The 2,400-square-foot oceanfront Elite suite includes two bedrooms, a private lanai, an extensive wine bar, a personal assistant, a Peloton bike and so much more. This suite averages $16,500 per night. The Mossbacher men spent much of their vacation getting scuba-certified. As a viewer, I thought that there was no way you could actually do that at the property. Turns out, it's a real experience the resort offers. While I didn't have the time to take the class, I did see a group of guests in the pool with their gear. The experience lasts 2 1/2 hours, will cost you $193 and has a few other requirements you must meet to participate. Don't get it twisted: While the show centers around families and couples, this is very much a versatile and welcoming resort for all travelers. Riding solo myself, I found the hotel to be extremely safe and welcoming, both in my room and throughout the property. When it came to the restaurants, I never felt lonely because every staff member I encountered made a point to make me feel welcome. It's worth noting that the staff at Four Seasons Maui at Wailea showed me more kindness and compassion than I have ever experienced at any other resort. I wanted to take the time to talk to each of them and learn about their lives and how we, as visitors, can experience Maui responsibly and respectfully. (The resort even had the option to add a donation to your bill to support the Lahaina recovery from the devastating 2023 fire.) While my stay was beyond luxurious and rejuvenating, I left Four Seasons Maui at Wailea feeling a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation for what makes a resort not good, but great: the staff serving as the glue that holds it all together. Just like in "The White Lotus." This concept of feeling welcome is the essence of Wailea. The unique and luxurious master-planned luxury residential resort community was built around the notion that there is a place for everyone. From five-star resort properties to luxury condominiums you feel at home as soon as you pass the threshold into Wailea it was as if I had been transported to a tropical oasis Native Hawaiian flora and fauna surrounded me as I drove deeper into the community to get to my hotel shading us from the sun and creating a jungle-like scene with glimpses of the lapis blue coastline peeking through the plants The community of Wailea is unique in that it consists of people coming together to create a harmonious community that shares a love and appreciation for the beauty of Wailea and its five crescent beaches Upon arrival at my first destination, The Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort a Hawaiian tradition to symbolize friendship and greeting The lobby was an open-concept breezeway with lush green flora and fauna throughout integrating the tropical paradise with the building’s interior I was told about the hotel’s heritage The property was originally owned by Takeshi Sekiguchi The Grand Wailea was Sekiguchi’s passion project he was a man who always got what he wanted Sekiguchi incorporated gems throughout the property, such as the chapel in the gardens. The chapel was built in the 1990s and now serves as a stunning venue for events and weddings. The stained-glass windows were commissioned by the artist Yvonne Cheng who Sekiguchi sent to Italy for two years to learn the craft Cheng is also responsible for creating the stunning mosaic Hibiscus Pool which comprises more than one million tiles Another notable sight to see on the property is a replica of Sakiguchi’s favorite Japanese Tea House All the materials were imported to keep the building’s authenticity Fuji were imported and reassembled to the exact formation they were before they were taken A detail that cost Sekiguchi a pretty penny Once I was settled, I stopped at the sushi restaurant and bar, Botero Lounge, named after the famous artist Fernando Botero, who Sekiguchi was fond of, so much so that there are nine sculptures of Botero’s showcased throughout the property with values ranging from $20 to $50 million Botero Lounge is the hub for people to sit back and relax while indulging in delicious sushi and live music Large plush turquoise chairs line the bar and a grand lantern chandelier hangs above the ceiling a fresh cocktail made with Ocean Organic Vodka—distilled locally in Hawaii—fresh lime juice It was just the refreshment I needed after my long flight I spent the evening taking in my surroundings; I ordered two sushi rolls I loved watching the chef make my food in front of me The feeling of the warm sand under my feet rhythmic swell of the water crashing onto the shore I woke up the following day and had a complimentary breakfast buffet at the Napua Lounge The Napua Club Lounge offers free cocktail services and light bites from 4 p.m Staying in a Napua room comes with a premium enjoying my chocolate croissant and coffee and listened to the birds singing in the palms I strolled with the general manager and marketing coordinator around the property before my much-needed spa appointment The path was lined with fresh trees growing various fruits and foods from cacao trees to mango trees and everything in between It was said that the fruit tends to be picked by guests staying on the property when ripe I was lucky to try a ripe cherry directly off the tree; it was the juiciest and sweetest cherry I have ever had I was escorted upstairs to take a peek at the crème de la crème of their accommodation options three-bathroom room boasts incredible 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean It features upgraded interiors such as marble bathrooms and lavish furnishings and is decorated with museum-quality artwork This impressive room was the creative product of Nina Chiappa Interiors and perfectly combines residential luxury with resort living The Napua Grand Suite also includes full access to the Napua Lounge YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: WELLNESS WITHIN | HAWAII’S BEST SPA I checked into the Grand Wailea’s ICONIC Kilolani Spa which recently opened its doors early 2024 The 50,000-square-foot luxury wellness spa underwent a $44 million renovation to become one of the best destination spas in the world The Kilolani Spa has more than 40 treatment rooms and a menu of more than 37 wellness and beauty treatments a tradition ancient Hawaiians used to navigate through the night Guests are encouraged to arrive an hour before their appointment to unwind and indulge in the amenities of the hydrotherapy gardens an al fresco bathhouse experience with cooling and hydrotherapy features The features include a saltwater vitality pool a massive eucalyptus-infused steam room with a beautiful sculpture grounded in the center Important note: Guests who book the wellness rooms have full access to the hydrotherapy garden throughout their stay I was taken to a dark and tranquil room with a massive black rock tub filled with sea salt to set my intentions for the day I then pinched salt water from the bowl and tossed droplets over each shoulder a tradition the cultural director set as the proper way to enter the spa I enjoyed all the spa’s hydrotherapy amenities My massage therapist escorted me to my room which uses heated lava and salt stones with traditional Lomilomi massage techniques I left my treatment with no tension in my body I had a reservation at the famous Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa restaurant an elevated bungalow-style steak and seafood restaurant I sat at their newly renovated aquarium bar top You could look down and see fish swimming underneath your dinner and cocktails The Chef de Cuisine, Ryan Urig a beautiful seafood tower and tuna carpaccio were presented followed by fresh swordfish and the day’s catch on a bed of sea rice I ended my incredible dinner with a trio of desserts It’s safe to say I left that dinner with a full stomach and a happy heart I had an early start to my morning; I went snorkeling with Kai Kanani a family-owned sailing excursion company that offers snorkeling The friendly staff explained the expectations to the group before we did a beach load from the shore of Makena Beach an old volcanic crater now a prime snorkeling spot The crew gave us orange juice and cinnamon rolls before our first dive setting a relaxed and comfortable tone for the day I was surrounded by a rainbow of fish and live coral The fish were as curious about us as we were with them We spent 45 minutes exploring the crater before we loaded back onto the boat for our second stop; the crew offered us coffee and hot chocolate Our second stop was a cove with exposed lava rock When we swam out to our guide and looked into the water Two massive sea turtles were swimming below us One came up to the surface and flashed us a smile before swimming to the coral below I had never felt so connected to the ocean until that moment observing some of the planet’s most beautiful creatures unbothered and right in front of me the crew offered us a full breakfast with an open bar a luxurious catering service I had not expected to receive on this excursion I ordered a mimosa and relaxed as we made our way back to shore The five-star crew and service that came with the snorkeling experience is unparalleled If you are looking for something fun to do while in Maui while still receiving luxury treatment YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: EXPLORE OAHU’S BEST: A GUIDE TO STAY, SHOP AND SAVOR IN HAWAII’S DIVERSE ISLAND PARADISE I checked out of the Grand Wailea and into the Fairmont Kea Lani another Wailea resort that underwent a complete renovation The all-white resort looked angelic in the distance The phrase Kea Lani translates to heavenly white and it is a testament to traditional Hawaiian architectural influences The concept of the Kea Lani began in 1986 with architect Jose Luis Ezquerra Ezquerra and his team were eager to imbue Hawaiian eccentricity into their work so he worked to emulate and combine the best properties of two historic Hawaiian properties The Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Iolani Palace By drawing inspiration from the shape of The Royal Hawaiian Palace and the white coloring of Iolani Palace Kea Lani is now its own architectural masterpiece The large open lobby featured stunning Fluid circular arches and mesh waterfalls in the center under a massive monkey pod wood atrium so the natural greenery of the plants and scenery acted as the accent color The lobby emanates tranquil energy and a clean seamlessly incorporating the materials of the landscape into the beautiful design of the hotel Scattered throughout the property is the work of the famous wood carver Dale Zarrella Intricate sculptures depicting sea turtles and mermaids emphasize the importance of the ocean and Hawaiian mythology and folklore Eager to explore the pulchritudinous property which led me to the outdoor pools and gardens I reached the Fairmont Kea Lani’s poolside restaurant The Ama Bar and Grill offers stunning ocean views from every table I enjoyed a delicious orange Ama’s Passion cocktail while enjoying the view of the beach below I snacked on the Ahi wonton chips and the poke bowl wasabi aioli and avocado on a bed of white rice It was the perfect meal to hold me over until my dinner at Pilina My suite had a beautiful coastal chic aesthetic ocean blue accent rug and dining table greeted me at the door which had décor that emulated the materials and properties of the Hawaiian mountains and beaches The tile bathroom featured his-and-her sinks and was stocked with Le Labo products Motion sensor linear lighting was also incorporated which I greatly appreciated as a nod to sustainability Larger beachside two-and-three-bedroom villas are also available for booking; elevated coastal interiors a loft and a private plunge pool accompany each villa This accommodation is perfect for families I took a Hawaiian language class at Hale Kukuna I learned the Hawaiian alphabet and common phrases and the enriching history of the Hawaiian language which was illegal to speak until the 1990s Hale Kukuna boasts a collection of Hawaiian artifacts instruments and tools in a beautiful display designed to enhance people’s understanding of and appreciation of the land’s native people Multiple culturally enriching classes and activities happen throughout the day I checked in for my dinner reservation at Pilina the Fairmont Kea Lani’s magnificent lobby cocktail bar and restaurant A beautifully carved Monkeypod wood archway leads to a sizable spiraling wood centerpiece welcoming you into the restaurant unobstructed views of the sunset reflected by the ocean await you Warm woods and earthy accent colors fill the space creating an open lounge and relaxing atmosphere The melody of an acoustic guitar adds grace and movement to the atmosphere The restaurant was absolutely breathtaking I ordered an array of their signature cocktails Arabian Jasmine and champagne served in a classic martini glass recommended a few signature sushi rolls and hot rocks Cooking my fish on the hot stones added another entertainment element to my experience I couldn’t help but gaze at the couple’s sushi boat beside me A colorful platter of fresh fish and greens adorned a small wood sailboat I started off with a full-body Molokai lemongrass salt scrub to exfoliate the dead skin and impurities off my body The scrub was then followed by a Kava aloe body mask to hydrate the skin from the inside out Hawaiian ti leaves were then wrapped around my body I had an Awapuhi honey and lemon hair mask massaged into my scalp I hopped in the shower to rinse off the clay mask and salt scrub; my skin felt smooth and revived I nestled back onto the massage bed for a one-hour massage with Maui vanilla cocoa and coconut butter I did what most would do: I b-lined it to the bar where I enjoyed a playful cocktail in a pineapple the Fairmont Kea Lani’s signature restaurant I put the chef in charge of my meal once more He started me off with the Lau Lau dish: fresh seafood wrapped in ti leaves and soaked in a shoyu-coconut milk sauce The sweet and savory combination was fantastic He then served the fresh catch on a bed of taro risotto and garnished it with various vegetables The symphony of flavors danced on my palate I woke early to experience the Fairmont Kea Lani’s canoe excursion we paddled into Maui’s turquoise waters in a Hawaiian outrigger canoe We pushed the 450-pound canoe into the water and paddled out This culturally enriching experience is complimentary for registered hotel guests; you only have to book a spot before your stay Before my flight home, I treated myself to a quick round of golf at the Wailea Golf Club a luxurious golf course and training academy Whether you want to play a few rounds of golf on one of their three resort of Piilani Highway and delineated with black hash marks The Maui Planning Commission may have a final vote on a proposed 650-acre development in Wailea when it convenes Tuesday after early indications suggested commissioners weren’t going to pass it at their last meeting on March 11 With a minimum quorum of five members during a discussion in early March Commissioner Mark Deakos indicated he wasn’t going to support decreasing the number of affordable housing units from the original 700 units of workforce housing out of 1,400 units to a proposed minimum of 288 out of 1,150 units “It’s a far cry from what it was,” Deakos said the Maui County Council approved the proposed development of 14,000 units 700 of which were supposed to be workforce housing attorney for the developer Honua’ula being sent to the Maui County Council for a decision Deakos said there was convincing testimony that there’s not much support for the project He said the Maui County Council had a 5-4 vote when the Wailea project was approved in 2008 with the promise of 700 affordable units The public meeting on March 11 took about 12 hours with many testifying against the project and pointing out the proposed reduction in the number of units Commission chair Kim Thayer decided to call a recess to the meeting until March 25 Some said traffic is already bad and they are opposed to the development until a section of the Piilani Highway in the Wailea area can be widened from two lanes to four The project received support from labor unions including the Hawaii Operating Engineers Union “We support it because it provides housing,” Operating Engineers official Pane Meatoga said He added that the project will provide affordable housing quickly the Maui Division director of the International Longshore coastline of Maui the 40 acre property has played host to families anyone who wants to get away and experience the culture and traditions of Hawaii in a lush luxurious setting that flows with the spirit of aloha the whole resort exceeded my expectations and was even better it was when we visited last One of the many significant pieces of art at Grand Wailea there is so much intention put into to every detail of the property from the placement of sculptures to the selection of plants that learning the fascinating backstories makes the whole experience even richer and more meaningful It also makes you more intentional and respectful in how you interact with nature and the local people Some fun facts: in keeping with Hawaiian tradition the resort has a male side and a female side and everything is designed to keep balance and harmony There are giant rocks that were shipped straight from Mt Fuji in Japan and meticulously placed to replicate the original the unofficial state animal and a symbol of strength and resilience These are actual rocks flown in from the base of Mt The free tours give you a chance to explore Hawaii’s largest private art collection featuring more than 90 museum-quality pieces including nine larger than life Botero sculptures that I related a little too closely to after helping myself to yet another malasada at breakfast The tours also let you eat your way through the resort grounds tasting the freshest pineapple that’s ever touched your mouth and sugarcane that Heid and his team took from Hawaii’s last plantation and planted at Grand Wailea This was the second time we’ve taken these tours and they’ve added so much to our stays in addition to just being a fantastic place to vacation is a real representation and cheerleader of Hawaii It’s impossible not to be moved by all of it and we weren’t surprised to hear that many guests actually schedule their trips based on the availability of the tours Grand Wailea has upped its luxury offerings with Napua an exclusive hotel within the hotel that offers guests a dedicated concierge and lounge along with superior rooms and suites Our room was spacious and light and I loved that the king bed actually faced the spectacular view of the ocean There’s no hotel amenity I appreciate more than a good lounge and Napua is a stunner Amazing service by staff members like Patty Lei and Zenith ensures that you get what you want before you even know you want it hors d’ouevres and dessert — and I’m talking restaurant-quality food in every one of those categories — are served throughout the day smaller fridge under one of the counters that’s filled with Haagen Dazs and other ice cream treats that are especially refreshing on a hot day Elevated hors d'ouevres are served daily in the Napua Lounge was the camaraderie it inspired among guests We liked to grab one of the tables on the balcony overlooking the beautiful grounds and the ocean where we met a wonderful couple from Portland (hi Borias!) with whom we hope to stay in touch and see again next time we come we missed our dinner reservation because we were having such a good time talking to them and had to have the concierge call to apologize for us and let the restaurant know we were still coming I also had great conversations with a man from Silicon Valley in the mornings as he waited for his family to wake up and I waited for my husband to finish his daily beach walk He told me that he is a loyal Hilton Honors member who tries to save up his points for the Grand Wailea It is a very special place and it’s not surprising that guests are eager to share their enthusiasm with others who are experiencing the same joy and appreciation The breakfast buffet at 'Ikena is the perfect way to start a glorious day at Grand Wailea I especially enjoyed talking to hostess Loida whose name happens to be the Hawaiian version of mine Pools views are on the menu at Wailea Surf Haus where we indulged in lobster clubs and ahi wraps while the waterfalls provided the background music Both of the restaurants in which we had dinner were brand new. Olivine We were glad we decided to share the rich and flavorful cacio e pepe and the Kula squash blossom Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa is a unique spot for taking in the sunset over dinner Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa has completely changed its menu and décor although it’s still located under a thatched roof on prime lagoon space It almost feels like you’re eating inside an upscale of version of Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean Our seafood dinners were as fresh and tasty as if they had just been caught in the local water – because I think they were You can’t visit Maui without experiencing a luau at least once and the Grand Wailea is the place to do it. Their Grand Luau is a great way to learn more about the history and culture of the island (yes even if you’ve seen Moana) and enjoy some authentic Hawaiian foods Read my full review here Aurum Maui, a new restaurant coming to The Shops at Wailea this spring, is now hiring. to Hawaii we ultimately opted for the tranquility of Maui's beaches — which turned out to be a fantastic decision for its convenient access to two Wailea beaches and multiple pools including an adventure pool with waterslides for my 5-year-old and a splash pool with sea animal structures for my 2-year-old The overall vibe of the resort is relaxed yet upscale making it ideal for families or couples looking for unpretentious tranquility I applied for a new Marriott Bonvoy credit card and made reservations through the Bonvoy app This allowed me to quickly reach the credit card's sign-up bonus of 150,000 points Booking through the Marriott app with Gold Elite status helped me earn points and nights toward Platinum status We also booked a package that included a discounted rate ($984) on a Garden Oasis room and complimentary breakfast for two adults throughout our four-night stay When booking Wailea Beach Resort by Marriott, you'll want to use one of the credit cards that earn the most points for Marriott stays, or one that offers automatic Marriott Bonvoy elite status for value-added benefits The information for the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card has been collected independently by The Points Guy The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer Arriving via a 30-minute shuttle ride from Kahului Airport (OGG) for $80 plus tip we were greeted by a friendly valet and the front desk staff They welcomed us with chilled guava juice and leis next to a spacious lanai with plentiful seating and a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean and neighboring islands A koi pond in a raised area with a tree swing and an Instagrammable "Aloha" sign faces the front desk My kids loved the tree swing and the koi pond which they stopped at many times during our stay and even though there were other groups checking in the fact that the "lobby" was all outside with a lot to look at made the experience feel relaxed and even fun Wailea Beach Resort offers a strategic location between two beaches While some reviews note the absence of direct beach access Exploring the rocky tide pools in front of the resort was a delight for my 5-year-old while the proximity to Wailea and Ulua beaches offered scenic walks The nearby Shops at Wailea provided convenient options for dining with Island Gourmet Markets offering affordable and tasty food and supplies just a stone's throw away Pro tip: The fresh ahi poke bowls were amazing The Garden Oasis room impressed us with its semiprivate outdoor space featuring a bathtub and shower The outdoor area was perfect for family activities during the day and adult relaxation after the kids went down tasteful decor that you'd expect from a Marriott property the Garden Oasis room was on the first floor we could hear noise from the valet stand that was close to us the private outdoor bath and shower were such a bonus This room was also priced much cheaper than any of the ocean-facing rooms Previous slideNext slide1 of 6JON MAXWELL/THE POINTS GUY012345We opted for an upgrade to an Ocean View Junior Suite for the last two nights The spacious layout gave everyone more personal space the real scene-stealer was the nightly sunset from our balcony sunsets and space really did justify the higher price point Previous slideNext slide1 of 5JON MAXWELL/THE POINTS GUY01234Dining and Starbucks and Whale's Tale which also serves cocktails during happy hour There are also three stand-alone bars: Makani Bar near the entrance Nalu Pool Bar at the Nalu Adventure Pool and Sunsets Bar next to the Maluhia Pool and while the bar is basically just a drink stand the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable which cost $16 and featured Paniolo whiskey which comes from a distillery using local ingredients we started our day at the breakfast buffet at Humble Market Kitchin You could also place a custom egg order with your server and our 2-year-old happily munched for free so we just paid $20 plus tip for our 5-year-old we returned for happy hour plates like Mongolian Baby Back Ribs and Chili-Peppah Wings which were flavorful and reasonably priced at $11 the vibe at Humble Market Kitchin was relaxed and casual Previous slideNext slide1 of 4JON MAXWELL/THE POINTS GUY0123The fitness center and other activitiesWe opted for a few add-on activities such as the outrigger canoe and snorkeling experience ($172 per person) and the Te Au Moana luau ($309 per adult and we rowed to a reef in front of the resort From there we got into the water and got to see some of the local aquatic life The luau was a Hawaiian feast with kalua pig as the centerpiece — but for me local performers told the story of Maui through song and dance I'm glad we were able to experience the luau snorkeling was more enjoyable since I was able to swim with large sea turtles which was an absolute highlight of the trip the length of the luau tested the patience of my young daughters The resort's complimentary activities game room and movie house provided additional entertainment options though we were unable to explore them fully due to our busy schedule and the fact that much of our free time was spent at the pool The family cabana rental ($400) provided a private retreat, and chicken tenders ($16), kalua pork nachos ($25) and acai bowls ($18) from Mo' Bettah Food Truck added to our poolside enjoyment. During the late afternoon, the waitstaff brings around complimentary cold treats like mochi ice cream and Melona bars. “Nothing Held Back.” are a box of placards with numbers in multiples of 10 going up to 90 revealing the increasing markdown percentages that will be going on the merchandise as the once popular store approaches its permanent closing date It is one of 10 surf stores on Maui — four Honolua Surf Company two Volcom and two Billabong — that are liquidating their stock and closing their doors for good Approximately 80 employees of the Maui stores were told in late January that they had about 12 weeks of employment left before the stores sell out their remaining boardshorts hats and other surfing- and skateboarding-inspired merchandise All of Liberated Brands’ Billabong, Quiksilver, Honolua and Volcom stores will close in the United States Liberated Brands has more than 124 retail locations across the country In a declaration supporting the bankruptcy including a rapid and dramatic rise in interest rates a decline in customer demand well below the historical trend line and substantial fixed costs placed significant pressure on Liberated’s revenue and cost structure.” USA Today reported that Liberated owes $83 million in secured debt and $143 million in unsecured debt Honolua also has stores in Pāʻia and Kīhei “The prices are changing and then it’s more promos,” said Kenny a store manager at the Honolua store in The Shops at Wailea who declined to give his last name “It gets more and more aggressive until everything’s gone.” but plans to stay with the company he has been with since 2022 until the bitter end: “I’m sticking around until we end up closing Four other employees at stores in the Wailea mall said they had already been approached by different companies about employment in a Maui job market that had a 4.0% unemployment rate after the third quarter of 2024 according to data from the state Department of Business said the loss of 10 stores and 80 jobs is bad news “It’s tremendously devastating for our island,” Tumpap said Tuesday morning “Anytime we lose a business on our island it’s devastating we are an island extremely dependent on the visitor industry maybe most dependent on the visitor industry … Over time we’re  seeing challenges in retail because “we’re seeing it all in a very condensed period of time All of this has been exacerbated by the wildfires on Maui and the fact that our visitor industry has been slow to recover Now we’re seeing tremendous impact and to be laying off that many workers is huge.”  As for the future of the surf shops’ current locations the general manager and vice president for the property management and leasing company for The Shops at Wailea said via email: “On behalf of The Shops at Wailea we have no additional information at this time.” the store manager of the Honolua store in The Shops at Wailea said there have been inquiries about the space his store currently occupies “There’s been people already looking and asking ‘what’s the square footage?’ I don’t know so I can’t help them much,” Kenny said. “They aren’t going to kick us out until we’re done with everything here.” Tumpap noted that there is a shortage of workers available on the island right now The loss of 10 stores in visitor hotspots like South Maui and West Maui are tough hits “Every loss of a job right now is terrible for our community because we’re trying to keep people here,” she said “We’re trying to sustain them on this island and we need strong visitor industry support to say please come.’ People know to be respectful and we’ve talked to some visitors and they’re not sure if they’re still welcome back.” They found out about the pending closure of their favorite Honolua store in Kīhei when they drove by on South Kīhei Road Monday morning “We buy all our surf wear here. We buy our son’s surf wear here. And it’s good prices and good quality The Smiths spent several minutes speaking with Nichole Flores a 25-year-old Maui High School graduate who has worked in retail on island since 2017 and has been with Honolua for the past year She plans to look for work in the hospitality industry after her current job runs its course “I think after this it’s time to branch out and try something new,” Flores said I actually really like this job and having it close down and we’re going to end up separating from each other.”  They’ve been here so long and it’s sad to hear from them because they’re sad This is kind of their home store as well.” Kim Ball opened Hi-Tech Surf Sports on Maui in 1982 and now has five stores and about 60 local employees said he has seen a decline in the quality of some of those products since they have been under the Liberated Brands umbrella it’s been going on for a couple of years ever since those brands sold to a licensee,” Ball said. “So it’s been a gradual decline for us with those brands because those brands are all heritage but they’re not the same brands that we knew a few years ago.” Ball said when the brands were folded into a conglomerate company “I don’t know what it’s going to be going forward it was hard to get goods because they were undercapitalized and I think they took on way more than they thought “They took on the wholesale — which is to us — direct to consumer That’s a lot to take on with all those brands and had partnered with Liberated to license them in the United States Authentic told The Associated Press in February that all licenses previously held by Liberated were transitioned to new partners prior to the bankruptcy filing “Quiksilver was the first boardshorts we ever carried,” Ball said “We’ve been in business since 1982 So obviously we’re not carrying them anymore We’re not going to carry Costco brands.” Ball also is the founder of Maui Interscholastic League surfing the only high school league in the nation to have surfing as a sanctioned sport Billabong has been its sponsor from the start providing funding to pay for MIL surf judges and water patrol lifeguards “I brought them in as an industry sponsor,” Ball said “They’ve pledged that they’ll be still an industry sponsor in 2025 Ball added that with the void created by the shutdowns will be openings for new and rejuvenated brands in the surf industry “The good news is we have other up-and-coming brands that will take their place,” Ball said EDITOR’S NOTE: This story contains a correction to accurately state Diana Whitt’s comments about the future of DisclosureAdvertiser Disclosure 61 Published Articles 3583 Edited Articles Opinions and recommendations are ours alone As part of a bucket-list family trip to Hawaii to kick off 2022 I found myself constantly checking hotel award availability across all of the islands to put together the best trip I could using (mostly) points and miles After securing 5 nights at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa I moved my searches away from Maui and on to Oahu I would occasionally peek back at Maui award availability because it had become part of my daily routine I was curious if last-minute availability would open up in January 2 back-to-back standard room nights opened up at the Grand Wailea That meant I could get an excellent redemption at a gorgeous Maui resort using my Hilton Honors points After rebooking our Hawaiian Airlines flights I was excited to extend our stay in Maui and check out a hotel that I have been wanting to visit for years spoiled from our stay at the Hyatt Regency on the other side of the island but I left relatively disappointed after a quick 2-night stay at the Grand Wailea what could have gone better during my stay The 776-room Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is located on 40-acres of stunning beachfront property in Wailea This part of the island is less touristy than Lahaina It had a very residential feel to it as we were arriving by car it’s surrounded by other resorts along the coast The resort is located about 17 miles from Kahului Airport (OGG) which should take about 35 minutes with light traffic Since we were coming from the Hyatt Regency in Lahaina it was a 32-mile drive and took us just under an hour If you aren’t familiar, the Waldorf Astoria brand is a group of luxury hotels that is part of the Hilton family Despite Hilton not using fixed categories for its hotels, most luxury properties have a capped price of 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night for a standard room. That was still true during my visit in January 2022. However, in March 2022, Hilton jacked up the minimum price (see: devaluation) of this and other top-tier luxury hotels without notice Now it will cost at least 110,000 Hilton Honors points per night to visit this property this would be an excellent redemption — especially now that the minimum redemption rate has increased The Grand Wailea is a top-tier property in the Hilton portfolio and the prices reflect that Hilton Honors points can get a little crazy as points value is somewhat tied to the cash price of a hotel Although standard rooms have a capped price higher room categories can cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of points per night Finding 2 nights at 95,000 points per night was a steal Here is a look at what other reward night options looked like: award rates can get a little out of hand if you can’t score a standard room Cash rates started at around $1,100 per night (plus tax and resort fee) for a Terrace View room, so I got over 1 cent per point in value, which is more than double our latest point valuation Even if I were paying cash I would use my Hilton Aspire card because it earns 14x points at Hilton properties this hotel stay triggered the $250 annual resort statement credit The Grand Wailea is located in the town of Wailea which is a much quieter area compared to the resort-heavy Lahaina we made our way to the entrance of the Grand Wailea I pulled the car down the long driveway surrounded by lush greenery until we got to the porte-cochère Since there was some construction going on (red flag #1) the garage was not available for self-parking Parking is not included on award nights for Diamond members the staff was great and unloaded our car while we went to check-in at the lobby The entrance to the hotel and lobby is gorgeous with plants and water features on each side we were greeted with temporary walls and deafening jackhammering from the very active construction zone I carried on with a smile because after all And I thought perhaps I had missed a note about the hotel being under renovation there was no advance notice of construction during our stay we were greeted by an agent with a big smile who welcomed us and presented me and my family with beautiful leis The check-in process was extremely awkward as the front desk agent had to try and do her job while simultaneously being drowned out by jackhammering just a few feet away As a former front desk agent (who has been through a property renovation) I honestly felt bad for her as she had to spend her entire shift there We mostly just smiled and nodded our heads and she tried to explain the property to us through the noise a bellman escorted us to our room and gave us a quieter overview of the property on the way My wife and I are both Hilton Honors Diamond members, but after staying at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa with World of Hyatt Globalist status the elite benefits at the Grand Wailea paled in comparison we would have had to pay the $45 resort fee which included half of those benefits Although I booked a Terrace View for 95,000 points per night we received an Ocean View room (not a suite) which was going for around 600,000 points per night That isn’t to say that the room was 6x better but more of a highlight of how silly Hilton’s point system can be it didn’t have uninterrupted views of the ocean but it did look out directly over a cute little koi pond It turns out we were pretty lucky to have this koi pond because similar ground floor rooms had only grass Despite being a Diamond member celebrating my birthday there was no special welcome amenity — cue the tiny violin I have seen less-impressive resort fee lists — this one wasn’t bad My daughter especially enjoyed the hula and ukelele lessons Late checkout is not a guaranteed benefit for top-tier Hilton Honors Diamond members we didn’t need one as we had a morning flight on our final day you are likely looking for some beautiful weather The Grand Wailea can check all of those boxes my family and I had a blast in the pools and really enjoyed the food — despite the prices Let’s take a look at the amenities at the Grand Wailea The pools at the Grand Wailea were arguably the biggest attraction but you can use the same beach no matter where you are staying there are only 2 pools on the property: the Hibiscus Pool and the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool the activity pool is broken up into a bunch of smaller sections that made it feel like there were dozens of options this was our only pool option as the Hibiscus Pool was for adults only The Hibiscus Pool is the most recognizable and Instagramable swimming pool at the Grand Wailea the Hibiscus Pool is stunning and has great views of the ocean With hot tubs on each side and cabanas nearby this is an excellent place to relax as it is for adults only there is a grass courtyard that is just as peaceful with views of the beach and swaying palm trees I chose my words carefully above when I said “swimming pool.” The most Instagramable pool at the Grand Wailea is actually the Reflection Pool An absolutely stunning pool escorts guests from the hotel to the beach and pool areas and I strongly believe that it is physically impossible to pass by without taking a picture — at least in my personal experience While I would have loved to check out the fancy pool the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool was more than enough to keep my family busy If only it opened earlier… and stayed open later But the water slides and lazy river closed at 4 p.m. the water stopped moving and what was once a fun and busy area turned into a weird which is really only accessible by taking a series of waterslides from pool to pool (which is awesome by the way) followed shortly after by the Volcano Bar and Grill in the main pool area it really felt like we were getting kicked out before sunset and no food and beverage service available We ended up grabbing a pizza from Cafe Kula and hanging at the Baby Beach until the early evening along with other families who were just as confused as we were straight from the airport and wanted to enjoy the pool but couldn’t find any towels we offered (and they accepted) some of our used towels… at a Waldorf Astoria With so many guests traveling from all over the world not having a decent pool option in the evening was a major fail This was a far cry from the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa where the pools were open 24 hours per day — and towels were easily accessible let’s go check out all of the fun parts of this pool — like the water slides with chipped paint to slow you down There are a total of 7 water slides throughout the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool while the rest are smaller and are used to connect one pool to another — which is a really fun way to explore the area the 262-foot Lava Tube Slide is the most exciting option as it drops riders down 3 stories (30 feet/9 meters) in 14 seconds and can reach speeds up to 22 miles per hour but kids need to be 48 inches or taller to ride The other water slides were still a lot of fun and were more family-friendly The kids and I were constantly taking the slides from 1 pool to another as a way to get around One of the best uses of the water slides is getting to the Grotto Bar which is otherwise inaccessible if you don’t want to jump in the water Riding 4 water slides and then ordering a Mai Tai is now my preferred method of drink delivery you’ll eventually be spit out into the lazy river and the main part of the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool so people just bob along to get from one part to another there is no option to just float and relax we set up our chairs on the edge of the lazy river so we could go for a ride down the slides and then let the water current take us back to our seats For the older kids (and maybe a parent or 2) My Tarzan Swing attempt was not documented The Baby Beach was a really fun area for families Located right next to the main Wailea Canyon pool the Baby Beach was the perfect spot for little swimmers adults could relax while the little ones splashed away in very shallow water with soft sand underfoot With a rope separating the Baby Beach from the Lazy River getting from one to the another was easy enough but the rope kept the kids from venturing off into deeper water When the rest of the pool closed for the day (sigh) this was a nice spot to relax and enjoy the sunset overlooking the ocean behind us both the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool and Hibiscus Pool Day beds start at $250 per day for 2 people with no food and beverage amenities included Premium cabanas can cost over $1,500 per day depending on the date Guests can make cabana reservations online The Grand Wailea is located right in front of the beautiful and world-famous Wailea Beach so there is a small pathway between the hotel and the beach that meanders along the coast The beach had soft sand and gentle waves and was as picturesque as you could want Beach chairs and umbrellas were available from the hotel and included in the resort fee Some of the most memorable parts of this family vacation to Hawaii were the cultural lessons we received Learning about the Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures was something my kids really enjoyed and it helped us appreciate and respect our experiences throughout the islands even more There was no shortage of cultural activities at the Grand Wailea but if there is something you want to experience We were very grateful that the concierge was able to get our daughter into a hula lesson at the last minute it was a little awkward that the hotel held this hula lesson in the basement near the conference rooms having hula lessons outside seems like a no-brainer there were plenty of other options including: Cultural activities can be scheduled online Mōhalu by Spa Grande offers guests the chance to be pampered in the treatment rooms or in outdoor cabanas overlooking the lush garden or ocean Construction has temporarily displaced some of the treatment rooms Spa appointments can be made online One really fun (and easy and free) kids’ activity at the Grand Wailea was completing the Grand Passport both kids were presented with their own passports that they could show at check-out to receive a surprise In the passport were a map of the property and a scavenger hunt that the kids could participate in at their own speed while learning about the property and history of Hawaii but eventually were able to complete their passports They were each rewarded with a beautiful souvenir necklace to bring home The 24-hour fitness center at the Grand Wailea was quite impressive Despite some obstacles and blocked entrances due to the ongoing construction I was able to make my way to the 2,500-square-foot (232 square meters) The top floor of the fitness center had a front desk with towels and a trainer available to answer questions This was also where I found most of the treadmills and elliptical machines there was a rowing machine as well as some other Technogym equipment Overall, the gym was really nice with high-quality equipment. Also, complimentary fitness class registration can be completed online One of the amenities that I really liked across all of the hotels (Hilton and Marriott) we stayed at in Hawaii was the use of reusable water bottles Instead of 2 (or no) plastic water bottles in our rooms we received reusable bottles that could be refilled throughout the property I really don’t like having to pay for water at hotels filling up bottles and keeping everyone hydrated over the course of a stay can get really expensive That is an expense you don’t have to stress about here The Grand Wailea provides 2 PATH Water refillable bottles and there are refill stations located throughout the property Since we travel with our own bottles as well we filled up the kids’ personal bottles at the stations getting on a nice course while in Hawaii is a must-do Fortunately, Wailea Golf Club is nearby with 3 award-winning courses that can accommodate a range of skill levels guests can borrow beach cruiser bikes to explore the area Bikes and helmets are available for both kids and adults I ended up going on a solo ride to check out the area, riding up the road to the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, and then down the public walkway (walking my bike) until I got to The Shops at Wailea and then rode back along the main road which is home to a handful of retail shops with a little bit of everything but mostly clothing like Tommy Bahama and Quicksilver If you need something to complete your resort wear look I was somewhat surprised to see that the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is pet-friendly — and the price wasn’t crazy Pets under 50 pounds are welcome for $30 per night That’s less than half the cost of valet parking Service animals are not subject to this fee Hot Tip: If you are bringing your pet to Hawaii, it may be subject to animal quarantine The only parking option was to valet for $65 per night If you need to get some work done while at the Grand Wailea the Akamai Business Center is available for guests Located at the end of the Haleakala Wing past the retail shops and cafe was a convenient little office to help with printing I know, I know. I was in Hawaii, get off my phone, etc. Well, it’s tough when the Upgraded Points Instagram account is so good the Wi-Fi at the Grand Wailea couldn’t keep up so moving from one area to another meant losing one signal and picking up another getting a steady wireless internet signal was pretty inconsistent This is a hotel with big conference rooms and rates that start over $1,000 per night or a wedding (and only need 10 Mbps of internet) With over 34,000 square feet (3,100 square meters) of event space You can find more information about event space online I booked a Terrace View and was very grateful to be upgraded to an Ocean View room overlooking a koi pond which is on the ground floor towards the end of the Chapel Wing This location was nice as we could walk around the end of the wing to get to the pool and beach area The room is listed at a generous 640 square feet (59 square meters) which was great as we had a lot of space — although a lot of it was in the bathroom there was a relatively narrow hallway splitting the closets on the left and the bathroom on the right each with doors that swung into the hallway The closet was a decent size with an extra pillow on the right-hand side was a small cabinet with a Keurig coffee maker on top and a minifridge below inside The narrow hall opened up into a spacious bedroom area but I was happy to leave them behind at checkout I smashed my shins on this bed frame more times than I want to admit over our 2-night stay Plus there was this random gap at the top of the bed our pillows would eventually end up falling down next to the bed was this great little alarm clock (with 2 USB outlets!) that had an LED display on 3 sides so that both beds could see the time — brilliant Across from the beds was a 55-inch TV above a set of very big drawers There was also a full-sized desk with 2 chairs Probably the best part of the room was the balcony Being able to wake up and immediately step outside is a great feeling The balcony had 2 large (old and squeaky) chairs It was a nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine when the kids fell asleep But the best part of the balcony was the koi pond the view of the ocean and chapel was stunning but the koi pond made it feel special and gave an extra level of privacy Rooms that did not have a pond had grass that ran right up to the balcony meaning you (or any other guest) could just walk right in The pond provided an extra level of peacefulness But there was a nice lineup of individual amenities and the shower was full of chipped tiles with nowhere to hang a towel It was nice to have a door to the toilet when sharing a room with 3 people but you need to contort your body to close the door while inside I hope this area gets some attention during the renovation The eating and drinking at the Grand Wailea was quite good With no lounge or decent elite benefits to speak of feeding a family here is a good way to meet a minimum spend on a new credit card Café Kula is a great little cafe that was open all day With options including fresh fruit and pastries this spot easily had the best variety and prices (relatively speaking) at the Grand Wailea This is where we had breakfast each morning The coffee was good and the avocado toast and açaí bowls were delicious but our $50 daily credit barely covered that which was a good option for evenings on the balcony Café Kula is open daily from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m., and there is an online menu My favorite spot at the Grand Wailea was the Grotto Bar Only accessible while you are in the pool, and best accessed by taking 4 water slides and a mini lazy river — just don’t let the current take you past it Tucked inside a cave with waterfalls cascading by there could be worse places to hang out if you want to avoid the sun My only complaint is that it (and the water slides) closed so early Bistro Molokini is a Mediterranean American casual restaurant located next to the Hibiscus Pool offering great views of the beach and ocean We visited for dinner 1 night and everyone enjoyed what they ordered I ordered the extremely unphotogenic Hanger Steak with kale “Caesar” salad — yes which was essentially a fancy Reece’s peanut butter cup topped with ice cream — highly recommended The total for 2 adults and 2 kids was $260 At least the kids each got a stuffed humpback whale as a welcome gift Bistro Molokini is open daily from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. for lunch, and from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. for dinner, and there is an online menu and Wailea Surf Haus (which may also be labeled Volcano Bar and Grill on some maps) was… ok The drinks were good but small and expensive lunch service was a nice option to have by the pool This was another spot by the pool that closed early Wailea Surf Haus is open daily from 10:30 a.m If you are looking for a high-end Hawaiian dining experience (apparently) you can find that at Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa enjoying a nice meal here with the sun setting over the ocean sounds like a nice time that didn’t fit into our schedule for this trip Humu Humu is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. for breakfast, and from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. for dinner. There is an online menu Botero Lounge is scheduled to open in May 2022 Omotenashi Lounge is advertised as Grand Wailea’s Executive Lounge so I thought that as a Hilton Diamond member The Omotenashi Lounge is housed in an authentic Japanese teahouse brought over from Japan Access costs $250 per day and includes breakfast and hors d’oeuvres There is nothing like an authentic lū’au to experience some Hawaiian culture You can enjoy the interactive entertainment each evening on the Grand Wailea lawn Lū’au prices start at $200 for children and $265 for adults, and there is an online menu it’s clear that the property was under construction/heavy renovation The entire lobby was an active construction zone There were leaks throughout — and it wasn’t raining All of this with no notice or warning to arriving guests the resort doesn’t want to lose revenue on top of paying for improvements But what an awful surprise for arriving guests Our stay was more of a bonus since we extended our stay in Maui to visit the hotel But I can only imagine guests who have been dreaming about their vacation walking in the lobby and not being able to hear their own thoughts because of jackhammering Not a luxury experience for a Waldorf Astoria property Hot Tip: Learn more about the construction at the hotel’s Grand Updates page we had very pleasant experiences with the staff who were friendly and accommodating enough — although probably exhausted I could only feel sympathy for the front desk staff who had to endure hours of construction noise just steps from their desk When I asked about the construction at check-in the agent shrugged her shoulders and said she had no idea how long it would take or what they were doing Based on Tripadvisor reviews from before and after our stay it looks like I am not the only one expressing my displeasure There have been so many negative reviews that the GM has resorted to copying and pasting responses the official response is “The resort is currently undergoing a multi-faceted revitalization and will soon offer a fresh I wouldn’t write a negative review without first voicing my concerns directly to the hotel so that they could have an opportunity to improve the situation I even did so directly through the app during my stay so that my thoughts were clear Only for the hotel to respond with a “sorry ’bout that thanks for the feedback!” style response while misspelling my name And then capped off with a generic message before checkout along the lines of “If your stay has been anything less than a 10 Once I got home and completed the post-stay survey I received a phone call from the hotel offering to refund my parking fee but that did nothing to change my experience Overall, my family and I had a very good time at Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort and I would really like to visit again… in a few years I’ve worked in hotels and in the service industry I look the other way and give the benefit of the doubt more often than I should because I know how tough this business can be But this was just one of those stays where every little negative thing that otherwise wouldn’t be a big deal just compounded It left both my wife and me with a less-than-ideal experience — at what should be a 5-star Waldorf Astoria in Maui and we still had 1 more stop on our itinerary A Waldorf Astoria is located in front of Wailea beach in Wailea The romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston was filmed at the Grand Wailea in Maui Yes, the Grand Wailea is currently undergoing a renovation across multiple parts of the property. With so many upgrades, in fact, Chef Urig finds it redundant to put ‘Made in Maui’ designations onto the menus. “We are proud that the vast majority of our produce (80%) is local.” “We have worked to create local partnerships.” Says Chef Urig. “Much of the locally sourced produce integrated within dishes has been grown under traditional Hawaiian practices aligning to the Helu Pō of the state. We work with local farms to highlight their masterfully raised product such as taro, pineapple and Kālua pig.” A selection of fresh seafood served at Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa Fast-casual Loulu has a farm-to-table vibe with distinctive nods to the region and with Nobu soon to open, there are about to be even more options. Manager Natasha Ponte and Chef Taylor Ponte Armstrong is opening Aurum Maui at The Shops at Wailea in a partnership with the Pontes A Colorado-based restaurant group known for fine dining at world-class ski resorts is bringing the “gold standard” to Maui a new restaurant from the Destination Hospitality Group is set to open at The Shops at Wailea in June with two Maui natives — Chef Taylor Ponte and General Manager Natasha Ponte — as partners in the new venture “Opening Aurum Maui at The Shops at Wailea is a significant milestone for me as a chef,” Taylor said in a statement reflecting the community that makes hospitality in Hawaii unique The concept that’s made Aurum Food & Wine successful prioritizes fresh produce sustainable protein and whole-animal utilization with a community-focused approach Through partnerships with local farms and fisheries Aurum Maui plans to embrace that same philosophy while plating flavors unique to the island and supporting Maui’s agricultural heritage “There are like 20 different providers that (Taylor) has built this menu around and so it really gives us an opportunity to showcase his relationships,” said Phillips Armstrong but it’s like Taylor Ponte’s sort of version of Aurum because his relationships in this market are so deep … I think it’s a wonderful way to make the Aurum menu part of this community.” Aurum currently has locations in Steamboat Springs Aspen and Breckenridge — all well-known resort destinations in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains — and Aurum’s debut on Maui will mark the first and only one of its restaurants outside Colorado as well as Aurum Maui General Manager Natasha Ponte and Chef Taylor Ponte are excited to open a new restaurant at the Shops at Wailea that will feature local produce it might seem like a stretch for a small family of restaurants to grow from Colorado’s ski slopes to an island in the middle of the Pacific he saw similarities between Colorado’s ski resorts and Maui as both offer a vibrant scene with a wealth of culinary options catering to locals and to guests Armstrong said that realization led him to start entertaining the idea of opening a restaurant outside the core of the Colorado mountain towns he started talking to commercial brokers on Maui as he continued to feel out the idea Then Armstrong met Taylor and Natasha Ponte I fell in love with Maui and decided to move here which was not a planned event at all,” Armstrong said we were interested in trying to prove the concept outside the Colorado resort markets and this felt right.” The restaurant’s name comes from the periodic table of elements where gold is represented by the letters AU While Aurum’s menus all offer the same “gold standard” dishes Aurum Maui will use Hawaii’s produce to craft dishes that balance tradition innovation and sustainability while also showcasing a number of local producers Aurum has thrived while investing in the communities where the company operates Phillips said that same support will carry over with Maui “Maui is no different,” he said “I’ve literally moved my family here full time and we’ve really invested in Taylor and Natasha being sort of the lead face of this business … Where we differ from maybe a typical mainland company coming into Maui is that we’re all-in on the community.” Taylor and Natasha all want to invest in local causes on Maui too “We’re not like that mainland group that comes and puts an outpost on Maui and checks in from a corporate level every once in a while We’ve built our entire management team from local people I think that’s an important part of our story,” Armstrong said Aurum Maui is now hiring hospitality professionals to join its team. sent the project back to the Maui Planning Commission for a public hearing A luxury housing development in Wailea was on track to secure its final approvals from a divided Maui County Council this month when a local nonprofit found a procedural mistake that is delaying construction The Planning Commission failed to hold a public hearing in South Maui where the project is to be located as required by law, according to Maui Tomorrow Executive Director Albert Perez He said there was an error in the commission’s handling of Bill 171, which along with Bill 172 would shrink affordable housing requirements to 288 units from the previously agreed upon 700 units at the Honua‘ula project On Sept. 24, prior to sending the proposal to the council, planning commissioners held a public hearing in Wailuku, when it should have been held in South Maui — the community affected by Bill 171 — in compliance with Section 19.45 of the Maui County Code who pointed out the mistake to county officials Planning Commission Chair Kimberly Thayer said the next step is to schedule a new public hearing in South Maui “I believe our January and February agendas are largely spoken for,” she said “We might have to schedule a special meeting otherwise it’ll be potentially after February.” The Planning Commission is a volunteer body staffed by the Maui Planning Department does their scheduling and picks the location of their meetings This type of proceeding doesn’t come up often and even the Department of Corporation Counsel may not have been aware of the rules regarding the location of the public hearing “I truly believe it was an inadvertent mistake and we can go back and follow the correct procedure,” council member Tamara Paltin said In light of the mistake, the council canceled the bills’ first reading and public hearing scheduled earlier this month Council Chair Alice Lee had planned to schedule the bills on Dec Thayer said the whole process will have to start from scratch The commission will schedule a public hearing then convene to deliberate and make recommendations to the council “It’s as if the proceeding never happened,” she said The pair of bills were being processed side-by-side with uncommon speed by the nine-member council’s pro-development majority Lee referred the bills directly to the Housing and Land Use Committee where Chair Tasha Kama reduced the length of public testimony for each testifier Council member Gabe Johnson said the council could be rushing the bills because of a pending lawsuit filed in late November by former council member Kelly King who narrowly lost to incumbent Tom Cook in the last election Cook’s 97-vote victory assured the continuation of the council’s five-member majority whose campaigns were supported by the construction industry and labor unions King’s complaint with the Hawaii Supreme Court points to potential irregularities in the voting process including a high rejection rate of 1.9% of mail-in ballots She’s asked the court to invalidate the results and hold a new election adding there might be a special election for the South Maui candidate “If you have a new person on the council then maybe this project won’t pass,” he said “That’s why there was a sense of urgency for folks who wanted this to pass.” “The whole entire town of Lahaina burned down was particularly frustrated by the speed at which the council majority pushed these bills compared to others affecting Lahaina residents and there’s no sense of urgency,” Paltin said at a meeting earlier this month adding that 300 people who applied for permits to rebuild their homes in Lahaina still don’t know when they will be allowed to rebuild Wailea 670 benefited from a direct referral that allowed it to bypass a step and it’s not the people of Lahaina,” she said “It’s the luxury developments.” Not even a month after the elections, the development-friendly council majority — who campaigned for affordable housing — is already softening developers’ requirements in the luxury home development in Wailea “There’s too much luxury development on this island already I’ve said it and I’ll say it again Maui is becoming a place for only the rich the uber-wealthy… and that’s not the Maui I want to see that the community wants to see,” council member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez said at a meeting earlier this month a reluctant council that included former Mayor Mike Victorino reached a close 5-4 vote on final approval of the project only because it would bring 700 affordable homes to South Maui as part of the deal “I hope when this is all said and done that these developers don’t come back and try to see another council,” Victorino told his colleagues in 2007 I hope that the record will show that I said ‘Please do not change the conditions we put forward.’” The 670-acre project on the southern tip of Pi‘ilani Highway was approved for 1,400 homes with 50% of them being affordable units to comply with the law at that time 450 affordable homes would be built within the project’s site Those off-site homes would be at the proposed Pi‘ilani Promenade also known as the Mega Mall — a project eventually blocked by the courts the developers dropped the number of overall units to 1,150 Now they have asked the council to reduce the number of affordable units in accordance with a 2014 law that reduced the requirement to a 20% match for new developments The developers had also agreed to improve Pi‘ilani Highway they want the state Department of Transportation to take over that responsibility the developers would build 50 additional affordable units as a tradeoff For each affordable housing built over the 20% current requirement the developers are asking the council to grant them affordable housing credits They could then sell those credits to other developers who in turn would use them to reduce their affordable housing requirements I refuse to beg for scraps and then tell our constituents to be grateful to these developers.” developers had committed to put $5 million toward a Little League Baseball field in 2008 they want to exchange that for a cultural center on their land with the land value subtracted from the $5 million all coming out of our total of 1,150,” attorney Cal Chipchase told the council at a meeting earlier this month the project simply wouldn’t proceed.” it was an assurance of affordable homes for the community it was a major and unwarranted reduction from the original 2008 agreement of 700 units I refuse to beg for scraps and then tell our constituents to be grateful to these developers,” Rawlins-Fernandez said at a meeting Civil Beat’s coverage of Maui County is supported in part by a grant from the Nuestro Futuro Foundation Unfortunately, being named a finalist for The spa experience overall was very relaxing and a good way to unwind and treat myself for a few hours Shopping at the resort includes high-end jewelry and artwork there is the Kilolani Spa retail shop and the pool activity shop To say this resort is family-friendly would be an understatement There was no shortage of activities to keep kids entertained from the pools to the beaches to the culturally focused activities Most of the activities take place in the Kilohana Resource and Cultural Center near the resort shops a Hawaiian cultural ambassador provides weekly tours around the resort allowing families to learn about Hawaiian history and culture through stories and artifacts on the property Keep in mind that parents are required to accompany their children to the activities While there isn't currently a kids club the resort is working on a plan for a kids club location on the property if parents want to retreat to the spa together the resort can recommend child care services One very special activity to note is the Grand Luau which is available on select dates — I recommend calling the resort ahead of time to book it — and takes place on one of two oceanfront lawns at the resort It's an entertaining and enriching experience from start to finish Local vendors set up before the show and display everything from wood carvings to handmade jewelry woven grass purses and other handmade gifts and souvenirs we were welcomed with leis for the adults and a necklace for our daughter along with drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic options are available) before being escorted to our assigned table which I appreciated after having experienced other luaus that offer shared tables and buffet food Previous slideNext slide1 of 3BECKY BLAINE/THE POINTS GUY012The Grand Luau offered family-style dining at our own private table and multiple courses Previous slideNext slide1 of 6BECKY BLAINE/THE POINTS GUY012345The food was plentiful and fantastic The emcee shared Polynesian legends and the history of Hawaii providing families with a chance to learn and appreciate more about the Hawaiian culture through dance and storytelling Luau pricing starts at $275 per adult and $170 for kids It's easy to use Grand Wailea Maui's website to search for accessible room types you'll find full lists of accessibility features Public-area accessibility features include wide hallways The pathways around the resort are paved and offer access to the beach The new Kilolani Spa was built with accessibility in mind — it features ramps elevators and wide doorways for common spaces and treatment rooms no one was ready to say goodbye to this slice of paradise At checkout my daughter turned in her kids passport book after finding all of the locations on the property and was presented with her surprise — a hand-carved wooden sea turtle necklace It was another family vacation with wonderful memories made even better by a great staff. It wasn't until we returned home that we realized the resort has a webcam you can check out for a daily dose of paradise. I'll be tuning in until it's time to return. Entertainment Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is one of World of Hyatt’s most aspirational properties the hotel is not only one of the most expensive on the island but also one of the most beautiful and walking-distance proximity to nearby attractions the hotel is a go-to property for tourists visiting Maui The Andaz concept is one of Hyatt’s luxury brands designed to offer upscale amenities with modern design This outpost opened in 2013 and has been one of Hyatt’s most-redeemed properties for points ever since the Andaz is located approximately 30 minutes from Kahului Airport (OGG) in the high-end Wailea area The best way to get to the hotel is to rent a car from the airport Public transit options are not great on the island and relying on the infrequent bus service is not wise While there are several private taxi and limousine companies that can take you to the hotel most guests rent a car because you’ll want to leave the resort to explore the island and that really is only possible by car The hotel is oceanfront and is walkable along the coast for several miles. Walking from the hotel, you’ll pass the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort, Grand Wailea the walkway along the coast passing these various hotels can and will flood out While severe rain is unlikely on the island there was substantial rain that caused some of the paths to become blocked off during my visit The Shops at Wailea are located approximately 5 minutes from the hotel Here you’ll find some of the island’s luxury stores There are also several restaurants located nearby Most resorts are not walkable to many restaurants so the fact that the Andaz is makes it one of the better places to stay on the island Also to note is the Island Gourmet Markets This grocery store is filled with made-to-order food especially if you’re coming off a long flight or are visiting the beach and you want to take something with you While the grocery store isn’t a full-service one (you won’t find raw chicken or eggs Hot Tip: Our ultimate Hawaii travel guide to Maui includes details on top attractions, the best beaches This particular hotel was a World of Hyatt Category 7 at the time of booking but has since moved up to a Category 8 The rating for this card has been determined by our own industry experts who know the ins and outs of credit card products. My first 6 nights were upgraded using a Globalist suite upgrade certificate I asked if I could keep the suite the entire stay but was told to check back with the desk the following day to see if that was possible In the center of the lobby was a giant sand art display that oddly enough had several seats scattered around it There were several pictures drawn in the sand throughout our stay each time ruined by someone who unknowingly stepped into the pit clearly the memo wasn’t received by everyone you can feel the fresh air throughout the hotel there were plenty of seats in the lobby overlooking the gorgeous scenery outside There’s certainly no better place to relax You could take a quick nap in one of these lounge chairs facing the ocean There is also a desk for Pacific Dream Photography at one end of the lobby to help capture memories of Hawaii A photo session is included with your resort fee (detailed in the Amenities section below) This hotel does a decent job of honoring World of Hyatt elite benefits and as a Hyatt Globalist I was entitled to several: I was told that individual water bottles weren’t provided since the hotel was “going green” — as such the room didn’t have any cups or glasses to use with them Not really knowing how the pitchers were filled I opted to buy a small case of water from Costco to use throughout my stay While Globalist guests are guaranteed a 4 p.m and I was assured of this by the front desk I received a call on my last day of the stay asking why I hadn’t left the room yet I was told that another Globalist guest needed the room but I mentioned to the agent on the phone that I was a Globalist myself and was guaranteed the 4 p.m She apologized and said this normally wasn’t done for guests in a suite but I pushed back saying that there was no mention of the policy at any point during my stay She offered to give me another room for the remainder of my time at the hotel out of Maui’s airport and I needed to leave the hotel around 7 p.m. having a room well beyond my planned 4 p.m I took her up on the offer and promptly headed down to the front desk with my bag where I exchanged keys and moved into a room with 2 double beds facing the back side of the property I was happy because I got to stay on-site 3 hours longer than I’d anticipated Bottom Line: Globalist late checkout at this hotel may not be offered if you’re in a suite so work with the front desk to see what your options are if you need to stay late The hotel didn’t offer any self-parking on-site and valet parking was $40 per night (waived for Globalists on award nights) which can easily add up depending on the length of your stay The hotel had a costly $48 + tax mandatory resort fee per night The fee is waived for Globalist guests under any rate I partook in a few of these options during my stay but the resort fee is certainly a steep price The fact that it is mandatory makes it a difficult pill to swallow for those not staying on a free award night One of the highlights of my stay was a lei-making class offered as part of the resort fee We gathered in the lobby and received instructions from a native Hawaiian on what leis are used for and how to make them we were given bags of flowers and a string to needle through the flower stems to form our own leis I’ve never before had a chance to learn about the culture behind these iconic rings of flowers Hot Tip: Each of the on-site activities required a reservation so be sure to save your spot early before an activity sells out The spa had limited service available due to COVID-19, but a menu of spa and salon services can be found on its website The gym is located in the north tower of the property on the bottom level and was open from 5 a.m It had all of your standard exercise equipment from Matrix though was surprisingly small for the size of the resort Cold towels and water were provided inside A schedule of the complimentary fitness classes can be found online A kids’ club is located on-site but is unavailable until further notice due to COVID-19 precautions Pets are welcome The weight limits are 50 pounds for 1 dog and 75 pounds combined for 2 dogs To help fill some of the unused banquet and meeting rooms the Andaz has partnered with local boutique shops to set up “pop-up” locations A concierge desk is located just off of the front desk and I typically saw it staffed by only 1 concierge I had several issues with the person staffing this desk and wasn’t impressed with the service offered Just below the lobby are the hotel’s main pools There were plenty of deck chairs and cabanas scattered throughout as well as a hot tub located on the top level Cabanas and day beds at the various pools were available to rent online or through the concierge The pools normally weren’t crowded during my stay and most people coming down seemed to want to stay dry by sunbathing versus heading into the water If you’re looking for an adults-only experience there is an adults-only pool right near the exercise facility This pool includes several “swim-up” hotel rooms as well as a private retreat without kids running around (though to be honest there weren’t many kids running around the main pools so there’s no exclusive area just for Andaz guests anyone passing by can avail themselves of the area as the Andaz does not own this land Because of the distance from the hotel bar and restaurant there are no food and beverage services directly on the beach itself A staffed kiosk offered the ability to rent small boats and boards You can rent a surfboard or paddleboard from the Andaz on the beach.Advertisement which is the base-level suite at this hotel I used a Globalist suite upgrade certificate nearly a year in advance though it’s worth noting that a Globalist can receive this upgrade upon arrival if it is available and each features some type of “obstructed view,” according to the front desk I was told each of the Andaz Suites has some type of ocean view though none has a completely unfiltered view My room was directly behind the Andaz villas and had a view of the ocean off to the side There are some rooms in this hotel that have views of the foliage and parking lot so to have some type of ocean view was great It’s certainly worth noting that some of the views will be of another building if you’re concerned with that there is a rather hidden bathroom off to the left The handle is embedded into the wood paneling so it’s quite easy to miss if you aren’t looking there was a large dining room table with space for 6 people a large refreshment center featured a refrigerator The refrigerator in the refreshment center included 2 pitchers of water The living room also featured a long table with a chair Beyond the desk area is the living area with an armchair there is a balcony that connects down the length of the room to the bedroom On the living room side of the balcony was a hanging “cocoon” chair This was the side of the room where I could best see the resort and ocean views One odd thing I found about the swinging chair was that it seemed to be bolted in so when you’d sit you’d swing towards the wall instead of towards the view I’m not sure if this was intentional or not Moving into the bedroom was a large king bed On each side of the bed was a nightstand with outlets making charging phones and watches easy at night The bedroom is separated from the living area by a sliding door By each side of the bed was a set out of outlets as well as controls for the lights and the shades I could choose to either lower the sheer curtain or a blackout curtain and raise each to various levels where I had to pull a hidden handle to reveal a separate toilet room complete with heated seats and washing functions In the main bathroom is a long counter with 2 sinks On the other side of the bathroom is a soaking tub which is almost the whole length of the bathroom there is a handheld wand as well as a rain shower from above On one end was a decorative ladder where 2 towels were stored A closet next to the sink contained an ironing board One downside of this room is the lack of privacy Separating the shower from the bedroom is a large glass wall and there are 2 sliding doors that can be moved into place to create some privacy though the walls still have slats in them where you can see inside if you’re standing at the right angle While some hotels try to be modern with their bathrooms it can be annoying when there isn’t complete privacy in the bathroom This is worth noting before you book any rooms at the Andaz as all bathrooms seem to be designed the same Bottom Line: The Andaz Suites have an obstructed view but these views are far better than those of rooms that face the parking lot Book suites early as they tend to sell out There are multiple food and beverage outlets on the property each offering different fare and dining options Ka’ana Kitchen is the main restaurant on-property and is where guests go for breakfast Breakfast costs $60 per person for the buffet so if you don’t have top-tier status or breakfast included with your rate be prepared to shell out quite a bit for this morning meal and since the entire restaurant is open-air but servers were happy to get any made-to-order items like omelets or eggs prepared It was in a self-serve station where I could fill my own glass There was also a rotation of Asian-inspired dishes fried noodles (which were out-of-this-world good) I could choose from a wide selection of fruit Nextdoor was a baked-goods table with all sorts of pastries The buffet was unlimited — I could go up as much as I wanted I indulged a few times but wanted to save room for lunch and dinner as well One of the things this hotel did really well was handling the check the server immediately mentioned I was a Globalist brought out a check with the gratuity included and mentioned signing off on the bill to have everything comped as some hotels end up leaving the breakfast on the bill causing quite a bit of confusion and a mess at checkout Bumbye Beach Bar was open from 11 a.m daily and served cocktails and light snacks and lunch the food was great and served without issue If you’re in the mood for a good lobster grilled cheese Lehua Lounge is the property’s all-day bar so you’re also able to purchase branded shirts and hats The Feast at Mokapu Luau is the hotel’s in-house lu’au While I didn’t attend on this specific trip I have been to this event before and it is well worth it The several-hour affair features an open bar Morimoto Maui is the hotel’s signature restaurant daily and features a variety of Asian cuisine so be sure to make reservations as soon as possible It is especially popular in the sunset hours I had a tempura shrimp appetizer to start (which was so delicious and I’d highly recommend making a reservation if you can Hot Tip: Make a reservation at Morimoto in advance of your stay you can be sure you dine during the evening sunset I thought the service at this hotel was really well done though there were a few slip-ups — mainly with the concierge I had another issue that I think is worth noting I was informed that daily housekeeping would occur and that there were no restrictions I called down to the front desk and requested it housekeeping again didn’t service the room I spoke to the housekeeping manager who claimed that I requested no service throughout the stay I told her that I wanted the room serviced every day and if there were any notes refusing service to please remove those and I sent an email to the on-duty manager complaining about the issue I received a phone call from the head of security advising me that my do not disturb light on the door had been on for several days and he wanted to check on my well-being I went to the front door and told him it wasn’t on — and told him I had actually never turned it on at all throughout my whole stay He said he would have someone check it out the front desk manager called to apologize for the lack of housekeeping but he told me they never came because they saw the do not disturb indication on the door I told the manager the same thing I told the head of security and he agreed to check it out as well and personally ensure I would receive service for the remainder of my stay This whole lack of housekeeping really left a sour taste in my mouth It seemed like a combination of technical problems and miscommunication I think it’s worth mentioning so others are aware of the potential for issues signage informed me of the requirement to wear masks though admittedly there were a lot of people not doing so so I think guests assumed that everything was pretty much outside There were numerous hand sanitizer stations throughout the hotel and they were especially handy at the restaurants and high touchpoint areas (such as the gym) there weren’t a lot of noticeable precautions being taken Because the hotel is open to the fresh air I never felt confined or within such a crowded space where I felt worried The staff was very good about wearing their masks I still felt the property did what they could given the current situation I would return back to the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort in a heartbeat — the location along the ocean is unbeatable and I love how it is walking distance from major shops The suite I was in was large and great for a lengthy stay and the restaurant options on-site were great for my needs While an expensive World of Hyatt redemption I’d definitely save my points to be able to stay here again Be sure you book your spot well in advance as this event fills up fast It is about 16 miles from the airport to the hotel There are plenty of kid-friendly activities on-site While there are some areas reserved for adults The kids’ club is currently closed due to COVID-19 James (Jamie) started The Forward Cabin blog to educate readers about points He’s spoken at Princeton University and The New York Times Travel Show and has been quoted in dozens of travel publications has only competed in two hunter derbies throughout her career but continued her 100% win streak by topping the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby with Jennifer Bliss aboard on Friday of Week 7 at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) “She’s only done two national derbies and she’s won both of them,” Bliss said of the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare who took naturally to the grass derby field at Wellington International “She came to us last fall and didn’t have a lot of experience at all We wanted her to feel confident and have a good experience out there on the field today as it was her first time and I’m so proud of how she rose to the occasion.” Wailea cruised around Danny Moore’s hunt-and-go course to scores of 94 and 91 in the classic and handy portions of the round Her combined score of 185 gave her the win by a margin of just one point owned by Tracy Freels and ridden by Hannah Isop of Pawling claimed third with Morgan Van Nortwick of Reston “We all love this field,” Bliss continued of the change of scenery for derby action this week “We always plan our schedules a bit around these classes so we can do them I had not shown her on grass before so I wanted to get a read on how she’d handle it imported the mare and brought her into Bliss’s program to take her to the next level Bliss has loved the chance to get to know the horse and be part of its story “She is a bit unorthodox in that she is tiny and a bit spicy but we have all believed in her and tried to develop her in a really thoughtful way,” Bliss said of Wailea’s progress It’s a testament to the whole team: her owner for being so patient and supportive and my husband for the management of her care I’m the one in the ring but I could not get that result without all of their contributions.” the team behind Wailea has planned everything day by day so they’ll continue with that approach as the season goes on and then see what she continues to want to do “Everything we’ve asked of her so far she’s done nicely,” Bliss explained “The big thing this year was moving up to the 3’6” and she’s been so consistent she’s learned the handies and is very brave The plan for this year is to keep going with the 3’6” greens and perhaps next year step up to the International Derbies She’ll tell us what she wants to do but for the time being I joke that she’s my horse and I’m just doing as much as I can with her.” Kind words from within the team and outside of it really filled Bliss’s cup as she and Wailea finished for the day who was second and who I really respect as a rider as she also develops a lot of young horses was standing there as I came out of the ring today,” Bliss went on that horse has come so far.’ That meant a lot to me Bliss enjoys having the opportunity to stay in one place consistently while still competing at the highest levels and that’s why we chose to base here because we're able to show at a high level and sleep in our own beds for so much of the year My daughter is five and started kindergarten this year so from that perspective having some semblance of a normal To see full results from the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, presented by NetJets, click HERE Brendan Weiss scored a victory Friday on the field as well topping the Junior/Amateur section of the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby “I’ve been riding Jaguar for about a year and a half,” Weiss said of his partnership with the Dutch Warmblood gelding by I’m Special de Muze “I took about a 10-year break from riding and got back into it in 2023 I was lucky enough to get matched up with him and have owned him for the last eight months or so He’s a horse that tries to go out there and win every time and winning is his favorite thing Jaguar’s “all” led to scores of 91 and 92 for a combined 183 to take the top position Finishing second was Grace Carucci of Sheldon and in third was Henry Hollis of West Grove Both Jaguar and Weiss enjoyed the change of scenery and jumping on the grass derby field during WEF 7 “It’s a very nice opportunity for us to have a different ring and to jump on the grass,” he continued “I’d say only a couple times a year I get to do that and I think my horse really likes it It was a lot of fun out there and I think my horse enjoyed it too.” and Weiss knew to expect the horse to shine While the victory was still an exciting one he knows his horse can show off on a stage like this “It’s nice to come over here and get him excited again,” he said of the horse’s added flair in a derby on the grass “I think he knows when there’s an option so he can jump the bigger one and he likes when the jumps look a little different so he jumps a little harder and looks at them a little more.” he focused on his career in medical sales in New York City with limited access to horses Now that he’s established in his career and back in his hometown of Haverford he is diving in head first by flying down to Wellington every weekend of the season to compete “I moved back in 2020 and was lucky enough to start riding with Kim Buzby at Windfall Farm,” Weiss explained I think riding was a big portion of my adult life that I was missing I’m very grateful to be back in it and be with horses as much as I am now I never thought I was going to get to compete here and it keeps getting better and better To see full results from the Junior/Amateur section of the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, presented by NetJets, click HERE 3400 Equestrian Club Drive Wellington, FL, 33414Directions
