At stake will be Xhoxhaj’s belt and another minor title held by Aliev, who was born in Moscow but raised in France. Aliev has been promoted by Ahmet Oener's Arena Box Promotion, which for the past few years has worked with the "new" Universum Box Promotion headed by Ismail Oezen-Otto.
When it comes to titles, Oener has concentrated on WBC subtitles, and Aliev is already ranked as the No. 10 heavyweight by that sanctioning body, while Xhoxhaj can be found at No. 18.

After seizure in Hamburg of 16 tonnes of high-purity powder
state attorney is accused of being on payroll of gang he was supposed to be prosecuting
200,000-tonne cargo ships almost a quarter of a mile long
piled high with the same weight in shipping containers
Cranes slowly offload the metal boxes packed with everything from raw materials to food and electronics
Between 2018 and 2023 cocaine seizures rose by 750%, marking out Germany as another major European hub in the ever-expanding global trade
But the influx is not just ramping up addiction
it is also fuelling corruption in a country perceived as being one of the least corrupt in the world
“We are seeing an infiltration of the port infrastructure in Hamburg, bribing of police officers in exchange for information and lately a state attorney awaiting trial for [allegedly] leaking information to a cocaine trafficking network,” said Daniel Brombacher, who runs the Europe bureau at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime
police announced Europe’s biggest ever seizure of cocaine at the port: 16 tonnes of high-purity powder stashed in 1,700 wall-putty tins shipped from Paraguay to Hamburg
The lead public prosecutor in that case was in court last week accused of being on the payroll of the same gang he was supposed to be prosecuting

is accused of leaking investigation details to the gang and warning suspects of their imminent arrest in return for €5,000 (£4,250) a month
He was arrested in October by police monitoring the gang’s encrypted communications – when police raided the network shortly after the Hamburg seizure
Yashar G is also accused of leaking sensitive information to other drug gangs
Cocaine production in Colombia and its consumption in western Europe are hitting record highs
So too is the money being made by European organised crime networks distributing a product worth more by weight than platinum
A kilo of cocaine is worth $2,000 in Colombia
but once in Europe its value rockets to an average of $40,000
Profits from this huge mark-up are not just spent on luxury cars and villas
but used to smooth the path for the next shipment as the gangster creep digs its tentacles into countries including the Netherlands
the European Union’s third largest port is one of its most targeted ports by drug gangs
Insiders known as hafeninnentäter (including dock and shipping workers
security guards and truck drivers) move the drugs unnoticed
Two Hamburg port workers were this month jailed for helping transport 480kg of cocaine from Ecuador and enabling a physical attack on a colleague who threatened the plot
Police have launched a publicity campaign to help port workers fend off drug gangs trying to recruit or extort them
but Hamburg’s port security forces feel so under threat they last year demanded submachine guns
In one incident Belgian police tipped off Hamburg’s port police that an armed French drug gang was planning a raid to recover seized cocaine

a former bouncer in the city’s red light district
said money from cocaine has become increasingly visible in the last five years
“Every weekend you see more and more young men in Ferraris
“This is not money earned from prostitution
A series of cases in Germany have also highlighted alleged corruption within police ranks: an officer in the south-western state of Baden-Württemberg arrested this month on suspicion of being on the Italian ‘Ndrangheta mafia’s payroll
a senior police officer in Hanover suspected of taking bribes from a drug trafficking network arrested in January
a drug squad officer arrested near Frankfurt in November on charges of “aiding and abetting” drug dealers and a police officer arrested in Bonn in August who was accused of passing classified information to members of the Dutch-Moroccan mafia
“The cocaine bonanza that we have witnessed in Germany and the EU in the past decade has led to an unprecedented influx of cash into organised crime,” said Brombacher
“Organised crime groups have never had so much venture capital available
and also never before such a strong incentive to invest in bribing to make sure the business keeps moving.”
View image in fullscreenShipping containers stacked in Hamburg port on 15 April
Photograph: Sean Gallup/Getty ImagesHamburg Port Authority said issues linked to port security were dealt with by Hamburg police
a spokesperson for the police said: “International organised criminal groups are often recruiting employees of the port industry in order to support the smuggling of cocaine from South America into Germany and Europe via the port of Hamburg
These so-called ‘internal port offenders’ are playing a particular key role in this kind of illegal drug importation.”
were “making significant efforts to combat this issue”
cases of bribed police officers have not been proven in Hamburg in this context.”
Organised crime experts have warned that the true nature of corruption brought by drug trafficking networks remains hidden
“Germany has found it very difficult to admit its problem with organised crime and still today it is largely in denial
The sudden influx of cocaine has just started to make the problem visible,” said Zora Hauser
a criminologist at the University of Cambridge whose book
about the rise of the ‘Ndrangheta in Germany
“It’s the perfect storm: a combination of fragmented policing
weak legislation especially in relation to money laundering
and excessive data protection have made Germany a paradise for criminal operations.”
But the authorities are being hopelessly outfought
Despite all the work by law enforcement in targeting the cocaine trade in Europe
When the Dutch spent €524m increasing port security in response to a wave of gangland executions linked to the cocaine trade
the gangs just switched to ports in France
Cocaine seizures at Hamburg were down in 2024
but the drug is still arriving in abundance: on small boats into smaller north German ports or via “parasite smuggling”
where cocaine is attached to the outside of cargo ship hulls and retrieved by divers at the destination port
But catching the gangsters themselves is not enough
and the search for corruption needs to go deeper
“Cocaine trafficking and the associated money laundering in Germany can only function on a large scale through corruption of public officials and other facilitators
But the focus of investigators is only on the perpetrators within the criminal networks,” said Robin Hofmann
a specialist in organised crime at Maastricht University
the search for the infiltration of cocaine money must be widened further “to the facilitators
local politicians and financial advisers who enable organised crime and profit from it”
This article was amended on 30 April 2025
An earlier version said cargo ships in Hamburg were almost half a mile long
during the so-called “Hamburg crucible” that forged them into a force ready to take over the world
Yet he fought tooth and nail against the release of Live
The recordings were made by Star-Club stage manager Adrian Barber at the behest of Ted “Kingsize” Taylor
a fellow Liverpool musician who’d played a run of shows with the Beatles with his band the Dominoes in late 1962
The Beatles had a foot out the door at this point and were only contracted to play the Star-Club based on a deal made much earlier by their manager
who’d molded the boys into pros by the time they played the shows we hear here
They’d already put out “Love Me Do” in October of that year
so it’s not like this is a recording of a band you can’t find anywhere in better fidelity
It’s exciting to hear them tear through a Dexedrine-tempo “Twist and Shout,” already in its final form, just waiting for a young John Hughes to have his mind blown by it
It’s a hoot to hear Star-Club co-owner Horst Fascher and his brother Fred as temporary Beatles
I Love Her So” and “Be-Bop-A-Lula” with the band in the boozy and low-key environment of a small club
As consistently good as their musicianship is
the performances may have been shakier than usual because the band was basically coasting at that point and ready to get back to England
The Star-Club is a container that cannot hold
But the great lacuna of the Beatles catalog is the music they made before this show: the lineups with Tommy Moore, Norman Chapman, Stuart Sutcliffe, and the other youths who passed through the Beatles in their pre-Fab days; the alleged hour-long versions of “What’d I Say” they’d improvise to pass the time; a piss-drunk John Lennon imitating Hitler with a comb as a mustache and haranguing the “Krauts” in the audience
if the misanthropic onstage behavior of GG Allin and Hanatarash seem heroic to you
this might be your favorite era of the band’s career
even if its only recorded legacy is this relatively tame and half-hearted show
his creativity inflamed by both the skeeviness of his surroundings and the echoes of the many Lewis songs the Beatles played there on their way to stardom
Myth tends to paint pre-Beatles Britain as a dreary little world where skiffle and trad jazz were the hottest things in town and all the rock’n’roll bands had some kind of gimmick like Johnny Kidd’s eye patch
A look at the Liverpool scene in those days paints a different picture
Liverpool was primed to receive records and gear from America
and the large Afro-Caribbean community in the Toxteth district meant it was easy to hear live jazz and calypso
estimated the city had 350 working bands in 1960
With the encouragement of a young Brian Epstein
a former art student named Bill Harry launched a paper called Mersey Beat that gave its name to the rising tide of guitar music in Liverpool
What if George hadn’t quit his electrician’s apprenticeship and its promise of career security to stake his future on being in a band
His genius was as an instrumentalist rather than a songwriter
but that’s not necessarily a lesser kind of genius; the idea that it is may be one of the things that shifted once the Beatles inspired other bands to write their own songs
includes not just chestnuts they’d make their own on subsequent recordings (“Twist and Shout,” “A Taste of Honey”) but also maudlin standards their parents might have liked
A jaunty version of “Red Sails in the Sunset” can’t hide the song’s corniness
and even this deep in the band’s Hamburg run
they still seem a bit confused about how to approach the bolero standard “Bésame Mucho.” (The answer: Go speed-punk on the chorus.) But hearing them so close to ripshit takes on “Nothin’ Shakin’” and “Kansas City” is reminiscent of the way Paul’s “granny songs” like “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” would bump up so close to Lennon freakouts like “I Want You”––and the subsequent years of arguing among fans
for many of whom the McCartney penchant for schmaltz is a sore point
Here’s an unofficial album by the Fab Four at full throttle that sounds like any number of trashy garage-punk demos
It is because of the ubiquity of the Beatles’ canonical music that people seek out something like this
a perspective on their work from a different angle
a version of the band that hasn’t been beaten into overfamiliarity through radio play and cultural saturation
The Hamburg bootlegs offer the promise that for just over an hour
we can hear a beloved rock institution that’s about to be the subject of a four-part biopic series as a strung-out
it’s almost disappointing how good they sound
Police launch murder inquiry after Alexandra Fröhlich is found dead on her boat on the Elbe
A murder inquiry has been launched after a bestselling German novelist was found dead on a houseboat in Hamburg having been violently attacked
whose novels have had prominence on Germany’s bestseller lists
The case was quickly passed to the murder squad amid evidence she had been attacked
Authorities have refused to give more details other than saying forensic evidence had been gathered and a coroner’s report submitted
Investigators have issued an appeal for potential witnesses who may have observed suspicious activity on or around the long cerise houseboat in which Fröhlich resided
on the Holzhafen bank of the Elbe River in the eastern Moorfleet district
Her son discovered her body on Tuesday morning
who believe she died between midnight and 5.30am
relatives found the 58-year-old woman lifeless on her houseboat and alerted the fire brigade
who were only able to confirm the woman’s death,” a police spokesperson told local media
the investigating authorities now believe that the woman died as a result of violence.”
The spokesperson said investigators were looking into possible suspects and whether the killer may have been known to Fröhlich
no further information can be provided at this time,” he said
Media reported that divers were at the scene of the crime
amid speculation that the weapon could have been thrown into the Elbe
initially in Ukraine where she founded a women’s magazine in Kyiv
She later worked as a freelance journalist in Germany for women’s and other magazines such as Stern
My Russian Mother-in-Law and other Catastrophes
which she said was based on her own experience of being married to a Russian
It entered the bestseller list of Der Spiegel magazine
one of the closest-observed indicators of fiction and nonfiction sales in Germany
It was subsequently translated into French
A critic at the time described it as “a hilarious west-east satire”
In 2016 she published the crime novel Death is a Certainty
and in 2019 she followed this with Skeletons in the Closet
Her novels were characterised by a mix of humour
After emerging resounding 4-0 winners from their fixture away to Darmstadt
HSV will have the chance to seal promotion next time out with a win over SSV Ulm
The Rothosen were in understandably positive mood following proceedings
Sebastian Schonlau: It is really impressive to have won this game so convincingly by the 4-0 score line that we have under the pressure that we were
It was clear to us that we would need to keep another clean sheet and everyone was intent on making that happen
The goals then came naturally as a result of the team’s display to cap off a perfect day at the office
Next weekend marks the scenario we have wanted to be in
it is extremely annoying to be suspended for the match but that’s of no matter to the team as we always perform as a group
Jonas Meffert: We saw an incredible team performance today
We showed immense team spirit on that pitch today and totally deserved the win
Everyone was playing for each other and with so much shared confidence
The build up for the goals was also superb
Everything just came together today even despite Darmstadt giving a good showing
The win was really crucial in light of last week’s performance and we now want to give it our all alongside our fans to get over the line next weekend
"We emphatically demonstrated our togetherness today" Davie Selke
Davie Selke: We emphatically demonstrated our togetherness today
coping really well in a tricky contest and adapting to the game as it progressed
we defended everything and had to deal with some pressure to begin with
The coaching staff and Stefan Kuntz found the right words following the poor performance against Karlsruhe
We are really pleased about how today went
and are now looking forward to the next game against Ulm after which we hope to be celebrating with the fans
Miro Muheim: It went just how we would have wanted
pushing hard and showing intensity in everything we did
We knew that we could not simply turn up and run away with things because it would be a full throttle affair in which we would need to bring the fight
We did that well and took the game into our own hands thanks to our strength at corners
The fans helped us on the way to this important win and we are now looking forward to the next home game
Ransford Königsdörffer: We wanted to win this game for ourselves
defended as a unit and played well going forward
This win was so important in keeping us on the right track to now be really excited for the next match at home
In order to have the chance to celebrate there next time out
we needed to do our job today and that we did
The emotion on show was incredible in the away block after the game
"It wasn’t about playing perfect football today
but about showing resistance" Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: Our game plan really came to fruition today
We knew that Darmstadt would put us under a lot of pressure at the start
We did well and battled our way into the game
It wasn’t about playing perfect football today
and building a solid base that allowed us to play our game
as we stood together and overcame the challenge in front of us
and we struggled to recover from there against a side that played with real cleverness
We still gave it our absolute all though and tried our hardest to get back into contention
but we ended up being picked off on the counter for their third and fourth goals
even if the 4-0 scoreline doesn’t reflect the game
No points for SV Darmstadt 98 at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor
The Lilies appeared to be at least on par with the current 2
SV 98 suffered a decisive 4-0 defeat against Hamburger SV
We've compiled all the comments from the game for you
„Congratulations to HSV and Merlin on their deserved away win – even if it wasn’t a typical 4-0 defeat
we were the better team with the better chances
The goal conceded from a set piece changed the dynamics of the game in everyone’s minds
we continued to dominate the game after that
We tried to get back into the game until the last moment
We didn’t handle the other two goals well; HSV did very well after the break today.“
Much of what we had planned and hoped for came true today
We knew that Darmstadt’s home game is characterised by the opening phase
We overcame that phase and then gradually fought our way back
We wanted to compete and win one-on-one duels
I’m very pleased that we were able to score two set-piece goals
it was extremely challenging overall to defend the style of football Flo is playing here
But my team threw themselves into it – with everything they had
I’m very proud of the team and the staff.“
it was a match on equal terms for a long time
and the opening phase even clearly belonged to us
We had a certain amount of control of the game
HSV played well; the squad speaks for itself
It still wasn’t a classic 4-0 defeat
because we weren’t that inferior in terms of performance
But I saw a team with a lot of energy that also went into every challenge
It wasn’t due to a lack of desire.“
„We didn’t capitalise on our chances in the first 20 minutes
but unfortunately I couldn’t defend Reis in the penalty area
and that was evident in the first 20 minutes and the entire first half
You have to admit that HSV played a good game
we didn’t really get our act together after the break

A bitter afternoon and defeat for the SV Darmstadt 98 U21 team
The young Lilies lost 3-2 to SC 1960 Hanau on matchday 32 of the Lotto Hessenliga
Although the blue and whites demonstrated their ability to stage comebacks twice on Sunday (May 4)
they were defeated shortly before the final whistle due to a late goal
This decisive result was displayed on the scoreboard at the Merck Stadium after the final whistle
SV 98 finally suffered a decisive defeat to Hamburger SV on Saturday afternoon (May 3)
The decisive factor in the defeat in a largely evenly matched game was two set pieces
which HSV used to score their first two goals
we look back at a match that could have taken a different direction
A courageous performance by the Lilies ended without a happy ending: SV 98 had to admit defeat to Hamburger SV 4-0 (1-0) – it was the first defeat after four home wins in a row

Against the backdrop of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and autocratic tendencies worldwide
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has called for the defense and preservation of a united Europe
Germany has a special responsibility in this regard due to its history
said the outgoing chancellor at a commemoration ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war and the liberation of the concentration camps at the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial in Hamburg
"One of the very central lessons from the war instigated by Germans
from the murder of millions of innocent women
children and men is our deep conviction that our continent
that we Europeans must leave war between our peoples behind us once and for all," said Scholz at his last major public appearance as Chancellor in front of several hundred international guests
including Holocaust survivors and relatives of victims
Scholz: Autocrats and populists want to destroy Europe
It was all the more tragic that Russian President Vladimir Putin had brought war back to Europe
"We must not and will not resign ourselves to this." With freedom
Europe was "the living and breathing alternative to the murderous horrors of war" and therefore incompatible with belligerent imperialism and contempt for international law
"And so it is no wonder that autocrats
extremists and populists around the world and also in our countries want to attack and destroy this peaceful and united Europe," said Scholz
Germany in particular must not allow this to happen
"because we must be aware of the abysses that go hand in hand with imperialism
disenfranchisement and racial hatred"

Hamburg's Our Town Foundation received $100,000 for facade improvement
- State officials made a stop in Hamburg to celebrate small businesses
"We have more than a million small businesses in Pennsylvania and those businesses support 2.4 million jobs," says PA Secretary of the Department of Community and Economic Development
He visited Hamburg Friday to highlight the governor's big investment into small businesses and tour some small businesses
"We've invested $20 million into a new budget program called 'Main Street Matters' to help downtowns and Main Street corridors like this one in Hamburg get stronger and even more dynamic," says Siger
welcoming place worth coming back to [and] it tells residents that their town is worth investing in," says Lynn Weller
The state also officially designated Hamburg a "small business community."
"What that does is it enables their downtown to access or preferential funding and technical assistance to really help this Main Street grow and thrive," says Siger
Shapiro and DCED for recognizing the importance of bringing funding back into this type of program with the Main Street Matters," says Executive Director of Our Town Foundation

the end of winter usually brings a collapse in form
and a bitter end to another attempt to win promotion back to the Bundesliga
The last seven years have been humiliating
they won the European Cup in 1983 and play in front of 57,000 fans at home
And yet six times they have tried to climb out of the 2.Bundesliga since their relegation in 2018 and six times they have failed
Twice they have finished third and been beaten in a relegation play-off
Nearly every season starts strongly in autumn and winter
before all that promise melts away in the spring sun
It’s not just that HSV play badly when it matters
Their failures are often cloaked in dark comedy
they had one foot back in the Bundesliga only for Heidenheim to score twice in an 11-minute stoppage time and slam the door in their face
they built a 1-0 lead in the first leg of their play-off with Hertha Berlin
only then to be beaten 2-0 back in Hamburg
made worse by the fact that Hertha were coached by Felix Magath
who scored HSV’s winning goal in that 1983 European Cup win
because the universe wanted to mock HSV one more time
won promotion to the Bundesliga as champions of the 2.Bundesliga
HSV beat Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-1 at the Volksparkstadion
It is one of the great destinations of German football and it produced another fabulous night
HSV had maintained their one-point lead at the top of a hopelessly tight division and
The irony is that HSV are being led up the mountain by a cast of unlikely characters — by a free-transfer centre-forward who the game had given up on and a 34-year-old head coach without any prior full-time experience
he was replaced on an interim basis by Merlin Polzin
Polzin was born in Hamburg and grew up an HSV fan
but also the man responsible for setting his career’s path
Thioune was coaching Osnabruck’s under-17 side and appointed Polzin as his assistant
when Thioune had built his own reputation to the point of being appointed head coach at HSV
he brought Polzin along as his assistant — and he has been there since
But for the pencil moustache of a 1920s aristocrat
Polzin would look a decade younger than he really is
He was never a coaching prodigy and despite serving as a brief interim after Tim Walter was dismissed in February 2024
there was no sense of HSV sitting on any sort of saviour when Baumgart departed and he reprised the role
The assumption had always been that the club needed someone strong — a name
fiercely intelligent and conciliatory character
from someone presumed antithetical to everything HSV were believed to need
Since he took control — and earned the job permanently — they have lost once in four months
during which individually and collectively
the team has looked its healthiest in years
an absurdly gifted but maddeningly mercurial French winger
whose form and fitness has been tenuous for much of the last year
looks again like a player with a Bundesliga future
And HSV are balanced with the ball and far more secure without it
It was Polzin’s first loss and a dispiriting one
but the win over Fortuna was a comprehensive response
HSV took the lead with a thunderbolt from full-back Miro Muheim
Dawid Kownacki then equalised later in the first half
before Davie Selke headed the hosts back into a lead that they would never lose
He moved to HSV on a free transfer in the summer 2024
having made more than 200 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen
but without ever scoring more than 10 goals in a league season
nor living up to the promise that made him a regular in Germany’s international youth teams
it was just to provide back-up to Robert Glatzel
who has consistently scored goals at 2.Bundesliga level and was presumed integral to any hope of promotion
So much so that when Glatzel suffered a ruptured tendon in his hip during an October friendly
Glatzel has not played since and the season did change — eventually for the better
who averaged roughly one goal every five Bundesliga games
has 14 from 17 starts in the second division
To emphasise just how unforeseen this form has been
it’s worth recalling a story from his time at Werder Bremen
Selke was on loan at the Weserstadion and scored three goals all season as Werder were relegated
According to a mean-spirited meme of the time
some of the resulting disappointment was dampened
by freeing the club from their obligation to make Selke’s move permanent for €12m
he is in the right place at the right time
In February he scored both goals — including a last-minute penalty — in a 2-1 win away at Prussen Munster
and his team’s first two goals in a 3-0 win over Kaiserslautern
A fierce competitor who adores the physical aspect of the game and must be horrible to play against
challenging and holding his team-mates to account
He broke his cheekbone in January and has been wearing a face mask since
it seems to have made him better — more menacing
When Selke scored his goal on Saturday and dropped to his knees
the stadium announcer howled his name out across the tannoy and the stadium boomed it back with shuddering volume
18-year-old academy prospect Otto Stange scored to make it 4-1
but raced down the touchline to celebrate with his young team-mate
wrapping him in a bear hug and kissing his cheek
A post shared by Seb Stafford-Bloor (@sebstaffordbloor)
He has seen the good and the bad in the game
He knows what it is to bask in its adulation
Someone of that experience is valuable to HSV
because not every player is equipped to cope with the challenge of the club’s situation
The down years have created a lot of bad memories and many of this squad have lived through the disappointments of recent seasons
The result is a neurosis that is never far from the surface and a fragility that teams in the 2.Bundesliga enjoy trying to expose
But Selke has become part of the resistance to that
This is probably his last chance with a major club and the urgency with which he has embraced that challenge suggests he understands that
But his tangible spirit has become something important; it has perpetuated a healthy rage which has replaced the usual weakness
it will be impossible to separate him from that achievement — and six months ago
that would have been a ridiculous situation to imagine
The nine remaining games might as well be 100
Repeated failure has bred paranoia in Hamburg and the fear that just talking about promotion will somehow scare it away

Hamburg
millionaire’s metropolis and anarchist hub – and occasionally all at once
Germany’s second-largest city offers an intoxicating mix of blustery North Sea winds
rich Hanseatic history and radical politics
Hamburg’s got more bridges than Venice and basks in a crisp northern light
It’s a city defined by its proximity to water
from its Sunday morning Fischmarkt and the picturesque Strandperle beach through to the Schanzenviertel
the traditional – if now much gentrified – heart of Hamburg counter-culture
It’s a city of contrasts: of the red light thrill of the Reeperbahn and world-class cultural institutions like the Elbphilharmonie and the Hamburger Kunsthalle
here are the best attractions in Hamburg right now.
📍 Discover our ultimate guide to what to do in Hamburg

Photograph: ShutterstockDepending on how late last night was
an early morning visit to the Sunday Fischmarkt is a legendary Hamburg experience
with raucous criers promising all the bargains and bawdy banter you could wish for
there’s fish in abundance – smoked
pickled – alongside plenty of flowers
the neighbouring Fischauktionshalle promises to keep the party flowing with beer and live rock bands
For those looking for a more restorative breakfast
Photograph: ShutterstockHamburg is a harbour city
and has all the nightlife provisions to prove it
The Reeperbahn is its most renowned party–and prostitution–thoroughfare
bachelorette parties and posh law students looking to let their hair down roam along the fluorescent strip of fast food chains
sex shops and sweat-steamed clubs where everyone’s woozily dancing to Stevie Wonder
ready and garish glory – and a must-see for a complete impression of the city. True kneipe classics in the area include Alt Hamburger and Zum Silbersack
while the Beatles famously played in various clubs along the Große Freiheit
🤫 Insider tip: You’d do well to keep an eye on your valuables
but the vibe is far more upfront than uneasy seedy
with more people leering towards you for a drunken sing-along than anything malicious.
Photograph: Get Your GuideReady to get stuck into Hamburg’s history
This spooky dungeon delves into some of Hamburg’s darkest events from history
Actors here will take you on a frightening journey spanning over 600 years
🤫 Insider tip: It’s worth checking if there’s a seasonal special show on when you visit – the last showing
the ‘Charlatan Doctor,’ delved into a fake healing ‘doctor’ from the 17th century.
Photograph: ShutterstockThe remarkable red-brick Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world
it spans some 26 hectares in a grid of canals
bridges and multi-story buildings providing both land and water access
spices and textiles all passed along these channels
and though today the Speicherstadt is less bustling hub of global trade than UNESCO World Heritage Site
it’s still infinitely evocative of Hamburg’s trading repute—and of a time when far-flung fabrics and flavors were still a thing of luxurious thrill
The area’s architecture does a whole lot more than portside pragmatism
all particularly atmospheric when illuminated at night
🤫 Insider tip: For a boat trip without the tourist commentary (and often cheaper), Hamburg’s regular public ferry 62 is a good option. A round trip will start and end at Landungsbrücken, and takes in stops including Altona, the Fischmarkt, Fischereihafen and more.
Photograph: ShutterstockThe handsome sandstone marvel that is Hamburg’s Town Hall has been the centrepiece of Altstadt since 1897. Dominating its surroundings thanks to its towering spire and vast platz, the Rathaus is a functioning government building and houses the city’s government. It also contains heaps of history in its exhibitions – members of the public can visit daily, either through guided tours or on their own.
Photograph: ShutterstockThe Kunsthalle is one of the most important museums in Germany
with astonishing holdings through 700 years of European art history
There are star turns from the Elders Cranach and Holbein
and a lustrous line-up of Dutch Golden Age artists such as Rembrandt
The 19th-century French and German collection is also particularly strong
and Caspar David Friedrich in all his Wanderer above the Sea of Fog glory
The Kunsthalle’s contemporary gallery features leading examples of Pop art
such as Jenny Holzer’s LED Ceiling Snake
a ticker-tape of characteristic truisms between the Kunsthalle’s old building and new wing
the Kunsthalle’s exhibition program is excellent
with thematic as well as period- and artist-specific shows
and a strong run in exhibitions of women artists to offset all those Old Masters
Photograph: Hannes Jähnert/FlickrThe traditional beating heart of Hamburg counter-culture and center of the much-publicized violent protests during the G20 summit
the neighbourhood of Schanzenviertel holds on hard to its alternative credentials
the neighbourhood is more characterised by third-wave coffee shops and vintage lamp stores than hubs of anarchic dissent
a former neighbourhood theatre (now long-contested squat and cultural space)
remains a real center of activism and protest
Schanzenviertel remains a lively and charismatic district
several good and reasonably priced eateries
as well as the Saturday Flohschanze flea market

Connecting the city’s central shopping district and the close-by harbour is the newly-finished Hafencity. A humongous urban development (the biggest in Europe, actually), Hamburg has poured billions into making what was a forgotten area, the place to be. Most Hamburgers think of the futuristic Elbphilharmonie when picturing Hafencity
a sprawling concert hall and major cultural landmark with a programme that includes anything from Pink Floyd tributes to classical music
Other must-dos include a walk by the harbour and boat tour
as well as a visit to the Portuguese district which is packed with authentic restaurants
staying at Hafencity means you’re also close to town
with the Rathaus only 20 minutes walk away.
Stay here: This neighbourhood is perfect for tourists, with a range of great hotels like 25hours Hotel boasting nautical-themed cabins, a cool cocktail bar and Eastern Mediterranean restaurant, NENI.

St Georg spans from seedy sex-shops around the train station to luxury hotels and penthouse apartments overlooking the lake
Hamburg Pride parade kicks off here each year and the neighborhood remains the most vibrant LGBTQ quarter in town
centered around the hundreds of buzzing bars and cafés along the Lange Reihe
St Georg is also a thriving multi-ethnic community with a number of Turkish
Irani and Afghan eateries and minimarkets along the Steindamm and around Hansaplatz square
you should try Cox for upper-end French cuisine and candlelight or

Once the beating heart of Hamburg’s counter-culture
the Sternschanze has softened its edge over the last decade
Previously the stomping ground of punks and artists
you’ll now find aesthetic coffee shops
low-lit cocktail bars and vegan ramen spots
in between cultural centres and graffiti-ridden squats which remain as a surviving token of its activism
While there’s a big whiff of hipster-ism here
the Schanze still feels authentically off-beat and relaxed
Bars and restaurants spill out onto the streets creating a nice buzz
and many don’t worry much about interiors – it’s about what’s on the menu
Bistro Carmagnole is one of those neighbourhood haunts that locals love
with the dimly-lit Walrus bar perfectly placed for a cocktail afterwards
head to the Flohschanze flea market for vintage clothes and bargain bric-a-brac
being sure to get a black-and-white photo in the analog photoautomat
Stay here: Superbude is a spot-on stay with a laid-back vibe and budget-friendly options.

but in Hamburg this isn’t a byword for a quaint corner of the city
it’s where most of the action happens
At its heart is the beautiful Town Hall that’ll catch your eye with its Neo-Renaissance architecture and in winter is the setting of a magical Christmas market
inspired by the swooping archways of Venice
shop for rare books in the century-old Felix Judd – a favourite of Hamburgian Karl Lagerfeld – and check out the Alsterhaus

the best bars and clubs are sure to follow
The lurid Reeperbahn (aka ‘The Kiez’) sits in the middle
and surrounding it are a swathe of fast food joints
especially as many tourists head here for a gawp

This lush riverside suburb is one of the most affluent districts in Hamburg
Situated on a hill to the west of the city centre
its winding streets boast handsome villas and cute cottages
A 20-minute S-Bahn ride from the city centre
Blankenese is more removed from Hamburg’s main attractions
so don’t base yourself here if planning a city break
Attractions that can be enjoyed - for the day or the weekend - include a walk down the Elbstrand beach
unique thanks to its industrial backdrop of commercial ships
where city dwellers love to sunbathe when good weather strikes
There’s also plenty of beach bars to grab an authentic Fischbrötchen and Aperol Spritz.
Stay here: For those wanting a little peace and quiet, design-focused hotel brand Stilwerk recently opened their Strandhotel Blankenese, with a cute pastel palette and views out to the Elbe River.
A vital waterway for short sea and feeder shipping in the Baltic region
the Kiel Canal was due to close Monday evening
and will remain closed through the day shift on Thursday
Ships have been ordered to clear the canal with no new shipping being permitted to enter the canal for most of the day on Monday to provide time for ships to clear the waterway
The gates at both ends of the canal were due to be closed by 2200 Monday evening
“Nothing will be moving,” warned a spokesperson for Ver.di
“No ships will be able to go in or out.” In addition
“Ver.di has called on the employees of the Waterways and Shipping Office to go on a warning strike so that the federal government can also feel the effects.”
The so-called warning strike is a short-term
limited action by the union under German law
It is done to call attention to their cause which in this case is contract negotiations for public service employees
the union lamented that offers had not been put forth ahead of the negotiations
The next round of contract talks is scheduled for March 14-16
The union says wants the terms of the new contract to help to increase the attractiveness of jobs in the public sector
combat staff shortages and reduce the burden on employees
Ver.di is demanding a pay increase of eight percent in total
They are also demanding higher bonuses for stressful shift work
and a new type of "my time account" to give employees more time independence.
The new round of strikes began over the weekend with reports that all 13 of the country’s major airports would be going on strike
The Hamburg Airport is reported to have already closed as of Sunday during an unannounced strike
The scope of the strike is set to increase daily
The Kiel Canal calls itself “the world’s most frequented artificial waterway.” It provides a direct route between the North Sea and the Baltic
reducing the trip by 260 nautical miles which equates to saving 14 to 18 hours of transit time
The canal is approximately 50 nautical miles and takes six to eight hours to transit
Ships will either have to wait for it to reopen or make the trip around Denmark in the congested sea lanes
major delays should be expected for all west- and eastbound traffic heading towards the Kiel Canal
The period of congestion cannot be predicted
as it will depend on the volume of ships waiting to transit,” ship agency and logistics company GAC Group warned customers in an alert
The local branch of Ver.di is calling on employees at the Port of Hamburg to join this week’s action
The port is already warning of anticipated delays noting that one in three containers handled in Hamburg passes through the canal
Wondering what that big barn is behind Bob's Hamburg in Akron
It's a new commercial kitchen called Stray Kitchens, created by Charly Murphy and Alicia Kennedy to increase production of pickled products, mustard, hot sauces, barbecue sauces and dry rubs for their Akron Pickle and Stray Dog Akron brands
who produced their foods for several years at Bounce Innovation Hub
had recently been creating everything from mustards to pickles at their two Stray Dog cafes downtown
all of their production will occur at their new commercial kitchen on East Avenue
The rest of the barn was full of old items left behind by previous Bob's owners
Murphy said he believes the 700-square-foot barn was formerly a garage or mechanic shop
spacious production kitchen means Murphy can produce more pickle and mustard products for area restaurants and also create private-label products for clients
His mustard making started with his Stray Dog cart in 2009
when folks used to ask if they could buy what was left in his mustard squeeze bottle at the end of the day
"We started bottling it a few bottles at a time and right now we're producing about 500 bottles a year," Murphy said
He sells the mustard on his Stray Dog food truck and cafes
And before Murphy even bought Bob's Hamburg
Stray Dog also supplies its mustards to Akron eateries Diamond Deli and Frank's Place and its pickles to Eddie's Famous Cheesesteaks
The business entrepreneur does retail sales, too, at various markets, the Peanut Shoppe downtown and at Northside Marketplace
Working from his own FDA-certified production kitchen will allow Murphy to meet more retail demand for his products
He and Kennedy have been working on the kitchen since January
refinishing the concrete floor and bringing in kitchen equipment
freezer and a machine that seals the tops of product pouches
Murphy also has ordered an automated sachet maker to put his mustard in little packets
New products he's working on are ketchup and a veggie dog
with ground carrots as the main ingredient
Big Blue Barbecue and Buzzy Bee Thai rolled ice cream
He even raises bees in North Hill for honey for his ice cream truck
He's building two more food trucks this summer: a pizza and baked potato truck and a concession truck with popcorn
Completing Murphy's mobile food fleet are a pig roast trailer and a smoker trailer
Kennedy said Murphy's positive thinking and can-do attitude are key to his successful ideas
New ideas pop into Murphy's head daily and he texts that brainstorming to Kennedy
"I learned a long time ago that it does not pay off to say no to any of his ideas

a fourth-year Criminal Justice major with minors in Leadership and Human Capital
was thrilled when she received a co-op offer from the United States Attorney’s Office in New York for the spring of 2023 cycle
Wanting to attend law school after graduating Northeastern in hopes of becoming a criminal defense attorney
she eagerly accepted the offer and started planning her move to New York
Samantha realized she would be spending more money over the next six months than she had initially expected
Samantha is what she calls “technically a first generation college student”; her father and sister didn’t complete college
and her mother chose to end her education after getting her associate’s degree
Northeastern holds a special place for the entire Hamburg family
They were impressed by the university’s co-op program immediately upon learning about it when they were touring the school
and have since been all the more impressed seeing the breadth of experiences Samantha has had during her time here
Samantha’s father continues to visit every Parent’s Weekend
even as his daughter goes into her fourth and final year and is no longer living on campus
“I don’t think any parent does this after freshman year,” Samantha jokes.
Samantha’s family runs the Hamburg Foundation
which hosts annual events to raise money for charities and organizations that have become important to them over the years
As Samantha was taking the Co-op Work Experience course and later
she learned that several of the positions available to students who were interested in exploring criminal justice were unpaid
she learned that many of them were offered the positions they dreamed about but
because these positions were unable to pay them
Thinking about the challenges of students working full-time without making any money
who also had to move to and pay rent in New York
she brought the dilemma to her family to see if there was something they could do to help these students financially.
There was. Samantha’s family donated a significant amount of money to Northeastern’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice
all of which is going toward providing financial assistance to Criminology and Criminal Justice students who are taking unpaid co-ops
Students who accept such a co-op may apply for help and
are granted a sum of money to use for housing
and other costs they may encounter throughout the co-op
“Our family firmly believes that no one’s desire to learn and contribute to their community should be limited by a lack of resources or financial means
We hope that our gift serves as a small step in empowering others to reach their full potential and make a meaningful impact.”

Toralf Haag and Hamburger Energiewerke GmBH (HEnW) Managing Director Michael Prinz joined First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg Dr
Peter Tschentscher in inaugurating the HEnW thermal storage system
symbolically kicking off the supply of carbon-neutral industrial heat
The two companies have worked together to lay the groundwork for providing up to 20,000 Hamburg households with carbon-neutral heat and avoiding up to 100,000 t of CO2 emissions in the future
This represents the on-schedule fulfillment of the contract the companies signed in December 2021
Both its size and complexity make the project unique in Germany
multimetal producer Aurubis again significantly invested in a method for extracting the surplus heat generated during a copper production sub-process at its Hamburg plant
This heat is fed as hot water into the pressure heat accumulator in Hamburg Veddel recently completed by Hamburger Energiewerke
The accumulator already holds up to four million liters of hot water from Aurubis heat today
and the heat is released into Hamburger Energiewerke’s over 860-kilometer-long city network when needed
The project received funding from the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Hamburg Investment and Development Bank (IFB)
the industrial waste heat supplied by Aurubis is a building block in the Tiefstack energy park
Hamburger Energiewerke’s plan to phase out coal in Hamburg by 2030
Aurubis and Hamburger Energiewerke are actively shaping the heat transition with the current project and making an important contribution to meeting Hamburg’s climate targets
The heat supply is scheduled to come online in the 2024/25 heating period
First Mayor of Hamburg Peter Tschentscher: “Using innovative technology is the best way to protect the climate
This includes leveraging industrial surplus heat to keep homes warm
Aurubis will feed the process heat generated during copper production into the Hamburger Energiewerke district heating system
Reusing this waste heat from the copper smelter drives decarbonization in the buildings sector by preventing up to 100,000 t of CO2 emissions every year
Projects like this allow us to take giant strides forward on our path to a carbon-neutral Hamburg
We are linking industry and climate protection
strengthening our competitiveness as an industry hub and realizing our climate plan
which includes ambitious CO2 targets for the city of Hamburg.”
Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action: “There is huge potential in waste heat reuse
and the federal government’s goal is to make it easier to realize projects like this in the future by further improving the political parameters
An enormous amount of surplus heat from artificial intelligence data centers and electrolyzers for producing hydrogen will enter the market in the coming years
This surplus heat should be harnessed to generate inexpensive district heating instead of being discharged into the atmosphere
The Hamburg project is an excellent example
and the government is completely behind it.”
Energy and Agriculture: “Everyone linked to the Hamburg city grid will benefit from the HEnW heat accumulator: Aurubis
We are closing a loop and enabling the direct use of energy in Hamburg households that has otherwise gone to waste
I am particularly pleased that all the surplus heat at Aurubis is now part of the heat supply
The first two segments have been in operation for several years
and we had the foresight to create the infrastructure for the additional feed-in from the third segment back then
This national flagship project is setting standards and is another success story for the heat transition in Hamburg
Aurubis is laying the foundation for the energy transition
The Industrial Heat project clearly shows that sustainable business activities and actions go hand in hand here
we are an important part of the solution for the challenges of our time
we have developed an innovative solution for an environmentally friendly heat supply
If we want to see more forward-looking projects like this
we need more regulatory recognition of green industrial heat
which should be fully recognized in emissions trading
and an efficient market for green proofs of origin.”
Hamburger Energiewerke GmbH Managing Director Michael Prinz: “Waste heat from Aurubis gets us another step closer to phasing out coal in Hamburg
It encompasses the huge surplus heat potential at the Hamburg site that we will be extracting for our new energy park and the climate-neutral district heating system of the future
we are setting a new benchmark for the heat transition in Germany with the feed-in of industrial heat on this scale.”
The heat is generated in Aurubis’ contact acid plant in Hamburg where sulfuric acid
This process is an exothermic chemical reaction that generates CO2-free heat at a temperature suitable for carbon-neutral district heating
The technology has been successfully used at the Aurubis plant since 2018 to supply heat to enercity to cover HafenCity East and Rothenburgsort
The Industrial Heat project highlights the multimetal company’s ambitious decarbonization targets and underscores Aurubis’ efforts to pioneer solutions for ecological and sustainable business activity
Heat production at Aurubis and the heating needs of district heat customers often occur at different times
So the extracted industrial heat is temporarily stored as 105 degree Celsius water in the nearby Hamburger Energiewerke pressure heat accumulator
The heat can then be fed into the over 860-kilometer city network using a network pump system
To deliver the industrial heat to Hamburg households
Hamburger Energiewerke is using an existing enercity Contracting Nord GmbH pipeline to cover the first segment from the Aurubis plant to the Elbe River crossing
a 2.8-kilometer HEnW district heating pipeline continues to the heat conversion plant at Spaldingstrasse
The heat conversion plant serves as an interface for integrating various heat sources into the district heating network
The final steps for integrating the industrial heat supply into the city network will be carried out before the actual launch
In addition to industrial heat and waste heat from the Borsigstrasse waste recycling plant (MVB)
river water heat pumps and another heat storage tank are used to reliably generate climate-friendly heat for the city.
A number of Aurubis and Hamburger Energiewerke projects make up the Industrial Heat or District Heating project
three independent projects extract heat from three different production units in the contact acid plant
Aurubis applied for funding from BAFA as part of the “Federal Funding for Energy and Resource Efficiency” scheme
Module 4: Energy and resource-related optimization of systems and processes
Hamburger Energiewerke received funding from BAFA as part of the Model Project Heat Network Systems 4.0 (Module II) program
The Hamburg Investment and Development Bank (IFB Hamburg) also provided funding for the HEnW project in keeping with the “Companies for Resource Conservation” funding guidelines

U19s and U17s looking forward to Bayern and Hamburg | OneFootballBorussia Dortmund
BVB's 3-0 victory away to highly fancied VfL Bochum was one of many surprises in the last-16 games in the U19 German Championship
As was the elimination of big names like VfB Stuttgart
Rasenballsport Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach
"The fact that we reached the quarter-finals with our young team and despite the many injuries is a huge compliment to the talent of our players
It's also a great success for the entire coaching team," said U19 coach Mike Tullberg
The anticipation is tangible ahead of the clash with Bayern Munich
We see ourselves in the role of the underdog
the odds are 50:50 in these knockout matches
five of which went into extra time in the first round,' explained Tullberg
who expects a “completely different game” to the one in Bochum and an “extremely strong opponent in footballing terms."
who were unlucky to lose on penalties to Inter Milan in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League
qualified for the final round in second place in Group C behind FC Schalke 04
They defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 in the round of 16
Bayern are the clear number one in Germany," said Tullberg
The 17-year-old Swede Jonah Kusi-Asa recently made his Bundesliga debut for the first team against FSV Mainz 05
and the highly talented players Lennart Karl
who was suspended on Sunday due to a yellow card
have also already played for coach Vincent Kompany's first team
U17s look forward to hosting HSV at the Rote Erde
The statistics alone show how difficult the U17s' task against Hamburger SV will be. Hannover 96, unbeaten winners of Group B in the preliminary round ahead of BVB
failed to qualify for the final round in fifth place in the main round Group B behind Rasenballsport Leipzig (19 points)
That's testament to the quality of the teams
This even balance at a high level speaks in favour of the new DFB youth leagues format," said Karsten Gorges ahead of the last-16 clash
After a disappointing weekend last weekend with defeats in the last group game in Magdeburg (2-0) and in the Westfalenpokal quarter-final at SV Rödinghausen (2-1)
he expects a positive reaction from his boys: "It's a nice form of pressure
We're having a strong season and playing really good football
Our biggest problem in the last two games has been our failure to take our chances," emphasised Karsten Gorges and assured: "We're looking forward to the experience of playing in the Rote Erde stadium and are eagerly awaiting the game."
who is undergoing rehab following knee surgery
"Our goal is to qualify for the quarter-finals," said Gorges

Police in Hamburg have launched a murder inquiry after bestselling German novelist Alexandra Fröhlich was found dead on a houseboat following a violent attack
was found dead last Tuesday morning by her son
The police said she was likely killed between midnight and 5.30am
Authorities said on Sunday the case had been assigned to the murder squad
forensic evidence had been collected from the cerise houseboat docked on the Elbe river Holzhafen bank in the eastern Moorfleet district
and the coroner had submitted their report
Swabs had been taken from at least one family member for possible gunpowder residue
Divers from the police as well as a 3D scanner had also been deployed
amid speculation that the murder weapon might have been disposed of in the river
who were only able to confirm the woman’s death,” The Guardian quoted a police spokesperson as saying
the investigating authorities now believe that the woman died as a result of violence
no further information can be provided at this time.”
German media reported the police had requested the public to report any information they might have about the incident
particularly any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the novelist’s death
Fröhlich started out as a journalist in Ukraine, where she founded a women’s magazine. She later worked as a freelance journalist in Germany before publishing her first novel, My Russian Mother-in-Law and Other Catastrophes, in 2012.
The novel, based on her own experiences, became very popular, selling over 50,000 copies and landing on the Spiegel bestseller list. It was translated to and published in French in 2015.
Fröhlich also published Traveling with Russians in 2014, a sequel to My Russian Mother-in-Law and Other Catastrophes.
She followed with detective novel Death is a Certainty in 2016 and Skeletons in the Closet in 2019, both of which found great success.
