AZ — John Wooden recruited him to play basketball at UCLA while Branch Rickey wanted him to play baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers He was teammates with Hall of Famers Willie Mays Ernie Banks and Larry Doby during his playing career He managed Hall of Famers Billy Williams and Bruce Sutter Welcome to the beautiful life of Jim Marshall Marshall is an original member of the infamous 1962 New York Mets and will be honored Monday night as the oldest living Met before their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field “I worked in baseball for 70 years," said Marshall His greatest memory of that historic season where the Mets went 40-120 and produced the most losses in a single season until the Chicago White Sox toppled it last year “Opening Day at the Polo Grounds," Marshall says they booed the hell out of me because Gil Hodges wasn’t playing Rufus James Marshall, who has gone by his middle name since attending Compton High School, spent five years in the major leagues as a first baseman and pinch-hitter. He played three years in Japan for the Chunichi Dragons. He managed the Chicago Cubs for three years and Oakland Athletics for a season He scouted nearly 25 years for the Arizona Diamondbacks He spent two hours with USA TODAY Sports talking about his life his fondest memories and favorite funny moments from his 70-year professional baseball career Casey Stengel's trouble with names“Casey was so bad with names, and when I was playing for the Mets, he kept calling me Blanchard. There was a [Johnny] Blanchard with the Yankees where he managed before “One day I’m in the batter’s box at the Polo Grounds 'All of the players are in the middle of the so shoot for the lines.’ I guess it made sense The batter ahead of me had dug a pretty good hole in the batter’s box 'Make it nice and comfortable because that’s where you’re going to be [expletive] laying I think he means it.' Sure enough he knocked me down on my [butt] Ichiro family fandom“When I was scouting the Pacific Rim, I saw Ichiro [Suzuki] a lot and he told me that his dad was a huge Chunichi Dragons fans and actually has a picture of me in their house the first time I see him when he gets to Seattle “I remember how he wanted to come to America so bad and he used to come and swing the bat right in front of me The crazy thing is he could have been a great home run hitter if he wanted to Marshall was the first American-born player to go from the major leagues to Japan 'You don’t have a chance of making this team next year They had such a love for baseball and nobody ever talked about the war The only trouble was when we went to places like Osaka and Hiroshima 'Go Home White Monkey,' in Japanese – but the players protected me." Japanese legends who could have been MLB stars“People always ask me how many home runs Sadaharu Oh would have hit in this country. I don’t know, but I do know that there were some players that would have been stars over here. I’ll never forget seeing [Shigeo] Nagashima They would always come over to the stands and say hello to my wife whenever they saw her They definitely could have been stars over here “But after spending so many years there as a player and a scout I never imagined we’d see someone that big and strong coming out of Japan like [Shohei] Ohtani." Piper Davis his teammate with the Oakland Oaks in the Pacific Coast League “I was in the Pacific Coast League and Piper took me under his wing We would go to each other’s room and talk baseball almost every night He would tell me so much about Willie Mays and how he helped develop him and protect him from outside influence Davis played for the Birmingham Black Barons and the Homestead Grays in the Negro Leagues He was most famous for getting Willie Mays to play for the Black Barons in 1947 when Mays was just 16 Mays credits him in his early development into becoming one of the greatest players in history Davis nearly joined Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby breaking the color barrier in 1947 when he was signed by the St Louis Browns and the Boston Red Sox for 1950 “That was such a shame because he was such a fabulous man," Marshall said “It’s tough to separate, but I’ve got to say Rick Monday is on the top of the list when I managed the Cubs. He was such a great, young kid. I was there the day he grabbed the American flag when those kids were about to burn it I put you in the lineup so you could do that now you have a lifetime job with the Dodgers So now he gives me $1 every time he sees me." Those are the days you got knocked down quite a bit I played in Memphis and they had a sign for steamed laundry 'Did you know that Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews just missed it?' Well and that was one of my biggest thrills in baseball." Marshall was part of the first interleague trade in baseball history when the Cubs traded him along with pitcher Dave Hillman to the Boston Red Sox for first baseman Dick Gernert on Nov So they traded me in spring training to Cleveland Now the trade is over and I’ve got to go back to the Red Sox So the general manager comes over and tells me my wife is swimming over in the apartment right beyond right field and by the end of the day I’ll find a team for you.' At the end of the day I went to the San Francisco Giants I got a nice letter from him later on apologizing “I went to the Chicago White Sox when Larry Doby [the first Black player in American League history] was there He was a great player and an awfully nice man." “It had to be Wrigley Field, and that’s when they still had people sitting in center field with white shirts. It was tough to see. But my very first game there as a Cub in August 1958, I hit three home runs in one day. I hit two in the first game of the doubleheader against the Phillies and they were forced to put me in the second game I only hit two more homers the rest of the season “I still remember sitting on the bench in Chicago We’re playing the Giants and there’s a young guy sitting next to me on the bench things are going to get better.’ It was Billy Williams they somehow found out that we were stealing signs they decided that Banks would be the target they hit him right in the middle of the back and could barely walk up the flight of stairs up to the clubhouse He went around the bases without saying a word It was the final day of the 1976 season and Cubs infielder Bill Madlock was trailing Ken Griffey Sr While Griffey was kept out of the lineup to help preserve his batting title “I got a call from upstairs and they said to not let Madlock hit But they explained he just went ahead of Griffey.’ “I went to Madlock to tell him and he asked why it was the first time in my life I took a guy out of a game who was 4-for-4." and he comes right down after the game and offers me a scholarship 'I want you to be my point guard.’ I thought about it a lot If I'd known I was going to be in the minor leagues so long “I remember walking out of the stadium one day with Vin Scully 'My neighbor keeps throwing trash over my fence.' “I got to become good friends with Don Newcombe and he played a year for the Chunichi Dragons too tell me about Jackie Robinson.’ I saw Jackie play football at UCLA He is such a fierce competitor that you can't have fun doing anything with him He's out to beat your (expletive) in golf or whatever else you want to do.’ Marshall was wearing his 2001 Diamondbacks World Series ring on his left hand and the 2023 NL pennant ring on his right hand at lunch has a Chunichi Dragons championship ring and Triple-A Denver Bears championship at home as well as a ring honoring him from the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation I met her in junior high school at Roosevelt in Compton We met because we were listening together to the [1946] World Series on the radio between the Red Sox and the Cardinals during class She was from Missouri and was a Cardinals fan I give all of the credit for everything to her and I can’t tell you how much I miss her every day." who have a lot of money invested in the outcome have been paying rather close attention to suspended former All-Star shortstop Wander Franco’s recent posts on social media The posts have shown him visiting a nursing home “There is no torment that God cannot heal.” who insisted that his career is not over in his last court appearance begins his trial on June 2 in the Dominican Republic and faces 20 years in prison on charges of sexual abuse sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking Franco has been on MLB’s restricted list since July 2024 and is under MLB investigation for violating its domestic violence He would be free to resume his major-league career and the Rays would likely be legally required to fulfill his contract after his case is resolved by Dominican authorities and MLB’s investigation is owed in excess of $150 million after this season – While the Miami Marlins will wait until ace Sandy Alcantara (2-3 8.31 ERA) starts showing signs of improvement to trade him several contenders are keeping a close eye on Minnesota Twins ace Pablo Lopez who returned a week ago from a hamstring injury $73.5 million contract that the Twins could unload this summer if their free-fall continues The Twins entered Saturday with more losses than any team in the American League except the Chicago White Sox and already are eight games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers – The Cardinals were hoping that hanging onto closer Ryan Helsley the first half of the season would enhance his trade value but after saving a league-leading 49 games last season he has only four saves in six opportunities with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP they still are trying to trade All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado The Los Angeles Dodgers have yet to express interest while still hoping that third baseman Max Muncy escapes his early-season struggles – If the Baltimore Orioles aren’t a contender by the All-Star break teams will be pouncing on starter Zach Eflin reliever Seranthony Dominguez and center fielder Cedric Mullins at the trade deadline – It turns out that the teams who waited out the free-agent market wound up getting the best bargains in baseball (stats through Friday): – This weekend was the first time Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson was able to meet up with Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich since their commercial shoot in March and the first thing he planned to tell Yelich: "You look good in hair." Swanson, Yelich and Dustin May of the Dodgers shot a commercial this spring for DIRECTV in which they appeared bald in the national advertising campaign “We had a ton of fun," Swanson told USA TODAY Sports You get to know guys like playing against them being able to do things like that with one another is “I hope that you never actually go bald.'" the former NCAA All-America wrestler who became one of the most successful agents in the business working alongside Alan Nero of Octagon passed away at the age of 71 after battling cancer He made such an impact that Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez missed a game to attend his funeral and Bobby Witt Jr sent out a heartfelt message on social media “Scotty was more than an agent for me," Witt said It was an honor for our family that he could represent both me and my dad in our careers We will carry his legacy for years to come.” – Remember when everyone thought the Los Angeles Dodgers had too much pitching they made history this past week when they became the first team in history to use 11 different starting pitchers before May No pitching staff has produced fewer innings by their starters and no bullpen has thrown more innings “It’s not a good quality of life," Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior told reporters – Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander badly wants to join the exclusive 300-win club He’s stuck at 262 victories with the Giants’ blowing his last three games in which he’s yielded a 1.96 ERA who have lost six members of their opening-day roster to injuries including ace Logan Gilbert and leadoff hitter Victor Robles They finished April ranking third in homers (45); third in on-base percentage (.339); sixth in OPS (.754); and seventh in runs per game (5.07) They entered Saturday having gone 15-4 in their last 19 games Not bad for a team whose splashiest move in the offseason was signing 31-year-old Jorge Polanco to a one-year $7.75 million contract after declining his $12 million option but also a front-office nerd when they acquired Ryan Loutos from the Cardinals worked in the Cardinals’ front office it its analytics department to help develop an app "Chirp," that is still in use by the Cardinals – Has anyone seen the Texas Rangers’ offense It’s as if they swapped uniforms with the Mariners from a year ago They have scored three or fewer runs in 21 games this season enduring their longest drought since June 25-July 5 with only five extra-base hits in their four-game series last week against the Athletics They’ve squandered their fabulous pitching the lowest it has been through 33 games in franchise history the Athletics would be in the playoffs if the season ended today after finishing 105 ½ games out of first place in the AL West the past three years They have baseball’s third-best record since April 15 – If you’ve got a spare left-handed reliever Aaron Judge had a slash line of .207/.340/.414 with six homers and 18 RBI in April and was the unanimous AL MVP winner hitting .322 with 58 homers and 144 RBI So, what in the world could be in store for him this year by having the greatest April of his career He’s hitting nearly 200 points higher than the league average of .241 and 83 points higher than any player in baseball He’s the only player in the DH era to lead the AL in all three Triple Crown categories entering May and only the third player to hit at least .430 with 10 home runs in the first 33 games joining Henry Aaron in 1959 and Jimmie Foxx in 1932 especially after how we ended the year last year not winning the World Series there was a lot of work to be done,” Judge told reporters “All you can do is look in the mirror and try to figure out ways to get better and try to improve – Who would have imagined that the small trade in December when the Yankees acquired right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz and minor-league catcher Alex Johnson from the Cincinnati Reds for catcher Jose Trevino would pay such dividends Cruz has been one of the game’s most stunning surprises And Trevino filled in quite nicely during Tyler Stephenson’s absence – You wonder how important three-time batting champion Luis Arraez is to the Padres’ lineup They are 19-6 with him in the starting lineup and 1-5 without him The Padres about to become even better with center field sensation Jackson Merrill expected to return to the team on Monday – No pitching staff has been more surprising than the Mets this year who have the top starting rotation in baseball (2.36 ERA) despite being without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas while letting Jose Quintana and Luis Severino walk away All that for a Mets starting five that currently carries a total price tag of $38.85 million — which ranks right between the 2025 salaries of Zack Wheeler ($42M) and Jacob deGrom ($37M) – The most underrated player in baseball continues to be Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez who became the first third baseman in history to hit at least 250 homers and steal 250 bases in his career – Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert finally started to hit (.346 with three homers eight RBI and six stolen bases) this past week the White Sox hope to have him traded by Memorial Day are trying to become the first team since 1900 to reach the postseason averaging less than 3.5 runs for a season but yet still have a winning record in the woeful AL Central – That was former Uber driver and substitute teacher J.C. Escarra who hit his first career homer last week for the Yankees goals that you have," Escarra told reporters – Kudos to Orioles GM Mike Elias for blaming himself which is yielding the worst ERA in the American League The Orioles failed to re-sign free agent Corbin Burnes and then tried to replace him with Charlie Morton “I’m in charge of baseball operations," he told reporters “and when we have a bad record to start the year – No one in baseball loves PNC Park in Pittsburgh more than Padres manager Mike Shildt the highest by any manager with at least 25 games at a ballpark in MLB history who will be a coveted free agent this winter He is 2-0 with 0.71 ERA and 21 strikeouts in two starts this season at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium compared to 0-4 with a 7.01 ERA everywhere else – No one delivers heartbreak like the Cleveland Guardians who now have 12 walk-off victories against the Minnesota Twins since just 2022 – How impressive has the Cubs offense been this season They entered Saturday having scored an MLB-leading 202 runs their most in the first 33 games since 1938 They have scored at least 10 runs in eight games this season who’s scheduled to start Sunday for the Houston Astros in his first game since the 2022 World Series Follow Nightengale on X: @Bnightengale The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. Download for award-winning coverage, crosswords, audio storytelling, the eNewspaper and more AirPods aren’t the only way to go when it comes to getting yourself a solid pair of earbuds. enough as Herd’s winning streak ends at 7 Box Score – Marshall Baseball dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton Marshall sees its seven-game winning streak end as the Herd falls to 25-23 overall and 10-13 in Sun Belt Conference action "It was a tough game today for us," Marshall Baseball head coach Greg Beals said leading to too many strikeouts on our part Give them credit – they had three two-out doubles that scored all their runs We need to bounce back tomorrow and win a road series." All nine runs scored by the teams combined came with two outs on Saturday Marshall jumped out to the early lead on the Monarchs building a 4-1 advantage on the strength of a pair of two-out two-run home runs in the early stages of the contest A.J. Havrilla continued his strong week of play, belting a two-run blast in the third inning to score he and Maika Niu with the game's first runs After ODU trimmed the lead in half in the bottom of the third, the Herd answered right back in the top of the fourth when Nolan Wilson's two-run blast clear the left field wall to bring he and Elijah Vogelsong in The fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Monarchs got key hits and the Herd struggled to plate runners in similar situations After Old Dominion used a three-run double in the fourth to tie it loading the bases in the fifth before a strikeout ended the frame The Monarchs then took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single The Herd again had its chances in the seventh with a pair of runners in scoring position but could not get over the hump in the loss Havrilla and Eddie Leon combined for six of Marshall's eight hits in the contest with Havrilla finishing 3-for-4 with the two-run home run and Leon going 3-for-5. The 33-year-old is preparing to graduate from the University of Mount Olive (UMO) in May with a degree in Early Childhood Education and is ready for the next chapter in her career to begin. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and work in the public school system,” said Marshall. “But school was never easy for me. I had to work hard for my grades in high school and at UMO. That has meant making sacrifices—missing social events and pushing myself to stay focused. But I knew I had to keep going to better my future.” A simple radio advertisement influenced Marshall’s decision to enroll at UMO in the summer of 2021. Intrigued, she reached out for more information and discovered that a former coworker had graduated from the same program. That reassurance and UMO’s supportive environment sealed the decision for her academic pursuits. “UMO has truly transformed my life,” she said. “My professors and advisor have been incredibly encouraging, helping me build confidence in myself as both a person and an educator.” Returning to school as an adult student came with its fair share of challenges. Marshall juggles a demanding work schedule with an hour-long commute while managing online coursework. Adapting to virtual learning was initially difficult, but she remained determined. “Technology has never been my strong suit,” she admitted. “But I had to push myself and adjust. The biggest challenge has been time —balancing everything is tough. Thankfully, I have a great support system at home and at work.” Marshall’s love for teaching was ignited at a young age by two of her elementary school teachers whose kindness and encouragement impacted her. “They made school a place where I felt loved and capable of anything,” she recalled. “That’s what I want to be for my students. I want to be the reason a child looks forward to coming to school and enjoys learning.” As graduation approaches, Marshall is eager to take the next step in her career. She aspires to teach kindergarten in the public school system, ideally at the same elementary school she once attended. “My goal is to use what I’ve learned at UMO to make a difference in early childhood education,” she said. “I want to retire knowing I impacted children’s lives, just like my teachers did for me.” Marshall and her husband, Justin, share their Fayetteville, NC home with their beloved dog, Bella. Copyright © 2023 Shaw Local News Network The guards carried Robert Brooks into the infirmary face down holding him by his cuffed hands and ankles Once inside a private exam room at Marcy Correctional Facility officers beat and choked him while nurses lingered in the hall Brooks died the next day at a nearby hospital Lawyers for the Brooks family say the guards intentionally took him to the infirmary because it lacked cameras due to medical privacy concerns But unbeknownst to the officers and nurses a few of the guards’ body cameras were turned on The footage of a medical setting transformed into the scene of a brutal homicide shocked the public and led to murder charges against six officers in an attack that started in his cell and continued in the infirmary at Mid-State prison across the street from the facility where Brooks was killed Prosecutors have charged two officers with murder in the attack on Nantwi While beating deaths and murder charges like the Brooks and Nantwi killings are incredibly rare alleged physical abuse in New York prison infirmaries is not The Marshall Project has identified 46 allegations that corrections officers assaulted prisoners in medical wings of New York prisons since 2010 according to a review of court settlements while many others were left with severe injuries such as collapsed lungs and broken bones three women have alleged in lawsuits that male officers raped them in an infirmary These numbers are probably an undercount of the assaults committed inside medical units because many prisoners don’t file complaints for fear of retaliation or not being believed The Marshall Project analysis didn’t include allegations from lawsuits that have been dismissed Prisoners and advocates say guards abuse people in the infirmary because it’s tucked away and has areas with no cameras Beatings in the infirmary of one New York prison were so common prisoners called the medical wing “the torture chambers.” At another facility the infirmary was called “the slaughterhouse.” Many allegations mirror those in the Brooks and Nantwi killings in which guards continued to attack the men in infirmaries after beating them in different areas of the prison a teacher slashed her own leg with a razor and blamed it on an incarcerated man A group of officers then beat the man as they dragged him to the infirmary where officers ordered the medical staff to leave placed a plastic bag over his face and beat him until he nearly died The teacher later admitted her report was false and resigned A prison spokesperson said the man never told investigators about the plastic bag guards at the same prison escorted a prisoner into the infirmary where they kicked and punched him leaving him with fractured ribs and injured lungs “We are regularly told about assaults from staff occurring in prison infirmaries,” said Sumeet Sharma a director of the Correctional Association of New York a state prison oversight group that visits with incarcerated people and employees “There's this understanding that medical staff is not to judge how those assaults happen but to provide treatment and medical care when those assaults do happen.” corrections Commissioner Daniel Martuscello III ordered that all security staff with body-worn cameras must record whenever they are around prisoners “It’s on us to create a culture that isn’t based in violence and respects the lives of everyone in our care,” Martuscello said in a statement to The Marshall Project The correctional officers union did not respond to questions or a detailed list of findings for this story medical staff must examine the prisoner as soon as possible and document any injuries This usually means a trip to the infirmary But in cases The Marshall Project reviewed violence that starts elsewhere in the prison continues or even escalates once a person is inside one of the relatively secluded rooms within the medical unit “The infirmary is the biggest beat up place inside of any facility you go to,” said Leon Lagandean who said he had been beaten in infirmaries in three New York prisons He is suing the state for a 2018 assault in the infirmary in Elmira He said assaults often happen in infirmaries because they’re one of the few areas without cameras A prison spokesperson said the department is using new software and hiring analysts to identify patterns in areas where officers use excessive force He said that many incidents in one location would be a hotspot calling for further review who was incarcerated at Groveland Correctional Facility while he walked across the yard to pick up mail Castaldo said he had bumped into one of the guards the day before in his dorm huh?” according to a lawsuit Castaldo recently filed The guards then knocked Castaldo to the ground and began kicking and punching Castaldo and striking him with batons They handcuffed him and pepper sprayed him before taking him to the infirmary a sergeant and another guard continued the attack punching and slapping him in the presence of a nurse Castaldo said the beating left him with severe hearing loss in his left ear; he said the prison didn’t respond to his repeated requests for a hearing test stitches for open wounds and X-rays for possible broken ribs A department spokesperson said investigators didn’t look into whether guards assaulted Castaldo in the infirmary because he only reported being beaten in the yard The infirmary is a busy and critically important area in a prison It is where guards take people for medical appointments and treatments While many beatings began elsewhere in the prison officers attacked prisoners who were already in the infirmary seeking medical attention When an incarcerated man went to the medical unit at Sullivan Correctional Facility in 2022 with chest pain dislocating his jaw and causing permanent hearing loss The department said that no injuries to the man were reported or noted at the time His attorney said that’s because he wasn’t given the opportunity to report his injuries The department also asserted the man wasn’t following instructions and was pepper sprayed and restrained after he lunged at officers After Matthew Raymond had a series of seizures in 2016 Troy Mitchell and a group of other officers put him on an exam table in the emergency room at Auburn prison Mitchell pulled Raymond’s shirt over his face held his head down and slowly poured a bucket of water over his mouth and nose Raymond testified that Mitchell then punched him in the face and neck and beat him in the groin with a baton while other officers held his legs open Raymond suffered permanent injuries to his genitals and bladder from the attack He underwent surgery to reconstruct his bladder and may never be able to have kids again The state settled with Raymond for $1.2 million Nurse Hoppins examined Raymond after the assault and noted injuries to his face and red marks on his body but he had on boxers and she did not examine his genitals Hoppins testified in the case that Mitchell told her he was going to put in his paperwork that Raymond injured his face during a seizure But Mitchell had shown Hoppins video that contradicted that story he told her it wasn’t her business since it was a security issue He’d been sexually harassing her for years so there was nothing she could do without him knowing The department didn’t try to discipline Mitchell for the alleged waterboarding The department did cite him for failing to hand in his state-issued handgun and for emptying a canister of pepper spray point blank into the eyes of another prisoner in the infirmary Mitchell agreed to retire and forfeit a few months of pay In a prison medical unit, security directives can sometimes get priority over health needs and nurses don’t have the independence they’d have in other clinical environments nurses should stand up for the prisoners in their care and they need leaders who will back them up when they do a prison health care consultant and former director of nursing for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections “Our role is advocacy for the patient,” Muse said We owe a duty to the public,” and part of that duty is following the ethics and standards of nursing then witnessing harm and abuse should give you pause Tucked out of view from most staff and the incarcerated population and that can leave people vulnerable to abuse some women have alleged male guards took advantage of that seclusion and raped them An attorney representing DeJesus in the civil lawsuit declined to comment Officers were required to use body cameras at Albion in areas of the prison without wall cameras Albion had a limited number of functioning body cameras at the time New York prisons began equipping guards with body cameras 10 years ago, but progress was slow. In October, only seven of the state’s 40 prisons were using body cameras, according to New York Focus There are now 25 prisons equipped with cameras for every officer on duty the officers may have thought the infirmary afforded them privacy since they never activated their body cameras But some of their cameras were in fact recording during the assault “There are a lot of atrocities that take place in the prisons,” Brooks’ father told New York lawmakers during a February hearing nobody could have told me that these things were transpiring in our jails and in our prisons.” Photo by: Austin RaySoftball’s Senior Weekend Schedule Altered5/1/2025 1:07:00 PM | Softball - Due to impending weather forecasts later in the weekend Marshall Softball will now play a doubleheader against Georgia State on Friday and a second game to follow from Dot Hicks Field The series opener Thursday is set for 5 p.m Senior Day festivities will take place a half hour prior to the 2 p.m The Emileigh Cooper Warrior Award ceremony is to be determined One of the top items on the to-do list for Marshall’s next mayor will be the city’s infrastructure needs The Marshall City Council adopted the city’s street improvement list for the year last month with over $700,000 worth of needs identified City administrator JD Kehrman says in an effort to control rising costs some of the projects are maintenance efforts intended to extend the life of the current surface Kehrman notes that the projects are drawing on available city reserves and suggests an alternate funding source may be needed in the near future The Marshall City Council will consider bids for cold milling and emulsified asphalt slurry seal during their meeting Tuesday evening at 6 p.m RESTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–John Marshall Bank) is proud to announce the hiring of John Ashkar as Senior Vice President Ashkar will lead the Bank’s business banking team and platform while expanding the Bank’s small business lending programs which will feature an increased focus on the Bank’s partnership with the US Small Business Administration he will play a key role in adding SBA Express loans to the Bank’s extensive lineup of dedicated small business products John Marshall Bank’s business banking platform features a robust lineup of financing options and more that businesses of all sizes can use to succeed the Bank expects to launch an SBA Express product which outlines the Bank’s pursuit of expanding its product offerings to small businesses For local businesses looking for a trustworthy and efficient financial partner John Marshall Bank is designated as a Preferred Lender by the SBA This status allows the Bank and its team to make certain loan approval decisions without the SBA’s direct approval getting small businesses the funds they need and deserve at an expedited pace “Bringing John onto the JMB team reflects the Bank’s commitment to the success of our small business clients,” stated Jason R “We’re excited for the opportunities that he brings to the Bank and his immediate impact in expanding our SBA 7(a) program and launching SBA Express for new and current small business clients.” Ashkar brings over 31 years of experience to the Bank most recently serving at TD Bank as the Small Business Market Manager for the DC Metro region Ashkar graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and has helped small businesses succeed throughout his entire career © Copyright 2012 - 2023 | citybiz | All Rights Reserved Rain: 7am to 7am: .00  Month: 1.51 Year: 25.00 Recorded temps:  High: 68 Low: 46 An area resident and former state legislator has received a federal appointment for the second time. Mavericks roster coming into the 2024-25 season that had fans licking their chops After shooting a career-best 38.5% from 3-point range in his last year with the New Orleans Hornets he’s long and he’s got just enough of a mean streak to stand up for his teammates without becoming a bully Marshall is exactly the kind of guy you’d bring in expecting to get an offensive bump from your generationally talented offensive behemoth who creates more shots for his teammates than anyone else in the NBA He’s also exactly the kind of guy you’d bring in to help mask some of that generationally talented offensive behemoth’s shortcomings on the defensive end He was a near-perfect addition to a Luka-Dončić-led team Max Christie and a handful of pocket lint on Feb when the rest of the roster dropped like flies due to a cosmic bout of injury trouble His 3-point shooting was the one facet of his game that let him down a little for much of the season as he ended the year shooting an abysmal 27.5% from deep That number is more than 10 percentage points down from the previous year For a guy whose previous high-scoring average for a season was 9.1 points per game he seemed to be settling into a good spot here in Dallas He averaged 14.3 points on a more respectable 34.5% from 3-point land in November December and January were much quieter months when Marshall was oftentimes the team’s last offensive option left standing in the wake of injuries to Anthony Davis Marshall and Spencer Dinwiddie shouldered much of the scoring burden in some games that were tough to watch at times but they kept the Mavs afloat in the Western Conference playoff conversation 7.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as his role increased out of necessity down the stretch But he proved he could do it on both ends of the floor and he proved he was becoming a team leader much like the role Washington grew into just ahead of Marshall He was willing to do the dirtiest work at a very dirty time to get the job done He became a fan favorite at a time when many Mavericks fans lost the ability to feel real human emotions any longer There is a special corner in basketball heaven reserved for guys like Marshall Though his 3-point shot left him for long stretches, he developed a lethal driving floater Defenders couldn’t deal with Marshall’s combined strength through the shoulders and the 7’1” wingspan on his 6’7” frame when he decided it was time to get to the bucket It was almost like at some point Marshall decided that It’s resourceful and shows off the adaptability of his game his best offensive month of the season by far was the same month that Marshall’s 3-point shooting sank to a season-low (to that point — it would actually get worse in April) 23.7% but he was the best player on the Madison Square Garden court He was everywhere against the Knicks that night shooting 17-of-25 from the field and finishing the game without a single turnover in 38 minutes Marshall signed a three-year, $27-million contract with the Mavericks last offseason replacement at small forward but is a much more imposing physical presence and proved to be much better than the outgoing DJJ on the offensive end and the deal will have Marshall in a Mavericks uniform for the next two seasons He’ll become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 Will Marshall’s 3-point shot return to him in his second year with the Mavericks or was his 38.5% mark in 2023-24 the aberration Even regressing to his own career mark of around 30% would be an improvement from his first year in Dallas you’d have to squint pretty hard to find any glaring flaws in Marshall’s game With Kyrie Irving on the shelf with a reconstructed ACL for a good chunk of the upcoming season the Mavs may continue to look to Marshall (as well as Washington) to provide some significant scoring punch to go along with his well-established bonafides on the defensive end but that doesn’t mean he can’t get better at one or two things Marshall set new career-best averages in scoring (13.2 points per game) and rebounding (4.8) in his first year with the Mavericks and he didn’t have to sacrifice any of the hard work on the defensive end he’s become known for to get there that’s something that an offseason spent in the gym can address adaptable and brings a ton of heart to the Mavs lineup Lord knows they need a heaping helping of that By:
