the first year in which all three races were in existence simultaneously
thereby denying him a probable Triple Crown
the first horse to win all three races (1919)
The title was then given to subsequent pre-1950 winners at following annual dinners of the organization
Triple Crown champions is provided in the table
Welcome to 2025 Triple Crown Prospect Profiles – updated after the first jewel of the Triple Crown from the previous title of Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles – where we’ll take a look each week at a recent winner on the Triple Crown trail
This week’s profile, of course, is Sovereignty, the 1 ½-length winner of the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve May 3 at Churchill Downs
let’s take a closer look at Sovereignty and how he might fit for both races
Sovereignty has been a top 3-year-old pretty much from the start of the year
He ran fourth in his debut in a sprint in August 2024 at Saratoga Race Course, ran second in a one-mile maiden race five weeks later at Belmont at the Big A, and had a coming-out party in his first start around two turns when winning the 1 1/16-mile Street Sense Stakes by five lengths Oct
Sovereignty scorched his final three eighths of a mile in :36.74 to give every indication that he was a serious racehorse
and his star has continued to rise as a 3-year-old
Mott had Sovereignty ready to fire on Kentucky Derby day
on a track he had shown an affinity for and with an extra eighth of a mile for his closing bid
He completed his final three-eighths of a mile in :37.75 and his final furlong in :12.71 to outfinish favorite Journalism
completing the 1 ¼ miles in 2:02.31 on a sealed sloppy track
He improved to three wins and two seconds in six career starts and earned his first Grade 1 win in U.S
he was traveling beautifully,” winning jockey Junior Alvarado said after Sovereignty rallied from 16th of 19 starters to prevail
“When we hit the five-eighths pole he said he was ready
I got him in the clear and he showed his stuff
Speed Figures: Sovereignty needed to take a step forward in terms of speed figures to win the Kentucky Derby and he did so
recording a new career-best Equibase and Beyer Speed Figure
He improved four points from his previous best to a 103 Equibase Speed Figure and recorded a nine-point Beyer improvement to a 104
If he can duplicate that effort on two weeks rest in the Preakness or on five weeks of rest in the Belmont Stakes
Sovereignty is dependent on multiple variables out of his control
He benefitted from a fast pace in the Kentucky Derby
but he was forced very wide in the stretch
Ground loss is better than getting stopped behind a wall of fading horses
and Sovereignty sustained his rally from the turn through the finish line
Pimlico has a reputation as being kind to speed horses
Last year’s Preakness winner Seize the Grey led from start to finish and six of the last 16 Preakness winners led after a half-mile
The only deep closer to win the Preakness in the last 16 years was Exaggerator in 2016
so Sovereignty’s running style could hurt his Preakness chances
The 1 ¼-mile Belmont Stakes at Saratoga last year was won by a runner who was second in the early stages
but it’s not fair to predict if there is any type of preferred style off of one edition of the race at Saratoga
Sovereignty should have no problem with 1 3/16 miles for the Preakness and 1 ¼ miles for the Belmont Stakes – he just won the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby
There also is a strong chance he continues to improve with age and experience
Sovereignty might just be figuring things out
Triple Crown Potential: Ten years ago, American Pharoah ended a 37-year drought by sweeping the Triple Crown. Justify followed suit in 2018
Could Sovereignty become the 14th Triple Crown winner
There is a reason Triple Crown winners are so rare: it’s incredibly hard to win three races against elite competition in five weeks
the second (Preakness) coming on a short turnaround with two weeks rest
There will be new shooters in the Preakness Stakes, like speedy Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by Resorts World Casino winner Rodriguez
Other Derby runners will rest up for the Belmont Stakes five weeks later
Should Sovereignty win the Preakness – and there is no guarantee as of this writing he will even return in two weeks – he would have a host of rested contenders from the Kentucky Derby and beyond waiting to play spoiler in the Belmont Stakes
is very unlikely against what looks like a quality group of 3-year-olds
The Preakness would be a difficult assignment for a deep closer like Sovereignty unless he gets a fast pace in the race or he can track a little closer to the front. If Mott and owner-breeder Godolphin opt to skip the Preakness in favor of the Belmont Stakes
Sovereignty would be very tough to beat in his current form on five weeks of rest
I’d love to see a Sovereignty-Journalism rematch in the Preakness Stakes for the milestone 150th edition
but for now we wait to see how the field develops and whether or not there will be the chance for a Triple Crown sweep should Sovereignty take his talents to Baltimore

A Filipino family has opened a new restaurant
Their siblings and parents are also involved in the business
“We have just seen the lack of Filipino restaurants here,” says Diane
“Kultura in Filipino translates to ‘culture’
“And we want to showcase the culture of the Philippines in Aberdeen.”
The Rivera family moved to Aberdeen from the Philippines back in 2010
and also run catering company Dolores’ Lutong Bahay in the Northern Golf Club
The menu at Kultura includes dishes like lumpiang Shanghai (pork spring rolls)
kwek-kwek (battered quail eggs) and DLB’s pork barbecue (marinated pork skewers)
There is also a traditional “sari-sari” store – similar to a corner shop – near the entrance of the restaurant
which serves Filipino ingredients and snacks
After a successful soft opening for friends and family on Monday night
Diane says the restaurant is fully booked tonight
“It feels amazing to have had such a great response,” says Diane
“All the hard work my brother has been putting in here is worth it
“We want the Filipino culture to be well known
because we’re quite a way from back home
we want to have the restaurant as a place they can gather
Mum Dolores is delighted that her children are joining her on this journey with Kultura
“I’m very proud because they love to follow my passions,” she says
“They’re so happy about what they’re doing
“We serve beautiful food because it’s from our hearts
“Because it’s not only about earning an income
it’s about making our customers happy.”
The family team spent two months redecorating 47 Belmont Street
they also added photography of key landmarks and traditions from the Philippines and other décor
47 Belmont Street has a rich foodie history over the last few years
Many will remember it as home to Pizza Express, which closed during the chain’s restructuring back in 2020
In February 2022, Kirk View Cafe moved from its Union Terrace home to the Belmont Street unit
Sadly, the restaurant closed due to “rising weekly costs” in July 2023
Most recently, it became a second home for Tucán’s South American cuisine in December 2023
But the owners shut their city centre location due to “no footfall” and returned to their original home in Rosemount in August 2024
the Rivera family have opened Kultura and the restaurant was bustling at lunchtime
The first customer through the door was 31-year-old Jamie Lomas
who enjoys Dolores’ food at the golf club
He says: “I think it’s a really interesting cuisine that a lot of people don’t really know about
“I think it will add a bit of vibrance to Belmont Street
It’s a bit more interesting than some fast food chains.”
Authentic Filipino cuisine is the aim at Kultura
with 29-year-old chef Romeo leading the team in the open plan kitchen
“Filipino cuisine is not very known here,” says Romeo
but I think this will be the first proper Filipino restaurant in Scotland.”
skin-on fries and lumpiang baboy (pork spring rolls)
Kultura also offers “Filipino-style tapas” in an “all you can eat” menu
Diane adds: “Filipino cuisine is known for amazing flavour
“People tend to associate Filipino cuisine with Chinese food
but our food has a taste that locals don’t know yet.”
Kultura’s opening hours are 12-10pm Wednesday-Saturday and 11am-9pm on Sunday

the connections of two other top contenders from this year’s Kentucky Derby announced they will be skipping the Preakness Stakes
Rather than wheeling back Baeza and Sandman in just two weeks for the second leg of the Triple Crown
the teams of both talented colts will instead aim for the Belmont Stakes on June 7
After drawing into the Derby field following the scratch of Rodriguez
earning his third consecutive triple-digit Equibase speed figure (101) via a solid third-place finish in the Derby
We could not be more proud of Baeza today & his 3rd place finish! He finished strong & we are hopeful of what’s to come. Congrats to Sovereignty & Journalism- so well done! Thanks to Team Baeza- we’ll be back 💜💛💜 pic.twitter.com/IcWZ452FI8
Despite the impressive showing trainer John Shirreffs stated on Sunday that Baeza will not run in the Preakness
“Quite a trip for him the whole week,” Shirreffs said
Then that big field and the bumping that went on
he ran well and we’re very proud of him.”
The half-brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and 2024 Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch
will likely be one of the top contenders in the 2025 running of the 1 ½ mile “Test of Champions"
Pats for Sandman ❤️ pic.twitter.com/O15hGZZhpn
Off his seventh place Kentucky Derby finish trainer Mark Casse stated that Sandman will likely follow the same route as Baeza
opting to skip the “The Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown”
“More than likely Belmont, but crazier things have happened,” Casse told David Grening of the Daily Racing Form
who was beaten by 12 ½ lengths as the second overall betting choice
will for sure be among the top betting choices once again in the Belmont Stakes due to his pedigree as well as previously breaking his maiden over the dirt surface
His sire Tapit has sired Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist (2014)
We need to highlight that this year’s Belmont Stakes will run on Saturday
June 7 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs
due to the ongoing construction at Belmont Park

A historical marker has been erected in Belmont recognizing the courage and sacrifice in battle of about two dozen young men who have come to be known as the South Fork Boys
25-year-old Major William Chronicle led the force
out of the South Fork River area in what is now Belmont to join other Patriots and confront British Major Patrick Ferguson and his regiment of American Loyalists at Kings Mountain. It had been more than four years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence
and Ferguson was waging an aggressive campaign of intimidation against citizens and Patriot forces in the Carolinas
Major Chronicle and three other members of his South Fork Boys died on Oct
in a battle that has been recognized as a turning point of the Revolutionary War in the South
Members of the Belmont Rotary Club heard about the heroism of Major Chronicle and the South Fork Boys recently as Laura Duncan
representing the Daughters of the American Revolution
spoke about the recent placement of a historical marker at 6131 Wilkinson Boulevard in Belmont near Crossfix Ministries. She said the four Gaston County DAR chapters - Major William Chronicle
Tryon Resolves and William Gaston - waged their own long campaign to have the contributions of the South Fork Boys recognized with a marker
More than 50 pages of documentation were compiled and submitted to obtain approval for the marker
Major Chronicle's home was in present-day Belmont
near where the Chronicle Mill (now the Chronicle Mill Apartments) was later named in his honor
A historical marker recognizing Major Chronicle is nearby at 40 E
Duncan said Major Chronicle and one of his men
had an advantage because of their knowledge of the rugged terrain
"Ferguson had made camp at Major Chronicle and Captain Mattocks old deer camp," she said
"The South Fork Boys used their critical knowledge of the terrain to help inform the charge and provided a spy to gain key intelligence on Ferguson." Duncan described Major Chronicle's death in these words: "As they reached the base of the ridge
with Chronicle some 10 paces in advance of his men
crying out 'face to the hill,' when a musket ball struck him
and he fell."Major Chronicle was buried where he fell
and a stone marker marks the gravesite in Kings Mountain National Military State Park
Also buried there are Captain Mattocks and two more South Fork Boys
who also made the ultimate sacrifice that day

An Elon Musk lookalike has revealed the story behind a viral TikTok video filmed outside Aberdeen’s Belmont Chipper
Hugo Dejean, also known by his artist name Hugo One
was out in Aberdeen on Thursday night during a road trip across Scotland with four of his friends
The 28-year-old from Luxembourg was filmed by his friend outside the Belmont Chipper as a man walked up to him and said he looked like SpaceX founder Elon Musk
Mr Dejean, who works at the University of Luxembourg, said he found the video “really funny” and posted it to TikTok
Since then, the video has surpassed one million views on TikTok.
Hugo has talked about how the video came to be
and how his similar appearance to Elon Musk was a “running joke” throughout the trip
The Belmont Chipper even said the video resulted in an “increase to their sales” and that the two men were welcome back anytime
said a range of remarks regarding Hugo’s appearance including: “It’s Elon Musk” and “‘mon the SpaceX”
he said: “It’s genuinely concerning
“Elon Musk is outside the Belmont Chipper.”
with one user saying: “Why is Elon musk in Aberdeen?”
Another added: “The more I look at him I’m convinced it is him.”
someone said: “I actually thought that was Elon Musk just casually sitting outside a kebab shop in Scotland.”
Hugo Dejean posted the video on Friday night to his TikTok page
He told the P&J: “It was just a video filmed really quickly outside the Belmont Chipper in Aberdeen
It’s just gone absolutely crazy.”
the TikTok is currently at 1.3 million views
It has also been picked up by a popular Instagram video page called Great British Memes which has 2.7 million followers, as well as a Scottish page which has one million followers.
Hugo was visiting Aberdeen with four friends that he made during his time studying at the University of Aberdeen
They did a tour of Scotland to celebrate their ten years of friendship
“We said that since we studied in Aberdeen
we needed to finish our trip in Aberdeen,” he said
“We went out on the Thursday to Prohibition
“After the night out we were feeling hungry so we went to the Belmont Chipper which is the one we always used to go to after a night out
“I waited outside for my chips then suddenly this guy comes up to me and starts saying I look like Elon Musk.”
He added that his similar appearance to Elon Musk had actually been a “running joke” throughout the trip
I told my friends that people come up and say I look like Elon Musk
Hugo’s friend was filming the viral video while the rest of his friends were behind the camera
He added: “I think my friends were laughing at the situation
Five people in the space of 24 hours said that I look like Elon Musk
“I don’t want to say I’m getting used to it
I’m not actually enjoying people coming up to me and saying I look like Elon Musk
“Firstly because I don’t think he’s a good person
Then also I don’t think he’s necessarily a good looking person so it’s not necessarily a compliment to me.”
Hugo said one thing that was ‘making him lose his mind’ was the number of people thinking he is actually Elon Musk
“This is also making me lose my mind – I feel like some people in the comments genuinely believe Elon Musk was in Aberdeen,” he said
“Some people are writing comments saying: ‘is it him
Belmont Chipper owner Rahim Chowdhury was in the shop while the video was being filmed
He said: “It was totally out of the blue
“I’d like to say thanks to everyone for all the kind messages
Ohio — Belmont College and WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital have announced a partnership aimed at enhancing the college's radiology program
which promises to bring significant improvements for students and healthcare services in the region
"Having this partnership will allow our students to have the opportunities for more clinical sites
There's so much demand for radiologic technologists right now that we are having a hard time keeping up with the demand," said Carrie White
vice president of academic affairs at Belmont College
will undergo a transition this summer with an updated curriculum and a new interim director
who is also the Radiology Director at Wheeling Hospital
"My biggest priority for them [students] right now is to just make sure they can achieve their graduation goals for 2026
We want to make sure they will be able to sit for their registry and make sure they meet all their criteria," Bond said
Paul Gasparro emphasized the importance of the partnership
but when you come up with a partnership with a major hospital in your area you're ensuring the future success of the program
Students will be training in one of the major locations where they will be working
You can't beat that," Gasparro said
Local career opportunities were a focal point during the announcement
with the partners aiming to ensure that local students have job opportunities to meet healthcare needs in the area
radiology is one of the key components we provide at the hospital and making sure that we have a stable workforce
a development of individuals going into the field
is vitally important for us," said David Phillips
vice president and COO of WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital
"So whenever we can help out in the field
we're going to make sure we do that."
Law firm TLT has secured a 30-year conservation covenant for longstanding partner Belmont Estate
making it the first offsite biodiversity net gain (BNG) provider in North Somerset and demonstrating the firm’s expertise in BNG.
Belmont is a regenerative organisation on a mission to inspire behavioural change through the delivery of nature-recovery projects
nature connection and community programmes and natural capital solutions across multiple sites in the UK.
The conservation covenant was secured for Watercress Farm
a key site in the organisation’s nature recovery journey
allowing the site to be formally added to National England’s Gain Site register
Belmont will play a central role in supporting regional development
allowing developers to access high-quality BNG units
whilst also driving ecological restoration that will benefit the local community.
Alongside advising Belmont on all the legal requirements of securing the conservation covenant
TLT has also been providing legal guidance on BNG to the organisation since it became a mandatory legal requirement in February 2024 under the Environment Act
The team was led by partner and head planning at TLT Katherine Evans and partner in TLT’s future energy team David Miller.
Business Director at Belmont Estate commented: "Securing this covenant is a proud moment for our team and a testament to our long-term vision for nature recovery and connection in the Southwest
Developers working with us aren't just ticking a box; they're aligning with a project offering enduring benefits for biodiversity and local communities."
said: “This is a milestone moment for Belmont
as well as the use of conservation covenants – one of the two legal mechanisms by which land can be registered on the site register
By becoming the first offsite BNG provider in North Somerset
the organisation will be delivering lasting conservation benefits for the good of the local area
It was a pleasure to support the team in securing this covenant
providing a pathway to help the business achieve its long-term sustainability goals.”
TLT became Belmont’s first corporate partner in 2022
The partnership is part of TLT’s commitment to working with other sustainability-minded organisations to support environmental and social goals and the communities where it is based
The partnership has also allowed TLT staff to learn about nature and conservation through a community-led volunteering programme in Watercress Farm.

Elias Stable’s stakes winner Captain Cook is a leading contender as he seeks his third local victory in Saturday’s $200,000 Peter Pan (G3)
The Peter Pan is the traditional prep for the $2-million Belmont (G1)
which will be contested at a distance of 10-furlongs at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday
June 7 as part of the five-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival
NYRA will waive the entry and starting fees to the Belmont
for the first three finishers in the Peter Pan
the Practical Joke bay enters from a fourth as the favorite in the local nine-furlong Wood Memorial (G2) on April 5
Captain Cook tracked the pace set by Rodriguez through fractions of 23.31 seconds and :47.44 on the fast main track
before fading to fourth as that rival went onto victory
“We thought that he ran as good as he could,” said Dutrow
“He had everything go his way in the race and it seemed to me that he just kind of got outrun
He has bounced back in his training and he is doing good
Manny Franco] was on the outside of the Derby starting gate looking in with 35 total qualifying points
after previously capturing the nine-furlong Withers (L) on Feb
1 at Aqueduct by 2 1/4 lengths over returning rival Surfside Moon
His other effort for Dutrow was a third-out graduation by 9 1/4 lengths sprinting seven furlongs over sloppy and sealed going on Dec
28 here in his first start for new connections
Dutrow said he likes the spacing between starts– it will be 35 days since the Wood Memorial
so 35 or 40 days doesn’t make much difference because he is doing good,” said Dutrow
“We are happy enough to look at this race.”
Captain Cook was sixth going six furlongs for conditioner Norm Casse in his October debut at Churchill Downs
He was later purchased for $410,000 at the 2024 Keeneland November Horses of Racing Age Sale as part of the dispersal of the estate of the late John Hendrickson
Captain Cook is out of the Grade 2-placed Indian Charlie mare Pow Wow Wow
His third dam is 2003 Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner and Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Bird Town
a half-sister to 2004 Belmont and Travers (G1) victor Birdstone – both out of the Reine-de-Course mare Dear Birdie
who finished 1 1/2 lengths behind Captain Cook for fifth in the Wood Memorial
who is a half-brother to 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna out of the Uncle Mo mare Sataves
also finished fifth in the one-turn mile Gotham (G3) in March at Aqueduct
In his other two efforts for Black Type Thoroughbreds
McAfee won his November debut at Churchill Downs ahead of a close second in a starter allowance there just over three weeks later
Amo Racing USA’s Grade 1-placed Hill Road [post 4, Flavien Prat] was a top contender for the Wood Memorial but was scratched due to a fever. Trained by Chad Brown, the Quality Road bay’s last effort was a third in the 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 8 when adding blinkers
He's fully recovered from the temperature and looks good
I'm pleased with him,” said Brown
"It's a really strong crop so if he's able to get to the Belmont it will be a real challenging race
but we'll take it one race at a time."
Hill Road’s first three efforts were for previous trainer Adrian Murray including a third to subsequent Champion 2-Year-Old Citizen Bull in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in November at Del Mar
Hill Road, a $350,000 purchase at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, is out of the Argentinian stakes-placed Lemon Drop Kid mare Exotic Notion, a half-sister to multiple Grade 1-winner City of Light
The Gun Runner chestnut won his one-mile and 40-yard debut on March 22 at Tampa Bay Downs
he closed from 7 1/2 lengths back in fifth position en route to a 1 1/4-length score over Three Percent
“It looks like he's going to want more distance and I thought this was a good spot to stretch him out
It's a big step for an inexperienced horse
but I do like the distance for him” Brown said
"We've taken our time with him and he's starting to come around now."
a $725,000 RNA at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale
is a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Hall of Fame out of the unraced Giant’s Causeway mare Flag Day
a half-sister to graded stakes-placed Street Ready and stakes-placed Robin Hood
Manor Stable and Mair Lee Stables’ Surfside Moon [post 3
Junior Alvarado] was a last-out 3 1/4-length third to Pay Billy in the nine-furlong Federico Tesio on April 19 at Laurel Park
the Malibu Moon chestnut was returning from a layoff due to a virus after his aforementioned second to Captain Cook in the Withers
“I wish there was a little more time in between
but it is nice to finally get him in two races back to back,” said Lawrence
“He came out of his last in good order
and we’ve had a couple nice breezes with him.”
He also liked Surfside Moon’s six-furlong breeze in 1:15.60 on Sunday over the Fair Hill all-weather training track
but I was extremely proud of his effort coming off the layoff and being sick as long as he was out of the Withers,” said Lawrence
just got a little late in the last 70 yards
With that race and the works under his belt
hopefully it’ll put us in the winner’s circle for the Peter Pan.”
Surfside Moon was 33-1 when making his sophomore debut in the Withers
certainly outrunning his odds and posting a 90 Beyer
He graduated third-out going one-mile on turf in August at Delaware Park ahead of off-the-board efforts in the off-the-turf Laurel Futurity and the 1 1/16-mile Awad (L) on turf at Aqueduct
“I thought that going two turns on the dirt would really suit him,” Lawrence said
“I was with his owner Jim Perella this morning [watching the work]
we went down and met him right when he came off the track and you would never even know he worked
It takes a lot to get him to huff and puff.”
WinStar Farm and Repole Stable’s Uncaged [post 6
Kendrick Carmouche] added blinkers to win a one-turn mile optional-claimer by 1 3/4 lengths over On the Mount on a muddy and sealed strip on April 6 at Aqueduct
the Curlin bay entered from a fourth in a six-furlong optional-claimer on March 2 at Gulfstream Park
Uncaged’s lone other start was a debut win sprinting six furlongs on August 3 at Saratoga Race Course
He was a $450,000 purchase at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is out of the graded stakes-winning Pioneerof the Nile mare Dark Nile
Pletcher also sends out Team Penney Racing’s Vassimo [post 1
who made a pair of Grade 2 efforts on the Derby trail at Fair Grounds
including a fourth in the nine-furlong Risen Star in February and a sixth when adding blinkers in the 1 3/16-mile Louisiana Derby in March
The Nyquist bay crossed the wire first in his other two starts
a one-mile and 40-yards optional-claimer in January at Tampa and a one-mile maiden in December at Gulfstream [later disqualified and placed last due to a medication violation]
out of dual graded stakes-winning Pulpit mare Bsharpsonata
was a $120,000 purchase at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale
Pletcher has won the Peter Pan a record five times

WHEELING — Triadelphia Middle School eighth grader Sadie Murphy enjoyed a birthday surprise Friday morning — sort of
but Belmont Savings Bank surprised her by announcing that her design will be used for the bank’s upcoming 140th birthday cards
Bank representatives were at Triadelphia Middle on Friday morning to unveil the winning middle school artist design for Belmont Savings’ birthday card
The winning design among high school entries will be announced later
“I was really surprised and really excited
“It’s something I really enjoyed doing.”
created with colored pencils and shading pencils
depicts a huge blue and yellow birthday cake with balloons surrounding it and the Belmont Savings Bank logo adorning the top
Murphy said she worked through multiple options before she landed on the one that eventually won
and the third one was my favorite,” she said
Belmont Saving Bank President Todd Cover said the selection committee fielded 55 entries from 12 local middle schools
The group whittled the lineup to three finalists
then ultimately picked Murphy’s as the winner
“It just encapsulated everything we wanted a birthday celebration to be,” Cover said
“It’s just a fun picture.”
said it has been a joy to watch Murphy grow as an artist while at Triadelphia
both academically and artistically,” she said
“It’s been a pleasure to have her in class and watch her grow in her abilities
I’ve just tried to foster her and nurture her abilities the best I can
It’s just a winning combination.”

As Mott and the Godolphin team ponder possible next steps regarding their colt’s potential Triple Crown bid
the connections of several other top Derby runners are similarly examining options for their runners
The trainer said he would have conversations over the next few days with the owners and make a decision. Journalism is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables 5, and Coolmore affiliates
“We’ll give him a day or two to get his feet underneath him and see where we’re at,” McCarthy said
“He’s run well back off of quick rest before
Journalism made the first three starts of his career in a seven-week timeframe last fall, culminating in a Los Alamitos Futurity victory
His 1 1/2-length defeat in the Derby was his first since finishing third at six furlongs in his career debut
McCarthy earned his first Triple Crown race victory with Rombauer in the 2021 Preakness Stakes and would be grateful for another chance to contest the 1 3/16-mile classic race if the decision is made to run
“It’s still very prestigious in its own right,” McCarthy said
“I would like to win any Triple Crown race
I would have liked to put the Derby in the books and worried about the rest of the stuff later
Journalism will stay at Churchill Downs for the near future as final decisions are made. Should connections choose to skip the Preakness in favor of the June 7 Belmont Stakes, McCarthy said he would ship early to Saratoga Race Course
McCarthy was visibly emotional about the defeat Sunday morning, but could not be more proud of the effort his Santa Anita Derby winner put forth
“I thought he ran very well,” McCarthy said
“It was unfortunate that he got pinched a little bit there leaving the gate
He was a little bit further back beneath the wire the first time around than I would have liked
but put in a wonderful run around the turn and was beaten by the horse I thought he had to beat.”
McCarthy said he had been impressed by Sovereignty exiting the prep season and during training hours in the week before the Derby
“I thought after the Florida Derby, even with as well as the winner [Tappan Street] ran
I thought [Sovereignty] was the horse to beat,” he said
“Coming out of the turn, as well as we were moving, I could see Junior [Alvarado on Sovereignty] was behind us moving just as well
I thought it was just a matter of who was going to stick around longer
Sovereignty stuck around a little longer than [Journalism] did.”
Journalism’s jockey, Umberto Rispoli
said after the race that he did not feel Journalism was comfortable early when racing on the sloppy going
McCarthy said he is hopeful he will have another shot at Sovereignty this year
saying he believed both horses will be in the conversation for Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old by year’s end
“He’s as good as there is in his class this year
He showed up and ran as advertised,” McCarthy said
“Take nothing away from our horse yesterday
Also running well in the Derby was C R K Stable and Grandview Equine’s Baeza
After a stressful week for the connections as they waited to see whether he’d draw in off the also-eligible list
the son of McKinzie rewarded their patience with a closing third-place finish
“I don’t think he had the best of trips,” trainer John Shirreffs said
“Running on an off-track for the first time
that’s a little bit of a different experience
Shirreffs said the Preakness is not under consideration for the half-brother (same dam [mother]
different sire [father]) to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and 2024 Belmont winner Dornoch
we’d rather go back to California and regroup a little bit,” Shirreffs said
He did mention that plans could change any time before the colt boarded the plane
which was still an undetermined date as of Sunday morning
Baeza is under consideration to have one more attempt at becoming Puca’s third classic winner in three years in the June 7 Belmont Stakes
saying farewell to the colt’s many connections with

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Spring is the season of renewal and an idyllic photo opportunity
“Enjoy nature and be in the moment,” says photographer Lauren Bakis
“The trees come back to life; the flowers start to bloom.”
Bakis sometimes clicks her camera at Tuckaseege Park
But when she isn’t capturing spring’s new beginnings
she documents the flickers of joy that lead to a heart wrenching ending
taking photos of Lynn Jones of Gastonia and her dog Luke
“An end-of-life session is what they call they’re kind of known as
But I call them ‘celebration of life,’” Bakis told Queen City News
“You’re just naturally going to love on him the way that you do
documenting a sweet bond that goes back to 2018
That’s when Jones rescued Luke days before he was set to be euthanized at shelter
“Luke is the best; he is my soul dog,” Jones said
“We’re going in every couple of months to just see how things are going,” says Jones
“At our last visit they told us it would probably be just a couple more months
That’s why Jones savors each snapshot taken by Bakis
holding onto him,” she directed Jones as she posed with her pet
Lauren shoots the end-of-life sessions for free
“A dog’s only fault is that they never live as long as we want them to
And so whenever they do cross over the rainbow bridge
we have these forever memories to hold on to,” said Bakis
‘This would really be special to have one day,’” Jones says
Bakis has held sessions with dozens of terminally ill dogs. She’s part of a nonprofit network called The Tilly Project that started in Maine and connects pet owners with photographers worldwide
“These are completely 100 percent complimentary,” said Bakis
“When someone tries to offer me payment for these
Lauren photographed Grace and Jon Thompson’s beloved pet
“[Penny will] be remembered in the quiet moments
the way she made us feel and the millions of photos (from countless photoshoots) we have.” Grace said
“We plan to spread her ashes in all of the places that made her tail wag so that whenever we visit those places again
we’ll remember her there and have those happy memories
“You have to love them enough to let them go
because you would never want them to suffer,” Bakis says
I’m think I’m still in nap mode.’ Hi baby boy!” said Bakis
Boone wanted these pictures of Spooky taken before it was too late
“I’m accepting the fact that he’s getting a little older,” she said
“We had to say goodbye to one of my other dogs last year
so I didn’t really get a chance to do that.”
This kind of pro bono work speaks to Bakis
Her two Golden Retrievers inspired the name of her business: Lifeisgolden_photography
that I know one day I’m going to have to do this with my dogs,” she said
She hopes the photos are an emotional visual aid for families
it was important to get some nice pictures of Luke with her children and husband
Bakis stays focused on the picture of unconditional love
“I’m going to remember what an angel Lauren is for doing this,” Jones says
“You never know when your last picture is going to be with someone
