Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC) has introduced a new schedule for the phaseout of its lignite-fired power plants
Greece

In 2019, after the New Democracy party won the elections, the Greek government aspired to phase out coal by 2023. In the meantime, following lengthy debates, speculations and the pressure from the energy crisis, the official target date landed at 2028. However
according to state-controlled PPC’s recent reply within a parliamentary debate
the country will cease burning the solid fossil fuel in 2026
According to the timeline revealed in the document
units 1 and 2 of the Agios Dimitrios coal plant will be closed next month
The decision is based on consultations with the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO)
The facilities Meliti and Megalopolis will be shut down by the end of the year
4 and 5 in Agios Dimitrios to cease operations in 2025
As for the new Ptolemaida 5 lignite plant
an earlier idea was to convert it into a natural gas unit later in the decade so that it remains operational
PPC now seems to consider the option unfeasible
“According to current natural gas and European Union allowance (EUA) prices
the unit will be shut down in 2026,” the document adds
Sdoukou: The production cost in Ptolemaida 5 is EUR 120 per MWh
According to Deputy Minister of the Environment and Energy Alexandra Sdoukou
Ptolemaida 5 has a production cost of EUR 120 per MWh
the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for new solar farms is EUR 40 per MWh to 45 per MWh
The yardstick comes in at EUR 55 per MWh to EUR 65 per MWh for wind farms
another EUR 20 per MWh to EUR 30 per MWh is required for battery storage
It should also be mentioned that the long-term economic viability of new natural gas plants is under threat given the current and projected market conditions. Conventional plants have to align with strict emission regulations based on the European Union’s energy taxonomy.
International bodies such as the European Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) have said that countries willing to support such projects would have to come up with capacity mechanisms.
PPC has the option to push the government for the unit to be included in a future capacity mechanism before converting

The Pan-Macedonian Association of Melbourne and Victoria has revealed its program for the 2024 Dimitria Festival
continuing its tradition in honour of Thessaloniki’s patron saint
The association is striving to engage a broader audience with the 2024 edition of the festival
partnering with a wide range of organisations (many not involved in the Greek community)
elaborated on the major role the Dimitria Festival plays in Melbourne’s Greek cultural program
“The Patriarch’s visit has delayed the program a little but we believe that pivoting towards a more educational program coupled with festivals aimed at connecting with other cultures is what will keep Dimitria relevant in the coming years,” Stefanidis said
“The greatest aspect of Greek culture has always been how accessible it is to anyone who comes into contact with it
We are obligated to keep this tradition going if Melbourne is to remain Australia’s cultural capital.”
The Festival will run numerous initiatives commencing from 26 October until its closing event on 8 December
The association expressed excitement over the entire schedule
particularly the closing which will be a joint collaboration with Heidelberg United and will also serve as the organisation’s Christmas party

Thessaloniki was the Sephardic Jews’ Mediterranean metropolis
They found a welcoming anchorage here when they were chased out of Spain in 1492
in the city that became the “Jerusalem of the Balkans.” Their large community grew to great economic and intellectual prominence and represented the largest of the multicultural city’s three distinct quarters during the Ottoman occupation (the Jewish
The Jewish element shrank after the big fire of 1917 and was all but annihilated in the Holocaust
with some 46,000 Greek Jews and constituents of Thessaloniki being lost in the crematoriums
they were also forgotten by their fellow Thessalonians
Not a single public commemoration event was held to mourn the loss of our Jewish compatriots
while the establishment of monuments to pay homage to them and hold their memory alive dragged on for decades
It was not until 1997 that a memorial to the Holocaust was erected
When the bronze statue was relocated to the city center in 2007
the move was met with surprise and denial instead of satisfaction
More memorials have gone up in the past decade – on the campus of Aristotle University
in the area designated as the Jewish cemetery and in other relevant locations
A catalyst in this change of climate was the historic speech given by then mayor Yiannis Boutaris on the National Day of Remembrance of Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust in 2018
which was a long-overdue homage and apology by the city to its lost citizens
most of the city’s residents remain indifferent and cool toward the issue
sitting on the tombstones of the Jewish cemetery that was violently demolished by the Nazis and locals who took the marble slabs to use as building materials
even for the forecourt of the Church of Agios Dimitrios
The tangible Jewish presence in Thessaloniki is still evident in the city’s architectural heritage
Many of the Jews’ residences have been turned to public use
buildings in an eclectic style that attests to the sophistication and prosperity of their former residents
are the Allatini Villa (now the headquarters of the Regional Authority of Central Macedonia)
the Giacomo Modiano Villa (Folklore Museum) and Casa Bianca (Municipal Art Gallery)
which is where the turbulent romance between Aline Fernandez
the daughter of a wealthy Jewish businessman
and Greek Lieutenant Spyros Alibertis played out
Several listed apartment buildings from the interwar years
fine examples of the architectural trends of Mitteleuropa
Only a handful of the public buildings used by the Jewish community survive though: the hospital
a charity that is used today by a Jewish school
which of all the other religious edifices in the city was spared the Nazis’ destruction because it was being used by the Red Cross
like the Fix brewery and the Allatini flour mill
Several parts of Thessaloniki are associated with the Holocaust: Eleftherias Square
where 46,061 Jews were packed onto trains for the death camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau between March and August of 1943
the last ghetto of the Jews before they were put on the “death trains.” Three more spaces – the present-day Jewish Cemetery
the Jewish Museum and Aristotle University – safeguard the memory and stand witness to the lengthy Jewish presence in the “Madre de Israel.”
There is some comfort to be taken from the recent emergence of a multifaceted interest in the history and memories of Thessaloniki’s Jews
mainly from the Jewish community itself and from the Aristotle University
with the contribution of its Chair of Jewish Studies
it is disappointing and peculiar that the present mayor is turning Eleftherias Square back into a parking lot
in breach of the previous municipal authority’s decision and plan to turn the historic location into a place of homage and memory for our lost fellow Thessalonians

PPC’s lignite plants are to continue operation beyond 2023
in a reversal of the government’s decarbonization policy
0
The government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised in 2019 a quick decarbonization of the country’s power sector through the decommissioning of almost all lignite-fired plants by 2023
the energy crisis has silently led to a postponement
More specifically, the original plan was for all lignite plants to retire by the end of 2023, except for Ptolemaida 5, Public Power Corp.’s (PPC) new unit that was supposed to operate with lignite for a few years before switching to natural gas by 2028 at the latest. Through the plan
Greece would end its consumption of lignite and replace it with renewables and natural gas
Skrekas: Lignite must provide 17% to 20% of electricity in the winter
The energy crisis has placed the security of supply at the forefront of energy policy, while natural gas is no longer seen as the transition fuel because of its high cost. The coal power sector was called upon in the summer to once again increase output to help keep prices down. The plants are currently producing almost 10% of the country’s electricity
According to Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas
the short-term goal is for lignite plants to cover 17% to 20% of the country’s needs during the winter
the ministry and PPC have boosted operations at large lignite mines
as capacity utilization weakened substantially over the past years
Agios Dimitrios 3 and Agios Dimitrios 4 recently received an extension from 2023 to the end of 2025 in order to help secure the Greek system
The permits provide them each with about 30,000 total hours of operation from the middle of 2021 to the end of 2025
It is estimated that currently they have about 20,000 hours left apiece
The ministry argued that the European Union demands a reduction of natural gas consumption as a result of the crisis
Another aspect of the policy turn has to do with PPC’s brand new Ptolemaida 5 plant
which is in the process of testing before commercial operation around the end of 2022
In past years there was a plan to switch fuel from lignite to natural gas at some point from 2026 to 2028 to enable the plant to continue working
the government has been silent about its plans for Ptolemaida 5 and some market players believe it is going to remain a lignite plant at least through 2028 and possibly even further
The energy crisis has created a lot of uncertainty concerning the commercial viability of gas plants compared to coal plants
the high cost of natural gas has made lignite more competitive in the market
Countries like Greece are currently preparing their revised national energy and climate plans (NECPs)
which need to set new goals for 2030 for each technology
According to recent studies
new natural gas plants will have a hard time competing in the wholesale market from 2025
It is true for Greece as well as they would require capacity mechanisms to remain afloat
Since fuel costs directly influence the size of the remuneration mechanism
the Greek government wants to retain all options open
It is why it will be interesting to see the new national goal for natural gas and lignite in the upcoming NECP
which has the biggest capacity for renewable energy of any listed company worldwide
He declined to name the countries he was referring to.Generally

But that proposal needs to be negotiated by EU countries and the European Parliament.Rather than wait

Eighty years ago – on 16 April – Agios Dimitrios and its valley to the west of Katerini were visited by fire and fury as its Allied defenders faced the German invasion of Greece
Thessaloniki and the defences of northern Greece had already fallen
Now the Germans were trying to force their way through the mountains passes and valleys that led to Greece’s central plane and on to the south
This advance would see major battles take place at Vevi and Servia to the west and Platamonas and the Tempe Valley to the east
with Anzac and British troops joining with Greek Army forces outnumbered by superior German forces
Though they all succeeded in holding up the German advance for crucial days
this was at a terrible cost in terms of lives and equipment lost
The defence of Agios Dimitrios was in the hands of three New Zealand Battalions – the 28th Maori
They faced the German 5th Mountain Division
inflicted significant losses on the advancing German force
But evening the defenders was forced to withdraw across Mount Olympus
in driving run through muddy tracks in the dark
the villagers of the region would go on to resist the occupation
were executed at Katerini by German troops on 23 February
in retaliation for the killing of two German guards of a local iron works producing goods for the German war effort
Later in the war the Germans would return to Agios Dimitrios and kill more civilians
The names of all these martyrs to Greece’s freedom are listed on the village war memorial

Now Melbourne’s Agios Dimitrios Olympou Philanthropic and Cultural League is working to honour the New Zealand soldiers who defended their village and region on 16 April
League Executive Member Roulla Saisanas said it was a privilege for the League to be able to honour these brave men who came to the region from so far away
“Agios Dimitrios is very proud of its role in fighting for Greece’s freedom in the Second World War
Our local community is keen to help to commemorate these Allied soldiers who fought there in April 1941,” she said
Ms Saisanas said that the League was proud of its Hellenic heritage and its connection to the Anzac story

“This is the 80th anniversary of the Greek campaign and we should not forget those who fought for our freedom in 1941 and throughout the war
Most of the veterans who fought there have now left us but we can keep their memory alive with this new memorial plaque,” she added
The new memorial plaque will honour the New Zealand soldiers who fought at Agios Dimitrios in April 1941 and the local villagers who supported them
The historical content of plaque wording will be researched by myself
The plaque will be similar in size and design to other Anzac Heritage Trail plaques already erected – on Lemnos
at Pylos and Methone – and others planned to be installed across Greece in coming months – on Lemnos
This is being organized by a group of Greek community organizations and veteran’s families
“Our League is proud to be able to join with other Greek community organizations in building the Anzac Heritage Trail across Greece
It will ensure that Agios Dimitrios will take its proper place on the Trail and assist commemorative visitors to come to the village and learn of its part in the Greek campaign,” Ms Saisanas added
Ms Saisanas said that the League would soon begin discussions with local authorities for the creation and installation of the new memorial plaque in the village

the memory of Saint Dimitrios the Myrrh-streamer and Great Martyr was celebrated in the Archdiocesan District of Northcote of Victoria
with the focus of the celebrations held at the Holy Church of Saint Dimitrios in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds
representing Archbishop Makarios of Australia
officiated during the Festive Hierarchical Vespers
while on the main day of the Feast His Grace presided over the Divine Liturgy
joined by many clergy of the Archdiocesan District of Northcote
The hymns of the Holy Services were wonderfully sung by a choir of teachers and students of the School of Byzantine Music
the Troparion of Saint Dimitrios was sung by students of the Greek school of the Parish who moved the congregation and received warm applause
after conveying to the faithful the paternal wishes of Archbishop Makarios of Australia
referred to the life of Saint Dimitrios the Great Martyr and made a special mention
when called upon to duel with the formidable gladiator Lyaeus
visited the Saint in prison to consult him and obtain his blessing
so that for every critical decision in their lives they should consult their elders on the one hand and ask for the blessing of the Church on the other
“The advice and the blessing of the Church means a positive result
added Bishop Evmenios of Kerasounta in closing
Good Friday and the night of Holy Saturday are one of the most significant and beautiful moments of Greek Orthodox Easter
especially at midnight when the priest chants “Christos Anesti” (Christ has risen) and the holy light is passed through the crowd
Although there are some magnificent Easter destinations around the country
and a lot of Athenians return to their villages or native towns to celebrate this major holiday with family
the capital itself can offer excellent Easter experiences
Here we select five of the most beautiful churches in Athens where you can celebrate the liturgy of Good Friday and Anastasi on Holy Saturday
Anastasi with a spectacular view of the capital at the top of Lycabettus Ηill is definitely a memorable experience
whitewashed Agios Georgios gleams in the candlelight at midnight
The walk or drive down is awesome as you can see the fireworks going off around the city and the Acropolis swathed in golden light
Agios Dyionissios Areopagitis on Skoufa 34
is by far the most cosmopolitan place to celebrate the Anastasi in Athens
It is the favourite choice for many of the cities most prestigious personalities
from entrepreneurs and politicians to actors
The church was decorated by famous Greek artists (such as Spiros Vassileiou) and icon-painters
This is a great so to head to dinner after mass as there are so many good restaurants nearby
Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris in Filoppapou
Surrounded by trees and greenery and standing on sacred ancient grounds
close to the Pnyx Hill and Hill of the Nymphs at the foot of verdant Filopappou Hill
this 16th Century church is certainly unique
made in 1732 and depicting him riding his horse
was designed by architect Dimitris Pikionis in 1955
Legend has it that during the Ottoman occupation
Turkish Army Officer Yusuf ordered for the church to be bombed by a cannon launched from the Acropolis
but that just moments before the cannon was launched
lightning struck and a thunderstorm broke out
causing an explosion at the Ottoman barracks and saving the church
From here you can walk down to Thisseio or up to Makriyianni for dinner
Literally a stone’s throw from the foot of the Athens Acropolis
this church was built in 1926 on a sacred ancient place where classical mosaics
a statue of the goddess Athena and other finds were unearthed
The Anastasi liturgy is particularly magical and tranquil here – under the dimly-lit Parthenon
on the quiet pedestrian Dyionissiou Aeropagitou street
The Byzantine “sunken” church of Panagia Kapnikarea graces the middle of pedestrian Ermou street
This 11th Century church is one of the oldest in Athens
and apart from its singular ambiance and beautiful wall paintings by iconographer Fotis Kondoglou
is one of the loveliest places to experience the Anastasi
as it is literally in the heart of the city
There are endless choices for places to visit nearby after the midnight service

the largest island of the Saronic Gulf is of great archaeological
Salamina is the largest island of the Saronic Gulf and the one closest to Attica
In summer it welcomes a large number of visitors
Salamina should not be considered only a summer destination· Attica as we all know is a safe attractive and multifaceted destination that offers unforgettable experiences throughout the year
be sure to include the following stops in your itinerary to learn all about the island
The building that today houses the Archaeological Museum of Salamina was completed in 1831 under the first head of state of independent Greece
as part of the construction of ten schools based on peer learning education
The collections include finds mainly from the island of Salamina and more specifically from Ampelakia
It mainly consists of ceramic and sculptural objects
while it also hosts a collection of funerary and votive gifts from the prehistoric period to late antiquity
Daily from 08:30 to 15:30, except Tuesday, Polyhroni Lebesi 42, Salamina, +30 210 4640759, odysseus.culture.gr
The first church of Agios Dimitrios was built in 1695 and over the years it has undergone various modifications
a new church was built in the style of an arched basilica with a dome
which was extended in 1874 and until 1935 was the Metropolis of the island
Inside you can see the works of the famous sculptor Yannis Halepas
while the altarpiece and the icons of the archangels Michael and Gabriel were created by painter Polyhronis Lebesis of the “Munich School”
The church is also associated with the Greek War of Independence in 1821
Karaiskakis was wounded at Faliro and asked to be taken to Agios Dimitrios of Salamis
his health deteriorated and he asked to be buried in Agios Dimitrios
part of his remains were transferred to Faliro to be placed in a monument along with the bones of his fellow soldiers
The first steps for the preservation of the island’s folk history and memory were taken in 1958 by the “Euripides” association
This collection is exhibited in two rooms of the New Town Hall – Cultural Centre
Of particular interest is the large collection of local costumes
which bears witness to the costume code of the period
Apart from objects of folk art and everyday use
ship’s harnesses and steering wheels that mark the great maritime tradition of the island
as well as weapons of the Greek War of Independence
Also included are exhibits from the post-Byzantine period
rare documents of the 18th and 19th centuries
The cave of Euripides is located in the area of Peristeria on the south side of Salamina at an altitude of 115 meters and was discovered relatively recently
which has a narrow entrance and features ten chambers with low ceilings
narrow corridors and natural niches and recesses
the cave seems to have been used from the Neolithic period until the Frankish period
Near the cave there was a cult temple dedicated to the Greek god Dionysus
According to ancient testimonies and findings
Dionysus and Euripides were worshipped in the same cave
The cave is not an organized archaeological site
You can see the cave from the outside and admire the view of the Saronic Gulf
The findings from the cave are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Salamina
The poet Angelos Sikelianos spent much of his life at his home in Salamina
He first came to the island sometime in 1930 to visit a friend and fellow poet
Sikelianos met the monk Ambrosios at the monastery of Faneromeni
ceded him the old boathouse of the monastery
Today the poet’s house exhibits his wife Anna’s loom and a woven dress
books and Sikelianos’ letters to his friends from Salamis
Salamina is full of sites of archaeological interest
but all of them testify to the island’s historical past and its great importance
The ancient city of Salamis is located in the current settlement of Ambelakia
parts of the city wall and a tower of the wall
the sanctuaries of Hermus and parts of the harbour
in the bay of which the battle of Salamis took place
while in Kolones a circular burial monument consisting of four tombs of the 4th century BC has been discovered
The proximity of Salamis to Athens and the port of Piraeus allowed it to prosper along with the city of Athens under Pericles
It was a trading station for the exchange of goods and the place of construction of the triremes of the Athenian fleet
while in the 4th century BC it even minted its own currency
A few weeks ago we found ourselves in Trikala and Kalambaka
locals are not complacent and everyone is trying for the better
At every step you hear an idea; many of them have already been implemented
we visited the pioneers of each of them and introduce them to you
Efrosino is located in the shadow of Meteora and Mrs Eleni is the soul of the restaurant
and everyone who works there does their best
is in charge of the day-to-day running of the business
everyone was talking about the amazing pies prepared by Mrs
“Let’s make a pie” she says and invites us to join in the process
“Come by in an hour to try it,” she tells us
Despite the fact that Efrosino lies in the heart of tourist traffic
it manages to maintain its character; aesthetically unaltered
because Mrs Eleni puts everything into perspective
Mr Panagiotis is responsible for the grill
here we can try oven-roasted braised meatballs
Mrs Eleni’s food will always come out a winner
They are young and sparkling with creativity; they are not complacent and prove that teams are invincible
Giorgos and Themis Tzelis at the brand new Mirtilo in Trikala
a characterful and fun place that serves steaming
delicious sandwiches and many more brunch options
modern and bright space next to Amberg Square – opened a few weeks ago- offering something different
The square owes its name to the Bavarian town of the same name in Germany
with which Trikala has a twinning agreement
Mirtilo serves crispy pork pancetta burger
it is called il cucinotto and brings with it the authentic Italian aperitivo experience
Enzo Bertocco – the restaurant’s owner- has been living in Trikala for three years now
We found the restaurant somewhat accidentally
illuminated two-storey neoclassical building
The building is entered sideways through the courtyard
an ideal spot to try genuine Italian cocktails based on Italian spirits prepared by the bar manager
We accompanied our drinks with one of the authentic Neapolitan pizzas prepared by Silvio
a Neapolitan pizzaiolo who prepares the pizza dough daily based on the authentic Neapolitan recipe
with fresh ingredients and baked in the traditional
authentic Neapolitan wood-fired oven “Zenarino”
Giorgio and his team prepare daily handmade fresh pasta with the traditional Italian recipe and all the sauces
meats sourced from specific and reliable micro-producers of the province
many of the ingredients come straight from Italy
we take a stroll around the rest of the premises
The Boulogiorgos confectionery makes the most delicious halva Farsalon (traditional dessert originating from Farsala
melted clarified butter and toasted almonds) in Trikala
after telling us about the 42-year history of the business and the contribution of his father Ioannis
showed us how they make this unique halva that is talked about all over the city
grew up in the workshop where he learned the best way to make their sweets next to his father and then attended classes at a pastry school in Thessaloniki
He adds water and sugar to the copper pot and as the temperature rises
continues to stir and the mixture begins to thicken
as it blends with the butter and takes on that ruby red colour
We leave the workshop and the aromas do not fade; a warm piece of halva is waiting for us to taste it
making mouth-watering syrupy deserts such as baklava
Stratigou Sarafi & Amalias (Opposite the main square of Trikala)
which is surrounded by rocks similar to those of Meteora
Mrs Voula and Mr Stefanos have already lit the wood-fired oven
We’d heard a lot about this village and about the plans to create in the near future an adventure park in the surrounding rocks
as well as a 7 km trail that will lead to the settlement of Gavros
One thing led to another and so we found ourselves in the kitchen of Arados restaurant watching the pie making process
the dough is divided into ball-shaped pieces
so that each of them can be used to make a sheet of dough
The dough is allowed to rest for some time and then a delicate stick is used to roll out the dough; the sheets of dough are rolled out so thin that they appear almost transparent
and then they are placed one by one on the baking tray
which has been prepared with the valuable help of Mrs Stella
a special tasty green that grows in the area
Mr Stefanos has already lit the fire and is roasting the shop’s famous ribs
meats and hot pies are already on the table
The experience at Arados was unique and delightful at the same time
Gousios is a very famous chop house across Thessaly and beyond
They have their own stable with a rare Greek breed of lambs
It is worth noting that in all of Greece there are only 5,500 animals of this breed with the University of Crete doing special research on these animals
which take about 3 months to grow to 10 kilos and can survive even in conditions with 30-40 inches of snow
Their meat is very special and stands out from other lambs’
We arrived in Gousios on a Thursday afternoon
A huge fire was humming in the fireplace and another by the grill
The table was set and apart from everything else I can’t help but mention first of all the lamb chops and sausages they produce
curing in the cold air in the butcher’s area next to the tavern
spetsofai (spicy Greek sausages with peppers and tomato sauce) and probably some of the most delicious fries we have ever tasted
Almost twenty years have passed since Apostolos Skabardonis decided and implemented his idea to deal with the production of traditional Trikala sausages
We met him at his company’s premises in Filyra
Trikala and he talked to us about his vision and his need to strengthen local products so that they can come out of anonymity
Among the main products produced by the company
which have won international quality awards
the Karamanlidika based on the classic recipe that revives memories of the Karamanlidika products of the Greeks of Cappadocia
the oregano sausages and the chicken meat sausages
Filyra, Trikala, +30 24340 22389, www.authentictrikalon.com
the Liakos family decided to plant their first small vineyard
aiming to produce quality wines based on the characteristics of the region’s microclimate
who is 23 years old and shared with us his great love for wine
He has studied agribusiness and food business management and has also completed the WSPC
which is one of the most demanding courses in the wine industry
The microclimate of the region is a catalyst for the creation of unique wines for the Greek region
Low yields per acre and careful harvesting of the grapes ensure the best possible quality
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 470 metres on sloping
Vasilis Liakos gave us a tour of the winery and also talked to us about the combination of tourism and wine
the visitor can taste the wines of the estate
the varieties and about the region in general and its relationship with wine
The Greek cuisine at its best with delicious homemade food
meat “cooked-to-order” and fresh fish and seafood: After countless tastings
we created a list with all the taverns in the southern suburbs of Athens that have preserved their original character and are truly worth going out of the usual tourist ways to discover
with its covered courtyard and rustic interior
They specialize in juicy grilled meat cooked-to-order
which tend to steal the show as they are presented forming a mountain
Paired excellently with saganaki (fried cheese)
but make sure to reserve some space in your stomach for the final treat
loukoumades (fried dough) with honey and cinnamon
Babis has been a destination for foodies for many decades; the tavern is famous for its juicy burgers
its regular customers show a particular preference to its well-cooked fish
it has fast service and a modest environment
It opened in the early 1990s in a restored mansion built in 1927
It has an inner courtyard filled with flowers
but in the summer most people prefer the outdoor courtyard
the perfectly cooked pork tenderloin and the mini cheese pies
they will treat you to loukoumades and semolina halva
A beautiful neighborhood tavern in Palaio Faliro
veal liver and juicy burgers with freshly fried potatoes on the side
The impeccable and polite service is another plus
One of the best taverns in Athens to eat meat
It is a regular destination for juicy kontosouvli (spit roasted meat)
We recommended making a reservation if you want to go on the weekend or on Friday night
Do not forget to try the pastirma mini pies
Η δημοσίευση κοινοποιήθηκε από το χρήστη Μπαρμπαμητσος-Λαδοκολλα (@barbamitsos_ladokolla)
An old-school neighborhood tavern that has maintained its regular customers for over thirty years
Relatively small and decorated with photographs and murals reminiscent of the era of ‘rebetiko’
this tavern almost always has a full house
There are three options to choose from: burger
The only exception to this logic of simplicity is that the food is served with french fries and that you can accompany it with spicy cheese dip
Barba Mitsos-Ladokolla: 11 Ioustinianou St.
Lightly roasted on the outside and juicy on the inside
because she wanted to take care of a beloved customer
They have remained the tavern’s specialty ever since
do not hesitate to order the ribs and steak
Η δημοσίευση κοινοποιήθηκε από το χρήστη Ο ΡΟΥΜΕΛΙΩΤΗΣ (@oroumeliotis)
Roumeliotis is famous for its gigantic rib steak
juicy kontosouvli and traditional kokoretsi (usually on Friday nights and weekends)
as well as its fries with fried eggs and red spicy homemade cheese dip
you will always be treated to orange cake and ice cream
but still reminiscent of a traditional tavern
Drami serves dishes inspired by the cuisine of different Greek regions
Try sharing the appetizers and make sure to order the homemade meatballs or the aromatic zucchini balls
grilled mushrooms and the chicken stir-fry
and it grew in size as it quickly gained loyal customers
It has managed to preserve its original identity over time
it is a classic destination for kontosouvli
The lamb on the spit is also worth ordering
one of the most famous Athens districts for meat lovers at the time
and since then it has remained open all year round
The meat has Greek origin and they use fresh charcoal every day for grilling
They are well-known for their traditional kokoretsi
named after the owner’s brother who was an Evzonas or Tsolias (military rank in the Greek army)
It has built a good reputation and loyal clientele thanks to its steaks (especially the “stable” steak)
sausages and its well-done lamb on the spit
The service is impeccable even during rush hour
Ursula Andress and Brigitte Bardot have all dined here in the past
Time stopped at this tavern at some unspecified moment thirty years ago
The tavern opened in 1983 and was named after the region where shepherds used to rest with their flocks before going to the mountains
The honeyed lamb in the hull accompanied by potatoes with lemon
the spicy tzatziki and the well-balanced kokoretsi are some of the menu items that stand out
The first thing to make impression after you take a seat at the tavern’s blue tables is that they serve fresh scallops
it is an Italian trattoria disguised as a Greek fish tavern that
This fish tavern has hosted great Greek musicians and artists
who fell in love with its simplicity and delicious dishes
Fresh fish is carefully cooked on the grill or in the pan
while the Platamonas shrimps are to die for
It is a must to order the caramelized octopus with black-eyed beans and cherry tomatoes
the homemade taramosalata (fish roe dip) and the delicious fish soup
with a tradition in serving good fish since 1950
and it insists on a small but delicious menu
After trying the fresh fish from the Cyclades and the fried shrimp from Platamonas
they will treat you to homemade halva and traditional Greek spoon sweet
which stands out for its fresh fish and delicious seafood
It is a six-minute drive from the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio
on your way back to Athens after visiting the Temple
make a stop in Legraina and you will not regret it
A post shared by Ιωλκός – Iolkos (@iolkos.seafood)
In this elegant fish tavern that opened in 2013 in a “hidden” neighborhood of Glyfada
you will find seafood and fish from Ikaria and Lemnos
It combines the culture of the Greek “tsipouradiko” with the quality of a gourmet restaurant
fresh sea urchin dishes as well as scallops
which are paired incredibly with their homemade dips
while enjoying Greek ouzo and tsipouro found here in abundance
Another great choice on the way back from the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio to Athens
Located in the same spot since 1947 on the seaside
the environment is that of a traditional fish tavern
with really good fish and a wonderful view out to sea
It is also known for its remarkable shrimp pasta
Ta Kalamia: 39th km Athinon – Souniou Avenue

Four minutes away from Stamatis and eight in total from the archeological site of Sounio
in “Theodoros & Eleni” you will find the most delicious mussels of Attica
bathed in a velvety feta and oregano sauce or with garlic and wine
Just one tip: Be ready to get your hands dirty
ouzo and other seafood delicacies that will catch your eye on the menu
Ramona has been open for decades and it is loved by its many loyal customers
especially beef stew with pasta or french fries
but what catches the eye are the large wine barrels “dressed” in vine leaves
as well as the black and white photos of the city on the walls
a formidable cook with experience of over 30 years
opened Palia Fava in 2005 in one of the narrow alleys of Palaio Faliro
This tavern is characterized by its retro look and it focuses on traditional Greek cuisine
such as soutzoukakia (a type of meatballs)
bean and other soups are definitely worth trying
and before you leave they will treat you to dessert
prepared with the available seasonal ingredients
Here you will find a wide variety of casserole dishes
while the tavern is also known for its veal steak and grilled chicken burger
and there is a spit for kontosouvli and kokoretsi in the weekends
they will treat you to loukoumades and homemade ravani (sweet semolina cake)
This is the place to taste authentic Greek dishes
balanced and delicious food prepared with authentic local products
Here you will indulge in a proper choriatiki salad (traditional Greek salad)
wonderfully-fragrant cucumber and feta cheese with a full flavor
The appetizers are also traditional Greek dishes
all of which are prepared with extra-fresh ingredients
a traditional recipe with orzo and pieces of meat
this is where the restaurant’s name comes from
wherever it is called and wherever possible

its tavernas have maintained their authenticity
The island’s locals are renowned for going about things at a slow

The local food on offer is one of the many factors luring people
as well as vegetables picked from village gardens in the hinterland
all contribute to the island’s overall quality
while most of the island’s tavernas serve well-prepared dishes at fair prices
a tiny restaurant that can go by unnoticed in Agios Kyrikos
typically describe it as the best they’ve ever had
Also try the oven spaghetti and chef’s salad
This is a top spot for fresh fish and seafood
as well as soft octopus and delicious prawn spaghetti are all served here
Also try the eggplant salad and grilled calamari
The taverna is situated close to Nas beach and is terrific to visit for sunset
Situated at a charming cobbled square with trees at the village Agios Dimitrios
the restaurant Sto Kabi is a hangout for locals who like their food
kept local to the greatest possible degree
a type of Greek rustic pasta) with chicken and mushrooms is one of the eatery’s most popular dishes
