The Lyndon House Arts Center is celebrating local artists with the display of its 50th Juried Exhibition
The exhibition is free to the public and features 151 works of over 100 artists from the Athens area
aiming to highlight the creativity of the local community
this year’s Juried Exhibition was juried by Michael Rooks
Wieland Family Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum in Atlanta
Rooks advocates for showcasing local artists and plays a prominent role in the art community
Rooks evaluated 835 artworks by 307 regional artists whose identities were kept confidential to ensure fairness in the selection process
“To have someone of his caliber who knows the work that’s being made regionally added greater weight to his selections,” Kathryn Refi
the program specialist at the LHAC and curator of this year’s show
The exhibition includes many media types in a cohesive flow arranged by Refi—some of them being paintings
but most of them being paintings and drawings representing local talent and creative energy from the Athens art community
“The event and the show provides a wonderful opportunity for people to come together
see new faces and really celebrate what’s happening here locally,” Refi said
Rooks announced the many cash prizes provided by various local art guilds to artists
ranging from $100 to $300 and awarding both merit and the use of different mediums and messages
The LHAC also awarded one of the artists the Arts Center Choice Award
This year’s award winner was Shawn Ireland’s “A Night Table,” using oil on canvas
Ireland will receive a solo exhibit in one of the LHAC galleries for the fall
“I was realizing that every artist has personal meaning in each of these pieces
I found that very inspiring,” Kelsey Wishnik
also said they were “really detailed pieces
so I’ve been pulled into each one of them.”
The LHAC will host a Juried Exhibition Artist Talk on at 5:30 p.m
offering those interested an opportunity to hear more from the exhibit’s selected artists about their work and inspirations behind some of their pieces

President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s life came full circle when he was laid to rest in the Johnson Family Cemetery on January 25
few people--let alone prominent world leaders--have so many of their lives' significant moments occurring in one place
The cemetery is just a stone’s throw from the birthsite of Lyndon Johnson
and just down the road from the Texas White House
where our 36th President lived for over two decades
President Johnson expressed his love for the Hill Country of Texas
Most of the people buried in the cemetery are related to Lyndon Johnson
and her family was unable to cross the flooding river to lay her next to her husband in the Stonewall Community Cemetery
The family chose a grove of live oak trees on property belonging to Lyndon Johnson’s grandfather for Mrs
Her gravestone is the white Georgia marble marker with the lamb on top
Sam Johnson had been a state legislator who was much admired for procuring pensions for Civil War veterans and securing passage of legislation to improve Hill Country roads
and a large crowd came to pay their respects to him
Lyndon Johnson had just recently been elected as a U.S
so the funeral was attended by the Governor of Texas and other important dignitaries
The wall was constructed to give identity to the cemetery
as well as to minimize the harmful effects of Pedernales River flooding
Repairs were made on the wall after major floods in 1952 and 1959
President Johnson’s body lay in state at the LBJ Library in Austin
and then in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington
President Johnson’s funeral at the LBJ Ranch took place on the cold and rainy day of January 25
"When I die I don’t just want our friends who can come in their private planes
I want the men in their pickup trucks and the women whose slips hang down below their dresses to be welcome
too...." Hundreds of people attended the funeral
which was conducted by Reverend Billy Graham
The most prominent gravestone in the cemetery is the gray one with the Martin name on it
Frank and Clarence Martin were President Johnson’s aunt and uncle
The President bought the ranch from Frank Martin in 1951

The remaining headstones belong to the President’s brother

Lyndon Johnson returned home from Austin to seek the advice of his father - should he run for Congress
when Lyndon Johnson stood on the porch of his boyhood home to announce his candidacy for the U.S
House of Representatives for the Tenth District of the State of Texas
So began a career in public service that spanned more than three decades
culminated in the presidency of the United States
and ushered in landmark legislation such as Medicare
and forty-three national park authorizations or additions
As a boy he learned the value of education
and his administration passed more than sixty education bills - a fitting tribute to his mother
He didn't forget where he came from and worked hard to provide electricity throughout the rural counties that surround Johnson City
All his accomplishments have earned him a respect that is still alive today in the Texas Hill Country

readers of the Orlando Sentinel woke up to a historic headline: “Welcome to Central Florida
President.” The occasion of President Lyndon Johnson’s visit to Orlando marked the first time that a U.S
president had spent a night in this city while in office and the first visit by a sitting president since Harry Truman in 1949
Johnson – who became the nation’s 36th president on Nov
Kennedy – had previously campaigned in Orlando on Oct
Johnson had hoped that an appearance in Central Florida would swing the state into the Democratic column
The Kennedy-Johnson ticket had fallen short in 1960 by 3.02 percent
and in Orange County a whopping 70.98 percent of the vote went to Richard Nixon
Could 1964 finally be the year Florida turned blue for the first time since 1948
The State Democratic Committee of Florida urged votes for Johnson in an Orlando Sentinel ad on Oct
The president certainly had an ardent supporter in Orlando Sentinel publisher Martin Andersen
one of the most influential voices in Central Florida and a close friend of Johnson’s from Andersen’s days in Texas
the Sentinel boldly endorsed the 46-year-old Johnson for the Democratic nomination for president despite the “moderately severe” heart attack he had suffered just a day prior
Though Adlai Stevenson II of Illinois would eventually earn the 1956 nomination
the Sentinel again endorsed Johnson in 1960 during his primary fight against John F
Johnson had long enjoyed popularity among Democrats in Florida
his friend Andersen had a direct line to the most powerful man in the world
Andersen’s influence with the president played no small part
in the establishment of the Naval Training Center in 1968
following the closure of the Orlando Air Force Base in late 1967
Their friendship certainly extended to the Sentinel’s coverage of the 1964 presidential campaign
in which the paper came out strongly in favor of Johnson and proved critical of Republican nominee Sen
a vocal opponent of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
All this took place at a time when Johnson’s selection of the liberal senator Hubert H
Humphrey of Minnesota and the passage of the Civil Rights Act made Johnson unpopular among many southern voters of both parties
alongside friend and Orlando Sentinel publisher Martin Andersen (right front)
works the reception line upon his arrival in Orlando on the night of Oct
Johnson recognized the importance of Orlando in Florida’s growth and chose the city as the site of a major campaign stop
and Central Florida residents rewarded Johnson with their warm reception
The president arrived from Miami via Air Force One at the McCoy Civilian Jet Terminal just after 9:30 p.m
An estimated crowd of nearly 8,000 gave Johnson an enthusiastic welcome
while the Winter Park High School band serenaded him with “Hail to the Chief” and a rendition of his “Hello
Johnson was accompanied in his limousine by Florida Gov
Upon the motorcade’s arrival at the Cherry Plaza Hotel on Lake Eola
the president shook hands with well-wishers for 23 minutes and even climbed onto the hood of a police cruiser to tell the assembled how much he loved being in Orlando
Johnson embarked on a motorcade to the Colonial Plaza Shopping Center
Given President Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas just 11 months prior
providing a secure motorcade for the president was top priority for Orlando officials
Windows on the upper floors of buildings along the route were to remain closed
and people were forbidden from assembling on rooftops for a better view
with only a smattering of pro-Goldwater signage
and Jean Yothers of the Sentinel took special note of the youngest among the crowds
writing that “Central Florida children greeted the tall Texan as if he were Santa Claus.”
The newspaper called Johnson’s visit the most “overwhelming turnout for any event in the history of Orlando,” with approximately 110,000 Central Floridians coming out to see the president
including 50,000 in the shopping center parking lot alone for his speech
From a platform just south of Belk’s department store
After that warm and friendly welcome last night
and your wonderful hospitality this morning
I am quite ready to accept Orlando citizenship.”
Johnson delivered his campaign stump speech
as well as two references to Martin Andersen
Johnson took a jab at the Goldwater campaign’s “In Your Heart You Know He’s Right” slogan by saying
and that you know will do what is best for his country.”
President Johnson’s motorcade travels north on Orlando’s Orange Avenue
passing the headquarters of the Orlando Sentinel
did Johnson’s visit to Central Florida pay off on Election Day
Orange County – which The Corner Cupboard newspaper described as “one of the most Republican areas in the country” at the time – went solidly for Goldwater on Nov
with the Republican nominee earning 56.10 percent of the vote
Republican candidates for president would go on to win in Orange County for the next eight elections
(Changing demographics in the county over the last two decades
producing Democratic victories in every presidential election since 2000.)
Johnson did wind up carrying the state of Florida by 2.30 percent of the vote in 1964
in the process earning the state’s 14 electoral votes
In only one other state – Idaho – was the vote quite so close for Johnson
who won the election over Goldwater in a massive landslide
with 61.1 percent of the popular vote and 486 electoral votes
the Democratic National Committee’s regional campaign director in the south
credited Andersen’s endorsement of Johnson as a major factor in Florida going Democratic for the first time since 1948
“There is ample reason to believe,” he said
“that without the editorial endorsement of the Sentinel and the newspaper’s subsequent promotion of the president’s appearance in Orlando near the end of the campaign
the Democrats might have lost Florida for the fourth consecutive time in a presidential election.”

Perhaps its cool reception can be traced to its slow
its meticulously crafted but emotionally restrained storytelling
a film that would reshape Hollywood forever
not only as one of Kubrick’s most visually striking films but also as an intensely personal project that offers rare insight into the director himself
The film follows the rise and fall of Redmond Barry
an ambitious Irishman who reinvents himself as Barry Lyndon in his pursuit of wealth and status
After fleeing his homeland following a duel
Barry navigates the treacherous world of 18th-century Europe
a gambler and ultimately marries into aristocracy
his social ascent is marred by personal missteps
betrayals and the cold realities of high society
Kubrick had spent years preparing for a grand epic about Napoleon
amassing an enormous archive of research and developing meticulous pre-production plans
But no studio was willing to finance the project. Unwilling to abandon his obsession with the late 18th century, he turned instead to The Luck of Barry Lyndon
a lesser-known 1844 novel by William Makepeace Thackeray
The choice of Thackeray was in keeping with his taste for English writers like Arthur C
Clarke (2001) and Anthony Burgess (A Clockwork Orange)
Those previous writers were contemporaries and
nearly all of Kubrick’s previous films took place in the recent past
Now he would try his hand at what would essentially be a costume drama
He would be recreating the past rather than creating the future
Some saw Barry Lyndon as a mere consolation prize
The film critic Alexander Walker called it a project “born on the rebound,” while production designer Ken Adam described it as a “dress rehearsal” for Napoleon
But Kubrick’s fascination with the Napoleonic era was evident in the film’s DNA
Thackeray himself had been fascinated by the French emperor, incorporating him into his novel, Vanity Fair, and writing The Second Funeral of Napoleon in 1841
Barry Lyndon draws heavily from the same historical themes
exploring the illusions and brutal realities of social ambition
What captivated Kubrick about Thackeray was his ability to expose the cruelty beneath the polished facade of aristocratic life
The rigid etiquette of the 18th century – a period described variously as an age of gentility
sensibility and enlightenment – demanded an emotional detachment that fascinated the director
conspicuous consumption and the mercenary nature of marriage
These themes resonated deeply with Kubrick
whose films often explored power structures
Some critics have noticed a similarity between Kubrick and his lead character
Kubrick felt one step removed from the society around him
Ryan O’Neal’s casting as Barry was largely a commercial necessity – Kubrick needed a bankable star – but it also added a personal layer
The novel’s narrator observes that “those who’ve never been out of their country…” lack a certain perspective
a Bronx-born autodidact who had taught himself everything from chess to classical music
This theme of the outsider striving for greatness runs through much of Kubrick’s work. In 1960
he spoke admiringly of “the outsider who is passionately committed to action against the social order,” whether criminals
and from Spartacus to Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange
Kubrick’s protagonists are often men on the fringes of society
though his ambitions ultimately lead to his downfall
it contains what might be his most heartbreaking scene
namely Barry’s devastation at the death of his son
revealing a rare vulnerability in Kubrick’s work
Barry Lyndon was more than a historical exercise
pursued at great financial and artistic risk
Kubrick created a film that is as much about social mobility and exile as it is about 18th-century Europe
a film that turns the past into something mesmerising yet achingly real
It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lyndon G
Born on January 22,1957
and the simple pleasures of the world around him
His hands were known for their skill as a carpenter
crafting beautiful pieces that will live on long after him
bringing smiles to his neighbors and the community of Dora every day with his friendly demeanor and ever-present sense of humor
Lyndon was a man who never met a stranger and could light up any room
His infectious laughter and love for life made him the life of every party
Lyndon was the kind of person who could always be counted on to lift the spirits of those around him
He was also known for his selflessness
Lyndon was the type of man who would give you the shirt off his back if you were in need
His friends knew him as a loyal and generous companion
always ready to lend a hand or offer a kind word
he approached life with the same risk-taking spirit
always seeking the next adventure and enjoying every moment to the fullest
and guidance will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him
He leaves behind his wife Debbie Greathouse of Portales
NM and Mistie Greathouse (Vanzant Culbreath) of Ruidoso
He is also survived by his sister Angelia and Jimmie Mace of Alto
5 grandchildren Maddie and Maizie Milner and Deshawn
2 nieces Veronica Mace Wadley (Joshua Wadley)
a host of friends who will continue to cherish his memory
He is preceded in death by his father Allen Dale Greathouse and Mother Bessie Whiteley Chapman
His uncle Pete Greathouse and Aunt Carmen Greathouse
A celebration of Lyndon's life will be held at Wheeler Mortuary on Saturday
and your laughter will forever echo in our hearts

which attempts to limit billboards and other forms of outdoor advertising
as well as junkyards and other unsightly roadside messes
The act also encouraged “scenic enhancement” by funding local efforts to clean up and landscape the green spaces on either side of the roadways
“This bill will enrich our spirits and restore a small measure of our national greatness,” Johnson said at the bill’s signing ceremony
what has been divinely given to nature will not be taken recklessly away by man.”
Lyndon Johnson's presidency is remembered in part for his handling of the Vietnam War
but he also advanced civil rights and equality throughout the nation
“The subject of Beautification is like a tangled skein of wool,” she wrote in her diary. “All the threads are interwoven—recreation and pollution and mental health and the crime rate and rapid transit and highway beautification and the war on poverty and parks … everything leads to something else.”
Many urban activists, along with a number of other people who were beginning to think seriously about the consequences of the nation’s poor environmental stewardship, supported Mrs. Johnson’s efforts.
Business groups, polluters and advertisers, on the other hand, were not so thrilled. Lobbyists for the Outdoor Advertising Association of America and their Republican allies managed to water down the highway-beautification bill significantly. Companies that had to take down their billboards were compensated handsomely by the government.
Still, Johnson’s bill was important: It declared that nature, even just the strips of nature along the country’s roadsides, was fragile and worth preserving, an idea that still holds great power today.
America's interstate highway system cut through the heart of dozens of urban neighborhoods.

the president of the United States believed in higher education
one of Lyndon Johnson’s central goals was to move legislation through Congress that would make it easier for Americans to afford the cost of attending a college or university
Johnson believed that providing everyone with the best possible education was as vital as social safety net programs
President Donald Trump has turned federal funding for higher education into a bludgeon
He is attempting to drain universities of vital research funds that sustain scholarship on international problems such as Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDS
His administration has imposed draconian terms on several major universities
insisting that it won’t negotiate over funding unless the schools accept dramatic expansions of federal control over departments
Congressional Republicans are contemplating a massive endowment tax that would severely cut into the money select universities have available to finance their operations
Those in default will be referred to debt collectors
or put into repayment plans which automatically take funds from their earnings
The president has created a number of other challenges to college students and graduates
including issuing an executive order to dissolve the Department of Education
the agency that would ordinarily help people navigate these obligations and the changes to the law
Trump and the congressional GOP might eliminate a number of important programs
Trump has already targeted Public Service Loan Forgiveness
a program put into place by President George W
Bush in 2007 that provides debt relief to graduates who go into the public sector
President Biden’s SAVE program and various loan forgiveness programs might also be on the chopping block
While there are certainly enormous problems with the federal student loan program
there is little reason to believe that the administration has any plans to undertake good-faith reform
is to dramatically curtail and weaken a higher education program that has been at the heart of the economy and society since the end of World War II
President Lyndon Johnson had a very different vision for America
Johnson believed in the power of education and insisted that the federal government needed to play an important role in ensuring that every citizen who wanted to learn could do so
he envisioned government support as a means to help citizens become self-sufficient
Johnson has said his belief in education was forged when he took a break from his studies at Southwest Texas State Teachers College to teach poor Mexican American children in Cotulla
Johnson saw firsthand how much education meant to students who faced dire poverty and discrimination
“I shall never forget the faces of the boys and the girls in that little Welhausen Mexican School,” Johnson while signing the Higher Education Act in 1965
“and I remember even yet the pain of realizing and knowing then that college was closed to practically every one of those children because they were too poor.”
when serving in the House of Representatives and then as Senate majority leader
Johnson led Democrats as they worked with Presidents Franklin Roosevelt (Democrat)
and Dwight Eisenhower (Republican) to expand federal investments in universities—from sending students through the G.I
Bill (1944) to pouring money into research through the National Defense Education Act (1958)—stemming from the belief that knowledge was integral to economic growth and maintaining a U.S
argues the historian Christopher Loss in Between Citizens and the State
government and education embraced collaboration as a modus operandi—rooted in the Land Grant Act of 1862 (the Morrill Act)
which directed revenue made through the sale of federal lands to the establishment of land-grant colleges
it did not come as a surprise that Johnson made education a top priority in his Great Society when he was president
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 provided federal support to schools with many children from low-income communities
The president turned his attention to the next stage of the education process: college
With the Baby Boomers swelling high schools
demand to spend four years on a campus kept growing
seeking to quickly spend the political capital he had accumulated from beating Goldwater so decisively in the election
Johnson worked with the Democratic Congress to tackle higher education
The chief sponsors of his higher education legislation were Rep
a former schoolteacher (often remembered as the “mother of higher education”)
Congress passed the legislation with strong bipartisan support in both chambers
Because of the decentralized nature of the higher education system
legislators from both parties and from every region had a direct incentive to support the measure
The Higher Education Act of 1965 was a landmark achievement
The legislation set up an elaborate system of low-interest student loans
Private banks would provide the funds while the federal government would subsidize and insure them
A new work-study program was created to enable part-time students to work for their education
The bill also directed federal money to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)
A National Teachers Corps would create incentives to attract teachers within poor communities
while grants would support libraries and other academic facilities
Johnson promised that the Higher Education Act would “swing open a new door for the young people of America.” In response to conservative critics who said this would threaten federal control of schools
the president promised that the money did not come with any strings attached
“The federal government has neither the wish nor the power to dictate education,” he said
This was an investment in the United States
Just five years after Johnson signed the law
Robert Dallek noted in Flawed Giant that one out of four college students was a beneficiary of financial aid under HEA
Congress passed amendments to Johnson’s higher education legislation that increased the level of student aid and created the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant (later renamed Pell Grant) for low-income students
Congress launched the Middle Income Student Assistance Act
which eliminated the income cap for federally subsidized student loans
Congress established the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
which prepared low-income high school students for succeeding in college
it added measures that attempted to render costs for families more transparent
According to historian Joshua Zeitz in Building the Great Society
federal annual expenditures on postsecondary students rose by 10,000 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars between the time of Kennedy’s assassination in 1963 and 2010
Roughly 2 million Americans receive a bachelor’s degree every year
The kinds of young adults who now attend our cherished colleges and universities span many social
just as Johnson had hoped when thinking about the kids in the school where he once taught
the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act ended 35 years of the government subsidizing private lenders
and the new Direct Loan Program allowed the federal government to provide loans directly with an eye toward achieving savings
the federal loan program has struggled with many problems
Critics have argued that increased loans have fueled rising tuition rates
Adults are saddled with enormously challenging obligations at a time when they are already struggling with housing
The constant changes with requirements have also left former students uncertain about what they need to do or what the new rules even are
none of which has been easy with diminishing numbers of government workers to assist
The convergence of the federal student loan program facing serious challenges that require reform and make it vulnerable
and an administration hostile to higher education puts the entire federal commitment at grave risk
A president who sees every federal dollar as leverage to gain control over educational institutions won’t be able to resist this substantial pool of money
the president’s second term will culminate with universities and colleges struggling to maintain basic research programs
Federal assistance for students who need it will be dramatically lower
while most institutions of higher education will have to raise tuition to make up for lost money
They will concentrate on students of means who can pay for a full ride
Banks with a history of taking advantage of those in need will have more opportunities to exploit citizens seeking to learn
A high-endowment tax will eat away at the funds that many select universities have used to pay for the tuition of middle and working-class Americans who otherwise could not afford attendance
Higher education institutions have been a crown jewel of America for over a century
Johnson’s legislative legacy expanded access to these institutions and transformed the opportunities available to many generations of students
Students and faculty from around the world flocked to the nation’s campuses and obtained the chance to learn
and enter into intellectual communities that would serve as an important foundation for their personal and professional lives
It would leave the United States impoverished
and making the country less secure than it has been since the start of the Cold War

Intimidation and discrimination had earlier prevented Selma’s Black population—over half the city—from registering and voting. On Sunday, March 7, 1965
a group of 600 demonstrators marched on the capital city of Montgomery to protest this disenfranchisement and the earlier killing of a Black man

After an Alabama federal judge ruled on March 18 that a third march could go ahead
President Johnson and his advisers worked quickly to find a way to ensure the safety of King and his demonstrators on their way from Selma to Montgomery
The most powerful obstacle in their way was Governor Wallace
an outspoken segregationist who was reluctant to spend any state funds on protecting the demonstrators
Hours after promising Johnson—in telephone calls recorded by the White House—that he would call out the Alabama National Guard to maintain order
Wallace went on television and demanded that Johnson send in federal troops instead
Johnson told Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach to write a press release stating that because Wallace refused to use the 10,000 available guardsmen to preserve order in his state
Johnson himself was calling the guard up and giving them all necessary support
50,000 marchers followed King some 54 miles
under the watchful eyes of state and federal troops

Only in the U.S. can a boy born in a rural Texas farmhouse with no electricity or running water one day grow up to hold the most powerful office in the world
But President Lyndon Baines Johnson always believed he was destined for greatness
Not only did LBJ pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he also appointed the first Black cabinet member and Supreme Court Justice, respectively, while president. “History should make no mistake, Lyndon Johnson was a revolutionary, and what he let loose in this country was a true revolution,” Joseph Califano, one of his advisers, said, according to National Archive Records
But it was LBJ’s understanding of the connection between education
as the post-World-War-II boom began to slow
leaving certain areas of the country with fewer and fewer work options
“Technological advances in industry were also changing job requirements for American workers. The good-paying, unskilled jobs of the past were disappearing, and those without education and skills were being left behind,” said John Gardner
Johnson’s solution was an ambitious domestic plan: The Great Society
which paralleled the New Deal in generating innovative solutions and opportunities for marginalized Americans
perhaps inspired by the poverty Johnson witnessed when he held his first job as a teacher in Texas
The Great Society presented somewhat utopian goals for the country
It took advantage of his roots as a teacher too
“Education was the real road out of poverty
and he wanted to be the Education President,” National Archive records indicate
he signed into law the Higher Education Act of 1965 and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965
which aimed to provide access to education for all Americans
Head Start—a preschool program for low-income families—was also a piece of it
The Great Society led to some of the greatest social safety nets still in use by the government today
including the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964
which led to the creation of Medicare and Medicaid
“From 1963, when Lyndon Johnson took office, until 1970, as the impact of his Great Society programs were felt, the portion of Americans living below the poverty line dropped from 22.2 percent to 12.6 percent, the most dramatic decline over such a brief period in this century,” Califano writes
but how good; not only how to create wealth
but how to use it; not only how fast we are going
It proposes as the first test for a nation: the quality of its people.”
Johnson’s social safety nets created an environment for innovation that transformed the country—and the world
“If [Johnson] had not established the federal government’s responsibility to finance this educational surge, would we have the trained human resources today to function in a fiercely competitive global economy?” Califano asks
“Would we have developed the technology that leads the world’s computing and communications revolution?”
“the country made spectacular explorations of space in a program he had championed since its start
When three astronauts successfully orbited the moon in December 1968
Johnson congratulated them: ‘You’ve taken… all of us
It was also Johnson’s policies that started the country on a path toward modern environmental sustainability. Johnson passed over 300 bills to protect air and water quality
Unfortunately, Johnson’s legacy of innovation tends to be overshadowed by one of the darker outcomes of technological innovation—and the one problem he could not solve—the Vietnam War. Although he didn’t start it, he turned the conflict into a full-scale war that cost more than 3 million people their lives, according to Mark Lawrence
director of the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum in Austin
So what the hell do I do?” Johnson lamented to his wife
And yet, in spite of Vietnam, those who study the American presidency recognize Johnson as one of the best politicians to walk the halls of Congress
“Whatever anyone thinks about Vietnam and however much politicians shrink from the liberal label
the reality of the remarkable and enduring achievements of the Great Society programs,” Califano writes

(WCAX) - Authorities are looking for a suspect they say stole a dog from a home in Lyndon
Vermont State Police say someone parked a car in front of the home on Sheldon Brook Road and stole the homeowner’s nine-year-old black and tan coonhound from the front lawn
Lyndon Knowles has spent more than two decades fighting his way to the top of the Muay Thai world
he’ll finally have his shot at the most prestigious belt in the sport
In the main event of ONE Fight Night 30 on Prime Video, the hard-hitting Brit will challenge two-division, two-sport kingpin Roman Kryklia for his ONE Heavyweight Muay Thai World Title in front of a rowdy Thai crowd at the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by MUAY THAI WEAPONS (@muaythaiweapons)
It’s been a long and winding journey for “Knowlesy,” as he’s overcome personal tragedy and plenty of ups and downs on his way to this life-changing opportunity.
Before he makes his ONE debut and challenges Kryklia for 26 pounds of gold, Knowles shared with his life story with onefc.com.
The youngest of three athletic and energetic boys, Knowles has nothing but fond memories about his childhood, which was filled with activity and competition between the brothers.
He recalls his father working long hours day and night to provide for the family, while his mother was a constant and supportive presence at home:
“Growing up, my father worked his nuts off to give us everything we needed. He had two or three jobs. He was a carpenter and joiner during the day, and worked security at night and other jobs on the weekend.
“My mum stayed home looking after us three menaces, but she did a fantastic job. We didn’t have to get the bus or train anywhere. We were spoiled. My mum would drive us all to school and pick us all up. All my friends were jealous. She’d take us to football, to swimming – everywhere. We didn’t go without. We were really lucky in that respect.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lyndon Knowles (@lyndonknowlesyknowles)
Throughout his early years, Knowles tried his hand at practically every sport he could. Even at home, he and his brothers never stopped competing against each other.
It wasn’t until he was nearly finished with high school that he finally landed on Muay Thai:
“Being three young lads, we all had a competitive drive with one another. So my mum had us in several sports. We were competitive swimmers, we played football on the weekend, anything my mum could do to get us out of the house to stop us from fighting with each other, she did.
“I had my first swimming race and football matches from the age of six up until I started Muay Thai at 17 years old. But our backyard growing up was a multipurpose arena. During the winter it was football and during the summer it was cricket and tennis.”

Following in the foot steps of his oldest brother, Christian, the young Knowles quickly fell in love with “the art of eight limbs,” and before long, he found himself traveling to Thailand to learn from the best in the birthplace of the sport:
“I’d always been comfortable backing myself, but I got into Muay Thai at 17 after seeing Christian do so well. That was my impetus. I went to Thailand with him a few times afterwards and just caught the combat sports bug. I just loved it.”

Then, just two years into his Muay Thai journey, Knowles lost his beloved father to a heart attack at the age of 59.
The entire Knowles clan was, understandably, devastated. The family patriarch was both the life of the party and the image of hard work, and his death left a massive hole in the close-knit family.
Ultimately, it was the death of their father that led brothers Christian and Lyndon down the path of professional Muay Thai that they remain on today:
“When I was 19, my dad passed away. That was a hard time for the two of us, losing our father and role model who’d laid the blueprint for us to see how hard work pays off.
“Christian took the loss in that he decided life’s too short. He didn’t want to have a normal life, or have a normal job. So he carved out his own path and opened up the first full-time UK Muay Thai gym, and I helped train classes.
“I had my second fight just after [my father] passed, which was a real test after going through that hardship. That’s when Christian and I decided to embark on this journey together.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lyndon Knowles (@lyndonknowlesyknowles)
Since then, both Christian and Lyndon have cemented themselves among the UK’s top Muay Thai fighters and coaches. Their gym, Knowlesy Academy, is home to some of the planet’s best strikers, including reigning ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Jonathan “The General” Haggerty and recent ONE World Title challenger Marie McManamon.
Behind the scenes, though, “Knowlesy” struggled with the loss of his father at such an early age. As the family’s youngest, he had the least amount of time to create memories with his father:
“My mum always said I was his favorite, but we never went out for a beer together. The family holidays we had I was so young, so I don’t remember much of that. But I still have a lot of memories of him. I just wish we could have done more. That’s the thing with family, though. No matter how much time you get with them, it’s never enough.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lyndon Knowles (@lyndonknowlesyknowles)
At the time, Knowles nearly lost himself in grief and heartbreak. He felt depressed, unmotivated, and stuck without his father around.
His older brother Julian helped Knowles battle through his grief and, little by little, regain a sense of normalcy:
“If it wasn’t for my other brother Julian, I don’t think I’d have gone back to work. I was bed bound. I didn’t want to do anything. He went back to work and eventually got me to as well. If it wasn’t for my two brothers, I’d probably still be in bed now.
“I knew I had to get back to life, but it wasn’t easy. My brother told me I had to get back to work. My family are good communicators, and our word is our bond. So I knew because I’d said it, I’d have to do it. It’s all in little steps.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by WBC MuayThai (@wbcmuaythai)
Before long, Knowles was back in the gym and would spend the following 20 years largely dominating the UK Muay Thai circuit, winning a WBC Muay Thai World Title in the process, and eventually earning his shot in the world’s largest martial arts organization.
Still, he admits that the sting of his father’s death is still there and still fresh. Of course, he’s gone on to accomplish plenty in his life, but that pain has never completely gone away:
“It’s one step at a time. It’s like training when you’re tired. You’ve just got to trust the process. People tell you it gets easier. I don’t think it does. I think you just learn to live with the burden.
“You learn to carry the stones of burden in your pocket. You carry that weight and learn to deal with it.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by TheArtOf8Limbs (@muaythaiglobal8)
While Knowles was devastated by the loss of his father, he admits that the experience taught him an invaluable lesson:
“It taught me not to take everything for granted. In this career, you have to appreciate the little things.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lyndon Knowles (@lyndonknowlesyknowles)
Indeed, as he’s now just days away from his shot at gold, against one of the planet’s top pound-for-pound strikers, on the biggest stage for martial arts – and at Muay Thai’s most iconic venue – the 38-year-old is determined to appreciate every moment.
Of course, he’s supremely focused on defeating Roman Kryklia and leaving Bangkok with 26 pounds of gold in tow, but that doesn’t mean he won’t enjoy himself along the way.
“As fighters, we can be too focused on a time and date and miss out on the little things. You don’t realize that until later on. But having competed for two decades now, I know how to pick out the little moments. So I’m enjoying all of this. I’m grateful for all of it.
“There’s times in every fighters’ career where you feel like you’re wasting your time. But it’s the little things like this that mean something and make your sacrifices seem worthwhile.”

Princeton University history and public affairs professor Julian Zelizer talked about Lyndon Johnson's first speech to Congress after becoming president in 1963
This clip presents two excerpts from Lyndon Johnson's first speech to Congress after becoming president in November of 1963
Lyndon Johnson took great pride in his heritage and the land where he was born and nurtured
His grandparents were among those who settled
and converted the inhospitable land to one that grows fruit
and is decorated with pleasant homes and lakes
settled with his brother Tom in a one-room log cabin on 320 acres
It later became headquarters for the largest cattle driving operation in seven counties
Sam married Eliza Bunton of Caldwell County
In 1867 the newlyweds set up housekeeping in the log cabin
which by now also had an east room and breezeway (dog-trot)
the brothers began their partnership in a cattle driving business
unattended cattle on the Texas range increased significantly
Just as rain provided the right conditions for lush growth in the Hill Country
so did increasing cattle and human populations provide opportunities for ambitious young men
and an additional 640 acres were acquired to further expand operations
The settlement location was ideal with the valleys of the Pedernales and the Blanco Rivers providing good pasture and water
It served as a rendezvous to which individual owners delivered their herds to the Johnsons
cattle drovers would return in the autumn with mules to sell and gold to pay for the herds they had driven north on the Chisholm Trail
The Johnsons had little difficulty purchasing cattle on credit because the return at the marketplace was great
A steer on the Texas range cost from six to ten dollars and was worth from thirty to forty dollars delivered at the Kansas railheads
Several factors led to the demise of the Johnson partnership
but the main reason was essentially the same for failure as it was for success...high prices for cattle in the marketplace
the Hill Country proved to be a land of extremes
The deluge of opportunities inspired countless others to enter the cattle business which resulted in a flooded market and significantly lower prices
Sam and Tom dissolved their partnership in 1871 and moved out of Blanco County
Soon after President Johnson retired from office
with funds donated by the former President
Four of the original buildings were still standing
they included a barn and cooler house built by James Polk Johnson
Samuel Ealy Johnson's nephew and namesake of Johnson City
Together these structures serve as a testament to the courage and resolve of Texas' early settlers
As you enjoy your walk back in time try to imagine what life would have been like for the people who lived here in the 1860s and 1870s
The landscape and conditions are challenging
and with few resources compared to what we have today
People with disabilities may request a permit at the visitor center
which will allow you to drive into the Johnson Settlement
For the protection of the settlement and your own safety
All buildings at the Johnson Settlement are handicap accessible
Decorated British striker Lyndon Knowles thinks he’s the man to derail two-sport king Roman Kryklia’s run of dominance in the world’s largest martial arts organization
On Friday, April 4, in U.S. primetime, the Englishman will challenge the Ukrainian skyscraper for the ONE Heavyweight Muay Thai World Title in the main event of ONE Fight Night 30 on Prime Video, which goes down live at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium.
While Knowles will be making his promotional debut
he’s certainly no stranger to elite-level competition
A 20-year veteran of professional Muay Thai and a prestigious three-time WBC Heavywweight Muay Thai World Champion
“Knowlesy” has long been regarded as the UK’s top heavyweight striker
Now, with his career-defining opportunity against Kryklia rapidly approaching, the 38-year-old told onefc.com that he’s ready to make a massive statement:
“I’m turning up in new territory, and what better way to make yourself known than to go after the biggest guy in the yard? All the lights will be on me. All the eyes, too. It’s the main event. I’m here to take his crown.”
Clearly, Knowles is brimming with confidence. That’s because he believes he’s identified certain paths to victory against Kryklia, who also holds the ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Championship.
What’s more, the titleholder is riding a 14-fight winning streak that dates back to 2018.
Despite his foe’s lengthy list of accomplishments and status as a pound-for-pound powerhouse, Knowles plans to push Kryklia to his absolute limit at ONE Fight Night 30:
“I’ve seen some things that I know I can take advantage of. We’re going to see how it unfolds in April.
“There’ll be a reach differential between us. I’m 6-foot, I believe he’s 6-foot-7, so I’ll have some ground to cover. I’m used to that, though. In the land of giants, most guys my weight are taller than me. That still, when you’re shorter, they’re going to have to come down to your level anyway, so he’ll have come down to me at some point. When he does that, I’m going to make it as uncomfortable as possible for him.”

According to Knowles, a victory over Kryklia would mark the most important moment of his career and the beginning of his reign atop ONE Championship’s heavyweight Muay Thai division.
However it plays out, he’s predicting a finish – and a new World Champion crowned in Thailand:
“It would be the icing on the cake [to win the belt]. I’d love to defend it many times like I did the WBC Muay Thai World Title. I’ve been at this now for 20 years. So to win the biggest prize in our industry at this point, it doesn’t get any sweeter.
“My prediction is Dom Lau will say, ‘And the new!’ There’s no way this is going the distance with two big, brawling baddies like myself and Roman hitting each other in the face. I don’t go the distance. He doesn’t either. So, someone will fall.”
Although ONE Fight Night 30 will be the first time Lyndon Knowles has competed under ONE’s bright lights
it won’t be the first time the global fan base has seen him
As a coach and longtime competitor at the world-renowned Knowlesy Academy in London, England, his trademark pink hair and long mustache are often seen in the corner of the UK’s top strikers, including reigning ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Jonathan Haggerty.
Knowles said that his time in the coach’s corner has only fueled his desire to throw down:
“I can’t wait for it. It’s a different experience when you’re in the back, cornering the best fighters in the world. It’s tense. Because you’re on the outside, you can sometimes be too nervous, as you can only control so much.
“But getting to be the one inside those ropes now, instead of trailing with the bucket, it’s going to be special for me. I’ve played the long game to get here.”

Notably, Knowles’ World Title clash against Roman Kryklia will take place at the same venue where he cornered Haggerty to an unforgettable World Championship win over Thai legend Nong-O Hama.
The Brit hasn’t forgotten the thrill of that victory at Lumpinee Stadium and can’t wait to create his own history in that same iconic ring:
“Of course, I’m excited to return to that stadium. I cherish it. I hold a lot of memories there. And the chance to hold the ONE World Title is massive to me. It’s all I want to do.”

Widely regarded as his country’s top heavyweight Muay Thai fighter, Knowles is no stranger to ONE’s bright lights. In fact, the English luminary has coached and cornered reigning ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Jonathan “The General” Haggerty numerous times during his tenure in the world’s largest martial arts organization
Recently, the bantamweight kickboxing king and his younger brother, Freddie Haggerty, spoke to onefc.com about their friend and training partner at Knowlesy Academy.
According to Jonathan Haggerty, Lyndon Knowles’ move up from the ultra-tough British Muay Thai circuit to the global stage has been a long time coming.
“I’m very excited for him to be finally in ONE Championship. He’s a great athlete. For years, he’s been dominating the division in the UK, and I feel like now is the time to get what he deserves.”

As a three-time WBC Heavyweight Muay Thai World Champion with two decades of fighting experience under his belt, Knowles has erased any doubt that he belongs among the best of the best in ONE.
But beyond his proven talents inside the ring, what makes Knowles special is his selfless attitude outside of the squared circle.
“Lyndon is a very cool character. You know, in and outside the ring, he’s very different. Inside the ring, he’s an absolute machine. Outside the ring, he’s loving. He’s caring. And yeah, he’s got a heart of gold. So, he deserves this opportunity.”

With his trademark mustache, pink hair, and matching pink bowler hat, Knowles will bring his unique brand of flair to ONE — a fitting complement to his aggressive, crowd-pleasing style of striking.
“Lyndon is going to bring some excitement to the heavyweight division, some some character, some charisma, everything about him. He’s a great signing for ONE Championship.”

Like his older brother, Freddie Haggerty was quick to echo those positive sentiments about Lyndon Knowles.
The 20-year-old rising star vividly recalls watching “Knowlesy” ply his trade in the ring during his adolescence and finding inspiration in the veteran’s style.
“I’m really excited for Lyndon. I don’t think there’s anyone else that deserves it more than him. He’s been there by Jon’s side for every fight. He’s always supported me when I fight. So, it’s nice to finally see him get his turn.
“He’s going to bring nothing but war to ONE. He’s entertaining. I remember watching him as a young boy and just always thinking that I want to fight like him, just crazy.”
Win, lose, or draw, Haggerty guarantees that fans are in for a treat every time Knowles competes in the world’s largest martial arts organization.
Much more than just a decorated striker and supremely loyal training partner, the ONE Heavyweight Muay Thai World Title challenger is an entertainer through and through.
“Lyndon’s nothing but entertainment. I promise you he’ll have everyone on the edge of their seats. The fans are going to love him at ONE. His personality is great. Just everything about him is great. [He is] such a great person.”

Risk managers have one primary goal: managing today’s toughest risks by utilizing the best insurance options available
Traditional policies such as general liability
workers’ compensation give risk managers the basis for coverage and provide peace of mind should a loss or claim arise
The savvy risk manager knows that an effective coverage plan also requires flexibility and adaptability
That’s why many look to alternative risk solutions to bolster their risk management strategies
“Alternative risk solutions can help risk managers strike the balance between control and adaptability in their risk management solutions,” said Robert Curtis
offer an extra layer of control and range in terms of coverage and protection that go beyond traditional insurance to help businesses more effectively manage and transfer risk
were created in direct response to client feedback
meaning they have been created with clients’ specific risks and needs in mind
For those looking at ARS as a risk a management tool
it’s important to understand the benefits they provide for businesses
the importance of engaging with insurance partners
and how organizations can initiate ARS strategies to deliver enterprise value and build corporate resilience
ARS offer a level of flexibility for businesses
That’s because they are designed to adapt to the individual client’s needs
offering innovative and custom-built options to enhance risk management strategies
These types of solutions also give businesses an opportunity to allocate funds where they are most needed
Every business operates on a budget; having the ability to really look at where money is going and make sure it’s being utilized where it’s needed most is paramount
“As risk managers aim to control and mitigate risks effectively
ARS can help introduce flexibility into risk management strategies
enabling companies to adapt—and even thrive and hold a competitive advantage,” Curtis said
more complex organizations truly benefit from ARS due to their intricate risk profiles that require sophisticated solutions
Incorporating ARS into the mix enables a more granular view on managing those risks
“International operations are prime candidates
due to the variety of risks they face across different jurisdictions and markets
That kind of risk profile necessitates flexible risk solutions and that out-of-the-box thinking that comes with alternative risk solutions,” said Curtis
He also noted that those looking into ARS are often businesses that possess a degree of risk management sophistication
These operations already utilize traditional risk strategies but turn to ARS to become more innovative in their approach
The important question risk managers should be asking
is which ARS is the right fit for the risk
it’s not “one size fits all.” There are different program types to consider
customizable and strategic risk transfer option
structured solutions are designed to focus on a single product line over multi-year agreements
“These solutions are often very bespoke
meaning they will be tailor-made for the specific organization looking into the structured solution,” Curtis explained
This type of solution is structured so that it can meet the client’s capital needs and adjust to the “peaks and valleys,” as Curtis put it
The main goal is to help manage volatility in the market while creating capital efficiency
Parametric solutions are becoming more popular thanks to the inherent transparency built into its ARS model
This type of coverage activates based on predefined parameters
such as weather-related perils or cyber events
ensuring faster payouts in the event of a claim
Not only are the activation criteria clearly outlined
but the data used to measure and determine payout amounts is also specified upfront
This level of clarity and efficiency makes parametric solutions an appealing option for policyholders seeking prompt and reliable financial support
“Parametric agreements have known triggers built into the coverage
the insured already knows what to expect,” Curtis said
Insurers have also been looking at parametric to expand into new markets and risk areas where non-physical damage risk are prevalent for clients
“As data collection continues to increase at an exponential rate
the ability to expand development and customization on parametric programs to reduce basis risk grows with each new program,” Curtis said
Captives are a solid ARS option for businesses looking to manage and insure their own risks
but they are experiencing an uptick in interest for some of today’s more pressing risks
Curtis noted more companies are looking at captives to manage their cyber exposers or their supply chain risk—two areas where they might be running into coverage obstacles in the traditional marketplace
if they are using the captive to insure some of these more prominent risks
is there a different way to buy reinsurance,” he said
“Here’s where we’re seeing activity as more captive owners look to evolve their captives moving forward.”
integrated solutions cover multiple lines of coverage with a shared limit
integrated solutions can ease the administrative burden and provide clarity of coverage
contributing to their growth in popularity among clients
They can also act like a comprehensive umbrella policy that encompasses multiple lines of coverage
This approach not only promotes efficient capacity by allowing shared limits across various lines
requiring only one renewal every three years instead of managing multiple
“Instead of buying a separate tower for casualty and financial lines
clients will turn to integrated solutions to buy a shared limit
It turns into a more efficient way of buying capacity and having more stable capacity over time,” Curtis shared
It’s important that businesses choose the right ARS that fits their needs
Curtis recommends that risk managers place three key strategies at the forefront of their decision making: being open-minded
and taking a collaborative approach to development
“Risk managers should remain open to exploring ARS
looking at both the traditional and non-traditional options as part of their overall risk management strategy,” he said
Communicating with stakeholders and having transparent conversations around ARS will give everyone a better understanding of the end goal
When engaging with C-suite executives and board members
it is essential for risk managers to articulate the potential benefits of adopting these solutions
including cost savings and capital management
“Risk managers need to be able to communicate how these programs are going to work internally and the value they bring to the business,” noted Curtis
Effective communication will lead to collaboration
because the groundwork will be laid in those early conversations around ARS benefits
Working together with the internal team and external insurance partners will result in the best outcome
“By co-creating a solution with a client
we can ensure that the program effectively meets its risk management needs today and evolves as the organization and its needs change
These solutions are designed to be dynamic
so they continue to be relevant and impactful over time,” explained Curtis
Different ARS bring different solutions to the table
The right insurance partner will help its client achieve its ARS goals while addressing any risk management questions that arise along the way
the alternative risk solutions team is always thinking about what their clients need
The insurer recognizes the risk environment is always changing
The demand to find better solutions for long-standing resilience is paramount
and ARS can give clients a risk management boost
“Our ARS team was established in direct response to client feedback that highlighted the need for customized solutions that reflect these dynamics
We listen to our clients and recognize that as the risk environment becomes more volatile
our clients need different options to take on tomorrow with confidence,” said Curtis
Curtis and his team can work deals anywhere around the globe
They also come with extensive knowledge of international risks that need to be addressed
making the ARS underwriting process run smoothly
“When I’m developing a program
I make a point to reach out to our local underwriters
They know what that specific area’s risks are and what will help the client
It’s a truly collaborative partnership with Liberty,” he said
And that collaboration benefits clients who are looking to hone in on their risks and find customized solutions through ARS offerings
“If a client comes to us with a problem they’re trying to solve
we can co-create a customized program that works best for them,” said Curtis
