A consignment sent from Northern Macedonia to the Greek port of Piraeus to be loaded onto a ship sailing for Israel was blocked by protesting port workers belonging to the ENEDEP Greek Union of Cargo Handling Workers
The port workers claimed the container carried arms bound for Israel
"Reuters" reported that the consignment comprised 21 tons of ammunition
The cargo had been due to be loaded aboard a Marshall islands-flagged ship bound for Haifa port
A Greek Coast Guard spokesperson told the Balkan Insight (BIRN) website
"The vehicle was transferred to the Port Authority of Keratsini
which is conducting a preliminary investigation."

We have a contractual obligation only to allow the cargo to be transported based on safety rules," Nina Argyropoulou
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs told BIRN that it cannot comments on the issue
but confirmed that the cargo is currently kept at the Port of Keratsini
"Reuters" reported that an arrest warrant had been issued against the Greek port workers leader
In a Facebook post the Greek ports union said
"It's time to shout loudly that we won't allow Piraeus port to become a war springboard
We fight for peace and say no to Greece's participation in the war!"
the port workers sprayed "Murderers get out of the port," on the Israel-bound container
while chanting "Free Palestine." This is not the first such incident

The 10-year anniversary of the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas on Monday was marked with a large gathering in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini
where the artist was stabbed to death by a member of neo-Nazi Golden Dawn
following an altercation in a local cafeteria
The murder of 34-year-old Fyssas prompted authorities to launch a crackdown on the Golden Dawn, whose entire leadership has been found guilty of running a criminal organization
On 24 September 2021 the Secretary-General of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy Konstantinos Aravossis and UNEP/MAP Coordinator Tatjana Hema met with Lefteris Arapakis, the UNEP Young Champion of the Earth for Europe (2020)
The meeting took place on the premises of Enaleia
It was followed by a visit to the fish market of Keratsini
one of several sites in Greece and elsewhere in the Mediterranean basin where Enaleia works with fishers on fishing for plastic
The visitors were presented with samples of by-catch plastic items brought on shore for recycling instead of being thrown back into the sea
Enaleia is a non-profit social enterprise that combines action against plastic pollution of the marine environment with education within fishing communities
“Our mission is to make the marine ecosystem sustainable by tackling both overfishing and plastic pollution,” Mr
Mr. Aravossis praised Mr. Arapakis’s achievements as an example of action by the youth in support of efforts to meet the challenge of pollution in the Mediterranean. He also congratulated him on his recent selection as the Ambassador for the Mediterranean Coast for 2021-2022 (the official announcement was made two days later during an event marking Mediterranean Coast Day
The UNEP/MAP Coordinator also congratulated Mr
Arapakis noting that the prestigious title of Ambassador for the Mediterranean Coast comes with responsibilities
“I am confident that you will be an excellent Ambassador for the Mediterranean Coast who will encourage youth in our region to contribute to the protection of the marine and coastal environment
where the fish market is located on the docks of the local port
the visiting delegations saw a peculiar catch: an array of plastic items of sundry shapes and sizes that fishers have caught in their net and brought back to the shore
Enaleia has put in place a value-chain whereby plastic litter is recycled into high-quality clothing
One fisher said that their intervention has generated a marked decrease in plastic litter in the fishing zones
Another pledged wholehearted support to Mr
“We will remove every single piece of plastic we can get our hands on,” the fisher told the visitors as a blue flag reading “I clean the sea” in Greek floated atop a vessel in the background
Arapakis’s experience would be useful in enhancing and upscaling activities involving communities

Anti-fascist protests across Greece turn violentAPKERATSINI
Greece (AP) — Violent clashes broke out in several Greek cities Wednesday after a musician described as an anti-fascist activist was stabbed to death by a man who said he belonged to the far-right Golden Dawn party
drew condemnation from across Greece's political spectrum and from abroad
While the extremist Golden Dawn has been blamed for numerous violent attacks in the past
the overnight stabbing is the most serious violence so far directly attributed to a member
Golden Dawn leader Nicholas Michaloliakos denied that the party had anything to do with the attack
a hip-hop singer whose stage name was Killah P
died in a state hospital early Wednesday after being stabbed twice outside a cafe in the Keratsini area west of Athens
Police said a 45-year-old man arrested at the scene admitted to attacking Fyssas and said he belonged to Golden Dawn
A knife with traces of blood was found near his car
Clashes broke out Wednesday evening between riot police and thousands of protesters holding anti-fascist demonstrations in Fyssas' memory in Keratsini and another five cities
violence broke out near the scene of the stabbing
with hundreds of protesters attacking a nearby police station
The confrontation lasted more than two hours
with riot police using tear gas to repel youths
who set fire to trash bins and smashed up sidewalks with hammers to throw rocks at police
The clashes left a busy suburban road strewn with rocks and smoldering trash for several hundred meters (yards)
Traffic outside the busy port of Piraeus was disrupted as police cordoned off streets to stop protesters from reaching the area
Greek media also reported violent clashes in the western city of Patras
the central city of Larissa and in Chania on the southern island of Crete
Authorities said 41 people were detained in Keratsini
friends of the victim and residents left flowers and candles at the spot of the attack
The head of a small right-wing opposition party
was briefly assaulted by protesters when he attempted to visit the site
whose Socialist party is part of the coalition government
said Golden Dawn had "violence as its priority and must be dealt with as a criminal organization."

neo-Nazi hatred even goes as far as murdering political opponents
This is shocking and intolerable by any standards
and more so in a European Union country," he said
The rights group Amnesty International called on authorities to prevent any further incidents
"Politically motivated violence of this kind is unacceptable anywhere
and history has shown the grim consequences if it goes unchecked," said Jezerca Tigani
Amnesty's deputy Europe and Central Asia program director
"The Greek authorities must send a clear message that attacks like this will not be tolerated."

two men identified as party sympathizers were arrested for the fatal stabbing of a Pakistani migrant worker
But Wednesday's killing was the first attributed to a Golden Dawn member
and the most severe attributed to political rather than racial motives
"I am shaken by the event," said Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias
who cancelled a visit to Rome scheduled for Thursday
The killing and other recent violent incidents "show in the clearest possible way the intentions of the neo-Nazi creation."
said his party "unreservedly condemns the murder of the 34-year-old at Keratsini and denies any involvement of the party."
"All the political parties must assume their responsibilities and not create a climate of civil war
giving a political character to a tragic event," he said
Police spokesman Christos Parthenis said the suspect drove to the scene of an altercation between two groups of people
Friends of the victim told Greek media they had been attacked by a large group of men as they left the cafe
Golden Dawn lawmaker Michalis Avranitis offered a different version of events
saying the victim and the suspect had initially argued about a soccer match
has declared himself to be a member of Golden Dawn
But Golden Dawn has 1 million supporters," Avranitis said in Parliament

The first monuments to the Greek Resistance of World War II were erected during the years of the Greek Civil War
The first one was crafted by George Zongolopoulos in 1948 in Keratsini
while characteristic examples can be found in Kalpaki and Kalavryta
Their number increased after the recognition of the Greek Resistance in 1982
marking a change in their form – the Karakolithos memorial near the town of Distomo serves as an indicative example
public monuments from the 1940s have not been systematically recorded
“While we have results from historical research on World War II in literature or cinema
the same cannot be said for the visual arts,” says Alexandros Teneketzis
assistant professor of art history at the University of Patras
I don’t think there is any municipality in Greece now that lacks a monument to the National Resistance,” he adds
it was a significant point of contention between the new mayors of PASOK and the New Democracy party.”
This gap is being addressed by the research program “WaRs: War and Resistance Monuments in Greece: Documentation and Historical Approach to Public Monuments
1945-Today,” funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (ELIDEK) and implemented by the University of Ioannina
professor of art history at the University of Ioannina
recording monuments in major cities and regional capitals
Approximately 200 monuments have been documented and uploaded into an electronic database with titles
and detailed descriptions in Greek and English
They are categorized thematically into four sections: War
The database is expected to be accessible to the public through an interactive map and search criteria by early 2024
What are some early conclusions from the team
traumatic part of the past and is rarely depicted,” says Teneketzis
“We have also lagged behind Europe in portraying the memory of the Holocaust,” he continues
adding that the effort in this direction began in the late 1990s in Thessaloniki
until the recognition of the National Resistance
monuments commemorating the 1940s focused on the Greco-Italian War and the Greek soldier
During the era of the military dictatorship (1967-74)
there was an increase in orders for statues of dictator Ioannis Metaxas
which were later withdrawn during the so-called Metapolitefsi (the post-1974 period) – except those at Fort Roupel and Kalpaki
“After the recognition of the National Resistance
the production of Greek soldier statues stopped
and now we have the form of the Resistance fighter with a forage cap
We also have the statue of Aris Velouchiotis in Lamia,” says Teneketzis
“The early works are entirely representational
there is also an earlier interesting case: “The statue of Athena in the Pedion tou Areos park,” says Teneketzis
“is a hero monument dedicated to the British
Australians and New Zealanders who fought in the battles of 1941-1945
including the Battle of Athens (known in Greece as the Dekemvriana)
It commemorates the Allies who helped us and shows that we are moving towards the West
but the coat of arms of the British Commonwealth also features lions
and thus the monument has multiple symbolic meanings.”
The “WaRs” program was presented at the international conference “Monuments for World War II: Memory and Oblivion in the Balkans and Central-East Europe,” held on November 23-24 at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation
As the crisis-hit country was brought to a standstill by striking workers on Wednesday
police raided several Golden Dawn offices in Athens after the fatal stabbing late on Tuesday of 34-year-old Pavlos Fyssas
a well-known activist on Greece's vibrant anti-fascist scene
The raids came within hours of a 45-year-old man being arrested in connection with the murder
reportedly admitted having links to the extremist group
Greece's foremost hip-hop artist who performed under the stage name Killah P
is said to have identified the culprit as he was being taken to hospital after being injured in the brawl which broke out shortly after midnight in Piraeus's working-class district of Keratsini
"They were his last words before he succumbed to his wounds," said one source requesting anonymity
said that black-clad Golden Dawn cadres were behind the attack and that Fyssas had been "ambushed" as he left a cafe after a heated altercation over a football match
who have accused the extremist group of increasingly targeting leftists
claimed police stood by when a mob of neo-Nazi thugs assaulted the singer
In an atmosphere that has become increasingly polarised on the back of economic desperation – and soaring support for Golden Dawn – the backlash has been fierce
Hundreds of anti-fascist supporters gathered at the scene of the murder in the early hours
with leftists announcing a much bigger rally later on Wednesday
The killing comes days after Golden Dawn cadres attacked members of the Greek Communist party in a similar late-night raid
"Golden Dawn is intensifying its attacks [because it is] enjoying complete asylum from the police," the anti-racist group Keerfa said in a statement
Greek law enforcement officers have been increasingly accused of colluding with Golden Dawn
whose calling card appears to be open-ended violence
The vehemently anti-immigrant organisation fiercely denied involvement in Fyssas's death
announced that the party had already started launching lawsuits against those who made such claims
which has 18 MPs in Greece's 300-seat parliament

Both the Ministry of Infrastructure and Attiko Metro seem to be oriented towards a future extension of Metro Line 3 to Piraeus' Western Suburbs
In a question directed to the Greek Minister of Infrastructure
during a conference held recently in the European Parliament in Brussels
a future extension of Athens Metro to the above-mentioned municipalities as a branch of Line 3
starting either from Nikea or Maniatika will serve the densely populated suburbs
These plans of course will become more official when they are included in the expected update of Athens Metro Development Study
It should be noted that for several years the plans of Attiko Metro included the extension of the Tram from the port of Piraeus to Keratsini and Perama
but for the time being they have been suspended because of reactions by the Mayor of Perama who has requested the examination of the possibility for a future extension of the Metro in order for the area to be covered
if the solution of the Metro is finally chosen
it will probably have to wait in the queue for its implementation
at a cost of over 2bn euros as well as the extension of Line 2 to Ilion at a cost of 400m euros
the Tram alternative would be implemented with a much lower budget compared to the Metro
