When an Athenian’s gaze encounters a cluster of buildings that display uniform architectural elements
trained as they are in the heterogeneous visual clutter of the city
This will also happen to the visitor who perhaps disembarks at Evangelismos metro station and walks for a few hundred meters with their back to Lycabettus Hill
They will walk across the road with the National Gallery on their right and the former Hilton hotel – set to reopen next year as The Ilisian – on the left
they will find themself in the district of Kaisariani – specifically in a long
narrow green park that is located right in the middle of a refugee settlement that survives to this day
where historical memory once met the architecture of necessity and the era
These are the “Prosfygika” (Refugee) buildings
used to house refugees following the Asia Minor Catastrophe (Greco-Turkish War of 1919-22) and the subsequent population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923
What is the destination of this unknown Athenian whose footsteps we are arbitrarily following
Perhaps it is one of the two cafes or a taverna on the north side of the park
they are heading to the large church of Agios Nikolaos Kaisarianis
perhaps they are looking for the place where the next metro station will be built
at the intersection of Ethnikis Antistaseos Avenue and Vasileos Alexandrou Avenue
Or this unknown Athenian is one of the current residents of these apartments
they would either be one of the numerous descendants of the first Asia Minor residents
or one of the many people who relocated there later
having found in these tenements a cheap home in a privileged location of the Greek capital
below the urban forest of Kaisariani but still in the city center
in a tree-filled environment with an unobstructed view of Lycabettus Hill
the prominent buildings facing the park are horizontal complexes of three or four floors
which generally follow some principles of the modernist movement (symmetry
simplicity) and are characterized by a standardized construction pattern without decoration
and small balconies which are often full of pot plants and flowers
In the wider area there are numerous other buildings that were intended for the same use – a little further north
scarred by bullets fired during the Second World War and then the Greek Civil War
In an area which was once was a vacant lot
today there is a beautiful park where children play in the afternoon and residents walk their dogs
following part of the route taken by bus 224
a small river used to flow down from the mountain until it was built over
which some of the old-timers remember ending in another small river
but this is also where the first shacks were built to house the refugees from Turkey
In such a brick house lived the family of Mrs Penelope
whose forebears came to Athens from Smyrna (today Izmir in Turkey) in 1922
they handed over that house to the state so that another
and in exchange they were given a better apartment in the Prosfygika of Agios Nikolaos
in one of the then almost new apartment buildings
It was the building complex that Frederica of Hanover
they got the largest apartment available with four rooms
“They charged us; they didn’t give it to us for free,” she explains
noting that her family had paid 117,000 drachmas at the time
a friend of mine had paid 70,000 [drachmas] to buy a studio apartment further up
Mrs Athanasia has lived in the apartment that was given to her father-in-law
and today she says that not all the apartments went to the vulnerable who needed them
when political upheaval was paving the way for the junta
those who could pull some strings also got one
We call the apartment buildings across the street the ‘Drapetsonian buildings.’ They were supposedly built to house people from the makeshift camps in Drapetsona
people from Epirus and Crete came and the Drapetsonians stayed in Drapetsona
how Greeks from Crete ended up with a house here
I do know that a neighbor worked in a ministry in the 1960s
and one day my husband comes and asks me what I made for dinner
‘Imam bayildi.’ My aunt had shown me how to make it
her grandfather owned flour mills and her grandmother was a teacher
“She would gather all the children and tell them stories
She knew all the verses of [popular 17th century romance] ‘Erotokritos’ by heart
despite living so close to the city center
grew up almost as if they were in the countryside
who was born in one of the apartment buildings overlooking the park and spent his childhood there in the 1980s
“You went to the bakery and they asked you what your parents were doing
We would play until the soles of our shoes were worn out and
the neighbor would come out and threaten to tell our grandmother
There was no way you could do anything wrong without being caught,” recalls Stefanos
His grandfather owned the only grocery store in the neighborhood
and that was because they had made a large fortune in Smyrna
“My grandmother was from Kydonies [Ayvalik] and my grandfather from Smyrna
my great-grandmother would tell me about the harbor below their house
I listened to those stories like a fairy tale.” After the end of the Greco-Turkish War
did not believe that their departure would be something permanent
“Her father dug for two days under the steps of their house and buried everything he had there
with the intention of crossing over for a while to Mytilene
My late great-grandmother always told me to go find the pounds that were hidden under the stairs.” Stefanos remembers the nostalgia in her eyes when she spoke of her homeland: “They didn’t just lose a house
Stefanos is one of those who returned to their family homes as adults
“The apartments are in a very good location
have a good layout and can accommodate large families,” he says
wondering where else one could find open space
that with most of the original residents dead
some apartments are now owned by multiple inheritors and have remained closed for years
and so now some old refugee apartments are inhabited by people of all ages
who are less willing to socialize with their neighbors
who moved into the house where his grandmother once lived four years ago
The apartment where he lives is in the same building as Mrs Penelope
and was given to his family who were refugees from Istanbul
He remembers an issue that had greatly concerned the residents years ago
when there was a discussion about a redevelopment of the area that included the demolition of refugee housing
“They were going to give each of us an apartment in the buildings that they were going to build or elsewhere
but not all the owners agreed and it never happened,” he tells Kathimerini
While he was in favor of the redevelopment
as he recognizes some structural problems in the old blocks
such as the fact that they do not have an elevator and central heating
he was also concerned that some of the comparative advantages of his neighborhood would be lost
but not as beautiful as it is now,” he says
Everyone realizes that when the new metro station is completed nearby the whole area will gain great value and it is possible that discussions about redevelopment will restart
as evidenced by the voices of children in the playground
the skaters in the park and the laundry hanging out on the small balconies
The story first appeared in an article in Kathimerini’s weekend magazine

Construction of Athens’ new Metro Line 4 has uncovered a significant archaeological find: a 22-meter stretch of an ancient road dating back to the 4th century BCE
Discovered at the University of Athens campus in Kaisariani
this road sheds light on the ancient Potamos municipality near Mount Ymittos
Following approval from Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS)
then reinstalled atop the Panepistimioupoli metro station once construction concludes
is the first artifact from Line 4 to be marked for preservation and relocation
Other finds along the line – near Akadimia
Exarchia and Zografou – did not warrant such measures
Metro officials assure the relocation won’t significantly delay the project
the station was planned for central Kaisariani at the Near East Stadium
local officials in 2017 raised concerns over traffic and parking disruptions
prompting its relocation to the university campus
The incidents occurred between Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday, with stores in Zografou, Kypseli, Kaisariani, Glyfada
According to a report by SKAI, six supermarkets were hit in quick succession during the early hours
The attackers used sledgehammers to shatter storefront windows and cause extensive damage
at least one ATM located at a supermarket was specifically targeted during the spree
Greek authorities have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators of the attacks
which appear to have been well-coordinated
No group has claimed responsibility for the vandalism
and police are currently reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence from the crime scenes
This unusual series of attacks has raised concerns among business owners and residents
with many calling for heightened security measures to prevent further incidents

The famous singer worked as a cobbler in the neighbourhood of Kaisariani
until a chance in meeting with Theodorakis
Legendary Greek singer Antonis Kalogiannis passed away on Thursday
The famous singer was born in Athens in 1940 and worked as a cobbler in the neighbourhood of Kaisariani
Theodorakis was enthralled by his dynamic voice and asked him to sing with him on his tours across Europe and the Soviet Union
that Greece’s far-right military dictatorship took over the country
Kalogiannis formed a band and continued to sing
spreading awareness to the rest of the world about Greece’s oppressive dictatorship
Kalogiannis got together once again with Theodorakis
and they continued to fight the dictatorship with their songs of resistance
inspiring the people to rise against the Junta
Kalogiannis is remembered for his moving love songs that were inspired by Greece’s great poets
Kalogiannis also collaborated with some of Greece’s most well-known singers
such as Vicky Moscholiou and Alkistis Protopsalti
Congratulations!” said a customer from another table at the taverna in Ilioupoli
where Kathimerini met on Tuesday with the first Greek politician to be unanimously elected the 35th president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)
The customer was not the only one to congratulate him
At journalist and politician Dimitris Tsiodras’ book launch on Monday evening (“European Integration: The Adventures of a Vision”)
he received kudos from hundreds of people for his new position
both from famous and not-so-famous people in attendance
Roussopoulos served as state minister and government spokesperson for the New Democracy government under Kostas Karamanlis
He was criticized for his alleged role in a scandal involving a property swap between the Vatopedi Monastery in the monastic community of Mount Athos in northern Greece and the Greek state
He resigned from office to prepare his defense
and ultimately remained away from politics for 10 years
the entire Greek political world is united in favor of his success
One could say that his re-election to Parliament in 2019 was a kind of vindication for the 10 difficult years he chose to spend outside politics
including countries such as the United Kingdom
is a recognition of international standing
I wondered how one feels having experienced these political twists and turns
How do you stand before those who once threw mud at you and now pat you on the back
I avoided the temptation to ask this question first because another one preceded it: What is this institution
the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
that has both political and symbolic power
“It is the first with a pan-European scope
Konrad Adenauer and other politicians who were then instrumental in the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community
it could be seen as the ‘UN of Europe’ with 612 full and alternate members from elected national parliamentarians of 46 states
including the 27 that make up the European Union
It produces conventions on extremely important issues
such as the Istanbul Convention on equal rights for men and women
The Convention on Artificial Intelligence is now in preparation
The Council’s Parliamentary Assembly also elects the judges to the European Court of Human Rights.”
The representation of each country is proportional to its population
The Council’s nine committees also play an important role
Roussopoulos had served as chairman of PACE’s Committee on Migration
and as vice chairman of the European People’s Party
he also chaired sub-meetings to draft reports on important issues
In some of them he managed to find a balance in very complex situations
“This previous experience definitely played a role in enabling me to apply for the position successfully
I had consistent attendance and involvement in issues that sometimes put Greece in a difficult position
It is important to be able to deal with these issues with a straightforward and effective approach
so that others can see that you want to defend European values as well
I think I have accomplished that,” he stresses
Did his previous work in journalism and politics help him to develop his negotiating skills
I have met and interacted with great figures in Greece and abroad
but also certainly by reading constantly – I was and remain an avid reader,” he says
I wonder aloud what it is that made a hugely successful journalist in both print and television “cross over to the other side” from journalism to politics
media people enjoy much more immunity compared to politicians
the public’s perception of communicating vessels amplifies
one of my teachers from the Kaisariani high school where I graduated
sent me a questionnaire that I had completed at the age of 15: To the question ‘What do you want to be in the future?’ I had answered
‘A journalist.’ And to the question ‘What would be an unattainable dream for you?’ I had answered with one word
‘Politics.’ It was something I had in me from a young age
had a very strong connection with politics
had fought in the Civil War against his own brother
He raised me and my many brothers and sisters on the principle that national division is the worst thing that can occur
Was there bitterness in your marriage during those 10 years
I went through two commissions of inquiry and a preliminary inquiry by two governments
I was almost referred to the Special Court
I was under constant attack for a long time
I believe that the worst thing is what my wife and children have suffered
don’t take me to school because there are too many photographers and I don’t want to go.’
“I met my wife Mara Zacharea while she was a journalist
went to do postgraduate work in England and then worked for the BBC
‘Why is the minister’s wife working in television?’ [Belgian journalist] Christine Ockrent and Anne Sinclair in France also faced criticism about their husbands’ occupations
But not only did they continue to do their jobs
they went on to get even higher positions than before.”
I then had to sell off half of my assets that I had acquired from my work as a journalist
to becoming a news anchor and she’s now the only female news director on a private TV channel
What kept me calm during that decade was my unshakable belief that I would be vindicated
You can say that my religious beliefs also played a role
People have twice re-elected me after I had been away for 10 years
Now I got this new position but it came with lots of hard work on my part
what kept me going was not only my clear conscience
but the sense that I entered politics to give back
Because as a journalist I had both readership and more money
Perhaps because as a politician there are times when you shout and no one listens and times when you whisper and everyone listens
What is to blame for all that is happening in the Greek political scene with cases like Vatopedi or the Novartis bribery scandal
“People say that the fish stinks from the head
Do the people have no responsibility for who they vote for
I think that whoever is in politics shows sooner or later what they stand for
I set my own personal example when I stood up for my principles and paid the price
Today I have the moral satisfaction for the stance I took
And that was the reward for the tremendous ordeal I went through
how many in my party – and many others – looked at me askance; they did not want to know me
Some of those close to me even deleted photos of us side by side posted on the internet
The funny thing is also that some of them were the first to congratulate me on my new post.”

‘The Last Note’ is a gripping historical drama based on true events
directed by Pantelis Voulgaris and co-written with his wife Ioanna Karystiani
portrays one of the most important chapters of Modern Greek history: the execution of 200 Greek resistance fighters by the German occupiers on May 1st
as reprisal for the Greek Resistance ambush against Nazis
The leading character of the story is Napoleon Soukatzidis (played by Andreas Konstantinou)
an inmate of the Nazi’s Chaidari concentration camp
When news reaches Chaidari that a Greek resistance ambush in Laconia claimed the life of a high-ranking German official and his escorts
Kommandant Karl Fischer orders 200 inmates be executed
Fischer offers Soukatzidis both an opportunity and a conundrum: he can nominate another prisoner to take his place
Cineuropa stated that “this is ultimately how we should be leaving screenings about the history of war and broken lives: with tears in our eyes.”

Across the street from the Temple of Olympian Zeus
historian Menelaos Charalabidis pauses in front of a drab apartment building
is riddled with bullet holes made by heavy machine gun fire
The marks have been stubbornly preserved for 80 years
as the final stages of World War II unfolded
Allies turned on each other as Europe’s boundaries were already being redrawn by the war’s ultimate winners
British troops and the new Greek government battled communist-led World War II resistance fighters in a bloody five-week confrontation that raged across the city
“Athens was turned into a battlefield for 33 days
and thousands of victims,” Charalabidis said
“There were regular operations from all parts of the military: land army
even British ships bombarding parts of Athens.”
Winston Churchill visited Athens at Christmas before British forces prevailed
extended a lasting legacy of violent political division and a reluctance to confront the past
has organized tours of the urban battle sites and the little that remains to commemorate them: Pockmarked walls and chipped surfaces that still exist on a handful of buildings around Athens
“Greek society must reckon with its history
a once impoverished hillside district of Athens
earned the wartime nickname of “Little Stalingrad” for its concentration of resistance fighters
and witnessed some of the most ferocious fighting in December 1944
grew up there on stories of the battles: Rebel fighters throwing up barricades with debris from artillery shelling
low-flying British bombers and intense exchanges of machine-gun and mortar fire
one blowing a hole in the roof of his grandfather’s home
a row of apartment blocks still display the damage from 1944 and fading slogans of defiance written by the rebels in red paint
Kontostavlos supports a local campaign to give protected status as a wartime monument
“Over 20% of the district’s homes were destroyed
and the residents found themselves in a very dire situation … These were
The December uprising was triggered by a failure to reach an agreement with resistance groups to disarm and about what a post-war government would look like
It cost an estimated 5,000 lives and eventually triggered the longer and bloodier Greek Civil War in 1946-49
A debate over the Athens battle’s legacy remains fraught in part due to the involvement of armed groups of Nazi collaborators
Seeking to reinvent their roles and evade fatal retribution
they zealously fought communist-backed rebels and opposed reconciliation efforts
even among professional historians,” Roderick Beaton
a professor of Greek history at King’s College in London
“Some still hold to the narrative put about by the winning side afterward
that the communists had been intent on seizing power,” he said
For others it “showed the Greek people reclaiming their own self-determination in the face of former collaborators with the Nazis and the British who had replaced them as an occupying power.”
author of the book “Greece: Biography of a Modern Nation,” the battle was less about Cold War tensions than the catastrophic effects of wartime occupation
the tragic events … in Athens were an accident waiting to happen
There was no plan for an armed uprising by the left
but neither was there a right-wing or British plan to crush the former resistance,” he said
there are no official monuments or museum exhibits dedicated to the December battle or the civil war — conflicts that were officially forgotten
Emergency measures from that time were only fully abolished in 1989
a bronze statue was unveiled in central Athens square of three towering human-like figures standing at 8 meters (26 feet) tall
is the final stretch to the start of construction after years of promises and planning
it is expected to benefit thousands of residents in districts like Gyzi
serving around 341,000 passengers a day as of 2030
A consortium led by Avax won the tender last week for what is the biggest public project of the next decade
known also as the “U Line” due to its projected shape on the Athens transport map
The final mapping of the line’s course was completed a decade ago
though some last-minute changes have been made since then
with the addition of a station at Ano Kypseli (Elikonos) following a demand by residents there
by 200 meters because local authorities argued that the construction period would have an adverse effect on local trade and businesses
The construction plan has already run into a number of obstacles
the new Akadimia station will communicate with the existing Panepistimio station on Line 2 via a tunnel
which will have to be built with conventional means and not a tunnel boring machine (TBM) so as to protect the historic buildings on Panepistimiou Street (the Athens Academy
Special care will be taken at the Evangelismos and Exarchia stations
with the latter’s construction set to shut down Exarchia Square for a long time
with unknown reactions in a notoriously volatile neighborhood
the original route had to be changed as there is supposed to be an underground stream in the area
though no one seems to know exactly where it flows
The line’s will have a single tunnel for both directions instead of two
as well as glass partitions between the platform and the train
Of the 12.8 kilometers covered by the new line
10.3 km will be constructed with a TBM and the rest with conventional methods
Line 4 will meet with lines 2 and 3 at two stations
In a surprising turn of events at Stadium of Kaisariani
AEK found themselves settling for a 1-1 draw against Kifisia during the 10th round of the Super League
The result sees AEK falling behind by four points from the top of the league
where Panathinaikos currently holds 25 points
The match unfolded with AEK initially taking the lead due to an own goal by Morgan Schneiderlin in the 58th minute
with the ball deflecting off Schneiderlin’s leg and ending up in the net
capitalizing on their opponent’s numerous missed opportunities
This marked the third draw for the “yellow and blacks,” who have accumulated 21 points from their ten matches
AEK seemingly found the net through Amrabat
but he was ruled offside by the assistant referee
The Union protested for a penalty on Livai Garcia earlier in the phase
AEK pushed for a win and missed another significant opportunity when
Kifisia (Giannis Anastasiou): Anagnostopoulos
With Andraz Sporar scoring in the 90th minute
Panathinaikos managed to “break” the resilient Lamia with a 2-1 victory at the Athanasios Diakos Stadium
marking the opening of the 10th round of the Super League
In a moment when the “greens” were playing with ten men after Arao’s expulsion
the Slovenian striker became the “savior” with a header
Mladenovic had impressively given the lead to Panathinaikos in the 31st minute
while Lamia equalized in the 64th minute with Karlitos
Panathinaikos entered yet another match with high intensity
Ioannidis showcased an impressive individual effort
a left-footed shot hitting the left post of Kosellef’s goal
followed by Mladenovic’s long-range shot going wide of the target
Lamia responded with a significant opportunity of their own
Karlitos “broke” the ball to Tsiloulis
who placed it on the right post of Brignoli’s goal
the Italian goalkeeper of “trifilios” had a crucial save on Karlitos’ shot
Panathinaikos launched a quick counter-attack
who was brought down inside the box by Kosellef
but sent the ball over the crossbar in the 90’+8′
with Manouhos blowing the final whistle right after the game’s end
as Panathinaikos secured a crucial victory
Results and scorers from the 10th round of the Super League:

Even though discussions regarding Athens Metro Line 4 revolve around the auction of the first section -from Alsos Veikou to Goudi-Attiko Metro has already started preparing its plans for the future sections of the Line, according to ypodomes.com
studies are being carried out for the next 3 development stages of the Line
will create a 30-km-long line and 33 stations
Line 4 will be starting from start from Perissos and will be ending at Athens-Thessaloniki motorway axis (near Lykovrisi) and will also have a branch from Evangelismos to Ano Ilioupoli
The total cost of the line is estimated at 3.3bn euros
regards the first "mature" section between Alsos Veikou and Goudi
Following planning the first part of the line
there will be three more auctions to complete it
The next auction is expected to include the northern section of the line (i.e
Goudi-Maroussi-Ethniki Odos) with an extra 15 km and 11 stations
These will be: KATECHAKI (connection with Line 3)
PARADEISOS (connection with the Suburban Railway)
LYKOVRISI and Ethniki Odos (National Motorway)
The second project regards the completion of the western section
with 2 km and 2 stations: PERISSOS (connection with Line 1 and Ano Galatsi)
the plan provides for a branch to the southern suburbs
with a line of 4 km and 3 stations (KAISARIANI
This particular project is considered to be more demanding as it will probably be the first section of a completely new line of Athens Metro
meaning that EVANGELISMOS will be the connection station with the main line
The problem for the implementation of these extensions is the lack of funding
since the first segment from Alsos Veikou to Goudi is the only one to have been included in NSRF 2014-2020
