“My big takeaway is that downtown is back,” Edwards said
which means they’re being purchased … which will enable those folks to put more money into the amenities
These buildings will become more attractive.”
The organization said hotel occupancy increased only 3% year over year
Edwards said business travel is still behind pre-pandemic levels and putting a hamper on overall hotel occupancy rates
But with more programming around in 2025 — like the centennial of Route 66
which starts in Chicago — he’s hopeful numbers will be up

Ray Capitanini in the Italian Village wine cellar
Ray Capitanini increased the number of wine offerings at the Italian Village
from about two dozen to nearly 4,000 wines
“He really treated wine like an investment and put us on the map for a different segment of the population who came in from across the country to dine here because of the wine,” his nephew Al Capitanini said
Capitanini died April 10 from respiratory issues after heart surgery
he was part of the second generation of their family to run the restaurant — Chicago’s oldest Italian restaurant — at 71 W
Ray Capitanini with Barbra Streisand when she dined at the Florentine Room early in her career
was the restaurant’s table-hopping maitre d’
He’d mingle with patrons who included many well-known names over the years
“He’d sit with them and chat and share stories,” Al Capitanini said
noting that his uncle always started his night at the restaurant with a negroni before moving on to a couple of glasses of wine and finishing the evening with a glass of Hennessy X.O cognac
Back when Streisand was singing at Chicago nightclubs
“The Italian Village was the first restaurant she ever ate in in Chicago,” according to Pamella Capitanini
who said the singer liked the pasta primavera

He’d be the first on the dance floor at weddings and the last off
occasionally firing off a few sets of pushups in between
“Ray just would have a very good time,” said his niece Lisa Capitanini
Capitanini oversaw the opening of the upscale Florentine Room inside the trilevel building that houses the Italian Village
but the Italian Village remains and also includes two other restaurants and an event space in the same Loop building that are run by fourth-generation members of the family
Chicago Sun-Times restaurant critic Pat Bruno wrote of Vivere
the restaurant that replaced the Florentine Room: “I would be remiss not to mention the outstanding selection and collection of Italian wines that has put Italian Village on the wine map
Its collection of vintage Barolo and Barbaresco and Brunello wines alone is enough to make the fussiest of wine snobs sniffle with pleasure.”
Capitanini lived in Lincoln Park with his wife
His garden was a perennial highlight of the Sheffield Garden Walk
Capitanini loved art and music and was a supporter of the Lyric Opera of Chicago
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Goodman Theatre
A diehard Cubs fan, he cherished attending World Series games in 2016 with his brother, Frank Capitanini, who died in 2018.

“He really was someone you could have a conversation with and really talk about everything,” said his nephew

his collection has grown thanks to the saints and other religious motifs his customers gift him
The menu features something for a wide variety of tastes
but this especially rings true for those with a shrine in their hearts to chilaquiles
the traditional chilaquiles verdes are made with tomatillo sauce
Try the café de olla or sample one of the many coffee drinks or milkshakes
La Catedral has recently expanded with a new, modernized version of its original restaurant in North Lawndale (1407 S. Washtenaw) and a more compact, counter-only service offshoot in Brighton Park inside Clínica La Esperanza (4720 S. California Avenue). Online orders are accepted
With its vibrant papel picado and an altar dedicated to the Santa Muerte, this dimensional door to Mexico is at the very least, visually fascinating. Half-Mexican grocery store and half-taco wonderland

and circular hot surface with a dome in the center called comal con sombrero
much like the ones you will find on the streets of Mexico City
Start modest with a sampling of the more traditional variations (including al pastor and asada)
and sesos (brain) are go-to’s for regulars of this Little Village establishment
The tacos de canasta (basket tacos) are also favorites
which are better when consumed immediately
Beverage options include aguas frescas of tropical fruits like guanabana and exotic ones like alfalfa with pingüica
a small wild berry that looks like an apple and grows in shrubs
and the fermented tepache made with pineapple juice
La Chaparrita was featured among a few others on this list in the latest season of the Netflix series Taco Chronicles

8.4Lilac Tiger1742 W Division St Chicago
Southeast Asian
Wicker Park
This Wicker Park spot is always a good time
dimly lit space or on their sidewalk patio
And though Lilac Tiger has the loud music and lively energy of a dive bar
their drinks and excellent South Asian food are significantly better than your typical neighborhood bastion of Malört
but if you want to kick off date night earlier or swing by for a post-work hang
their $10 happy hour has tasty snacks and drinks like their tiger fries and spicy marg
7.5Volo Restaurant and Wine BarRoscoe Village
This Roscoe Village wine bar has one of the best secret patios in the city
and even has private cabanas where you can enjoy dishes from Volo's loosely French menu like flaky salmon with a cider gastrique for dinner
But we recommend coming a little earlier for their great happy hour deals from 4-6pm nightly
sitting on a cushioned bench in your own cabana feels even better
8.0Dell RoosterLatin
The decision to go to Dell Rooster in West Town is always a good one
This isn’t just because this all-day Latin American restaurant has great food (and it really

the happy hour menu has four different types of sushi

Goose Island
8.3Gilt BarBocaditosWest Loop
Given the proliferation of boozy taco spots a few blocks north on Randolph, it would be easy to write off Bocaditos. This quiet Mexican restaurant in the West Loop does have margaritas and tacos
and you can enjoy catching up with a friend in a place that won’t cause the “Loud Environment” warning on your watch to constantly buzz
some of the chicken in the happy hour tacos may be a little dry
and the carne asada might be a little salty
and there's also a ton of seafood options and entrees like enchiladas and poblano fettuccine if you decide to stick around for dinner
The Press RoomWine Bar
When: Tues-Thurs 4-6pm The Deal: $2 Oysters
$45 Dozen Oysters and Bottle of Sparkling Wine
The West Loop has plenty of loud party bars
sometimes the last thing we want is a busy spot filled with untz-untz music
And we like coming here for happy hour when we want a relaxing drink after impatiently waiting eight hours to set our Slack status to "Away." They only offer happy hour Tuesday through Thursday
but $8 Old Fashioneds and martinis plus $2 oysters are exactly the midweek pick-me-ups we need
8.0AmaruWicker Park with upbeat energy that will keep you awake even though you had to get up at 6am this morning

and also make sure to get a $22 pitcher (or two) of sangria to share
7.5Uvae Kitchen And Wine BarAndersonville
A long wine list and delicious food make Uvae a good spot for a casual dinner—especially if you get there a little earlier for their happy hour

they have $5 glasses of cava to help cleanse your palette

Tanta in River North is an appealing alternative for when you just can’t with your coworker and their "beer and a slider" choice for the fourth happy hour in a row
It’s always a fun spot for dinner (thanks to clubby lighting and a pop playlist)
but Tanta is also great for pisco-based drinks and Peruvian snacks like cebiches and empanadas
you can still enjoy a pisco sour and anticucho even if you got stuck on a 4:30pm call that could have been an email
7.5Chef’s Special Cocktail BarChinese
This Chinese spot from the Giant team is just as much a fun bar as it is a restaurant
Expect it to be crowded and full of loud people who seem like they’ve been at happy hour for days

Residential conversion: It’s the topic on everyone’s lips since the pandemic erupted
office buildings still haven’t bounced back
the Loop closed out Q2 with 25.8% office vacancies — a record high.
The breakdown of office monoculture is starkest on the LaSalle Street Corridor; that sub-area posts the highest office vacancy rates and is the setting for the city’s largest ongoing revitalization effort
will address 1.4 million square feet of office space and
create over 1,000 residential units.
deputy commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development (DPD)
recently discussed the details of LaSalle Reimagined in a commercial forum with the Chicago Association of REALTORS® (CAR)
highlighting the need for additional residences downtown.
Although Chicago’s downtown covers just 3% of city land
Chicago’s downtown population is also growing at the fastest rate in the United States (compared to other large cities)
having gained more than 87,000 residents since 2000.
which aims to address three overall goals:
– Housing conversion with 30% affordability (meaning 30% of units rent for 60% of the area’s median income
– The creation of new and expanded businesses and dining options.
– The creation of an inviting public realm with grand lobby access
(The department is still evaluating two additional projects.) These include the conversions of 79 W
Each of these buildings will become mixed-use and
Based on a recommendation from the Urban Land Institute’s Technical Assistance Panel

R2 Companies is developing the property on Brown Derby’s behalf
it’s set to feature 117 apartments (41 of which will remain “affordable”)
a ground-floor lobby with retail (presently including Walgreens
which will remain) and a rooftop amenity deck
The building will also retain a charter school on floors two through six

The developer has also agreed to protect the building as a designated landmark.
will become The Monroe Residences & Hotel
It’s being developed by Prime/Capri Interests
a joint venture between The Prime Group and Capri Investment Group
The finished product will include a ground-floor lobby with retail

The rest of the building will become a hotel with 226 units
although details of that component are not included in the city’s proposal.
the building was designed by famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and constructed in 1914
LaSalle Reimagined marks yet another conversation in the property’s long history
which will remain in the space while the current offices (floors 13 through 17) become residential
That transformation will include 226 units (68 of which will be “affordable”)
and residents will have access to the hotels’ amenities.

Golub & Company is overseeing the development
which will retain offices on floors 23 through 44
while introducing 349 apartments (105 of which will be “affordable”) as well as lobby and plaza upgrades
Floors two and 11 will feature amenities.
Regarding the second and third goals of LaSalle Reimagined
Roubik outlined the city’s Small Business Improvement Fund
which provides grants for workplace improvements in various TIF districts
which has invested more than $170 million in grants since 1999
expanded to cover the LaSalle/Central TIF last year.
Current LaSalle Street Corridor businesses benefiting include the Board of Trade museum
you’re not just trying to reduce unused office space
you’re bringing people that will be there after hours
on the weekends — people that will support retail
we need to bring more residents downtown to make it more vibrant at more times of the day
That will have an impact on both the perception of the safety issue and the safety issue [itself],” she added
referring to sentiment that downtown is no longer “safe.”
plans to emphasize the area as a “public realm with grand lobby access” are less concrete
DPD is now seeking public input while the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is assessing ways to increase access to downtown

The chef talks about his approach to Roman cuisine at the new restaurant
One of my favorite restaurant genres is the travel-inspired restaurant; a chef goes abroad
and comes back so inspired by the cuisine that they decide to dig deep and learn it
Us mere civilians might buy a cookbook or two after our travels; chef Joe Flamm decided to open an entire restaurant
based on the Roman cuisine that he fell in love with
Flamm worked at several restaurants in Rome
it never quite felt like the right time to open an homage to Italy
he opened the acclaimed Rose Mary and took the reins at BLVD
“It reminded me of places in Rome on the piazzas,” explains Flamm
something I knew I wanted and couldn’t find in the city.”
Flamm’s goal with il Carciofo is to introduce Chicagoans to real Roman flavors
not to create a personal version of the classics
“Americans love riffing things — taking them home and reinventing them,” Flamm laughs
“We want to focus on the products and the techniques and do them in the best way that we can
and try to create something that feels really true to form.” Think of classic Roman pastas like cacio e pepe or aglio e olio without a lot of extra fluff but done just as well as possible
means “the Artichoke,” and is inspired by Flamm’s visits to Roman markets
it was springtime and he went to the famous Campo de’ Fiori and artichokes were everywhere
“It’s a dish that is synonymous with Rome and Roman cuisine,” Flamm explains
and Flamm is importing artichokes straight from Rome
and tossing them with pecorino romano cheese and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice
and Flamm is particularly excited about making pizza al taglio
the Roman-style of rectangular pizza with a light crust
Beverages are under the watchful eye of veteran bar manager Kyle Davidson
who in addition to an all-Italian wine list (with a focus on
has created a cocktail menu designed to take guests through a meal
With an extensive selection of drinks designed as aperitifs and digestifs
you can stick to liquor without burning out your palate
Flamm has watched the West Loop change over the last decade
and his idea of the perfect restaurant for the area has changed with it
“I was part of the opening team at Girl and Goat
and people couldn’t believe we were opening there,” Flamm remembers
the neighborhood has become much more residential
Flamm sees a ton of families dining out every night
“I never in a million years when I was at BellyQ would have thought you’d see that many kids out in the West Loop at 5.” That informs the style of il Carciofo; not that it’s particularly kid-focused
but that it is aiming to be a more casual dining experience
“You can come sit at the bar and have an appetizer and a glass of wine and be out the door
sit at a table and order big Italian wines.”
Reservations for the new restaurant are live now and opening day is December 12
so snag your seats now if you want an early look

The Real ID rush has prompted Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias to launch a new downtown “supercenter” to process thousands of residents seeking the updated identification that will be required for some people to board domestic flights under federal regulations taking effect later this spring
The Real ID Supercenter opened Tuesday morning at 191 N
and will provide walk-in services Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m
in an effort to stem the long lines that have formed outside DMVs across the Chicago area this year
Department of Homeland Security will require Real IDs
to get through airport security and to enter some federal facilities beginning May 7
But unless you’ve got travel plans and you don’t have a U.S. passport or a Global Entry card — which will suffice for federal security — there’s no need to join the waves of people seeking Real IDs
“The demand is unprecedented due largely to people thinking they need a Real ID when they don’t,” Giannoulias said
and if you don’t get it by May 7 it’s not the end of the world.”
Standard state driver’s licenses and ID cards will continue serving as proof of citizenship and valid identification after May 7
The mad dash for DMV appointments has already prompted Giannoulias’ office to boost the number of available slots
which are still being scooped up online within minutes every morning
boxing many people out from basic driver services
Saturday hours have also been extended or introduced at 18 DMVs to help meet demand
with a record-high 10,641 Real ID applications processed March 8
which has previously served as an early voting supercenter for the Chicago Board of Elections
has 30 service counters and will process an estimated 1,500 applications per day
Real IDs will still be issued after May 7 — and officials urge you to wait to apply until well beyond then unless you really need one
Applications must be submitted in person with one of the following: a U.S
permanent resident card or foreign passport with an approved I-94 form
Applicants also need proof of a Social Security number
two residency documents and proof of signature
To determine if you need a Real ID, visit, realid.ilsos.gov.

Once the sad desk lunch of office drones and a last-ditch option for travelers stranded at O’Hare, chicken caesar wraps (henceforth known as CCW) have been co-opted by the masses—part of a balanced meal, including fries and a Diet Coke.
Are these wraps popping up in cafes and restaurants all over the city a response to the work-from-home movement? Are people trying to recreate the corporate experience of eating a one-handed meal while answering emails because they secretly miss the office? Maybe it’s because of America’s obsession with wrapping things. Whatever the case, we’re on board with a portable salad.

CCWs are a great hangover food—especially if they're made with fried chicken
and the crunch factor is high: The croutons and lettuce stay crisp despite being well-dressed
and there’s an extra layer of crunch from the fried chicken
the wrap includes chunks of tomato and comes with so much filling that the extra is served as a side salad
It’s such a great approximation of nutrition you’ll completely forget about those five vodka sodas from last night
Punky's Pizza & PastaItalian

The wraps used for the CCWs at Punky’s in Bridgeport aren’t run-of-the-mill tortillas from Jewel’s refrigerated section
freshly grilled masterpieces are like soft flatbread pizza crusts—doughier
and more flavorful than anything else in this guide
and the little cubes of toasted bread are soaked in garlicky oil so they’re soft
along with juicy grilled chicken and a surprisingly small amount of lettuce
make for a heavy CCW that’s not very crunchy
Nohea CafeBakery/Cafe
The CCW at Nohea in the West Loop will be presented to you in what is essentially a gift bag
It’s super stuffed and looks perfect for the brief moment it stays intact
But since the cold tortilla is not wrapped tightly
it unfurls and you’re left with a better-than-average caesar salad with a side of tortilla
but we’d recommend not eating it one-handed while filming that day’s “spontaneous” TikTok musing
Moonwalker CafeAvondale
A good CCW starts with a good chicken caesar salad. But the wrap is what can make it great. For example, the spinach tortilla used at Moonwalker Cafe in Avondale
earthy flavor that pairs well with the lightly spiced roasted chicken and well-dressed lettuce
because the tortilla is significantly larger than the amount of filling it contains
Be prepared to eat some plain spinach dough
