Between a new Mexican restaurant and familiar fast food franchises
there are a variety of new eateries opening in Milwaukee's northern suburbs
Here's what to know about a few of the planned openings coming soon to the North Shore:
A new Mexican restaurant planned for the former Sobelman's location in Mequon is moving forward with plans to open by fall
according to the March 17 Planning Commission meeting
business owners Sergio Zambrano and Jose Guzman received unanimous conditional use and site plan approval to open The Mexico Bar & Grill at 10352 N
Port Washington Road on the southeast corner of Donges Bay Road and North Port Washington Road
Zambrano and Guzman already operate eight other Mexican restaurants across Wisconsin with similar menus
This will be the first Milwaukee-area location
The owners bought the building from the owners of Sobelman's in 2023 after the restaurant closed in April of 2022 following a seven-year run
The building has been vacant since the closure
The duo initially sought approvals from the commission in July 2024
but commissioners tabled the application due to concerns about the exterior design plans
The approved hours of operation are from 11 a.m
The owners’ application said the business would likely have up to eight people working any given shift and would seat 90 people inside
Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s are set to open a co-branded shop at the Bayshore Town Center shopping mall in Glendale this summer
The two snack brands will open in a shared 1,005-square-foot space at 5756 N
according to a March 18 news release from Bayshore
The storefront was formerly occupied by Kilwins, which closed in March of 2024.
The shared space will allow visitors to satisfy sweet and salty cravings under one roof with warm cinnamon rolls and baked pretzels
Visitors will also be able to indulge in churros
as well as pretzel nuggets and lemonade from Auntie Anne’s
For more details on the opening date and to learn more, visit the Bayshore website.

Suffolk County (NY) District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced that Raul Ayala
was indicted for Murder in the First Degree and other related charges for the brutal 2003 murder of 88-year-old Edna “Timmie” Schubert in her North Bay Shore home
“This indictment demonstrates that justice has no expiration date
Through the relentless dedication of our retired and active law enforcement officers
coupled with advances in forensic technology
we were able to charge this defendant for the brutal murder of Edna Schubert which has haunted Suffolk County for over two decades,” said Tierney
Schubert was a beloved friend to many and whose life was tragically cut short in an act of senseless violence
I thank the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Section
and the Suffolk County Crime Lab for their hard work in getting us closer to bringing her alleged killer to justice.”
“Decades after Edna Shcubert was senselessly murdered during a brutal attack in her own home
her perpetrator was finally identified and arrested
due to the unrelenting efforts of Homicide Squad detectives,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina
“Let this case serve as evidence that no matter how much time passes

neighbors discovered Schubert’s body in her bedroom after noticing that one of her windows was shattered and that her front door was ajar
detectives extensively documented the scene and preserved fingerprint and blood evidence throughout the home
Despite extensive investigative efforts by the Suffolk County Police Department
The breakthrough came in 2023 when retired Suffolk County Police Department Detective Pasquale Albergo
contacted the Suffolk County Homicide Section with the hopes that advances in technology could help solve the murder of Schubert
Homicide Detective Brendan O’Hara took up the cold case investigation and collaborated with retired fingerprint expert Detective Timothy Kelly
Kelly compared fingerprints from the crime scene to Ayala’s fingerprints and determined that they were a match
Ayala allegedly lived less than 200 yards away from Schubert’s home
Further investigation focused on previously untested blood evidence found at the crime scene
DNA analysis of stains on Schubert’s pantyhose and a white long-sleeved shirt revealed a mixture of Schubert’s DNA and an unknown individual
An investigation into Ayala began and law enforcement learned that Ayala was still alive and living in Talmo
members of the Suffolk County Police Department traveled to Georgia to conduct surveillance on Ayala to collect discarded items from him for laboratory analysis to compare to DNA recovered on Schubert’s clothing
Law enforcement secured multiple items that Ayala was allegedly observed discarding including multiple lottery scratch-off cards and plastic bottles
Those items were brought back to New York and submitted to the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory for analysis
DNA from one of the bottles that Ayala allegedly discarded matched the unknown DNA found mixed with Schubert’s DNA from her clothing at the scene
by members of the Suffolk County Police Department with assistance from local law enforcement in Georgia
Ayala was arraigned on the indictment before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I
for one count of Murder in the First Degree
and two counts of Murder in the Second Degree
Justice Horowitz ordered Ayala held without bail during the pendency of the case
and faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of the top count

A chilling murder mystery in New York that went unsolved for over two decades has finally been cracked thanks in part to a pair of determined detectives long since retired
was indicted for first-degree murder in Suffolk County Court on Friday
in the 2003 killing of Edna “Timmie” Schubert
a widowed former Department of Motor Vehicles employee who lived alone
was found dead inside her North Bay Shore home on Fredrick Avenue on Dec
Her body was discovered by neighbors who noticed her front door ajar and a shattered window
known for her kindness and deep connections to the community
Despite extensive investigative efforts at the time
when retired Suffolk County Police Detective Pasquale Albergo
reached out to the department’s Homicide Section
hoping that advancements in forensic analysis could finally bring justice for Schubert
Detectives reopened the cold case and collaborated with retired fingerprint expert Detective Timothy Kelly
A meticulous reexamination of the preserved fingerprint evidence from the crime scene led to a match with Ayala
who lived less than 200 yards from Schubert at the time of her killing
Further analysis focused on previously untested blood evidence found on Schubert’s clothing
Investigators determined that DNA from stains on her pantyhose and a white long-sleeved shirt contained a mixture of Schubert’s DNA and that of an unknown person
Determined to bring Schubert’s killer to justice
authorities launched an undercover operation in August 2024 to track Ayala in Talmo
Surveillance teams collected discarded items
including multiple lottery scratch-off tickets and plastic bottles
DNA from one of Ayala’s discarded bottles was found to be an exact match to the unidentified DNA at the crime scene
Suffolk County Police arrested Ayala in Georgia on Thursday
he was indicted on the following felony counts:
he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole
“This indictment demonstrates that justice has no expiration date
we were able to charge this defendant for the brutal murder of Edna Schubert which has haunted Suffolk County for over two decades,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney
“I thank the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Section
and the Suffolk County Crime Lab for their hard work in getting us closer to bringing her alleged killer to justice.”
NY — Since President Donald Trump took office immigrants have been on high alert with ICE agents raiding homes and detaining immigrants across the U.S
with multiple confirmed ICE sightings in Suffolk County—including four this month
IF's ICE tracker has documented six more ICE raids—including one where an immigrant father was detained—according to Ahmad Perez
Central Islip and North Bay Shore on Sunday during a "morning of fear," and again on Monday
Perez told Patch he has "reason to believe they operated on Tuesday as well."
The April raids are the latest confirmed on the tracker since three in Brentwood and Wyandanch earlier this year
"This is what systemic injustice looks like—federal agents patrolling our neighborhoods and tearing families apart during breakfast," Perez said
"What happened this morning wasn’t about safety—it was about fear
Our community has the right to live without the constant threat of ICE at our doorsteps
an immigrant father residing with his adult child was detained by ICE agents during Monday's Fulton Street raid in Brentwood after five plainclothes agents returned following a raid on Sunday in the same area
"I woke up to a message on Monday saying 'they came back
My dad is missing and I don't know what to do,"' Perez told Patch
The organization also reported confirmed ICE raids on April 6 in Central Islip on Applegate Drive, and in North Bay Shore on Candlewood Road. The tracker says agents arrived at both locations in unmarked vehicles around 9 a.m., wearing vests stating "POLICE ERO," ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations
which "manages all aspects of the immigration enforcement process
detention and removal of aliens who are subject to removal or are unlawfully present in the U.S
The April ICE raids are the most recent reported on the tracker since early 2025 sightings
12 incident where plainclothes ICE agents in unmarked vehicles arrived at a Brentwood deli around 9 a.m.; and the Jan
Marshal agents in an unmarked black Ford Explorer made a "targeted visit" at the corner of West Booker and Straight Path in Wyandanch
"The events that unfolded on April 6 are a true reflection of injustice and oppression
patrolling our neighborhoods and challenging our strength
All of this is not a testament of this nation’s greatness
but rather this nations’ shortcomings toward our strongest patriots: our immigrants," said Chris Hidalgo
"I beg the communities to look out for your brothers and sisters
to be aware of your rights and be aware of what’s happening
our communities will not fail to exist and together
Perez told Patch the ICE tracker was launched in response to the Brentwood raid and to "ensure that accurate information is disseminated and help protect our community from the harmful effects of misinformation and fear."
He said the tracker manages verified sightings of ICE agents reported by local residents
It's updated daily with information in both English and Spanish
Islip Forward encourages all community members to utilize the ICE tracker and report any verified sightings

NY — Suffolk County Police Arson Squad detectives are investigating a fire that raged in a Bay Shore diner early Tuesday morning
The Bay Shore Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Peter Pan Diner on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore around 1:40 a.m
Police said the diner was closed when the fire broke out and no one was in the building
photographer Anthony Frevola observed that firefighters found the blaze at the rear of the building
Firefighters said it took around two hours to bring the fire under control
Brentwood and North Babylon fire departments while Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance provided emergency medical services
The opening weekend for Wisconsin fishing brought joy to people glad to get back out on the water
It also brought headaches to the Oconto County Forest
Parks and Recreation Department as its fish cleaning station at the North Bayshore boat landing in Oconto repeatedly clogged
The station gives fishermen a place to fillet their fish and dispose of the remaining carcasses
the intake ended up clogged both on Saturday
"We got it unplugged and less than 12 hours later it was plugged again," said Monty Brink
they announced the station would be closed for the rest of the season
but in reality they hope to fix the problem and let fishermen resume using it this year
they don't have a timeline for it to reopen
They have to figure out if some mechanical issue is the root of the problem
Brink said because they had to clean 30 to 40 fish carcasses "jam-packed" into the intact chute
"The chute gets plugged cause the fishermen don’t read the directions sign
because the unit needs to be running prior to inserting your fish," Brink said
where fishermen are told to feed in their fish scraps one at the time
The machine pulverizes the waste and it flows down into an underground tank before the grinder automatically turns off
"You should be able to plop your five fish in
in the two minutes that it is running," Brink said
That prompted placing an 8½-by-11-inch sign with directions on how to use it
that signage was later increased to one that was 5-by-6-feet in the hopes that more people would see the instructions
Monty said he plans to see if the company has a technician who can come out to "tear it apart and see if there is a tooth missing on the grinder
or if there is something out of alignment that won’t grab the fish
The county does have the largest grinding system offered for the Barracuda fish cleaning stations
Oconto County Administrator Richard Heath said the station is "a really great service that we provide to the public" and the county needs to figure out how it can best continue
"I think it’s a pretty simple system but we have to make sure that it’s safe and usable and we can keep open for longer periods of time than just a few hours at a time at this point," he said
the man-hours required to put in to fix the fish cleaning station taxes the department's staff
Heath said it takes a two-person team about four hours to unclog it every time
That's hours that are not able to be spent preparing the county's other parks and recreational facilities ahead of Memorial Day weekend
Heath vows the county will get the station reopened "as soon as we can."
"We need something better in place so that service can continue and people coming off the bay can have a place to clean their fish and property get rid of their … fish carcasses," he said
"We’re searching through some options right now and seeing what the best one might be for this situation."

NY - Suffolk County residents will be hitting the polls next month to elect several local representatives
In addition to local town and village races
residents should look into who will be running to represent one of the 18 legislative districts in Suffolk County
Patch asked candidates in the contested races to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near
of North Bay Shore is running for election as Suffolk County Legislator for District 9
the eastern portion of Brentwood and a section of the Village of Islandia
Her opponent is incumbent Samuel Gonzalez (D)
The Republican challenger studied teaching at the National University of El Salvador
She previously worked as Program Coordinator for Pronto of Long Island
works in Suffolk County Department of Public Works
Check out Patch's full Q&A with Vidal below:
Patch: The single most pressing issue facing our community is _______
gang activity and the impact of the opioid crisis is hurting the quality of life for residents in the district
LD 9 communities needs to focus on renewing the trust between the law enforcement community and residents in order to address these problems
* Restore community policing programs in high crime areas
and Department of Labor to develop job training and job opportunities for our young people keeping them focused on their future away from predatory gangs
* Hold county officials responsible for building better trust and better relationships between law enforcement agencies our residents and business owners
* Make the mental health needs created by the opioid and substance abuse crisis a priority in the county government
* Restoring funding for county mental health programs
* Making sure the Health Department has enough staff and resources to help victims of substance abuse and their families
*Focus on better coordination of mental health care services for patients and their families
P: What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post
V: The problems in our community need the attention of a full time Legislator
The needs of our constituents in the 9th Legislative District require the dedication of someone who is in the community and available to work with residents and solve the problems in the District that have been neglected for 20 years
I will provide full time representation to Brentwood
in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)
Central Islip and North Bay Shore have been under represented in the County Legislature
As a result the needs of our community are often overlooked while our problems grow worse
Countywide the crime rate is going down yet in our community the crime rate is actually increasing according the Suffolk County Police Department statistics
Our community is unfairly targeted by the Red Light Ticket Program compared to other Legislative Districts which financially hurts our residents
Businesses of all kinds are leaving the 9th Legislative District and taking good jobs with benefits with them
The closure of the Entemann's facility is just one example
The traffic congestion along Suffolk Avenue
and Carlton Avenue which are county roads is growing worse each year
In each of these policy areas our county leaders have offered no solutions and made little effort to make improvements
In order to keep our young people on Long Island
P: Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform
V: Job creation and improving the business climate needs to be a priority for the 9th Legislative District
Building a business friendly environment is a two part approach
the county has to work on the crime and traffic problems that have grown worse for the last 20 years
the county must address the fiscal crisis it is in
Suffolk County can not meaningfully address the priorities in the community without restoring fiscal stability to the county budget
* Put a stop to fees and regulations that hurt businesses
* End the practice of borrowing money the county can not afford to pay back to cover operating expenses despite raising fees and taxes every year
*Work with county and local economic development agencies to bring economic development resources to Brentwood
P: What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job
V: My work at Pronto of Long Island for the past 10 years both as a volunteer and then as their Program Coordinator has prepared me in understanding the problems identified above that our communities are struggling with
I also have learned how to work with diverse groups to find common sense solutions to these problems
I will be able to use these skills that I have learned to accomplish more for the community that I live in and served for many years
P: The best advice ever shared with me was ..
so be honest and be true to yourself in everything you do because your actions represent you
and the people who surround you" My mother and my my mother in law both shared this advice with me
P: What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions
V: For every milestone in my life whether it has been in my career or as a volunteer I am always committed to do my best to help the community

told Patch why he should represent the 6th Assembly District
NY — Suffolk County residents will be lining up at the polls for Election Day on Nov
where they will be voting for candidates who align with own their values
is running for New York State's 6th Assembly District
He will face incumbent Assemblyman Phil Ramos
The 6th State Assembly District covers Bay Shore
Patch reached out to both candidates to hear where they stand on important issues affecting the community
Here are the responses for those who participated
The answers have been lightly edited for clarity
https://www.surdifornewyork.co...
Master's degree in business administration and a bachelor's degree of science in Nursing
20+ years experience in emergency medicine
where I specialize in organizational and leadership development consulting
I have been married to my wonderful wife for eight years
and we are blessed with three incredible children
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government
This district has been misrepresented for over 20 years
After seeing the most recent actions from the current representative
I am running to bring back the representation this community deserves
I have served the communities and families throughout Long Island for nearly 20 years
I plan on continuing my service to those communities by fighting as your representative for New York's 6th Assembly District
“Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer
Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past
Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.”
I have dedicated my life to the service of others
I began my career as an EMT working in the NYC 911 system
continued to care for the health of the community as a registered nurse in the emergency departments across Long Island
and later impacted greater change in healthcare as an administrator of emergency nursing
I also own a consulting business where I train organizations that include
and many health care organizations across the country
All of those skills need to be brought to Albany
I attended Cathedral Prep Seminary High School in Elmhurst NY
where I considered becoming a Catholic priest
I then obtained my Bachelor's degree in Nursing from Molloy College in Rockville Centre
I was the community service representative of the student government
I raised and donated thousands of dollars through fundraisers to healthcare research
financially struggling American communities
and even donated much needed pediatric medical supplies to a war torn country in dire need; in addition to many other community service projects over 4 years
I completed my Master’s degree in Business Administration from Grand Canyon University
I want our children to grow up with a government they can trust
I do not want them to grow up and see their government fighting over party politics rather than serving the people they represent
I want to show them how to stand up for what is right
with both parents being elementary school teachers
The seven of us shared a two-bedroom apartment in Glendale
where we learned the value of family and hard work
I personally understand the struggles of lower income and middle-class families
We lost our home to flooding during hurricane Sandy and
lost our father to his 10-year battle with prostate cancer
These are lessons I will not forget while serving as your Assemblyman
we can continue to be the greatest nation on Earth
I will make certain your voice is heard in your government
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post
I am an ER Nurse and former EMT that has dedicated my life to community service
and small business owner that has been both personally and professionally affected by disastrous Albany policies my opponent has supported and continues to support
I am a family man that just wants what is best for our families and our community
My opponent has been in office for 22 years
I am completely against all covid related mandates
My opponent actively seeks to defund the police
he supports letting criminals back onto the street to harm our families
he has no intention of leaving office - even after serving 22 years; he even ran for two seats at the same time
He fully supports keeping our children and toddlers in masks and forcing unnecessary and potentially harmful vaccines on them
I am an ER Nurse that fought in the ER and ICU all during the pandemic
I know how to properly protect and care for our community
in what way has the current officeholder failed the community

pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder in the December 2011 deaths of his ex-girlfriend Shakeela Planter
A North Bay Shore man was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison Wednesday
minutes after he asked his ex-girlfriend's family to forgive him for killing her and her 23-month-old son
Lewis spoke in a low whisper as he addressed Shakeela Planter's family
who were sitting in the Riverhead courtroom
"I will never forgive somebody like that," said her father, Winston Planter, 49, of Massachusetts
had admitted that he stabbed Shakeela Planter
Prosecutors have said Lewis killed Planter when he found out she was seeing another man
even though their brief relationship was already over
Authorities said Lewis wrapped both bodies in plastic and put the boy in the freezer. He stayed at the house with the bodies for three days, then drove to Maryland and confessed to his mother and sister
told the court that after her daughter moved from Jamaica to the United States in 2009
she worked two jobs to save money so she could one day earn her doctoral degree
"Shakeela trusted Jerry with her life and also the life of Jaiden Planter
and that was her only mistake," her mother said
State Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro imposed the sentence agreed to in a plea deal
while Lewis appeared polite and contrite in the courtroom
"your actions revealed that you are a monster."
Lewis received two second-degree murder sentences of 15 years to life to run consecutively and a first-degree murder sentence of 25 years to life to run concurrent to both of those
Winston Planter read a letter he wrote to the parole board
he said he didn't recognize his daughter because she had been stabbed in the face so many times
"I will never forget the day at the morgue when I could only identify my sweet
firstborn daughter by a little mark she had on her toe," he said
Planter's parents said they have endured many sleepless nights
"Some days I literally have to pinch myself to make sure it's not just a bad dream," Winston Planter said
"It's still hard to believe that this is real
that this really happened," adding they will never again hear the voices of Shakeela or Jaiden
He also lamented that the death penalty was not available in New York State
saying that the best he could hope for is for Lewis to spend the rest of his life in prison and not be released on parole
"I don't believe anyone who can commit such an evil act can be rehabilitated," he said
and what information we do have points toward a sustainable
and future-proof headquarters for the company
In contrast with the forbidding closed loop design of Apple's sustainable Cupertino campus by Norman Foster
"We're really making sure that we make spaces very open and accessible
so it's not just for Googlers but for anyone in the area to come by," says David Radcliffe
Intended for the North Bay Shore area of Mountain View
the renders evoke more of a futuristic college campus feel than that of a secretive technology center
and it comprises a number of buildings with large transparent roofs that allow plenty of natural light
The renders also show a mash-up of both Ingels' and Heatherwick's style in places (such as the above image
and it will be interesting to see if the end result will be a clash of egos or that of two "starchitects" complimenting each other's strengths
and cyclists are offered shelter from the rain in some areas with large solar canopies
Google says a significant portion of the HQ's energy needs will be met sustainably
nor of any other sustainable tech in the works
Car parks are hidden from sight underground
and the renders show a focus on landscaping in a concerted effort to offer visitors and staff a greater connection with nature
Another potentially interesting but vague nugget of information revealed is that the headquarters will apparently be flexible and future-proof
"Instead of constructing immoveable concrete buildings
we’ll create lightweight block-like structures which can be moved around easily as we invest in new product areas," added Radcliffe
we could infer anything from a novel system of movable buildings to simply easily-dismantled prefabs that can be extended when required
The video below features Radcliffe and both architects talking a little about the design

and Waikiki is far from the only — or even best — beach on the island
that's no shade intended toward Waikiki
as the destination is rich in history and has much to offer
But you are missing out on a lot of what makes Oahu special if that's the only slice of it you experience
my family decided that we wanted something different from the Oahu we'd experienced before
bound for Oahu's North Shore and the area's nicest accommodations — Turtle Bay Resort
Here's what we found hiding in plain sight on the island's North Shore
Related: These are the best resorts on Oahu
A post shared by The Points Guy (@thepointsguy)
Turtle Bay Resort is the only true large resort on Oahu's North Shore
and it's an institution unto itself as it has been there for over 50 years — since 1972
It sits on a massive 1,400 beachfront acres and has 408 rooms spread out over three wings
you may very well encounter green sea turtles there
or at least some of its surrounding terrain
as it's been used over 150 times as a filming location for movies and shows — "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Hunger Games," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Lost," "Jumanji" and "The Amazing Race," to name a few
This resort leans into its surf culture history
both through its decor and its modern-day offerings
including the on-site Jamie O'Brien Surf Experience
Turtle Bay Resort is pricey, but the good news is that it is part of the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program, which makes that a great pathway to book if you have The Platinum Card® from American Express
Booking via the FHR program unlocks late checkout
a daily breakfast credit of $110 and a $150 property credit to use once during your stay
Expect to spend about $700 per night (before taxes and the $58.99-per-day resort fee) for standard rooms that are a bit over 400 square feet
know that parking is an additional $40 per day
and valet parking and self-parking are the same price
you almost certainly want to rent a car to get here if you plan to do any exploring at all
Turtle Bay Resort is on the beach of Oahu's North Shore
about a one-hour drive (longer if there's traffic) from Daniel K
Turtle Bay had an interesting vibe as there was a large contingent of adults that appeared to be there for a multiday conference
but also plenty of families like us that were there on spring break
There are multiple shops and a spa on-site — but also offerings for families
kids were welcomed right from the start with a visit to the treasure chest of toys next to the check-in desk
Because of the large and relatively outdoor nature of the resort
it can comfortably cater to both adults and families at the same time
The one group that I don't think would be best suited here is rowdy nightlife seekers
And while I could see some groups potentially creating their own party at the adults-only pool or lobby bar
this isn't really the kind of place that you go for exciting nightlife
Let's now head up to a room with a view — which I think all the rooms at Turtle Bay have due to its unique footprint out on this point
Our room with two queen beds was absolutely ideal for my two kids and me
solid soundproofing and a balcony overlooking the water
Previous slideNext slide1 of 6SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY012345The air conditioning was top-notch at keeping the room cool
which I never take for granted on an island
the room had a minifridge and there was a set of table and chairs
which is obviously super handy for easy meals in the room or even doing a little work
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01The bathroom had a nice entryway with a closet
bench and plenty of space for luggage or to get ready
there was a separate bathroom area with the toilet and shower
Previous slideNext slide1 of 4SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY0123Included and add-on activitiesWhile Turtle Bay does have a resort fee of close to $60 per day
you'll find a list of daily activities such as lei-making
The trick to this is that many of the activities have limited capacity and do fill up
so you will need to plan in advance if you want to take advantage of all that is offered
know that some of the experiences listed do have an additional fee
so don't just assume everything on the board is free
The one activity we booked and paid for on our short trip was a horse trail ride
There are a number of horse rides available
ranging from pony rides for the littlest riders to pricier private sunset rides
that lasted about 45 minutes and cost $115 per person (before tip)
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01We walked along the coastline and through the forest a bit on well-trained horses that only occasionally would try and go for some green
kind and instructive when something like that would happen
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01Bike ridesBikes were complimentary and a great way to get around
though technically only available for 45-minute rentals
Golf carts are also available as a way to traverse the massive property
they are only available to use when going to or from a booked activity
The Nalu Spa at Turtle Bay was a big highlight for me
It was not overly fancy and had a relaxing open-air waiting area where you could listen to the ocean
I was able to book a same-day 30-minute massage
What made me feel good pulling the trigger is that while it was expensive
the price wasn't inflated for being shorter than the standard massage
it was a full treatment that came with access to all the same amenities as the longer
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01I adored my 30 minutes in the open-air treatment room with a masseuse who was great at checking in on pressure and really made the most of the short time we had by focusing on exactly what I asked for
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01Fitness classes and gymTurtle Bay has a large gym and a separate fitness studio
The fitness classes range from high-intensity interval training to yoga
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01Nature centerAt the resort
you'll find a really informative nature center with educational displays about the area
It's a small but unusual (in a good way) offering and absolutely worth a visit
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01ShopsThere are about a half-dozen (mostly higher-end) shops at Turtle Bay — my favorite was the Surf House
Whether you want to play traditional golf or disc golf
The resort has not one but two 18-hole golf courses — the Arnold Palmer Course claims to be the No
we saw an expansive course near the stables
families will likely really appreciate the on-site laundry that guests can access (there are easy-to-operate coin machines in the room) to get everything clean
We were grateful to be able to use them before heading to the next stop on our trip
If you haven't noticed by now from some of the photos
we did not hit the weather lottery while on Oahu's North Shore
While this type of weather can happen anywhere
my experience is that it does happen more on the northern shore than in some other parts of the island
so I'd consider it a higher risk here
This meant that our time at the pools and at the beach wasn't as extensive as it would have been if we'd had better weather
Even though we didn't use them very much
Turtle Bay has three on-site pools that are layered in a way that makes each feel distinct from the others: the main pool
the kids pool with a waterslide and the adults-only pool
The only pool that was ever busy during our stay was the adults-only pool
which was filled in the afternoon and early evening with conferencegoers
Previous slideNext slide1 of 5SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01234My 8-year-old slide tester gave the waterslide a thumbs-up
while the hot tub in the adults-only pool area looked lovely
the one on the main pool level looked like there was a bit more film and/or scum in it and wasn't very inviting to me
there was included reef-safe sunscreen available for use
The Turtle Bay Resort is located on the beach
where you'll find complimentary beach chairs
However, the Kuilima Cove beach that is directly next to the hotel is not the only beach. In fact, the Turtle Bay website lists seven beaches that you can walk to from the resort
Previous slideNext slide1 of 5SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01234Kawela Bay is a little over a mile from the hotel
and was my favorite of the bunch as a calm bay that wasn't very busy during my visits
This is also where they hold a lot of the surf lessons
the bistro just off the lobby where you can get your coffee
which is great for those jet-lagged mornings the first few days in Hawaii
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01We really enjoyed the pineapple coconut muffin — just budget accordingly
as breakfast for myself and two kids was at least $40 here
even when we were ordering very conservatively
Previous slideNext slide1 of 2SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01SunsetAn easy spot to eat outdoors — and enjoy the sunset — is the aptly named Sunset restaurant
but despite costing about $135 for two kids and me
Previous slideNext slide1 of 3SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY012Beach House by Roy YamaguchiAfter that first meal at Sunset
I was worried that the food at Turtle Bay wouldn't be a highlight of the trip
that first impression wasn't representative of the whole
Our lunch the next day at Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi was excellent
even the children's meal ($19) was thoughtfully presented in three courses
including a cute salad and quesadilla starter
This open-air restaurant is just off the beach and is an absolute star that we all loved
Make reservations in advance on OpenTable to ensure you get a spot here
Previous slideNext slide1 of 3SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY012AlaiaThe fanciest restaurant at Turtle Bay is likely Alaia
We tried both breakfast and dinner here — and this is where you'd use your Amex FHR breakfast credit if you booked via that program
Some standout items we had were the focaccia bread with whipped butter that came with dinner
the kids meal that was served in another three-course style with a crudite starter
a main of our choosing (we went with chicken) and ice cream for dessert
but it wouldn't go far if you were really hungry
Previous slideNext slide1 of 6SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY012345Previous slideNext slide1 of 3SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY012While our visit wasn't long enough to try it all
Lei Lei's Bar & Grill and The Beach Club
there is a Paniolo Luau near the stables that starts at $195 for adults and $120 for kids 4-12 (3 and under are free)
Service was always kind and helpful at Turtle Bay
if you asked about an activity and the staff member said it was full
they wouldn't proactively suggest other ones or check for the next day
It was more of a transactional question-and-answer-style interaction
It's worth mentioning that there is a great valet system where you can scan a QR code on your ticket when you're ready for your car
which immediately texts for your car to be brought around
even though it didn't turn out to be a pool-and-beach type of trip
so here are some reasons it might not be for you
Turtle Bay has a very detailed website of offerings when it comes to accessibility.
Highlights include 16 different accessible rooms, including one ocean bungalow, with door ramps to the balcony, grab bars in the bathroom, and lower towel bars and robe hooks.
The resort also has transfer systems for the pools and hot tubs, accessible entrances to all of the restaurants and bars, and more.
I'm a big fan of Hawaii's different north shores, and this one was no exception. It can be easy for first-timers to assume that Waikiki is the place to be on Oahu, but I'd say once you have experienced it, it's time to explore more of the island, and heading north is a great way to do that.
Previous slideNext slide1 of 5SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY01234While Oahu's North Shore is certainly becoming more commercialized and tourist-driven, it still feels much more authentic to Hawaii than some other parts that are lined with resort after resort.
Turtle Bay is a way to have a taste of the best of both worlds — the amenities and comforts of a large resort just a short drive away from small towns and true surf culture.
