the late land artist Charles Jencks created Crawick Multiverse out of an ugly open-cast mine in southern Scotland
it is an inspiring exploration of the universe
The sun warms my face as I pause between the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies to gaze at the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway beyond. I am not, surprisingly enough, in outer space. I’m at the Crawick Multiverse
a cosmos-themed land art installation in the south of Scotland that was built on the site of an old open-cast coal mine and is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year
their perimeters reaching out towards one another but never quite touching
“These galaxies are slowly moving towards each other
and eventually they’ll collide,” says Gillian Khosla
it will be the end of our universe.” Thankfully
We stroll around the grounds and watch as visitors climb the mounds
looping around the spirals to reach the sandstone boulders on top
who are less interested in the cosmological ideas of the art than the fact it happens to double up rather well as an obstacle course

a local farmer and Crawick Multiverse trustee
or it can be a nice place to come for a coffee – or to roll down some hills with your kids.”
The coal mine that once operated here was shut and abandoned in the 1980s, when the “black gold” ran out. The land is owned by the Duke of Buccleuch – one of Scotland’s largest landowners. In 2005, he invited the late land artist Charles Jencks to transform it
“Everything was removed that was worth money and nothing was left
What open-cast coal mining tended to do was take

nature and add value to the communityGillian KhoslaMcMillan lived in a house overlooking the site for much of the development
“Now it’s green and there’s a lot more biodiversity – ponds and dragonflies
It’s created jobs and it’s somewhere people bring people now; family and friends.”
Above it all, the Belvedere viewpoint offers sweeping 360-degree vistas of this eclectic 22-hectare (55-acre) site
where megaliths pose cosmological conundrums amid the farmland and hills of the Nith valley
“Charles wanted to make this a place people would come to from all over the world
and we’re starting to go down that track now,” says McMillan

and families run among superclusters and climb on rocky comets
This remains a little-visited part of Scotland
which is particularly apparent in early spring
with the sun shining and daffodils disrupting the greenery
Some old coal bings (piles of waste rocks) are still visible beyond the boundary walls

Kirkconnel had a population of about 5,000 or 6,000
A’ the Airts has a busy programme of music, film and poetry – some of it inspired by that mining legacy – as well as workshops on quilting, pottery and the distinctive Sanquhar knitting pattern
“I think one of the redeeming features of a mining village anywhere is the community spirit,” Williamson says
Everybody pulls together.” Green shoots sprout from mined land
Sanquhar is a picturesque town with a long history
On the edge is the ruin of a 13th-century castle where Scotland’s national hero William Wallace is said to have battled the English and Robert the Bruce is also believed to have visited
The poet Rabbie Burns frequented the town in the 1780s
Sanquhar is also home to the oldest working post office in the world
The story of such Scottish legends is told at the Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum
which is to be found in an 18th-century baroque building on the high street that also houses old Davy lamps and mining pickaxes

I spend a comfy night at the Nithsdale hotel before continuing my journey on the Southern Upland Way – a hiking route running 214 miles
coast-to-coast across the south of Scotland
The trail turned 40 last year and marked that anniversary with sculpted way markers, which were installed at the start and end of the three sections (western
middle and eastern) that make up the trail
Sanquhar marks the end of the western Spirit of Galloway segment and the beginning of The Big Hills section through the centre of Scotland. I’m walking the eight miles to Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland and home to the Museum of Lead Mining
which offers the only underground mine tour in Scotland
and I follow a farm road steeply out of Sanquhar as a dawn chorus of song thrushes
robins and wrens sing to welcome in the day

Barcelona (1:09)Gab Marcotti praises Inter Milan's "brave" performance away at Barcelona in their UCL semifinal first leg game vs
BARCELONA, Spain -- Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries returned and so did the goals for Inter Milan
Dumfries scored two and set up the opener for Thuram as Inter drew 3-3 at Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal on Wednesday
it was a difficult period for me because of the injury but now I'm back," Dumfries told broadcaster Amazon Prime
Inter had lost their previous three matches without scoring a goal -- the first time that had happened in more than 13 years. That run had seen it surrender their Serie A lead and exit the Italian Cup
Thuram had missed those three matches with a left thigh injury
Dumfries had been sidelined for even longer
missing eight matches with a hamstring problem before returning as a late substitute last weekend
The duo immediately showed Inter what it had been missing as Thuram back-heeled in a cross by Dumfries to stun Barcelona just seconds after kickoff
Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries inspired Inter Milan to a thrilling draw with Barcelona. Giuseppe Bellini/Getty ImagesIt was Thuram's 18th goal of the season for Inter
Dumfries then doubled Inter's lead in the 21st minute with a bicycle kick
He became the first Dutch player to both score and assist in a Champions League semifinal since Wesley Sneijder -- coincidentally also for Inter against Barcelona
Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres hauled the hosts level shortly before halftime but Dumfries notched his second in the 64th
heading home a corner kick to put Inter back ahead
However, Barcelona were quickly back level when Raphinha's blistering shot from outside the top of the box struck the crossbar and ricocheted in off the back of Yann Sommer
going down as an own goal by the Inter goalkeeper
"I think after three straight defeats we saw the real Inter
"Obviously we wanted to win but I think it was a good game and everything's still open
The second leg will be next week in Milan. The winner will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal in Munich on May 31
PSG beat Arsenal 1-0 in London on Tuesday in their first match

He said: “Protecting the public is at the heart of everything we do
and this is another example of the great partnerships between emergency services benefiting our communities
“We also understand that the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team is a volunteer-led charity
and we are happy to play our part in assisting their work where we can
“This is an important resource which has been made available to increase rescue capabilities within the Dumfries and Galloway area
“Co-location of services also brings opportunities for regular joint working
James Coles is Moffat Mountain Rescue Team Leader
He said: “Moffat Mountain Rescue Team would like to thank the SFRS for the offer to house one of the team's vehicles inside Lockerbie Community Fire Station
This gives the team additional flexibility in the storage and deployment of the team's vehicles
“Moffat Mountain Rescue team has three vehicles with options to have them located in Moffat
Dumfries (courtesy of Police Scotland) and in the team's base in Moffat
“Moffat Mountain Rescue Team responds to incidents to search for missing people and rescue people in distress in hill and rural areas across the eastern side of Dumfries and Galloway and up into Lanarkshire.”

Denzel Dumfries hits an "out of this world" finish to double Inter's lead as Barcelona are stunned early on in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg
Dumfries and Galloway Council has released a contract notice seeking a qualified and experienced consultant to support its Whitesands Flood Protection Scheme and Public Realm Improvements project
is aimed at engaging a single consultant through a two-stage process: Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) followed by the Main Works Construction
The project is intended to address the chronic flooding issues in the Whitesands area of Dumfries
which has recorded over 200 flood incidents historically
with the most severe event occurring in December 2022
first proposed in 2017 after years of discussions
glass panels and flood gates intended to reduce flood risk substantially
Stage 1 of the contract focuses on Early Contractor Involvement
during which the appointed consultant will provide construction-focused advice through the detailed design phase
The consultant will collaborate closely with scheme designers to ensure constructability
improve efficiency and generate a comprehensive report detailing methodologies and considerations for the project’s delivery
Stage 2 encompasses the Main Works Construction
where the chosen supplier will lead delivery on site
overseeing pivotal aspects such as health and safety management
traffic management and planning and licence condition discharge
The total duration for the contract is anticipated to be 36 months
Interested parties must submit tenders or requests to participate by 27 May
The Whitesands project, originally slated for completion in 2020 or 2021, faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic but the council has opted to move forward despite budget increase from £25M to £37.5M
Jacobs and the council have also commenced bat surveys from today
These include daytime surveys to complete preliminary roost assessments that will inform how they set up that evening
The ecologists will use specialist equipment such as thermal cameras
infra-red cameras and bat detectors from dusk and continue 1.5 to 2 hours from sunset
The surveys will mostly take place on public land along the River Nith at 17 separate locations where the potential for bat activity is likely
The Whitesands Flood Protection Scheme area starts just north of the rowing club and extends as far south as Dock Park
The main construction contract award is planned for March 2026
with building work set to commence shortly thereafter
aiming to deliver significant flood protection and public realm enhancements to the vulnerable Whitesands area

Glasgow architect New Practice has been chosen to lead on a feasibility study for the restoration of an abandoned Victorian mill in Dumfries
The firm will now explore options for restoring the Category B-listed former Rosefield Mills
for the Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT)
It will look at how the 140-year-old building can become a mixed-use community asset with commercial uses
New Practice’s work will include community engagement
and carrying out market assessments in partnership with DHBT to secure a further round of funding for the next stage of the development
DHBT says its long-term vision for the buildings and wider site include a ‘sympathetic repair and sustainable reuse’ of the mills
with ‘huge scope for both the repair and reuse of the remaining architectural heritage’
The trust adds that the mill’s transformation could lead to the creation of a ‘new creative neighbourhood through an outstanding piece of new mixed-use urban design that could include a variety of community
housing and business uses’ on the wider site
The complex is considered to be one of the last remaining large-scale Victorian industrial buildings in Dumfries
25 miles north of the Scottish-English border
Architecture and design studio GRAS has already carried out a conservation statement and spatial study of the site
Both GRAS and New Practice were chosen through a tender on Public Contracts Scotland
plans will be submitted to redevelop the building based on New Practice and GRAS’s work
Last year, New Practice, which is women and LGBTQ+-led, was acquired by Civic

An outswinging Federico Dimarco corner was met by the head of Francesco Acerbi, and played into the path of Dumfries, who was able to pull out an overhead kick in a congested Barcelona penalty area to send the Nerazzurri 2-0 up
who had been an injury doubt minutes before kick-off

Champions League highlights: Barcelona 3-3 Inter Milan
Barcelona twice came from behind against Inter Milan to snatch a draw in a six-goal first-leg thriller to leave their Champions League semi-final finely poised
Inter stunned the hosts after just 30 seconds when Marcus Thuram turned in Denzel Dumfries' low cross with an audacious backheel flick to score the fastest goal in a last-four game in the competition's history
Dutch full-back Dumfries doubled the visitors' lead with a stunning acrobatic volley 20 minutes later and it looked like Barca had a mountain to climb at Montjuic Olympic Stadium
magnificent Lamine Yamal pulled out his box of tricks to transform the game
He struck a wonderful 24th-minute reply as he drifted inside and skipped past several defenders before unleashing a sumptuous left-foot finish that kissed the post before landing in the net
Yamal was at the heart of everything Barca did
but marked his 100th appearance for the club with a 22nd goal to add to his 33 assists at the age of just 17
Ferran Torres capped off an enthralling first half with a 38th-minute equaliser for the hosts
stabbing home from close range after Raphinha headed down Pedri's crossfield ball
But the impressive Dumfries scored his second of the night in the 63rd minute to restore Inter's lead when he rose highest to meet Hakan Calhanoglu's corner
But Barca again responded in style and levelled just two minutes later when a stunning 25-yard strike from Raphinha clattered the bar
via a touch off Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer's back
The breathless affair leaves the tie in the balance
with the second leg on Tuesday at the San Siro in Milan
'A talent that comes along every 50 years' - 'genius' Yamal steals show
Thuram's flick stuns Barcelona after 30 seconds
Fifteen years on from the last time these sides met in a Champions League knockout match – where Jose Mourinho's Inter upset Pep Guardiola's Barca - the two European giants served up another scintillating semi-final
Many have suggested Barca cannot win the trophy playing this all-out attacking style and dangerous high line
Yet few will argue it does not make for entertaining football
Inter's two early goals left the home support shellshocked but Barca
aiming to reach their first Champions League final in a decade
kept their composure and followed the lead of Yamal to get back into the game
The teenager may have this week rejected being likened to legendary Barca forward Lionel Messi
but this dazzling display will have done nothing to silence those comparisons as he took centre stage
After scoring his fifth goal of this Champions League campaign
Yamal was at the forefront of Barca's attacking play in the absence of the injured Robert Lewandowski
but Sommer's superb fingertip save pushed the effort on to the woodwork
Yamal also whipped another strike later that beat the Inter keeper
dragged a shot wide and flashed another across the face of goal
before finding the equaliser before the break
Dani Olmo was also denied by Sommer after powering in a low effort as Barca created several chances to show they could overturn Inter's lead
who arrived into the tie on the back of three consecutive defeats
Henrikh Mkhitaryan thought he had a fourth goal for Inter when he poked home at the back post
with the semi-automated system showing the narrowest of margins
It was a fascinating encounter between two opposing styles of play and
while Barca know they have the firepower to outscore their opponents
Inter will take confidence from scoring three goals against a defence with clear frailties
fresh from lifting their first trophy under the German after victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey on Saturday
will enjoy a mouthwatering prospect in Milan

Head coach Ruben Amorim is working with recruitment chiefs Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell to kickstart a squad rebuild this summer
centre-half and goalkeeper are just some of the positions that could be strengthened
As per Italian outlet Inter Live
United have set their sights on Inter in their bid to improve what is a lacklustre squad
The Red Devils have identified Dutch wing-back Dumfries and German centre-back Yann Bisseck as new targets
It is claimed that Amorim and United are ‘serious’ about landing the pair and have prepared a ‘mind-blowing’ double bid worth €100m to secure their services
That includes a €60m (£51m / $68m) proposal for Bisseck and €40m (£34m / $45.5m) for Dumfries
having tracked him during Erik ten Hag’s time in charge at Old Trafford
Indeed, TEAMtalk revealed last August that United were considering Dumfries as a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right side of defence
It seems United are back on the Netherlands star’s trail as Amorim hunts a right wing-back who is better in the final third than Diogo Dalot
having registered eight goals this season – five more than Dalot

The 24-year-old is emerging as one of the most coveted defenders in Europe’s top five leagues. United are now in the mix, as was first revealed on Sunday
Sources informed TEAMtalk last week that Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Everton and Bournemouth are all keen on Bisseck, too
We understand that Inter could actually sell Bisseck for £30-34m
far less than the £51m bid United have drawn up
Meanwhile, Amorim’s side have reportedly offered an elite striker £13m a year
TEAMtalk can confirm that United have sent Matheus Cunha a contract offer too as they push to seal a deal for the Wolverhampton Wanderers hitman
But his potential signing will have big ramifications for one United player
By Nathan Egerton
Bisseck initially played for SV Adler Dellbruck before joining FC Koln at the age of seven
The centre-back represented Germany at the 2017 Under-17 World Cup and scored in a 4-0 win over Colombia in the round of 16
He made his first-team debut in November 2017 at the age of 16 years and 11 months
making him the youngest player in Koln’s history and the eighth-youngest player to appear in the Bundesliga
The German had loan spells at Holstein Kiel
Vitoria de Guimaraes and Aarhus before joining the latter on a permanent deal in 2021
After impressing in the Danish top-flight and captaining Germany at the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship
he completed a €7million move to Inter Milan
The 23-year-old made 21 appearances in all competitions in his debut season in Italy as Inter won the Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2023/24
“He’s a young guy who’s growing very well,” Inter manager Simone Inzaghi said
“We’re fortunate to have players like that
Bisseck possesses pace and power in abundance and has been compared to former Real Madrid and Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane

Barcelona 3-3 Inter Milan – INTERViews Podcast Ep
142: “Respect & Apologize To Denzel Dumfries” | OneFootballSempreInter.Com
This is the INTERViews podcast, the official SempreInter.com podcast, discussing all things Nerazzurri, today focusing on Barcelona 3-3 Inter Milan leg 1 semifinal Champions League clash
analyze and debate all aspects of the 3-3 draw.
Inter fielded their strongest lineup. Therefore, Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella both started
Everyone expected Barcelona to start on the front foot
it was impressive when Marcus Thuram broke the deadlock after just 30 or so seconds
The provider turned finisher when Denzel Dumfries scored a wondergoal in the 21st minute
Federico Dimarco’s corner was headed by Francesco Acerbi towards goal
which the Dutchman buried with a stunning roundhouse volley kick
Unfortunately, three minutes later Lamine Yamal produced a moment of magic after Marcus Thuram
Federico Dimarco and Henrikh Mkhitaryan lapsed in their defensive duties without possession
Barcelona’s 2-2 equalizer was very avoidable
Francesco Acerbi and Yann Bisseck were ball-watching allowing Ferran Torres to finish off a Raphina header
Inter solid defensively throughout the first half
RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA – JANUARY 02: Denzel Dumfries of FC Internazionale celebrates scoring his team’s second goal during the Italian Super Cup Semi-Final match between FC Internazionale and Atalanta at Al Awwal Park on January 02
Inter continued to defend well in the second half
Inter defended far too deep from the offset
This followed after Inter created a couple of chances but couldn’t retake the lead
Federico Dimarco squandered a fantastic chance
Barcelona continued to create chances and dominate possession
However, in the 63rd minute MOTM Denzel Dumfries latched on to a Hakan Calhanoglu corner
two minutes later Barcelona equalized after Raphinha scored a screamer which was noted as a Yann Sommer owngoal
This as the Raphina screamer went in off the cross bar and the Swiss goalkeeper’s back for the equalizer
In conclusion, Inter probably could and should have won. This as a Henrikh Mhitaryan goal was adjudged to have been offside by the smallest of margins by VAR
So sit back, relax and join the INTERViews podcast boys as they break down the Inter Milan 3-3 draw away to Barcelona

Barcelona and Inter shared six goals in a classic of a Champions League semi-final first leg at Montjuic
Inter went ahead within 30 seconds from an audacious Marcus Thuram backheel before Denzel Dumfries put them 2-0 up in the 21st minute with an acrobatic finish following an outswinging corner
But Lamine Yamal then dragged Barca back into the game with an extraordinary piece of skill in the 24th minute
And Barca were level in the 38th minute when a Pedri ball over the top was headed down by Raphinha into the path of Ferran Torres
Inter went back ahead in the 64th minute with another outswinging corner headed home by Dumfries — but Barca responded with their own corner-kick routine
with Yamal dummying for Raphinha to crash a shot in off the bar (via goalkeeper Yann Sommer)
And there was still time for a Henrikh Mkhitaryan goal to be ruled out for the tightest of offside calls and Yamal’s cross-shot to somehow hit the bar
Dermot Corrigan and Liam Tharme analyse the key talking points and where it leaves things ahead of the second leg at San Siro on Tuesday
Some football matches are easy enough to analyse
A team of forensic experts would take weeks to properly pick through the ashes
It was that the evening left us with precisely zero certainty about anything whatsoever
knitting patterns that Inter couldn’t parse
Pedri ran the match like it was a card game in his basement; Yamal was so consistently dangerous it was actually funny
meekly allowing Inter to race into the lead and then repeating the trick in the second half
just when they looked certain to take control themselves
There is no shame in putting 11 men behind the ball
The problem was that the midfield was a complete non-factor: Henrikh Mkhitaryan spent the game trying — failing
while Nicolo Barella contributed little beyond a couple of periods of sustained pointing
A half-fit Marcus Thuram managed to do some damage but there was little fluency to their play
And yet they go home to Milan on level terms
Barcelona will spend the next week trying to work that out
The Catalans will at least be buoyed by the guts they showed getting back into the match
suddenly burst into life around 75 minutes and might easily have scored a fourth
Now be a pal and give me another hit on the defibrillator
It felt like rewatching Inter in 2023 all over again
Inter scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the Champions League semi-final first-leg ‘away’ to city rivals Milan
one goal was from a trademark vertical move and wing-back low cross
Thuram’s opener after 30 seconds was the fastest in a semi-final in competition history
It had special significance for the 27-year-old given his father Lilian ended his career at Barca from 2006-2008 and was sitting in the VIP box at Montjuic
Inter went short and played back from the kick-off to bait a Barcelona press
before centre-back Francesco Acerbi kicked long
Thuram tapped it into Barella’s path and he released far-side wing-back Dumfries
This is a trademark Inter move to hit long and connect between the two strikers before releasing a wing-back
Dumfries’ first cross — for left wing-back Federico Dimarco
Barella reworked the angle and Thuram had caught up
arriving to backheel Dumfries’ dipping cross in at the near post
It made it four European goals this term for Thuram
half as many as club captain Lautaro (eight)
But it was also an example of how dangerous a role those forwards play in the build-up for their own goals
Inter’s corner to double their lead followed the same textbook outswinger they have used to great effect this season
with Dumfries acrobatically volleying in Acerbi’s header towards goal — their 14th goal from a corner in all competitions this term
Inter had stunned this treble-chasing team and their supporters — but Barca responded in style
There did not seem much trouble for Inter when Yamal picked up the ball
with 10 Inter players between him and the goal
A burst of pace took him around a pretty static Mkhitaryan
with four defenders relatively close to the teenager as he approached the penalty area
But Yamal continued to advance at high pace and then chose his moment perfectly
using central defender Bastoni as a screen and curling the ball into the net via the far post
leaving Inter keeper Yann Sommer with zero chance of making a save
which was even more impressive in the circumstances — with Barca 2-0 down following Inter’s fast start
Yamal had also given Barca fans a huge scare by appearing to pick up a problem in the warm-up
holding his groin while speaking with a club physio and then disappearing down the tunnel less than 20 minutes before kick-off
But he took his place in the starting line-up for his 100th Barca appearance, becoming the second youngest player ever to start a Champions League semi-final at 17 years and 291 days old, only beaten by Schalke’s Julian Draxler against Manchester United in 2011
He now has 22 goals and 33 assists over that century of Barca games — including a pair of assists to help win last Saturday’s fierce Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid
the most impressive of all could be the character he shows to do something special when his team really needs it — like he did when he struck another scarcely believable effort against France for Spain in last year’s European Championship semi-final with his team 1-0 down
it was their youngest player who pulled them back into the game
He set up chances for team-mates Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo
and almost scored a second wondergoal himself two minutes after his first effort
dribbling past two defenders before Sommer pulled off a fantastic finger-tip save to divert his shot onto the woodwork
He hit the woodwork again late in the second half after earlier showing supreme skill when he left two Inter players in his wake
but he could well already be the best player in the world
The idea of set pieces deciding big European matches is something of a cliche — but it was proved true here
with three of the six goals coming via that route
Inter scored twice from their first two corners — that they only had two in the first 63 minutes is a sign of how counter-attacking and defensively they ended up playing the game
The delivery was almost identical both times
a whipped right-footed ball from the right by Hakan Calhanoglu
Dumfries was first to meet a header towards goal by Acerbi to make it 0-2
with Barcelona defending particularly man-to-man against a tall Inter team — and one that always maintains a set-piece threat because they play three centre-backs
two strikers and have technicians aplenty in central midfield
Barca goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was clearly mindful of stopping the source for Inter’s third goal and tried to claim the outswinger but missed
having swept up well in open play a few times earlier in the second half
It left Dumfries with the simple task of outjumping Dani Olmo at the back post and heading into an empty net
with lone zonal marker Ronald Araujo not able to get across in time — and made Dumfries the first Dutchman to be involved in three goals in a Champions League semi-final (two goals
With a starting XI 1.5 centimetres shorter on average than Inter’s
Barcelona’s equaliser — just two minutes after Inter went 3-2 up — was never going to be an outswinging corner for an aerial finish like Inter scored twice from
the bodies in the box became decoys and they went short for Raphinha to rifle from distance
His clean strike got the bit of luck it needed when it hit the bar and went in off Sommer’s back
It already felt like the closing stages of a second leg
with Inter not at all settling in to hold onto the draw which they could take back to San Siro next week
Before the away-goals rule was discontinued by UEFA in summer 2021 — meaning away goals were the decider in two-legged ties which finished in an aggregate draw — teams who were 3-3 up were generally very happy to keep that scoreline
or 2-2 draw in the return game would be enough for them to progress
Jose Mourinho’s Inter team who won at Barca on the way to the 2010 Champions League trophy and the treble would definitely have been in ‘what we have
who kept flowing forward — even after Raphinha’s equaliser had appeared to swing the momentum back Barca’s way
Current coach Simone Inzaghi made positive substitutions
and his team continued to look to try and exploit Barca’s rocky defensive high line
Barca experienced a let-off when the officials did not punish an apparent handball by Inigo Martinez when he seemed the deepest of their defenders
And they escaped again when Inter got behind them again and only the narrowest of offside calls
It made for tremendous drama — and if the scrapping of the away goals rule had any part in the entertainment
“He is special,” Flick said of Yamal in his post-match press conference
when I looked at the match from the outside
you see all the details and it is unbelievable how he does it
“For me the best thing is that he keeps going strong
Raphinha also spoke to Spanish broadcaster Movistar
“Our feeling is that we could have had a much better result,” the Brazil forward said
But we also have to admit that Inter played very well
We tried our best but the important thing is we have a result where anything can still happen
“For us it’s important we keep playing the same way
“We have 90 more minutes and hopefully it’s enough to be in the final.”
“There were excellent moments today but times where we suffered too,” he said, as reported by UEFA.com
“We were facing a great team in the form of Barcelona
But now they know they’re facing a great side in Inter next week
We had to mark Lamine Yamal even better — that guy really impacted on me tonight
I’m really enthusiastic about what my lads did

The Transforming Scotland’s Indoor Tennis (TSIT) project at the King George V sports complex in Dumfries took another significant step forward today as construction started on the three-court centre
The tennis centre is scheduled to open later in the year
it will provide a base for the sport in Dumfries and Galloway and the many rural communities in the area
accessible and affordable facility providing more opportunities for people to play tennis
Construction starting marks another important landmark in the ongoing work to improve year-round access to tennis across the country
It will be the third indoor tennis centre built in Scotland recently
Centres in Edinburgh and Elgin have opened since the end of 2023
meaning the TSIT fund will have helped build 13 indoor courts in that time when the Dumfries centre opens its doors
Cllr Maureen Johnstone and Cllr Lynne Davis visited the site as the diggers moved in
A representative from Tennis Dumfries & Galloway also attended the event
Nearly £1.7million of funding from the Transforming Scottish Indoor Tennis fund, operated by the LTA, LTA Tennis Foundation, sportscotland and Tennis Scotland
That amount includes a £211,347 loan to Dumfries and Galloway Council
the council has provided nearly £500,000 with the total cost of the project set to be £2,361,937
A challenging financial climate and increased costs in the construction industry caused a rise in the total cost of the facility from original projections
the organisations involved put in a concerted effort to find additional funding to ensure the project went ahead
a local charity which helps young people in the area
are making a significant contribution of £200,000
Today’s ground-breaking reaffirms the shared commitment of the TSIT partners – LTA
sportscotland and Tennis Scotland – to meet the demand for indoor tennis facilities across the country
There is already a strong tennis infrastructure in the area with 11 registered clubs and close to 1000 playing members
but playing time is greatly reduced in the winter with play on outdoor courts weather dependant
The new centre will provide opportunities to grow participation among all ages and abilities throughout the year
The plans will include a raised viewing area
office space and accessible changing areas
TSIT is designed to support innovative and creative projects to meet local demand and fill the geographical gaps in indoor tennis provision that currently exist across Scotland
TSIT is the largest capital investment programme in the sport’s history in Scotland and the aim is to create more and better opportunities to play tennis all year round
The four-court £1.63m centre in Elgin
and the £4.5m six-court Oriam Indoor Tennis Centre in Edinburgh are both seeing high numbers of players since opening in recent months
Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Education
Skills and Community Wellbeing Committee Chair
Cllr Maureen Johnstone said: “I’m delighted to see this project moving forward
Our Council has committed half a million pounds towards the costs and this clear commitment is a strong sign of the importance we place on this facility
Having such an accessible facility in our largest town in the region will not only be excellent for local tennis players
Skills and Community Wellbeing Committee Vice Chair
Cllr Lynne Davis commented: “I would like to thank the key partners and stakeholders who have been on this journey with us and allowed for this work to commence
Without partnership working across all sectors
we would not be able to offer up such a wonderful facility
that will be a huge asset to the region in the short
There is a real enthusiasm around the project
said: “Our aim with the TSIT fund was to improve year-round access to tennis in key areas across Scotland and this is a significant milestone in that journey
I look forward to seeing the impact it has for the local communities and for the sport.”
“These are exceptionally challenging times for everyone
and I must commend our partners for their continued commitment to delivering on our shared ambition to improve indoor tennis facilities across Scotland
"This is not just about the bricks and mortar; it’s about creating an environment where people can enjoy the sport of tennis and progress to whatever level they aspire to.”
CEO of the LTA said: “We are delighted that construction for this important tennis facility in Dumfries is now underway
The LTA is committed to investing in Scotland
and more indoor facilities are vital to our ambition to open up tennis to new audiences
“This new project in Dumfries and Galloway will be a wonderful addition to the existing network of community indoor tennis centres across Scotland
These facilities play a pivotal role in supporting the physical and mental health of people in their local communities
This will enable more people to play throughout the winter months and provide much needed facilities to all the rural communities in the area.’’
“We look forward to continuing to collaborate with our partners to drive greater visibility and engagement in tennis and to get more people playing the sport.’’
said: “It’s exciting to see work starting on the new indoor tennis centre in Dumfries & Galloway
This is a significant moment for the ongoing expansion of facilities across Scotland
ensuring year-round access to tennis for new and existing players
whether it’s to compete and improve or just for fun
“We want to make tennis accessible to everyone right across Scotland and
having already opened new centres in Edinburgh and Elgin over the past year
this facility will provide further momentum for our growing sport
which is inspiring more people than ever to pick up a racket
“Thank you to all our partners the LTA
sportscotland, Dumfries & Galloway Council and Holywood Trust for their hard work on this project and we look forward to the new centre opening soon.”

Player ratings: Barcelona 3-3 Inter – Exceptional Dumfries matched by Yamal | OneFootballFootball Italia
Denzel Dumfries was involved in all three of Inter’s goals in a 3-3 draw away against a Lamine-Yamal-inspired Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final: A match that will surely go down as one of the greatest games in any competition this season
Inter stormed to an early 2-0 lead through Marcus Thuram and Dumfries, but were pegged back to 2-2 before the half-time interval. Three players were forced off due to injury by that point, including Inter captain Lautaro Martinez
Dumfries struck again midway through the second half
only for Raphinha to hit a thunderbolt off the crossbar
which went down as a Yann Sommer own goal just over a minute later
Here are the player ratings from a memorable night in Catalonia
Barcelona vs. Inter: Champions League Semi-Final 1st leg Liveblog
Sommer 6 – A tough night for the Switzerland international
who was beaten by a mesmerising Lamine Yamal finish
was helpless for Ferran Torres’s second and went home with an own goal against him after a Raphinha thunderbolt rebounded off the crossbar
onto the keeper’s back and then into the net
Bisseck 5.5 – Raphinha was the German’s biggest threat positionally
and the fact that the Brazilian scored from the edge of the area following a corner means that he was not at fault
Acerbi 6 – Tasked with going man-to-man with Ferran Torres for the majority of the game
but was unable to stop the Spaniard from making it 2-2 in the second half
although the attacking move that led to the equaliser was hardly his fault
Bastoni 5 – Wasn’t able to make himself big enough to stop Lamine Yamal’s strike from hitting the back of the net in the first half: Bastoni and Mkhitaryan might have done a bit better to stop the teeanager
but it was a wonderful goal in fairness to him
Dumfries 9 – Dreamland for the Dutchman in Barcelona on an individual level
Back from injury after missing almost six weeks of action to net two goals and provide a brilliant assist from right wing-back: His first goal involvements in the Champions League this season
BARCELONA, SPAIN – APRIL 30: Denzel Dumfries of FC Internazionale scores his team’s second goal whilst under pressure from Pedri and Frenkie de Jong of FC Barcelona during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Semi Final First Leg match between FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on April 30
Barella 6 – Had his work cut out for him in what was a non-stop battle in the middle of the park up against Pedri
but not the most influential game of his career
Calhanoglu 5 – By his usual high standards, it was a relatively poor night for the Nerazzurri midfield conductor
Unconvincing and hooked after 70 minutes in favour of Davide Frattesi
Mkhitaryan 5 – Needed to do better to stop Yamal before he broke into the area for his first-half goal
A tactical foul and yellow card would have been a wise decision in this instance
Offside by the slightest of margins for his goal that would have set the scores at 4-3
Dimarco 5 – Sent in the corner that led to Dumfries’s first goal of the night
Not afforded the time or space to excel like he does in games against lesser opposition
but that was to be expected against one of the strongest teams in the world
Lautaro Martinez 6 – A worrying night for the Nerazzurri captain
who was forced off at the half-time break with an apparent thigh injury
who was unable to live up to the skipper’s standards
BARCELONA, SPAIN – APRIL 30: Marcus Thuram of FC Internazionale scores his team’s first goal whilst under pressure from Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi of FC Barcelona during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Semi Final First Leg match between FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on April 30
Thuram 7.5 – It could not have got off to a better start for the Frenchman, who found the back of the net with an improvised flick after just 30 seconds of action in Barcelona. Inter’s most threatening attacker all night on his return from injury. The Nerazzurri had lost all of their last three matches while he was out injured
BARCELONA, SPAIN – APRIL 30: Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona celebrates scoring his team’s first goal during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Semi Final First Leg match between FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on April 30

An aerial view of Quantico Creek in Dumfries
The creek was a major commercial port in colonial times but has been closed to public access for decades
A view of Quantico Creek from the back of homes along Possum Point Road
Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood is spearheading the plan for the town to redevelop its historic waterfront area along Quantico Creek for a public park and possibly commercial development
An aerial view of Quantico Creek facing the Potomac River
The mouth of Quantico Creek in Dumfries is now home to an aging industrial park that's encircled by chain-link fencing and closed to the public
The town recently entered into a contract to purchase 160 acres along the waterfront for $3.9 million
the Dumfries waterfront is completely hidden behind a chain-link fence
a gravel industrial lot and a dense thicket of shrubs
a gravel industrial lot and a dense thicket of shrubs and trees
and a lot of people don’t even know that they’re even this close to a body of water," Wood said of Quantico Creek
which is not far from the Williamstown community and other residential areas
"It’s been underutilized by a community that’s been underserved,” he added
“The community that’s here has been denied access to this beautiful resource because there’s been no type of investment in this body of water.”
The state of the waterfront today is a far cry from how the property appeared in the late 18th century
when it was part of the busiest port in the South
Dumfries rivaled New York and Boston in the amount of iron
tobacco and other crops that were shipped from its shores
But that ended by the start of the 19th century
when the port became filled with silt that eroded from nearby plantations
making the port inaccessible to large boats
the former port has been an industrial backlot where Campbell Brothers’ construction company dumped truckloads of dirt generated by projects in nearby Dale City
The work further obscured Quantico Creek and kept its banks inaccessible to nearby residents
But with money cobbled together from America Rescue Plan Act and new revenue generated by The Rose gaming resort
the town council decided in December to spend $3.9 million to buy 160 acres on Colonial Port Road to recreate “the Town of Dumfries Waterfront District.”
a dock for kayaks and canoes and perhaps some restaurants and multi-family homes
The hope is to restore Dumfries’ maritime roots by restoring public access to Quantico Creek
Dumfries is the oldest continuously chartered town in Virginia
But its 6,000 residents have lagged behind the rest of the county in resources for years
The town is about evenly divided between white
Black and Latino residents but has a median income of only $79,000 a year
significantly less than the county’s $129,000
The discrepancy has meant that only those with the means to buy waterfront property have had access to the water
That’s why he’s been working toward the goal of reclaiming the Dumfries port since he was first elected mayor in 2018
the late owner of Campbell Brothers Construction
Campbell came to Wood several years ago with extensive plans for the site that included a museum and a new town hall
But Campbell was seeking a higher price for the land
his family remained interested in fulfilling their dad’s dream and agreed last year to sell the land for $3.9 million – an amount that matched an independent appraisal of the property
said his dad would be glad to see the land finally return to the town and to the residents of Dumfries
“He was a real history buff,” Scott Campbell said
“He always wanted to make sure that whoever acquired the property would bring all the historical aspects to the development
I think it would really benefit the town for the residents to see what it was like back in the 1700s.”
A vibrant public waterfront is likely still several years away
is contingent on an environmental assessment to inform the town about any environmental remediation needed to ready the property for new construction
The town has also taken steps to create an economic development authority to study possible private partnerships and to seek state and federal grants
The town is still taking applications for the authority’s board of directors
which it hopes will be appointed by midyear
The town also received a $1 million federal grant
which it hopes to use to clean up the former industrial park
the town has not dedicated money to creating a boardwalk or a park
the town is also recruiting residents who have long advocated for the town to take advantage of Quantico Creek to help with the planning
whose home backs to the creek on Possum Point Road
Thrall was part of “Friends of Quantico Creek,” an organization that has lobbied the town and the county to take better care of it
She called the town’s plan “a wonderful idea that’s long overdue.”
Although the creek stretches all the way to the Potomac River
its navigation is limited by a railroad bridge that allows only 8 feet of clearance
That and the need to dredge the creek would probably keep it from accommodating commercial boat traffic
on opening the area for smaller boats as well as sightseeing
“The new Dumfries we are building is just the old Dumfries rediscovered,” Wood said
“We were created as this beautiful waterfront community

Inter had been leading with a Marcus Thuram back-heel flick and acrobatic Denzel Dumfries brace
but Barcelona fought back for a 3-3 thriller
so the Champions League semi-final will be decided at San Siro
The Nerazzurri went from potential Treble winners to the real risk of ending the season empty-handed after three consecutive defeats in all competition. Thuram and Dumfries returned to the starting XI
but Benjamin Pavard missed out with a sprained ankle
The Blaugrana were still in the hunt for a hat-trick and beat Real Madrid 3-2 in extra time on Saturday for the Copa del Rey Final
Marc Casadó and Marc Bernal were out of action
Lamine Yamal interrupted the warm-up with a thigh twinge
The second leg will be at San Siro on Tuesday May 6

Jacobs is progressing the detailed design of the £37M Whitesands flood protection scheme in Dumfries
following completion of ground investigations last summer
which will provide flood protection and public realm improvements
Dumfries and Galloway Council confirmed that consultant Jacobs is currently progressing with the detailed design of the scheme, which is informed by ground investigation works carried out in the summer of 2024
The works involved cable percussion and rotary coring techniques
geophysical downhole surveying of boreholes and long-term groundwater monitoring
Trial and observation pits were also excavated to assess existing foundations and utilities
Soil Engineering was the main contractor for the investigations
while European Geophysical Services carried out the downhole geophysics testing
The investigations provided additional data to supplement historical studies and enabled the installation of groundwater monitoring systems along the scheme’s alignment
“We have gathered further information on the stratigraphy and strength of soils and rocks
The geohydraulic properties of superficial and solid deposits and groundwater response to changes to river water levels were investigated through geohydarulic testing and water level monitoring,” the spokesperson said
The geology of the area consists of made ground
alluvium and glacial deposits of Kilblane Sand and Gravel
underlain by Dowel Breccia Formation of conglomerate and sandstone
“The depth to bedrock and thickness of made ground varied,” the spokesperson added
The Whitesands area of Dumfries has experienced more than 200 flooding incidents since records began
with the River Nith frequently overflowing during periods of heavy rain
The most severe flood occurred in December 2022
Plans for a flood defence scheme have been under discussion since 2012
with Dumfries and Galloway Council formally publishing its proposal in 2017
The approved scheme features a raised walkway incorporating walls
glass panels and flood gates to mitigate flood risk
Originally scheduled for delivery in 2020 or 2021
the project was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic
