12 figures he put in his Albany Park mural he says he was trying to represent the neighborhood’s diversity and also positioning the characters “in conversation with one other.” It was the perfect assemblage of individuals for his 2024 mural on a building that houses the North River Commission and Albany Park Chamber of Commerce “We wanted to represent traditional clothing and people who live in the neighborhood I tend to work well with a lot of bold shapes.” Kraft says “I wanted to offer a playful and joyful experience.” “I wanted to offer a playful and joyful experience,” Joe Kraft says of his Albany Park mural The mural portrays Albany Park residents in a variety of traditional Middle Eastern Latin American and African dress among other garb shaking a fan or pouring from a watering can The space around the neighbors is filled with flowers music notes and big bluestem native grasses “Albany Park is a neighborhood that has gone through significant cultural shifts and we really wanted to represent the wide range of people who have called our neighborhood home while also having fun with the design,” says Eve Miller of the North River Commission the mural represents all of the generations and cultures who have spent time in Albany Park and welcomes those who are making their way here.” Kraft, who earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in ceramics from Alfred University in New York, lives in Logan Square and works as a designer The Albany Park mural made such an impression that the organizations’ staffs hope that Kraft will continue it going up the entire wall A mural painted Joe Kraft is on a building at 3403 W Kraft created the mural by priming the wall and painting the base color during the day then projecting his design onto it at night He and a friend then used crayons to trace the image before returning during the day the following week to fill in the shapes with color He used exterior latex paint for the artwork The whole process took about 10 days in July 2024 “You don’t expect how large it’s going to be until you start painting it and seeing the designs come to life at that scale,” Kraft says His favorite character is the bearded gentleman with a Sale popping on one of my comfort shows (more often than not and to put it mildly … her sofa left more to be desired something she’d be the first to tell you herself it was quickly decided that once I fully settled it if you’re looking for a sofa that has it all you’ll also find that many options are machine-washable meaning this sofa is great for those with hectic households the materials used in the construction of this sofa are also a standout this sofa is comfortable and built to last it comes shipped directly to your doorstep and is designed to be put together in minutes let’s talk about my personal customizations I went with the dark teal performance velvet and a right-facing orientation for the chaise The teal velvet instantly adds elegance to our living room and is unlike any other velvet sofa I’ve ever sat on as it doesn’t stick to you but is still sumptiously soft I’ll just say this: I’ve sat on sofas three times the price (I’m talking about you infamous cloud couch) and this sofa blows it out of the water If every sofa on the planet had these cushions They offer the perfect amount of support without being too firm or needing to be “broken in” —  a perfect medium plush These cushions do not slide (chaise included) I’ve also lost count of how many times both my sister and I have fallen asleep on this sofa so when I say it’s comfortable And the most important part — the cleaning While I’ve yet to toss the covers in the wash both my sister and I have spot-cleaned to great success something we were both nervous about because velvet can be notoriously finicky And while our dog’s fur did stick a bit to the velvet (hey you can’t fight the nature of the fabric) we were happily surprised to see with a quick swipe it was gone While Albany Park offers free shipping (pre-arranged so you know when it’s coming) Thankfully the actual setup is a breeze (you simply click the pieces into place) but it can be hard to get the boxes themselves into your space if I’d do it again 100x over — that’s how good this sofa is but I would specifically recommend it if you’re looking for something that: HOW WE SHOP FOR YOUOur writers and editors put hundreds of products to the I decided to scrap the hodgepodge of random furniture I’d collected over the years and find pieces that actually went together I consulted a friend who’s an interior designer and we chose soothing colors for my new space: light gray walls with white molding and furniture and decor in shades of cream and dark brown My biggest dilemma was whether to get a white sofa or something more in the brown family, as white obviously shows stains, dirt, and wear and tear easily I went for white to make the space feel bigger and brighter that sofa held up well for about 10 years — until I noticed a tiny spot on it I tried getting it out with soap and water I then tried multiple solutions to remove the water stain I took the plunge and chose the creamy Sand Performance Basketweave fabric The fact that this sofa is stain-resistant is the big selling point The tight basketweave fabric repels liquids but also resists snags and makes it easy to brush off hair I haven’t needed to wash the cushion covers yet yet it still provides plenty of room for two people to sit comfortably and it was relatively simple to assemble on my own (although some of the pieces are a bit of a heavy lift so having an extra helping hand definitely doesn’t hurt) I slid it into the area where my old white sofa had been The sofa was a little bit wider than my previous couch and took up a bit more space (whoops!) but it was so much more comfortable that it was worth it Sitting on the Lido felt almost like a luxurious experience I smoothed my hands over the light-colored basketweave fabric and I could tell that this thing was built to last and I don’t have to treat it as delicately as I did my old white sofa I used to put a throw blanket down before anyone sat on that couch It literally and figuratively keeps me more relaxed than my previous white sofa did the Lido 75” Sand Basketweave Sofa is perfect for the following: the brand charges 10% of what you paid for the sofa (if original packaging is intact) or 20% without original packaging (the fee is capped at $200) Albany Park will accept the return and issue a refund as long as the sofa is in “like new” condition Read the commentsFiled in:ShoppingSmall Spacessofas The home you love starts here Albany Park is running a Friends & Family sale where if you spend $1,000 Albany Park was kind enough to send me the Kova Sectional to try out for myself I'm writing this article while sitting on it at this very moment My boyfriend and I spend our nights sprawled out on this sectional (because yes there's plenty of room for both of us to completely lie down if we want) — it's perfect for binging hours of a show We can even move the ottoman to the center of the couch if we want more of a bed-style way of relaxing I also appreciate that the cushions are reversible so if I spill something that stains badly (hello PS Photography | Macy Cate WilliamsPet-Friendly FabricChoosing the right fabric is incredibly important to me because I have both a cat and a dog Getting animal hair stuck to furniture is a nightmare I've experienced plenty in the past and I didn't want to make that mistake again the gray fabric my couch is made in is a dream come true PS Photography | Macy Cate WilliamsA Closer Look at the Kova SectionalI wanted to give you a closer look at this sectional so you can get a good idea of the details You'll see that the cushions hold their form quite well for being so fluffy The fabric color is a blend of both light and dark gray which made decorating even easier because I could bring in multiple tones PS Photography | Macy Cate WilliamsIt's Huge Plenty of RoomI can't stress enough how spacious this couch is Four people could comfortably lounge around albanypark.comEasy to AssembleEach module of the sofa comes in its own box, so we built each section at a time. like to upgrade to a storage ottoman Albany Park gives you the option to finance with Affirm if you choose we got an email with an estimated ship date I received a call to schedule my delivery about four days later the freight came by and dropped two wood pallets stacked high with eight sizable boxes right outside of my apartment complex the boxes were quite narrow and doorframe-friendly each box contained a whole section of the couch If you don’t live in an apartment complex you should be able to enlist a partner and tag team them inside Because I live on the third floor of a building without elevators I immediately weakened and hired a couple of movers to rescue me It’s just a matter of lining up the metal tracks on the bottom of the backrests to the ones on the base and sliding them into place open up the vacuum-sealed bags containing the seat and back cushions and toss them on they spring to life the second you pull them out The trickiest part was putting together the corner pieces I struggled while trying to figure out how on earth the second backrest/armrest fits on—the way it’s situated puts the first backrest directly in the way of the second set of tracks I decided to take a peek at the aforementioned assembly videos Albany Park clearly states that the second backrests have to go in at an angle and the piece slid in nicely after making that small (yet critical) adjustment it’s time to attach them to create a nice sturdy sofa since this modular sofa offers nearly endless configuration options Instead of aligning the pieces in the “pit” formation I opted to go for a longer L-shape that best fit my living room Each middle sofa piece has a bracket on both outer edges of the underside except they boast brackets on two adjoining sides while the other is more of a “cradle.” To put the couch together it’s a simple matter of pushing the opposite types of brackets together to lock things into place the process took me about two-ish hours to assemble by myself shooing away curious cats and discarding the mountain of cardboard I acquired in the process I would say that this was actually an easier process than I anticipated—it’s just rather time consuming I’ll say it again: This thing is soft It’s sink-in-and-immediately-fall-asleep soft Some say they’re still there to this day snoozing away like the little couch hogs they are But that leads into my favorite aspect of the Albany Park Kova sectional: The sheer cosmic size of this couch the Albany Park Kova Pit sectional functions as both a bed and a sofa unfurled L-shaped configuration in my living room It’s also totally snooze-worthy (in the best way) I’ve had my Albany Park Kova sectional for circa five months at this point and it’s still as sink-able and doze-deserving as it was the day I put it together I’ve turned several friends onto the couch after they spent the night on this behemoth splendor I myself “accidentally” fall asleep on it almost every evening while my husband plays video games just to get another hour or so of peaceful It’s not enough that I spend most of my work from home day on it; I wish I could spend all of my time on it this sofa takes up an awful lot of the living room The Albany Park Kova Pit sectional comes with an included ottoman featuring optional storage for a slightly higher price (I found it well worth the extra cost The optional addition of the storage ottoman gives me space to keep extra blankets and pillows for sleepover guests it’s incredibly inviting to have an ottoman that bolsters my legs wherever I’m sitting or—let’s be honest—sleeping The couch itself comes in a wide range of stain-resistant fabrics making it a good choice for families with kids or pets The performance fabric in particular is worth considering if you have toddlers It offers a water-resistant coating that helps liquids bead up on the surface rather than sinking in and staining the material While the velvet options aren’t stain-proof I personally haven’t noticed any issues with spills sinking into the fabric which gives it a bit of a water-resistant finish I was even able to clean up cat vomit that sat overnight with nary a speck remaining One aspect I don’t love is that the velvet material is something of a fur and dust magnet My cats delight in spreading their multicolored fur all over this couch giving it a good once-over with a handheld vacuum eliminates the fluff without too much effort I aim to perform routine maintenance—fluff the cushions that’s well worth the benefits of lounging on a literal cloud I’ve had my Albany Park Pit sectional for over a year It not only survived a move across the city but its modular construction worked in my favor It was easy to take apart and stash in the moving truck and just as struggle-free to put back together again My new home has a much different living room configuration but this modular sofa’s endless possibilities assisted me in arranging it for the perfect fit in the new abode it looks just like new—so much so that my household still refers to it as the “new couch.” I haven’t tried tossing the cushion covers into the wash but removing them for cleaning is easy—just unzip the covers and pull ’em off Some folks claim they’ve washed their covers in the washing machine and air dried without experiencing shrinking or misshapen results Albany Park doesn’t include that in their care instructions so keep in mind that your mileage may vary I’m not the only one obsessed with my Kova Pit Over a thousand customers gave it five stars on the Albany Park website alone and love it.” She goes on to say that as a pet owner “it’s easy to get the hair off the couch and to remove the pillow covers and throw in the washer.” “I have a big family that sometimes comes to visit and it’s perfect to turn into a bed that three to six can sleep on The seats are so deep it’s easy to sit crisscross or to even cuddle next to someone comfortably on the same cushion We’ve taken a lot of naps and even fall asleep for the night on the couch it’s so comfy This was a worthwhile investment that I see myself loving for years found that it works a treat for movie nights “I have been watching this couch online for several months and when they had a big sale “I was nervous that I had to put it together myself The only problem we had was getting the corner back pieces to fit properly I got it in the rust velvet and it is absolutely gorgeous Another cloud couch that’s similar to the Albany Park Kova Pit sectional is the 7th Avenue sectional waterproof fabrics and high quality materials One place where the 7th Avenue couch shines is maintenance—7th Avenue will send complimentary fill packets to adjust the firmness of the couch it’s also nearly double the price of the Albany Park Kova sectional If you like spending most of your free time lounging with a good book flick or gathering the extended fam for a board game night you really can’t go wrong with this fluffy though: This eighth wonder of the world might just become your new snoozing spot The Albany Park sectional is available on the Albany Park website There are also frequent sales But not because there’s nowhere to eat. In fact, this diverse neighborhood is overflowing with restaurants—taquerias on nearly every block, decades-old Korean institutions, and plenty of kabob places vying for grilled meat supremacy. And there lies the dilemma—where to begin? To help you avoid decision paralysis, we’ve narrowed it down to 23 spots. W Lawrence Ave Chicago Ssyal is an Albany Park institution that's been around since 1988 And that fame is justified: the whole cornish hen stuffed with rice and sweet jujubes While the rejuvenating soup is a must-order Ssyal has other tasty dishes on their menu a sinus-clearing spicy chicken stew with potatoes and carrots often filled with people quietly eating to a soft instrumental soundtrack Thai Irving Park This special occasion Thai restaurant opened in 1987 and is unapologetically formal—servers wear jackets and every table is draped in a crisply ironed tablecloth Arun’s serves a nine-course tasting menu for $100 and it’s a back-to-back parade of beautifully plated dishes like khanom chine And if the tasting menu feels like too much of a commitment with dishes like pad see ew and duck curry You’ll still get the same excellent service and cocktails if you go a la carte but you can also worry less about having an “extend parking” reminder interrupting your meal 8.0Kabobi - Persian and Mediterranean GrillPersian Albany Park But the business is warranted: the Persian food at this casual spot is delicious And group dining is the best plan of attack Share a massive kabob platter (the juicy lamb and filet mignon are particularly tasty) and make sure to upgrade to herbaceous dill rice or the sweeter cranberry polo rice Since this place has no less than three birthdays and at least one family reunion happening at the same time 8.0Chicago Kalbi Korean BBQJapanese Korean and Japanese BBQ come together in a cozy space that feels like the Japanese baseball hall of fame A display of signed baseballs grace the front bar and autographed photos of Japanese home run stars line the walls (but they need Shohei’s to complete the collection) Other than coming to admire the memorabilia the main reason to visit is for their great yakiniku They have a variety of delicious meats like spicy marinated pork belly and Japanese wagyu—which you get to cook yourself on their charcoal grills Each meal comes with some plates of banchan but be sure to also order a few appetizers like seafood pajun or crispy kara-age 8.0Ruby’s Fast FoodFilipino Ruby’s Fast Food has been serving Filipino food in the neighborhood since the 90s Originally a “turo-turo” or “point-point” restaurant where you point at pre-cooked dishes in steam trays to order Some of their standout dishes are the kare kare with oxtail in a creamy peanut butter stew as well as their garlicky and spicy dinuguan But every visit should include an order of the crispy pata The massive fried pork leg is a balanced combination of buttery meat and crackly skin 7.8Raisu Japanese Fine DiningSubo Filipino KitchenNoon O KababMiddle Eastern Noon O Kabab is a Persian restaurant in Albany Park with a really long menu of dishes perfect for group dining And while the adass polo and all of the kebabs are great to share in the casual dining area more upscale space (there are drinks here too) flowy curtains draped across the domed ceiling and painted tiles hanging on the walls that’s perfect for a birthday or a date night 7.8Peking Mandarin3459 W Lawrence Ave Chicago Chinese Most of Peking Mandarin’s menu is full of Chinese dishes like kung pao chicken or Mongolian beef but it’s the Korean-Chinese staples that should be prioritized Their sweet and sour pork has an impressively crispy batter that doesn’t seem to get soggy in the tangy sauce and their cha chiang mein is full of umami but their dining room has lots of tables for a family-style dinner along with old school Chinese zodiac placemats to check if you should actually be friends with the Dragon sitting across from you Just a heads up: they only take cash or Zelle 7.7Taco Max Mexican GrillMexican A neon “Love At First Bite” sign hangs above some tables at this casual spot But unlike other restaurants that seem designed for photo ops you might actually fall in love with the Mexican dishes at Taco Max Their well-seasoned and nicely charred meats like al pastor and arrachera taste great whether loaded into tacos or chunky burritos And their breakfast torta—with scrambled eggs and bean spread sandwiched between pillowy telera bread—is something we’d like to wake up next to every morning 7.8Arzan Cafe4702 N Kimball Ave Chicago Central Asian Arzan Cafe is just steps away from the Kimball Brown Line which makes it an extremely convenient place for commuters to grab a meal their tasty Central Asian food is worth checking out The long menu has plenty of great starters like manty filled with pumpkin or tandoor samsa filled with savory beef and onions and their boso lagman has plenty of slurpable 7.8Torteria San LenchitoAntepli Turkish GourmetTurkish and plant walls decorated with neon cursive—it feels very “River North bottomless brunch.” But there won’t be any mimosa-fueled shout-talking happening at this Turkish restaurant Anything involving their freshly baked bread is a must from cheesy pide with eggplant to crispy lahmacun stuffed with minced meat the must-order is their iskender—slivers of lamb and bread pieces with yogurt and a zesty tomato sauce there will be a few customers stopping by to pick up some baklava to go—and you should follow suit because Antepli makes some of the city’s best 7.7Great Sea Chinese Restaurantbest wings guide) Each order comes with around 12-15 pieces of chicken that defy physics staying crispy regardless of how long they hang out in the sweet and spicy sauce 7.8Birrieria El TexcalMachetes Big QuesadillasLawrence Fish MarketSeafood When it comes to affordable sushi there’s no better spot than Lawrence Fish Market and has an incredibly long menu full of delicious (and reasonably priced) nigiri Many pieces are less than $2 and most rolls are $3-$7—an absolute steal So make sure you stop by an ATM first and already have a destination in mind for where you want to feast on 50 pieces of seafood (no shame in taking care of business in the car) 7.6El Fogon De Elena3149 W Lawrence Ave Chicago Colombian it shouldn’t be overlooked—their Colombian food is delicious The tiny crispy empanadas are great starters filled with things like shredded chicken or cheese and potatoes and share one of their larger tasty seafood platters with a round of Cola and Pola slightly alcoholic Colombian soda that has a 1.5% abv wooden interior has a homey atmosphere filled with decorations that look plucked straight out of a World Market catalog It can get busy pretty quickly during lunch and dinner and there’s always lively energy from the chatter and upbeat Latin playlist 7.5Primetime Bar & Grill3057 W Lawrence Ave Chicago American Even if you could care less about what game is on the smashburger creations at this sports bar are worth checking out The charred patties play a large part in their short menu equally satisfying in standard cheeseburgers or a crispy quesadilla with sweet and spicy Maggi ketchup (ask for extra) which are loaded with two chopped-up patties Primetime can be pretty chill when Chicago teams take the day off but expect a livelier space filled with locals most nights 7.6Pupuseria and Restaurant "El Cuscatleco"3125 W Lawrence Ave Chicago Salvadoran The pupusa might be the official dish of El Salvador but El Cuscatleco makes the argument that it should be the official dish of everyone’s life with plenty of cheese and tasty fillings stuffed inside the warm The mixta with beans and chicharron is our favorite while the pupusas filled with squash or oroco (an edible flower common in El Salvador that tastes similar to asparagus mixed with broccoli) are great as lighter options Their small dining room is ideal for a quick snack but they also have heartier Latin American dishes like a Guatemalan longaniza platter 7.5Kim’s Home CookingKorean Kim’s Home Cooking is a small casual Korean restaurant inside of the same strip mall as Antepli And though there’s not much going on in terms of decor there’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to the food The menu is full of Korean staples like sweet and savory kalbi and some fantastic crispy chicken wings with a sweet and sticky glaze that’ll warrant extra napkins It doesn’t get too busy since many people are often just stopping by for takeout 7.5LD PhoVietnamese The dining room at LD Pho is simple: framed photos of city scenes and landscapes this quiet Vietnamese restaurant is ideal for a relaxed bowl of pho Their fragrant beef broth is nicely balanced—not too salty or sweet New Dokil Bakery3844 W Lawrence Ave Chicago Bakery/Cafe Our guide to the I knew the replacement chair had to be up to a few challenges: my ever-expanding pregnant body a 4-year-old daughter who likes to do somersaults in the living room and the threat of a spaghetti sauce stain that could happen at any given moment Because of this, a beautiful white bouclé fabric was completely out of the question (maybe once my children have graduated from high school) I also needed a deeper armchair that could accommodate a growing belly and a child who emphatically loves to snuggle and watch cartoons including a gorgeous alabaster bouclé for those of you who don’t have children or hairy pets The vegan leather fabric that I chose is a pretty camel shade that’s neutral enough to go with any color scheme which come in four different options ranging from brass to different shades of woods are sturdy and have a little curve to them giving you stability and mid-century modern style I’m currently about eight months pregnant and uncomfortable in nearly every chair or surface I sit on but this chair has the right combination of depth and support to make me feel like I can sit and watch a movie without having to continually roll over like a rotisserie chicken you could argue that any leather or faux leather chair is going to be easy to wipe up but I’m truly amazed at how brand-new the chair continues to look — even after a run-in with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a couple of coffee drips on groggy mornings Although I chose the vegan leather specifically so I could ward off stains from a messy family the seat and the cushions on the Lido chair are removable for easy cleaning and stain resistant so that it can be the kind of chair you don’t have to hover over when guests are drinking something in the living room (or is that just me?) My only critique is that because of the vegan leather’s slip the seat cushion tends to slide forward a bit particularly when a little one is sitting on it but this can be easily fixed with some well-placed Velcro strips (which I fully intend on investing in soon) and we were able to assemble it in a little less than 30 minutes and the most time-consuming part was just making sure the legs were facing the right direction Even if you’re new to assembling furniture (or I’d say this is a pretty easy piece of furniture to put together in a short amount of time The Lido armchair starts at $1,233 when it’s at full price New customers can also sign up for emails and get $150 off their first order Each Albany Park Lido armchair is custom made to order but the chairs are ready to be shipped in about a week after you order Read the commentsFiled in:FurnitureLiving RoomShopping The home you love starts here 2024ShareThis Albany Park Sofa Stood Up to My 2 Kids and Husband (and Still Looks Great)Read how the Albany Park sofa help up against one editor's energetic family Learn about its durability and style in this honest review Making a purchase through our links may earn Well+Good a commission Albany Park Barton Sofa — $1,394.00Dimensions: 101″W x 30.5″H x 40″D (best for medium to large spaces) Albany Park offered me the choice between its Barton, Kova, and Lido styles. My attention was immediately drawn to the Barton sofa (from $1394) sleek look—the opposite of the frumpy couches I’ve picked out in the past a deep navy blue that gives off sophisticated vibes while being stain-resistant at the same time I paired it with the Walnut legs and hit “add to cart.” Once my order was complete I received a confirmation email noting an estimated five to seven-day delivery window I got a call from the delivery company confirming that delivery would take place the next day—easy peasy!  Something you should know about me is that I absolutely refuse to buy furniture I have to assemble myself because I don’t have the time two delivery men placed three gigantic boxes in my foyer How was this couch going to get put together How was I supposed to take enormous couch parts out of these cardboard boxes I was frustrated at the monumental job that lay before me but was pleasantly surprised at how fast assembly took (much easier than the Ikea bookshelf I tried to put together during my senior year of college).  There is no doubt about it: assembling the couch is a two-person job I had my husband to help and take on the grunt work aligning them inside metal brackets on the inside of the couch we screwed on the legs and placed the cushions The entire process—from unboxing to complete setup—took about an hour We did have to make special arrangements with our recycling company to haul away all of the cardboard so that is something to keep in mind.  Photo: AuthorAlbany Park Barton Sofa: Final verdictI was afraid that the Barton sofa would be too nice for our family room. But I’m happy to report that, yes, you can have a stylish couch that is both comfortable, durable, and won’t cost you and arm and a leg. If you have children and pets, it doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style for function. To be fair, assembling the couch wasn’t my favorite part, but it was well worth it.
