West Park Village will transform into a treasure trove as over 25 households participate in the community’s third annual garage sale event
the “Garage Sale Extravaganza.”
the one-day-only sale promises a diverse array of items from household goods to hidden gems
all spread throughout the neighbourhood among participating homes
“This will be the third year that we’ve done it,” said Jana Kitts
a West Park resident who has been instrumental in organizing the event
Everybody hosts their garage sales just to draw some foot traffic into the community.”
More than just an opportunity for area residents to declutter their garages
the sale also serves as a means to showcase the vibrant West Park Villa community
“We’re not doing anything to raise money or anything like that; it’s all just individuals (running their own garage sales at the same time),” Kitts said
The idea sprouted from a few casual conversations among neighbours and quickly gained momentum through a community Facebook page: “WestPark Community Garage Sale Extravaganza.”
Instead of each household organizing their own independent garage sales throughout the summer
everyone in the area can take advantage of a single major draw for the neighbourhood
Attendees can expect more than just great deals this time around
and Beaver Tails will be onsite to offer refreshments throughout the day
Kitts said this invitation is also meant to help small local businesses gain recognition and a few additional sales
which was a super hot weekend… I think each household had somewhere around four or five hundred people go through their garage,” Kitts recalled
I reached out to some local food trucks and said
if you don’t have anything going on this weekend… come park up here.’ It just makes for a really fun day.”
Visitors can start their journey at 1702 Eleventh Avenue Northwest — one of the first houses encountered upon entering West Park from Thatcher Drive
guests can explore the numerous sales throughout the neighbourhood as they proceed down the road
“At every street in the neighbourhood
you’ll be able to find garage sales,” Kitts noted
For updates and a list of participating addresses
interested individuals can visit the West Park Community Facebook page
Kitts said she plans to include a detailed map closer to the event date
For more information, updates, or to reach out to organizers, visit “WestPark Community Garage Sale Extravaganza” or message “Jana Kitts” on Facebook
The West Park Mall redevelopment is underway with new stores and a fresh look
but it’s too soon to measure its true economic impact or the value of significant public incentives. The Editorial BoardThe redevelopment of West Park Mall continues in May 2025
Only time will tell if the $100 million-plus project provides the increased tax revenues and enhanced shopping and entertainment options developers envisioned when they proposed the ambitious plan.Rick Fahr ~ rfahr@semissourian.comAs instant gratification becomes even more prevalent in our society
we simply have to wait and see what’s going to happen and whether the juice is worth the squeeze
That’s where we are with the redevelopment of West Park Mall — the project has begun
but we won’t know its full effects for some time
One thing is certain at this early stage: Even with construction in full swing
the property is more visually appealing than it was
The drab monolithic concrete structure is more colorful with new storefronts and will dramatically evolve more as out-parcel developments and landscaping add to the “new” feel
Fresh paint and vibrant signage alone won’t make the project worthwhile
The $100 million-plus project received several significant tax concessions from the City
with additional investment from Matthew Mills
asked for and received a tax increment financing designation
which allows the developers to share in increased sales tax revenues
as well as sales tax exemptions on construction materials (a savings estimated at about $3 million when approved in 2023)
the incentives could total about $50 million
which offers beauty products and salon services
Those are the kinds of businesses that add to Cape’s profile as a retailing hub for the region — offering specialty products and services to particular audiences in a way that perhaps existing businesses hadn’t fully addressed
Petsmart’s location is a short dog walk from Rural King
and only a few minutes from PetCo on Siemers Drive and Busch Pet Products on Cape La Croix Road
During the municipal debate about the mall redevelopment project
the idea of “cannibalization” — a new store pulling customers from existing businesses without drawing new customers spending additional dollars — was a concern
The developers and their representatives contended at the time that the mall’s tenants would represent new
not simply cutting its slices in different ways
It remains to be seen how that will bear out
We hope the completed project fills the mall with businesses offering products and services not readily available in Cape Girardeau and that those businesses serve existing customers and draw new ones from all directions
while also encouraging area residents to shop locally instead of online

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police is working to identify hotspots and increase patrols following nearly a dozen car break-ins in the city's West Park neighborhood in recent days
According to Cleveland Police Public Information Officer Wilfredo Diaz
10 cars were reported to have been broken into
"Officers are working to identify hot spots and are launching a strategic response
including increased foot and vehicle patrols
as well as covert investigations," Diaz said
We found Robert Delia waiting for his insurance company
He's got plastic covering his back passenger window
They weren't able to steal it and here we are
Delia lives off Montrose Avenue and West 144th Street in West Park
His neighbor down the street captured possible culprits on his doorbell camera when his jeep was targeted last week
That man says they smashed his work cell phone
Feels like it just won't quit," Delia said
Delia isn't sure what's next at his house but would like more help from the police
they want to see how much they can take out of the neighborhood here
We have cameras and they commit the crimes anyway," Dalia said
The Cleveland Division of Police is working with the city council to help "address concerns and implement preventative measures."
Cleveland Ward 17 Councilman Charles Slife said those measures include additional surveillance in the area to combat crime
"I’m aware of vehicle vandalism and thefts and maintain close communication with CPD on this issue
District 1 leadership continues to prioritize crime impacting our neighborhood and have been increasing patrols and surveillance at my request," Slife said

A 21-year-old woman walking late Thursday in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue was sexually assaulted by a man now in custody
A 19-year-old man in custody for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint late Thursday night in Rogers Park is also a person of interest in a string of robberies and sexual assaults in West Ridge
A 21-year-old woman was walking in the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue shortly after 11 p.m
pulled out a knife and sexually assaulted her
The man fled — possibly on a bicycle — and the woman went to a police station to report the assault

Responding officers took a 19-year-old man into custody
and a police spokesperson confirmed he is the same person allegedly linked to a string of violent sexual attacks and robberies since December
Residents of the 1800 block of West Lunt Avenue told the Sun-Times they were surprised to hear about the attack on their block and others in the area
“That was kind of shocking,” said Irving Zucker
who has lived in Rogers Park for about 50 years
but I can imagine how some people would be really freaked out by what happened because it is really a terrible thing,” said Zucker

The inclusion of skatepark footage in a video part can be a dubious subject
but one with generally agreed upon parameters
it’s a no-brainer: who would argue a John Cardiel part would be better without ramps
provided that they’re rough enough around the edges
rather than unsanctioned versions of a conventional skatepark
or has an unintentional route to be exploited
Aaron Loreth has popularized his local skatepark beyond those confines by frequenting the somewhat bank-to-wall / somewhat vert extension of Ventura’s West Park: an obstacle that appears so impractical and frightening to skate that its legitimacy in a video part has been unanimously unchallenged since the first Call Me 917 video
Those who began skating with an 2000s-era skatepark as a local will likely know the feeling of making the best out of whatever sorry excuse of concrete (or pre-fab) landed in your neighborhood
Perhaps this contributes to why Aaron’s footage at West Park has resonated so strongly over the years
The other being the dissonance between what is
a few feet of vert sticking out of a crater in the ground and Aaron’s ability to skate it with pure grace
Supported by Stüssy
There was a time in the late 90’s where West Park (East End
were the only legal municipal concrete structures in Southern California
The “moping” bank/bowl design reminds of both Benecia and Palo Alto’s 80’s parks
that style actually dates back to the very first generation of mid ’70s skateparks which at the time were meant to mimic the famous mini reservoir street spots (VC Bowl
etc) that were initially built for small private farms in mid 20th Century or earlier

Ravenna City Schools notified parents on Friday that it will close West Park Elementary School at the end of the current term
The district's Board of Education voted on the closure of the building that opened in 1960
It has been a kindergarten building since 1997
Superintendent Ben Ribelin said the building will be repurposed
Kindergarten students will move to Willyard Elementary School in Ravenna Township next school year
Willyard now houses first- and second-graders
Kindergarten teachers are to be moved to Willyard
"As we are working through our financial difficulties
we are setting up a building plan that will establish more feasible buildings so we can fill them completely because they are not at full capacities," he told the Board of Education on Jan
27 before its unanimous vote on the closure
Ribelin said the district would continue to offer all-day kindergarten at Willyard
and that the district would provide more information in the weeks ahead to answer questions and "provide further details about the consolidation plan and how it will impact students
He stated that the change was part of an effort to "maximize the resources available to our students" while maintaining a high standard of education
and was part of a "district-wide consolidation plan" designed to strengthen the district's stability
we have seen a steady decline in enrollment
we must adapt to the current and future needs of our community in a way that allows us to continue providing a high-quality education for all students across Ravenna," he stated
"While this is not a decision we take lightly
it is necessary in order to ensure that the district is able to manage its resources wisely and contribute to the overall financial health of the Ravenna School District
We are committed to being fiscally responsible and supporting our community by making decisions that align with the long-term success of all of our schools."
Ribelin said the district has an enrollment of 1,750 students
school vouchers and open enrollment for the loss of students
which was 295 when Ravenna closed Tappan Elementary School in 2013
has been at 120 students the past two years
The district was placed under the Ohio State Auditor's Office's fiscal caution list in 2024
voters rejected the district's fourth consecutive levy request
Ravenna City Schools hasn't received new operating funds for 20 years
the board once again will seek levy funding
asking for a 5.47-mill levy that would bring in $2.75 million annually
and cost homeowners less than $16 per month per $100,000 in home value
The district decided to request less on this attempt after voters rejected an 8.31-mill
five-year levy that would have raised $3.25 million each year
is the district will be receiving slightly higher revenues after an increase in property valuations
The district also is saving money because of building consolidations
This is the fourth building the district has closed since the early 2000s
The former Ravenna High School, at East Main and Clinton Streets, was demolished in 2012, and the property was sold to the City of Ravenna in 2022 for a future safety building and city hall
In 2013, the district closed Tappan Elementary School, and it now is leased to Education Alternatives. Education Alternatives bought the former Board of Education office in 2020
saying it would be used as a counseling center
and the remaining elementary buildings were reorganized
The Carlin building now houses the district's Board of Education offices
That building opened in 1915 as the Ravenna Township School
and is the oldest building in the district

Welcome to Nighthawks — a biweekly series where writer Sam Brule travels to noteworthy nightlife epicenters across New York City to observe and report about the night
we’re at the West Park Presbyterian Church in the Upper West Side to find a reason to celebrate
and exchanging niceties with bothersome relatives weigh on everyone
amid all the stress that comes along with colder weather
I’m setting off to find one as my semester at school comes to an end
I trekked in the playfully cold mid-fall evening all the way to 86th Avenue
My destination was the historic West Park Presbyterian Church
The Teeth are an energetic and eclectic band from Philadelphia who found their cult popularity among a scene of college-age young adults in the early 2000s
and enjoyed by enough people to support their tours more than 20 years after they first released music
On the north side of the building were middle-aged adults dressed in modestly fancy attire
reserved conversations and firm handshakes when friends met up with each other — body language that didn’t suggest pre-concert excitement
so I figured they might be here for something else.
the west side of the building sprouted a line of people ranging from teenagers to older adults
They donned yellow and black checkered flannels
and their energy was excited despite the increasing chill of the fall evening
One wore a thrashed tank top with text that was once legible but now stood as cracked and crumbled splotches of ink
A pair of deep blue jeans stuck to their legs and bunched up towards their black sneakers
Their friend wore a similar but more worn pair of black sneakers
I caught only slight pieces of their conversation
but they were clearly excited to be at the show.
I began to wonder what the situation with this church was
so how did they end up playing a show inside a historic New York church
According to The Center at West Park’s website
the church began openly accepting LGBTQ+ members
which began the legacy of social justice that it’s known for today.
The West Park Presbyterian Church housed artists and activists throughout the years and supported minority members of society
the church served hundreds of meals a day to people living with AIDS.
the church stays true to its roots in social justice by helping out the community and continuing to support the arts
It hosts plays and musical performances as a means of sharing art with the community
While the auditorium was brimming with anticipation for the band to start
the executive director of The Center at West Park
“The church is not shutting down,” Hirshman said
I was instantly thrown into a dramatic property battle I had known nothing about
According to Hirshman, Alchemy Properties attempted to purchase the church, tear it down, and build real estate where it once lay. However, thanks to Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, Missy Yager, and a benefit play reading starring all of them
enough money and awareness were raised to oppose the sale of the church and keep it open for years to come.
The audience erupted in applause as Hirshman looked content with the church’s success
She went on to give a few more acknowledgments and one specific rule before the show began
but please remain in your seats and don’t crowd the aisles,” Hirshman said before exiting the stage to be quickly replaced by The Teeth
Around the auditorium were swaths of fans with their eyes glued to the band
and not a single one of them seemed to be willing to stay seated during the performance
It’s as if everyone was waiting for the first brave attendee to leave their seat before they could follow suit and disobey the sitting-only rule.
which was met with an audience-wide singalong and another loud burst of applause as the track came to an end
“You’re My Lover Now,” brought the energy way up — and that was enough for the audience to explode out of their seats
all the attendees quickly stood up and crowded the stage
It was a jumbled mass of eager people crowding together
They were screaming the lyrics as if they wrote the songs themselves
It was quite a sight to see such extreme excitement in a building designed for reserved worship
Hirshman even stopped the music to try and tell everyone to return to their seats
but no one really listened and the energy continued on for the remainder of the concert.
The music echoed off the walls to create an almost cave-like reverb effect
which bounced around and boomed into everyone’s ears
The two teenagers from earlier caught my attention as they jumped around wildly while filming a shaky video of the performance
The action of the audience meshed together into a wave
a man and woman were hailed to the stage as everyone waited patiently to see what would happen
They fit the younger crowd with their skinny jeans and homemade band merch
and the audience exploded into applause once again
which was followed by the band playing some more
All throughout the night, themes of celebrations were present
The only signs of discontent I noticed were the people behind me booing as the band took a quick break
It was during this break that I decided to leave
and I had seen enough celebration for one night
I shuffled my way through the crowding fans and got through the door
Outside of the venue were a few more fans who deemed that it was a good time for a break
but the warmth of the church’s interior lingered long enough to make it to the nearest subway station
which has dedicated the past few decades to helping people
will now be able to continue doing so while also hosting musical performances for everyone to see

All buildings from Safelite to Little Caesars are included in the sale
according to Sluss Realty co-owner Jami Kinton-Sluss
The 17.4-acre property went live on the market Friday afternoon
"Colossal Opportunity to revitalize the heart of Mansfield's 'Miracle Mile.' This property houses an expansive strip mall encompassing over 179,000 square feet and spanning over 17 acres with high visibility offering 1,127 foot frontage and currently 1,265 parking spaces," its MLS listing stated
"Surrounded by both new and established businesses
and anchored by Little Caesar's and Safelite
this property is on a direct route linking Mansfield and Ontario
making it a prosperous location for a vast variety of new or expanding business ventures
The possibilities are virtually endless for this location with multiple zoning options possible..
Bring your vision to enliven this iconic property once again."
"It's a genuine honor to be entrusted with the sale of this signature Mansfield property — and to truly help shape the future of the 'Miracle Mile,'" Realty Broker Grant Sluss said
"We have already met with Mayor Jodie Perry and look forward to working closely with the city of Mansfield
to revitalize this area and turn it into a place the community can be proud of once again."
The Mansfield Planning Commission voted in 2023 to give West Mansfield Realty a 90-day extension on the demolition order for two-thirds of the vacant strip mall and massive asphalt parking lot at 1157 Park Avenue West known as the West Park Shopping Center
"West Mansfield Realty was given 90 days to determine if they have a buyer for the property
they will be back at planning commission," said Adrian Ackerman
director of permitting and development for the City of Mansfield
that buyer will be required to come to planning commission and get approval to buy the property."
The unanimous commission vote came after discussions via Zoom with attorneys and representatives for West Mansfield Realty
which is part of the New York-based Namdar Realty Group
the News Journal took a closer look at the vacant storefronts in the West Park Shopping Center and found a dirty canopy in the vacant strip mall
two-thirds of the strip mall along Park Avenue West had been scheduled for demolition
Namdar attorneys made it clear they didn't believe the city has the right to order the demolition of the parking lot and said “litigation is imminent” after a commission meeting in August 2023
which in years past was a bustling center of activity
20-acre shopping complex that opened in 1952
hailed in News Journal archives as "the first suburban shopping center to be built in this area."

Jayden Mcneal will be playing up the middle
They have got lots of options on the mound with Zobel
& Ortez who are all looking to contribute as starters
& Del Oro so that should be a real test to see if this team can put together their very talented roster
Looking forward to catching a couple games to see West Park

NY — A community arts center at a landmark Upper West Side church at risk of displacement has a secret weapon in its fight for survival: The Avengers
Specifically, Black Widow actor Scarlett Johansson and Incredible Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo will join Julianna Margulies to lead a staged reading of "Network," an award-winning screenplay, to benefit the nonprofit arts center at the West-Park Presbyterian Church which is under threat of being displaced by the owners
a nonprofit arts and culture hub that has turned the church into an affordable space for cultural programming
the building's owners have been in talks to sell the building to developers
who could potentially displace the thriving arts community and knock the building down
according to the nonprofit's "Love Our Landmarks" campaign
In 2023, there was a series of hearings with the city, where developers requested permits to demolish the building, which were denied for the time being in early 2024, according to several reports
This is the kind of neighborhood fight that usually draws block associations
local councilmembers and community boards to the front lines
because Ruffalo was interested in using a sculpting studio in the church
the fight is playing out a little differently
"One of the very significant developments in May 2023 was that Mark Ruffalo was referred to me because he was sculpting and wanted a sculpting studio," Debby Hirshman
"He had the very same reaction as I did when he learned the whole story about the hearings that had taken place."
"When you look at how we got to the present
it is that each of these people brought new people into the importance of this space," Hirshman said
and Kenneth Lonergan have been involved in activism for the nonprofit
This Monday, Johansson, Fisher Stevens, Keegan-Michael Key and Josh Hamilton will also join the ranks of supporters, according to the flyer
with arts and culture being an economic driver in New York
spaces like the Center at West Park are fundamental to the future generation of artists who will perform on Broadway," Hirshman said
"Preserving those in New York is critical to also continuing to build audiences."
"Network," which premiered in 1976 as a film
was adapted for the stage by Lee Hall and made its Broadway debut in 2018 and earned a Tony Award for Bryan Cranston
The full cast will participate in a talkback following each performance
Monday's performance will be the latest public program in The Center’s “Love Our Landmarks: Save West Park Presbyterian Church” campaign
created to raise awareness of The Center’s ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the 135-year-old church
All funds raised at the event will support the Center’s programs and preservation efforts
Tickets start at $75 for the staged reading
but there are a number of pay-what-you-wish tickets as well
West-Park Presbyterian Church is located at 165 West 86th St

The former Walmart in West Park Plaza on Lincoln Avenue will see new life and development in the coming months and years
The Charleston City Council unanimously approved a zoning change to the property at last week’s meeting
The changes took less than five minutes to approve out of the brief 14-minute meeting
The council approved a second ordinance to divide the plaza into different land parcels to accommodate the development
The changes will allow for a new climate-controlled storage center and the construction of a new indoor pickleball facility at the back of the property
A food court will also be added to the property next to Magic Wok
City Manager Scott Smith could not confirm what restaurants may be added
as the project is still in the conceptual stages
The construction is set to occur in phases
The facilities will have a modern aesthetic featuring vibrant colors
The storage facility is likely to begin construction this fall
with the pickleball facility and food court being constructed sometime in 2025
Smith said that building permits for the property have not yet been submitted
Other changes such as additional parking spaces at the back of the plaza and new landscaping will also potentially be added
City ordinances require a percentage of land used for commercial development for landscaping proportioned to the property’s size
A property the size of the plaza requires 15% of the used land to be dedicated to landscaping
Much of the building has remained vacant since the Walmart Supercenter was built on the eastern edge of town in 2000
A portion of the old property became a Habitat for Humanity resale store
Other retail spaces in the plaza are also vacant
which the city aims to have filled with other stores and offices because of the development
The project is being led by Chicago-based Spring Property Management LLC
according to property records obtained from the Coles County Assessor’s office
Multiple requests for comment from the developer were not returned
Smith said the developer is not seeking financial assistance from the city for the project
Multiple requests for comment from Mayor Brandon Combs and members of the Charleston City Council were not returned
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States
such as the dimensions of the court being different
having a different sized net and the use of a flat paddle that is larger than a tennis racket
The sport was created in Washington state in 1965 by Joel Pritchard and two of his friends
It was designated as the state sport of Washington in 2022
there are approximately 12,000 known locations to play pickleball across the country
Florida and Texas have the most pickleball courts
Illinois ranks sixth in the nation with approximately 400 locations to play the sport
