After years of operating as a popup around Dallas, Burger Schmurger will open this week in the former BarNone space
Owned and operated by Lake Highlands neighbor Dave Culwell, the concept has operated as a widely-acclaimed pop-up with a permanent kitchen at High Fives on Henderson for the last few years
Culwell will finally open Burger Schmurger’s first brick-and-mortar location on April 30 on Buckner Boulevard
Culwell signed the lease for the space in November and has spent the last few months reimagining the space with a throwback
1960s-esque diner feel complete with neon accents
Burger Schmurger has announced its presence in the neighborhood with a large LED sign featuring its newly born mascot (which appears to be a rather scientifically confusing hybrid of Culwell and his famed burger)
It’s a long way from his backyard, where Burger Schmurger was born in 2020 as “a way to keep our village together.” Eventually, and with some encouragement from his daughter, Culwell began popping up with his “Schmurgers” at Oak Highlands Brewery
SMU Football games and neighborhood events
The concept has operated out of High Five’s kitchen on Henderson since 2023 and will continue to do so going forward despite the new home on Buckner Boulevard
For the new venture, Culwell has partnered with Brandon Hays and Phil Schanbaum, the owner-operators of High Fives, and Jeremy Koeninger, an industry veteran who has worked with the This and That hospitality team in the past
The brick-and-mortar location’s new menu is a dream come true for longtime Burger Schmurger fans
with past specials and “Schwings” (previously reserved for Sidechick Sundays) making a full-time debut
the original that fueled Burger Schmurger’s rise comes in at the top of the list
American and provolone cheese on an inverted bun
past specials have come back in a big way to become full-time menu features
Irish stout beer cheese and American cheese
Past burgers, the Side Chick ($11), an ode to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in Culwell’s native L.A.
gives customers a chance to get their chicken sandwich fix with a combination of fried chicken
There’s also a loaded grilled cheese complete with onions
and a loaded hotdog served Schmurger-style with jalapeños (both $9)
the restaurant will serve Schwings (buffalo or BBQ
fried house dills ($9) and pretzel bites ($9)
which come with spicy brown mustard and beer cheese
Pretzel bits served with spicy brown mustard and beer cheese
extra sauce ($2) and onion strings can be added on to any order
Behind the bar, Culwell’s establishment boasts 10 beers on draft, representing a mix of local, domestic and imported beers. Vector Brewing’s Bullpen Lager and Oak Highlands Brewery’s Lake Highlands Light are both available in large
there’s definitely a demand for frozen beverages in Texas
Burger Schmurger has two frozen cocktails available: a 16-ounce frozen Paloma and a 16-ounce frozen margarita (both $12)
comes with vodka on top of sweet tea and lemonade to create “Not your Mama’s Arnold Palmer
Other house cocktails include the Painted Pony ($10)
which comes with serrano pepper-infused tequila
Culwell told the Advocate in November that he wants the spot to be a family-friendly neighborhood spot
He also said that he wants parents to feel comfortable coming in for a beer or cocktail after hours
“We want it to be kind of a neighborhood watering hole as well as at the same time one that offers the best burger in Dallas,” Culwell said in November

Port Arthur — Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso tells KFDM/Fox 4 News a suspect has surrendered on a murder charge in the January death of Donesha Buckner
The Criminal Investigations Division of the Port Arthur Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Nerbert Frelow Jr.
in connection with the January 18 murder of Buckner
Frelow surrendered at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on the evening of March 19
Magistrate Marc DeRouen arraigned Frelow and set bond at $1 million
in coordination with law enforcement partners
has been actively investigating the case and appreciates the community’s cooperation during the process," says Chief Duriso
and PAPD's determination to solve the case and bring justice to the victim
Police say Buckner was shot at Normandy Apartments
She died at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas
According to a probable cause affidavit for Frelow's arrest
obtained by KFDM/Fox 4 News from Magistrate DeRouen
the investigation began January 18 when Port Arthur police responded to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas following a call reporting a shooting victim
Medical staff observed a bullet hole in Buckner's lower left abdomen
Investigators went to the apartment complex and viewed surveillance footage
The surveillance footage showed Buckner getting into an altercation with someone in a red Chevrolet HHR
where Buckner was seen stumbling away from the vehicle
investigators were able to obtain a license plate
They were able to trace the plate back to Nerbert Frelow
Investigators located the vehicle and Frelow on January 21
Officers say he voluntarily came in to the police station for questioning and provided a statement
He admitted he was the person driving the HRR
Police seized the HHR and carried out a search warrant
ID technicians located an empty pistol holder inside the vehicle and collected gunshot residue swabs from the interior
An additional search warrant was completed for Frelow's cell phone location data
The data showed Frelow was with Buckner for several hours before dropping her off at the Normandy Apartments just before she collapsed
The gunshot swabs were sent to a private laboratory
The laboratory advised gunshot residue was located inside the Chevy HHR that was seen on the surveillance cameras and in the possession of Nerbert Frelow
it was determined that Nerbert Frelow was with Buckner for several hours before her death
and on video having an altercation with Buckner where she could be seen stumbling away just before collapsing from the gunshot wound
With gunshot residue located inside Nerbert Frelow's vehicle
investigators said they had probable cause to believe Frelow shot Donesha Buckner with a firearm and caused her death
Police obtained a murder warrant for his arrest

Janet Buckner in the Senate chamber March 24
Janet Buckner of Aurora is resigning from the Colorado Senate
after winning reelection to a second and final four-year term in that chamber.
She’s the second state Senator to resign since the November election
who represents a heavily Democratic district in southern Aurora
I didn't take this decision lightly,” she said.
She told CPR News she made the decision after the election
to prioritize herself and mentor the next generation
She said President-elect Donald Trump’s victory also played a factor in her decision.
“As a woman of color I have crossed so many barriers
so the presidential election did make me think deeply about what I’m going to do with the rest of my life,” she said.
Buckner said she’s hoping to lift up those who want to go into public office and spend time with her three children and three granddaughters
"Being a state legislator is a lot of work and it does consume so much of your time and energy."
where she was first appointed to fill out the remainder of her husband’s term
Buckner’s resignation will take effect on Jan
the day after the legislature convenes for its new session
Her Senate seat will be filled by a Democratic vacancy committee.
Buckner currently chairs the Senate Education Committee and sits on the Finance Committee
Governor Jared Polis referred to her as a friend and a champion who has focused on issues that put the people of Colorado first
from free preschool to education to “saving people money on health care and so much more.”
Incoming Senate President James Coleman has known Buckner since he was in high school; her late husband was his school principal
He said she’s taught him how to be a good human being and a good legislator
by "being professional and respecting all people's values and lived experiences
He said she’s the type of person everyone goes to for advice
'let me think about it and I'll come back to you.' And you knew she cared about the response that she was going to give you.”
Buckner, who co-sponsored the Racial Justice Equity Act to look at the long-term impacts of systemic harm to Black residents in Colorado
is one the legislature's few members of color who lived through the civil rights era
In a poignant moment on the House floor six years ago she described how she never had a chance to learn to swim as a child
“She's somebody for me who really grounds me and roots me in my cultural identity
and that I can be unapologetic about who I am as a Black man at the Capitol
She makes me feel confident,” said Coleman.
Leslie Herod of Denver said it was an honor to work with Buckner over the years
The two served together in the Democratic Black Legislative Caucus
“Janet brings a rare level of empathy to her leadership that will be missed
Senator Buckner AKA Momma Buckner has left her mark on the Capitol and the state of Colorado,’ said Herod in a text message to CPR
The departure of Buckner and Sen. Chris Hansen just after each won reelection means Democratic vacancy committees in their respective districts will select replacements to serve for two years until the next general election in 2026.
the Colorado Democratic Party is now calling for reforms in the process for filling vacancies
Party Chair Shad Murib said that while special elections can be slow and cost-prohibitive
it's time for the state to find ways to make the process more transparent and open to the public
“Vacancy committees are small and don’t provide for the same type of public input and scrutiny as a traditional election,” said Murib in a statement.
He noted that a vacancy appointment gives someone the advantage of incumbency going into what might otherwise be vigorous primary elections
and cited worries that the system can be manipulated
“Speculation that lawmakers strategize their resignations to hand-pick their replacements
is also a growing sentiment among the public,” he said.
Buckner said she did not have someone in mind for her replacement
has endorsed Rep.-elect Sean Camacho to take his seat
and has also said he’d like to see Democrat Katie March backfill Camacho’s position

(KCTV) - The popular Buckner Italian restaurant Tuscono’s announced it will close its doors permanently on Jan
The restaurant made a post on Facebook on Dec
The post said that while Tuscono’s has enjoyed serving the community for over nine years
the rising costs of labor and food have greatly impacted operations
The recent passage of Proposition A in Missouri
which requires increased minimum wage and employers must provide paid sick leave
It continued to say that the decision was not made lightly and
the financial realities make it challenging for the restaurant to provide the mandates from Proposition A without drastically increasing menu prices for customers
Those with gift cards are encouraged to visit the restaurant before the closure

(Editor’s note: James McClure served as reporter
editor and publisher in Phil Buckner’s newspaper group
His masters work in American studies at Penn State Harrisburg focused on York County journalism history)
When Phil Buckner acquired the York Daily Record in 1978
his immediate task was to right an upside-down business
He inherited a $6 million pension liability from previous owners
meaning that the funds to pay future pension benefits to employees and retirees was short by that amount
$1 million for the struggling six-day newspaper in a small
Their priority — this would be the goal in Buckner’s 26-year run as YDR owner — was to invest in the local report
and the York County community soon received a dividend
the YDR newsroom produced a series of stories that portended an accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant
Those stories brought sizzling pressure from local business officials and the national nuclear industry
that criticism fizzled when screaming sirens signaled the subsequent partial meltdown of one of TMI’s nuclear reactors
Seeing this growing grit and fresh force in news coverage
Buckner chooses journalismPhil Buckner died recently at age 94
a moment that brought memories of accomplishment from family
His life and work is worthy of reflection here because he
led the transformation from a brand of 19th-century journalism in York County to thoughtful and principled journalistic storytelling in place today
Buckner chose newspapering over his family’s business
starting as a reporter for the Lowell Sun in Massachusetts
He went to work for a small newspaper group
acquired a newspaper of his own in Carlsbad
gained ownership of what would eventually total seven daily newspapers
he was acquiring a newspaper that can be dated to a German-language publication that started in 1796
who had earned a master’s degree in history from Columbia
the newspaper aligned with the Democratic Party
served as the Democratic chief burgess of York in the Civil War era
owner from 1915 to 1970 was a Democrat who would be viewed to the left of Bernie Sanders today
serving as state campaign chairman for Progressive Party candidate Henry Wallace
Gitt’s newspaper was the only American daily to endorse Wallace in that election
Scholars assessing Gitt’s brand of newspapering assess him as a personal journalist
meaning the newspaper unabashedly reflected his political views
similar to the news philosophy of Fox News and CNN today
Struggling with that unfunded pension liability
Gitt shut down his Gazette and Daily in 1970
retired its name and sold its assets to a group of attorneys headed by Democratic York County District Attorney Harold N
from the attorneys and updated the newspaper’s infrastructure
He moved news operations from its aging East King Street building to Springettsbury Township
installed a printing press with color capability and updated the look of the newspaper
With those significant investments in place
Buckner could focus on other crucial pieces that would give the York Daily Record and its later expansive digital product lineup a future
he would not get involved in news and opinion decision-making
his editor in chief and opinion page editor would decide what U.S
presidential candidates to endorse on its opinion page
the YDR endorsed both Democratic and Republican candidates
the YDR editorial endorsing Ronald Reagan signaled the end of a 188-year era of Democratic support
giving it access to Sunday advertising to go with its desirable morning publication schedule
had no Sunday edition and was distributed in the evening
That bold move catalyzed a series of countermoves by the rapidly modernizing York Dispatch
ending in a government-sanctioned arrangement
a joint operating agreement or partial merger
The two newsrooms continued to operate separately
ever ahead of the curve in deploying new technology
fostered a newsroom environment of innovation
The YDR had a York Digital Record prototype ready for a later launch but went live when the Blizzard of 1996 prohibited newspaper delivery
the digital audience leader among media companies based in the county
has a future stemming from that early entrance in news and advertising on digital platforms
journalism peers recognized this focus on the local news report
making the YDR the most awarded medium-sized news organization in Pennsylvania in the past 45 years
coverage of how DNA led to an unjust murder conviction of York County’s Ray Krone in Arizona and coverage of long-overdue trials of 1969 race riot assailants drew national journalism honors as well
In the inaugural class of 100 in the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Hall of Fame in 2024
People skills a priorityWhat were the keys to Phil Buckner’s success in the news business
had the gift of discovering talented people with drive and a moral compass
They were relentless in handpicking skilled people and then letting them do their job
The quest was to identify and hire employees in all departments with “people skills,” as the Buckner culture called this attribute
Buckner’s interest in people across the YDR organization might not have been immediately evident
one might think they were dealing with a very nice and reserved college professor
in hiring staff with people skills and giving them resources to grow could be derided by others in the rough-and-tumble news industry
But everyone who knew Buckner understood his inner toughness
and those were the type of people who would fill his organization: kind people with inner strength
Those attributes were necessary to do the right thing amid constant change
That would explain why Buckner people would go on to leadership positions as ownership moved to other groups after Buckner sold the YDR in 2004
Here’s one example of how Buckner’s people-oriented culture would extend through his former staff members working under successive YDR owners: About the time that the YDR sent large teams of journalists north with the wrenching assignment of covering the mass slaying of kindergartners in Newtown
the YDR became involved in the journalism trauma movement
Journalism trauma training offered self-care and other strategies to help YDR journalists offset the wear and tear of their stressful and demanding calling
I was present to hear another newspaper owner deride the absent Buckner
who was then selling his small group of newspapers
about how little return he had gained financially from the sale of his news properties
Then he started doing the math — you could ballpark the value of a newspaper by known multiples of
he reluctantly admitted that Buckner’s newspaper properties showed exponential growth on his investments
And let’s just say that the number he came up with was more than the $1 million Buckner had paid for the YDR in 1978
His emphasis on the local news report had paid off financially
Buckner sold the YDR to MediaNews Group in 2004 as part of a complex ownership change
and he and Martens started operating The York Dispatch
Martens’ role in the Dispatch operations grew
Buckner climbed mountains and completed five marathons
It’s not a coincidence that for years the York Daily Record
has blended York County history as context into its local report
When Martens posted on Facebook about Buckner’s death
Buckner’s friends and former employees responded
Paul Kuehnel came aboard the YDR in those early Buckner years
“It was an honor to start work for him at a time when local journalism under BNA (Buckner News Alliance) was expanding and seemed to have no limits,” Kuehnel
“I think I remember him coming in once early on and asking us ‘what do we need to buy to do great journalism’."
Dennis Hetzel served as YDR editor and publisher under Buckner for about 15 years
I doubt he will get the recognition he deserves,” he wrote
“but those of us who were around him know.”
And now the people of York County know about this news industry innovator and influencer who
served as a prime force in modernizing journalism in York County

the Colts played the Cincinnati Bengals in their final preseason game before the beginning of the 2024 NFL season
Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo stood on one sideline
while a blue-and-white-clad Shane Steichen stood across the field
It wasn't the first time two had faced off; they met multiple times before
when Steichen was offensive coordinator for both the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles as well as Steichen's first year as head coach for the Colts in 2023
the two coaches will be standing on the same sideline – and Anarumo's prior knowledge of Steichen and the Colts
was a large factor in his decision to join the Colts as their new defensive coordinator
"Great organization from top down," Anarumo said in his introductory press conference on Thursday
how they've – I've looked from afar and always appreciated what this place stands for."
whether it was Miami or Cincinnati playing the Chargers or the Eagles
with 36 years of coaching experience under his belt
also enters his new job at Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center with some prior knowledge about the players he'll be working with
including defensive tackle DeForest Buckner
his length – just a simple thing of just batting balls down at the line of scrimmage
that's something that we really stress because that's one more down that the ball's not going down the field," Anarumo said
he plays the run as well as he plays the pass
Buckner recorded seven passes defensed and eight sacks en route to his third Pro Bowl selection
Despite being on injured reserve for five games and battling through injuries for the majority of the 2024 season
Buckner finished the season with a Pro Football Focus overall grade of 81.9 as well as a 16 percent pass rush win rate
good for second among all qualified defensive tackles
Buckner was also named an alternate for the 2024 Pro Bowl
at some point in their careers," Anarumo said
Those guys can affect the game more than anybody
And as you go through the linebacking core and then the DBs
there's certainly guys that can affect the game as well."
Anarumo mentioned rookie defensive end Laiatu Latu by name as he talked about the defensive line
saying he liked the UCLA product in last year's NFL Draft
recently named to the PWFA 2024 All-Rookie Team
finished the season with a pass rush win rate of 14 percent for third-best among regular rookie pass-rushers
three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 17 games played
Having a strong defensive line isn't Anarumo's only focus
though; he's also a coach who isn't afraid to bring a blitz when he has the right personnel – and he has that in slot cornerback Kenny Moore II
just like he did with Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton
When Hilton and Anarumo were together from 2021-24
Hilton led NFL cornerbacks with 178 blitzes; the Chiefs' and Titans' L'Jarius Sneed was second with 124
Moore made his excitement clear on X when the news of Anarumo's hiring broke
whether that's been meeting Anarumo in person – like Buckner – or talking to him over the phone
and them to come to talk to me," Anarumo said of his first impressions of his new players

Head coach Shane Steichen meets with the media for his mid-week update as the Colts prepare to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 3
The last time DeForest Buckner missed a game due to an injury was the fifth game of his rookie year
The Colts on Tuesday placed Buckner on injured reserve following a sprained ankle sustained last weekend against the Green Bay Packers
meaning the three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle will be sidelined for at least the next four games
"Obviously a huge blow," head coach Shane Steichen said
The earliest Buckner could return is the Colts' Week 7 home game against the Miami Dolphins
but Steichen wouldn't put a timetable on his return
"That guy is so freaking tough," Steichen said
"but I know he'll attack his rehab and be ready to roll when he comes back."
That Buckner even was able to play in Week 2 was an achievement in its own right – one that points to not only how tough Buckner is
but how intentional the 30-year-old is with preparing himself to play under even the most challenging circumstances
Buckner sustained a back injury toward the end of the Colts' Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans and did not participate in practice leading up to Sunday's game against the Packers
"From where Buck was on Sunday night after Houston to where he was on Monday
to the fact that he was even able to dress and play on Sunday at Lambeau is a testament to his dog mentality and how committed he is not only to this team
but to his standard — his own personal standard," linebacker Zaire Franklin said
how much it means to be out there every single play
I told him it broke my heart when the IR came off across social media last night
I didn't even text him because I just knew what he was going through
but I told him I got his back and I'm gonna hold it down until he gets back."
has fought through injuries to still make it on the field on Sundays
He played the majority of the 2022 season with a significant elbow injury
never missing a game – even as the Colts sunk to a 4-12-1 record – while totaling eight sacks and 22 quarterback hits
The only game he hasn't played in since joining the Colts came in 2020 due to the league's COVID protocols
"You don't play this long without going through a lot of injuries and adversity and pushing through them," center Ryan Kelly said
"One of the biggest things you can be in the NFL is available and consistent and he's done that his whole career
"But I know what a great leader and great man he is
I think that's certainly why he's been as consistent as he's been here for so long."
Buckner's interior defensive line partner for the last five seasons
succinctly summed up his respect for how Buckner has battled through injuries in the past: "That lets you know he's a warrior
the Colts will rely on the next men up in their defense – Adetomiwa Adebawore
Taven Bryan and Raekwon Davis among them – to fill in as best they can
But Buckner will continue to have a presence for the Colts' defense
even as he now has to work his way back from an injury significant enough to land him on injured reserve
he's that type of guy that's going to stick around
make sure that the guys filling in are comfortable and aware of what they got going on," Franklin said
"He'll do his best to help support in any way he can."

DeForest Buckner and Jonathan Taylor speak with the media on Thursday as the Colts prepare to face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 16
It's also the descriptor you're most likely to hear when talking with coaches or teammates about the 30-year-old defensive tackle
has been a model of consistency in everything he does
He doesn't divert from his Monday-through-Saturday routine
which includes early-morning weightlifting sessions
intentional film study and a heavy emphasis on treatment to get his body ready to play Sunday
And when Buckner is on the field on Sundays
that consistent routine produces consistent production on a game-to-game
"He's a very smart player that knows how to break down the film and break down a team," defensive tackle Grover Stewart said
he knows how they shift and all that — he already knows what's about to happen."
But it's sometimes easy to take a player for granted when they're so remarkably consistent for such a long period of time
"I think we all do," defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said
The Colts don't have to do any projecting or wishcasting with the three-time Pro Bowler
only one defensive tackle has more sacks than Buckner (Kansas City's Chris Jones)
who's hurled a quarterback to the ground 39 times in the last five seasons
And his play has not dropped off after turning 30 this summer: Buckner's 6.5 sacks this season are seventh among defensive tackles
and that's with him missing five full games in 2024
Buckner has recorded a sack in three consecutive games
the third time in his career he's had back-to-back-to-back sacks (Weeks 6-8 of 2021
Also: Pro Football Focus tracks a stat called pass rush win rate
which quantifies how frequently a defensive player beats a pass blocker on a snap
And Buckner's 15.9 percent pass rush win rate is the third-highest among defensive tackles this season
"You can see them turn the protection to him at times
But Buckner's impact on the Colts extends beyond his on-field production
and it's another aspect of who he is that is not taken for granted inside the walls of the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center
and imparts on the rest of the Colts' locker room
is invaluable whether his team is winning or losing
"He's the foundation," linebacker Zaire Franklin said
he's a sounding board to help me deal with different things in the locker room
different things just trying to grow as a teammate
I think he's somebody that not only myself
but a lot of guys in this locker room lean on both on the field and off the field."
As the Colts turn their attention to the final three games of 2024
with an unlikely but not impossible path to the playoffs
Buckner's steady presence on and off the field will take on added importance
The Colts need help to make the playoffs – in the form of the Los Angeles Chargers losing two of their final three games – but more critical is this team taking care of its own business
And who better to turn to than a guy who exemplifies consistently taking care of his own business
regardless of the circumstances surrounding him
I'm going to consistently do my part," Buckner said
and I'm going to do everything throughout the week for my body
whatever it is to give myself the edge and to help my team succeed
that's the way I go about it every single week
I would say it's probably one of the ultimate compliments I could get as a player and as a teammate."
