So. My first Greek Easter was a shock. A wonderful shock.  Friday night: following the beautifully decorated Epitaphios all around town, the atmosphere solemn, the town band playing their mournful melodies.  Sunday: Even after a very late night, church again early and then meeting friends to celebrate and overindulge (not with chocolate). Everything about those few days (the mood, the atmosphere that goes from one of mourning to celebration, the rituals of abstention followed by indulgence) astonish and move me – and so very different from the chocolate-fest of England. The contrast between solemn moments inside church and a few moments later being part of a huge noisy gathering by the lake is unlike anything I have experienced. Unique and wonderful.  Victoria Hislop is a British author and novelist known for her works primarily set in Greece. has long been a crossroads of people and cultures.” The incredible history here has been shaped by millennia of civilizations—from the ancient Minoans to the Venetians Passarivaki says “you constantly forget that you are on an island,” adding that because you can find snow on many of its peaks (especially the White Mountains on the west) Crete is an all-year destination that can be just as thrilling during the year’s colder months the island is considered not only Greece’s breadbasket but its culinary legacy is often dubbed the quintessential Mediterranean diet And winemaking here is in the throes of a renaissance; like much of the Mediterranean wine has existed on Crete for thousands of years But a phylloxera outbreak in the 1970s all but wiped out the island’s vineyards Many farmers abandoned winemaking altogether in favor of other agricultural pursuits but thankfully the last decade has seen a revival of Cretan viticulture According to SteMa’s other founder Stefanos Gogos “As one of the most important wine-producing regions Crete is playing an increasingly important role in the new era of Greek wine So if you like interspersing sugar-white beaches with archaeological sites and wine tastings very few islands in the world will rival what Crete has to offer All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors If you Chania have one of the island’s two major airports This variety of experiences makes it the perfect launchpad for the rest of the island but it can also be the focus of a more focused itinerary While he does everything from paintings to photography you’re really there for the striking collection of timeless ceramics Attention, beach lovers: The commute to Elafonisi Beach’s pink sands is no joke It’s a 90-minute drive southwest of the Old Town but the powdery beach and the crystal clear waters justify the excursion Equally pristine Balos Beach is another bucket-list destination but you may need to ferry there from Kissamos port a beach that requires a scrappy hike down to the bluest of waters a bunch of adorable goats are known to pick through bathers’ beach bags a husband-and-wife operation that focuses on western Crete’s less tourist-y southern coast and if you’d rather simplify that beach trip to Balos they can get you there and even add a stop on uninhabited Gramvousa island Molavi serves a farmer-fresh menu of Mediterranean faves: taramosalata drizzled with bottarga and octopus carpaccio a 20-room member of Design Hotels with a much more minimalist aesthetic the hotel delivers a serene stay thanks to its off-the-beaten location plus a sleek spa with an equally Instagrammable gym Village Heights Resort offers villa rentals in an amenity-full property and a spa—all just 25 minutes away from the city and maybe less alluring than the rest of the island But there are perks to staying in this port city Not only does it have the larger airport but it’s also much closer to the geographic center of the island making the rest of Crete much more accessible where you can get lost marveling at treasures of antiquity from Snake Goddess figurines from 1,600 BC to the famous bull's head rhyton SteMa Journeys can also curate a deep dive into the island’s ancient heritage that includes visits to less known archaeological sites you can tour the Minoan Palace of Phaistos as well as Gortys a village an hour from Heraklion that’s known for its pottery And if you want to pick up a unique souvenir, make an appointment at Studio Paradissi where artist Eleni Psyllaki dreams up the most striking posters inspired by Cretan culture and history Where to eat and drink: “Heraklion region boasts a wine making tradition that dates back centuries,” says Passarivaki “Scattered among the vines remain a few small household wineries still reminiscent of those times.” which operates a few wineries all over Greece And the state-of-the-art tasting room overlooking lush vineyards is just 15 minutes from the city with its bright patio and a kitchen churning out Cretan classics like potato with salted cod and snails cooked in vinegar a one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Heraklion which has a sweet garden equipped with a grill is less than a 15-minute walk to the archaeological museum Rethymnon sits smack in the middle of tourist hubs Heraklion and Chania Most travelers to Crete might split their time between Heraklion and Chania but smack in the middle is historic Rethymnon (or Rethymno) The walkable Old Town packs in great restaurants and colorful shops You’ll be rewarded if you take time to explore beyond the city: Like many parts of Crete there’s a great mix of farmland and natural beauty in the region and fountains from the 16th and 17th century when it was all part of Venice Case in point: the Rimondi Venetian Fountain—a beautifully preserved relic from that time period along with the imposing fortress and the port but even just strolling around the alleyways admiring the archways and grand mansions while slipping in and out of souvenir shops offers a great sense of place Rethymno is the most charming old city in Crete a city that does not fall into winter lethargy but remains alive even outside the tourist season.” You can start venturing away from the Old Town by enjoying as much of the seven-and-a-half-mile beach that stretches from Rethymno to Skaleta The southern side of Rethymno—about 30 minutes from the Old Town—has plenty of fantastic beaches too: Preveli is considered one of the most stunning thanks to the sandy beach and crystal-clear water Gogos recommends the untouched beaches in Agia Fotini “You can see a fisherman pull his catch from the waters and take it straight to the kitchen,” he says Where to eat and drink: You’ll definitely want to make a reservation for a meal at Avli; for decades it’s been one of the best restaurants across the island The courtyard of this Venetian villa with its mix-and-match furniture is an atmospheric spot for a lunch or dinner of classic Cretan fare from crispy cheese rolls to grilled lobster served with tomato-loaded orzo And in the mountains between Chania and Rethymno seek out the modest taverna from Nektarios Tsitsiridis in Amoudari village near Askifou Located on a plateau over 2,200 feet in altitude the vibe here will transport you to an entirely different side of Crete Tsitsiridis’ expertise regarding the island’s heartier mountain fare shows up on the Gardoumbakia a selection of lamb and goat offals stewed with zucchini and potatoes or in the okra in tomato sauce is a stylish two-bedroom apartment that puts you right in the heart of town 47-room Phāea Blue’s intimate footprint gives way to surprising delights The on-site beach offers charming caïque (rowboat) that takes guests all over the island Crete’s easternmost region is generally not as crowded as the rest of the island Pockets like Elounda have been booming with tourism interest recently but the eastern reaches of the island is better known for its untouched natural beauty “but also fishermen in colorful caïques whisking sun worshippers to far-flung beaches and black robed grannies wandering around traditional hamlets,” Gogos explains “It is this combination of glamor and unpolished beauty that makes Lasithi stand out.” What to do: Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are two small coastal towns that have since become tourism darlings in the area This is where you’ll find the beach bars and the more popular resorts They are typically the busiest pockets of eastern Crete but as the island’s stock continues to rise among travelers many other areas are starting to land on tourism radars which is flanked by the sea on one side and a lush palm forest on the other take a day trip or two to a few gorgeous islands You come for the blue bay waters and isolated beaches but you stay for the eye-popping history: This was once a leper colony up until about a 100 years ago you can also sail from Ierapetra to the uninhabited Greek island of Chrissi a protected nature reserve where you may spot lizards and other wildlife as you sunbathe on its pure sand beaches and pretty waterfalls will do their best to keep your heart rate even And Passarivaki adds that the available menu is so seasonal you could be tucking into Or it is, at least, for me. Life gets busy, and while weekend breaks are plentiful and cherished my mum and my sister vowed to go away together before December was out: somewhere hot you can land into one of two airports: Heraklion or Chania Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort is located less than an hours' drive away from the former on the North-Eastern side of the island and just outside of the beautiful seaside town of Agios Nikolaos despite our late landing – and the chaotic nature of Heraklion's small luggage hall – our transfer was speedy and seamless After picking up our all-inclusive wristbands we were taken by golf buggy – over the bridge which joins the hotels' two parts – five minutes up the hill We drove past countless other bungalows and suites which were scattered across the cliffside and while the uphill scramble gave me some idea of the size of the resort it wasn't until I woke up the next morning that I realised quite how sprawling it is The view across the bungalows with private pools Our room was split over two levels: on the ground floor, a bedroom, dressing room and bathroom, and on the top floor, a slightly-larger repeat – plus a terrace with a sea view. It was the perfect-sized room for a mother-daughter trip. My mum made herself at home on the ground floor, while my sister and I shared the upstairs master bedroom Both spaces were designed around a palette of creams complete with rattan furniture and more sparkling marble I couldn't fault the design or cleanliness Terrace space at Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort I woke up to a half-eaten plate of snacks which the hotel team had very kindly put out for us the night before (half-eaten by myself and stumbled out onto the sun-drenched terrace The resort spans almost the entirety of Mirabello Bay it's worth noting that each of the two sides of the resort feel quite different The side which I was overlooking – that which hugged the shore and housed the resort's infinity pool main hotel block and several restaurants – is lively with a tendency to get a little noisy in the evening the village side – comprised of more pools stone-built rooms like ours and the newly-opened water park – was much more subdued I was pleased to be able to dip in and out of the buzz we ventured over the road and away from the village to the main heart of the hotel a busier-than-preferred affair – I'd recommend avoiding the 9am rush if you're to steer clear of the hungry children – but the food was a total treat and we quickly got into a routine each day fresh bread and continental options – plus an omelette bar and station for drinks everything was restocked readily and piping hot It's the same Amalthea buffet restaurant which serves an international buffet for lunch and dinner every evening While there is a selection of other restaurants on-site at the resort you have to book in advance for a feeling of exclusivity so it's nice to have a more relaxed option to fall back on We ate our evening meal at the Amalthea buffet restaurant multiple times over the course of the week and I never ate the same thing twice I particularly loved the offering of traditional Greek options Top tip: get there early to bag a rare-but-special table on the terrace and eat while you watch the sun go down Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort private beaches and water sports centre from above hidden in a quiet spot down the hill from the main Amalthea buffet and with exceptional service We had two dinners at Kafenion since we loved it so much and enjoyed walking five minutes up the cliff to the local church to watch sunset afterwards It was so peaceful and the perfect way to work off all the lamb and potatoes I had tucked into It was one of my favourite experiences of the entire week Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort's Kafenion restaurant The cliff-top church which can be reached directly from the hotel because we were totally spoiled with wonderful things to do over the duration of our stay you could spend the entirety of your holiday on a sun-lounger but when there are local villages to explore wine tastings to take part in and water sports to rinse We spent three hours there and each made fragrances which we've been wearing ever since Bioaroma Natural Products - the destination for our perfume-making class If you fancy venturing a little bit further also best visited during the evening is Kritsa – a quiet and traditional village set around 30 minutes in-land which was recommended to us by the owner of Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort's on-site shop It's such a gorgeous and off-the-beaten-track place to wander around with a plethora of gift shops and ice cream parlours to break at While we headed back to the hotel to eat dinner there seemed to be plenty of restaurants to choose from to elongate the night A must-visit for any length of stay at Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from If you don't want to leave the hotel but still want to keep yourself entertained I'd recommend splashing (apologies) your entire holiday budget at the water sports centre Though water sports are at an extra cost (as expected) bookings aren't needed: you simply approach the friendly team and take your pick from kayaking We went out on a sofa boat which was a tad terrifying and took a speed-boat ride around the local island of Spinalonga (Famed for being a leper colony in the early 20th century) This was so fun – I spent at least an hour jumping from the boat into the sea and climbing back up again – and loved whizzing past the local coves caves and towns that we otherwise wouldn't have spotted an open-air gym (not as hot as you'd assume not as ridden with children as you might expect – even my mum tried her hand at the water chute We had the dreamiest of weeks at Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort While some details slipped – we had a tricky time getting herbal tea delivered to our bedroom and didn't get bottled water regularly restocked – they weren't deal breakers all-inclusive trip with my sister or a friend – where everything you need is on your doorstep – I'd book Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort again in a heartbeat The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos accepted the donation of Authorities have released the names of the five family members who perished in a devastating house fire in Limassol early Saturday morning as investigations continue into what sparked the deadly blaze The victims have been identified as Bassem Adeeb Gamil Takla The family was found lifeless inside their second-floor residence in the Agios Nikolaos area after firefighters battled the intense flames A post-mortem examination confirmed that all five died from soot inhalation Further toxicology and lab tests are underway to determine the exact cause of death The fire department has traced the origin of the fire to the home’s kitchen and small living room area Investigators are examining whether an electrical fault continues to sift through the charred remains of the property in search of answers Neighbors told authorities they woke to the smell of smoke and the sound of sirens but were unable to assist as flames rapidly engulfed the upper floor of the house “This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” one local resident said Authorities have yet to confirm whether the family was awake at the time of the fire or if they were overcome by smoke while sleeping officials urge the public to ensure smoke alarms are functioning in their homes and to be cautious with heating appliances A funeral for the family is expected to take place in the coming days Something of a war has broken out in the Church of Greece after an Athens priest enlisted the help of two girls from his congregation to fill in for the altar boys in the Pentecostal liturgy The controversial incident took place at the Church of Agios Nikolaos Rangavas in downtown Plaka on Monday and soon made the rounds on social media after a parishioner posted a photograph of the 14-year-old twins dressed in the altar boys’ robes and holding candles The photograph prompted an immediate reaction mainly from religious and ecclesiastical circles that saw the initiative as an affront to Christian Orthodox traditions and a herald of more “alarming” developments to come Some even went as far as to surmise that it was a hint at intentions to allow women into the clergy was suspended from service “until further notice,” with circles in the Archbishopric saying that the matter is of a theological nature and not open to public discussion The Byzantine church in Plaka is especially popular among younger parishioners thanks in part to the personality of Father Alexandros studies abroad and secondary teaching experience he strives to share the notion of faith as a way of viewing life Indicative of his philosophy is the fact that the Acts of the Apostles is read in Modern Greek after the Ancient so that everyone in the congregation understands its messages ‘Those carrying out this indecent attack treat women as a detested symbol’ the congregation was very small and the boys who usually help the priest were away,” Dr Thanos Zisis a philologist and member of the Agios Nikolaos Rangavas Council Father Alexandros decided to allow the two sisters no blessing or permission is required from the bishop,” notes Zisis What makes the reactions to this decision even more surprising is that it is entirely common for girls to assume such duties in Greek Orthodox churches abroad (such as when the patriarch of Alexandria is conducting the service) boys and girls from the local Experimental High School helped in the Christmas Eve service at the Metropolitan Church of Hania and girls were also part of the Pentecostal liturgy at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in San Diego “The institution of deaconesses is part of the Greek Orthodox tradition but it has not been abolished,” adds Zisis “The Church’s last deaconess was ordained by the late archbishop Christodoulos in Volos She was preceded by Deaconess Maria in Korea in 1978 and by another ordained in 1910 by Saint Nektarios to the accusations against Father Alexandros been handed a punishment of equal severity to that imposed a few days ago against an archimandrite accused of molesting a minor,” he says Dr Zisis believes that the issue is very serious and has significant social dimensions “Those carrying out this indecent attack treat women as a detested symbol she is expected to ontologically perceive her existence She is meant to remain subordinate to men and be useful solely for the purpose of serving coffee and cookies.” He also believes the girls are being unfairly targeted “Such messaging cultivates a sense of guilt in the female gender from a young age,” says the educator fallen behind on pastoral matters,” Zisis comments adding that churchgoers and clerics should be more concerned about the shortage of young people at churches than about two girls holding candles On December 6 the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast Day of Agios Nikolaos Saint Nicholas was born about 275 AD in Myra His uncle was the bishop of the town and educated Nicholas for life in the Church Nicholas was ordained by his uncle and eventually succeeded him as Bishop the Christian Church in the Asia Minor city of Myra (now Demre He is beloved throughout the Christian East for his kindness and help He is called “Wonderworker” (or “Miraculous” or “Miracle-Worker” different translations of the Greek “thavmatourgos”) for the miracles which he performed and which he still performs This Saint lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great He made a pilgrimage to the holy city Jerusalem where he found a place to withdraw to devote himself to prayer but that he should return to his homeland to be a cause of salvation for many and delivering those who had been unjustly accused No less was he known for his zeal for the truth He was present at the First Ecumenical Council of the 318 Fathers at Nicaea in 325; upon hearing the blasphemies that Arius brazenly uttered against the Son of God Since the canons of the Church forbid the clergy to strike any man at all his fellow bishops were in perplexity what disciplinary action was to be taken against this hierarch whom all revered In the night our Lord Jesus Christ and our Lady Theotokos appeared to certain of the bishops informing them that no action was to be taken against him The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock … was written originally for Saint Nicholas and of sea-farers in particular sailors and the sea; he is one of the The EU will provide 50% of the funding. The world’s largest electric ferry – also an EU project, was went into service  in Denmark this past August.  All of the Greek ferry lines will be watching the pilot with great interest. Fuel prices have already been rising in Greece over the past two years and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) global sulphur cap  starts January 1 Estimates are the cost of lower sulphur fossil fuels could be as much as 20% higher with consumer ticket prices going up 7-10% of course is one of the world’s great maritime nations but it has been slow to take up electric ferries in large part because many of the routes in the country are long overnight journeys to the islands that tax today’s electric-only capabilities The technology is literally changing by the day, though, and 2019 has seen a number of important milestones in switching ferries from fossil fuels to battery electric or hybrid. The largest capacity batteries for an electric ship – 6,100 kWh – were installed on an arctic cruise ship and are twice the size on any other boat.  Norway is definitely the leader in electric ferries, but the other Scandinavian countries are also making the switch, as well as Canada and the US. Baldwin Ho checks in for a luxury stay at this exclusive wellness retreat Being the largest and most populous Greek island Crete often perplexes tourists in terms of where they should be staying If you are looking for a wellness retreat that is adults only and has won countless luxury hospitality awards look no further than Minos Palace Hotel and Suites The hotel opened in 1981 and has been widely regarded as the best hotel in Crete but any cursory inspection of the hotel will not yield any 80s décor as this is an institution that constantly reinvents itself The Cretan design focuses on natural elements that are sourced locally bohemian candlelight holders and tasteful art pieces dotted throughout the reception area exuding a carefree island holiday vibe Set on a secluded peninsula with a divine infinity pool the hotel looks more for the social media age rather than from a bygone era you’re guaranteed to find stunning sea views If you start strolling through the carefully manicured garden lawns it is deceptively easy to get lost such is the size of their property but it will be a thoroughly soothing meander as you encounter their picturesque The only slight negative is if you want to head into town to Agios Nikolaos it is marginally further out compared to their sister hotel they are aiming to be a luxury wellness resort where guests don’t necessarily want hectic trips into town You suspect a Feng shui master might have consulted on the design of their 121 rooms and bungalows and 28 suites with private and shared pools Everything is effortlessly harmonised with the natural surroundings using local materials The colour palette is on the sophisticated grey olive wood spectrum giving a distinct sense of calm respite away from the Cretan afternoon heat Most of the rooms have been refurbished to a very high standard complete with USB sockets by the bedside and high-speed Wi-Fi even if you are out at your private pool there is a small number of rooms still waiting to be refurbished Sustainability is a key consideration for the hotel They offer shampoo and shower gel in readily bio-degradable pouches instead of the usual plastic bottles Double vanities are available to ensure marital bliss during your adults-only retreat Food is something embraced with a passion by Cretans Even at their ‘casual’ restaurant The showstopping dish is the prawns with ouzo which is cooked in front of guests on a heated stone with dry seaweed a popular staple in both their restaurants but if you walk around their gardens you’ll appreciate their garden-to-plate concept garnishes and the like are more than likely to have come from their expansive garden the buffet restaurant with a unique 360-degree sea view offers the best of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine and is included in the half board package You might see local dishes like fish with lemon verbena sauce and zucchini stuffed with mincemeat and rice this is not a restaurant where you’ll struggle to find options The eye-catcher is the hotel’s easy-on-the-eye saltwater infinity pool With sun-loungers and palm trees nestled a third of the way into the pool this is THE picture postcard perfect shot to make your friends and enemies green with envy The focus here is all about wellness so you can attend yoga and Pilates classes Cookery classes can be arranged where you can learn how to cook authentic Cretan cuisine and there are even eco-activities where you can go beach and coast cleaning The hotel currently has an ornate spa treatment area but there are big plans to knock down an accommodation complex to make way for a brand new spa treatment centre Do you want to visit a progressive adult-only wellness retreat Do you want to enjoy some Cretan winter sun Minos Palace Hotel and
