Officials of the Lyons Township Democratic Organization celebrated their growing public support at a fundraiser Thursday at the American Legion Hall in La Grange
Lyons Township Democratic Committeeman Steve Landek and Township Supervisor Christopher Getty welcomed the attendees at the event
which was themed to celebrate the annual Kentucky Derby
Landek and Getty praised the organization’s effort to support Democratic candidates and causes and noted the dozens of elected officials from across the township and region who attended as an example of “our ability to serve the public’s interest.”
“We had a very good election night on April 1st
We just worked hard for the people because that’s what we do
That’s why our Democratic Party exists to deliver services to the people
noting the local election victories contrasted the national party’s loss in the presidential elections last November
“You can’t beat that service that you give to the people
Getty thanked the Township Democrats for their “hard work” and “dedication” to the goals of the organization
the school board slates at the high school level
we saw success across our region,” Getty said
“This is a tribute to each and every one in this room
they don’t just come out when it’s election time
They work all year round in their jobs and their various duties
Getty praised the work of State Senator Mike Porfirio and Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg
and he acknowledged a list of officeholders who attended both from the organization and from neighboring organizations
“Congratulations to the Lyons Township Democratic Party Committeeman Steve Landeck
Congratulations to all the mayors and public servants here tonight,” Porfirio said
noting it has been the organizations mission to recognize that providing “good government” is “good politics.”
“That includes delivering service to people
It’s my honor to be part of the organization
Hoffenberg thanked the officials and guests and introduced the Township officials
“Thank you for all the candidates and the elected officials who grace us with our presence tonight
So let’s give a round of applause for everybody here
Thank you for coming.” Hoffenberg said before introducing all of the Township’s officials and trustees
Assessor Patrick Hynes thanked the attendees for their support and announced his plans to run for the position of Countywide Assessor in next year’s Democratic primary contest
“I love fighting to make sure that they get a fair shake in the county tax system
And I wouldn’t have the chance to pursue my vocation
I wouldn’t be anywhere without the support of Lyons Democrats,” Hynes said
announcing his plans to run for the countywide Assessor’s position
Attendees at the annual fundraiser also included County Commissioner Frank Aguilar
who all joined in celebrating the annual Kentucky Derby that followed the same weekend

They were both charged with aggravated trafficking schedule W drugs
the MDEA says undercover agents have been buying fentanyl
and crack cocaine from Lyons at his home at 151 Knowles Road in Belgrade
Authorities say they searched the Knowles Road home on Thursday and found 123.7 grams of fentanyl and an assortment of pharmaceuticals
The pair was taken to the Kennebec County Jail
Remington is being held without bail and Lyons’ bail was set at $8,000
The MDEA says Lyons has a prior conviction for unlawful drug trafficking in 2023
Barbara Roth will serve another one-year term as president of the Coalition of Boynton West Residential Associations
one of Palm Beach County's more influential neighborhood organizations
was sworn into office by County Clerk Joe Abruzzo and County Commissioner Gregg Weiss during an installation meeting on April 23 at Valencia Shores
a COBWRA member community west of Lake Worth Beach
COBWRA’s membership consists of 106 communities that have a population of more than 100,000 residents
Its members are in a 55-mile square area bordered on the east by Boynton Beach

Housing: Landholder wants to build 856 residences on preserved area; critics fear setting precedent
Roth said COBWRA will continue to oppose annexation of COBWRA communities
The City of Boynton Beach is exploring the possibility of annexing scores of communities to its west
and it may be able to do it without public hearings or holding referendums
The city claims that some of the homeowner associations agreed when their communities were developed more than 30 years ago to allow for annexation in exchange for contracting with the city to use its water supply
More: Boynton wants to annex 38 communities west of Military Trail; critics call it 'power grab'
The communities affected have said they strongly oppose annexation as the city’s tax rate is much higher than that of the county
planners and county staff to control density along Lyons Road and west Boynton Beach Boulevard
One of the concerns of COBWRA is the impact of development projects on traffic
Roth said COBWRA plans to advocate for legislation that protects
and enhances the quality of life for its member associations
The group is already planning a gala next year to mark its 45th anniversary
COBWRA has been accused of opposing growth but it says it supports smart growth that fits in with the characteristics of COBWRA communities
Much of the growth has occurred in the Ag Reserve
a 22,000-acre zone that is mostly west of the turnpike and west of Boynton Beach
The county's zoning code limits density there and protects farming operations; critics claim too much development has occurred in there

There is an opportunity for Britain in areas such as green finance
though it needs to keep clear red lines over security
The US is urging countries to agree new trade deals. The perceived risk is a bipolar world, where countries have to choose between the US and China. What are the implications for the UK?
In all likelihood this choice is avoidable. The global economy is so interconnected, fragmentation is more likely than a bipolar world.
Supply chains are complex, and involve many countries. Even as nations look to onshore supply chains, achieving this will be a lengthy and expensive challenge.
Bank for International Settlements data shows global cross-border lending is $38tn (£29tn)
with foreign banks’ credit to China at $826bn
about one-quarter of the US national debt is held by foreigners
It is not just economic and financial ties
Geopolitics suggests many countries will adopt a non-aligned approach
The government’s priority is economic growth
national security decisions are indivisible from economic prosperity
It is not feasible for the UK to decouple from China given it is the world’s second largest economy
Western Europe will remain the world’s slow growth region for the foreseeable future
while the Indo-Pacific will be the fastest
The government’s approach to China is to cooperate
Just as critics of deeper ties have to acknowledge the upside economic potential
there is a need to be cognisant of national security concerns
This might entail a clear red line in the future relationship
This would allow companies to plan ahead and reflects the challenge of calibrating the tension between economic and security issues
On one side of this line should be sensitive areas where the UK aligns with the US
The other side of the red line should be areas to be encouraged such as trade
There should be opportunities to sell far more UK services in to China’s growing consumer market
China is Britain’s fifth largest trading partner
but its cumulative foreign direct investment into the UK is low
being just 0.2% of the total stock from all countries
One area where greater cooperation is possible is in financial services
China hosted the 11th UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue
The City was looking for greater financial connectivity between the two countries
across a range of areas such as dual listings
and greater access of UK-based asset managers and insurance firms into the Chinese market

On the same day that Donald Trump announced his tariff policy
China issued in London its first offshore yuan-denominated sovereign green bond
Given subsequent events it has led to talk in the City as to how much potential there might be for London to establish itself as the global centre for green finance
Investor appetite in the UK and globally is high
but there is a shortage of green assets in which to invest
Do current events present an opportunity to cement the City’s position as the world’s second largest financial centre
Global investors are turning away from the US as a reliable partner and a safe haven
but the bigger issue is who gains in where the money finds a home and is managed
Perceived stability may be the UK’s magnet
but it would probably require smarter regulation and tweaks on tax policy to seize the moment
There is now an opportunity in a multi-polar world to make the UK a more attractive location for global investors to do business in and from
as it is less a case of the UK becoming dependent upon China and more of diversifying

Dr. Mark Tully pulled off a golf feat the likes of which a local course owner has never seen
Tully, retired from a Belden Village psychology practice, scored a hole-in-one Thursday, May 1 at Lyons Den in Canal Fulton
on which he made a hole-in-one in his most recent round at Lyons Den
Andy Lyons, 53, has seen a lot of golf, playing for Northwest High School and collegiately for iconic coach Ken Hyland at Malone while spending his life around the family’s course
but there’s never been anything quite like it on this property
“It was maybe 30 years ago when the pastor of our church used a 5-wood for a hole-in-one on No
11 and then flew in a 5-wood for a deuce four holes later.”
6 hole plays to about 110 yards from where Tully’s group teed off
“It’s a Thursday morning mostly senior league,” Lyons said
“There are 12 to 30 of them who play here mostly on Thursdays
6 the previous time the scramble group played at Lyons Den
“During those few seconds I turned away to put my club back in the bag
in none of my four holes-in-one in my lifetime did I ever see the ball go in the hole

A chance encounter in high school helped Kennedy Lyons, an elementary education major
Winter 2025 Maize & Blue Distinguished Scholar and Spring 2025 Commencement speaker from Grand Blanc
so I started working with students who had special needs when I was 16
and that set me on my current path," Lyons said
"I began offering respite care to families who had children with special needs
and I became a special education substitute teacher when I enrolled in the education program at UM-Flint
I earned my certified nursing assistant license
as I wanted to learn how to better care for my students and clients."
"Many people do not know that Kennedy has worked as a CNA throughout her years at UM-Flint
I often asked her to consider her work-life balance
especially as she neared the end of her elementary education program," said Suzanne Knezek
Kennedy refused to leave her caregiving duties at nursing homes or respite duties for families with children with special needs
'I think some time off might be a good thing,' she would reply
Kennedy's heart always leads her forward."
Lyons said that her experiences in special education and health care have helped her learn different communication styles and given her the ability to connect with diverse demographics
We need to remember that we are not all living the same experience
Equity and communication look different for each individual," she said.
A highlight of Lyons' time at UM-Flint was traveling to the Netherlands in 2023 for a STEM-education-focused study abroad experience.
"I learned so much about education and different approaches from all over the world
The educational system in the United States differs significantly from that in other countries
"Hearing all the various perspectives was an incredible reminder that
and we have the choice and opportunity to learn from one another. The study abroad trip gave me insight regarding what we do well and what we can work on."
"Watching Kennedy engage with global STEM education practices at Utrecht University was incredible — she embraced new pedagogical approaches with curiosity and humility
That trip truly expanded her lens as a culturally responsive educator," said Jeramy Donovan
Kennedy has a heart for equity and a soul for service
She will be the kind of teacher every child deserves — compassionate
field experience coordinator for the education department
shares Donovan's perspective on Lyons' time in the Netherlands
"Kennedy collaborated with educators from around the world
graciously working to learn about their cultures
and to better herself as a global citizen and educator," Foster said
"Kennedy knows these experiences will provide a ripple effect in our community and the children she serves in the classroom."
While Lyons entered her studies at UM-Flint with some professional experience and a clear understanding of the path she wanted to take
her time at the university has helped her develop a deeper self-awareness.
"I've reached a new level of growth and better understand how I can align myself
UM-Flint gave me the tools to realize that it's not about finding yourself
"The program challenged me and equipped me for that growth
Being named a Maize & Blue Distinguished Scholar affirmed that I am committed to learning every day and that I am also committed to treating everyone with love and respect
and it's important to listen to and advocate for those around you
As for her future, Lyons plans to build on her CNA experience and will enroll in UM-Flint's Accelerated Second Degree, Bachelor of Science in Nursing program
She hopes to work in special education during the week and then as a nurse on the weekends

WEST FARGO — The owners of Marge’s Diner in downtown Fargo will serve up a second helping of its down-home cooking concept when a new Marge’s opens at the site of the former Three Lyons Pub
who identified himself as the new restaurant’s general manager
posted a Facebook photo Sunday morning of the storefront with a temporary sign reading
Coming this May” over the Three Lyons Pub sign
Marge’s Diner also confirmed on its Facebook page that a second Marge's is opening in the Three Lyons location
“A new ‘Marge’s concept will be opening in the old Three Lyons location late May/early June
Just as soon as Marge finishes up a few more giant cross stitches…”
The public's response to both social media posts has been enthusiastic
15 shares and 31 comments on the FM Area Community page as of Monday morning
Described by a Forum writer as “the house from the Brady Bunch” … filled with “Midwest knickknacks and gewgaws,” and a soundtrack of 1970s’ radio hits
the original Marge’s has become a popular destination for locals seeking its everything-but-the-kitchen-sink “Hangover hashbrowns” and exuberantly kitschy vibe
Three Lyons Pub in West Fargo was opened by Blair Thorsen in 2005 and closed in late 2023
Thorsen indicated they were exploring a new restaurant concept
but wasn’t yet ready to talk about details

Lyon would be one win away from winning the Challenge Cup event a second time with a victory in their most recent match
The home team implemented their planned moves precisely at the beginning of the game
When Vincent Rattez and Beka Saginadze combined to score tries
Lyon's attacking strategies worked.
scored 19 points with penalties and conversions and scored two of the game's key tries
Tristan Tedder only managed to convert one point and one penalty; thus
Racing 92's tries from Diego Escobar and Kleo Labarbe were all they could produce during the game
left the game early because he needed to have his head injury evaluated
The squad struggled because Racing was weakened on the field due to Owen Farrell's tactical impact and team-directing skills
By effectively controlling the ball in every area
Lyon's strong forwards controlled mauls and scrums
and their backs exploited these attacks to create opportunities for rapid attacks
Racing 92's ability to score during the match was limited by Lyon's effective tactical management of their defense
Lyon can now move on to a match against Bath in Cardiff thanks to the title win
Due to Bath's consistent excellent play
the forthcoming final has become a significant competition
Lyon is attempting to capture their second Challenge Cup title as they advance to the next round of play
who leads the Lyons Community Farm Project
It’s part of a large revitalization effort that includes a new orchard along the flood plain of the St
inundating a huge swath of the town.Updated on Friday
Years from now in Lyons, Colorado, a child who missed the bitterness of a 2013 natural disaster might enjoy the sweetness of an apple or apricot
the Federal Emergency Management Agency forbade any future construction at the site and adjoining land over fears it could happen again
But Glen Delman’s idea to plant an orchard passed muster
“I love growing fruit and I picked fruit on apple farms as a kid,” Delman said
squinting in the late-morning sun on a recent day
“We want to feed the community,” added Adrean Kirk
Kirk leads the Lyons Community Farm Project
While the dribble of a nectarine and the burst of a cherry may be years away — the plants are still relative infants — the orchard has already brought townsfolk together to tend the trees. Sunday morning’s Spring Blossom Festival also aims to make this tight-knit community even tighter
We see that there’s possibility and opportunity for rebirth,” Kirk said
On this riverside plot, wind and rushing water muffle the whir of nearby traffic, as an unending necklace of vehicles heads to Rocky Mountain National Park. Also on this slice of land, a stone labyrinth and artwork fashioned from flood detritus invite reflection. Delman wants to erect a wind phone, to encourage people to speak to loved ones who have passed on
“I’ve been hearing so much about how the lack of community and of being social in the United States is a disease these days,” Delman said
“We’re really trying hard to make this a community effort.”
look forward to the day when Lyons’ children can enjoy the fruit of their elders’ labor
it’ll be a squirrel or bear that gets the first taste

I sat down with Chancellor Lyons to talk about the Lair
We met at the University House in Berkeley
could resemble a profoundly polished version of the Camp Gold Lodge in Pinecrest
There was a casualness to our conversation
the kind that comes when two people share the same place
hoping to see the Lair the way Chancellor Lyons does: through the eyes of a camper
and someone who gets how the worlds of the Lair and Berkeley twist together.
who’s known for carrying his guitar around camp
reflected on how the Lair fuels Cal spirit
and offered some words of wisdom for the staffers and campers to come
he gave a quick nod to Top Dog Tuesday lunch and a shoutout to “Hail to California.”
Note: Chancellor Lyons’s responses have been revised for simplicity and smoothness
and then I came back in the early ’90s as a faculty member
I was a guest speaker at the Lair and brought my family up
The guest speaker thing was kind of my way in
I was at the Lair for an event toward the end of the week
so the announcement had just been made that I was the new Chancellor
‘Thank you for being among us.’ It was such a fun phrase—‘working retail.’ But what really stood out was the connection
I was excited to be directly engaged with people
It’s the communal moments that stand out—the shows
who’s been a staffer for the last couple of summers
and those shared experiences that create such a strong sense of connection
Singing those songs we’ve heard so many times
surrounded by a group of people who’ve come together—that’s it
being part of something that ties you to a larger community
Part of it was just seeing how much she grew from the experience—I think that’s true of a lot of the staffers
and she really had to take responsibility for it
and I loved watching her grow and recognize her growth
the staffers are always supporting each other every step of the way—whether someone needed coverage or had to cover for someone else
and I were at home while Nicole was on staff last summer
A call came in late—Jen’s phone was on Do Not Disturb
but Nicole’s number was set to break through
calling to let us know that she and her fellow staffers had just reached the top of El Capitan
She wanted to share that moment with her mother
That was such a lovely moment—just a great moment
I think the breadth of experiences at the Lair is incredible
There are so many different things people can get plugged into
For the kids who love being around younger kids
And for people who are oriented toward arts or music—there’s something for everyone
Another thing that comes through strongly is the emphasis on building connections
As you think about the next summer or even the following year
you realize just how much relationship capital you build at the Lair
One piece of advice is to be intentional about building those relationships
But if you approach certain connections with a bit more intention
you can expand your opportunities moving forward
There’s so much you can do to make it feel like your own
Another thing to think about is: What are the things you never seem to have enough time for
I’d connect with the Music Director and get a private lesson
What you get from the Lair sticks: a six-month-later benefit
Not in the sense of ‘What do you hope to achieve in a week?’ but more like
‘What are you passionate about?’ I read a phrase in a book the other day that talked about nourishing one’s soul
How might the Lair help you nourish your soul
you’ll show up feeling more ready to lean in
I think part of stepping into a role like this is recognizing the generational aspect of it
The Berkeley community encompasses the whole stack of generations
I might connect with current students at a football game or attend an alumni event
I’m mostly interacting with just one generation’s perspective at a time
You can see this in action at the shows and meals
Some people have been coming to the Lair for 30 or 40 years and you think
these people are really rooted here.’ Then you have the five and ten-year-olds running around
It’s that kaleidoscope of generations all involved
we often think of it as the shared behaviors
One of the things that stands out about Berkeley is its commitment to the public good
When you consider the scale at which Berkeley educates
and no public university matches the quality of our research
What I get a sense of at the Lair is this unique Berkeley spirit; it’s in the songs
and the support people show each other at places like Creekside
We sometimes use the phrase ‘beyond yourself,’ which points to this deep sense of stewardship for something larger
many universities claim to be committed to a greater cause
truly lives out its mission in a distinct way
You can see that reflected in the culture at the Lair
Being away from the routine of everyday life is part of the experience
you see the same families and reconnect in familiar ways
We used to play frisbee golf with the same group; it’s a small
but something you look forward to every summer
It’s this repetition that helps you be more intentional about what a week in nature can do for you and how to make the most of it
I can’t tell you how many solo walks I’ve taken to Pinecrest Lake
Those were some of the most productive thinking times I’ve had
I think that connecting faculty to the Lair is so important
I remember being there before Nicole joined the staff and meeting other faculty members who are still close friends
Expanding faculty involvement and integrating more parts of the university could help the Lair represent all of Berkeley
It would also be interesting to get my senior leadership team and UC Berkeley trustees to experience the Lair firsthand
but it could strengthen connections across the university
keeps bringing home the axe—the Lair remains steady
It’s that quiet reminder of what really matters: community
it’s clear that just as Berkeley is bigger than a school
the Lair is bigger than a campfire and some trees
It’s where countless corners of the Cal community come together
and where you invest in the relationships that will shape both your personal and professional futures
and ‘work retail.’ It’s about time—time spent outside
The Lair is a cornerstone of the Berkeley experience
From signed Cal Athletics memorabilia to lunch with Chancellor Lyons

Tune in for a fun and informative glimpse at what you can expect from a Lair of the Golden Bear vacation

UC Riverside Distinguished Professor Tim Lyons is the winner of the Geobiology Society’s 2025 Robert M
named for a pioneer in the field who also mentored Lyons’ own mentor.
the society was formed in 2016 in response to the growing prominence of geobiology
the study of how life and Earth shape each other over time
The field explores deep connections between living things like microbes
was a groundbreaking geochemist best known for advancing our understanding of how elements move through the planet
a process scientists refer to as ‘global cycling.’
Garrels also recognized that the cycling of elements on land and in the oceans strongly affects levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere
These cycles are driven by natural processes like plate tectonics and ocean circulation over hundreds of millions of years
Garrels mentored Robert Berner who picked up the global cycling torch and became known for modeling atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide
“Much of what I know about science and how to do science
a distinguished professor of biogeochemistry in UCR’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
“Berner was a Picasso of geochemistry because of the vast range of research paths he created and mastered
and we have all benefitted from his work,” Lyons said
Lyons is a clear descendent of this scientific lineage
His research shows how today’s richness and diversity of life stems from billions of years of gradual changes in biogeochemical cycles and biosphere evolution that reshaped Earth’s surface.
“Tim is also widely regarded as the world leader in developing and applying innovative proxies for tracking chemical changes in the rock record from the period in which oxygen first appeared on Earth,” said Kurt Konhauser
professor of geobiology and geomicrobiology at the University of Alberta.
Lyons’ deep understanding of ancient Earth has led him to explore a wide variety of questions
from the origins of life to the search for it far beyond our solar system
he’s focused on urgent issues in human and ecological health
where a variety of environmental hazards are brewing in the desert sun.
Lyons advises being open to a variety of ways to applying knowledge
and “working to answer questions that matter to people,” Lyons said
“Think big in the questions you’re asking and surround yourself with gifted people.”
He also credited the remarkable students and postdocs at UCR with helping to elevate his career

Subway has named Greg Lyons as its new global chief marketing officer
The news comes a week after PepsiCo confirmed Lyons’ departure from the company
He most recently served as CMO of its North American beverage division since 2017
where he led Pepsi to achieve 18 consecutive quarters of growth and supported brands like Gatorade
Lyons was succeeded by Mark Kirkham
who was promoted from svp of marketing for PepsiCo’s sparkling brands
the sandwich chain’s interim CEO and former chief marketer
Lyons will lead the brand’s global marketing
Lyons will also work directly with Subway’s newly appointed U.S. creative agency of record Leo New York to lead its guest-centric marketing strategy
“With more than 25 years of experience in the industry, Greg is widely respected for his ability to renew iconic brands through integrated, consumer-led marketing,” Walsh said in a statement
Lyons added: “I’ve been a fan of the Subway brand for as long as I can remember
and it’s an honor to join the company at such an exciting moment in its journey
I look forward to building on Subway’s iconic legacy and bringing its creative strategy to life in bold
Following leadership changes and an AOR switch
Subway is aiming to “boost franchisee profitability and elevate its position in the market globally.”
Last year, private equity firm Roark Capital bought the sandwich chain for $9.6 billion, marking its first ownership change since its founding in 1965. Former global CEO John Chidsey also retired in 2024
Subway isn’t required to disclose its financial results, however, Statista estimates that its U.S. sales in 2023 reached $9.98 billion, up from $9.78 billion in 2022. The company has also been quietly closing locations nationwide since 2015

At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Lyons, who plays for Folsom High in California
has thrown for over 6,000 yards and 84 touchdowns
while rushing for more than 1,500 yards and 38 touchdowns in just two seasons as a varsity starter
Thanks to this high-level production, the talented QB is the No. 3 overall quarterback recruit in the class of 2026 as well as the No. 1 player and QB in California, according to 247Sports
he is the reigning Gatorade State Player of the Year for the state of California and has morphed into one of the best dual-threat options in the nation
Combined this with the fact that Lyons has a professional mindset and a high-level aura
it’s easy to see why he stands out even when surrounded by other four- and five-star recruits
and I just have to stay humble and keep working because I really haven’t proven anything
I still have some stuff to prove in college and must stay humble and keep working,” Lyons said this week at OT7 Golden Ticket national tournament
where he is competing with his Cold Hearts 7-on-7 team
Lyons' final college decision will cause a massive domino effect for all Power 4 schools and national recruits as pressure continues to build on him daily to decide
Lyons is navigating through the recruiting waters smoothly while moving closer toward making a final decision
Odds are high he will commit before the 2025 season starts in the fall
“The schools I’m going to take visits to are Michigan and Ohio State next week
and I just got back from Ole Miss this week,” Lyons said
I’ve seen so many schools except Michigan and Ohio State
but things are going to come down to how I fit in with their program and the culture of their school and how much do their coaches believe in me.”
Lyons is a great candidate to pull a six- or seven-figure bag before he even steps foot on campus
the talented right-handed gunslinger is simply a competitor who legitimately enjoys the game of football and competing
Lyons led his nationally ranked seven-on-seven squad Cold Hearts to a couple of big wins in the OTC national tournament all in the name of competition
With his recruitment under such a huge spotlight
the fact Lyons is still playing in high-profile tournaments gives one some insight to what it’s going to take to get him to sign on the dotted line
and obviously I’m going to compete with anyone in the country,” Lyons said
“I don’t want anyone to promise anything because that’s no realistic
but I definitely want the opportunity to compete and play early
but obviously I have a lot of confidence in myself and do believe I’m the best quarterback in the country
I’m a joyful person who is an extravert and enjoys the game of football.”

supporters of the UC Berkeley Library filtered into the Roger W
Heyns Reading Room for a meeting of the minds
listened with rapt attention as a conversation
the centerpiece of this year’s Luncheon in the Library
unfolded in Doe Library between Chancellor Lyons and University Librarian Suzanne Wones
and the first undergraduate Cal alum to become Chancellor — painted a picture of the university
it’s nearly unrivaled as an engine for upward mobility
Its alumni create more businesses than any other university
And it provides equitable and broad access to a world-class education
“No private university educates at our scale,” said Lyons
who formerly served as dean of UC Berkeley’s Walter A
“And no public university researches at our quality
Lyons and Wones started in their new roles on the same day last summer
and have already struck a tone that honors the university’s long tradition of excellence while embracing change
the leaders talked about what sets UC Berkeley — and the Library — apart
The research that happens at UC Berkeley changes the world
Allison’s Nobel Prize-winning work at UC Berkeley helped revolutionize how cancer is treated
Contributions from sociologist Arlie Hochschild
and many other luminaries at Berkeley have rippled well beyond their fields
(Lyons recalled taking Hochschild’s class as a student at Cal
is at the heart of what makes Berkeley great
“It’s like a lifelong love affair with ideas and learning.”
When discussing his own pioneering research
Lyons earned his business degree at Berkeley in 1982 and came back to join the faculty in the ’90s
earning a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1998
or the price of goods and services between countries
emerged an idea that he “basically got tenure for,” he said
By examining trades between banks over time — and taking note of whether a transaction was initiated by the buyer or seller — Lyons revealed a microeconomic explanation for how exchange rates are determined
the phenomenon had been described in terms of macroeconomic forces
“It’s like you’re a biologist in a world with no microscopes
The audience erupted in applause after the energetic economic excursion
a mini lecture displaying Lyons’ dexterity in making dense topics not only understandable but exciting
“The thing that really grabbed my attention was his research,” said Michael Jeon ’99
a guest at the luncheon whose work for an overseas fund made that part of the discussion particularly relevant
a new member of the Council of Friends of The Bancroft Library
also noted the “fireside”-style Q&A format was a natural
inviting way to get to know the leaders.
Lyons took up guitar as a grad student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
inspired by a street musician he would see in Harvard Square
provided an escape during a time in his life that he described as “hopelessly unbalanced.”
he plays his acoustic steel-string guitar at least a little bit
“We all need a decompression — we all need a meditation in our lives,” he said
Ensuring that students feel a sense of belonging is not only right — it’s a requirement if the Library wants to successfully serve its mission
The Library is a fountain of knowledge — a provider of massive amounts of information
and friendly support to help make sense of it all
But none of that matters if students don’t feel welcome
“We have to be really intentional about how we present ourselves to the students and make sure they know that they belong here
and we will help them find the information that they need,” Wones said
the influence of leaders on an organization’s culture is something of an “obsession,” he said
Belonging is among the most important aspects of culture
and a topic that demands careful attention
The conversation between Lyons and Wones resonated with Madie Neely, who was among a group of students in the Sligo Scholars program eating together under the vaulted ceiling of Doe Library’s North Reading Room
(“It’s really pretty,” Neely said of the library
“It’s exciting to see the university dedicated to a student-centered experience
and all the good they’re up to,” said Neely
invite-only event honoring Library supporters

Todd Lyons said he wanted US immigration agency to be ‘like a business’ in its deportation process
The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he would like the agency to implement a system of trucks that rounds up immigrants for deportation in a system similar to how Amazon delivers packages around the US
“We need to get better at treating this like a business,” the acting Ice director, Todd Lyons, said. He said that he wanted to see a deportation process “like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings”. His comments were first reported by the Arizona Mirror
Lyons was one of a series of Trump administration speakers at the 2025 Border Security Expo at the Phoenix convention center. Other speakers were Trump’s “border czar”, Tom Homan, and the secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem.
Read moreSpeakers at the expo praised Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans
the 1798 law that was last used during the second world war to intern Japanese Americans
Noem promised to expand on its use to more efficiently deport immigrants
Homan said “that is a law enacted by Congress, and we are using that”, referring to the Alien Enemies Act. At around the time of the expo, the US supreme court ruled that the Trump administration may continue using the law to deport alleged gang members
Homan added that it “bothers him” when judges attempt to prevent him from using the act. He also said that family detention was still “on the table” as a policy
Lyons also spoke highly of other new technology being potentially implemented in the deportation process
He expressed hopes that the agency could utilize artificial intelligence to “free up bed space” and “fill up airplanes”
allowing Ice to deport immigrants at a quicker pace
The Ice director also said that he has been working with Elon Musk’s “department of government efficiency” (Doge) for access to social security numbers to look for “voter fraud”
Several speakers, Homan included, echoed the opinion of having a deportation system that is run like a business, with assurance that the Trump administration is depending on the private sector for completion of its mass deportation agenda. Many representatives from the military-industrial complex were in attendance
“Let the badge and guns do the badge-and-gun stuff
Trump campaigned heavily on implementing a system of mass deportation, and has spent his presidency so far attempting to deliver on his campaign promises. Data suggests as many as 1,400 people were arrested during or right after Ice check-ins in the first four weeks of his administration.
Free newsletterA deep dive into the policies, controversies and oddities surrounding the Trump administration
Read moreOne of Trump’s first actions after he was sworn in for his second term was to broaden Ice’s mandate
Now all immigrants without legal status are prioritized for arrest
including those who have been checking in and cooperating with authorities
“Ice’s fantasy of becoming ‘Amazon Prime for deportations’ exposes the infrastructure behind Trump’s deportation agenda: mass removals powered by big tech and data,” Cinthya Rodriguez
national organizer for the Latinx advocacy group Mijente
Ice has contracted with tech companies to automate policing
relying on the dehumanization of immigrant communities
“To seek to automate deportations at Amazon-like speed only furthers that harm,” she added “These policies are cruel
reckless and driven by white supremacy and greed – not safety.”
Avelo Airlines recently said it had signed an agreement to fly federal deportation flights for the administration from Mesa
Several thousand people signed a petition urging the airline to halt plans to carry out the deportation flights
The mass deportations and ongoing cases of people being detained by Ice has caused unease and fear among immigrants and foreign visitors to the US. Recent data suggests that flight bookings between Canada and the US are down by over 70%
Terri Sewell (AL-07) announced that she will bring Ms
Division 3 Vice President and Legislative Political Coordinator (LPC) for the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 2206
as her guest to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening
“The nearly 10,000 federal employees in my district work hard every day to deliver the services that our communities rely on,” said Rep
“The way they have been treated by this administration is nothing short of disgraceful
Trump’s attacks on our federal workforce are not only a slap in the face to our hard-working civil servants
but they are a direct threat to programs like Social Security which are a lifeline for so many Alabamians.”
“I’m looking forward to bringing Chelsy Lyons as my guest to the President’s address,” continued Sewell
“Throughout her more than 17 years with AFGE
she has fought tirelessly to ensure that our federal workers are treated fairly and with dignity
Rest assured; Alabama’s federal workers will be well-represented on Tuesday night.”
“I am greatly honored for the opportunity to join with such a fervent
Congresswoman Terri Sewell,” said Ms
“Representative Sewell is one of my greatest inspirations and role models
She has broken glass ceilings and has left trails of greatness for us to follow
Her work in the State of Alabama is undeniable and extraordinary; she is necessary
She is a force to be reckoned with and I consider it an immeasurable privilege to work beside such an honorable legend.”
Lyons began her federal career in 2008 as a Claims Authorizer for the U.S
Social Security Administration where she has continued to serve for the past 17 years
she joined AFGE after witnessing the powerful zeal
AFGE is the largest federal employee union
representing 800,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia
AFGE represents almost every type of federal employee with its highest membership from the Department of Veterans Affairs
Alabama is home to roughly 41,000 federal employees
including nearly 10,000 in the 7th Congressional District (excluding uniformed military personnel and federal contractors)
