Lidingö stad—a municipality located in Stockholm County Sweden— faces the same challenges as most other municipalities in Sweden to ensure compliance with the Freedom of the Press Act The principle of public access to official documents is a fundamental principle of Sweden's constitution that municipal activities should be conducted as openly as possible under the scrutiny of the public and the media The process of handling requests for public documents is a time-consuming task that must be managed promptly in accordance with Chapter 2 Section 16 of the Freedom of the Press Act Some municipalities have therefore allocated resources solely to handle this task or these resources (such as administrators) are found within the operations where the task is added to the existing work which cannot be performed when requests are received could be used for more value-creating effort Each individual request necessitates the responsible employee to perform a confidentiality assessment reviewing all requested documents and determining what needs to be redacted This includes manually redacting personally identifiable information (PII) and other classified material This process is crucial for maintaining transparency and democracy One of the challenges in maintaining the promptness requirement is that many of the requested documents can consist of making the task of reviewing and identifying confidential information difficult it often requires employees to work together to ensure everything is done correctly Lidingö stad as part of the project “Rätt till insyn” decided to partner with IBM and ATEA to explore innovative ways to efficiently and effectively streamline its document assessment processes they embarked on a transformational journey leveraging the potential of generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) Lidingö stad employed IBM watsonx.ai and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies to automatically detect and flag potentially sensitive elements across vast volumes of documentation By implementing gen AI capabilities alongside existing tools the initiative aimed to significantly reduce processing durations This technological integration aligned seamlessly with Lidingö stad’s operational landscape the Lidingö stad employees remained integral participants in the process through a collaborative approach called human-in-the-loop (HITL) HITL integrates human input into the development and use of AI systems allowing employees to verify the AI’s automated suggestions and adjust outputs as necessary IBM conducted weekly iterations to refine and tailor functional deliveries to meet Lidingö stad’s unique needs The collaboration produced an innovative Minimum Viable Product (MVP) powered by watsonx NLP and gen AI technologies automating the identification and removal of PII Lidingö stad was able to effectively tackle the core obstacles inherent in conventional data masking practices AI-assisted workflow that supports compliance with the Freedom of the Press Act Transitioning from purely analogue practices to semi-automatic processes has also facilitated more consistency and fostered greater institutional responsiveness IBM will continue refining Lidingö stad’s AI models while ATEA will provide the necessary infrastructure and local expertise to integrate future developments seamlessly the collaborators will co-create a pilot that uses AI to digitize Both IBM and ATEA will help scale the current solution across other municipalities they will ensure the municipality continues to evolve and meet new challenges efficient solution for public document management and data masking Lidingö stad views this initiative as part of a broader vision for document handling aligned with ongoing collaboration alongside other municipalities within a Vinnova-funded project This larger endeavor aims to establish a comprehensive framework for modernizing public document management across Sweden Lidingö stad (link resides outside of ibm.com) is a municipality located in Stockholm County Sweden responsible for overseeing local services such as schools and machine learning capabilities with ease IBM, the IBM logo, and IBM Consulting are trademarks or registered trademarks of International Business Machines Corporation, in the United States and/or other countries. bridge design practice Knight Architects in collaboration with engineers Sweco the new Lilla Lidingöbron bridge was opened for pedestrians cyclists and moped passengers in late 2022 Relied upon daily by around 4,000 pedestrians and cyclists it is anticipated that more than 15,000 passenger journeys will be made every day by the new tram the public transport and mobility options of the new bridge provide greater low and zero carbon travel options and contribute to a modal shift directly responding to the City of Stockholm’s ambitions to increase renewable energy in transportation from 16% to 100% by 2040 The new bridge replaces Gamla Lidingöbron (Old Lidingö Bridge) a low-level bridge which opened in 1925 and carried pedestrians As the low-level crossing became increasingly expensive to maintain the decision was taken in 2012 by commissioning client Lidingö Stad (Lidingö City) to replace the old bridge with a new £60m (700m SEK) crossing with greater provision for active travel and twin tram lines the new Lilla Lidingöbron is one of Sweden’s longest tramway bridges and is significantly wider than its predecessor With a 7.4m-wide segregated cycle and pedestrian deck plus two local widenings as balconies the new bridge provides a more generous space for cyclists and pedestrians and a safe and reliable year-round crossing Together with a lower bridge gradient and plans for summertime seating the bridge has a clear focus on user enjoyment: encouraging maximum active mobility across all social groups Lilla Lidingöbron’s design responds to the rhythm of the neighbouring brutalist 1960s high-level road bridge with matching spanning arrangements more elegant structural form with a sequence of gently curved spans rising gracefully to the central navigation channel the historic listed ‘Temple of the Winds’ shelter from the original bridge – a waiting shelter for tram passengers at a junction in the old tram routes at Torsvik on the Lidingö landing – was carefully removed and restored It now provides a historic reminder of the region’s connections and acts as a beacon welcoming users to Lidingö in the dark winter months and encouraging use of the bridge as a destination as well as a crossing in summertime Knight Architects was appointed from the outset of the bridge’s design before being retained as client advisor for the Design & Build tender and throughout the construction stage Extensive public and stakeholder engagement was carried out as part of the design process said: “Lilla Lidingöbron plays a vital role in connecting the island of Lidingö to Stockholm’s main urban area Its attractive design is focused on the user and supports widespread year-round use The new bridge is already encouraging modal shift to low-carbon transport alternatives At Knight Architects we seek to improve connectivity for communities and generate lasting value so we are very proud that Lilla Lidingöbron will make such a significant contribution to the city of Stockholm’s ambitious renewable energy targets.” said:  “This is a great day for the people of Lidingö and all travellers on the Lidingö tram as you can now travel all the way from Gåshaga to Ropsten We are very pleased with the effectiveness of the bridge: generous spaces for both bicycles and public transport We are now becoming part of Stockholm again © Built Environment and can run even in the colder weather | Tranquil Årstaskogen / Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons Södermalm Södermalm may be crawling with hipsters but for runners in the city it’s the path that winds along the entire outer edge of the island that’s the real attraction You can do a full lap of the island (around 11km) and it’s got plenty of challenges if you want to avoid the completely level route including steep stairs and plenty of up and down hill areas That it rims the island means the views are pretty outrageous so don’t get distracted | Challenge yourself on the cliffs of Södermalm / Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons Långholmen Short and sweet and utterly relaxing a run around one of Stockholm’s smaller islands It’s a moderate run and the charm of Långholmen will disappear behind you far too quickly but since it’s super close to Södermalm you can extend the run in myriad ways such as using Slussen as your starting point Sign up to our newsletter to save up to $800 on peaceful and uncrowded but new development has made the waterfront ideal for running The best way to do this route is start at Hornstull and head over Liljeholm’s Bridge From there it’s along the water and through parks and forests – or you can cross a bridge along the way and head back into the city | Liljehomen is wonderful for shorter, more relaxed runs / Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons Hellasgården This gorgeous recreation area just south of the city is part of Nacka Reserve and is littered with marked trails so you can run as long (or as little) as you’d like There’s a big lake that is perfect for running around as well as plenty of paths through the forests – some more challenging than others You can also combine your run with kayaking or canoeing cross country skiing or pretty much any other outdoor activity you can think of | There are plenty of marked trails at Hellasgården / Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons Kungsholmen Much of the Kings Island, as Kungsholmen is known in English is a bit ignored in Stockholm – it’s where you don’t go unless someone you know lives there or if you work there Which all means that unless you’re hanging around City Hall or Rålambshovparken you’re going to find some pretty peaceful areas right in the middle of the city City Hall is a great place to start your run – begin at City Hall and soon you’ll pass Rålambshovsparken and be making your way around the whole island which is one of the more gorgeous but lesser known routes in the city | Kungsholmstrand is delightfully relaxed / Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons Gärdet Nestled up close to Östermalm (and somewhat considered part of Ösermalm) Gärdet is open fields and some deep forest – and the whole area is literally right at your door step This is the perfect place for a bookend run – one that starts or ends your day It will take you right to the outer edges of Djurgården so if you’re looking for a challenge combine the two areas and really go for it all in the midst of some pretty heady scenery and plenty of peace most peaceful running spots in Stockholm with this handy map: See & Do The Best European Cities to Visit in October
