putting a traditional five-wire fence wasn’t an option and due to the landscape
temporary fencing doesn’t make sense,” Jarvis says
“We were left with trying to find another place to run cows or feed them hay and supplement through winter
The cost of feeding the amount of cows we collared would have been about $26,000
so it’s far more financially friendly for us to use Vence than it is than any of our other options.”
This technology also allowed Jarvis to keep the cows in locations they were already familiar with
“Virtual fencing allowed us to run our cattle in two fields they already know and do really well
which was a lot easier than putting them in a completely different field,” Jarvis says
the BLM has two weeks from the date of containment to put together a fire recovery plan
“The BLM office was under the clock to make decisions about the recovery and whether it will be seeded or it won’t be seeded
“We had less than two weeks to make our decision and how we were going to operate.”
The family worked with their local field office in Twin Falls
and the Shoshone office to borrow a base station
which had been used for a previous virtual fencing project
They purchased the collars and batteries themselves
Installing batteries and preparing collars to use for virtual fencing
Easy-to-install collars are adjustable to fit each cow
The Jarvis family uses virtual fencing collars and a base station on their BLM allotment to keep cows off area burned in wildfire
The base station would be moved three times within the allotment to communicate based on where the cows were located
Computer software shows where the virtual fencelines were and the movement of cattle throughout the boundaries
Jarvis admits the first two weeks were a big learning curve as they had to work with Vence to determine where the base station would be located in relationship to the cows
“We are moving the cows three different times
so there will be three different base station locations and they had to be predetermined so we knew we had the right amount of coverage for grazing that area,” Jarvis says
All this took place during the fall and one of the busiest times when the family was gathering
While learning new technology on top of all the fall work was a little overwhelming
Jarvis explains it was completely worth the extra effort
“I think for us and other ranchers in our situation
being able to use this tool and continue grazing after a fire has such a positive impact,” Jarvis says
“I look around at all the fires that happened last summer
and I know how many people have had to liquidate their herds or completely sell out
energy and effort into building the genetics that are in your cow herd
We probably would have been faced with some of those very same difficult decisions had we not had this technology available to use.”
joined the Jarvis’ to help collar cattle and set up the system
She says every ranch has different goals for using virtual fencing
“Some ranchers are wanting to track their cows more easily even within interior fencing,” she says
especially if you’re in very tough terrain
Sometimes that fencing cost can be $15,000-$50,000 a mile
When you have all those wildfires that are happening and it’s eight miles of fence
rebuilding is too labor and cost prohibitive
There are lots of different types of stakeholders who are always wanting to get engaged with our Vence system.”
director or commercial operations with Vence
which is a U.S.-based company owned by Merck Animal Health
says Vence focuses on three pillars — profitability
‘how do I intend to make money using this technology?’” Tiller says
saving on replacement or maintenance costs for fencing or replacing the cost of an employee to move fence.”
Tiller also notes what’s unique about virtual fencing is the ability to utilize ancillary benefits
which provide support to the main purpose of the operation
“Ranching properties can also utilize wildlife habitat,” Tiller says
if fishing is an income stream to the ranch and protecting your stream sides is something that will make you more money in the end
you can exclude those cattle from going into the water and eroding the bank
the second pillar — sustainability — can have multiple definitions
we recognize wildfires aren’t going away,” he says
“When you look at the western states with a majority of ranchers relying on public lands grazing
if you don’t have fencing or funding to rebuild fences and you can’t keep cattle contained and manage the landscape
“It’s not only sustainability of the resource
“We can’t lose 50% of our rangelands and still have 28-29 million cows needing to graze.”
Legacy is the third pillar that virtual fencing provides
“Most everybody on the ranch has a dream of passing it down to the next generation and the only way we’re going to have the right to operate is by being really good stewards and making sure that the public understands how we are taking care of the land,” Tiller says
prefer to pass on land at a better state than they inherit.”
Vence was designed for big remote areas to incorporate LoRa (long-range communication) through a system of base stations and collars that work autonomously once the directions are set
They utilize a high-density lithium battery mill spec battery designed to operate in the worse conditions
from hot and humid in Florida to below freezing in Montana
“We designed a robust system around cattle and rugged conditions and landscapes with very minimal communications that we can magnify,” Tiller says
The concept of virtual fencing technology has been around for decades but continues to evolve
Virtual fencing uses behavior modification based on audio and electrical cues from a collar device to keep cattle within a virtual boundary using GPS
This geospatial technology uses satellites to pinpoint a location
A virtual fence can also be used to keep animals out of certain areas

Jean-Paul Sartre and D.H. Lawrence fell in love with the sounds, sights and pine-filled smells of Saint Paul de Vence. James Baldwin lived in a villa here from 1970 until his death in 1987. Even Winston Churchill, who developed a flair for painting in the South of France
fell for the charms of this fairytale hamlet: it is widely believed that a canvas depicting a street corner with a fountain was painted by the statesman here in the mid-1940s

SaveSave this storySaveSince James Baldwin’s death nearly 40 years ago
has drawn a procession of acolytes to the Provençal community of Saint-Paul de Vence
where he spent the last 17 years of his life
The 300-year-old villa in which he resided no longer exists: By 2019 developers had converted the site into a luxury apartment complex. But that hasn’t deterred generations of admirers
inflamed and enlightened by Baldwin’s prose
Seizing the occasion of the writer’s centennial year
My first stop was a table at a Baldwin hangout
the Café de la Place on Place du Général de Gaulle
for a croque monsieur and a double espresso
John the Divine: “You gave me a language to dwell in—a gift so perfect it seems my own invention
I have been thinking your spoken and written thoughts for so long
I have been seeing the world through your eyes for so long
was ill from what was thought by some to be hepatitis
physically and emotionally exhausted by his pace of creative output and downcast from a sputtering Civil Rights Movement
yours truly (Jimmie B.) arrived in Vence rageful over America’s backsliding from a so-called “racial reckoning” in 2020
demoralized by the protracted war in the Middle East
exhausted by the masks I’m often compelled to wear
and feeling somewhat ill from the lingering consequences of high blood pressure and kidney transplantation
I was going to kill somebody or be killed.”
I came to realize as I roamed the back streets
had made his home here not just to flee but to be enveloped in a place of permanence
Saint-Paul de Vence has been settled for 1,000 years
Its oldest quarters lie behind 50-foot stone walls
In the backyard was his so-called WELCOME TABLE
where he would receive Nina Simone and William Styron
the residents took to the charming raconteur from Harlem who delighted in engaging in conversation with anyone
His rented two-story cottage of stucco and stone stood behind high iron gates
and the home where Baldwin lived and wrote
The orchard on the grounds could sustain lemons
In the backyard was his so-called Welcome Table
the belatedly appreciated Black American painter whom Baldwin cared for in his later years
On the mantel was the French Legion of Honor he was awarded in 1986
has no official acknowledgment of Baldwin’s homestead
must navigate narrow cobblestone streets lined with galleries
pouvez-vous me dire comment trouver l’endroit où vivait James Baldwin?” I haltingly asked the solemn-looking woman in l’office de tourisme
“Je vois ‘Baldwin museum’ sur Google Maps?”
I didn’t know if I should feel relieved or offended
She brushed back her gray-streaked locks and leaned over the counter
I have read this book many times.” In a flurry of only slightly accented English
she told me she had lived for decades in Chicago
When I asked what she missed most about her life in the States
“I like the American way of getting things done
exists only in books or in the stories the locals tell about him or in the spirit of those who come to find it
The American exile who had embraced the République française had become
the outcast once more—a figure quietly revered yet
as did Lady Gaga and Celine Dion.) Back home
Simpson’s death earlier that week and how his 1995 acquittal
It was a week in which Baldwin would have had a lot to say
Or maybe the point was that those of us who’ve followed in his footsteps should say what needs to be said or explored in our own voices
that I had found what I was looking for in Saint-Paul de Vence

Actor Donald Pleasence and Rolling Stone Bill Wyman bought homes there

and this gorgeous hill village in the hinterland of the Cote d’Azur remains a magnet for creatives
views of the olive groves and the ocean beyond the ancient ramparts and a sprinkle of stardust available nowhere else in rural Provence
Without the breathtaking vision of print-maker and dealer Aimé Maeght (pronounced Mag)
Saint-Paul might have slipped into postwar obscurity
He spent the war years forging passports for Jews while escaping Gestapo spies
then after the war created a world-class museum
which this year celebrated its 60th anniversary
Calders and Giacomettis that are part of the permanent collection are worth the trip alone
and more than 200,000 people visit every year
During the war it was Bonnard who urged Maeght to move inland from Nice
where he had allowed his printing presses to be used by the French Resistance under cover of a gallery opened in the city in the hope of keeping his clandestine activity hidden
the great post-Impressionist persuaded the dealer to hide out in the hills around Vence
His wife Marguerite became a muse to the great artist
Liberation saw the couple opening a lauded Paris gallery
setting up a famed art magazine and building one of the greatest private collections of 20th century modern art
But tragedy struck in 1953 when their second son
A decade later they transformed their home high above Saint-Paul into a private art foundation to honour their beloved boy
Perhaps Chagall was thinking of the Jews saved by Maeght’s forged papers when he created a huge mosaic for the exterior of the museum; he also donated a giant floor-to-ceiling canvas as a showpiece for the collection
Maeght and his wife all lie side by side in the cemetery of Saint-Paul de Vence
which all called their home for the final decades of their lives
Looking every inch a purpose-built museum of modern art today
despite its original incarnation as a residence
Fondation Maeght requires the best part of a day to explore and enjoy
to take in a decent handful of its 13,000 masterpieces
Come in the morning to experience the sea breeze and land a table on the delightful terrace whose café served the best dish of my four-day trip – a plate of the deep-fried courgette flowers
here served with a green olive pesto swirled with a touch of lemony mayonnaise
The galleries have recently been extended to display many more riches previously consigned to the vaults
and as both the permanent and temporary exhibitions are laid out over several rooms
An alfresco lunch here is so much more than a quick fuel stop
given its striking central fountain and expansive view of the beautiful sculpture garden leading to the galleries
While the museum is easily reached by car from the Riviera beach resorts
art lovers will find a richer cultural perch in Saint-Paul-de-Vence proper
although tourists are deterred from soaking up the atmosphere of the Colombe d’Or where the famous have hung out for decades at the foot of the walled village
No such preciousness is practised at the Café de la Place opposite
where back in the day artists chatted over coffee or drinks; it overlooks the town’s pétanque pitch
a small weekly market and an impressive metal sculpture
one of many that stop visitors in their tracks as they ascend the ramparts
You have to be brave as there are no guard rails
although there is also a less scary flat route through the village at their base
as well as a hilly pedestrianised street running through the middle
Most intriguing of the boutiques is the gallery selling limited- edition cushions bearing designs by Picasso
Miro et al alongside Chagall posters and other affordable souvenirs of the artists who made the village famous
Close by is Chagall’s tomb in the cemetery
a must-see to pay respects by leaving a pebble or two
There is only one hotel within the walled village – Le Saint-Paul
whose 16th-century stone townhouses have been carefully converted into a Relais & Chateaux hotel
and there is no step-free access from the street
although an interior lift serves guest rooms
but otherwise outdoor space is limited to a tiny front terrace and a lovely outdoor restaurant
which offers breakfast and an enchanting – if pricy – alfresco option
We ate equally well at Les Remparts restaurant next door
which rewards those who can climb a few steep stone stairs with the town’s most stunning view over hills and olive groves to the not-so-distant Med less than ten miles down the hill
Sleeping in the village is the only way to truly appreciate the charm of Saint-Paul in high season
when throngs of day-trippers can disturb the peace until the magic hour when they disappear
the street lights gradually come on and the peaceful village can be appreciated with an evening stroll around the near-deserted golden stone walls
Staying at the hotel also means you are well-placed for the excellent guided walking tours put on by the tourist office
better enjoyed in the morning than the heat of the afternoon
Highlights include a visit to the ornate fountain
from where a few steps lead to the top of the hill with its bell tower
village museum and most importantly the exquisite Folon Chapel
decorated in 2005 by artist Jean-Michel Folon in homage to the philanthropic brotherhood known as the Penitents Blancs
and the great conversation piece is a sculpture in the middle of the nave
the best ice cream in town is at the Dolce Vita parlour perched on the summit of the hill
Given that Nice is the international gateway to Saint-Paul-de- Vence
it’s worth stopping for a night in the city to take in the major museums dedicated to Chagall and Matisse
both on the same hilly main road to the Cimiez neighbourhood lined with astonishing belle époque villas
You can book a stay through cultural specialist tour operator Kirker
which also works with the Hotel Saint-Paul and can arrange museum tickets in advance to beat the queues
Visitors in the spring will enjoy early sunshine while Britain still shivers and have the village of Saint-Paul all to themselves before the summer day-trippers arrive to disturb the peace and magical ambience
EasyJet serves Nice direct from many UK airports including London
Culture specialist tour operator Kirker (kirkerholidays.com) offers three nights’ bed and breakfast at Le Saint-Paul for £1,325 per person including return flights from London to Nice
car hire and entrance to the Maeght Foundation

His appointment as acting deputy director will expand on his current roles
in which he has made major contributions to the Institute’s research on diversity
Vence will assume a more elevated position at the Institute
helping the NHGRI leadership advance NHGRI’s mission and priorities
The NHGRI deputy director position has been vacant since Mark Guyer
retired in 2014. The upcoming appointment of Vence as the NHGRI acting deputy director reflects the Institute’s desire to have a leader at the highest possible level to guide programmatic activities to advance work related to diversity
but also lead NIH and NHGRI’s efforts to address anti-racism and social justice
These are significant priority areas for NHGRI
One of Vence’s first responsibilities as acting deputy director will be to create a new Office of Workforce Diversity and Health Equity within the NHGRI Office of the Director
The new office will work towards NHGRI’s goals Vence will work closely with other NHGRI leaders to develop the office’s mission and vision
and lead efforts to recruit its first director
which described the imperative to enhance the diversity of the genomics workforce for achieving the promise of genomics
Vence will focus on implementing this action agenda and will continue to be one of three NHGRI leaders serving on key NIH-wide committees as part of the NIH UNITE Initiative
which aims to end structural racism in biomedical research
Vence also has a long history of starting successful initiatives at NHGRI. He established the Education and Community Involvement Branch and served as its inaugural chief. The branch thrived under his leadership, including the creation of the Smithsonian-NHGRI exhibition, Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code
His research program focuses primarily on the social implications of new scientific knowledge
He and his group study how genomics influences the use of the constructs of race and ethnicity in biomedical research and clinical care
as well as how genomics worsens or improves health inequities
a condition that is affected by emerging curative genomic technologies and that faces significant health disparities both in the US and worldwide
Vence’s appointment as the NHGRI acting deputy director is anticipated to begin in early summer
Last month, NHGRI released a new and updated brochure about the Institute. This ~35-page brochure showcases the key elements of NHGRI and features information about NHGRI’s history, organization, and values. The brochure also highlights key Institute programs from its various research areas. PDF and flipbook versions of the new NHGRI brochure are available on NHGRI’s website
with print copies becoming available on request in the future
NHGRI and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) will host a virtual webinar on June 24-25 on “Scientific Updates on Organic Acidemias and Homocystinurias.” This gathering will bring together researchers
and patient advocates from around the world to participate in sessions on the natural history
and treatments associated with these disorders
Participants will also review the opportunities and challenges for patients and their physicians
Charles Rotimi, Ph.D, distinguished NIH investigator in the NHGRI Intramural Research Program and director of the Trans-NIH Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the category of medical sciences
The academy was founded in 1780 by John Adams
International members have included Charles Darwin
Charles received this honor for his efforts in globalizing genomics and his studies that explored how the increased genetic diversity in African ancestry populations affects strategies for disease gene mapping
Embrace the interdisciplinary and team-oriented nature of genomics research — starting with the Human Genome Project
some of the most challenging genomics endeavors have benefited from the creation and management of large
“Interdisciplinary and team-oriented research has been a signature feature of the Human Genome Project from the beginning and has been a major staple of NHGRI-sponsored projects ever since
leading to transformative changes in essentially all major fields of biology and medicine
With the strategic vision of improving human health at the forefront of genomics for the next 10 years
we have highly ambitious goals to fundamentally change how medicine is practiced
Interdisciplinary team research remains an integral component of our efforts
I have been personally involved in several such projects
including positional cloning of a fusion gene in leukemia
the identification of the familial Mediterranean fever gene MEFV
and our current natural history study on patients with a rare genetic disease
Our goals – understanding clinical relevance of all genomic variants identified in the patients and to develop curative therapies for the patients – require the efforts of a team trained in many disciplines.”

HOUSTON – Derion Vence pleaded guilty Thursday to tampering with a corpse and injury to a child -- 4-year-old Maleah Davis -- and was sentenced to 40 years in prison
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg’s Office said in a news release with an update about the case
Maleah and her little brother were all reported missing the morning of May 4
When Vence and Maleah’s brother showed up at a hospital late that night
Her remains were found by the side of a road in Arkansas a month after she disappeared
Maleah was being watched by Vence because her mother was out of state on a trip
Vence eventually told police he had been attacked by unknown men a day earlier while on his way to the airport to pick up the mother along with Maleah and his son
He said that when he woke up after the attack
Officials said his story did not match up with surveillance video
which showed his departure from the apartment with only his son
Ogg’s office noted that additional video review showed him leaving his apartment with a full garbage bag in a laundry basket
an activist and leader of the New Black Panther Nation
said Vence confessed to him to hurting Maleah two years ago
he got angry at Brittany (Maleah’s mother) and when the baby kept asking him about Brittany
he struck Maleah in the head,” Quanell X said
and she was bleeding from her ears and from her nose
and that is the point where he strangled the beautiful young baby
killed her and he took her and dumped her body.”
The Houston-area activist said he believes Vence should have been given the death penalty and had the case go to trial
Quanell X also said Maleah’s mother should have faced charges as well for being complicit
“I believe that definitely Brittany should be charged
Brittany was totally complicit in the murder of her own child,” he said
He alleges Brittany knew that Vence was abusing Maleah prior to her death but did nothing because she didn’t want Vence to go to jail
Tamisha Mendoza is Maleah’s cousin on her dad’s side of the family
Mendoza called the 40-year sentence a slap on the wrist
“True justice will not be served until everyone had something to do with her disappearance and murder is brought before a judge and sentenced,” Mendoza said
which causes serious injury by act or omission
Vence was sentenced to 40 years in prison for intentional injury to a child and 20 years for tampering with a corpse
The Houston Police Department Homicide Division investigated the case
It was prosecuted by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Major Offenders Division
“Children are the most vulnerable members of our community and young Maleah’s death is tragic,” Ogg is quoted as saying in a news release
“We may never have all the answers in this case and our thoughts are with her family.”

De Buck Gallery is delighted to announce Retracing Walkways, our second solo exhibition with Belgian painter Gommaar Gilliams in Saint Paul De Vence
Gilliams’ latest works draw on his continued interest in the theme of ‘collective memory’ whilst also taking a new emphasis on the inherent order of things
Gommaar’s recent paintings reflect their own innate sense of structure with their winding walkways
abstract brushstrokes and varied painterly interventions
In each painting there are distinct yet abstracted symbols: flora
all of which are there to take on a symbolic not literal meaning
full of color and emotion connect these symbols- making the workings of walkways or “mind maps” visible
Once immersed in a dreamy dreamscape by Gilliams
one is drawn into reflection and contemplation
desire and longing emerge; connecting us not only with the artist but also with one another as our “collective memories” merge to create a collective experience

From the years 1948 to 1951, legendary French artist Henri Matisse worked tirelessly on plans for the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence
from the exterior to the details of decoration
A culmination of his long artistic trajectory
it was the first time that a painter had entirely designed every detail of a Chapel in such a comprehensive way
and remains a potent manifestation of Matisse’s artistic sensibility in his mature years
| © Luke McKernan/Flickr
View | takato marui/Flickr
he sought help from a lady named Monique Bourgeois who responded to his advertisement seeking ‘a young and pretty nurse’
Bourgeois tenderly took care of the ailing Matisse
He has described her as ‘a magnificent person’ and whose devotion he appreciated very much
with several drawings and paintings existing as a testament to their bond
| © avilasal/Flickr
In 1946, another vocation called for Monique Bourgeois — this young woman entered into the religious order of the Dominicans
and was officially ordained as Sister Jacques-Marie
she continued to administer care to the painter who eventually bought a home in Vence not far from the convent
Bourgeois confided to Matisse her wish to decorate the oratory fitted out by the nuns in one of the rooms in their convent
But Matisse had bigger ideas and ambitions
He agreed to design a chapel that would be offered to the Dominicans
With the advice of architects Auguste Perret and Milon de Peillon
along with recourse to the skill of the builders and artisans of Vence
Matisse began working solidly on the chapel for the next four years
At the age of seventy-seven and in ill-health
Matisse began the biggest and most challenging work of his entire career
| © wikimedia commons
The completed chapel contains three sets of stained glass windows — making use of a colour trio: a vivid green, an intense yellow and a vibrant blue. The two windows beside the altar depict abstract forms synonymous with the hand of Matisse, entitled the ‘The Tree of Life’. On the wall behind the altar is a large image of St. Dominic
Adorning the side walls are abstract images of flowers and an image of the Madonna and Child
all created in black outlines on white tiles
Rather than the usual image of clasping the child to herself
Matisse chose to show Mary offering her son to the world
On the back wall of the chapel are the traditional fourteen Stations of the Cross
the fourteen stations are depicted individually; however
Matisse chose to incorporate all of them on one wall in a single cohesive composition
The vestments within the chapel use the ecclesiastical colours of the religious seasons: black
There are also two doors carved out of wood designed by Matisse
The chapel is the conclusion of hundreds of preparatory drawings and endless revisions
photos and sketches are on display which show Matisse designing the chapel
The exterior of the chapel can only be recognised by its blue and white tiles
and its centrepiece of a wrought iron cross ordained with crescent moons and golden flames
standing at an extraordinary thirteen meters high
he ‘wanted those entering the chapel to feel themselves purified and lightened of their burdens’
| © Monica Arellano-Ongpin/Flickr
The project was not without its opposition. Some of the Dominican Sisters fiercely resisted the work suggesting that they were baffled by the simplicity and abstraction prevalent within the painter’s work. Matisse’s contemporary, Pablo Picasso also declared that he was distressed and upset to see his fellow artist involved within a church project
Henri Matisse was however a staunch atheist who once wrote that ‘my only religion is love of the work to be created
He responded to Picasso’s complaints with a simple retort: ‘you are like me…what we both search for in art is the climate of our first communion.’ The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary was officially inaugurated on June 25th in 1951
and has been inviting travellers to experience this unique building at the crossroads of art and faith ever since
Whilst the chapel was constructed for a religious purpose; the building stands forever as a testament to the enduring care that was shown to Matisse by Monique Bourgeois
the artist’s relationship with Bourgeois affected him profoundly enough that he was inspired to create a building in her honour
The spiritual space which he envisioned is indeed imbued with the ‘climate of a First Communion’ and a palpable love for the human condition
The Rosary Chapel designed by Henri Matisse is located 466 Avenue Henri Matisse in Vence
