A giant jellyfish was spotted on the beach in Salobreña on Granada's Costa Tropical on Tuesday 3 September
who are studying the possible causes of its arrival
is that it has appeared in a year in which
few jellyfish have been seen along the Granada coast
The impressive specimen could be a Rhizostoma pulmo
although this name is used for several similar species
technical manager of the Aula del Mar at the University of Granada (UGR)
This type of jellyfish is characterised by its imposing size and the blue dots that adorn its body
making it "an impressive visual spectacle"
especially when it is alive and floating in its natural habitat
These jellyfish play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem and are an important part of the diet of species like sea turtles and sunfish
the 'Rhizostoma pulmo' is of little danger to humans
Its bite may cause mild irritation in sensitive areas of the body or in people with increased sensitivity
but in general it does not pose a serious health risk
explained that the presence of jellyfish on the coasts is mainly influenced by the sea currents
which can drag both these species and rubbish towards the shore
conditions have not favoured the proliferation and reproduction of jellyfish
The most common species on the coast is the Pelagia noctiluca
have not been sighted unlike in previous years
This species is rare in the Mediterranean and is characterised by its size
symbiosis with other organisms and less venomous tentacles

The famous 'Casa Acantilado' (cliff house) or 'Casa del Dragón' (dragon house) in Salobreña, on Granada province's Costa Tropical, which has been featured in programmes about luxury homes and unique architecture, is up for sale.
Its price is not for all budgets but, considering the qualities and design, it is viewed as one of the Costa Tropical's architectural icons. The house was available for holiday rental, but now it is for sale. Its price: 1.5 million euros.
It is built into the mountain, which means that it offers an average temperature of 20C all year round and offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.
The 'dragon house' has nothing to do with the famous HBO series which came out after it was built. Instead it is thanks to the zinc tiles that resemble dragon scales which play with the geometry and give the effect on the roof.
This unique villa, designed by Gilbartolome Architects, has attracted the attention of international companies such as the BBC and Netflix. It has a plot of 725m², of which 206m² are built on, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
According to Costa Tropical Real Estate, which is listing the property, "the exterior design of the house features curves that, from different perspectives, resemble a dragon emerging from its lair or the waves of the Mediterranean Sea". This "exceptional structure" is not only aesthetically impressive, but also perfectly adapted to the steep 42-degree slope on which it was built.
The specialised portal explains that the interior of the villa has been designed to maximise the sea view. The common areas, including the kitchen, dining room and living room, are arranged in a cascade, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an amphitheatre, "where the spectacle is the view of the sea itself".
On the upper floor there are three bedrooms, each with sea view and private balcony. There are two bathrooms on this level, one with a bathtub and the other with a shower.
The property is equipped with a private infinity pool, which blends in with the surroundings and also looks over the sea.

In a scene not unlike the end of a James Bond film
the impressive Kingdom 5KR yacht sails along the waters of Salobreña beach
on Granada's Costa Tropical as beach-goers look on in awe
The yacht played a prominent role in the unofficial 1983 Bond film Never Say Never Again
in which it served as the mobile headquarters of the film's baddie
One of the beach-goers to catch a glimpse of the luxury yacht this week was Cristina
a local resident who was sunbathing when she spotted it
"It was very close by and we didn't know it was so famous," she said
measures 85 metres in length and has been a symbol of luxury in the world of yachting since its construction in 1980
Mónica and Mabel had been on the beach all day and were very surprised when they saw it
Mabel was hoping to get a closer look: "We are going to stay here until they pick us up," she joked
has was also surprised to see a large yacht on the coast
He watches the beach every day and said he is used to seeing smaller boats
as far as I could see with my binoculars," he explained
This yacht has had several owners since its construction
a Saudi arms magnate who christened it Nabila
Then Khashoggi sold the yacht to Donald Trump
Trump sold it to Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal
reflecting his Kingdom Holding Company and his initials
The vessel was built by Benetti in Italy and completed in 1980 and features an exterior design by Jon Bannenberg
it is approximately 85.65 metres long and 13 metres wide
It can reach a top speed of approximately 20 knots and has a large capacity tank for long ocean crossings
The interior is luxuriously decorated and features multiple suites
it has been well maintained and has received several upgrades and maintenance over the years to ensure that it remains in good condition
Renting an apartment for a week this summer on the Granada coast is between seven and 12 per cent more expensive than in 2023
The price range for a holiday on the province's Costa Tropical varies from 1,500 euros a week for an apartment in the Playa Granada area in Motril or in the Salomar area of Salobrena
to 900 euros a week on Cambriles beach in Castell de Ferro
Motril is the most expensive town on the Granada coast and is the seventh most expensive destination in Andalucía behind areas in Marbella including Puerto Banús
according to the latest report by Tecnitasa
a valuation and consultancy company which has a number of offices in Spain
Playa Granada has undergone a significant change in recent years
Renting a 90-metre-square apartment for seven days in summer cost an average of 700 euros four years ago and now stands at 1,500 euros
while Playa de Poniente has now reached 1,350 euros
850 euros more expensive than in 2020 and 100 above the average price set last summer
During the pandemic the Costa Tropical was the cheapest holiday destination in Andalucía
Nowadays the scenario is completely different
although the price increase is reflected in all coastal towns in Spain
a week's holiday in Torrenueva Costa would have cost 350 euros a week
tourists have discovered the town in recent years and it has become more expensive
Rents have shot up 142 per cent to around 850 euros for a 80-metre-squared apartment
Salomar in Salobreña is also one of the most expensive places to spend the summer on the Granada coast where visitors can also expect to pay around 1,500 euros per month
which has been a favourite among tourists for decades
the average holiday rental for a flat in Velilla is 1,216 euros
In San Cristóbal holiday lets have gone up by 500 euros a week to over 900 euros - in 2020 they were 800 euros
In La Herradura families will have to pay approximately 920 euros a week for summer holidays
According to the same consultancy firm Almeria city and Rincón de la Victoria are the cheapest holiday destinations in Andalucía for the second year running at 750 and 730 euros
the most expensive places exceed 3,000 euros per week and include Santanyi
Ibiza and Pollensa on the Balearic Islands and Puerto Banús in Marbella
The cheapest places are Moncófar and Vinaroz
Once again jet skis are causing problems for the authorities along Granada province's Costa Tropical in the south of Spain
This year the incidents have moved from Almuñécar-La Herradura to Motril
where several incidents have already been reported due to the misuse of these watercraft
on San Cristóbal beach in Almuñécar the Guardia Civil had to intervene from the air with a helicopter and fined three individuals for the inappropriate use of jet skis as they were also close to other bathers in unauthorised areas
The Guardia Civil together with the Local Police are launching a prevention campaign aimed at all jet ski users
with the aim of providing clear information on correct and incorrect uses
This initiative aims to reduce accidents and promote a responsible and safe use of jet skis during the summer season
checks will be carried out on the various companies offering jet ski rental services to ensure compliance with the regulations in force
Measures will also be implemented to control the access of these jet skis to the beaches
thus guaranteeing the safety of swimmers in the area
Almuñécar-La Herradura town hall will continue to monitor beaches with drones that can report incidents to the Guardia Civil
"This action has been brought forward from last year and will continue until September," explained Lucía González
informative signs will be installed on the beaches for users of these boats
work is being carried out to mark the beaches so that there are no further incidents
municipal authorities have limited powers to "curb" inappropriate use of these vehicles
They have shown their opposition to nuisance jet skis that are not affiliated with companies that operate legally in the area
The companies responsible for renting jet skis play a crucial role in mitigating the problems
These companies strive to educate users to comply with the rules so that there are no incidents
a leading water sport company in Almuñécar
The profile of those who demand these services generally includes groups of friends and couples
This company offers both guided tours and free rental of jet skis
provided that users have the corresponding watercraft licence
A 66-year-old woman was injured when a dog attacked her in Salobreña
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday 12 May when the woman was walking her own dog in the Matagallares countryside
which was on its own on the road bit the woman's right arm several times
A couple who happened to be in the area at the time managed to get the dog away from the woman by hitting the dog with a stick
The animal fled and the woman was treated at the local health centre
She is having treatment for her injuries and recovering well
She reported the incident to the Guardia Civil on Monday
Several residents have reported the frequent presence of the dog in Matagallares which has a collar
The local Platadorma para la Defensa de la Seguridad (platform for the defence of safety) has warned local residents who frequent the cota 200 area of the road to exercise caution until they locate the animal
With the arrival of the warm weather and the start of the summer season
town halls are once again warning people about the dangers of jumping into the sea from rocks
including Salobreña in Andalucía's Granada province
the activity is forbidden and carries hefty fines for anyone caught doing it
despite the warnings there are still those who think it’s OK
but it's very dangerous," says a beach-goer who watches them from the shore
"It's very scary because under the water the rocks are very sharp," adds the beach lifeguard
Jumping from El Peñón is a high-risk activity and a ‘non-sport’ that Salobreña town hall is trying to discourage with fines of up to 3,000 euros
"It's a good measure to put a lot of people off
but I don't think it's enough to stop everyone from jumping," says another of the people on Salobreña beach
who follow the young jumpers' progress with some trepidation
"The highest is 28 metres and then there is a long pole from which you can jump from 32 metres"
You can't see where the rocks end and you can hit yourself against one as you fall"
the town hall will have to rely on common sense to realise that jumping into the sea from the rocks is just plain dangerous
Hundreds of walkers taking part in the annual ‘Desbandá’ remembrance walk arrived at the bridge over the Guadalfeo river in Salobreña on Sunday to remember the victims of the massacre of 1937
was unveiled to honour the memory of the victims
On 8 February 1937 thousands of civilians lost their lives during bombings along the Malaga to Almeria road as they fled Malaga city after the arrival of Franco’s troops during Spain’s Civil War
The event was attended by the mayor of Salobreña
the provincial deputy for historical memory
Fátima Gómez and the sub-delegate of the central government in Granada
One survivor who attended the unveiling said
"Although I have no memories because I was only six months old
I do have to recognise the courage of those families and women with children.”
The Monument to the victims of 'La Desbandá' was designed and made by José Galisteo
Salobreña town hall is making progress with its plan to pedestrianise the old town and has created a one-way system to avoid traffic jams
The problem of parking and congestion has often given rise to problems between residents and visitors in its narrow streets and due to a lack of parking spaces
The latest project has been to install signposts and arrows that have turned Calle Ladera de la Cruz into a one-way street
The council wants to make life in the old town easier for its residents and put a stop to the exodus of people selling up and moving
including extending the bus service to weekends during the summer and installing signage to discourage visitors from driving into the town
a special plan for the protection of historic centres was drawn up and a commission was set up which
took measures to gradually reduce traffic and introducing improvements without affecting tourism
Traffic has been a big problem in Salobreña for many years
There is limited parking and its narrow streets mean that driving through the town is not easy
the old town is protected by the regional government as an important site of Andalusian Historical Heritage and the castle walls are an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC)
This means that any house renovations are prohibited and this has led to many residents trying to sell their properties
The council wants to modify the planning law so that renovations are not impossible and that the old town is not completely abandoned
The revision of the town’s general urban plan (PGOU)
although not a pressing issue for the council
For the last five years green patches have been appearing in the sea off Salobreña
this year they appear to be back with a vengeance and not only in Salobreña; they have also been spotted this week off Playa de la Guardia
Bathers are worried that the patches could be toxic and are calling on the town halls to analyse them
but municipal biologists claim that they are probably the remains of algae and other marine microorganisms
who has spent "almost all her life" holidaying in Salobreña
said that she got up early on Monday (25 July) to swim
precisely because the water is not usually cloudy at this time of day
but from her balcony she could already see that the green “bland blob” that she’d seen on Sunday afternoon had extended along “the whole shoreline”
"There is no way to get around it and few dare to go into the water
It's a real eyesore." Carolina went on to say
"From the start of summer the water gets cloudy from midday onwards
At other times it's clear that it's sewage
Other residents have also reported the presence of the green patches to the various councils' environmental departments and another resident contacted Granada province’s IDEAL newspaper to report the problem
"Nobody can tell us if it is toxic or what is happening
they tell us that they do analyses but we never know the results"
In fact residents are evening considering organising a protest to demand that the town halls do something about it
said that they have called the tourist office several times to warn bathers that the water is a "strange" green colour and that they would be contacting the Mancomunidad de Municipios - the body that oversees the Costa Tropical’s local authorities; to see if they will take samples
The newspaper has contacted the town council and the Guardia Civil but has not yet received a response
German-born artist Lotta Leon is exhibiting her latest collection of abstract and semi-abstract works that present her impressions of Andalucía - Fantasías Andaluzas - at the cultural centre in La Cala de Mijas from Friday 1 to Monday 18 March
The former teacher of philosophy and literature
especially the cultural heritage of the Moors
The artist says she is guided by an “animistic view of the world”
and many of her works are based on rock structures
or abstract colour carpets based on photographs of plants and flowers
photographically captures the architectural structures of Moorish buildings such as the Alhambra and transforms them into semi-abstract worlds through multiple exposures that reveal the power of past cultures in a new light
when the artists will be on hand to answer questions about her work

These openings span a wide range of fields from construction to hospitality and even include positions for receptionists and concierges
National Geographic magazine has lauded Salobreña as one of Granada’s most stunning towns
a fact that the town’s white-washed buildings and commanding castle views readily affirm
It’s this backdrop that sets the stage for an array of job vacancies aimed at bolstering the town’s appeal to tourists
One notable vacancy is with Constructora San Jose for a ‘preventive resource for a large-scale hydraulic project’
The role requires a class B driving licence but remains accessible to those without formal education
the construction sector seeks a bricklayer with a 20-hour specialised course and their own transport

The hospitality industry in Salobreña is equally inviting
with positions open for waiters needing no prior experience
These roles offer flexible working hours ranging between 20 and 40 hours a week
a full-time receptionist position is available at a local hotel
opening doors for newcomers to the workforce
prospective candidates should visit employment portals such as Infojobs

Granada province in the Andalucía region is home to the most dangerous stretch of road in Spain according to the 'Evaluation of the State Road Network' report
prepared by the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) and based on data from the period 2020-2022
According to the report it is a 17.8 kilometre section of the N-323 national road
which is located between kilometre points 172.5 and 190.3; this corresponds to the route between the junction with the A-346 to Ugíjar
near the Rules dam and the town of Vélez de Benaudalla
and the point at which the road joins the GR-14
a total of five major accidents were recorded
resulting in one fatality and four serious injuries
this is not the stretch of road in Granada with the highest gross road accident figures
There is another which appears on the list published by the motorists' club: a 16 kilometre stretch on the N-340
the national road which links the Granada province with Almeria
It is located between kilometre points 312.9 and 328.9 between Almuñécar and Salobreña and which continues almost until meeting the aforementioned section of the N-323
which resulted in two fatalities and up to 11 seriously injured
The average daily traffic intensity of traffic on the N-323 is just 2,140 vehicles
while on the road to Almería the figure is almost five times higher
the researchers point out that the higher the concentration of accidents in places with a lower volume of traffic
established by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL)
is used to carry out this type of study in most European countries
the 17.8 kilometre stretch of the Bailén-Motril road exceeds the value of 90 for the risk index (RI)
which makes it one of the eight of these characteristics that the study indicates in the whole of Spain
The IR value in the 2020-2022 period climbed to 119.9 points
Although this stretch of road has already appeared in previous reports
its risk level has escalated significantly in recent years: for example
in the 2017-2019 period the risk index was 36.8 points
Since then it has increased more than threefold
there were at least two serious accidents in the vicinity of this stretch of road involving motorcyclists
One motorcyclist was killed and the other two were injured

The number of jellyfish stings reported on Granada province's Costa Tropical has gone down by 90 per cent this year compared with summer 2023
The yellow flag and jellyfish signal to warn beachgoers hasn't been raised so far this summer and fewer than 10 stings have been treated at each lifeguard post
there have been only 60 lifeguard interventions in total compared to 251 last year
the summer of 2018 holds the record when more than 3,000 stings were treated
the Red Cross has participated in 61 actions compared to the 279 in which it collaborated in the same period last year
the first aid services acted in 231 jellyfish stings compared to seven this summer
the presence or absence of jellyfish is due to several factors
The winds displace the superficial layer of the water (due to the coriolis effect and the Eckman's spiral) that drags the jellyfish and also remains of rubbish to the shores
currents have not been favourable to their proliferation or reproduction this year
The species most frequently observed on the coast is the 'Pelagia noctiluca'
pink creature with eight tentacles that it uses as a net to capture its food
a rare jellyfish in the Mediterranean that can weigh up to 40 kilos has not been spotted this year either
It first appeared on the Spanish coasts in 2012 and even then there was no photographic evidence to confirm its presence
The first sightings of this species occurred in Murcia
It is translucent white with purple tones and it has long tentacles that are grey and the ends
They can reach a length of between two and three metres
they have numerous mouths and feed on plankton
Rhizostoma luteum has a special feature compared to other jellyfish: it can live with other organisms
There are fish that live among its tentacles or in its umbrella-like body
but they are not as painful as some smaller species of jellyfish

Casa Del Acantilado offers stunning views of the Alboran Sea in the Mediterranean
the unusual property makes for an eye-opening spectacle
The house was designed by Pablo Gil and Jaime Bartolome
directors and owners of GilBartolome Architects
Jaime said that the project looked to promote important ideas - such as 'joyful living
innovative construction techniques to make the project feasible
and the cave as an environmental strategy.'
The creative process behind the designs was extremely complex
as a young couple had proposed the house be built on a hill with a 42 degree incline
It was decided that the house would be buried into a steep slope and feature two floors with a large terraced living area
the 'House on the Cliff,' as the property has come to be known
Jaime said: 'The owner of the house is very happy and we have proof of him and his family enjoying life within the house
'The project has drawn massive attention from architects and designers but also from the general public.'

Normally at the end of June, town halls along the Costa Tropical in Granada province are getting everything ready for the summer, including preparing the beach showers. However, this year the situation ahead of the busy summer season is uncertain.
It has rained, but not enough. Guaranteeing domestic supply of the limited water reserves is a priority for an area whose population triples in July and August and this is why some town halls are expected to keep the beach showers turned off this summer.
In the province's most popular tourist resort, Almuñécar-La Herradura, environment and beaches councillor Lucía González explained that the most likely scenario is that the showers will not be available due to the drought.
Water restrictions have been in place since 2022, but up until now they have been brought in in September and more as a show of solidarity with other places that have had to impose cuts and Castell de Ferro town hall did the same. Almuñécar's local drought decree recommends not washing cars or filling swimming pools and calls for individual responsibility.
In neighbouring Salobreña municipal sources told Europa Press that the footbaths would be open but that the showers would remain turned off as one of the measures that has been put in place to save water. In Andalucía as a whole other popular destinations are taking similar measures, for example in Cadiz city there will be no outdoor showers or footbaths this summer.
The Mancomunidad association of town halls on the Costa Tropical launched a public awareness campaign last week. President Rafael Caballero and the manager of the local water board Alejandro Jurado said they intend to make the population aware of a responsible use of water in view of the drought situation.
A number of towns on the Costa Tropical including Jete, Otívar, Letegí, Sorvilán, Polopos-La Mamola, Gualchos-Castell de Ferro, Rubite, Albondón and Albuñol have already been warned that restrictions are likely. This does not mean that restrictive measures will be taken just yet, but the agency will continue to study the situation of each place.

and founder and faithful leader of The Rum Experience
his all inclusive rum venture that has seen him travel the world doing what he loves most: tasting rum and educating others about this spirit that often brings people together in the best possible way
No “mothers ruin” was ever used to describe rum (sorry gin reapers out there)
and when you think of rum it probably evokes feelings of warm fuzzies
Everyone has had that first brush with rum
that first experience that is usually followed with a laugh and a giggle
With the leadership and organisation of Ian Burrell, in collaboration with Montero Rum, The Rum Experience University hits Motril this September to educate people on the much-loved spirit and get the spot light on the much-deserved Costa del Ron
It’s a five-day intensive course offering a one-stop shop for rum education and the opportunity to gain a recognised diploma
This is for professionals and rum enthusiasts alike
Students will experience excursions that include the history and making of rum
plus how to make a world class cocktail and hear amazing key note speakers like cocktail historian Anastasia Miller and World Tiki Authoritative Jeff “Beachbum” Berry
Spaces are limited and the course costs £899
but what is included makes this an even sweeter deal than it already is
Over the course of three days I got re-acquainted with my college tipple
and learned just how sophisticated yet joyous this spirit really is

Explorers following the trail will experience rum and food pairings from some hip and happening venues in and around the area
You’re really spoilt for choice with excellent meats

it was so tasty that my new friend T (rum has a way of bringing people together) actually purchased a full leg with trotter and transported it back to London for an upcoming party
She also vowed to pair it with a signature rum cocktail for her guests
Next was post-dinner drinks at Flanagan’s and Belle Epoque where
the laughs were louder and the jokes were cruder
our rum education included the Montero distillery – a sight to behold – not that I am very well-versed in distilling anything
massive vats of some liquid that I assume becomes rum
we met the master blender who everyone hugged for creating such tasty memories
and hit up a sugar cane field and the bottling plant with their new – and rather lovely – celebratory anniversary labels
We rounded out the edutainment with delicious food and drink at Los Moriscos
Soho Lounge and a fabulous good bye lunch at Oleaje – armed with a new take on Spain
and I highly suggest everyone gets in on the taste – or
