A 17-year-old Polish national has been arrested in Katerini
over the brutal murder of a woman in his home country last week
the teenager – who was visiting Greece as part of a tour group – is accused of dragging a woman into a carpentry workshop on April 23 in a town in northeastern Poland
where he allegedly struck her repeatedly with an axe or hammer
Polish authorities say he then poured an unknown chemical substance on her body
and disposed of the remains in a plastic garbage bin
An international arrest warrant had been issued by Polish prosecutors
and the suspect was located and detained by Greek police after being identified
He is expected to appear before the Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor to initiate extradition proceedings in response to the Polish request

COLUMBIA - Two mid-Missouri athletes are gearing up to compete in the Katerini Beach Wrestling World Series competition next month in Greece
KRCG-13 met with the pair to learn what all beach wrestling entails and their upcoming competition
It hasn’t been an easy journey for Ty Loethen and Jayden Keller
in a month where they will represent Team USA in the Beach Wrestling World Series competition
a former NCAA all-American wrestler at the University of Central Missouri needed a major reconstructive knee surgery following his college wrestling career
where many doctors believed his drive to compete and wrestle would soon be over
if your dream is to go and do big things and be at this world stage
I took four years off; I would say quote retired
And then I saw a YouTube video as simple as that
The same goes for one of Loethen’s students
Jayden Keller a student at Brookfield High School
Keller who has wrestled her entire childhood is now a trailblazer in the sport she grew up loving
“I used to always wrestle boys when I was younger
And you would see a couple of girls at a local tournament
and it would surprise you because there were really no girls that wrestled when I was younger,” Keller said
Beach wrestling is the same concept as mat wrestling
To win a match you must earn 3 points that can be obtained by one-point takedowns - -which is part of the body hitting the ground or a single 3-point takedown which is when a person’s full back hits the ground
“Wrestling on mats is significantly different than wrestling on the sand
you can just run through people,” explained Loethen
to go and compete at the global level takes serious determination and training
“I practice like pretty much every day for about two hours
But you know you just got to do it to be good,” Keller told KRCG
The pair say it’s an honor to represent our country and state at the global level
And being one of the first girls my age that get to go to U-17 and U-20 worlds
when all of these people go home to their countries
If you are interested in watching the pair wrestle at the Katerini Beach Wrestling World Series you can watch on the Beach Wrestling World Series webpage by CLICKING HERE once the competition begins on September 21st

By Katerini Manolatos and Mel Lathouras and the Brisbaneians at the Cremorne Theatre
It’s Nana Mouskouri’s 90th birthday on Sunday 13th October
and this tribute to her life and her music was enthusiastically enjoyed by a sell-out crowd
Supported by the seven-piece band “The Brisbaneians”
the band name a tribute to Nana’s band “The Athenians”
the two Meanjin women Katerini Manolatos and Mel Lathouras took us on a musical journey of Nana’s music
Given Nana released over 200 albums worldwide
more than any other female artist has to date
they outsourced the decision to the potential audience
Familiar songs like “Somewhere over the Rainbow”
“The White Rose of Athens” Plaisir d’amour” and “Try to Remember” were mixed with the Greek rhythms of Σικό Χορεπσέ Σιρτάκη
Τώρα που πας στην ξενιτιά and Θάλασσα Πλατεία brought tears to the eyes of those of the diaspora among us
We clapped along to the slow and fast rhythms of the χασάπικο
Evan Chronopoulos and Panagiotis Veneris enticed our imagination to take us to the Greek village many in the audience left behind decades ago
the Dancers and Band gave us a night of great joy
Their vocal abilities were up to the challenge of the great range of music Nana covered
tall with Nana’s hair and Mel with her sparkly dress
The band consisted of two bouzouki players: Nick Paras (imported from Melbourne) and Nikolaos Papdimitirou
one electric bass guitarist and double bass player Dr Bob
a percussionist Dave Kemp and the pianist / piano accordion player and musical director John Reeves
Eddie also sang Nana’s “Canta canta a minha gente” in his Portuguese
Christina Zydi-Lignos was a special guest vocalist
She worked with the children’s choir in Axion Esti we attended in June
a famous singer who entertained us in Greek
The young ones in the audience will go straight to Spotify and learn her songs
incorporate them into their sets and keep her spirit alive
from far away Brisbane to Nana in Switzerland on her 90th birthday
and if anyone is looking for a worldclass jazz singer

Event to feature performances by Katerini Manolatos and Mel Lathouras
Music lovers will soon have the chance to honour one of Greece’s most beloved icons
as a special tribute concert will be held on October 11
titled The Girl from Greece: A Tribute to Nana Mouskouri
Presented by celebrated performers Katerini Manolatos and Mel Lathouras
the event marks Mouskouri’s 90th birthday
showcasing her incredible seven-decade-long career
with over 300 million album sales worldwide
known for timeless hits such as “The White Rose of Athens” and “Over and Over.”
Katerini and Mel
transport the audience back to the golden days of Mouskouri’s music
Fans will enjoy renditions of her greatest hits and Greek classics
including “Turn on the Sun” and “Enas Mythos,” honouring the legendary artist’s contributions to music
The inspiration for The Girl from Greece came from a deep connection with Brisbane’s Greek community
It’s not just a tribute to Nana—it’s a celebration of friendship
“The show was inspired by a family friend
who suggested I create a tribute to Nana Mouskouri
as Nana’s music has always been a part of my life,” said Katerini Manolatos
a Brisbane native and classically trained crossover singer
whose childhood was filled with traditional Greek melodies
A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music
Katerini is now a respected music therapist
blending her therapeutic expertise with a versatile repertoire spanning Greek
She explained that fate brought her together with Mel Lathouras
well-known for her initiative Fearless Singer
With roots in Asia Minor and a love for Greek café culture
Lathouras’s music fuses elements of 80s Greek pop
She brings a rich background in vocal pedagogy and education to her performances
The two musos discovered a shared vision for the tribute
“We both connected to Nana’s music and our families’ unique Queensland connection to her.”
We feel a responsibility to honour Nana and her legacy,” Lathouras added stressing how Nana Mouskouri was a symbol of hope for Greek immigrants worldwide
there weren’t many Greek figures to look up to
with her TV appearances and multilingual records
stayed true to her heritage while embracing a new life,” Manolatos shared
“She brought pride and connection to Greeks abroad.”
The tribute will feature a seven-piece band led by John Reeves
“We are proud to foster local talent as Katerini and Mel bring Nana’s story of resilience to the stage.”

Adventist youth and their friends from across northern Greece met for a weekend at the Adventist Centre of Influence
just a 45-minute drive south of Thessaloniki
Throughout the second weekend of September
youth took time to recharge their spiritual batteries with fellowship
It was the perfect way to end their summer
The second youth conference in the north of Greece
A special invitation went to children who have Adventist parents but who don’t regularly attend a church
friends of regular church going youth were warmly welcomed and introduced to the Adventist church
The theme of the conference was ‘Advancing Youth’ and was coordinated by the Greek Adventist Mission and run partnership with the Hellenic American College in association with the European Union
This project seeks to empower young people and young adults to become the better version of themselves in today’s world of uncertainty
Throughout the weekend the speaker
Miriam Siwale tackled topics concerning self-worth
each individual’s strong points and weak points
how youth see themselves and how others see them
as well as setting up goals for themselves
they were also able to open up about themselves and learn about and appreciate others
and was the spiritual guide creating the intellectual connections between the practical advice offered by the seminar and active faith
The local church helped with the organisational needs
especially by offering accommodation for the 35 youth both in their homes and in the local church building
Fourteen-year-old Maria Daniela stated
when I put a goal in my life and for my future
I need to take certain steps first to accomplish and achieve them.” She also confessed to having “lots of fun and made more new friends.” She concluded
“I believe I got closer to God throughout this seminar
and I would go again and even bring friends to share this experience too.”
a seventeen-year-old stated: “The conference in Katerini included one of the most important discussions about our age and helped me to decide on self-improvement and seek fulfilment of the goals developed at the conference.”

"You don't see the kids at all," Glorioso said
Which explains why they decided to seek other ways to become more personally involved
On a recent weekday at Hawthorne Elementary School in Westerville
the two could be found in the classroom of third-grade teacher Kate Mantenieks.Glorioso
an eighth-grader at Genoa Middle School; and Soisson
a seventh-grader at Walnut Springs Middle School
have tutored the younger children there since January
"They like to have that one-on-one contact," said Maria Soisson
The whole relationship piece of it is key."
The seeds of their volunteer work were planted by their parents
and Amy and Eric Glorioso - longtime friends who in 2002 started the nonprofit
The Soissons have two other children: Eleni
12.Eleni and Zach have also tutored at Hawthorne
the adults - becoming busier as their children were getting involved in more activities - were on the verge of breaking up Christmas in July
the families vacationed together in New York - where the number of homeless people shocked Katerini
"I ended up crying when I got back to the hotel," she said
"I just can't bear to see people who don't have as much as we do
The first project was to run a child-care center of sorts
collecting money from parents in exchange for watching and entertaining younger children
The proceeds were sent to an orphanage in Africa and a homeless shelter in New York
their parents simply transferred their nonprofit to their offspring - who changed the name
The two have since organized numerous programs and donation drives
benefiting mostly Westerville schools or the Westerville Area Resource Ministry

"He is one of the most truly amazing young men I have come across in my (six) years of teaching," she said
"He has a tremendous passion for helping other people."

Greek Australian mezzo-soprano Katerini Manolatos is recreating Greece through music and lyrics
Katerini Manolatos’ talent was evident
her music appreciating parents put her into singing lessons
At that age Katerini showed a strong connection to music
playing piano and the euphonium tuba – a large instrument for the young
But singing was what Katerini pursued and it’s her singing that has connected her again to her Greek heritage
Katerini was always surrounded by Greek music through her family and involvement with the community itself
through endless visits to the Hellenic republic
To say she was immersed in Greek culture and the arts is an understatement
Now she is taking all her knowledge and love for a genre and for her heritage and sharing it with the masses through her production A Musical Odyssey – an evening of Grecian delights
“Greek music is in my bones,” Katerini tells Neos Kosmos as she begins to discuss the inception of A Musical Odyssey
She adds that she wants to expose the youth to the vibrancy that she hears in the music but at the same time educate them on the music and life of iconic artists like Theodorakis
The night is a musical sensation as the singer is joined on stage with bouzouki player Costa Vasili
classical guitarist Paul Chantrill and pianist Anita Zielonka
who will take you on a journey of the artists
but also give you a chance to explore the inner workings of these composers’ and show the beauty in both the music as well as the words
Katerini first performed this piece a year and a half ago in Cairns and was astounded by the turn out
she said all the attendees felt as though they were “back in Greece”
Katerini does so much through her knowledge
has performed numerous times including folk festivals and a concert in Greece promoting the 2004 Athens Olympics
but it’s her work as a music therapist that she finds fulfilling and promotes her generous and empathetic nature
After she finished her bachelor’s degree in Classical Voice and Opera
Katerini went on to do a masters in music therapy
“I’ve always had the feeling that I wanted music to help people,” she explains
Katerini works mainly with young patients with acquired brain injuries
helping to give them the power and skills to get well through music
“We can use music to help with communication and the fulfilment of life’s journey as well as giving them power and control over different things through music
A Musical Odyssey – An Evening of Grecian Delights will be held at The Greek Club in Brisbane on Sunday 21 October at 7:00 pm. For tickets and further information email music@humbird.com.au

moved to Greece with his family in 2007 to pursue his dream
a Katerini-based company that builds handmade replicas of classic Porsche models
Translating 25 years worth of experience in the automotive field
Gaganelis managed to build reputation for his great work and attention to detail
while simultaneously managing to keep the production line in Greece
The process of establishing a car manufacturing company in Katerini was not easy
and Gaganelis encountered a lot of obstacles in his way
I couldn’t believe that there wasn’t any relevant legislation for producing a car in Greece,” he says
“We started from scratch and there was no support from the government or the banks who wouldn’t give us the necessary loans for the business
everybody was telling me that it is impossible to start this company in Greece and that I should go back to Germany
After a lot of effort I finally managed to move on and overcome the difficulties
I never regret my decision to come back and I am determined to stay in Greece.”
“Some of our customers already own a classic Porsche
but on a daily basis prefer to drive their identical spec RCH car and keep their original models safe in the garage,” explains Gaganelis
Cars like the beautiful and classy RCH 356 Speedster in its Carrera
are based on the reliable Volkswagen Beetle’s rear wheel drive platform
sharing the mechanical components with the classic ‘bug’
while the body is made of laminated fiberglass
The rear positioned air cooled engines range from the 1.6 litres Type 1 (45kw)
up to the flagship 2.9 litres Type 4 (185kw)
you will find high quality materials like leather and aluminium that have been chosen with ultimate care
while in the sportier models the cabin is inspired by motor racing with sport bucket sheets and retro gauges
Perhaps the most impressive model from the RCH model range is the 550 Spyder – a replica of the homonymous mid-engined racing sports car produced by Porsche between 1953 and 1956
Based on a tubular chassis developed in-house
this handmade open top beauty has the sound
the power and the looks to transfer its driver back to the 50s
the car is equipped with a 2.9 litres Type 4 engine producing 184kw
which is more than enough for a vintage rear wheel drive roadster with no electronic stability control and a weight of 620 kilograms
the company started offering a VW Beetle-based Beach Buggy and also opened a new showroom in front of the production facilities in Katerini
The future looks promising for Replicar Hellas
