— Businesses across the country will be affected by President Donald Trump’s decision to increase tariffs for international imports after a 90-day pause
but some will pay the price more than others
Jackson Joo is a manager at Woo Sung Oriental Food Mart in Fairview Shores
The store provides authentic Asian products to customers
including items you would not find at a traditional grocery store
“Our most important providers are Korean providers
and we contact some Japanese and other Asian countries,” said Joo
Joo says it takes one week for shipment to arrive from their providers
“I don’t think it is really fast because if you buy something on Amazon
and they have to find some delivery drivers.”
Joo told Spectrum News he prices their items a certain percentage higher than what they paid
including a 145% increase on imports from China
it is going to cost Asian stores more than others
the president’s 90-day pause is buying them some time
“I think it’s still too early to make predictions about the price because we haven’t seen the specific fluctuation in product prices yet,” said Joo
He says it is all about perspective and he is trying to stay optimistic
but all businesses can do for now is wait and see how the increase in tariffs will affect them

LAKE FAIRVIEW SHORES, Fla. – Orange County Fire Rescue reportedly helped get a family to shelter early Thursday as Hurricane Milton flooded Lake Fairview Shores on its way out to sea
The family of four was the subject of a water rescue from out of the 2700 block of Hambleton Avenue
News 6 Anchor Ryan Welch visited the neighborhood and spoke with OCFR Lt
who said that nobody else wanted to evacuate
affecting a few streets in this neighborhood
We’ve made contact with everybody that we could in this neighborhood and right now nobody wanted to evacuate
so we’re still going to check back in the next hour or two as the water continues to rise and the weather still is affecting us,” Allen said
Welch was told that everyone in the neighborhood was safe
Our cameras were rolling as the flood waters gradually began to subside
retreating to the sides of the street and further
Allen described the heightened workload for first responders as hurricane-related missions stacked atop otherwise unrelated calls for service
Besides just the hurricane calls we’re running right now
just the regular 911 calls that we receive on a daily basis are still happening
People are still having medical emergencies
we’re still having house fires unrelated to the hurricane
so having the special teams like the Swift Water Team out here being able to handle some of these more dangerous calls is huge for us,” Allen said
“(...)It seems like every hurricane that we respond to now
The first couple years it was kind of in the Hope Circle area
during Ian we had it on the east side of town and this is kind of a new area for us when it comes to flood conditions so
every storm I think we learn a little bit more as far as what we need to do.”

West Shore School District officials are moving forward with a major reshuffling of students as the district prepares to replace Fairview Elementary School and
which brings in roughly 230 students from northern York and southeast Cumberland counties
is scheduled to close after the current school year
it will be replaced with a new intermediate school
the district's operations and planning director
said they have hit a few snags moving forward in the approval process for the construction of a new school
“Some owners have been unresponsive to the district’s communication,” Sanders said at a Thursday school board meeting

Sanders said it was important to continue with the process — namely

Schools in poor condition: All of this is part of a multiyear process that began in 2016
when a study found that a number of schools in the district were in poor condition
six of the 14 schools had heating systems more than 30 years old
The $85 million project will ultimately result in the construction of two new intermediate schools
“As those (intermediate) schools open," Sanders said
"they’re going to serve all students in the West Shore School District in the fifth and sixth grades.”
While the district prepares to close one of the elementary schools
officials are facing an issue with where to send those students
Sanders said that will necessitate changes in some of the geographic boundaries set up to determine which schools students attend
“So that students are no longer separated from their peers as they matriculate through the system and move from one building to the other," he explained

Chaotic system: The current system can sometimes be a chaotic one
Sanders said one Fairview student will be sent to New Cumberland Middle School and then back to Red Land High School
separating him from the other students who instead attend Crossroads Middle School
The staff created a report with a series of grids for each area
showing where the students may go in the upcoming years
Each school's demographics were included in the report
All of this factors in expected areas of population growth due to residential development
as the district tries to accommodate more children without forcing them to endure long bus rides

– Summer is here and while some families may be excited about the end of the school year
others are working harder to make ends meet with their kids at home
But there is a program stocking pantries for free and all it takes is a visit to your local library
I need food on the table,” Anna Chintaman said
So she’s walked out of the Chickasaw Branch library carrying a box filled with food
“It does lift a burden that I have some more food because it’s always needed and things are harder to get these days,” Chintaman said
In partnership with the Orange County Library System, The Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida delivers stacks of boxes each week to several branches throughout Orange County to help those in need
“We’re seeing that one in eight of our neighbors are experiencing hunger for any number of reasons,” Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Communications Manager Erika Spence said
Spence said one of the biggest reasons is inflation
That’s something Angel Aloneso said is making it difficult for him and his family to make ends meet
“It’s a really good experience because it helps people in the community a little bit
It won’t cover everything for the family but even [a box of food] is a big help,” Aloneso said
Every Tuesday morning at five of OCLS’s branches
The program is funded by the Orange County Government and provides about a week’s worth of non-perishable food items like pasta
vegetables and more to help feed families and stock empty pantries

– Two people are behind bars facing first-degree murder charges after officers said they shot and killed a man Wednesday in what appears to be a drug-related robbery
according to the Orlando Police Department
Officers responded to 1779 Fairview Shores Dr
they found a man inside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest
He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries
A witness at the scene told officers they saw a man
later identified as 18-year-old Lakari Miller
The witness told police Miller is friends with Kathryn Klein
The witness said they saw Miller enter the home and was directed upstairs to the bathroom near the victim’s bedroom
where they heard a gunshot about 20 seconds later
and was then confronted by Miller who ran down the stairs
“The witness stated the victim was known to sell drugs and had drugs in this bedroom,” officers wrote in a report
“Responding officers reported seeing a white powdery substance that appeared to be illicit narcotics in an open safe inside the victim’s bedroom while conducting a protective sweep of the residence for suspects and additional victims immediately after their arrival.”
Officers said Klein left the home about two minutes after the shooting
Investigators determined Klein lived at the residence and was in the process of moving out of the home in the days leading up to the murder
“The witness believes the suspects were brought to the scene just prior to the murder by Klein and Klein’s vehicle was seen on neighboring home surveillance cameras on the street just prior to the murder corroborating the witness’ account
was seen leaving the area immediately following the murder,” officers wrote in a report
officers made contact with Klein and Miller at the intersection of Sheeler Road and North Orange Blossom Trail
he told them he stayed at the home for the entire day except to visit his brother’s home
Officers said Miller maintained that he never went anywhere else the entire day even after being shown a picture taken of him in Daytona Beach later in the evening following the murder
“He continued to lie and say he didn’t know what I was talking about and was not truthful or cooperative with my investigation,” an officer wrote in a report
Both Miller and Klein were arrested and transported to the Orange County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and robbery with a firearm
Both are being held at the jail without bond
A project to shore up riverbanks and stabilize steep cliffs in Fairview Beach is underway
residents were concerned the road beside it would collapse
Mike Bennett and Kristen Pruitt gather at the cliff base
Riprap is being hauled in to help stabilize the Potomac River shoreline
Landscaping will be placed when the work is completed
The Fairview Beach community has been fighting riverbank erosion for years
there were concerns the road would collapse
sending it and a sewer pipe into the water
County officials and volunteers worked to get an application to FEMA to help cover the costs
After many years the stabilization work on the riverbank was started in April
The sewer line between the road and the cliffside was in danger of collapsing if measures were not taken
Finish Line owner Kristen Pruitt and retired engineer Chris Werle stand atop the riverbank
Chris Werle (left) and Jim Holley share some thoughts on the riverbank erosion over the years at Fairview Beach
Holley lives across the street from the riverbank and grateful that the repair work is being done
From his well-manicured lawn on Fairview Drive
Jim Holley has watched the steep banks overlooking the Potomac River erode from rain rushing down the top of the slope to wind and waves beating against the bottom
whose home is perched between Second and Third streets in the riverfront village
“It would crack at the top and then fall away a few days later
You never could really tell how undermined it was
Kristen Pruitt of Finish Line Environmental and Chris Werle of King George talk about a project to control erosion at Fairview Beach
not only about his retirement home falling into the river
but also about the infrastructure in front of the house
That includes a county-owned sewer pipe and the road that carries “a lot of precious cargo on school buses,” he said
When King George County received $2.3 million in federal and state grants to stabilize the steep cliffs and shore up the riverbank
and big trucks started arriving in April to do the work
I walked out on the bluff and said thank goodness.”
So did a lot of others associated with the project
Members of the Fairview Beach Residents Association have held spaghetti dinners
yard sales and golf tournaments over the decades to raise money to put up walls to prevent erosion
an association member and former director on the King George County Service Authority
Residents came to realize they would never be able to sell enough cupcakes to pay for the kind of project needed—to prevent the destruction coming from both top and bottom that Holley noted
Bennett started beseeching the Board of Supervisors for help and it took a while—and lots of collaboration among county
state and federal officials—before a proposal came together
Then it took more years for both phases of the project to be approved
When the county broke ground for the project in April
Bennett walked along the shoreline before the ceremony
He spends part of the winters in Florida and noticed how much more had been eroded in his absence
it’s washed away a whole lot of bank,” he said
This is really getting done in the nick of time.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency contributed 75 percent of the $2.3 million price tag
the Virginia Department of Emergency Management
King George provided a local match of 5 percent
The county paid $20,000 for an environmental assessment—in hopes of speeding up the process—and the Virginia Department of Transportation kicked in $36,000 since a state road was involved
King George is contributing its remaining $60,438 in labor costs as almost every county office has been involved
from administration and finance to community development and fire and rescue
from grant managers with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management who helped with the application process to representatives from VDOT
the George Washington Regional Planning Commission and U.S
Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Annie Cupka said people from so many different agencies worked together that “my favorite letter of the alphabet is C” as in collaboration
both between the various groups and within the community
as Bennett walked along the same shoreline again—and watched the progress of construction workers—he thanked “one of the most indispensable people” to this project
Another former board member on the Service Authority
Werle also is retired from the Army Corps of Engineers and spent years writing proposals
He shepherded the grant application through the state and federal hoops
emphasizing that the project went far beyond erosion at a private beach
Destruction of the road would impact the 500 vehicles that use it daily
Firefighters and rescuers would be impeded and those in 33 homes adjacent to the road would be impacted
Each project looks at the ratio of risk involved to benefit achieved
and Werle said the Fairview Beach application received a “5,” meaning that the $2.3 million saved would prevent the loss of more than $11.5 million in infrastructure and homes
“I don’t think there’s anyone else in King George County who could have done this,” Bennett said about Werle’s work with writing the grant
Werle wanted to focus more on the work being done by Finish Line Environmental
a Spotsylvania County company that is constructing a new seawall to prevent the riverbank from washing into the Potomac
It’s also grading and stabilizing the steep slopes to prevent more erosion
The work stretches from the beach area around Tim’s II Restaurant to 1,200 feet down shore
Crews put in a makeshift gravel road for their heavy machinery and installed riprap to create a seawall
Each chunk of riprap weighs between 150 and 500 pounds
and the project requires 8,500 tons of the stone—or about 525 loads on the company’s biggest dump truck
the riverbank had no gradual decline at all—just a sheer drop-off about 30 feet to the beach below
workers will bring in about 920 truckloads of dirt
The crew will work in 100-foot sections until all 12 sections are completed
The project should be complete by later this year
It’s designed to withstand the kind of hurricane or weather disaster that comes along once a century
“This had to be good for a 100-year storm.”

We can talk about that next month though when we hopefully get some more info

They were supposed to be opening in February 2023 in a former Subway building on Colonial Drive near Little Vietnam
but permitting and supply chains have been holding them hostage.
besides the fact that they misspelled “cellar,” this under-development concept in downtown Orlando is already billing itself as “Orlando’s next best restaurant.” It’ll be located on the ground floor of the new Hilton Garden Inn where the old City Diner used to be and will offer a selection of “handcrafted cuisine

Tim’s Rivershore Restaurant and Crab House
a landmark on the Potomac River outside Dumfries for nearly three decades
must close for good after Potomac Shores declined to renew the lease
“I wish I wasn’t telling you this,” he said in a Facebook Live video
which took over management of Potomac Shores in the last year
he had been in talks with the developer to renew the lease
I got a call that the lease wouldn’t be renewed,” Bauckman told InsideNoVa
Biddle did not immediately return an email for comment
Tim’s II at Fairview Beach in King George County
Tim’s at Lake Anna in Mineral will and Tim’s at Coles Point in Hague will remain open
The Dumfries area location will be open on weekends through the end of March as crews slowly move out
“I don’t think we’ve been anything but good for the community over the years,” Bauckman said
noting the restaurant has been the site of local Polar Plunge events for years
as well as a contributor to local schools and other charitable causes
The restaurant opened on the shores of the Potomac River at the end of the Cherry Hill peninsula 28 years ago
Bauckman owned the restaurant property for many years
but after Hurricane Isabel left severe damage in 2003

Jay Mossman was standing with his 8-year-old grandson
talking with a project manager Friday at his beach house
just south of Cape Henlopen State Park in Rehoboth Beach
Turns out, Mossman nearly purchased the house in question on Farview Road, but his wife, Nancy, was looking for something a little closer to the house where Jack Nicholson famously fell for Diane Keaton in the 2003 movie "Something's Gotta Give."
And he's happy to see who ended up buying the home
fulfilled a longtime dream by purchasing a vacation home at the Delaware seashore
their purchase is steps away from land Joe Biden helped return to federal status
The Bidens will keep their primary home in Greenville
MORE: Biden buys home in Cape Henlopen State Park area
A listing for the contemporary indigo blue house
boasts a “spectacular one-of-a-kind North Shores Beach House” that backs up to Cape Henlopen State Park with ocean views and multiple outdoor decks
The six-bedroom house (including three master bedrooms) features 5½ bathrooms
outdoor showers and “a doggy wash too,” according to the listing
floor-to-ceiling bookcases; and high-end finishes
according to photos that accompanied the listing
Sussex County property records show that the property
is owned by Diane Smith and Jayne Kettles of New Hope
Smith confirmed the sale Friday but declined to discuss the details
including the closing date and purchase price
“I know how much Delaware loves the Bidens
“We respect everyone’s privacy.”

Asked if the Bidens moving to town would create more chaos
influential people that fold in and out throughout the summers
I don’t think it’s going to get worse.”
marveled over the “great third-floor master that looks all the way out into the ocean.” He said he met Biden recently when he was out looking at homes
Mossman said his neighbors next door are good friends of the Bidens. And when the Bidens previously paid visits
Mossman's lot was used for extra parking by the Secret Service
Biden should be too busy these days to be purchasing a beach house
I wish he would have run for president," Mossman said. "And I hope he continues to speak openly
regardless of whether he decides to run for office again."
both Joe and Jill are likely to spend a lot of time writing in their new home
they'll probably spend time at Browseabout Books on Rehoboth Avenue
where general manager Susan Kehoe recalled tales of previous book signings
“I’m sure we will see him more often," she said
On the walls inside Hearn's ice cream shop are pictures of Biden from previous summers
“Here’s the VP of the United States or (previously) a big-time senator taking the time to say hi to 19- and 20-year-olds working their butts off in the summer," Hearn said. "That’s a big deal to them
"He's just regular Delaware Joe," said Melinda Mullen
Rehoboth-Dewey Chamber of Commerce President Carol Everhart said Biden's arrival could bring only good things to the area
“You have someone who is internationally known
making a purchase in this area; it brings it to the forefront,” Everhart said
Everhart said Biden was already a valuable member of the Rehoboth community
She said from time to time he would attend the Rehoboth-Dewey chamber’s general membership meetings
“We’re looking forward to seeing him more often,” Everhart said
Republican or worship bologna," Hearn said
“He sort of defies party lines,” Kehoe said
“I think no matter what side of the political fence you are
I think it’s going to do nothing but promote goodwill because he’s just so genuine and friendly
It’s only going to be a good thing.”
“The thing about the vice president is he’s just down to earth,” Mossman said
I think he’ll be a great neighbor.”
Sometimes party lines do indeed get in the way
two men sitting on a bench outside the Rehoboth Beach Variety store were asked for a reaction to the new celebrity in town
When Democratic presidential debates are scheduled in the coming months
maybe there will be one at the Henlopen Acres Beach Club
It’s well-known that former Vice President Joe Biden has a home in North Shores
Significantly less known is that candidate John Delaney also has a home in North Shores
and this one has an arguably better view than Biden’s
representative for Maryland's 6th congressional district from 2013 to 2019
Biden officially announced his candidacy in late April
while Delaney has been on the campaign trail since 2017
choosing to not run for re-election in 2018
Biden made local headlines when he purchased the North Shores home in during the summer of 2017
County tax records show he paid $2.7 million for the home
Jill and I have dreamed of being able to buy a place at the beach at home where we can bring the whole family," Biden wrote in a statement at the time
pictures of Biden at Cape Region shops and eateries have appeared with regularity on social media
County records show Delaney purchased his oceanfront home in 2010 for $4.4 million
Delaney hinted at the Rehoboth connection in a tweet earlier this month after Biden
said he was the only real Irishman running for president
“I’m sure there’s a civil way to figure this all out – maybe over a pint of Guinness in Rehoboth
Henlopen Acres Mayor Joni Reich said she’s known for a while about the connection between the two men
She said she has friends in Henlopen Acres who are friends with the Delaneys from suburban Maryland
She laughed when asked about being the elected official in closest proximity to two presidential candidates
“We welcome all candidates who want to run for the highest office in the land,” said Reich
Delaney’s oceanfront property is the immediate neighbor to the north of the Henlopen Acres Beach Club
Reich said the small town has had a good relationship with the Delaneys
letting the family know in advance when events are planned
Sussex County Republican Committee Chair Don Petitmermet said he wasn’t aware of the Sussex County connection of the two candidates
“Sussex County is a great place to have a second home
and it’s a great place to retire,” said Petitmermet
Neither Biden nor Delaney responded to requests for comment
