Despite his impressive collection of medals from European and international competitions
Tentoglou has yet to break the Greek national record of 8.66 meters set by Louis Tsatoumas in 2007

he is making his own unique history and making us all proud

Grevena is the mushroom capital of Greece
There is a very particular reason why you should visit Grevena
as the city of Grevena is considered to be the “mushroom capital” of Greece
don’t be surprised by the many sculptural mushroom clusters that adorn its parks
Welcome to the first town on earth to have the unusual honour to be officially declared a “mushroom town”
The region of Grevena has a long tradition in the collection
recording and the multifaceted promotion and utilization of wild mushrooms an ecclectic product that grows in seasonal abundance in their forests
Throughout the prefecture more than 2,500 species of mushrooms have been recorded
over a third of the 7,000 species in Greece
and even though hundreds of them are edible
Mushrooms –and this is no exaggeration- are part of the local culture and have evolved into a not only a vital product for Grevena but also but of its local identity
attracting thousands of visitors all year round
George Konstantinidis is a teacher and president of the Friends of Mushrooms of Greece
For the last 33 years his name has been synonymous with the promotion of mushrooms in Grevena
He has contributed to the identification of hundreds of species
writing several books and organising events
mushrooms are part of the local culture in Grevena: “Their collection
proverbs and myths that have developed around their appearance and how they grow
The variety and dissemination of dozens of species of native mushrooms are not only an important element of the biodiversity of the region
but have made the southernmost prefecture of Macedonia a top destination for mushroom picking and as you can imagine the local cuisine revolves around their earthy treasure
are an alternative and ecological driver of development
attracting many visitors from Greece and abroad
The aim of the Municipal Authority is to further strengthen this unique local product that has made our town the “mushroom capital” (of Greece)
noting that they have contributed substantially to the increase in the number of visitors to the area
apart from being a fine food and raw material for the preparation of high quality cuisine
are also a source of inspiration for lovers of photography and arts (painting
A stroll around the town will prove the latter
as you’ll be impressed by the many artistic works that adorn the town’s central spots as well as at the many catering and mushroom processing businesses
Grevena and the region’s mushrooms were featured in an extensive feature on the National Geographic TV network in Great Britain
The mushrooms are found throughout the prefecture of Grevena: north in Voios near the border with Kozani
as well as in the meadows and on the banks of the rivers Aliakmonas and Venetiko
Searching and collecting mushrooms in Grevena’s rich and wild environment is a unique experience for the whole family
For those who are “mushroom connoisseurs”
photographing and identifying the hundreds of species of mushrooms in the area
dress warmly and in waterproof boots and set off on your walk in the forest
looking for and identifying the mushrooms to fill your basket with
You can follow the route to the pine forest Alsos Theodoridis
If you still have an appetite for scaling mountains
follow the path that starts from the village of Ziakas (20 km southwest of Grevena) and reaches the peak of Mount Orliakas (altitude 1,464 m)
There are also Alternative Tourism Offices in town
which organise mushroom tours to Valia Kalda or Mount Orliakas
led by experts who who are a mine of information
Often the tours are offer the option of a picnic in a stunning spot on the hunt
Most the local hotels and guesthouses of the area stock leaflets and other types of information
while in bookstores and businesses that sell standard mushroom products
you will find the books of George Konstantinidis
essential for helping you distinguish differnt species and ensuring that you pick the best type for consumption
It is very easy to distinguish between the types of mushrooms that are edible and those that are deleterious
Educate yourself and focus exclusively on these species
Then become familiar with the TOP 5 of the most edible mushrooms of the region
and be aware of the beautiful but toxic Zourlomantaro or Lolomanitis
which you just photograph and finally the most dangerous
Edibility: Edible and particularly flavourful
pseudo-olivascens Bellù & Lanzoni
It is found from April to December in clusters
It is found from May to November in broadleaf forests
It is found from May to December in clusters
in shrub lands with arbutus or among olive trees
Edibility: Deadly· the most dangerous species in Greece and the world
the Pan-Hellenic Mushroom Festival takes place at the “Mushroom Park” in Grevena
the leading mushroom fair in Greece and the largest mushroom festival in the world
as it attracts thousands of visitors from all parts of Greece and abroad
The event takes place in the unique “Mushroom Park” created by the municipality of Grevena at the northeastern end of the city
the work of local woodcarver and member of the Friends of Mushrooms of Greece Yiannis Papatzikas
Make time to visit the “Mushroom Museum” in the village of Lavda
It’s a small mountain village on the slopes of the northern Pindos moutain range
where a traditional stone building houses wild mushrooms
Information on all types of mushrooms is provided with a rich bibliography and fascinating audio-visual exhibits
the local cuisine has made full use of mushrooms
which have an important place in the diet and daily life of the inhabitants of the area
on restaurant menus and on the shelves of businesses selling local products based mainly on mushrooms
Almost all dishes served in local restaurants are based around mushrooms
which are known for their high nutritional value
Mushrooms are rich in protein and antioxidants
low in calories (100 grams yield only 22 calories) and cholesterol-free
gourmet dishes and some suprising desserts you should try when in Grevena: mushroom magiritsa (Greek Easter soup with dill and lemon)
mushroom pasteli (Greek honey and sesame bars)
and even spoon sweet (the brain-child of G
Remember that wild mushrooms bring out their full flavour when eaten fresh: grilled
They work well with cream and generally do not combine well with tomatoes
In Grevena and the surrounding area there are many mushroom growers and producers
On their shelves and in their refrigerators you will find pickled mushrooms
flavoured pasta and cheese with mushrooms and truffles
Grevena is a typical example of how a small community has managed to make the most of the “gift” that nature has generously given it
managing to achieve a special tourist and gastronomic identity
boosting the local economy both from the large number of visitors and from the standardization of mushrooms and related products
The mushroom managed to become a focal brand for the town of Grevena
the local authorities and the community sharing the vision of theamateur mycologist and author of seven relevant books
who contributed decisively to the development of mushroom know-how in Greece
“The mushrooms of Grevena are now the most recognizable feature that promotes our region and mobilizes human potential in a multidimensional way
by “marrying” the dream with reality
using mushrooms as a spearhead to highlight all the virtues of our land
156 km from Thessaloniki (1 hour and 50 minutes) and 48 km (40 minutes) from Kozani and the State Airport “Philippos”
In the town there are hotels and guesthouses
The excavation work and promotion of the ancient site of Kastri at Grevena
will resume after an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
The region of West Macedonia will fund the research programme of the university-run excavation under the designation "Archaeological Research at the Ancient Acropolis; architectural and structural remains and recording of findings," Regional Director Thodoros Karypidis said
Archaeologists of the University will carry out the research and excavation
with priority on the cataloguing of the remaining foundations of buildings in order to protect and preserve them

a three million year old "fossilized zoo" was discovered by Greek geologists yesterday in the northern Milia region near the town of Grevena
This "zoo" contains the fossilized remains of prehistoric rhinos
The discovery included a pair of tusks from a mastodon (pictured left
an ancient species of elephant that lived three million years ago
which weigh one ton each and are mostly intact
are 5 meters (16.5 feet) and 4 meters (14 feet) long
and are thought to be the longest ever found
"We have contacted the Guinness Book of Records
and are expecting an answer by the end of summer
We are confident that the Grevena mastodon will occupy the place is deserves in the book of records," said Evangelia Tsoukala
a professor of geology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Tsoukala heads a team of Greek and Dutch experts along with Dutch specialists from the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam
who have been working in the Grevena region for the past 10 years
The team plans to compare their mastodon fossils with those found in the Americas
the largest fossilized tusks ever discovered in the Americas are probably 3.9 metres (12.8 feet) long
The team also dug up a fossilized humerus
the long bone of the arm that reaches from the shoulder to the elbow
along with thigh bones and some teeth believed to have belonged to the same animal (pictured right
believed to have been a male that was approximately 25 years old
was 3.5 meters tall and weighed over 6 tons
and is useful for studies of a period dating back three million years," explained Tsoukala
The same team discovered another pair of mastodon tusks
Other European mastodon fossils have been previously discovered in England
are all classified into the taxonomic order
While superficially similar to their cousins
the mastodon's tusks pointed forward rather than curling upwards as mammoths' did
the two extinct species' teeth were also different
Mastodons probably first appeared around five million years ago
and became extinct in Europe between two and three million years ago
The mastodon eventually also disappeared from North America between 9,000 and 12,000 years ago
The team hopes that some of the animal's DNA can be recovered from the tusks
Scientists will study the bones at a research center in the Milia region of northern Greece
and eventually these fossils will be displayed at a Museum in Milia

A bus full of athletes and coaches departs from the Olympic Stadium heading to the Olympic Village
he had participated in the qualifying round of his event without making it to the final
who had only started taking sports seriously two years prior
Having traveled alone to Brazil because SEGAS decided his coach wasn’t needed (even though just months before the Games
he was enjoying every moment when he felt a hand on his shoulder…
“Do you know who that is?” asked the long-haired man
his face lit up because the question was about his idol: the incredible Cuban long jumper Iván Pedroso
This brief dialogue between Giorgos Pomaski (the long-haired man) and Miltos Tentoglou (the kid) sparked a partnership that has brought Greece countless proud moments and created a new modern legend in athletics
An entire stadium stands and applauds Miltos Tentoglou seconds after winning his second consecutive Olympic gold medal
making him the second to do so after the great Carl Lewis (who won four consecutive golds from 1984 to 1996 in the same event)
And the dialogue between the two protagonists is just as short
but so revealing of the special relationship they have developed
“changing” each other and… reaching new heights each time
“I wasn’t good,” Tentoglou said
who hadn’t stopped laughing with joy and pride
to which Giorgos Pomaski replied: “It doesn’t matter; we got it for the second time.”
Even though Tentoglou still admires and watches his idol’s jumps (Pedroso is now a coach in Spain)
on the bus that takes athletes to and from the Olympic Village
the young athletes’ eyes are fixed on him
and their coaches lean in conspiratorially and whisper
When coach Vangelis Papanikos first saw him doing parkour at the Grevena Municipal Stadium
‘Where will you do parkour in the winter
Come here where we have an indoor facility.'” He started coming sporadically
but we quickly decided to focus on the long jump,” recalls his first coach
who realized he had a rough diamond on his hands
but his biggest challenge was keeping him in the stadium…
“He disappeared for a while and returned in late February
we went to Thessaloniki for the Panhellenic Youth Championship
where he took 2nd place with a jump of 6.40m
and I promise to attend all the training sessions from next year.’ I asked him if he meant it
they met in Grevena—the then national track coach Yiannis Koutsioras
Papanikos couldn’t and didn’t want to leave Grevena
and five potential coaches were discussed to take over Miltos once he moved to Athens
Before they even had the chance to mention all the candidates
announced that he would work “only with Pomaski.” The die had been cast
“The best should train with the best
in the best facilities for both the athlete and the coach,” said Mr
explaining simply and understandably why Miltos moved to Athens
which coincided with a change in his technique (a 2.5-stride jump) that he started testing right after Rio
And even though it initially produced lower results… both the former and current coach knew this was the path to success
Coexisting with Pomaski was a significant challenge for both
who came to Greece in 1988 because of his wife Eva Nikolaou
had a track record of successful partnerships but was also known for being tough
managed to transform even the tough Pomaski
forcing him to reconsider a significant part of his coaching approach
That doesn’t mean Pomaski goes easy on Tentoglou
no athlete could win 2 Olympic gold medals and another 10 medals in European and World Championships by slacking off
“I’m a bit lazy,” and other remarks like “I don’t like weights” or “I did very few jumps” in previous weeks created the impression of complete relaxation
which couldn’t be further from the truth
“Sometimes I ‘pamper’ him… I don’t train him; I maintain him
But he uses his body so well that he doesn’t need to rely much on other parameters,” Pomaski said in an interview with gazzetta.gr
adding with meaning: “He’s the most disciplined of them all
and he’ll do the training he needs to do
Miltos’ execution in training is at 120%
so I have to reduce the volume of training.” So why is Miltos “lazy”
Because something he doesn’t like doing
order food instead of cooking (even though he likes barbecuing)
or choose to stay home to watch a movie or play his favorite video games instead of going out
But there’s a big difference between being “lazy” and being “lazy”…
When Miltos lost the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene
in the last jump (China’s Wang did 8.36m
“It’s a shame I lost it in the last jump
but it would have been a disgrace to win with 8.32m,” he said
This is the only final he’s lost since 2017
but it also shows how he thinks and operates
That final stayed with him for another reason: the tweet by the legendary Carl Lewis
who expressed his disappointment with the level of the long jump today
Tentoglou respects all the old jumpers immensely
but he won’t accept being questioned and having his pride hurt
but he won his first gold in the long jump in 1984 in Los Angeles at the age of 23 with a performance of 8.30m
Miltos won it at the same age in Tokyo with a performance of 8.41m
Now he wants to prove to Lewis and others that he deserves a place in the pantheon of the event
and that will come with the big jump he’s chasing obsessively
So after leaving Paris having achieved his main goal of the year
he has already set his mind on his next leap
Tsatoumas’ national record is a goal to be able to tell his first coach
we’ve erased that too,” but his main goal is a jump of 8.75m
To prove to everyone that he doesn’t win because there’s no strong competition but because he’s one of the best of all time
but the internal driving force that pushes him to exceed his limits each time
Miltos remains the same humble and genuine character he’s shown to be from the start
And although it’s still early to talk about Los Angeles and the 2028 Olympics
“I’d like to reach Pyrros Dimas’ three golds.” Honestly
is there anyone who believes that this kid from Grevena

Attention is focused on Grevena today regarding electronic auctions
as it is the “day of Alfa Wood Pindos,” one of the largest timber industrial units
It is also the second most “expensive” auction – at least for this period – after the Hippodrome in Markopoulo
with the starting bid price increased to €23.86 million
is whether this time an investor will be found willing to give a “lifeline” to a unit almost ready to operate
This seems unlikely given that there was no interest in previous auctions when the price was significantly lower
It should be noted that Alfa Wood Pindos has been in the midst of auctions since late 2019
it went up for auction with a starting price of €27,018,765
Another auction was scheduled for January 24
with the starting price further reduced to €13,279,066
This was avoided as the debtor company filed an appeal
requesting that the foreclosure report be corrected regarding the valuation and starting bid price
The Single-Member Court of First Instance of Grevena
setting the price at €10,253,522 for the property with the buildings and €13,611,000 for the machinery
with the new total starting price at €23,864,522
The auction includes a plot of land located in the estate area of the Municipal District of Mavranaioi
at “Magoula” with a total area of 107,646 square meters
on which the company’s industrial facilities are located
These consist of 34 buildings with a total area of 27,764.98 square meters
constructed at various times from 1987 to 2010
It should be noted that according to the appraisal report
there are also several unauthorized buildings
covering approximately 23,500 square meters
The rest of the plot is simply leveled with natural soil
Along with the plot and the industrial buildings
the auction includes a multitude of machinery and tools
According to the May 2023 appraisal report
the value of industrial properties in the broader area shows an upward trend
and sales transactions are continuously taking place
while the supply of similar properties for sale is less than the demand
resulting in upward pressure on their market values
The main activities of Alfa Wood Pindos are the production
and trade of primary and secondary timber products
mainly the production and trade of fiberboard
and use of electricity from RES or Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems
It also engages in the wholesale trade of central heating items
and other general and specialized machines
it is involved in the retail trade of boilers for central heating
according to the latest financial statement for the fiscal year 2022
the company’s turnover was only €7,866 compared to €530,224 in 2021
accumulated losses amounted to €38,258,333
Alfa Wood Pindos belongs to Alfa Wood Group
the largest group in the domestic wood industry market today
A financially healthy company with strong performance
Alfa Wood’s journey began in 1981 when Antonis Adamopoulos and Christos Agorastos founded Alpha Wood S.A.
with significant investments and successive acquisitions
in 2004 they acquired the Grevena-based timber company “Pindos,” aiming to produce laminate floors
which were experiencing significant growth at that time
The main target was the major market player
while the country was entering an economic crisis
Alfa Wood acquired 73% of Shelman for €11 million
making the Thessalian wood industry leader in the Greek wood and timber products market
and one of the largest manufacturing units in the Balkans
had sales of €47.4 million and pre-tax profits of €3.63 million
acquiring the parent company with factories in Chalkida (where it also had a private port) and Komotini
as well as subsidiaries like the glue industry Chatziloukas S.A
a parquet production and installation company also active in Romania through Sofrom Exim S.A.
it also “inherited” the enormous liabilities and the overstaffed workforce
Alfa Wood Group reacquired the wood production factory of Shelman in Komotini at auction through its subsidiary Hellenic Panel S.A
The group then announced that this investment was made to develop its commercial activities
aiming to maintain the largest wood production factory in Europe under Greek ownership
