AUSTIN (KXAN) — Delta Air Lines will launch a new nonstop route between Austin and Palm Springs
Returning flights leave Palm Springs at 12:07 p.m
Rival American Airlines previously flew the AUS-PSP route but canceled it in October 2024 as part of wider cuts at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
“We’re so grateful to our partners at Delta for supporting our community’s air service needs through another new nonstop route,” Ghizlane Badawi
“This new destination expands travel opportunities for both business and leisure travelers and we are excited to offer more convenient options for our passengers.”
Palm Springs is the 11th new route announced by Delta this year
Jacksonville and Memphis will launch this Wednesday
Delta is currently the third-largest airline operating at AUS in terms of passenger traffic
The airline flew more than 3.3 million passengers in and out of Austin in 2024
accounting for about 15.3% of all passengers
especially after American cut more than 30 routes in late 2023 and 2024
Delta is expected to surpass American to become Austin’s second-largest carrier by the summer
Delta will also offer the following nonstop flights from Austin for the 2025 college football season:

the sorority will be able to reapply for housing during the 2025-2026 year for the 2026-2027 year
“Delta Delta Delta is an important part of fraternity and sorority life and Stanford’s residential community,” Santos wrote

adding a slew of new routes from the Big Apple
The airline will add service from its hub at New York's John F

Memphis International Airport (MEM) and St
Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) beginning Sept
The airline will operate all three routes once per day
from its hub at the other airport in Queens — LaGuardia Airport (LGA) — Delta will extend the season on flights to Panama City Beach's Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP)
which is already scheduled on a once-weekly basis during the summer
Delta has one more expansion planned for New York

Paul International Airport (MSP) beginning Sept
Two new services — one from Salt Lake City to Little Rock
The Salt Lake City flights will operate daily beginning Sept
while the new Austin service will operate seasonally in the winter on Saturdays starting Nov
as Delta is cutting seven routes as part of this expansion
as first seen in Cirium timetables and later confirmed by a carrier spokesperson
This isn't the only expansion that Delta recently filed. Over the weekend, the airline added seven new point-to-point routes to Orlando that don't touch any of the carrier's hubs
Delta doesn't usually offer one-off flights from nonhub airports
but demand to Orlando is seemingly strong enough to support some of those one-off flights
Delta can poach some traffic from two wounded competitors — Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines — both of which are undergoing major commercial transformations that are sure to rankle some frequent flyers.)
This latest expansion spree from Delta seems to be aimed at doubling down on its position from key hubs
Delta is already the largest carrier at both JFK and LGA
and this expansion is poised to keep it firmly in first place
As such, the airline is seemingly trying to do as much as it can to woo locals to choose it over the competition. That's great news for flyers, as it will give them more choices — and hopefully lower fares — in many markets. Fingers crossed that Delta SkyMiles redemption rates aren't sky-high, though.

Delta Center receives renovations to accommodate Utah Hockey Club
The NHL will look different in Utah next season.
Smith Entertainment Group announced Wednesday it has begun the first phase of renovations of Delta Center in Salt Lake City, pushing technology further than ever before to turn an arena built for basketball into a dual-sport facility. It is also progressing on the permanent brand identity for the Utah Hockey Club.
When the puck drops for 2025-26, each seat in the lower bowl will have a great view for hockey, and a new logo will be at center ice.
“Just in Year 1, we’re going to see a great improvement in the lower-bowl capacity for hockey,” said Jim Olson, president of the NBA’s Utah Jazz, who is leading facilities projects for SEG.
Delta Center was built in 1991 as the home of the Jazz and underwent a significant renovation in 2017. The NHL established a new franchise in Utah on April 18, 2024. SEG sprinted to ready the arena for hockey for 2024-25, doing what it could in about six months, including adding NHL locker rooms.
But the main problem remained. Only 11,131 seats had a full view of the ice. About 5,000 seats had a view of one goal, most of them in the upper bowl.
“I think it’s the best basketball venue in the NBA,” Olson said. “It was built for basketball with sightlines that created just an incredible fan experience for basketball. And when you come and plop the size of an ice sheet in that venue with those sightlines, the geometry just doesn’t work.”
SEG set out to retain the experience for basketball while creating one for hockey. The renovation work must be done in the offseason for the NHL and NBA. Olson said SEG is hopeful and optimistic the full renovation will be completed over the next three summers.
“We’ve got all the plans and everything ready to go for the work this summer, and we’re still working on the plans, the design and everything, for the next two summers,” Olson said. “If the scope changes, that could change the timeline a little bit. A few other factors could come into play that could change the timeline.”
This offseason, SEG will raise the floor two feet, lengthen the arena bowl by about 12 feet at each end and install a revolutionary retractable seating system that will accommodate a nearly 12-foot variance in elevation between the rink and court endlines. The lower bowl will have 1,000 new seats for hockey, and 400 limited-view seats will become full-view.
“We are replacing the retractable seating in both the end zones and sidelines,” Larry Lippold of SCI Architects said. “We’re really maintaining the basketball sightlines, maintaining the basketball bowl, so you’re really not going to feel a change in the basketball experience. But we will have a premium experience for hockey as well, so [it’s] really packing in the fans close to the action.”
“We are going with a much steeper rake for hockey in the end zones behind the net,” Lippold said. “It’s similar technology that’s been used in other buildings, but what they’re using now is a triple scissor lift, so the change in rake is greater than any other building to switch over between basketball and hockey, so [it’s] using existing technology but really, really pushing it.”
SEG will make other modifications this summer, adding new premium spaces, increasing restroom capacity by 12 percent and installing four new dehumidifiers to maintain optimal ice conditions. It will begin building a 450-stall parking structure that will take two years to finish.
In the future, SEG will remodel the upper bowl, redesign the concourses and the existing plaza, and add a new main entrance and plaza. When completed, SEG expects to have close to 17,000 seats for hockey, all with full views of the ice.
“Our ultimate goal in this transformation is that both sports can have an incredible fan experience, that one or the other is not sacrificed based on the different size of the playing field, meaning the court and the ice sheet,” Olson said. “Both will have incredible viewing experiences and great sightlines.”
What will be at center ice -- Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth or Utah Outlaws?
“Progress continues on exploring all three of the name options that were chosen as finalists by our fans,” SEG executive Mike Maughan said. “We’re fully on track to announce a permanent name and identity ahead of the ’25-26 NHL season and look forward to sharing that with our fans when we do.”
A spokesperson for the Atlanta-based carrier told TPG that the carrier will add service on eight point-to-point routes
The expansion also includes a host of new flights to Orlando International Airport (MCO)
one of the nation's top domestic vacation destinations
You'll find the full list of new routes below. They'll be available to book through all Delta channels (including SkyMiles redemptions) beginning on Saturday:
and will operate seasonally on Saturdays through April 11
The airline will deploy regional jets on all of the new services
but the carrier didn't share which Delta Connection partner or what aircraft type will actually operate each route
Read more: Here's how to plan an epic trip to Universal Orlando Resort this year
Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of these new routes is that none of them touch one of Delta's domestic hubs
Delta usually would prefer to funnel traffic from a city like Nashville to Atlanta
This setup helps airlines get the most usage out of their aircraft
and it allows travelers to book a seemingly endless number of one-stop itineraries to places around the world
But this Delta expansion, which is largely focused on Orlando, takes out all the stops and will bring travelers closer to the theme parks
Saturday-only service is typically harder for an airline to market and fill seats
especially since it means that travelers booking with Delta will need to spend a week in Orlando
fly home with a connection or fly home on a different carrier entirely
It'll be interesting to see how these new flights perform and whether they might return for another season
Of the new routes, just one is from a focus city: Austin (to Palm Springs)
Cirium schedules show that Delta will be the only airline operating this route after American pulled out of the market in May 2024
The seven new Orlando routes are seemingly poised to attract customers away from Spirit and Southwest
both of which already fly in Delta's new Orlando markets
(The only route that Spirit doesn't fly is Grand Rapids to Orlando.)
Both Spirit and Southwest are undergoing major commercial transformations
so it's possible that Delta senses some weakness at these carriers and hopes to capitalize on that as much as it can

Elsewhere across its network, Delta will add a slew of special one-off flights for college football fans. The airline announced on Friday that it plans to add 40 additional flights for key matchups, such as LSU at Clemson, Texas at Ohio State and several Notre Dame games.
Most of these additional flights will depart on Fridays and return on Sundays, making it easy to choose Delta for a quick out-and-back gameday weekend.
In total, Delta plans to add 8,000 additional seats across its network for the college football season.

Renovations are underway to transform Delta Center into a state-of-the-art, dual-sport venue
Delta Center was originally built in 1991 as the home of the Utah Jazz, underwent a significant top-to-bottom renovation in 2017, and was modified again in 2024 to accommodate Utah’s new NHL team. The multi-year transformation that begins now will be the arena’s most extensive and innovative inside-out effort yet, centered on changing the geometry of the arena bowl to optimize hockey sightlines and enhance the overall experience.
Implementing an Innovative Riser System in the Lower Bowl
For basketball, the riser system will consist of 29 rows of retractable seats that extend over 28 feet from the Level 3 concourse down to the court behind each baseline – all designed to ensure the arena maintains its steep slope that will continue to put Jazz fans in incredibly close proximity to the court.
When all renovations are complete, seating capacity for hockey will increase from 11,131 to approximately 17,000 – with every seat in the upper and lower bowls having full views of both goals – and capacity for basketball will increase from 18,206 to nearly 19,000 seats.
SEG contracted with Michigan-based StageRight for this unique and innovative retractable seating system.
To make room for the new riser system and the installation of a new ice floor slab, SEG is lengthening the arena bowl by approximately 12 feet at each end and raising the floor two feet. These changes will improve sightlines along the sidelines, in the corners, and throughout the upper and lower bowl, and set the stage for future upper bowl renovations.
Major interior and exterior construction will continue during future NBA and NHL offseasons. Plans include adding an east-facing main entrance and plaza that will serve as a gateway to the heart of downtown; redesigning the existing plaza and concourses; and remodeling upper bowl seating to improve sightlines.
SEG brought on three world-renowned groups to help drive the Delta Center transformation project: Utah-based Okland Construction is the general contractor; SCI Architects is the lead design firm; and CAA Icon serves as a strategic advisor.

Delta to fly nonstop to Copenhagen and Stockholm, and to over 35 destinations across Scandinavia through its partnership with SAS this summer.
Scandinavia comes alive during Midsummer in late June, when locals celebrate with flower crowns, outdoor feasts, and nearly endless daylight near the Arctic Circle. As the sun dips low but never disappears, the sky glows with watercolor hues and bonfires, wildflowers, and maypole dances mark the region’s most treasured traditions. It’s an authentic and vibrant tribute to light, nature, and togetherness and one of the most immersive and cultural experiences of the Nordic summer.
Some midsummer celebrations include:
There is perhaps no better place to celebrate Midsummer in Norway than near the Lofoten Islands. Located within the Arctic Circle, visitors will experience true Midnight Sun as the sun never sets! Small villages in the region will hold traditional bonfires on beaches or rocky outcrops, creating dramatic scenes against the glowing sky. Visitors can also visit Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city, surrounded by fjords and mountains for bonfires along the waterfront and musical performances.
Delta is expanding access to the Nordics with seasonal service designed to help U.S. travelers experience the magic of the season and all that the region has to offer. With Delta and through our new partnership with SAS, it’s never been easier to chase the midnight sun:
All of these destinations served by SAS can now be booked directly on delta.com where you can earn and redeem SkyMiles on eligible travel.
As ‘coolcations’ become a major travel trend for 2025, Scandinavia continues to grow in popularity for travelers. Whether they are looking to escape the summer heat back home, a deeper connection to nature in the pristine fjords and mountains of Norway, or the Michelin Guide life in Denmark and Sweden, there truly is something for every traveler- no matter the time of year.
but there remain occasional ways to get outsize value from the program
I tell people to save their SkyMiles for upgrades or to book last-minute tickets when prices are high
you will not often get more than a cent per point in value
I recently returned from a trip to Australia after finding what I would consider a unicorn redemption: a deal so rare that those of us in the points and miles community consider it to be nearly mythical
I booked a one-way ticket from Mexico City to Los Angeles and then on to Brisbane
for just 73,100 Delta SkyMiles and $119.93 in taxes and fees
These days, that would be an incredible deal in economy, but this was first class to Mexico City and Delta One business class for the 14-hour flight across the Pacific
Here's how I scored this amazing deal and what it was like flying Delta One on the Airbus A350-900
it was common to find saver-level award redemptions in Delta business class by originating in Mexico City with a stop in one of its U.S
hubs like Los Angeles or Atlanta before continuing on to your final destination
If you instead tried to book just the portion of the trip from a U.S
You can still sometimes find good value positioning to Mexico City (or other Latin American airports)
but you'll have to luck out like I did to find a really good deal
In my case, I subscribe to deal alerts from both Thrifty Traveler and Going
both services are worth the cost for premium deal alerts
Thrifty Traveler's top membership plan
Its Premium plan gives you access to business-class deal alerts for $99.99
When I wake up, I usually check my email to see if they've sent anything interesting. One Saturday last summer, I saw an alert in my inbox from Thrifty Traveler saying you could book to and from Brisbane in Delta One for just 80,000 SkyMiles one-way. Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity to fly in Delta One on the newly launched
the price ended up being just 73,100 SkyMiles plus $120 in taxes and fees
That's one of the best deals I've ever seen for a business-class award to Australia
Cash prices for this ticket hovered between $6,468 and $8,900 one-way for similar dates
and on dates when this deal was not available
award tickets priced out at 465,000 SkyMiles
I never did learn exactly what happened that these flights were such a deal
Was it because it was a newly launched route
or was Delta offering promotional pricing to excite people
I haven't ever seen prices drop that low again
Just note that this is a seasonal route that ended in March
and it will not be back in service until Oct
it never hurts to check the price on flights from Mexico City when looking for deals (especially when new routes from LAX get loaded into the system)
Pay attention to those new route announcements
and read on for a mini flight review of my Delta One experience
Delta's flagship Delta One suites can be found aboard the airline's Airbus A350s and A330-900neos
They include sliding doors for privacy; solid tech
including large entertainment screens; varied menus; and high-end amenities
This was the first time at Los Angeles International Airport that I got to use Delta's new Delta One check-in area
where you enter via a separate door at the Terminal 3 arrivals level far away from the crowds of other departing passengers
There's a small lounge if you want to grab a drink before security
I was even greeted by an attendant with a hot towel
Previous slideNext slide1 of 4CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY0123After a quick document check, I passed through the private security screening area and took the elevator up into the main concourse and entered the Delta One Lounge
This lounge is a little slice of heaven with a bevy of food and beverage choices; an island of desserts; massage chairs available on a first-come
first-served basis; and views of Delta jets on the runway
Previous slideNext slide1 of 6CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY012345I was sad because I only had a few hours to enjoy it before it was time to board my flight
My Delta jet, ship number N518DZ, was just 2 years old. Delta Air Lines operates A350-900s seasonally on its flights to Brisbane (as well as destinations like Cape Town and Tokyo)
This three-times-weekly route operates from late October to the end of March
Delta One on the A350 consists of 32 suites in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration
I love the stylish finishes and the mood lighting in the cabin
though that means space for carry-ons is more limited than you might find on other aircraft
All the suites have sliding privacy doors that are easy to engage and operate once they are unlatched after takeoff
Previous slideNext slide1 of 3CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY012The bed is wider than you'll find on some of the older Delta jets operating internationally
The airline has really stepped up its bedding game
adding a lumbar support pillow and a mattress pad on many of its longer flights
The pillow and blankets are made from eco-friendly materials including recycled bottles
That meant I was able to get some good sleep
though I do miss the Delta's former Westin "Heavenly" bedding
Previous slideNext slide1 of 3CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY012I love the new Missoni amenity kits with the signature zigzag patterning that Delta is giving out now in business class
All my friends have requested one after seeing the photos
The suite's seat controls and 4K inflight entertainment screen were easy to use
The tray table provided plenty of surface area to work or eat on
Previous slideNext slide1 of 6CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY012345A predeparture choice of sparkling wine
orange juice or water was offered while boarding was underway
meal service started with warm nuts and drinks
That was followed by starters and the main course
the airline might consider coursing out meals on a long flight like this
just to lend the service a more elevated feel
The appetizers were poached shrimp and a baby arugula salad, along with garlic-thyme focaccia with a pat of Banner butter (from an Atlanta-based farm). I had preselected the baked rigatoni and broccoli as a main course. While Delta has stepped up its food-and-beverage service recently
I found this particular dinner to be quite bland
Dessert was an ice cream sundae with strawberry sauce sprinkled with cookie crumbs. It was delicious, but I would have liked to have a customizable sundae like the ones on American Airlines.
There were plenty of self-serve snacks in the galley, and the flight attendants were always willing to make a drink for you as well.
There was a second midflight meal service: a small salad served with baguette pizza. It was delicious, if a bit heavy.
Finally, about an hour before landing, we were served a hearty breakfast of sausage, eggs, potatoes, a croissant and fresh fruit. I definitely didn't leave the flight hungry.
Service on this flight was phenomenal from start to finish. The flight attendant named Lynn, who was working my side of the plane in Delta One, was friendly and responsive. Steve, the purser, and I had a few great conversations. They were both longtime veterans of the airline business who joined Delta after working for other airlines earlier in their careers.
We had an early arrival in Brisbane, and I was off on my Australian adventure.
Overall, the flight was excellent ... especially considering I spent just over 73,000 Delta SkyMiles. The same flight booked for next year was priced at $8,823 when I checked in April. For me, no business-class seat is worth that price tag, which is why I so love using points and miles.
Despite what you've heard, you can still squeeze an incredible amount of value out of Delta SkyMiles, whether it's an upgrade or scoring a once-in-a-blue-moon Delta One business-class flight to Australia as I did.
The Delta One suites aboard Delta's A350-900s are the airline's top product, and thanks to the sliding door and sizable lie-flat bed, this is among the most comfortable business-class seats I've flown.
I'd happily book this flight again, especially if I found another Delta One deal like I did on this one.
SALT LAKE CITY — Ryan and Ashley Smith might be the first to agree that it's an "unthinkable feat" to add an ice rink to an arena built solely with basketball in mind
They initially intended to build a new arena when they first embarked on the quest to bring the NHL to Utah
but those plans changed when the Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club owners faced pushback from state leaders
and when they were presented with plans that showed it could be done
Construction began last week on a three-year plan to drastically remodel the Delta Center
The vision includes a lower bowl that preserves revered "close-to-the-action" seating during Jazz games
while removing the pesky sightline barriers and providing fans "full views" from every lower bowl seat during Hockey Club games beginning next season
according to new details Smith Entertainment Group unveiled on Wednesday
Other modifications inside the arena are also on tap for this year
but the company also has its eyes set on the first phases of a "sports
culture and convention district" outside of the arena
Future plans include a 450-stall parking structure by the building's southwest corner
When the full arena project wraps up a year later
its revamped eastern entrance will serve as the entry point to a future outdoor plaza that took a major step toward reality this week
"We are excited for the challenge as we kick off this never-before-done renovation project," the Smiths said
"This transformation will create the most compelling
welcoming and exciting experience for hockey fans
while also allowing us to maintain the steep vertical seating for basketball that has made Delta Center such a dynamic venue with its loud atmosphere that energizes our players night after night."
The main reason for the overhaul is to fix the hockey sightlines of the arena; however
SEG didn't want to sacrifice the intimate feel for basketball games the arena has long been known for over the years
A new retractable seating system will have a 12-foot variance in elevation between rink and court endlines to offer optimal sightlines for both the NBA and NHL
The riser system will create a higher pitch for hockey games
allowing more seats on the goal side of the arena
"The change in rake is greater than any other building to switch over between basketball and hockey," SCI architects Lawrence Lippold said
Fans won't feel much of a change during basketball games
the new configuration will add seats behind each goal and provide more on-the-board seating that was limited during the Utah Hockey Club's first season
A visual showing the Delta Center's new riser seating system
(Photo: Smith Entertainment Group)To make it all work
the arena floor will be raised two feet and the bowl will be lengthened by 12 feet on each end
That will help alleviate some of the sightline issues that fans experienced in both the upper and lower bowls
most upper-bowl seats behind each goal were limited to "single-goal" viewing
"Raising that floor is what was necessary to get those sightlines so that every seat in the upper and the lower bowl would have full view of the ice for hockey," SEG executive Jim Olson said
But that won't all be ready for next season
The team has two more offseasons of construction planned to complete the renovations and further address those issues
seating capacity for hockey will increase from 11,131 to approximately 17,000
and capacity for basketball will increase from 18,206 to nearly 19,000 seats
Some of the first steps of the project outside of the arena are also beginning to take shape
Crews will start laying the foundation of a multi-story parking garage by 200 South and 400 West outside of the arena's southwest side this summer
which is somewhat tied to the lower bowl construction
An artist rendering of a new 450-stall parking garage outside of the Delta Center
but isn't expected to be ready this season
(Photo: Smith Entertainment Group)Much like interior plans
exterior construction will also go through an offseason once the NBA and NHL seasons return
Vertical construction will begin next year
as the company eyes to have it ready in time for the 2026-2027 seasons
it will have three connecting points with the arena for high-end ticketholders
"The garage is going to be utilized — for the most part — for our premium seats
"Those connecting points will be tied into the arena where people have the best access to get into their respective areas."
Crews will shift their attention to the east exterior afterward
crafting a new type of entrance leading out toward a planned outdoor plaza
Updated designs weren't shared as planning continues
but the idea there is to create a space for watch parties and community events
marking a major step toward creating the plaza
The so-called "mid block" project may also include venue space for the 2034 Winter Olympics
The deal isn't expected to close until early 2027
Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said partial demolition of the convention center could begin later that year
which is also when Delta Center's remodel is expected to wrap up
Conversations over 300 West, the road between the arena and convention center, are ongoing, said Mike Maughan, who has led district planning for Smith Entertainment Group. State lawmakers proposed a bill that would have shifted control of the road from the Utah Department of Transportation to Salt Lake City
More details on that side of planning could be released in the "coming months."

Several airlines have pulled back in recent weeks on expansion plans as consumers and businesses reduce spending amid a choppy economy. Delta CEO Ed Bastian said broad economic uncertainty around global trade has stalled growth
