the Eameses gifted her a low-slung upholstered chair after she admired a similar version in the Girards’s Santa Fe home As part of the new Herman Miller collection a fully upholstered Eames Wire Chair Low Base revives the prototype that was given to O’Keeffe The new edition includes a white wire frame and base with partial “bikini” upholstery in Girard’s Toostripe textile in ochre and sienna The chair will be produced in an edition of 300 with 250 chairs available in North America—for $1,995 apiece—and 50 in Japan will bring to life a concept Girard never realized The designer’s snake motif appeared in several of the pieces in O’Keeffe’s home The table features a white enamel steel top printed with Girard’s black snake motif It will be available in a limited run of 100 with 90 tables—priced at $895 apiece—in North America and 10 in Japan The collection is officially launching at 12 p.m Herman Miller is staging a preview of both designs along with archival photography taken by Girard and Charles Eames during their visits to O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú home at its New York store at 251 Park Avenue South The first 100 visitors to the store on May 20th at 10 a.m will receive a bandana inspired by the Girard snake motif 05-05-2025DESIGN The new collection tells the story of a little-known friendship between the Eameses BY Grace Snelling You’ve probably heard of Charles and Ray Eames, the designers behind the iconic Eames chair and ottoman But you might not know about how these artists were connected during their careers—or the art that came from their camaraderie the founding director of Herman Miller’s textile division Included in the launch are 300 special Eames Wire Chairs and 100 iterations of the never-before-sold Girard Snake Table Both of the items offer a look into the intertwined artistic legacies of three designers whose work continues to shape the art world today Georgia O’Keeffe first met Alexander Girard and his wife O’Keeffe had already been living in the remote rural town of Abiquiú and was already a household name across the country at the time of their meeting for her lush and evocative depictions of the natural world many of which were inspired by flora and fauna native to her local surroundings “[The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum] can’t say for sure exactly when and how they met but suffice it to say there weren’t too many world renowned artists and designers living in that area and apparently they felt a real kinship,” says Kelsey Keith where she learned that there are records of 20 to 30 years of correspondence between the Girards and O’Keeffe—not just to advise each other on artistic projects but also to trade the kinds of casual stories that maintain a decades-long friendship “They ended up traveling together all over the world,” Keith says “Girard and his wife would go on these folk art collecting trips to Central and South America and to Japan and [O’Keeffe] actually accompanied them on some of those trips I think you have to be pretty good friends with someone to take those kinds of trips together.” It was through the Girards that the Eameses entered the picture Girard was already close to the Eameses; in fact the design duo had actually landed him his job When the Eameses first began to design furniture for Herman Miller in the ‘40s (the company has now owned the exclusive distribution rights to Eames designs for decades in all regions except Europe and the Middle East) Charles and Ray asked for Girard to be brought on with them as “a real design partner not just someone to sort of decoratively apply fabrics after the fact,” Keith says the Girards and the Eameses became both close colleagues and friends The Girards soon introduced the Eameses to O’Keeffe since the Eameses lived a state away from O’Keeffe in Los Angeles and were known to attend the Girards’ annual Christmas parties and the Eameses informed the work of all four creatives The new Eames Wire Chair Low Base and Girard Snake Table both serve as a window into this period of artistic cross-pollination The chair is inspired by a wire chair originally gifted by Ray Eames to O’Keeffe as decor in her Abiquiú home and studio O’Keeffe’s home and studio are now preserved as museum exhibitions and for good reason: Her minimalist-yet-aesthetically pleasing and highly curated approach to interior design draws visitors to view her former residence year-round O’Keeffe had high standards when it came to outfitting her space “Georgia loved [the chair] so much that she wrote a thank-you note and actually asked for another one just like it which is hilarious—that someone sends you a gift The original chair has a little label on it that Ray hand-drew to Georgia.” Instead of making an exact replica of Ray’s original gift to O’Keeffe Herman Miller decided to create a product that would merge elements of the Eames’ design and O’Keeffe’s interior decor The New Mexico Collection’s wire chair is a classic Eames frame on a low base an homage to the fairly low ceilings and smaller furniture in O’Keeffe’s home The chair is upholstered in a bikini style (think two inverted triangles stacked together) with an ochre and sienna striped fabric designed by Girard and intended to match with the Abiquiú home’s adobe interiors While the new wire chair is a contemporary design made from archival elements, the Girard Snake Table is a close replica of a prototype made by Girard in the ‘50s that was never widely produced (though it occasionally pops up on auction sites.) The table features a splayed-leg aluminum base and steel top printed with a custom illustration of a snake made by Girard Snake imagery was a preoccupation of both Girard’s and O’Keeffe’s O’Keeffe was so enamored with the snake’s form that when an archaeologist fan sent her a preserved skeleton she had it encased in a bench in her living room visitors to the O’Keeffe house will find the snake’s final resting place as well as an original pillow made by Girard featuring one of his snake drawings so snake motifs are really prevalent,” Keith says “I think what’s interesting about this is that Girard interpreted that motif in his own way—in a very graphic sense—and then [O’Keeffe] also took inspiration from the natural world and had this snake skeleton embedded in the banco in her house.” the New Mexico Collection truly came together when she was able to see the final products arranged in O’Keeffe’s home overlooking the New Mexico landscape through sweeping glass windows because when we brought in the limited-run products to photograph in [O’Keeffe’s] house it looks like they were meant to be there,” Keith says The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. two of which on a Zach Ward walk-off double Ward’s double lifted Girard to its 11th win of the season and pulled the Indians within half a game of the top of the NE-8 “Happy for our guys,” Girard coach Aaron Alejars said “That’s been a premier team in the area for years and years So [this is] a nice experience for our guys to just win in that kind of fashion there The Indians fell behind in the first inning after Carmine Tukalo stole home while Girard’s infield was focused on Jacob Hayes stealing second base Poland extended its lead in the third inning when Tukalo scored on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead Mike Daley pushed Poland’s advantage to three runs in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out single to left field Despite picking up two outs immediately to start the bottom of the fourth inning Girard cut into the lead following a pair of walks and an RBI single by Camron Herrick The Indians remained behind in the fifth and sixth after leaving runners on base Evan Tuttle grounded out with bases loaded while three consecutive batters failed to advance Kaiden Clare after a leadoff single in the sixth after Dominick Tolone retired the side in order Will Hynes led off the half-inning with a single to right field before Dominic Phillips drew a walk to bring the winning run to the plate Jaden Royal then drove in the Indians’ second run of the game on a single to right which scored Hynes and moved Phillips to third Royal’s hit prompted a pitching change for the Bulldogs who replaced starter Jacob Hayes with Joe Zuccaro putting both runners on base in scoring position then drove in both Phillips and Royal on a double launching a celebration at home plate and second base for the Indians something like that can’t happen,” Alejars said “The only way you come back is if you believe.” Alejars’s belief in Tolone also paid off The Girard starter walked three batters of the first 10 batters he faced and ran into some trouble in the middle innings … To go the whole game there and just overcome and just stay with it and give us a chance to do that I’d like to commend him and his efforts there,” Alejars said “[He was] just keeping his head even from behind and he gave us a chance to pull that off.” Wednesday’s loss marks just the second time this season the Bulldogs have not come out as winners “It was a good baseball game,” Poland head coach was planned and organized by four members of the Girard High School National Honor Society with proceeds benefiting the Emmanuel Community Care Center in Girard The race took place Sunday afternoon at Girard High School and was the brainchild of four Girard High School National Honor Society members Proceeds will benefit the Emmanuel Community Care Center (ECCC) in Girard which provides food and clothing to those in need from the community “We remembered the color run held after Justin Leo passed away,” said Julia Ragozzino a senior who was one of the four organizers “We wanted to recreate the same type of community spirit for the benefit of our local food pantry.” Leo was a Girard police officer who died in October 2017 after being shot in the line of duty along with seniors Alexis Pieton and Maddy Gassman and junior Brooke Zatvarnicky sat down with their National Honor Society adviser “The color run idea was a way to make running fun,” Alexis said “We had 10 different color stations set up along the way where volunteer students threw powder dust at the runners They all started the race with white T-shirts and ended the race looking quite colorful.” The race began and ended at the high school and navigated through Squaw Creek Estates in between “We are so grateful to the Girard police and fire departments,” Maddy said “They were receptive from the beginning and gave us their blessing They made sure the streets were closed so we could run the race They also donated money to fund the 10 color stations We couldn’t have done this without their cooperation.” The four students also canvassed the community to find other sponsors Mayor Mark Zuppo and police Chief John Norman The girls even solicited Walmart on Belmont Avenue to donate oranges and bananas for all the runners “We really appreciate Knightline Embroidery and Screen Print for giving us a great deal on the T-shirts,” Brooke said “We put our design on the front and listed our sponsors on the back All those white T-shirts didn’t stay white for very long.” Taking first place in the race was Emma Latell She won a Nothing Bundt Cake goodie bag donated by the Niles store who won two free admissions donated by the Past Times Arcade in Girard But the biggest winner was the Emmanuel Community Care Center which received approximately $1,000 from the proceeds of the race This amount far exceeded the girls’ expectations “We’re thrilled to be giving the Emmanuel Center at least $1,000,” Julia said “We had no history to indicate if the idea would even work There were 40 volunteers from the Beta Club and National Honor Society who stepped up to make this event a success.” Those volunteers worked at the stations throwing powder dust and also providing water bottles to thirsty runners two EMT stations were set up by the Girard Fire Department as a precaution The four students took a leadership role in getting through the challenges of conducting the race In addition to securing donations and sponsorships the girls worked with local government authorities to make it all happen “One of the tricky things was making sure the race was 5K (3.1 miles) and not anything more or less,” Alexis said “Our school’s athletics director helped us with that as we charted mileage through Squaw Creek We wanted to avoid church traffic on Sunday so we didn’t use the main roads.” GIRARD — Approximately coach James Keagy said “We’ve been waiting for a game like this to actually hit some balls in the gaps I mean that center fielder and their shortstop are two great players.” with the Indians piling on seven runs across the first two innings “We’ve been trying to get a little bit better each game Whether it was a win or a loss,” Keagy said “They’ve been trying to mature Harding showed flashes throughout the game including highlight reel catches by center fielder Ky’Ziya Minor and shortstop Azarriah Phillips Youthful mistakes led to multiple runs from Girard throughout the contest coach Rick Riley is confident that his team will shed the youthful mistakes and let the talent showcase itself “Once they get past the mental mistakes of being a very young team there’s a lot of talent in there,” Riley said Those two as sophomores are going to lead the team for a long time.” Girard has experimented with the lineup throughout the year tinkering with different players in different spots out in the field That versatility has been a bonus as the tournament approaches “We’ve moved some people around position wise and we’re just trying to have our pitchers pitch and our fielders field and everyone getting better at the plate,” Keagy said “Swinging the bat and trying to level out some balls.” The Indians look to keep things going this afternoon when they face Lakeview Girard (9-7) Hampshire salute as the casket of Concord firefighter Christopher “CJ” is carried into Christ the King Parish in Concord on Thursday CJ Girard packed school lunches during the week and made fresh pancakes on Sundays He played floor hockey with his kids in the basement he’d sit by the woodstove and plug away at a puzzle he was known to start water hose fights and pull pranks on his friends He was as bad at basketball as he was good at being a firefighter As the solemn trill of bagpipes faded into a quiet chorus of sighs and sniffles friends and fellow firefighters celebrated the life and public service of Christopher “CJ” Girard on Thursday She replied with a request to live the way CJ had lived and spend quality moments with your family even when your opinion isn't the popular one Shannon Girard reminded their daughter Camille that she would always have her father’s independent spirit and spunky attitude She reminded their son Greyson that he’d inherited his father’s stride and brown eyes “Being a dad came second nature to him: he was gentle “his swaddle was better than mine,” she quipped ‘What does this badge mean to you?’” Shannon said Sam Cahan worked alongside Girard for his seven years in Concord as committed to his beliefs as to everything and everyone else in his life who eulogized Girard on behalf of his peers “This was one of the beauties in knowing CJ: you never had to guess where you stood on anything Girard had been rambunctious from a young age had been officers at the Church in Berlin where Roberge had spent time in his early years as a priest “I showed up to central [station] with the sole job of learning as much as I could,” said Jeff Kipphut who had been mentored by Girard for the last year “It turns out I wasn’t just learning about fire service but I was learning a lot about how to be a good father a good husband and just a positive role model.”  Girard passed suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Bow on March 1 after a brief illness When Concord Fire Chief John Chisholm got the call Girard was one of the most physically fit members of the department as well as an energetic member of his union and a vocal advocate for ways he thought the department could improve Chisholm said — and would have been a great one The 39-year-old tower operator not only idealized the department’s craft “He set the goal for himself to get on the tower “He didn't do it by pulling strings or by anything political It was just by keeping his nose to grindstone using his own confidence and uplifting other people.” Shannon Girard said her family has been overwhelmed by the support they’ve received from friends and family in and out of fire departments and that it’s a testament to the good neighbor Moving forward from the loss will be heavy and no one else could be quite so bad at “HORSE.”  will mean “staying true to yourself,” he said Catherine McLaughlin can be reached at cmclaughlin@cmonitor.com You can subscribe to her Concord newsletter The school will heavily depict diversity in its brochures Abbott Elementary pokes fun at white institutions using diversity as a marketing tactic when the school tours Girard Creek the new golf course that’s finally reached the end of construction The invitation to the “sneak peek” of the “pre-grand-opening preview” makes the staff skeptical believing it’s probably a ruse for free labor — Mr Johnson suggests they’ll be forced to “pull Michael Jordan out of a golf hole” like the scene in Space Jam — but they accept after finding out there will be free food And not just any food; Girard Creek provides a smorgasbord of gourmet offerings It’s a nightmare dining situation for an extremely picky eater like Gregory so Barbara uses it as an opportunity for exposure therapy to prepare Gregory for a date with Janine at a French restaurant As the staff and students file into the facility Janine tries her hardest to stay on the defense in case “there’s a Get Out situation.” Miles the lawyer who serves as the liaison between the course and Abbott pointing out the gracious views of what used to be the ancestral land of the Lenape people whom they “hope are doing very well.” Everything is top of the line and there’s even a framed picture of Charlie Sifford the first Black man to play on the PGA Tour This photograph should have been the first hint that there might be an ulterior motive to Abbott’s appearance at the course (Miles saying they love celebrating the “rich and diverse history of the game” is code for “I know we have a race problem”) but Janine is temporarily distracted by the impeccably delicious Arnold Palmers Despite polishing off glass after glass of the iconic beverage — she ends up drinking 17 throughout the episode — Janine remains dubious of Miles’s intentions Gregory is also preoccupied with the course’s refreshments as Barbara forces him to confront his limited diet Gregory’s picky eating has been a long-running gag on the show but when Erica bails on a hard-to-get reservation Barbara encourages Gregory to fill in so Janine doesn’t have to cancel He’s hesitant as all the food is either “dusted and crusted or not to be trusted,” but Barbara assures him that sharing an intimate meal is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship especially when dating someone who enjoys eating as much as Janine But when she sees how aggressively Gregory responds to a waiter offering ahi tuna (his exact words are “f- - - no!”) she sees how unprepared he is for a true fine-dining experience She challenges Gregory to accept whatever is on the tray the next time a waiter circulates their way paralyzed by his “options,” and when the next waiter offers him a sea urchin proclaiming that he’s a “freak.” Barbara finds him hiding from all the exotic food and hands him what he believes is a serving of plain buttered noodles there’s a helping of truffle shaved atop his meal When Barbara points out that she just got him to eat a food he insisted he disliked despite never trying he finally feels ready to tackle the restaurant Meanwhile, Ava and Melissa are willingly indulging in the truffles Girard Creek flew out specifically for the grand opening when it dawns on them how strange it is for the course to have an abundance of such a rare mushroom. These particular truffles only grow during certain parts of the year in Alba and must be foraged by “special pigs.” Ava Melissa facetiously remarks that there are so many truffles that the course might not even realize if they go missing sparking an idea in the two people at Abbott with the highest level of street smarts Ava distracts the room by loudly announcing that she’s about to do a complicated acrobatic sequence of back flips and roundoffs then abruptly retracts her statements after Melissa successfully steals as many truffles as she can Janine’s skepticism is validated after she and Jacob witness Miles channeling his inner reality-TV producer and coaching a student to sing the course’s praises in front of a camera Miles dismisses filming a minor as “getting some feedback,” but Janine and Jacob know something is up and start to ask their students what’s going on reminding them they don’t have to lie about liking golf for the camera the students truly seem to be enjoying themselves particularly RJ — Jacob still hasn’t found an activity that will inspire him to become more engaged smiling bigger than we’ve seen before as he plays with the virtual golf simulation But when Miles assembles the school for a group picture sending all the white staff and students (or should I say singular student) to the back of the shot before summoning a three-legged dog to pose with them Miles responds to RJ’s question about getting more involved by encouraging him to return when he’s old enough … to be a caddy Just like the false promises of the infamous diversity-centered college brochures the unspoken is clear: Black faces are beneficial for publicity but not for true inclusion One thing about Abbott Elementary both onscreen and off is that the show doesn’t play about depicting the students as autonomous children with full lives They let Black kids exist in all their glory without turning them into a statistic or a cautionary tale While a lot of this is usually done with care and intention in the writers’ room this episode presents how the characters within the show’s universe react to the students being treated like a charity case Once Ava sees the course’s Instagram post of the group picture with the hashtags #Black Lives Matter and #Charity Day they go into beast mode to stand up for their kids Janine and Jacob confront Miles about misrepresenting why he invited the school to tour the facility saying it’s “par for the course” since Abbott blackmailed him first With Miles clearly not rolling over easily Janine and Jacob enlist in the other teachers to avenge their students and Janine (with another Arnold Palmer in hand) storm into Miles’s office demanding a free club for Abbott students to learn golf thinking the accompanying tax break would be a great incentive refusing to do any more favors for the school so Janine calls in Gregory to beat his ass (I loved the callback to the fight episode) but Melissa uses the stolen truffles as leverage with Gregory threatening to eat every mushroom Gregory scarfs one down like a rabid animal aggressively demands to know what’s inside the drinks and the teachers return to school with RJ ecstatic about his new extracurricular activity Janine and Gregory keep the reservation and Gregory does his best to play the role of dedicated foodie even hilariously praising the “blood” complementing his braised lamb but she ends up being the first to tap out hopefully on their way to get something a bit more appetizing • It was uncharacteristic of Jacob not to pat himself on the back for solving a student’s problem. Instead, it seemed to only deepen his anxiety. I hope they expand on this as teachers are nearly twice as likely to experience difficulty coping with job-related stress than other adult workers The student who wants to join the golf club: “I’m trying to get like you This entire exchange with Ava and Melissa proves we desperately need more scenes of them queening out:Ava: “You be the oceans I’ll be the eleven?”Melissa: “Catch me if you can to New York in return for Jill Saulnier The PWHL announced today the Boston Fleet have traded forward Taylor Girard to the New York Sirens in exchange for forward Jill Saulnier.  has appeared in five games for the Fleet this season and tallied no points she recorded the lowest time on ice of any Fleet skater She has been a healthy scratch for the other five games Girard played in 23 games and tallied four goals and two assists “Adding Taylor to our roster brings not only a teammate who aligns perfectly with our organization’s values but also a player whose physicality and disciplined approach to her role make her a valuable asset in a league where every inch of the ice is a hard-fought battle,” Sirens General Manager Pascal Daoust said in the press release “Every good trade should bring something positive for all parties involved whose leadership and passion for the game truly set her apart!”  has appeared in five games for the Sirens this season and recorded no points She was injured in their season opener on December 1 and missed four games before returning to the lineup on December 29 She has also been a healthy scratch once this season Saulnier struggled with injuries while appearing in 18 games and tallying one goal and one assist “We’re thrilled to welcome Jill Saulnier to the Boston Fleet,” Fleet General Manager Danielle Marmer said in a press release “Jill has achieved so much in her hockey career and she brings a level of competitiveness and grit that will elevate our team on the ice Jill’s experience and leadership will be invaluable in our locker room it’s never easy to part ways with a player who has been with us since our inaugural draft Taylor has been an integral part of our team and we’ll miss her both on and off the ice We wish her nothing but the best as she continues her career in New York.”  perhaps a change of scenery will be good for Girard and Saulnier and they’ll make more of an impact with their new clubs Girard is a former first-overall pick in the PHF and produced at over a point-per-game pace in her two seasons in the league but she has struggled with the pace of the PWHL It's unlikely that changes a ton since speed has never been the highlight of her game she's a gritty player and if Sirens head coach Greg Fargo deploys her a bit differently than Boston did (say with some faster players that she can dish the puck to or vice versa) perhaps she will regain some of that PHF offense she’s a good leader and reliable depth player who represented Canada at four World Championships and two Olympics while playing in the CWHL and PWHPA Boston head coach Courtney Kessel covets physicality and tends to trust veteran depth players with more minutes than younger ones so perhaps spreading the forward minutes out more might help the Fleet get into a better groove offensively I'd give New York a slight edge since Girard is six years younger than Saulnier although I'm not sure she'll reach it in the PWHL unless something drastically changes This isn't a Walter Cup-winning move for either team nor will it doom them to the Gold Plan Girard is expected to debut for the Sirens on Saturday January 25 when the team travels to Toronto to take on the Sceptres at Scotiabank Arena at 2 p.m Saulnier will make her Fleet debut on Wednesday January 22 when they take on the Toronto Sceptres at home at 7 p.m How To The initial call indicated that a suspect, identified as Lorne M Crowder had fired a rifle at a neighbor’s house and fled in a vehicle It was the start of an ongoing incident between Crowder’s family that started early in the afternoon a male voice was heard saying he had fired a shot at a relative’s house I’m going to die,” and he was armed with a .308 rifle his intent was apparently to shoot as many officers as possible officers established a perimeter around the residence to contain the area and avoid innocent vehicle traffic reported seeing Crowder under a pickup truck in the driveway The Air 1 crew and witnesses said they saw Crowder actually fire his rifle The criminal complaint says a neighbor’s vehicle was struck by gun fire The bullet impact was located on the passenger front end of the vehicle A rifle was observed on the passenger’s rear seat of the vehicle and at least one casing was recovered from the scene along with live ammunition matching the caliber mentioned The situation was rapidly evolving into a critical incident and SWAT officers were dispatched to the scene Crowder was observed removing a screen and entering a residence through a window APD Tactical units rushed to the house and made entry and took Crowder into custody who explained that the situation began earlier in the day when a dispute arose over a financial matter involving her husband and one of their fathers The disagreement led to concerning statements from her husband Crowder was booked into MDC and charged with Shooting at or from a motor vehicle (no great bodily harm) and Negligent use of a deadly weapon (discharge) It is unknown if additional charges like shooting at a dwelling could be added While police were investigating the armed psycho scene, a drunk driver identified as Raegan Delane White who had been operating a Honda sedan with a Texas license plate The APD officer observed signs of alcohol impairment including the odor of alcohol and bloodshot When police asked her how much alcohol she had consumed White replied that she had three margaritas The criminal complaint states “Raegan was unaware she struck and pinned a police officer between her vehicle and another motor vehicle prior to fleeing the scene of the accident.“ White agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests The officer explained and demonstrated each test before White attempted them The complaint claims White stated she understood the instructions but performed poorly on all of the tests The officer subsequently took her into custody which resulted in readings at or above twice the legal limit White was charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of an Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drug The APD officer who was struck was taken to the University of New of their day would be like in 1784,” he said.    “The idea was to make the past ‘come alive’ with 24 short stories on the daily life of an executioner I thought the talk could involve some images sounds and live readings by McNeese students of two to three selected chapters,” he added.  Girard selected four students to record all the chapters for the audiobook – Jaspin Vaughn Juliet Riviere and Oluseun Olagbaju – and two to three of these students will do the live readings of selected characters – the opera diva Mrs the hunter Milscent and the old pirate.  a native of Guadeloupe in the
