On the morning of Friday the 22nd of March/4th of April 2014
headed by Principal Mr Constantinos Pouis and under the musical guidance of Music Teacher Mrs Ioanna Angelou
The delegation from Alimos School was received by His Beatitude Theophilos
His Beatitude welcomed students to the Holy Land as angels of peace
since through music man is reconciled with God and his fellow men
peacemaking and cultural work of the Patriarchate in the Holy Land
before praising their initiative for veneration and music performance
His Beatitude also expressed interest in carrying on this initiative
by means of a collaboration between the choir and Patriarchal choirs
and also through students at the Alimos School wishing to study at the Patriarchate’s Hieratical School
the choir chanted the hymns “Christ Has Risen”
Holy Sion” and the Patriarchal Polychronism
His Beatitude offered teachers and students alike Hagiotaphite Jerusalemite eulogias and wished that they enjoy their pilgrimage tour and succeed in their school courses

a section of Poseidonos Avenue near Alimos in southern Athens flooded with rainwater and sewage
Officials blame illegal connections diverting rooftop and yard runoff into the sewer system
causing manhole covers to burst under pressure during heavy rain
This recurring issue also impacts Glyfada and Vouliagmeni
Alimos’ mayor decried inadequate infrastructure and cited EYDAP’s plans for a new sewer pipeline study by March
The water and sewerage utility claims about 7,000 illegal connections are the culprits and warns violations could result in water shutoffs
from UC San Diego and is now a data scientist and project leader at NASA's JPL
When he was 14 years old and a junior high school student in Iran in 2004
Ryan Alimo watched the twin Spirit and Opportunity NASA rovers land on Mars
The young Alimo was watching with his father and both were struck by how happy everyone looked at Mission Control
“I want to see you one day in that position,” Alimo’s father told him
“These people are the happiest people in the world right now.”
and Alimo got to watch the landing of the Perseverance rover on a private channel in a conference room at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena
“It was an emotional moment,” said Alimo
in computational science at the University of California San Diego in 2017
we were testing the rover outside my office
Between first watching the rovers in 2004 and being part of the team
Alimo transformed himself from a mediocre student to an astronomy expert his classmates called “The Martian.” He became one of the youngest students to win Iran’s national astronomy Olympiad competition in 2005
Alimo studied engineering as an undergraduate at Sharif University in Iran
focusing on numerical computation before joining UC San Diego in 2012
After his family emigrated to the United States in 2011
he contacted the program manager on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers and told him about his dream
the manager of the Mars missions and the director for solar system exploration
offered to give him a tour of the JPL campus and became his mentor
Alimo decided to pursue graduate school at UC San Diego
where he earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in the lab of Professor Alison Marsden
in the research group of Professor Thomas Bewley
This led him to a postdoc at the California Institute of Technology’s Center for Autonomous Systems and Technology (CAST) and finally a job as a data scientist and project leader at NASA’s JPL
Alimo views his experiences as a lesson in having a goal and sticking to it
“It shows the value and importance of having a vision,” he said
Alimo worked on both the Perseverance rover and the Ingenuity helicopter
Alimo’s team developed an AI system that finds data errors quickly and reliably
so Perseverance and Ingenuity can move faster
Data from Ingenuity follows a complex and multi-stage path: from the helicopter to the rover
to Deep Space Network (DSN) stations back on Earth
DSN stations consist of huge radio antennas located in California
Australia and Spain that receive data and send commands to the Mars rovers
Alimo designed optimization algorithms to automate and optimize the performance of complex and nonlinear systems
which were later used at NASA to automate and optimize data transmission for Mars
Ingenuity’s first flight was very much a Wright Brother moment—but on Mars
Technologists weren’t sure how well Ingenuity and Perseverance would work together
The fact that the mission came together during a pandemic
One explores how a swarm of multiple spacecraft can work together to perform complicated tasks
have thousands of small satellites work together to take a picture for an exoplanet
The other investigates how different classes of robots can work together to explore underground caves on other planets
“We have meetings where we talk about diving and driving on icy moons
or flying on Titan and Mars,” Alimo said
“We want to go to other planets.”
Alimo said he feels like NASA and JPL can realize these goals
“It’s good to dream big,” he said
We asked Alimo for advice for students considering graduate school and those who just finished their Ph.D
I had different offers to go to graduate school
because it looked like a good place to live for five years
Even though UC San Diego doesn’t have a strong space program
it brings together mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering
I first heard of Professor Marsden because I knew of her father’s contributions to space science
She was my academic mother and Professor Bewley was my academic father
How did you go about getting more experience in space research at UC San Diego
I was able to volunteer in the lab of Professor Allen Hargans at the School of Medicine
I sought out Professor Bewley because he has many connections with JPL and NASA
The world is changing and requires more skilled people
It’s different right now than it was a few decades ago
It’s not just for an academic career
It’s also something you can use in industry
I would advise them to pursue a study that is applicable to many fields
I had the option to enter different fields and collaborate with other industries including bioengineering
Also think outside of the box: you don’t need to be in a computer science department to study AI and machine learning
You can choose other departments where admissions are easier and collaborate with computer scientists
It’s important to pay attention to both of these things
Alimo with a model of the Ingenuity helicopter
what advice would you give to someone who just earned their Ph.D
You should think about what excites you the most
Think about something you could do for 80 hours per week
I also would stress that you need to establish connections to find your dream job
from hedge funds in the Midwest to self-driving car companies and semiconductor companies in the Bay Area
Interviewing at different places with different people enables you to understand how broad industry is and where exactly you can go
The job market these days is like taking a GRE or SAT exam: you should prepare
There are even some books for interview preparation that you can read
The most boring meetings that we have are about how we can go to the Moon
You are spending the majority of your life at work
which is supposed to be one of the best periods in your life
If you cannot find your dream job after graduation
I highly suggest going to a research lab or doing a very short postdoc after your Ph.D
This enables you to choose your path afterward whatever that may be
whether you want to go to academia or private industry
These days academic institutions want to get applicants who have had an industrial background
The advantage of research labs is that you get paid much more compared to a postdoc
I suggest you consider joining an early-stage startup or establishing your own business and follow your passion and dream
Have you ever encountered a piece of landscape art that felt like a place you’d been before? Something about the shape of the coastline and the hills, or the color of the water, feels familiar and connected to old memories? That’s a feeling you may have a lot when seeing the work of Alimo
Sean Kesterson is a West Coast artist whose minimalist
colorblocked creations are an ode to the ocean
the simple but striking imagery feels intimately personal to outdoor-lovers
Inspired by the coasts of the West and forests
Alimo’s artwork isn’t directly tied to a single place
although the influences of a popular California beach or a snowy mountain in Japan may feel right in the viewer’s mind
preserving and taking care of the seas that are both his playground and home is paramount
Alimo’s recent work and partnerships have been deeply rooted in sustainability
whether in supporting environmental causes or directly reevaluating how his own artist production can be made more sustainable
We recently caught up with Kesterson to learn more about the evolution of his distinct artistic style
and what’s next on the horizon for the nomadic nature lover
I'm Sean. I go by the artist name, Alimo
I was living in San Francisco [when COVID hit] but generally I'm a bit of a traveling nomad
It is hard to kind of get stuck to one spot
You just brain dump your imagination onto paper or whatever medium
is really kind of understanding the color theory and layouts and how to present stuff and really looking at it conceptually..
And then school taught me what design was and then post school
realizing that I needed to revert back to what really kept me moving and got that blood flowing
Sometimes we're really trying to bridge that to keep it fresh
The connection has been there since I was a kid
who taught me just about every board sport and sport there is out there
dragging me along whether I liked it or not
That really grew that love for doing everything outside
because when you're drawing and on the computer and you're painting
Nature is what keeps me alive and level headed
"How can I be a snowboarder loving the snow and surfer in the ocean and be okay seeing trash in the mountains and in the water?"
I really like the scenic scenes that I draw
You look at it and you don't know where it is
Once you can relate to it and you're like
I remember going to this spot on this coastline with my friends over the weekend." And so those types of empty spaces
And then other times when there's a full scene with people..
and it's like a spitting image of like what you did over the weekend with this crew
And so there's some history and then there's future dream landscapes that you can't wait to go to
I carry around my medium format camera just about everywhere I go—my Mamiya 6 or my Nikon S
There are tons of scenes that are just shot with my iPhone
And then I'll compose many different image pieces together to turn them into this kind of singular dreamscape
people will point out a painting that I have and they'll be like
The point is that it brings back this feeling that people have been somewhere before
or this relationship to people that they've had before
The process has always been quick sketches on paper
whether that be a napkin or the back of a business card or my actual sketchbook
And at different times I can look at it if I’m having any sort of writer's block
It’s just scribbles and most of the drawings are quick—they're not good—but i can see one line and it'll trigger something so I can go forward and start drawing that again
a lot of times I'll go in and scan certain lines or textures or different photos that I've taken
And then I'll blend together to create a new kind of composition
and then I'll play around with different color palettes
And then I'll revert that back onto canvas and I'll redraw it and really kind of pull in that analog form
It's taken me 15 years to figure out this technique
But that's kind of the secret sauce—it's both digital and analog
It's just using one tool for the next tool to give you the kind of solution that you've been looking for
I'd say all three of them would be with friends or my brother
surfing my brains out for the majority of the day
Second would be a splitboard in the backcountry
getting away from all the clutter and really earning those hippy turns
it's really just getting outside of my normal “Groundhog Day” routine
Maybe that's just walking across the street and looking at a different item to get some inspiration
or it is a few hour drive just to see something new
but these are some of my top picks for painting the outdoors
I accidentally fell into this dirty industry of cheap apparel and fast fashion
It started out as selling prints and paintings and then it turned into
why don't I put it on a shirt or hoodie
This is rad.” And then I realized that the quality was pretty awful
That's why I don't really have t-shirts or much apparel on my website right now
I want to feel good about what I'm selling because we're in this outdoor world. And like, how can I be a snowboarder loving the snow and surfer in the ocean and be okay seeing trash in the mountains and in the water? So, I partnered up with a company called SeaTrees
a nonprofit that helps creators and businesses fund projects and initiatives in sustainable ways
So every sweatshirt or T-shirt that I produce
we plant a mangrove tree out in Biak Island
I'll likely continue doing more small batch drops
Other different fundraising initiatives have been impactful
I did a big one to support wildfire relief in Australia last year
and then George Floyd raised a ton of money within a couple of days
I'm also coming out with a new puzzle here shortly, and then a new collaboration with Arvin Goods. Way stoked on that partnership. All-natural colors. No harmful chemicals. Zero water waste. Plus 10% of sales go to @Seatrees
Visit the Alimo webshop to check out his many prints, paintings, and fun accessories for sale, and find more work on Instagram at @alimofun

In the latest chapter of an ongoing dispute
the Municipality of Alimos in southern Athens has suspended around 40 building permits tied to height bonuses provided by the New Building Code
are now on hold pending a final decision by the Council of State
The controversy arose when the court declared these bonuses unconstitutional in December
the Environment Ministry issued legislation allowing already-issued permits to proceed
“We cannot allow construction to create irreversible outcomes before the ruling is published,” Kondylis said
adding that contractors had hurriedly initiated work to bypass legal roadblocks
The suspended permits highlight tensions between local authorities and national policies
The Environment Ministry’s intervention sought to limit municipal cancellations of permits issued before December 12
Kondylis insists that developers knowingly took risks
With approximately 14,000 New Building Code permits nationwide and only weeks until the final ruling
Burglars held a couple captive inside their home in Alimos
Three masked individuals broke into the house through the balcony door and subdued the couple inside
They remained in the home for nearly three hours
searching each room before fleeing with a stash of valuable jewelry
Police have launched an investigation and are analyzing surveillance footage from the surrounding area in an effort to identify and apprehend the suspects
The mayor of Alimos in southern Athens has pledged to make every effort to “bring order” to the area
which for years has been identified with mobsters and illegality
“We have gone to great lengths to clear the Riviera of drugs and thugs
we won’t go back to the old days,” said Mayor Andreas Kondylis
who appealed to the judiciary to investigate reports of threats issued against him
he said citizens had told him bouncers are threatening to take action in response to municipal inspections at coastal establishments and nightclubs
Last summer Kondylis had asked beachside establishments to comply with the rules
particularly with regard to noise pollution
The Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) has thrown its support behind Kondylis

After much controversy over the abrupt closure of her Mykonos beach club and axed MTV show based on her Mykonian business
Lilo is not giving up on her beach club venture
Having relocated to a much smaller and humbler scale in comparison to her former Mykonos seaside occupancy
it seems that the TV star is facing quite some challenges attracting beach goers to her club
On numerous days the beach club looked quite empty with only a handful of sun-beds filled and single number figures of patrons throughout the day
seated drinking/eating areas and of course sun-beds
even during Athens’ hottest days and weekends
where neighbouring beaches and beach clubs were full
leaving many without sun-beds and umbrellas
It is unknown if the seaside venture that turns into a nightclub party scene after the sun sets
is more of a success than its daytime beach club and the decision behind closing and moving the Lohan luxury Mykonos beach club to Athens
For those interested in checking out Lilo’s Lohan Seaside

Countless delights shape our summer experiences
and some have evolved into time-honoured traditions

Its crowning glory in 2012 was due to its prime location on Apostolou Pavlou pedestrian street
offering viewers a clear vista of the floodlit Acropolis
“Cine Thision” also enjoys the distinction of being Athens’ oldest open-air cinema
only briefly interrupted during the German Occupation
Regulars will vouch for its other winning aspects besides the Acropolis view
such as the sublime freshly-baked cheese pie

complemented by Messolonghi’s bottarga – the perfect meze for the dedicated visitor
“Pool Your Cinema” is a relatively recent venture
it endeavours to fuse the familiar charms of the city’s summer cinemas with a lavish experience that celebrates classic movies and significant successes from Hollywood’s golden age
It’s a risk that paid off handsomely

The charming courtyard of “Athenaia” in Kolonaki harks back to memories of an older Athens

Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national occasions
It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War
It is also the day when we remember all Australians who have served and died in war and in operational services
Australia had been a federated nation for only 13 years
and its government was eager to establish a reputation among the nations of the world
Australia was automatically placed on the side of the Commonwealth
Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the Allied navies
The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople
The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April
meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman-Turkish defenders
What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate
and the campaign dragged on for eight months
the Allied forces were evacuated from the peninsula
with both sides having suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships
More than 8,000 Australian soldiers had died in the campaign
Gallipoli had a profound impact on Australians at home
and 25 April soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who died in the war
Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives
the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy
What became known as the “Anzac legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations
shaping the ways in which they viewed both their past and their future
