they ask about the Acropolis and all the other questions that come up when you mention big cities but there was always a glaring omission in the conversation—no one ever asked about the beach The beach isn’t something that comes to mind when you think of Athens But I love to swim and couldn’t imagine spending winter in a place without a warm beach to go swimming Glyfada—the Greek capital’s seaside offering—is an absolute stunner I’d been scouring the world for almost two decades in search of the perfect place to spend the rest of my life’s winters After years of research on the Amalfi Coast of Italy and even the Andean foothills in Bolivia… my list hadn’t narrowed but there was a part of me that was disheartened and daunted by a life of eternal wandering That was before I spent a year living in Glyfada on the Athens Riviera like the sparkling waters of the Aegean Sea The slower pace of this seaside suburb and its proudly displayed Blue Flag beach could convince you that you’ve been transported not 15 minutes from the heart of downtown Athens The pretty marina bustles with fishermen untangling octopus and squid from their nets while sailboats prepare for a trip around the Cyclades islands The waterfront is the focal point of the Glyfada coast But a short walk down a multi-use path busy with joggers and bicycles brings you to a gorgeous whitesand beach complete with sublime blue water and tan Greek men playing paddle tennis in Speedos The perfect place to sit on a park bench and let the gentle Mediterranean sun warm you until it’s time for lunch and you’d have to try very hard to avoid seeing a souvlatzidika (a restaurant specializing in gyros—a shwarma-style wrap costing about $3.50) for even two minutes tucked in a quiet neighborhood off the tram line serves liters of Belgian ales and giant plates of grilled meats It feels more like a bierhaus in Munich than an authentic Greek restaurant until the live music begins and boisterous Greek families stream in the door The variety of restaurants and pubs reminds me of a major melting pot city in the U.S. and Glyfada may owe that influence to the heavy expat population that fell in love and stuck around after the nearby U.S Sitting at a café with an icy mug of Czech Pilsner or craft IPA That’s not to say you aren’t living in the most authentic Greece you can imagine Walk three blocks up from the main square and you’re in a maze of sunbleached condos with blue-haired Greek grandmothers on their terrace beating rugs with broomsticks and hanging clothes out to dry in the sea breeze Tiny also because that is the name of the bakery-restaurant that she has been running with her mother, Maria, for 11 years in Punta del Este, Uruguay “The house we bought in Uruguay before it was turned into a bakery was already named La Linda (Uruguyans often name their houses) and since it is traditionally considered rude to change the name of the house that goes into new ownership because it so aptly represented what we were trying to build there,” she added People who visit the Uruguayan bakery La Linda in Glyfada often ask her how this project came about so far away from her homeland and how she got these strong ties with our country “My father is responsible for this love at first sight. His professional obligations (he works for a large shipping company) brought him for long periods to Greece, and more specifically to Glyfada where he lived so that he could combine the ease of commuting to work with his passion for the sea,” Isabella said I understood that this is where I would like to live in the future,” the Latina revealed She did not have to wait long for this future, and she expanded her business activity to Greece as well, transferring La Linda, exactly as it is, with the same philosophy and with the exact same menu, from Uruguay to Athens She even took the heads of the kitchen of La Linda in Glyfada all the way to Uruguay to train them in the local delicacies of the menu and experience “up close the philosophy and atmosphere of the original shop to familiarise themselves with the locals and the tastes they prefer and so that they can understand the history and traditions of the place.” For now, Isabella has managed to create a sophisticated corner that churns butter and attracts all the fans of Latin American pastries early in the morning in its comfortable always with the open kitchen in the industrial-style hall of La Linda as a background Sweet and savoury pastries and wines from Uruguay Among others, the Argentinian Torta Rogel, which looks quite reminiscent of the classic millefeuille consists of layers of thin biscuit and dulce de leche while a generous dose of burnt Swiss meringue covers its surface There are also the stuffed Alfajores biscuits, the Cocada, another traditional Latin American sweet with a biscuit base, dulce de leche in the middle (brought directly from Uruguay), and a thin layer of coconut cake on top, the Medialuna, the Uruguayan version of the croissant The menu has recently been strengthened by spicy Empanadas filled with ground beef, olives, eggs, and other savoury delicacies, perfectly accompanying La Linda’s great collection of local Uruguayan wines (served by the bottle or by the glass) So far, the service follows a self-service philosophy (sweet and savoury dishes are served on disposable paper plates) However, this will gradually change as the space will also start to function as a restaurant, serving a small and comprehensive menu for meat lovers and side dishes based on Argentinian and Uruguayan recipes Loukia Chrisovitsanou is a columnist for Cantina. into his pool around 18:35 to enjoy a sunset swim He was seen swimming vigorously for about ten minutes until 18:45 before suddenly coming to a stop and sinking to the bottom of the pool The video confirms that Baldock was alone during the incident suggesting that his death was due to natural causes as no other individuals were present at the time who resides in England with their one-year-old son became alarmed when she was unable to reach her husband by phone on their child’s birthday — an occasion he would not have missed she contacted the owners of their Glyfada home to search for him they discovered the balcony door open but did not initially notice Baldock in the pool they checked the pool and found him at its bottom His death was confirmed by an emergency medical professional from Greece’s National Ambulance Service (EKAB) Baldock’s untimely passing has sent shockwaves through the Greek football community Baldock had a notable career with Sheffield United in the Premier League before transferring to Panathinaikos with a half-empty bottle of vodka found nearby has added a layer of mystery to the incident Baldock had not been included in the squad for an upcoming Nations League match between England and Greece His absence in the football world will be deeply felt The Hellenic Police were notified of the tragic incident at 22:30 An investigation is ongoing to confirm the circumstances surrounding his death This unexpected loss leaves Baldock’s family and fans mourning a talented athlete gone too soon Greece – New details have come to light in the tragic death of footballer George Baldock who was found dead in his Glyfada pool last Wednesday evening Initial reports suggesting a vodka bottle was found near the pool have proven inaccurate The bottle actually contained hand sanitizer according to a report by STAR’s Vagelis Goumas Police have been examining security footage and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct the events leading to Baldock’s death While foul play was ruled out early in the investigation authorities are working to confirm Baldock was alone at the time of the incident Footage from the building and surrounding streets has One enduring mystery is the presence of a second glass on a poolside table considered potentially significant at first with investigators believing the glass had been there for some time Baldock’s mobile phone is being analyzed by forensic specialists and toxicology results are expected in two to three weeks Medical Examiner Stavroula Papadodima confirmed that drowning was the cause of death but further tests are being conducted to determine if any underlying medical conditions or substances played a role The investigation continues as authorities attempt to understand how a man who knew how to swim could drown in his own pool The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the European sporting community leaving many to mourn the loss of the young athlete A shipment of 3 million “jihadist pills” and a travel agency in the southern suburbs of Athens In March 2024, at an unsuspected time with what has been happening in the last 24 hours in Syria authorities announced sanctions on 11 individuals and companies believed to have supported Bashar al-Assad’s regime Among them were two individuals allegedly linked to the seizure of one of the largest drug shipments in recent years off the coast of Crete primarily manufacturing Captagon tablets – amphetamines often referred to as “jihadist pills.” The trail of Assad’s network also led to a travel agency in Glyfada Operating for about a year from a corner shop in a quiet neighbourhood the agency left little impression—residents told iMEdD they could barely recall it Special Forces of the Coast Guard carried out a boarding operation on the Syrian-flagged cargo ship Noka It was unclear whether the shippers of the cargo were legitimate entities or ghost companies the ship’s manifest listed food and detergents as its cargo authorities found 6 tons of processed cannabis and 3,127,360 Captagon pills hidden in the double bottoms of eight containers The Syrian captain and the other ten crew members of the Noka were arrested While they denied any knowledge of the drugs eating and sleeping until the next shift came,” testified a crew member “The containers were placed in front of us on the ship and had gone through Syrian state scanners,” he said The eleven sailors remained in custody for 18 months and were eventually found not guilty at a trial in Heraklion In March 2021 a different court ordered that the ship be returned to its owner Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is specifically referring to the drug shipment case in Crete It describes Kayali’s ships as carrying Captagon pills and hashish “both well-known funding sources for the Assad regime,” as noted “Al-Kayali used [the Syria-based company] Neptunus to purchase the cargo ship Noka which was carrying over $100 million worth of Captagon and hashish when it was intercepted in 2018 by Greek authorities on its way from the Syrian port of Lattakia to eastern Libya,” the report stated Bashar al-Assad’s regime had withstood more than a decade of uprisings civil war and international sanctions since the onset of widespread protests in 2011 it collapsed in a remarkably short period of time there is a second person linked to Greece: Syrian Mahmoud Abulilah Al-Dj He is described as responsible for the Noka drug shipment and three other shipments seized in Libya Al-Dj was charged with drug and human trafficking and allegedly registered a travel company with offices in Syria and Dubai The OFAC report noted that the travel company opened a branch in Greece at some point iMEdD identified a travel company with the same name listed in the Greek Business Register – General Commercial Register (G.E.MI.) It was founded in May 2023 with a capital of 25,000 euros Two Syrians appear in the register as founders and shareholders one of whom is listed with the full details of Al-Dj the individual who has been sanctioned by the US as an international drug trafficker and supporter of Assad (Editor’s note: in the Greek Registry there is an additional middle name which is not mentioned in the different versions of the full name given by the US authorities) iMEdD sent written queries to the email addresses of the company’s founders as registered with G.E.MI We visited the address listed as the company’s headquarters in Glyfada It is a quiet neighbourhood near the main road a few people walking on the street were enjoying the winter sun A tenant of the apartment building and a shop customer on the opposite side of the street told iMEdD that the travel agency had been operating for a few months in the corner shop on the ground floor Both individuals said they could barely remember the travel agency An analysis by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime noted that Captagon pill production in Syria had escalated in recent years and was taking place in industrial-scale facilities in areas under the Assad regime’s control “providing it with a crucial financial lifeline amid the country’s costly and protracted civil war.” Additionally, it pointed out that “although Damascus has always denied any involvement, several influential members of the Assad family have been targeted by Western sanctions for this reason the president’s younger brother and commander of the army’s infamous Fourth Division.” iMEdD is a non-profit organization in an effort to enhance transparency founded in 2018 with the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) The 5-star ACE Hotel & Swim Club Athens, located in the former Fenix hotel in the centre of Glyfada marks the reappearance of the ACE chain on European soil The chain has been present in the hotel industry for 25 years It also marks Brook Lane Capital’s first substantive investment venture in the hospitality industry in collaboration with an international name The old Fenix Hotel quietly came into Brook Lane ownership in July 2021 Brook Lane, which started investing in Greek real estate as early as 2017 with purchases of hundreds of millions of euros in commercial real estate (mainly offices and shops), will, in the future, have a strong footprint in the southern suburbs of Athens In addition to investing in the former Fenix, which was one of the largest hotels in the area with a capacity of 120 rooms and suites, the investment company led by fund manager Aziz Francis secured a position in the Ellinikon project with a planned mixed-use tower which will include residential and 5-star hospitality uses worth half a billion euros Brook Lane also announced the purchase from LAMDA of a plot of land within Ellinikon for future As for now, the “ACE Hotel & Swim Club Athens” is set to open in September under the American brand of ACE Hotels, which returns to Europe via Greece after leaving London in 2020 unused units of the southern suburbs with a construction date back to the 70s at a favourable moment both for the tourism of Athens which is experiencing its best year this year which is at the centre of investment interest with luxury recovering the lost glory of the 60s and 70s It is noted that based on the latest assessment of the property (before the reconstruction) the hotel’s value was 18.67 million euros at the end of 2022 The ACE Hotel Group was created in 1999 and has a presence in the USA It now places particular emphasis on entertainment and leisure through the “Swim Club,” with the debut in Europe being made in Glyfada the benefits for the general public include a daily or even annual pass for swimming in the hotel’s two swimming pools is a collection of international boutique hotels in Seattle The “Swim Club” brand is expected to be a key point for the group in the coming years Following the popular “Swim Club” in Palm Springs which opened in 2009 and is due for renovation in 2024 In 2020, the chain closed the “Ace Hotel London” in London, leaving Europe, where it is now returning via Athens the Greek capital is increasingly becoming a destination sought by travellers beyond the Greek islands with the southern suburbs as well as the centre being the focus Stefania Souki is a columnist for New Money. Translated by Paul Antonopoulos READ MORE: Symi: A special island of culture. With thousands of olive trees on its streets, the coastal council of nearly 90,000 hit upon the idea of harvesting the fruit to make oil for its poorer citizens a decade ago Not far from one of Athens’ busiest highways, passing motorists stop and stare at the bucolic agricultural scene going on in front of them on the streets of Glyfada. Nets spread out on the ground, workers picked olives beside a bus stop. With hundreds of olive trees on its streets, the seaside suburb hit upon the idea of harvesting their olives to make oil for its poorer citizens a decade ago. Several other Athens suburbs have since followed. The western port of Patras also does the same, and Greece’s second city Thessaloniki joined them this year. “In addition to keeping the valuable fruit from being lost… this nurtures the olive trees and also protects pedestrians” from slippery sidewalk accidents, the Athens municipality of Alimos said when it appealed for volunteers to help pick its olives earlier this month. A staple in the Mediterranean diet for centuries, a one-litre bottle of olive oil now costs between nine and 18 euros ($9.50-19) on supermarket shelves in Greece. But the Glyfada olive harvest, estimated at around one tonne of olives this year, is being given away for free. “This is good oil… all of Greece makes good olive oil,” said Stavros Giakoumakis, the council’s deputy mayor for greenery, who has overseen the project since 2014. “Our land is the land of plenty, boys. Whatever we plant takes root,” gushed the 70-year-old, who also makes oil from his own olive trees on his native island of Crete. “If every municipality did the same, vulnerable families would have enough olive oil to last the year,” he said. Local resident Eleni Papachristopoulou, who moved to the area in the 1970s, said the trees on her street were planted over 50 years ago. “For years, the olives would fall on the ground and nobody picked them up,” she said. With Spain and Italy, Greece is a major EU olive oil producer and has the highest annual consumption per capita in the bloc at around 12 kilograms per person, according to EU figures. Glyfada’s street oil tastes tangy and stings the throat – both signs of purity. But health experts caution that produce grown in urban areas should be tested for harmful chemicals. A private group of experts, the Scientific Society of Olive Encyclopedists (4E), this month warned that “olive oil that comes from streets with increased traffic… is burdened with pollutants which in high concentrations constitute dangerous chemicals.” Of particular concern are mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAHs), which according to the European Food Safety Authority can enter through environmental contamination, and may damage DNA and cause cancer. “Olive trees in areas where the atmosphere is polluted by exhaust gases may have an increased amount of MOAHs in the fruit, and consequently also in olive oil,” said 4E member Constantinos Demopoulos, emeritus professor of biochemistry and food chemistry at the University of Athens. “Unlabelled olive oil that circulates under the counter may not have the required composition, not necessarily out of malice but because of ignorance. I would not consume olive oil that has not been analysed, even if it came from a friend,” he told AFP. 4E warned that local councils “appear to be unaware” of the risks, and that the inspection of street olive oil usually focuses on acidity and other characteristics. Additional tests required to detect the presence of fossil fuel hydrocarbons require more “specialised” laboratories and come at a higher cost, it said. At Greece’s state chemical laboratory, the country’s foremost authority, acidity tests cost 20 euros. Aromatic hydrocarbons tests cost between 150 and 180 euros. Papachristopoulou said she was well aware of the pollution debate. “We are worried, very much so. But people eat (the olives) – soon they won’t have other options anyway,” she said. The new pedestrian-bicycle path along the so-called Athenian Riviera will be ready by the end of 2025. A small section has already been built in Glyfada. However, it has met with reactions from the Municipality of Elliniko, as it passes through residential areas instead of along the beachfront, due to a large-scale investment currently being implemented there. The contract with the company that undertook the project was signed on July 15. The 18-kilometer €19.3-million path starts from Kallithea and ends at Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni Town Hall.  “It is about an urban walk, a cycle path and a pedestrian path that connects the maritime urban landscape of five municipalities, creating a complete route, with the expansion of parking areas, regeneration and creation of new green spaces,” said Nikos Hardalias, governor of the Attica region, which has the responsibility of the project’s construction and maintenance.  GreeceChevron AthensChevron For a sure-fire hit of coastal glamour with none of the hassle of Greek ferries or domestic airports. The blaze has spread across the slopes of Mount Hymettus, which overlooks Athens, sending clouds of thick smoke drifting over the city’s southern suburbs. Strong winds have helped fan the fire. There is concern about damage to power lines, and traffic has been diverted away from the area. Residents have been evacuated from some parts of the Voula and Glyfada regions, about 12.4 miles (20km) from the city centre. More than 100 firefighters aided by six firefighting aircraft and four helicopters fought the blaze that started after midday in the city’s suburb of Glyfada, the fire brigade said. For now, the exact content of restrictions is unclear, but the inclusion of a number of areas of Attica in the relevant provisions seems to be a harbinger of future developments. How the selection has been made has raised questions, both due to the low penetration of short-term rentals and the fact they are not areas with a deficit housing and high demand from long-term tenants. Accordingly, the “control areas” include districts that are in very strong demand. In several, the phenomenon of shortage in housing for students or public officials is observed every year, so the search for solutions is now imperative. These are the municipal units Paralia in Pieria, Skiathos, Corfu, Zakynthos, Ermoupoli on Syros, Santorini, Kos, Mykonos, Afantou, Ialyssos and Kallithea on Rhodes, Tinos, Malia and Hersonissos in Iraklio, and Nea Kydonia in Hania. satisfied after having helped attract international interest to the resort towns that dot the coastline stretching south of Athens which she discovered following her marriage to the shipping heir Aristotle Onassis which opened this past November on the site of a beloved former beach club Photo: Rupert PeaceTo arrive at the property you must first make your way through the traffic-clogged streets of Athens then whizz down the grand boulevard of the 91 highway that runs south from the center of the city Somewhere among the seafront suburbs of the Glyfada neighborhood your taxi will swerve to the right and breeze through a gleaming white gateway; then swooping up to the colossus of white stone that serves as the resort’s central hub hovering over the beach like a groovy John Lautner spaceship that just landed directly from Palm Springs The sound of the nearby fountain and the rhythmic slatted exterior lends it all a hallucinatory shimmer; meanwhile a pair of palm trees playfully poke through a Swiss cheese-like hole in the curved (It turns out the trio of architectural firms responsible for the resort’s striking design were very much inspired by the mid-century modern movement and its zenith in the heart of the Coachella Valley.) Photo: Rupert PeaceOnce you’ve soaked in the resort’s architectural wonders—and walked through the central atrium for a seamless check-in with one of the friendly powder blue-suited staff—it’s time to take in its equally striking natural wonders From the expansive terrace of the main building views stretch out to the glittering blue of the Mediterranean Sea beyond to the rugged topography of the Saronic Islands you’ll see the dozens of bungalows belonging to the hotel tucked within the surrounding groves of pine and olive trees as well as the enormous hotel villas perched along the coastline with direct beach access A spit of land also owned by the hotel contains a forest reserve that has been left to the wild for hiking and swimming (Upon being spirited away by an electric buggy to my room a local member of the staff explained that the resort had been carefully and unobtrusively laid out to comply with the local zoning laws which deemed that One&Only could only develop on the footprint of the resort that previously existed on the site; luckily that layout was surprisingly intuitive for a venue built in the 1950s.) Photo: Rupert PeaceOnce settled in my room—think a sleek tasteful combination of pearl-white local marbles and light woods; a coastal color palette of sandy neutrals across plush rounded furniture; and floor-to-ceiling glass windows for gazing out at your private plunge pool fringed by swaying palms—it was time to explore the grounds Perched on a slightly higher promontory than the rest of the resort—a kind of miniature Acropolis of wellness—its cutting-edge facilities include an airy But the real reason you’ll want to make a stop here is for its partnership with Guerlain and creams paired with a scalp massage had the magical effect of somehow bringing my raw and reddened complexion back to life Photo: Courtesy of One&Only AesthesisAlso worth noting for anyone planning to lounge around on the property: No visitor to One&Only Aesthesis is at risk of going hungry You can start your day with one of their lavish breakfast spreads of Greek cheeses with cold cuts and honey or a decadent poached eggs dish served with local crab and lemony hollandaise then head back to the central restaurant of Ora for a pitch-perfect Mediterranean lunch where chef Ettore Botrini offers inventive (but not too inventive) spins on the classics: his riff on spanakopita is a must-try with the feta and spinach pastry pie here reinvented as an addictive salad perfect for tucking into on a balmy summer’s day you might also be inclined to head over to the outbuilding that houses El Bar a playful tapas restaurant overseen by the three-Michelin-starred Andalusian chef Paco Morales Moorish-inflected menu that ranges everything from smoky eggplant tacos to albacore tuna “tonnato” and braised leeks sprinkled with morcilla sausage and bechamel sauce (The cocktails here deserve a special mention Photo: Courtesy of One&Only AesthesisStill what charms the most about the property is the enthusiasm of the staff—the locals in particular—to see this corner of the world revived to its former glories (A Four Seasons outpost opened in 2019 just down the road and there are whispers of more luxury hospitality brands scouting the area for potential sites.) There’s a certain reverence for the history of the place that extends all the way through to the experiences on offer designed to appease both the more adventurous traveler—day trips by speedboat to the nearby islands of Aegina and Agistri or jetskiing and snorkeling in one of the nearby coves—as well as anyone seeking to dive headfirst into the city’s many layers of history overlooking the city’s national gardens and ritzy embassy quarter The afternoon concluded with a guided tour of the city’s bustling markets before heading up to the Acropolis for sunset: there are few experiences quite as magical as witnessing the peachy glow of sunset fall across the Parthenon its columns casting long shadows as the Greek flag is hoisted to full mast ready for the soldiers who watch over the historic site at night After all that rushing around central Athens it’s this that serves as One&Only Aesthesis’s unique selling point—and what a draw it is most travelers would spend a few days in the hustle and bustle of Athens before hopping on one of the ferries to take them to one of the many thousands of more secluded peaceful islands whose siren call has continued to lure in tourists over the decades One&Only Aesthesis offers the best of both worlds Spending an afternoon on a sun lounger by its sweeping pool or taking a boat trip to a nearby island for grilled octopus and ouzo you can attune yourself to the lazy rhythms of a beach or island holiday; after a few days you can easily catch a $20 taxi into the city center for shopping and sightseeing is being transformed into a development that will include shops and apartments—if there’s one corner of Athens that is firmly on the come-up it may possess a seductive air of throwback glamour but it also feels attuned to the needs and wants of today’s traveler seeking cultural immersion alongside all the creature comforts—and serves as a convincing argument for Athens as a destination for sightseers and sun-seekers alike (The hotel is planning to open a beach club and Peruvian restaurant next door later this summer which will undoubtedly attract a glamorous crowd of Athenian glitterati.) Yet despite the resort’s opulence the warmth and visible pride of the local staff—and the attention to detail in preserving its gorgeous natural surroundings—make it clear that it’s not only the hedonism of the Athens Riviera’s heyday that has returned in full force here The Danish Home Lighting Trend That Can Improve Your Mental Health In America’s Cities, Saunas Are Becoming the Hottest Social Spot Millie Bobby Brown Shares Her Favorite Paella Recipe—and Details About Her Wedding to Jake Bongiovi A Day-by-Day Guide to Hiking the Legendary Nakasendo Trail in Japan Never miss a Vogue moment and get unlimited digital access for just $2 $1 per month It was 5 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon at the Glyfada Tennis Club in southern Athens and a small crowd had gathered When Stefanos Tsitsipas arrived at the club where he started his career – one that took him to greater heights that any Greek tennis player has ever accomplished – his fans and acolytes greeted him with enthusiasm But he seemed equally to enjoy the occasion hitting a ball around with them on the courts signing hundreds of autographs and deftly managing the shy younger fans and overbearing parents at the offices of the Adidas sportswear company I asked him what returning to Glyfada meant for him “It was emotional; more than I expected,” he told Kathimerini “It’s something I had been trying to organize for five years but the pieces had not fallen into place to make it happen until now I learned to play tennis on those courts; I owe my career to that start at the Glyfada Tennis Club.” Tsitsipas also expresses his gratitude for the first two people to coach him at the club “Giorgos Spiliopoulos taught me discipline He’s the reason I fell in love with tennis Giorgos Fountoukos made me see how far I could go in tennis The Greek champion was in Athens to take part in the qualifying game weekend at the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) between teams Greece and Slovakia for the Davis Cup the biggest event on the tennis calendar in terms of national teams I asked him what it meant to play a particularly solitary sport for the national colors “I have always wanted to put Greece in the World Group of the Davis Cup; it’s something that has never been done in the history of tennis in our country,” he says referring to the 18 national teams that take part in the main leg of the event known informally as the “Tennis World Cup.” similar to reaching the quarterfinals or even the semifinals in the soccer World Cup,” he says noting that you often see players transcend the framework of the solitary game that is the norm in the ATP Tour when participating in tournaments like the Davis Cup “I often see them becoming more passionate when they’re playing for the national flag – this has happened to me too,” he says is at a “crossroads,” as veteran tennis journalist Christopher Clarey recently described it He started the season with an impressive performance at the Australian Open would have propelled him to the top of the global rankings ‘People always see things from their own perspective 25-year-old Tsitsipas’ performance has been lackluster He is still high in the rankings as fifth seed but many wonder whether he missed his opportunity and the baton will pass straight from the greats of the “golden generation” (Roger Federer Djokovic) to Carlos Alcaraz and the other incredibly promising 20-somethings “There was a period roughly between 2018 and 2020 The younger players “play with incredible energy and thirst “They play without anything weighing on their minds; free of care.” His tone is almost nostalgic as if he’s talking about himself five years ago if he wakes up and goes to sleep thinking about his first Grand Slam I was addicted to this target when I was younger and this deprived me of something This doesn’t mean that I’m not happy with what I have accomplished; I do want to improve as a player But the key is finding a balance between your private life the Spanish tennis player and Tsitsipas’ girlfriend “Her presence in my life helps me a lot,” he says “She has changed my approach to the game in a way that I never expected.” This brings us to the criticism he has come under about his relationship with Badosa which some say is distracting him from the game “I’ve been told that I need to change him hundreds of times But this comes from people who don’t know what my daily routine looks like I train six days a week and spend more than half the day doing physical therapy and talking to my team about nutrition – doing everything I need to do to reach the next level,” he says Tsitsipas also confirms the end of Greek-Australian Mark Philippoussis’ very brief stint as his coach “What we’d said with Mark was that we would do the American part of the season together That partnership has ended and the baton is going back to my father.” Three days before our meeting with Tsitsipas won the US Open and climbed back into the top spot of the ATP Rankings He has more Grand Slams than any other player in the history of tennis I ask Tsitsipas how he explains the phenomenon and whether the Serbian star is the greatest tennis player of all time He breaks record after record,” he responds even though he has nothing to prove anymore,” I add He’s never happy; it’s like he’s always trying to prove something to someone He has that glint in his eye,” says Tsitsipas going on to refer to the match against Alcaraz in Cincinnati in August “I never thought that Alcaraz would lose that game Yet Djokovic found a way to make that happen.” approaching the question from the prism of who has inspired people more and who has made the biggest impact “The finesse and beauty he brought to tennis I don’t think anyone else will ever match him,” Tsitsipas adds of the Swiss superstar Tsitsipas hails the Spanish player “as the greatest fighter I have ever seen at least for those players who reach the big leagues is a very lucrative sport (Tsitsipas has made more than $27 million from tournaments alone) What is the hardest part of life on the tour “Sleeping in a different bed almost every seven days; a different city having to recover from jet lag and start training before each tournament… Doing that 32-34 weeks a year has an enormous impact on the body and on the mind,” says Tsitsipas I’ve had some very bad experiences in the past that affected my psychology on the court It’s important to feel like you’re at home to have an atmosphere where you’re happy to go back to your room The same goes for your team: They need to inspire you want the best for you instead of looking out for their own interests.” Our discussion could not skip over Tsitsipas’ public persona and the reactions he often provokes with his social media posts to reward myself with some nice things,” he says He refers to one of his more controversial posts regarding a visit to London’s iconic luxury department store “It was my first time there and I was surprised at how great it made me feel My first thought was how nice it would be to have something like that in Athens for the tourists; how much it would help the country’s economy and reputation.” “The comment was not taken like that,” I observe People always see things from their own perspective We all have our opinions and we should express them freely,” he responds “But given how eager some users are to misconstrue these opinions perhaps some things are best left unsaid,” I counter We went on to chat some more about tennis in general about the great players who reached the top before he was even born but the task of managing fame seemed to cast a shadow would light up when he saw someone he knew Now it remains to be seen whether his father’s return as coach will give him the reassurance he needs and whether he will hold onto the thirst that will take him to new heights The Metropolitan arrived in the courtyard of the Holy Metropolitan Church of Sts Constantine and Helen in Glyfada where Bishop Konstantinos of Androusa handed him over the Archieratic rod The new Metropolitan of Glyfada was welcomed by the authorities of the town An official Doxology and the enthronement ceremony were held afterwards at the Metropolitan Church attended by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate approved on October 4th the canonization of Eldress Sophia Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew traveled by air to Antalya the Patriarchate of Jerusalem solemnly celebrated the Sunday of the Myrrh-Bearing Women...
