Resource Planner) and production-oriented WMS (warehouse management systems)
Implementing KIM allows transparent tracking of production and warehousing operations and supervises in real time the actual usage of personnel
How do you evaluate the data and make the knowledge gained available at the right place and at the right time in the processes and product channels
Vicentiu Corbu: The system can be used in any type of configuration
either stand-alone or connected to the existing systems
all the data regarding WMS (warehouse management system)
MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and MRP (Manufacturing Resource Planning) are managed completely by KIM
we use the information regarding work orders
warehouse and purchasing recorded in the ERP and we update it in real-time with the data collected and processed from the field
we collect data from all available sources
the next step is to provide each technician from the production chain with the exact information that he needs
at the right time and with the exact quantity of raw material
KIM FOR LOGISTICS: AUTOMATE YOUR WAREHOUSE AND TRACE YOUR ASSETS
Today the pandemic has created a significant shift for construction firms and tech adoption is the only way forward to embrace the “next normal.” Digitalization will also enable construction managers to define new business and operating models
To eliminate inefficient processes that plague the industry’s productivity caused by ineffective communication and inaccurate project data
We have developed software solutions in order to help the industry overcome these challenges and adopt a smart way in running the business
KIM for Logistics offers real-time access to updated inventory of fixed assets or tools and their movements by quickly identify them through scanning the attached labels (NFC
The digital transformation era is adding to the other challenges
how do you cope with change and disruption
How do you take decisions and identify valuable opportunities
Vicentiu Corbu: The challenges that we saw in the last years
showed that we need not just to accept the change but to embrace it
Complexity and Ambiguity) world and leaders must adapt to that configuration
In all my decisions I have one top priority and that goes to the people that I work with… my colleagues
I think this is the most valuable thing that we learned from the past
that in difficult situations we need to have the support of the team and act united with strength and clarity
What are the most important aspects that should be considered to provide customers in the age of digitalization with optimal software solutions
as more organisations are leveraging the power of automation as they navigate towards recovery
the significance of the technology is ever increasing
In a recent survey of IT and engineering leaders by Gartner
74% of respondents said that automation had helped their workforce work more efficiently
with 59% reported cost reduction up to 30%
The current political and economic context revealed that there are few aspects that are vital
one is related to energy management/preservation and the other one is related to climate change
if through our solutions we are able to address these two needs
KIM’S JOURNEY IN THE INNOVX-BCR BUSINESS ACCELERATOR
KIM entered at the beginning of this year in the InnovX-BCR business accelerator with the aim to be part the most ambitious hubs of entrepreneurial innovation in Central and Eastern Europe and scale by pitching to the investors of this intense program
After the Pre-acceleration phase, KIM is made it in top 10 Innovators to go in the Acceleration Phase. In the Acceleration Phase, KIM obtained the highest number of awards granted by the investors and partners of the program: Colliers
Who are your customers and major ongoing projects
Compared to other countries has Romania a greater appetite for digitalisation
Vicentiu Corbu: Our customers come from two main directions
one is the manufacturing sector and the other one is the services sector
we managed to digitalize companies with more than 500 employees on average with subsidiaries in multiple countries
This year we made the transition to the SaaS path and our solutions can be deployed also to small and medium companies
some good examples of successful projects are Conpet S.A
we obtain high returns in terms of efficiency and productivity
Romania started a good journey for digitalization
More and more companies realise that this is the best chance for growth
it seems that many companies succeeded in opening new lines of business with help of specific software solutions
we have customers that added some of our products in their portfolio for their clients
as added value for their existing services
digitalization can open new horizons not only in terms of reducing costs but also for developing new businesses with existing resources
Do you intend to expand into international markets
Vicentiu Corbu: Our scaling plans targets in the first stage EU countries and then the US market
We are in discussions with international partners to start collaboration and by the end of this year we will have the first results
In the face of constantly evolving technologies and trends shaping the future
what are the most performance tools to drive the transformational change that leads to business results
there has been more and more emphasis on sustainability
but also awareness of climate challenges; thus
digital transformation should be a top priority in achieving these goals
Each project should target at least one of the 17 SDGs adopted by the United Nations
most of the EU funds already addressing these objectives
I think the projects that reach these goals have the best chances to succeed
since then it has seen a string of further repeats
and all ascensionists have confirmed the route's beauty
More details about these routes can also be found in the book entitled 'Parois de Légende' written by Stéphanie Bodet and Arnaud Petit
Inspired by the weird and wonderful - from the beautifully strange cartoon show Adventure Time to the sci-fi mysteries of Interstellar - New York dream pop project Corbu’s debut is a diverse body of work
alongside creative partner Amanda and Todd Hoellerman on drums
Corbu have long since evolved from the earlier days of Graves’ independent direction
articulate and with purpose; ‘Crayon Soul’ paints an identify of celestial kind but also capturing the raw essence of what electronic music should sound like
Lead track ‘Polygon Forest’ explodes like an extra-terrestrial siren
The upbeat backdrop and hypnotic vocals in ‘Thought Emptiness’ further emphasis the group’s fearless style while the sonic bounces of ‘Branches’ seize Graves’ fascinations of retro-style video gaming
With ‘Crayon Soul’’s creativity constantly flowing
it can be difficult at times to pinpoint a location; luckily ‘Better Better Off’ restores some balance with luscious synths and collective guitar strings that echoe summer
Stand out track ‘Battles’; the focal point of the album’s intergalactic journey explores the unknown while challenging the impossible; remaining true to the group’s unworldly artistry
Hints of Tame Impala and MGMT throughout - no doubt done by the work of mixer David Fridmann - along with Corbu’s mind-boggling artistic vision that go hand-in-hand to bring us one of 2016’s most out-there debuts
delivering music that’s every bit inspiring as it is original
classic rock mashup that absorbs and expands on the sound Car Seat Headrest have claimed as their own
They’ve got their unsettling-but-intriguing aesthetic all sewn up

Meet the NY duo whose Dave Fridmann-mixed debut album treads new ground
“Moving into a Manhattan showroom space was always part of [the long-term] strategy for DeMuro Das,” says Brian DeMuro
The move to the top floor of the historic Goelet Building in New York’s Flatiron District comes a short three years after the brand’s American debut at their former Industry City space—but it is the obvious next step for a brand looking to expand its reach
DeMuro Das’s new space at 900 Broadway has a lot going for it
In addition to its structural advantages—an additional 1,000 square feet
and large west-facing windows that bring in the light and a great view—it adheres to the golden mantra of real estate: location
The building is less than a mile away from the trade showrooms at the New York Design Centre
and a short stroll down from retailers like ABC Carpet & Home and Pottery Barn
“Convenience for designers and clients was critical,” says Amy Lee
“but just as important was having a beautiful
with original hardwood floors and lots of natural light
so they kept the design interventions minimal
“We wanted to maintain the New York–loft–like feel,” DeMuro explains
But they also wanted to create a functioning office space that didn’t distract from the furniture
sunlight streams in through the large windows into the grouped seating areas
and more gracious loft-apartment done up by a friend with impeccable taste
As Lee puts it: “We hope that everyone who visits feels like they’d like to stay a while.”

A new photography exhibition focuses on the work of Lucien Hervé
Corbu’s official photog for more than 15 years
BY Sammy Medina
Modern architecture was forged in concrete
Early modernist architects like Bauhaus designer Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier (Corbu for short) pioneered the use of architectural photography
which they used to disseminate images of their own buildings and their polemics
The latter would go on to develop a near schizoid method of collaging building plans
black-and-white photographs of his work to convey his ideas for a radically new architecture
The built architecture was only part of the equation
Corbu’s project entered a new phase when, in 1949, the famous architect discovered his future partner, Lucien Hervé
the Hungarian-born Hervé would capture Le Corbusier’s increasingly plastic and fleshy architecture in thousands of photographs
Corbu would make extensive use of the images
incorporating them into monographs and pamphlets
The dates of the excursions bracket the construction and completion of Corbu’s gargantuan civic complex that was designed to crown the new city of Chandigarh
Hervé met Le Corbusier after sending the master architect a set of expressionistic portraits he had made of the
Corbu relayed to Hervé his delight with the pictures and even went so far as to say that he had “the soul of an architect.” Corbu soon made Hervé his official photographer
and the pair would form a close teacher-pupil bond
“With Le Corbusier,” Hervé later wrote in retrospect
“I learned to discern and identify beauty in its nascent form
this notion forced me to work with rigor and precision.”
Hervé’s photographs favor high contrasts and display a profound sense of mass and void
as earthy as the craggly concrete surfaces Corbu almost exclusively employed over the last two decades of his career
Most of the pictures depict Chandigarh’s sun-stroked architecture bathed in deep shadows
The show also displays Hervé’s affinity for high-wire

His photos of the High Court and Secretariat

Although Gino Salon is closing its doors in Harvard Square after a 43-year run
have moved their business from 20 Holyoke St.
to the Corbu Spa and Salon at the Charles Hotel
“We have been extremely devoted to our business in Harvard Square
but we’re at a time in our lives where we wanted to slow down and let Gino Salon live on beyond this location,” Ruotolo told the Chronicle
Ruotolo wanted to ensure that his close-knit staff of nine was not faced with a “crash landing” after the salon closed
so he spent months negotiating an agreement to bring the entire group to the Charles Hotel
Corbu Salon owners had approached Ruotolo in the past about acquiring Gino
all nine staff members will transfer without losing any benefits
Some employees have been at Gino for 25 years
and he said he is excited they can continue working as a team
“We’re hoping to continue the Gino success in this new salon – that’s our goal,” he said
“The clients who have been coming to Gino will transfer and not notice much of a difference.”
The move has been calculated for the past three years
including around nine months of negotiations with Corbu
The announcement of Harvard’s new Smith Campus Center also contributed to the salon closing
as Ruotolo said it would likely disrupt business
“It feels like the right time to make this change for us
Gino Salon was strictly a hair-cutting and coloring operation
which Ruotolo said is a major advantage for both groups
Ruotolo’s staff will operate under the same hours they had at Gino
and since they are affiliating with spa services
who moved from Italy when he was 12 years old
He wanted to start a new concept of hairdressing by only offering cut and coloring services
Gino Salon was named “Best of Boston” by Boston Magazine three times
and has been featured in many fashion magazines such as Vogue
“I have been very fortunate in this location for 43 years
I have had the most luminous career anyone could imagine,” he said
Clients have included a host of notables including members of the Kennedy family
Ruotolo has cut down his own hours to three days a week so he can spend more time with his family
travel and watch his granddaughters play tennis
and will finally have time to do art for the first time in almost eight years
“I’m not sad about moving on – it’s a new beginning
The past doesn’t have as much value as what is ahead,” he said
and the group began its new operation at Corbu

I appreciate your selection of photos in which you have tried to be neutral and show better side of Gandhinagar
I would say the 'banality' of Gandhinagar you're pointing out is merely a lack of population density and not some innate fault of design and planning
Karnataka's vidhanasbha is far more beautiful than Chandigadh's or Gandhinagar's.
