go and threw caution to the wind to deliver the fastest time with four faults on her lovely mare Iron Dames Combella Switzerland’s Barbara Schnieper went second on the 12-year-old Canice and opted to go for a steady clear but when the pair ‘misjudged’ an oxer halfway around put paid to that it was clear that she had not done enough to claim victory this time 27-year-old Hinners was thrilled by her Initially seeking safety, Muhammad quickly realised his car could be used as a getaway vehicle. He rushed back to retrieve his keys, preventing further harm. His quick thinking and selfless actions earned him praise from officials and the public Despite being hailed as a hero, Muhammad humbly dismissed the title. “I am not a hero. I am a Muslim. Just more of what works: beers brewed to German standards, served with purpose, and backed by a team that’s clear about who they are and where they’re going. Because growth doesn’t mean going bigger. It is also distinctive for two other reasons: it spans a whole month and it boasts one gig every night around the tri-city span of Heidelberg Sometimes there are two gigs in an evening and very occasionally there are three events happening simultaneously so we’re talking intense delicacy and concentration rather than Winter Jazzfest overload Pleasure is carefully rationed rather than taken on the run Erwin Ditzner is a local drummer and percussionist witnessed once before at Enjoy Jazz by your scribe It’s a tradition of the festival that Ditzner is given carte blanche to create the circumstances of his set he teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp which is literally a converted fire station so it was particularly encouraging that the audience attendance was somewhat strong under the circumstances Sharp had brought only his axe across the water leaving his range of reed instruments at home laying out leaves of environmental shadings He also used a small rod to add electric guitar string glissando sensitively ranging around his skins across Sharp’s echo-soaked dronescape The next development involved the guitarist picking out silver traceries in tandem with his wah-wah-talking pedal growing rather than jerking off into unexpected directions Ditzner maintained the rollin’ and tumblin’ at an increasing pace this was in keeping with an upped volume and intensity dramatic hesitations creating greater tension Ditzner’s beats inviting Sharp to pull out his bottleneck Sharp also operated his abstract bass finger laying out low lines as a bed for treble scrabble leading to a pair of encores demanded by the unusually vocal free-improvisation firehouse crowd it was in the gleaming and glitzy sold-out Feierabendhaus one of Ludwigshafen’s several venues created by the city’s dominant BASF chemical giant (we will remember them for their cassette tapes) Metheny was on his intensive European tour which seemingly transformed gradually from a celebration of solo album Dream Box to also embrace the even more recent solo album MoonDial (both Metheny Group/BMG) There was a special concentration on the pleasures of the baritone guitar and an extensive trawl through other phases of Metheny’s output making this a retrospective that finds this review in need of a firm spoiler warning For those who balk at Metheny’s often quease-making SynthAxe bloat-outs it was way more fulfilling to find him in this largely acoustic shape but Metheny loaded it with continual interest not least by engaging in lengthy anecdotal spinnings At first there were a mere three guitars in sight There wasn’t much embellishment of the tunes which navigated a central spine with a deliberate touch and an embedded lyrical mellowness showcasing selections from Metheny’s 1997 duo with bassman Charlie Haden (Beyond The Missouri Sky He also provided one of the most shocking outbreaks of any set this year recalling his live LP with the British guitarist Derek Bailey (The Sign of 4 The dude two seats next to your scribe refused to applaud Then Metheny’s twelve-string launched into heavy post-Sonic Youth riffing in an overwhelmingly shocking and powerful statement forty-two stringed Pikasso guitar was hidden backstage he played “Alfie” (Burt Bacharach/Hal David) and “The Girl From Ipanema” (Antônio Carlos Jobim) The MoonDial numbers were recorded on nylon-stringed baritone guitar this resonance providing a sumptuous tonal attractiveness As the set neared its climax (and its encores) as the heavy curtains swooped aside to reveal Metheny’s massive Orchestrion construction (we had wondered why he needed the massive tour bus that sat outside the venue) his crankily mechanical big band that appears both futuristic and steampunked Then he had electric axes attached to metal stands The entire performance was an expertly constructed guide to Metheny’s repertoire and radically more exciting than we might have expected The Brad Mehldau Trio provided contrast at the Pfalzbau concert hall This is a space that’s been rarely used by the Enjoy Jazz festival a lavish venue that strangely relies on unfixed seating in the name of performance versatility Mehldau concentrated on his original material as he’s just as likely to devote sets to his favored rock There also seemed to be little ignition between the trio members drummer Jorge Rossy (returned to the fold) and new bassist Felix Moseholm Each tune’s conclusion was prey to a sharp dwindling rather than a finishing flourish Rossy played micro-solos between Mehldau’s Steinway phrases as the leader repeated and scattered into free-flowing terrain although always tethered to a consistent line of thought Mehldau’s sensitive lucidity remained in place a tender touch for silvery brook continuance The last time your scribe witnessed the Mehldau trio was at the Belgrade Jazz Festival in 2021—a far superior showing Some key mysterious quality was absent during this Ludwigshafen set Martin Longley is frequently immersed in a stinking mire of dense guitar treacle, trembling across the bedsit floorboards, rifling through a curvatured stack of gleaming laptoppery, picking up a mold-speckled avant jazz platter on the way, all the while attempting to translate these worrying eardrum vibrations into semi-coherent sentences. Right now he's penning for Downbeat, Jazzwise, Songlines, We Jazz, Qwest TV and All About Jazz. creative features and resources that are the essence of our vision — creating a space for hope and healing,” said Kay Roper executive director of the Cancer Survivors Park Alliance As the functions of parks grow more complex public-private partnerships have increased as a funding source Greenville’s Unity Park is an example of many of the current trends in building urban parks — a greater reliance on public-private partnerships the conversion of postindustrial sites into green space and construction of facilities that accommodate fluctuation in water levels to help water quality and flooding issues “Parks are no longer simply places for recreation That’s why public-private partnerships are so important,” said Catherine Nagel “Really where public-private partnerships shine is that they bring in more resources and skills.” While Greenville has been known for public-private partnerships for downtown development projects such as the Hyatt Mayor Knox White said Unity Park is the city’s first example of a true public-private partnership on a park The city has earmarked $20 million in hospitality tax revenue for the new park over 10 years and wants private partners to contribute another $20 million Separate from the city’s fundraising efforts is one led by Community Journals’ chairman and co-founder Doug Greenlaw to raise money for a veterans memorial in the park Greenlaw is a founder of the Upstate charter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart “Public-private partnerships have become a critical funding tool in the toolbox,” said Kevin O’Hara vice president of urban and government affairs for the National Recreation and Parks Association public-private partnerships are good for parks.” Chicago’s Millennium Park was a result of a public-private partnership Mayor Richard Daley originally proposed construction of a parking garage with a landscaped greenroof on land that had been parkland The original plan financing called for $120 million from parking revenue bonds and $30 million from private resources plans for the park had changed drastically A cycle center provides heated bicycle parking There are outdoor art galleries and a promenade and the Pritzker Pavilion that hosts the Grant Park Musical Festival Underneath the park is a 4,000 space parking garage the park was the Midwest’s most popular tourist attraction There’s a wide range of how park public-private partnerships are structured “There’s a real range of public-private partnership models to consider,” she said “The key is to fit the model to your community Some cities have a strong base of philanthropic organizations City Park would also mirror the trend in other cities where postindustrial sites are turned into parks and green space those sites are on waterfronts and riverfronts areas that some cities turned their backs on and became nasty places to which people didn’t want to go a waterfront cargo yard was turned into one of New York’s signature parks The city redirects real estate taxes from residential and commercial developments in the project zone creating a self-sustaining revenue stream that is far less dependent on concessions and permits for special events than signature parks in other major cities “Parks are helping to revitalize cities and put them on the map,” Nagel said “It’s exciting that those projects are not just happening in the largest cities but in medium and small cities as well.” On Dec. 20, a car-ramming attack occurred at a Christmas market in Magdeburg that left five people dead and around 200 injured Al-Abdulmohsen was pedalling towards a different future—one of climate neutrality Mannheim is helping citizens unlock the doors to their sustainable future This is the story of how a city famous for putting the world on wheels is now leading the charge towards a citizen empowered climate transition Mannheim played an important role in Germany’s industrialisation and is home to the second-largest coal-fired power plant in the country Today, Mannheim is the cultural and economic centre of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, and Germany’s seventh-largest metropolitan area with nearly 2.4 million inhabitants. It has remained an important centre of progression, home to world-class academic institutions like the University of Mannheim It’s innovative ecosystem and good infrastructure have made it an international business hub Spokesperson for the EU Green Deal at the City of Mannheim the main challenges the city faces when it comes to reaching climate neutrality are greening the heating and electrical systems “One of our main challenges is mobility: Mannheim is where the car was invented we have a legacy of innovation in mobility and we have a good public transport system that has made Mannheim a 15-minute city so it’s really hard to have few cars in the city centre,” says Schönfelder Joining the EU Mission and designing their Climate City Contract – essentially the city’s roadmap for reaching climate neutrality – prompted Schönfelder and colleagues in the city administration to reflect on what is required to reach the ambitious target Schönfelder has long realised the importance of involving citizens:   I’ve thought that we need to address citizen behaviour change and how to bring their voice into our work towards systems transformation the idea to focus on citizen behaviour in consumer-related emissions was born and we address this in the Pilot Cities Programme with the idea of helping them make their city liveable Together, they form the ‘CoLAB – Committed to Local Climate Action Building’ Pilot Activity in which radical collaboration is taking shape within and between cities as partners bring residents into their cities’ climate plans The project joins together a portfolio of strategic plans and experiments that will enable the cities and their partners to test approaches to reducing emissions from consumer behaviour – emissions that the city cannot directly impact the project aims to test how citizens participate in processes and develop solutions to improve individual and collective well-being and to involve citizens as peers in co-creating a more sustainable future At the centre of the CoLAB project is a platform that connects all actors from the city administration to companies and citizens and inspires and mobilizes them to act sustainably: the ‘House of Change’ “The idea of the House of Change is to recognise the fact that there is so much going on in every city There are so many players involved in sustainability And citizens don’t always know what they can do That’s why we decided to create an online space where all this is connected: Information people can find help and answers to their questions More than 80% of our citizens say that they want to live more sustainably easy-to-implement measures,” says Schönfelder There are seven doors in the virtual House of Change Each door represents access to a more sustainable lifestyle If you find out who has the key and how to open the door you can find the solution for sustainable decisions Two or more doors can be unlocked at the same time This example of playful implementation of climate protection measures promotes understanding of system change and rewards environmentally friendly practices the city: all players are co-creators in the House of Change and the House of Change is a game for multiple players but it must be transferred to the real world to effect change As a citizen ‘visiting‘ the House of Change you will get an overview of what is happening in the city under the umbrella of sustainability You may learn about a specific challenge where incentives (such as free public transport) are exchanged for sustainable choices (such as taking the bus instead of driving) You may also learn about an event where a sustainable model apartment is shown helping consumers make informed choices regarding their own households Aachen is setting up a 2030 Climate Agency and a physical entry point to the House of Change and Muenster is designing a digital tool in the form of an app that supports people in making climate-friendly decisions “We really dived deep into the research around behaviour change and decision making to design the Pilot People make decisions every second of their lives to whether they decide to use their car or take the bus understand how and when people are making the decisions that can impact emissions and how the city can simplify the way for the decisions that result in lower emissions,” explains Schönfelder “Before implementing technical changes in our city or asking people to make climate-conscious lifestyle choices governing authorities need to get to know their citizens.”   citizen engagement means more than asking citizens to change – it means putting people at the centre of policy and understanding the values and norms that make up their behaviour The CoLAB project has taken much of its shape from academic and scientific inquiry into these subjects It has also been specifically designed to include feedback loops so cities and their partners can learn from the project we draw up an overview of the target groups one target group may be parents who take their children to school go shopping and engage in leisure activities Who other than the municipality can provide the tools for a change in mobility it is the public transport companies that can offer a good By asking them systematically and measuring and tracking the results And that’s what we do with every experiment This helps us to create better regulations and incentives that can facilitate a change in behaviour,” describes Schönfelder Mannheim understands that each interaction and campaign is an essential opportunity for yielding insights into who the citizens of Mannheim are This picture is becoming increasingly nuanced and has enabled the city to question and build awareness of what the city’s role is in the climate transition an essential part of that role is that of facilitator “The feeling we have at the moment is really electric So many people are interested in what we are doing and it’s so rewarding to show Mannheim as a modern city administration capable of taking positive steps with our citizens And the most important thing the city can do is simplify the way,” says Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, did not confirm that his conservatives and the Social Democrats were considering setting up special funds worth nearly a trillion euros to finance urgent defence and infrastructure spending, Reuters reported. But he said spending decisions had to be taken “with great urgency” after US president Donald Trump and his deputy harangued Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Friday, crystalising European fears about what some leaders view as Washington’s biggest policy reversal since the second world war. “We must now show that we are in a position to act independently in Europe,” he said, adding that he hoped the parties could reach an agreement before Thursday’s European defence summit. News of the proposed funds prompted double-digit percentage rises in shares in defence contractors – including Thyssenkrupp, Hensoldt, Renk, Rheinmetall, BAE Systems and Leonardo – on Monday morning. Sources told Reuters on Sunday that the parties were considering special funds for defence and infrastructure, and that economists had proposed to them that these be worth 400 billion euros ($417bn) and 500 billion euros in size respectively. These sums combined would amount to 20% of German GDP. 3 Mar 202518.18 CETPolice gave the all clear at Vienna’s main train station on Monday after evacuating it over an unspecified threat, a Reuters witness said shortly before national rail company OBB said trains were running again. “Good news!
