five Sydney seats – the same tally as the Liberal Party in the city On election night she stopped short of claiming the seat of Bradfield Boele told her supporters on election night “we have made Australian political history” In 2022, the independent narrowly lost the North Shore seat to Liberal MP Paul Fletcher, who didn’t contest the 2025 election following a redistribution and amid polling Hughes Labor candidate and former political adviser David Moncrieff delivered a stunning 12 per cent swing on his primary vote consigning incumbent MP Jenny Ware to a single term in parliament With One of the many surprises of the night has been Hughes, an unexpected gain for Labor from the Liberal Party. Most of the inner-city independents look to have held their seats. Coupled with Labor's victory in Bennelong, that means the Liberal Party continues to hold none of the seats overlooking Sydney Harbour, its former heartland. At the start of the campaign the Liberal Party was hoping to pick up a swag of seats in Melbourne. They look to have gone backwards instead. Keith Wolahan is in trouble in Menzies, and shadow housing minister Michael Sukkar has been defeated in Deakin. Labor has made some serious gains in the Sunshine State. The win in Peter Dutton's seat of Dickson will grab the headlines, but they've also picked up nearby seats like Petrie and Longman, as well as Bonner and Forde. Labor has picked up the eastern suburbs seat of Sturt, defeating Liberal MP James Stevens. That result means that Labor now holds every single seat in metropolitan Adela Western Australia has swung to Labor more modestly than the other states, but remember, that comes after a massive statewide swing of 10.5 per cent at the last election in 2022. The government looks to have gained another seat in the west too, Moore, while Independent Kate Chaney is on track to hold her beachside seat of Curtin. The apple isle has been a stand-out for the government, recording easily the largest swings of the states. And the Liberals have been wiped out. They've lost Braddon, and second-term MP Bridget Archer has also been defeated in the seat of Bass. The Coalition was hoping it could gain at least one of the Top End's two seats but Labor looks to have retained both. Bean has turned out to be the most interesting race in the ACT. Independent Jessie Price has come second on first preferences, and further counting will be needed to know the winner. The other two seats in the territory have been held by Labor. While the Liberal presence in Sydney has halved, in Melbourne the party has lost Menzies and Deakin to Labor, leaving them with almost no presence in the Melbourne metropolitan area. A win for Labor in Sturt in Adelaide leaves the Liberals with no metro seats in South Australia. Professor Smith said the depleted Liberal presence in the cities makes it difficult for the party to position itself as more centrist, with few MPs on the ground there. "That presents a real problem for the party to be competitive over this next term in a way that resonates with sections of the Australian electorate that they need to win back." Mr Samaras said the loss of Liberal metro seats represented a "deep, structural demographic crisis" for the Coalition. "It's no longer faring well in urbanised younger constituencies and education doesn't seem to be the dividing line that it used to be," he said. With personal debts of more than $2.8 billion, controversial property developer Sam Fayad has attained the unfortunate record of what is believed to be the largest bankruptcy in Australian history. Much of the debt is due to Fayad giving personal guarantees on business loans for his failed development empire. On New Year’s Eve in 2020, the Dyldam group, with dozens of associated companies, went bust owing millions of dollars to the Australian Taxation Office. Subcontractors went unpaid, and buildings were riddled with defects. Among Fayad’s debts is $46.5 million owed to the ATO. His wife, Maria, owes the ATO $24.4 million, and she has also failed to pay her sister-in-law, Carol Khattar, a judgment debt of $21.5 million. Also facing bankruptcy are the Fayads’ two sons, Remon and Fayad-Lee, who have combined tax debts worth more than $20 million. But bankruptcy appears to be no impediment to the Fayad family. Last July, Sam and Maria Fayad flew first class to Italy to attend The four-day-long festivities were estimated to cost more than $3 million. A Herald investigation can reveal that Fayad, 65, appears to have another plan on the boil to avoid paying creditors, with the supposed sale of their western Sydney mansion. “Commanding uninterrupted panoramas of the Parramatta skyline, this grand seven-bedroom masterpiece sets a new standard for luxury living,” reads the advertising campaign for Sam and Maria’s property in Constitution Hill. According to Fayad’s 142-page statement of affairs filed for his bankruptcy, I Properties has loaned him more than $21 million. However, Rami Ayoub, sole director and shareholder of I Properties, has been alleged in court to be a front for the Fayads. Corporate documents list the company’s registered office as that of Sam Fayad’s longtime tax lawyers, Pope and Spinks. How Ayoub’s company came to lend that amount of money to Sam and Maria Fayad remains a mystery, as there have been numerous caveats lodged on Ayoub’s own properties by State Revenue NSW for unpaid taxes. Ayoub, who has twice staved off bankruptcy, runs a business associated with recycled tyres. In 2019, he offered a property owned by his company, Sustainable Rubber Technologies, as security for $1 million to obtain bail for his relative Torek Ayoub, who was facing charges of being an accessory after the fact to the killing of 15-year-old Brayden Dillon. Torek, 29, was gunned down in Parramatta last August. Rami Ayoub, 58, as the vendor of the Fayads’ Constitution Hill mansion, has determined it will be sold by “expressions of interest”. The Special Gold proceedings, which are being funded by the ATO, relate to the $74 million sale of a building owned by the company in Parramatta. In late 2020, Fayad’s now estranged business partner and brother-in-law Joe Khattar, also now bankrupt, took legal action over the proposed sale of the Argyle Street property. The court heard that without her knowledge, Khattar’s wife Chahida had been removed as a director of Special Gold and replaced by her brother Sam Fayad. Khattar was also furious that Special Gold had agreed with the ATO to use the sale of Argyle Street to pay off Fayad’s various tax debts and the debts of several of their associated companies. On December 17, 2020, Supreme Court Justice Ashley Black ordered that the ATO should receive the $33 million it was owed in taxes and penalties, but the rest of the profits from the sale should be frozen. But before the week was out, Sam Fayad is alleged to have breached those orders. The sale of the Parramatta property was finalised on December 22, 2020. Not only was no tax paid, but millions of dollars allegedly flowed into various entities associated with Fayad and his sons. More than $4.5 million of the proceeds went into companies associated with Rami Ayoub. According to land title documents, it appears some of the Argyle Street proceeds were used by I Properties to buy a property in Carlingford from another of the Fayads’ failed companies. A decade ago, a Herald investigation revealed that Fayad had an aversion to paying tax. Dozens of his special-purpose companies would complete a development, having paid his company Dyldam handsomely for construction services, several units would be transferred to family and friends, and then the company would collapse owing the ATO millions of dollars. Frustrated liquidators have expressed their fury at the lack of action by corporate regulators. Prominent liquidator Stephen Hathway, who has previously described Dyldam’s directors as “masterminds of manipulation”, has complained that the only penalty Fayad has received is a $6000 fine for failing to provide books and records to another liquidator. Brad Schumacher exited the pits in third in the #888 Kelso Electrical Audi but had a big lock-up and ran wide into the grass at turn 2 While Schumacher went about chasing those ahead to recover his Upon disembarking the US Marine Corps helicopter at the White House, Trump praised Albanese when asked by this masthead about the Australian election. “Albanese, I’m very friendly with,” Trump said. “I don’t know anything about the election other than the man that won, he’s very good.” Asked about as “not the act of a friend”, and whether they would soon speak, Trump said: “I can only say that he’s been very, very nice to me, very respectful to me. “I have no idea who the other person is that ran against him, and, you know, we [Albanese and I] have had a very good relationship.” Trump said he did not know whether he had an impact on the Australian election result. Some analysts have suggested the Coalition’s declining popularity could be partly attributed to an association with the US president and his conservative policies, or voters flocking to the incumbent due to the uncertainty created by Trump. A White House readout of the phone call was not immediately available, and the president had not yet posted about the call on his Truth Social page, as he sometimes does when he speaks to world leaders. Other world leaders who have offered their congratulations on social media include British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “In an increasingly divided world, Canada and Australia are close partners and the most reliable of friends,” Carney wrote on X. “We have the opportunity to build on that relationship and our shared values to the benefit of both our nations, and I look forward to it.” Carney, who took over from Justin Trudeau, last week despite the party being well behind in the polls months earlier, when under Trudeau. The North Sydney Bears drew their biggest crowd in decades to North Sydney Oval over the weekend, as speculation mounted about a possible NRL return for the storied foundation club. A crowd of 2,259 attended the Round Nine NSW Cup clash against the New Zealand Warriors, marking the Bears’ first home game of the season due to the late handover of the venue from cricket. It was their largest home crowd since their final NRL seasons prior to the club’s exclusion in 1999. A post shared by North Sydney Sun (@north.sydney.sun) This year’s delay in returning to Bear Park came with added anticipation following reports that the Western Australian Government and the NRL had reached an in-principle agreement to base a reincarnated NRL Bears team in Perth from the 2027 season WA premier Roger Cook last week described the discussions as “positive” and said the state government looked forward to them continuing the club capitalised on the momentum with a full slate of junior gala matches and a strong showing from local community groups Sponsors including St Leonards-based disability provider Danny Met Sally and Artarmon’s Depot Brewery were visible around the ground while Mary’s House Services hosted a marquee The Hills and Mollie Dive Stand were filled to capacity with additional spectators crowding the O’Reilly and Bob Stand A post shared by North Sydney Bears (@northsydneybearsofficial) While the Bears fell 14–56 to the Warriors on the field Sentiment around the bid suggests an official announcement could be imminent with finer details reportedly being negotiated around ownership structure and operational responsibilities between the WA government A post shared by North Sydney Sun (@north.sydney.sun) Media reports have suggested that the club may already be sounding out coaching and playing talent ahead of a potential re-entry into the national competition The Australian Financial Review reported that existing NRL clubs could be offered a one-off payment of $500,000 if the Bears meet or exceed commercial expectations in their first season back as a way to gain broader support for the expansion Crowd-pulling potential may also prove persuasive with Norths demonstrating last year they could still draw strong Sydney attendance—attracting more than 10,000 fans to their NSW Cup Grand Final appearance against Newtown The club’s next home game at North Sydney Oval is scheduled for Sunday 18 May at 3:00PM Their straight-up pastrami beef and pickles sando is hard to go past – especially if what you're craving is a proper NYC-style sandwich – but we'd never say no to their monthly rotation of sandwich specials either A post shared by Teta’s Deli 🌹 (@tetas.kingscross) And while you're there enjoying your lunch you can peruse (and purchase) from their deli wall – from Teta's best-selling chilli sauce to jars of preserved baby eggplant A post shared by South Dowling Sandwiches (@southdowlingsandwiches) Another cult fave around these parts is South Dowling – who've been in the sando game for over 15 years They tout the Australia’s #1 Best Sandwich title on their website A favourite of a few of our RUSSH Editors for its freshness light and fluffy bread Sicilian-style bread (baked fresh each day) we'd recommend giving this one a red hot crack when you get a chance (Just mind the queues – they're worth it.) Hundreds of cars heading towards Sydney had their tyres puncture following the spill about 5am. The motorway is closed while the truck company assists with the clean up, which is expected to take several hours. Link copiedShareShare articleAll southbound lanes of the M1 Pacific Motorway have reopened following a massive clean up of small metal shards which damaged hundreds of cars. The motorway was closed for hours between Ourimbah and Mount White on the NSW Central Coast, after a truck lost its metal load early this morning. Those motorists who drove through the area after five am before the road was closed are being urged to get their tyres checked, in case of undetected damage. Authorities were forced to close the road about 5am after the truck lost the metal between Palmdale and the Mooney Mooney Bridge. An almost 30-kilometre stretch of the motorway was closed between Ourimbah and the Calga Interchange. Earlier today NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said it was a unique incident. "This is an unprecedented situation," she said. "We are working with all the resources of government and the private sector to do the clean up. The motorway clean-up has taken all day. (ABC News) The minister said the priority is clearing a backlog of B-double trucks unable to turn around. "That will ease the congestion," she said. "We are looking at a very protracted situation, we're talking hours and potentially to the end of day." NSW Police confirmed they received reports that more than 300 vehicles had been damaged by the metal shards. Police and the Transport Management Centre (TMC) are launched a significant operation to clear the motorway. TMC coordinator Howard Collins said there were currently "traffic tailbacks" stretching for up to 40 kilometres. Shards of metal found on the M1 motorway. "The backdoor of that vehicle has come open and spread thousands of pieces of sharp metal all across the motorway," he said. "Hundreds of vehicles have had their tyres punctured by this metal. "I've seen photographs [of] multiple tyres, so it's no use changing one tyre, because three or four have gone." Traffic built up on the M1 motorway heading south. (Supplied: Transport for NSW) Trucking company NJ Ashton from Horsley Park in Sydney's west said one of its trucks was responsible for the spill. Company spokesperson Daniel Falconer said the driver set off south towards Sydney this morning with 40 tonnes of scrap metal on the back, with some of the material spilling from the back. Heavy traffic has built up on the M1 motorway heading south towards Sydney. (Supplied: Transport for NSW) He said the driver, who had been doing the journey for the past three months, loaded the truck yesterday afternoon and there were no signs of a problem. "He didn't see it, he didn't know … We don't know exactly how it's been done, a mechanical error of some sort," Mr Falconer said. "Definitely our problem, we take full responsibility. "'If anyone needs any assistance, we'll be paying for everything through our insurance." Drivers were left stranded and waiting for help after their tyres were pierced by the debris from a truck on the M1 southbound from the NSW Central Coast to Sydney. NSW Police said a 46-year-old male truck driver was assisting officers. Mr Collins said the company would also assist with the clean-up. "The boss, apparently, is sending sweepers, a sort of magnetic device which picks up the metal, because it's going to take us hours to do this," he said. "It really is a difficult job, never seen it before, hopefully never again." Emergency services will assist the TMC with removing cars from the motorway. One motorist found these shards of metal in his tyre. (Supplied: Luke Pullen) Motorist Jon Heaney described the situation as "pandemonium". "Cars are scattered, they're all on the verge ... some are in the slow lane," he said. Another motorist told the ABC a warning about the incident came too late for scores of drivers who ran over the metal in foggy conditions. And the roads minister Jenny Aitchison has wrapped up her press conference about the chaos on the M1.
