Athens’ departure leaves the City with less than two and a half months to secure alternative solutions In a statement to the community the City of San Marino clarified that it did not ask Athens to abandon the community Negotiations between the City and Athens had been ongoing since 2021 with both parties working toward an agreement that would ensure affordable high-quality services while complying with new state regulations Despite the City’s commitment to countless hours of negotiation to reach a fair deal Athens walked away when the City refused to accept unreasonable price increases and a reduction in protections for residents The withdrawal of Athens Services has raised concerns among residents particularly due to Athens’ decision to terminate street cleaning services—an issue that was not part of the negotiations City officials have expressed their frustration accusing Athens of spreading misinformation and using punitive tactics against the community “Athens decision to terminate street cleaning services which have not been a part of the negotiations demonstrates Athens desire to punish the community of San Marino,” said the City in a statement “Athens has been spreading misinformation among the residents Athens has chosen to take the further aggressive tactic of filing a claim for damages against the City for our efforts in attempting good faith negotiations with them.” the City has already begun negotiations with other waste haulers to ensure services continue uninterrupted if Athens does not reconsider A key priority is maintaining the City’s unique backyard trash collection service model which has been a hallmark of waste management in San Marino While the City acknowledges the challenges posed by Athens’ departure officials stated they are working diligently to protect the community’s interests and ensure that future waste services meet both budgetary needs and quality expectations “The City is sincerely disappointed Athens has resorted to these unreasonable and threatening tactics,” the City’s statement said “We are committed to doing everything we can to protect our community.” Residents and businesses are advised that no action is needed at this time In a letter dated March 26 from Athens to the City Manager of San Marino Athens refuted the City’s online statement and email asserting that the City had falsely accused Athens of “abandoning” San Marino Athens argued that these statements are defamatory and demanded the City retract them immediately the City and Athens agreed to extend their long-standing franchise agreement which included a termination clause if negotiations failed after a year Athens exercised this right after the City repeatedly failed to negotiate in good faith and lacked the competence to implement a required program Athens asserted that it did not “walk out” of negotiations but made reasonable counterproposals while the City failed to meet The letter further criticized the City’s attempt to blame Athens for the failed negotiations [This article has been updated to include Athens’ letter disputing the assertions made by the City of San Marino in its statement.] Many of our advertisers are local businesses that have been impacted directly by the fire we immediately removed all advertisements the day after the fire and transformed our site to every student can reach their full potential Junior Tess Censoni (center) has dual citizenship in San Marino and the United States When Junior Tess Censoni’s great-grandmother fled from San Marino she could have never imagined her great-granddaughter would one day return to advocate for her own Sammarinese citizenship Censoni has visited San Marino twice through a government program meant to connect Sammarinese-American citizens to their heritage so it took a long time for my citizenship to come through.” Censoni said she was finally able to travel to San Marino for the first time this summer “The trip that I went on this summer is called the ‘Soggiorni Culturali,’ meaning ‘culture says’” Censoni said “It’s basically the cultural journey or the cultural stay it’s a big part of their foreign affairs program to keep citizens coming back.” Censoni was selected as the American representative to travel back to San Marino in the fall The purpose was for Censoni to advocate for the Sanmarinese government to continue funding the program “I prepared a speech about my trip in the summer,” she said “I explained how it had deepened my connection with the country the relationships I built on it with both my family there and with the other dual citizens from around the world.” For dual citizens there are “communitas,” or communities that foster opportunities for members to build their Sammarinese heritage around the world “My communitas in Detroit kept me connected with the culture growing up,” Censoni said The president of the San Marino Detroit Communitas said San Marino is the smallest and oldest republic in the world and the communities around the world are meant to engage San Marinesei of their heritage “These communities were founded in 1979 with the mission to maintain culture and rights of dual citizenship,” Giulianelli said “Our mission is to always maintain ties with the motherland of the Republic of San Marino harmony and unity in each country of residency.” four outstanding participants are selected to return to San Marino in October to represent their respective communities Censoni was selected to represent the Detroit communitas to attend the conference called the “The Consulta.” “The Consulta is a three-day international meeting of the presidents and delegates of each Sammarinese Community abroad with the San Marino Department of Foreign Affairs,” Giulianelli said “On the third day each of the four selected participants spoke — in Italian — in the presence of the entire assembly regarding their experience during the Cultural Stay program and its significance as it relates to their Sammarinese heritage as a citizen abroad Giulianelli said that Censoni represented the community well and communicated the significance of the program to those at the conference “It is with great importance to each of us San Marino citizens living abroad that we maintain our culture and traditions in our individual communities,” Giulianelli said “We strive to maintain our sense of Sammarinesita’ (patriotism) passing on these cultural ties to the motherland for generations to come Censoni said her paternal great-grandmother told stories of their family’s heritage throughout her childhood I heard about the country a lot,” Censoni said “My grandpa would pick me up on Mondays after school and he would just tell me stories about our family.” inspired many school projects to honor her great-grandmother my great-grandma would cook dinner for the English soldiers there every night,” Censoni said “When a soldier died and no longer would come there she would just move the soldier’s stuff away and not say anything about it.” Censoni said her great-grandmother never forgot how much World War II changed things they poisoned so much of the land there that the only reason my family survived was because those English soldiers left some of their rations behind,” Censoni said The program has been contested by the Sammarinese government due to the undefined rights associated with dual citizenship and according to Censoni some members of Parliament are looking to address this issue “They need to prove that the program is necessary the citizens abroad can dramatically impact the elections,” Censoni said “There’s a lot of debate about the voting rights since there are a lot of citizens who don’t reside within the country’s borders.” nothing was officially decided in Parliament but she was fascinated by the government procedures “There were many different groups with so many different opinions so it would be hard to see how there are clear avenues of actual change,” Censoni said Censoni said the program also provided her with a special opportunity to have relationships with her family members living in San Marino I’ve gotten to spend enough time with my cousins to have personal relationships with them,” Censoni said and having communities across the world that you just show up and they welcome you is really cool.” Junior Addison Randel said Censoni’s dedication and pride in her family heritage has always been very important to her even before being allowed into the Soggiorni program “I can see how she lights up whenever she talks about her heritage,” Randel said “I’ve watched Tess put in an incredible amount of work to prepare herself for her speech She took a grueling crash course in Italian so that she could represent her family well in front of Parliament.” While Censoni’s family heritage was transplanted into the U.S. the memory and sacrifices of Agostina Censoni have created a rich legacy “Growing up my great-grandmother was the most welcoming person she would come and cook for us,” Censoni said saying ‘that was a grandma Gusta thing to do.’” Courtesy | Avedis Maljanian My Picture by REUTERS/Alberto LingriaBy Matt NelsenLosing is a fact of life for athletes. Regardless of age, skill level or talent, an athlete is bound to suffer at least one defeat in their career. Losing rarely defines the identity of a team, but for the "Titani" - San Marino’s Men’s National Football Team - it was a fact of life for more than 20 years. Yes, the boys in sky blue and white went an astonishing 140 matches without a single win. There were moments of brilliance and near triumph in between defeats, but the Titani earned a reputation as one of the world’s worst national teams. Even their most steadfast supporters, the "Brigata Mai 1 Gioia," which translates to the “Never Any Joy Brigade,” were keenly aware of the team’s unfortunate losing streak. Nevertheless, years of heartbreak, anguish and dimming hope were ceremoniously dismissed by midfielder Nicko Sensoli, when he scored the winning goal in San Marino’s match against Liechtenstein at Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle, San Marino on 5 September. The victory made headlines around the world and brought a sense of undeniable joy to the small nation located entirely inside Italy. It was a feeling the team, their fellow countrymen and supporters around the world hadn’t felt in years. However, one lingering question remained: could the Titani taste victory once more this season? There was a real buzz in the air amongst supporters of the team that victory might be within the grasp of the Titani at the start of the year. A pair of friendly matches against Saint Kitts and Nevis caught the attention of football fans far and wide, but victory evaded the Titani once more. While the boys in sky blue and white suffered further defeats against Slovakia and Cyprus in June, extending their losing streak to 140 matches, the ever-familiar faint glimmer of hope began to take root within the steadfast supporters of San Marino’s national team, as a UEFA Nations League match against Liechtenstein loomed on the horizon. Was victory possible for the Titani, or would it be yet another heartbreaking loss to extend the infamous losing streak? It’s why I’m so passionate. We all deserved to be a part of this moment.” For the first time in 20 years, the world’s worst national team felt like they were on top of the world. But for San Marino, those two decades of hurt made the joy of Thursday's 1-0 win over Liechtenstein even more special The concept of the long-suffering fan has become something of a cliché in football but supporters of San Marino's national football team can legitimately consider themselves the longest suffering of all surrounded entirely by Italy -- one of men's international football's most successful nations -- had amassed the unenviable record of going two decades without a win The team's last victory came in a friendly against Liechtenstein in 2004 That track record has left the Titani propping up the FIFA World Ranking Hindered by the fact that the vast majority of their games are against UEFA sides there are few fixtures they have any chance of winning None of this put off San Marino's unique group of ultras the "Brigata Mai 1 Gioia" (Never Any Joy Brigade.) Hailing mainly from Italy they cheer on San Marino at every home game and many away games since they were formed in 2004 priding themselves on the fact they had never seen their heroes win But San Marino had quietly been showing some promise. In their Euro 2024 qualification campaign, San Marino scored goals in three consecutive games against some relatively illustrious opposition in the form of Denmark, Kazakhstan and Finland A goal at any stage of any game for San Marino prompts a pitch invasion and scenes of jubilation but slowly it had started to become less of a shock San Marino led against their Caribbean visitors Kitts and Nevis triumphed 3-1 and then a 0-0 draw in the second game did nothing to quench the Sammarinesi's thirst for a win the Nations League has been a blessing as it provides regular competitive matches against teams at their level So when they were paired with Liechtenstein the only team they had previously beaten and a side on their own winless run of 39 games this was clearly the standout chance for glory Games at the Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle often play out in a sedate atmosphere with those in attendance lulled by a sense of the inevitable but on Thursday there was a different mood swelled by a large contingent of children from a soccer school was noticeably larger than in recent games even if it was nowhere near the ground's 6,600 capacity There was a sense that this could be their night and after half an hour Fabio Luque Notaro took advantage of a lapse in the Sammarinese defence to slot home for the visitors just as the hope began to drain from the home crowd VAR intervened to rule the goal out for offside and soon after half-time their big moment arrived Nicko Sensoli ran through on goal and took advantage of Liechtenstein's goalkeeper Benjamin Büchel's indecision to poke the ball home and etch his name into Titani history forever Goal-scorer Nicko Sensoli was not even born when San Marino sealed their only previous win 20 years ago. FSGC/PruccoliWith San Marino in the unusual position of being in front the tension mounted and became unbearable for the fans who had waited so long As seven minutes of injury time were announced their players fell to their knees due to the enormity of their achievement The stadium's PA announcer repeatedly bellowed "San Marino 1-0 Liechtenstein," unable to maintain even a veneer of neutrality in the face of such a momentous result "It was the perfect evening," Cevoli said postmatch "We scored a goal and we could have scored more I'm so happy for the players and for the federation San Marino match winner Sensoli was not even born when Andy Selva scored that fateful goal in San Marino's last win over Liechtenstein making only his fourth senior international appearance has now taken his country a step further by claiming the team's first-ever victory in a competitive match "It was an incredible feeling [to score]," he said managed to score and bring the result home all the staff and to everyone from San Marino." The San Marino ultras might have to change their group name now that they have actually witnessed a victory for their team. FSGC/PierinIn the stands, there was bedlam for the assortment of followers who have adopted San Marino in a desire to root for the ultimate underdog.
