Ruaidhri Higgins ended his playing career at Coleraine
Ex-Derry City boss Ruaidhri Higgins has been named as the new manager of Irish Premiership club Coleraine
Higgins replaces former head coach Dean Shiels and will take charge of the club's European play-off semi-final on Wednesday
left his role as Derry City manager in November following the Candystripes' FAI Cup final defeat by Drogheda United
The 40-year-old was previously assistant manager at Dundalk and a scout with the Football Association of Ireland
The Bannsiders will face either Crusaders or Irish Cup finalists Dungannon Swifts in their midweek play-off
Shiels, along with assistant Michael O'Connor, departed the club on Wednesday after one season at the Showgrounds
He guided the club to a fifth-place finish in the Irish Premiership as the club transitioned into full-time football
Sporting director Oran Kearney, who Shiels replaced as manager, also left his role on Thursday.
Kearney had two spells in charge of the Bannsiders either side of a one-season stint in Scotland as St Mirren manager

The immediate focus is the play-offs — and we'll give everything to finish the season strongly
"I'm also delighted to be bringing Conor Loughrey in alongside me
He's someone I trust and value highly — he'll add real energy and detail to the coaching team."
Executive Chairman and majority shareholder Henry Ross commented: "We're excited to welcome Ruaidhrí to Coleraine at a key moment for the club

RUAIDHRI Higgins spoke exclusively to Coleraine TV after being announced as the club’s new manager on Friday afternoon…
Higgins started his interview by revealing how he is “delighted” to be in the position and that the Bannsiders are a club on the rise.
The Limavady native also gave the low-down on his short-term and long-term aims, as well as how he knows the majority of the squad at his disposal, which he has labelled as “a talented group”.
Higgins played for the Bannsiders during his career and the 40-year-old acknowledged how there’s a huge fan base at the club, with the former midfielder also aiming to develop as many young players as possible.
Rather than solely focusing on a style of play, Higgins stated that the main mission is to “win games” and he delved into the reasons about bringing Conor Loughrey into the club as a coach.
In a message to the fans, Higgins says that he and his staff will do “absolutely everything in our power to continue to grow the club” and how they will try and navigate steps to bring a league title back to The Showgrounds.

Kearney won the Irish Cup in 2018 and the League Cup two years later
as well as three runner-up finishes in the Irish Premiership
He also guided the club to a famous win over NK Maribor in Europa League qualifying in 2020

Ruaidhrí Higgins oversees training at the Coleraine Showgrounds
Ruaidhrí Higgins has officially been appointed as Coleraine's new manager
and he's already brimming with ambition and excitement for the future of the club.
Higgins expressed his delight at the opportunity to join a club that is heading in the right direction
I'm absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity at a club that is going in the right direction," he said
and I think with a few smart additions in the summer window
One of Higgins' immediate goals is to make Coleraine’s home ground a difficult place for teams to visit
saying: "We want to make this place horrible to come
"We want to make it a really difficult place to come to."
Higgins is aiming for European qualification
We definitely have the quality to do that," he said with confidence
can we build a squad and culture here that takes the club to the next level?
Higgins is well aware of the passionate fan base Coleraine has
and he sees the potential for the club to grow even further
"There's only one club in the town and it has a big fan base," he said
and it only grows by being successful on the pitch
So we want to create something here that makes people desperate to get to Coleraine games."
Higgins has already noticed the high professional standards within the squad
and everyone has specific roles," he noted
"If we can continue to develop the culture and professionalism around the place
but the club is certainly going in the right direction."
who has just left the club after a year as manager
Higgins made it clear that he has immense respect for his predecessor
"I think Dean and the club recruited really well in the last window
I think he's an excellent coach and a brilliant person
coming into a brilliant job and taking on the responsibility for somebody I have a lot of respect for."
Higgins also praised the quality of players currently at Coleraine
noting: "There’s a lot of smashing players here
and myself and Connor (Loughrey) are really looking forward to working with them."
Higgins is focused on the European play-offs
where Coleraine’s fate will be decided after tomorrow’s cup final
"You want to be part of the big games," he remarked
and we won’t know who we’ll face until after the cup final tomorrow
but it’s something we really have to look forward to."
"We want to improve on our league position next year," he said
"I think qualifying for Europe has to be the bare minimum
But we need to get to the point where we’re constantly competing with the top sides
and I hope we’ll see that in the very near future."

Dean Shiels has left his position as manager of Coleraine
Head Coach Dean Shiels today departed Coleraine which will lead to former Derry City boss Ruaidhri Higgins becoming the new manager of the north west club
The Belfast Telegraph revealed last week that Higgins was in line to take over should Shiels exit and that will now happen as the wind of change continues to blow through Coleraine like a hurricane
from Coleraine suffered a stroke but music massively aided in his recovery
County Derry man Stephen Farlow suffered a haemorrhagic stroke in 2016 when he was just 36.
Stephen and his wife Pauline were walking in Portstewart looking for a coffee shop and when Pauline stopped to speak to Stephen
Pauline said: “Stephen started speaking like he had stones in his mouth
I got him to the car and could see he was losing strength in his arm as he was trying to put on his seatbelt
By the time I got him to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine his co-ordination had gone
Even though Stephen was told at the time that it was unlikely he would survive the stroke
he could sing easily before he was able to speak again
Stephen was a musician working in a local music shop
had played numerous gigs throughout Northern Ireland and had recorded a number of music albums
Stephen’s family and friends would sing to him and he believes that this helped him to connect with music again
Pauline continued explaining how much music means to Stephen saying: “Stephen played gigs up to six nights a week before his stroke
I worked as a healthcare assistant in the hospital
We were like passing ships in the night at one stage we were just that busy
We always set time aside once a week as our time together
We never had any family so we travelled all over the place and Stephen himself travelled all over the country and Scotland with his music
Whenever we went on holidays if there was a karaoke machine then we would be the first there as stars of the show
He has two post albums recorded post stroke
He has recently just released a new single
So music still plays as big a part in his life as it did pre stroke
He was always very busy with his music pre-stroke and it played a great part in his recovery
I feel if he didn’t have that to focus on then life would be very different for Stephen today
It is scary to think how different it would be
He focused on his music and it brought him to where he is today.
Whatever Stephen can find to do he will do it
What has happened to him and his disability doesn’t hold him back
Some people can’t see past the disability unfortunately
Stephen’s conversation skills are a lot different to his singing skills
You will find that Stephen has difficulty making conversations but when he sings a song the words just flow
They say it is due to the music coming from a different part of the brain
He plays keyboard live with one hand due to his right sided paralysis
He is very successful in playing his keyboard with one hand
He taught himself everything again from scratch.”
Pauline continued saying: “It would be nice if people could see past the disability and the wheelchair
Give him a chance to sing for you rather than just listening to a conversation on the phone and thinking this man can hardly hold a conversation
He needs to be given the chance to improve himself
To the people that have helped him on his road to recovery
Billy McFarland (Irish country singer) was a prime figure in encouraging Stephen to play and sing his music
Hugo Duncan was also great and encouraged him
Hugo actually came out and did an interview with Stephen when he was in his stroke recovery
He always encouraged him and played his music on his show
He helped to keep his name alive and out there
Hopefully Stephen gives other people inspiration to others that have struggled with stroke.”
Speaking on the power of music in aiding his recovery
Stephen said: “Music is my life - it means everything to me
I could only really say a couple of words and they were ‘keyboard’ and ‘guitar’
I was so determined that I was going to be able to perform at concerts again - it was all I wanted to do.”
More than a third of stroke survivors (35%) are able to sing better than speak soon after their stroke
according to new research released by the Stroke Association
The charity surveyed 1,000 stroke survivors to mark Stroke Awareness Month in May and found that a third of survivors (33%) lost the ability to speak after their stroke
while over a third (35%) could sing better than they could speak in the days
a quarter of people (26%) could sing or hum before they could talk at all
over 4,000 people survive a stroke every year
but surviving a stroke is just the start of a long and gruelling recovery journey
Research 2 has shown that singing after stroke can enhance communication and spoken language for people with aphasia
The Stroke Association’s survey found that over half of stroke survivors (54%) said that singing
listening to music or playing an instrument had a positive impact on their stroke recovery
with two in five (40%) saying music had a massive impact on their recovery
almost two thirds of stroke survivors (61%) said that music helped to improve their communication skills after their stroke
while over half (51%) said music helped their memory

Ever tried to substitute your desert island disc choices for favourite things to eat? I do it all the time. And every week my list changes. A while back nothing would do, but I had to have the lobster roll Stevie McCarry used to make before he went all Great British Menu, stopped smoking and became a proper restaurateur with Lir in Coleraine.
The lobster roll in his former parish of Native Seafood in Portstewart made with a golden toasted brioche bun and supported by chopped lettuce and tomato, mayonnaise and sprinkled with paprika and finely chopped chives was worthy of last supper status. Eat that, and your work here is done. It was definitive and perfect.

COLERAINE FC is delighted to announce its application to the Northern Ireland Football Fund for £10 million to support the development of the South Stand at The Showgrounds, transforming the venue into the North West Regional Stadium…
This crucial investment is vital for the club’s future, as the existing Jack Doherty Stand is nearing the end of its lifespan. Without this redevelopment, Coleraine FC could be without a home ground within the next five to ten years. The club’s board has worked tirelessly to ensure the North West Regional Stadium project is fully “shovel-ready,” allowing for swift implementation once funding is secured.
Henry Ross, Executive Chairman and majority shareholder of Coleraine Football Club, emphasised the project’s long-term vision, stating: “The undercroft of the new South Stand will be dedicated to young player development, further strengthening the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent. This initiative is closely linked to the recent investment in the community pitch, which is nearing completion, ensuring a holistic approach to football development in the region.”
With this investment, the club also aspires to establish the North Coast as a key venue for women’s and youth football internationals, further elevating the region’s footballing profile. Additionally, the project will play a crucial role in re-establishing the Super Cup NI as a major global youth tournament, attracting elite young talent from around the world.
Coleraine FC remains steadfast in its ambition to create a state-of-the-art footballing hub for the North West, ensuring the club’s sustainability while providing a premier facility for future generations.

kindly gave up some of his time to discuss the upcoming season as the Bannsiders get set for a return to action…
Coleraine will have two teams competing in the NIWFA football pyramid this season as the Reserve team get under way with a clash away at Antrim Town Swifts tomorrow afternoon in Division 7 (KO 2pm)
the first-team are also scheduled to compete against Maiden City Ladies away from home on Wednesday at Melvin Park Arena in Strabane (KO 7.30pm)
Supporters are encouraged to keep an eye on women’s fixtures
results and news on the club’s Facebook page and website throughout the season
Recruited some good new talent who are ready to learn
The excitement is high for the season ahead
The buzz and camaraderie has been growing due to our Social Football programme
This has led to a high volume of players joining the group
who are keen to play the game and subsequently represent our club both on and off the pitch
In my role it’s crucial to create an environment of positive social connection
physical and mental well-being and psychological safety
so that the players can find their individual level
apply themselves appropriately and see how much they can contribute to the group both on and off the pitch
Some really good players have come onboard – but also some real exceptional additions to the coaching squad – in Adam Shiels
joining the evergreen Simon Moore and Michael Gray
The Foundations within the women’s section of the club is building and this is mirrored in the girls’ youth section with well over 100 girls playing across six age groups
In total we are providing football for well over 150 people and growing our culture through genuine nurture
A very successful Strictly event is another indicator of the interest generated
This is a genuine good news story within the club and community due to plenty of quality participation and wellbeing support
we now have to find a way to add performance quality as well
Think this is a historic move for the club – what was the thinking behind that
The Reserve team is an ambitious move only from the point of view of players wanting to put themselves out there and learn how to compete
A great girl called Emma Diamond from the town was identified and willing to help develop this part of the club and Simon Moore has stepped up to devote his time and knowledge to building the process
It’s a natural progression to the player pathway from youth to senior club
so when numbers and group commitment was good
I have insisted on integrated training especially in this formative stage of club building as the players psychological safety is vital
especially in a world of social media toxicity
It’s all about progression and that’s what my primary focus is
The willingness is there – so let’s give it a go
It’s a privilege to be part of this development
What are the hopes and aspirations for the season ahead
The aspirations for the season is to keep upward momentum going in terms of participation
coach development and interest generated amongst the fan base as we build this part of the club over next seasons
I am excited to see how far forward we can go on our journey as part of the club
Any supporters or supporters’ group that want to help us out would be most welcome
Everyone that can make a positive contribution – no matter how small they feel it is – can make a huge difference in terms of adding to and building a positive environment that these players deserve and will help them fulfil their potential and ultimately lift the Club profile in the female game
