As we finally find ourselves in the best part of the growing season for Glenside
let’s look at something that can make your head spin: choosing plants at the garden center
When you walk into Primex or whatever garden center is your favorite destination
it’s like stepping into a candy store—but instead of sweets
you’re faced with an array of plants to pick from
Do you go for the tried-and-true favorites or take a chance on something exotic
The Best Approach: Stop and Take a Deep Breath
To keep the excitement from turning into anxiety
here’s a step-by-step approach to tackle that garden center visit like a pro:
take a moment to think about which part of your garden you want to focus on for this visit
Remember you can make as many visits as you wish
this won’t be the last time you’re in a plant store in 2025
We all have limited budgets and car space so the clearer you are on what you need for this trip
and where it will go helps you to focus your selection.
Knowing which plants are best suited for your space will narrow down your options and boost your confidence. But most importantly what plants do you want to see in your garden when you look out your window
write down a few plants you’re excited about and try to stick to it
you won’t feel as overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices
Your list can also help you stay focused and avoid impulse buys that might end up being more trouble than they’re worth
do you want to dig them up at the end of the growing season every year
Don’t hesitate to chat with the garden center staff
They’re often a treasure trove of information and can guide you toward plants that suit your needs
If you’re unsure about care requirements or companion planting
If you’re new to gardening or trying a different type of plant
consider starting with just a few varieties
You can always expand later as you gain experience and confidence

One could say that Glenside sits at the end of the other Main Line — that is to say
the former Reading Railroad main line into Philly’s northern burbs
Because two SEPTA Regional Rail lines stop there
Glensiders enjoy more frequent service to Center City
But it’s also a short distance to Route 309
which means that getting to King of Prussia via the Turnpike is just as convenient
Glenside offers reasonably priced housing in a community with plenty of walkability and great recreational facilities
Head north on Easton Road, and you’ll run into Keswick Village, a charming Tudor-style shopping district — Glenside’s other downtown. Here you’ll find eateries serving everything from pub fare (Rooster’s) to dumplings and noodles (Humpty’s Dumplings)
But the best-known Keswick Village business is the Keswick Theatre
one of the region’s premier performing-arts venues
designed by Horace Trumbauer and opened in 1928
has hosted performers from Lionel Hampton to Philly rock band the Hooters

Cheltenham Township officials will consider the proposed creation of an Active Transportation Committee during Wednesday’s public works committee meeting on Wednesday
the citizens committee would focus on pedestrian
“The Active Transportation Committee is being formed at the request of Commissioner Jeff Chirico to facilitate the planning
and promotion of active transportation infrastructure
sidewalks and other pathways in Cheltenham Township,” the agenda says
“Some of you may know that one of my main goals when running for township commissioner was to work to create a more pedestrian and bicyclist-friendly municipality
I proposed the formation of this committee last summer as the first step in that goal,” Chirico said in a Facebook post
“The committee will be made up of township staff and township residents and advised by outside organizations with particular focus on these issues.”
a Wyncote resident and former Environmental Advisory Council member
said he would like the township “to focus on people
“Our vision is for the committee to operate in close alignment with both the Environmental Advisory Council (Residents for a Sustainable Cheltenham) and the Traffic Calming Committee
reporting directly to the Board of Commissioners through the Public Works Committee,” Raisch said in a post
Consistent with the goals of the Cheltenham Township Comprehensive Plan and Sustainability Plan
the citizens advisory committee to be known as the “Cheltenham Township Active Transportation Committee” (Active Transportation Committee)
is hereby established for the purpose of providing advice and guidance to the Township in relation to the comprehensive development
improvements and maintenance of the network of trails and sidewalks throughout Cheltenham Township that are predominantly off-street facilities
parallel or share street right-of-way for limited lengths and may connect to existing and future trails and sidewalks within Cheltenham Township and in neighboring communities in order to make the Township a safer community for active transportation
The Cheltenham Township Board of Commissioners shall be the primary authority for trail and sidewalk development
but the Active Transportation Committee shall assist with coordination amongst various Township and related outside agencies with matters related to trails and sidewalks in order to coordinate a fully integrated trail and sidewalk network
The proposal will be up for a final vote on Wednesday
The full ordinance can be found on page 57 below:
The public works meeting will also consider recommending that the Board of Commissioners adopt a resolution granting conditional approval and associated waivers for a preliminary land development application for Glenside Elementary School’s three building additions
nine additional parking spaces, improvements to three subsurface stormwater facilities
and the relocation of both a play area and anemergency access driveway
The township received plans for the changes on February 21

After nearly 40 years running Pizza Box in Glenside
owner Angelo Genova has decided to hand over his apron
and his pizza peel in exchange for some much-needed free time
Genova (who bears no immediate relation to the author)
He still jumps in every so often when management is in a pinch
“I still want to keep in touch with my customers,” he said
“The best part of my 39 years has been dealing with the clientele to the point that we’re not customers and owners anymore
The change of pace has been well earned: In the 1980s
the Quakertown resident said he once went six months without a day off “just to keep it going.” He said he’s enjoyed getting to know different generations as the decades rolled by
“The son starts coming to pick up the pizza when the father retires
This place became a landmark to the point that it wasn’t easy for me to retire,” Genova said
I want to enjoy my grandkids and I didn’t want my wife to throw me out of the house
She wants to travel and enjoy life also.”
He’s also overseen various structural changes
which opened in 1973 and is now the site of the Wawa on Limekiln Pike
“They bought the whole strip and we had to change
It used to be a hardware store,” Genova said
he purchased what is now the Moonlight Diner and opened an Italian restaurant called La Caseta
the popular pizzeria spans three locations: Pizza Box Ambler launched in 2016
and Pizza Box Telford—owned and managed by Genova’s son
has taken over Pizza Box Glenside and Pizza Box Ambler full-time
The Glenside eatery is co-owned by Musso’s father-in-law and cousin
Genova pops in periodically to give him paternal leave
recently celebrated his 10th anniversary as a member of the Pizza Box family
He started as a dishwasher—his first job in the U.S.—on April 23
I worked in Glenside and then at Ambler for two years
When he thought I was ready to manage Ambler
I bought it with my father-in-law,” Musso said
at which point Musso “convinced him to leave me his place in Glenside
that’s why we have three owners.”
“My goal is to bring this place to the top
It’s already famous but I want to improve that even more
We have a lot of potential,” he said
“Pizza Box is a really different style
I visit a lot of pizza shops and nobody does the job that we do
so I still have a lot of contacts with owners back home
That’s what makes it Pizza Box.”
A painting from a thrift store in Glenside is by William H
of Philadelphia’s elite Black society circa 1864
In the summer of 2023 he spied the edge of a frame stored on a shelf with the image facing sideways
the bucolic picture of a small Black figure fishing next to a church and dilapidated mill piqued his interest
I like the little guy that was sitting there fishing on the side of the river,” he said
“The tree right next to him was done in these very light brushstrokes that I thought was beautiful.”
just enough to make me want to take it away from the store,” Robbins said
The name Dorsey is well known to Quinones, who has written about William’s father, Thomas Dorsey
He escaped slavery in Maryland with his two brothers in 1836
They came through the Underground Railroad network and landed in Philadelphia
where Thomas started a successful catering business
An 1896 Philadelphia Times article said the elder Dorsey could “rule the social world through its stomach” and had “the sway of an imperial dictator,” making him a very wealthy man
his children inherited a life of financial comfort
His son William was able to devote much of his energies to art
William Dorsey co-founded the American Negro Historical Society, which tracked, collected and archived Black history. Among the activities that ANHS followed was baseball, recording game stats of the Philadelphia Pythians, the team co-founded and led by Octavius Catto until his assassination in 1871
Those records are now kept at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania
turning two rooms of his house on Dean Street
into a museum of African American history and art
was two blocks from where the Historical Society of Pennsylvania now sits
“The fact that he was collecting work by Black and white artists speaks to the wealth his family had accumulated,” Brigham said
“To be able to buy paintings by prominent artists was not available to most people
The fact that he was filling his home with beautiful things and inviting people to come and see them speaks volumes.”
Dorsey exhibited 11 paintings at PAFA in 1867 and 1868
one of which was titled “The Fisherman,” according to records at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
It is possible that painting is the one discovered at New Life Thrift
the maritime museum accidentally bought an 1815 portrait
Her story can now be told at the historic Biddle family estate
Once Robbins realized he had stumbled onto something of value
he was advised to seek out an appraisal to determine an insurance value
But he never investigated how much the Dorsey paintings might be worth
He reached out to a few museums to test the waters but ultimately took the advice of Quinones and gave it to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania
“She thought that it would be a really good place for it to be,” Robbins said. “They have been focusing their acquisitions on this era of Black Philadelphia. Before I found this painting, I knew nothing about it whatsoever. It really opened my eyes to a whole piece of history that I wouldn’t have thought about before.”
Dorsey painting is on view as part of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s current exhibition of new acquisitions

Rooster’s, located at 294 N Keswick Avenue in Glenside, was featured today by Philadelphia Magazine in an article titled “Rooster’s Brings New Life to the Old Keswick Tavern“
The article describes a brief history of the location (the former Keswick Tavern)
But Rooster’s isn’t a sports bar. Not really. Not any more than it is an English pub (even though it serves a decent shepherd’s pie) or a cocktail bar (even though they make their own ginger soda for the Dark & Stormy and sling dirty freezer martinis with blue-cheese-stuffed olives). It is, from the bones out, a Stove & Co. restaurant
which means that it isn’t any one thing entirely but is actually everything
which has long been Stove & Co.’s best trick for attracting fans.Rooster’s was fun

There are no obstructed views and every seat is a great seat
You will never watch magic in better conditions.
“It is the most prominent center for magic on the East Coast,” Martin said
“This theater is going to outshine every magic theater out there
We are going to be able to present magic like you see on the biggest stages in Las Vegas to the tiniest magic.”
“This place will be the mecca for anyone in the 100-mile radius,” Archer said
“It will be the premier place for magicians and for people in the arts.”
Outside theater groups are welcome to rent either theater to present their own shows as well

There will also be educational programs for the lay public to enrich their appreciation of magic too
“We want to create a magic-savvy community,” he said
Martin wants to dispel the misconception that magic shows are just for kids
While the House of Magic and the Smoke & Mirrors Theater do offer family shows
they also offer magic shows at a high level of sophistication
They exemplify “a caliber of magician who is the difference between somebody who can hit some keys on a piano and Liberace.”
The House of Magic is the premier venue for the performance and preservation of magic on the East Coast. It is housed in a nearly 100-year-old building
The Glenside National Bank/Glenside Title and Trust Company took occupancy of this structure
designed and constructed by the Tilghman-Moyer Company
the building houses three other office spaces within this 12,000-plus-square-foot structure
with the House of Magic occupying the remainder
Creator Marc DeSouza has thoroughly re-imagined and reconstructed this building to create this homage to the history and appreciation of the art of magic
SEPTA’s plans to replace the bridge over N
Easton Road in Glenside this spring may be delayed following negotiations between local business owners and SEPTA officials
Current plans call for the replacement to begin in March and span roughly 5-6 weeks
The project would shut down Easton Road between Mount Carmel Avenue and Glenside Avenue
Cheltenham Commissioner Matt Areman asked SEPTA if the bridge’s mural will be preserved and was assured that the artists will be contacted
Cheltenham Township’s public information officer
said that the project’s timeline and detours were discussed again at Public Works meetings in December and January
According to the traffic control map below
owner of The Ways Restaurant & Brewery which borders the railway and part of the bridge
told Glenside Local that he was contacted by Bob Kent
owner of The Royal Music & Arts Center two doors up the road
Kent and SEPTA’s project team today to request a delay until this summer
“April and May is our busiest time of year
People want to sit outside and enjoy the weather,” Way said
“No one wants to sit next to a construction zone
They’re also closing the road at the intersection
and I haven’t gotten any full reassurances that the driveway is going to stay open.”
Kent told him in that conversation that the timeframe was set in stone and that the project could take as long as eight weeks
I’m hoping they push it back two months and work through the summer,” Way said
“I let him know it would have been nice to include us in the planning.”
Easton Road and Fairhill Avenue to see if the school had been notified about the project
Their front office said they had not heard about it
“Nobody’s really communicated with us
It’s going to be a problem,” Gordon said
“To do this in April or May is a bad time for businesses
That’s when people are out and about.”
Gordon reached out to multiple business owners in the area to request a delay
“They do hear us and they want to work with us,” she said
Carmel and Paxson for roughly 12 days and would take place around Memorial Day weekend
Both projects are part of SEPTA’s Bridges Rehabilitation Project
We will be in touch with updates as they are available
Glenside Fresh Start
a grassroots information and awareness organization
has joined the conversation regarding the future of the 105-year-old
32-acre SPS Technologies property in Jenkintown
The site launched on April 5. Eight days later, a Change.org petition titled “PREVENT Rebuilding of SPS Technologies in Abington
PA” began making its way through social media groups in greater Glenside
the petition’s author—as well as Glenside Fresh Start’s founder—has been mostly anonymous
a Glenside resident of 23 years (and a Jenkintown resident for five years prior)
says she is the source of both information outlets
with help from roughly 41 additional residents and members of the organization
She says she sees the disaster as an opportunity to make the surrounding area a better place to live
I wanted to know why we’d bother rebuilding something that was blatantly bad for our environment,” she said
“Now we have the opportunity to put something there that could help create a better community than we already are.”
Potential ideas for the 301 Highland Avenue location include a mixed-use with commercial and green space
or “anything other than a factory for the people who live here,” Keyser said

Marc DeSouza began his journey into magic at 6 years old
Starting with the classic ball and vase trick
he quickly picked up the art of illusion and happily performed for his friends and family
Over the following years DeSouza continued to develop his skills
gathering more tools of the trade and learning from the experienced magicians he met during his frequent visits to the local magic shop
I was doing two or three shows every weekend,” said DeSouza
who’s since performed on stages all around the world
including two television appearances on CW’s “Penn and Teller: Fool Us.”

Now he’s taking his lifetime of magic experience, along with 60 years in real estate development, to create the House of Magic
a venue dedicated to the performance and preservation of magic
Set to open Friday in the former PNC Bank building along Easton Road in Glenside
House of Magic features a 103-seat jewel-box theater
a close-up 25-seat mini theater and a 4,500-square-foot magic museum and library to showcase the past 200 years of magic through a vast collection of artifacts
“I wanted something that was distinctively different from just the magic theater
I wanted a place where it was an homage to the art of magic,” DeSouza said
House of Magic has partnered with Smoke & Mirrors Theater
to produce shows featuring performers specializing in magic
Archer said moving to Glenside from their former Huntingdon Valley location where Smoke & Mirrors opened eight years ago will enhance the overall show experience thanks to the venue’s larger stage and additional seating
Magicians from around the world will be travelling here to check out the space
In addition to its two theaters and museum
House of Magic also features a VIP lounge with a secret entrance
event rental spaces and a magician’s study with a hidden bookcase door
Another feature in the works incorporates the bank’s original vault and 2,000 safety deposit boxes to create the “Vault of Secrets,” which DeSouza said will be integrated into some of the performances
House of Magic is also to offer educational opportunities for magicians and for those who are simply curious about the art through kids and adult classes
training spaces and open mic-style events to help performers work out new material

Step into Rooster’s — the new Stove & Co
restaurant that opened in the former home of the beloved Keswick Tavern — and the first thing you notice is the TV
It’s so big that when the brightness of whatever’s on screen changes
the light levels in the bar change with it
they had that big TV tuned to a Premier League game
men in red and men in white playing on a field so green you almost felt like you could jump right through the screen and roll around on it
But Rooster’s isn’t a sports bar. Not really. Not any more than it is an English pub (even though it serves a decent shepherd’s pie) or a cocktail bar (even though they make their own ginger soda for the Dark & Stormy and sling dirty freezer martinis with blue-cheese-stuffed olives). It is, from the bones out, a Stove & Co. restaurant
which means that it isn’t any one thing entirely but is actually everything
which has long been Stove & Co.’s best trick for attracting fans

Order This: Fried cheese curds and beer will never besomething you regret
So the kitchen does deviled eggs and baked clams; deep-fried cheese curds in a lacy

While the broadcast switched to a sunny spring training game in Florida
I ate shrimp and round slices of andouille sausage over smooth and creamy grits
topped with a spicy hash of shredded and chile-fried Brussels sprouts that added little to the plate but texture and a sense that this was something more than just shrimp and grits

The Glenside Celtic Soccer Club is expanding a little more each year
the organization was initially an arm of the Glenside Gaelic Club
Logistics and internal rules led the trio to form a separate nonprofit to promote and preserve Irish culture in greater Glenside with an aim to replicate the strong Glenside community as part of the club
“This a genuinely community-based club,” Gallagher
“A lot of the new clubs are actually for-profit corporations with a Philly branch
Gallagher noted that the first year in operation was “a little tricky.”
“We were shipping players from one game to another to serve as substitutes
We’d arrange the schedule so the games didn’t overlap,” he said
“We had a successful start and it’s grown organically from there
We had some really good players who happened to be Gaelic players.”
the organization runs a summer camp about Irish culture and sport at their home fields in Temple Ambler
“It’s easy to find that crossover
We wanted our kids to participate in Irish-American life
That’s why we founded the club,” Gallagher said
“Teams are named after Irish counties
so the kids are learning geography without realizing it.”
it welcomes players and families from all cultures and backgrounds within the immediate area
respectful and structured environment to teach kids the sport and to learn about competition and being part of a community
The club also runs an in-house feeder program called Wee Kick Abouts for four- to seven-year-olds
The in-house program plays intramural games and matriculate to the travel teams
said they fielded 275 players across 16 travel teams—ranging from U8 to U14—last year
“Most of our teams have two within their age group
We’ve been through the growth of it all,” she said
Gallagher’s stepson was on the original team
“That team didn’t lose a game for two seasons
and they were super successful,” he said
“They won national championships in Gaelic
and we credit that to getting them to play year-round
Keeping the same core group of kids around each other all year has allowed those championships
Each team’s gear comes from a sporting goods outfit in Ireland called O’Neills
It’s really lovely for the families on the sidelines to support their kids
There’s fun conversation and they’re part of something that’s more than a sporting event,” Molly said
“We have uniforms and gear that kids and parents want to wear
Jerzee’s Pizzeria & Sports Bar has served as an unofficial clubhouse and a significant sponsor
along with other local places of business including the Glenside Pub and Rooster’s
and I think people see that and see the larger community aspect,” Gallagher said
and we put 32 shamrocks for 32 counties in Ireland
The vertical bars represent 2013 when the Gaelic club was founded.”
“If you look at every major city around the world
they always have at least two soccer clubs
It’s that rivalry that boosts the sports and the sense of community
We’re hoping to create those rivalries with clubs in our area,” he said
“It adds passion to the community and the clubs
and it helps the soccer community in greater Glenside
We hope to build on those friendly rivalries going forward.”
