Rainfall in Central Macedonia – Snow in Western Macedonia
Heavy rainfall occurred in all prefectures of Central Macedonia
as well as outside Platanitsi in Halkidiki and on the old provincial road network Veroia – Kozani
the road surface was covered with stones and mud
These areas were cleaned using special equipment of the Region of Central Macedonia
Snowfalls were recorded in the area of the Voras – Kaimaktsalan Ski Centre
where the use of chains was considered necessary
as well as in the mountainous areas of Western Macedonia
the traffic of vehicles was carried out with anti-slip chains on roads in Florina

Myrina “Renaissance” Otey-Myton produces an annual project
that highlights women of color whose achievements may be less known
In a picture by photographer Myrina “Renaissance” Otey-Myton
sits self-assuredly on the ledge of a vivid red bathtub with matching wall tiles
highlights women of color like Lane whose achievements may be less known
Otey-Myton not only wants to highlight women who have come before
but address stereotypes in images of Black women on social media
which she finds generally hypersexualizing
“There is so much more to women of color,” Otey-Myton says
The H.E.R. project has blossomed since inception, with the latest series featured at the Kranzberg Arts Foundation
But success hasn’t been a straight line for Otey-Myton
who recalls her undergraduate experience at UMSL as not without struggle
including having to send her children to stay with their father so she could finish school
“It was the ultimate sacrifice for me,” Otey-Myton says
While at UMSL fulfilling her longtime dream of getting her degree, Otey-Myton also started her photography company, TJS Photography by Renaissance TJS
She quickly found being a full-time student while also starting her entrepreneurial journey was a challenge
she found life-changing support at the university
“Because of what UMSL did for me,” Otey-Myton says
recounting the assistance of UMSL staff members who helped her find campus lodging when she needed it or food when times were lean
As a student at UMSL, Otey-Myton seized opportunities. She applied for scholarships widely, getting many, and served as president of the Black Business Student Association and treasurer of the Student Government Association
The skills and experiences she had along the way helped Otey-Myton mold her approach to business and art
Otey-Myton likens her shoots to photo-therapy sessions
describing the high-touch service she provides
but also intimate conversations and lasting memories
“We have a team of Black women to lift you up
Otey-Myton is hard at work preparing next year’s H.E.R
Some of her photos will be on display inside St
Louis Lambert International Airport starting in 2023
that will leverage the power of blockchain by bridging NFTs with travel and tourism for the city of St
but Otey-Myton credits the people around her for her success
Her advice to struggling students is not to correlate their bank accounts with their worth
“When you have people and resources,” she says

LinkImage: Larian Studios via PolygonDepending on how you get to Auntie Ethel’s Gnarled Teahouse in Baldurs Gate 3
you might already have the “Save Mayrina” quest — you can bump into her brothers in the swamp
Auntie Ethel reveals her true colors (green) and teleports Mayrina to a stew pot somewhere in her lair
and you’ll pick up the quest if you haven’t
Once you make it past the Gnarled Door in the Overgrown Tunnel below the teahouse
you’ll (eventually) face off against Auntie Ethel in her hag form
To successfully complete the “Save Mayrina” quest
you’ll have to do something during the fight (and then a little extra after the fight)
Our Baldur’s Gate 3 “Save Mayrina” guide will explain how to keep Mayrina from falling to her death and how to complete the quest
After passing through the Gnarled Door
and descending through the Overgrown Tunnel
you’ll come to the Ancient Abode where you’ll face off against Auntie Ethel in all her hag glory
in a Gnarled Cage suspended over a deep pit
There are a couple methods to save Mayrina from the cage
You can either activate the glowing yellow Control Orb on the west side of the pit or put out the fire with a bottle of water or the “Create or Destroy Water” spell
you have to finish the fight before the cage breaks and Mayrina falls
The fastest way to do this is to just Shove Auntie Ethel into the pit. You’ll need a character with decent Strength to do this — and remember that a Barbarian like Karlach has Advantage on those checks while using Rage
but it’s the surest way to make sure the fight doesn’t drag on
the cage will lower and Mayrina will climb out
And then start yelling at you until she runs off
If you decide to put out the fire with water
Auntie Ethel will teleport Mayrina out of the cage and disguise herself as Mayrina
An easy way to figure out which Mayrina is actually Auntie Ethel in disguise is to examine them and see which one is wet from the water
Start attacking the Mayrina that isn’t wet and continue the fight until she’s defeated
head into the Ancient Workshop on the north side of the Ancient Abode
There are a lot of confusingly named items inside
but you’re looking for the Bitter Divorce wand
you’ll notice it has the name “Connor” — Mayrina’s husband’s name — carved into it
With the wand in hand (along with anything else not nailed down)
head a little farther north to find a teleporting Mushroom Circle
That sends you back aboveground into the Putrid Bog
Just a little northwest of the other end of the circle
you’ll find Mayrina standing next to her husband’s coffin
and you’ll have to option to tell her about the wand
and you’ll “The Monkey’s Paw” Connor back to “life.” At that point
you can either keep the wand (and zombified Connor)
she’ll take her zombie husband with her to Baldur’s Gate to keep searching for a cure

When in Greece
It’s no secret that the Greeks can cook. At the first hint of European summer, holiday-makers flock to the country’s most popular islands for sun and saganaki (Greek fried cheese). But head north to the island of Limnos and you can sample some of Greece’s finest produce
at the sight of two towering plane trees and an empty table
It’s almost three o’clock and most of the shops in town have shut for the afternoon
While Greece doesn’t strictly observe siesta
sleepy islands like Limnos prefer to close over lunchtime and stay open well into the balmy summer evenings
This leaves people jostling for a late lunch spot at tavernas like O Platanos
animated conversations mingle with the sound of swaying trees
Diners on the adjacent table play musical plates
shuffling dishes until everyone has a hefty portion
He explains that they've prepared the same food as long as he can remember
Baked yemista (stuffed tomatoes and capsicum) is set down beside chargrilled octopus and peasant salad topped with a slab of oregano-laden feta
there’s the compulsory tray of tzatziki and fresh bread too
but the crowning glory is the flomaria pasta – a Limnos specialty with tomato sauce and slow-roasted beef
tomatoes so sweet you could eat them like apples
The food at O Platanos reflects Limnos’ culinary ethos: simply glorious
Through a combination of quality ingredients and age-old recipes
this northern island cements itself as a gastronomic utopia
Limnos’ diverse terrain and mineral-rich soil provide ideal conditions for crops like wheat
but in recent years the island has become known for its cheese
olives and spirits – the Greek holy trinity
Cheese-lovers will be delighted with the selection unique to the island
a hard cheese made from sheep and goat milk
While variations of these dishes can be sampled across the country
Limnos’ dedication to fresh and free-range produce and its sublime growing conditions elevate traditional recipes to spectacular heights
Honey is another Limnian specialty, yielded for centuries thanks to the local love of apiculture. Regular varieties are abundant but the most popular is thyme honey, infused with wild herbs from the island. The award-winning nectar from Honey Hasapis is worth a trip to the eastern town of Moudros
Limnos has a long tradition of winemaking due to its volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate
So ancient are its roots that Limnian wine was praised in Homer’s Iliad
where it was said to delight the Achaeans during the Trojan War
geography plays a major role in the quality of Limnian krasí (wine)
Wind caused by the island’s low-lying land is thought to counteract the intensity of the Greek sun
prolonging the growing period and allowing grapes to develop deeper flavours
The most popular Limnian whites are made of Moshato Alexandrias grapes from the Muscat family; they’re typically light and aromatic
Kalambaki is the island’s indigenous red variety
and one of the oldest cultivated grapes in Greece
Wine tourism in Limnos is still in its infancy and tastings are typically in Greek. For budding sommeliers, family-owned Taste Lemnos run English cheese and wine-tasting tours
introducing visitors to the finest pairings the island has to offer
Traditional spirits like ouzo are also produced on the island
made in distilleries known locally as lakaria
but drink with caution – their alcohol content is typically north of 40%
The country’s eighth largest island boasts all the hallmarks of a tourist destination
yet its relative remoteness has kept it out of the spotlight
The island is just a one-hour flight from Athens and although it’s not as ferry-friendly as the Cyclades
a fishing-port capital in the shadow of a castle
rolling sand dunes and volcanic formations – Limnos is a showstopper
The beaches of Thanos and Plati are the most popular spots come summer

You'll find Ethel on the road south of the Blighted Village
Help this grieving widow escape the hag's clutches… or don't
The Baldur's Gate 3 Save Mayrina quest is one you encounter early on if you head off the beaten track from the Blighted Village into the Sunlit Wetlands
If you've spent any length of time in the area
you've probably realised there's something a little strange about it
and one such strange thing is Auntie Ethel
the resident proprietor of the Riverside Teahouse.
You'll encounter this quest when you bump into Ethel on the road alongside a pair of brothers who are accosting her
This quest is fairly long and has quite a few complicated steps
but it's well worth it if you want some great magical items and bonuses
plus enjoy being confounded by moral choices
It would also be a good idea to bring the Protection from Evil and Good spell with you
here's how to Save Mayrina in Baldur's Gate 3
This quest first starts when you head south from the Blighted Village into the Sunlit Wetlands
where you'll find Auntie Ethel being accosted by two brothers who claim she stole their sister
This section doesn't have too much bearing on the quest itself
and they'll explain that she's holding their sister
You can try and convince them to not go after Ethel
The better solution if your conscience is pricked
is to turn on non-lethal damage in the Passives section of your ability bar
you'll want to head into wetlands and beeline west
since it gives you a disadvantage fighting hags
your next step should be into the fireplace—though switch it off first
Behind the teahouse fireplace is an illusory wall
so sneak through avoiding Ethel spotting you
and take the stairs down into the Overgrown Tunnels
Grab a Whispering Mask from the table(Image credit: Larian)Cast Protection from Evil and Good then equip it to pass through the wall(Image credit: Larian)After you've jumped through the waterfall
keep making your way down(Image credit: Larian)Now
but most of it is just info about the hag's various victims and evil bargains
The most important item to grab is the Whispering Mask from the table
Here are the steps to progress through the tunnels:
Before you go too far forward and trigger the confrontation with the hag
you can actually sneak around to the right of the hole and into the Acrid Workshop
and a Mushroom Circle that will teleport you back outside if you want to camp and rest before this boss fight
Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals
Try using invisibility to lower the cage before you start the fight(Image credit: Larian)If you spare her Ethel grants you a +1 in any ability(Image credit: Larian)Once the hag is gone you can rescue her victims in the Overgrown Tunnels(Image credit: Larian)When you trigger the confrontation with the hag
she'll immediately set Mayrina's cage on fire and you'll have a limited time to get to the Control Orb to lower it and let her out
It's far better to sneak up to the Control Orb or use Invisibility and lower it before the fight begins
so you only have to worry about killing Ethel
here are important tips and stages to remember:
offering you a gift in exchange for sparing her and letting her have Mayrina
you'll get a piece of Ethel's hair that adds +1 to an ability score
You can also convince her to leave you with the gift and Mayrina
and since these skill checks have no negative consequences
I'd suggest you do them unless you really want the hag dead
you really shouldn't let her go with the hag
You can also use Speak with Dead on the hag after you've killed her
just in case you want to rub salt in the wound by asking who killed her
You can also go and rescue the people the hag was tormenting in the first room of the Overgrown Tunnels once she's gone
You can find Bitter Divorce in the Acrid Workshop(Image credit: Larian)You can choose to raise Mayrina's husband for her
or keep him as your thrall(Image credit: Larian)After you talk to Mayrina
she'll reveal that she was going to give her baby to the hag in exchange for bringing her husband back from the dead
She'll leave and go to her husband's coffin behind the teahouse
which you can get to by teleporting through that Mushroom Circle from before
The solution to helping Mayrina is the Bitter Divorce wand you can find in the Acrid Workshop on the table.
you'll be presented with a series of choices:
but presumably Mayrina's quest will continue in Baldur's Gate if you let her leave with her husband
so if you want to keep going with the quest

On my first walk through the village of Kontopouli, the roosters are crowing. A sleepy donkey lies next to a chicken in a fenced-in field. The pomegranate trees on the narrow streets are weighted down, nearly ready for harvest. The fish man — with his freshly caught calamari and silvery sardines, which we’ll eat later, bones and all — is about to make his rounds to the local housewives. And the Hrysafi bakery
with its warm and flaky cinnamon-sprinkled bougatsa pastries
I meander up the narrow streets to the top of the hilly town
which a turboprop plane had carried me over at dusk the day before on the hourlong connecting flight from Athens
After two months of teaching summer school in humid New York City in record high temperatures
And the island of Lemnos — though it feels just as hot during my visit — seems like the perfect place for it
Lemnos (Limnos to the Greeks) is what Greece once was before throngs of tourists invaded
and some were surprised by $500 bills for cocktails and snacks
It is nearly as deserted and peaceful as when American author Henry Miller first came to the Aegean and Ionian islands back in the 1930s
Miller fell deeply in love with Greece and wrote about it in The Colossus of Maroussi
I know that light is holy: Greece is a holy land to me.”
I’m here to spend a week exploring this undiscovered bright spot
but with hidden luxury rentals and incredible restaurants
where the only tourists are those few surfers camping at Keros or the vacationing descendants of Greeks who emigrated from here long ago to settle in the United States
unwanted son Hephaestus from the top of Mount Olympus to Lemnos island
But he survived — injured and with his telltale limp — and would go on to become the god of fire
a craftsman and blacksmith responsible for Achilles’ armor and Hermes’ winged helmet
My friend Elaine has invited me to stay with her at her home on the northeast side of the island in the village of Kontopouli
just 10 minutes from where the mythical Hephaestus set up his first forge at the foot of Mount Mosychlos
Elaine was born in Greece but raised in New York
then returned every summer with her own children
she’s visiting with her grown daughter and infant grandson
After years of promising to visit Elaine’s family homestead on Lemnos — a small
peach-colored stone house where her father lived until leaving for America in his teens — I’ve finally arrived
worn out and in need of rest on the island’s peaceful shores
The options of things to do while we’re here together are all appealing: guided bus tours to the sand dunes of the local desert, Pachies Ammoudies; to the famous church with no roof, Panagia Kakaviotissa; and to the ancient temple in Hephaestia. We could even hop on a roundtrip ferry ride to Turkey
like a low-lying storm cloud on the horizon
and tour Gallipoli (far from where the deadly earthquakes struck in February)
I’m ready for an adventure and excited to see the local attractions
But my knees hurt from standing in class day after day
I tell Elaine that I want to go to the beach
We take the seven-minute drive to the local lido (or beach concession) at Keros
where reggae is playing and free beach chairs and umbrellas sit empty and waiting
There’s a trampoline for the kids and a volleyball net
but everyone is too relaxed to even use them
Whenever I get too hot in the 90-plus heat
we drive 10 minutes west to lunch at Mouragio
We take a walk to the end of the nearby dock and gaze down into the crystal-clear water at the sea urchins clustered on the sandy bottom
then walk past the fishing boats that have likely just caught our lunch
Our calamari are lightly fried and so fresh they melt in my mouth
rubber-band-like cousins in the United States
and garlic and cucumbers from nearby farms
“Farm to table was kind of invented here,” says Elaine
A whole fish — fagri (red porgy) — is flaky and sweet
which I will try to re-create back in New York
The restaurant’s Greek owner, Stella, lived in Miami for several years but returned home to run this place. A green copper statue of a Lemnian woman — an Amazon — holding a sword stands near the restaurant
Lemnian women are known for their fierce nature
having murdered all the men centuries ago for cheating on them with Thracian slaves — according to legend
“Do you miss Miami?” Elaine asks Stella in Greek as she brings us the check — a mere $53
looking out into beautiful Kotsinas harbor
its waters a steady gradation of a half dozen blues
a miracle healer whose name in Greek means “glowing with joy.” People once took their sick donkeys and other farm animals here for its healing clay
Past the white and blue dollhouse of a shrine
down a long flight of rocky stairs to the beach
we find four rectangular outdoor baths filled with muddied sea water
“Just rub it on whatever hurts,” Elaine instructs
the sea’s edge is covered in flat rocks of various sizes
“Take one of the rocks and place it on your head,” she says
“If you make it to the top of the stairs without it falling off
you can place it in the shrine and make a wish.” I select a stone the size of an iPhone and walking slowly
I place it in the little blue and white shrine with its red tile roof and big white cross — a miniature of the dozens of churches we have passed in the countryside
Another day, on our way to yet another gorgeous beach, we stop in Kontias, a pretty village with a gallery that features the work of Balkan artists
Beautiful paintings of landscapes try to capture the island’s magical light
but none can rival the actual scenery we’ve soaked in along the way
Elaine has driven us 13 miles southwest of Kontopouli
It’s impossible to tell the deep blue of the sky from the Aegean as they seem to have merged in every direction
only the curve of the horizon reminding us we are on earth and not actually in heaven
On our daily excursions we make our way farther and farther from our home base in Kontopouli until we reach Myrina, Lemnos’ capital, on the opposite side of the island, about a 30-minute drive southwest. Myrina has shops, a marina, and, yes, a gorgeous beach. Just steps away from our beach chairs, we eat at Taverna Tzitzifies — named after the trees that the restaurant is built around
providing shade for the small crowd of 30 or so (the most people I will see gathered in one place on the island)
Waiting at our table for our food to arrive
we eye the modern-looking bars lining the harbor
A far cry from the crowded nightclubs of Santorini
their mellow dance music attracts couples and young people staying in Myrina’s hotels
We spread tangy garlic dip over ever-so-lightly fried eggplant
and grilled barbounia — red mullet — followed by fava
mashed up and decorated with olives and pickled peppers
two lobsters — brown and spikier than their US relativesbut much sweeter
more like crab — split in half and over what must be a pound of spaghetti
but then we’re presented with local yogurt and preserved grapes
To work off my epic lunch, I walk up hundreds of winding stone steps to the top of the castle in Myrina
the fortress has grown with each passing empire — the Byzantines
Now the only inhabitants are about 200 local deer
Families of humans make their way up and up
The view from the top — after a 20-minute climb — is breathtaking
with the golden sun setting on a stretch of red clay roofs
I visit the local craftswoman — the village’s answer to Hephaestus
taught pottery making in Athens for over 30 years but is now here in a small studio with a blue door and several shelves filled with her fired creations
I simply follow the signs from the center of town
I select one of her plates with blue melted glass at the bottom
and an aqua pitcher the same color as the sea with a thumb print for a grip to carry back home
A strong breeze blows clouds into the clear blue sky that in my short stay I’ve already come to take for granted
thunderbolts flying out of the sky as if thrown by Hephaestus’ angry father
“everyone will wish one another a happy winter.”
when the Blessed Mother was said to be carried body and soul to heaven
women light candles in the local cemetery next to the raised crypts of their ancestors
Athena once cursed the women of Lemnos for not taking care of their family shrines
For those not lucky enough to stay with Elaine, she suggests Hotel Diamantidis in Myrina (from $80)
For those who want to be closer to the kite surfing scene in Kalliopi, luxury safari tents are available through Surf Club Keros (tents sleeping four start at around $65)
Garofalis Rental in Kontopouli can meet you at the airport with a car rental
It also offers inexpensive rental apartments on the island that start as low as $37 per night in spring and $74 in summer

If it is true that each island of the Greece represents a world of its own
it is equally true that some highlight such a strong landscape singularity that it remains imprinted more than the others
which reveals its beauties in a discreet way to those who know how to be enchanted by them
the eighth largest Greek island floats in the intense blue of the northern Aegean
the city on the mainland from which you set sail to reach it
Legendary stage of the Argonauts' journey in search of the golden fleece
is a goal still not very popular if we exclude kitesurfing enthusiasts who frequent the north-eastern gulf of Keros
here it is still possible to find beaches where the only company is the lapping of the waves or the impetuous breath of the Meltemi
easily reachable by any type of vehicle and distributed throughout the territory
Unlike other Greek islands here you will not find rugged cliffs and steep mountains
but rolling hills and gentle slopes interspersed with expanses of cultivated fields that end in the sea bordering long sandy and shallow beaches
It is the same territory that hosts archaeological sites of extraordinary importance
humid areas that have become the winter destination for a varied birdlife
surprising rock concretions of volcanic origin
This and much more offers the island which
And Hephaestus never wanted to leave there
on the tip of Chief Chloe overlooking the sea
the sanctuary of the Cabiri it was the sacred place where the mysterious ceremonies dedicated to the Cabiri gods
great-grandsons of Hephaestus who helped him forge metals
The Italian Archaeological School of Athens has brought to light numerous sculptural and architectural remains of this important site
The Roman basilica and the two telesterions
one archaic and one Hellenistic with a long colonnaded portico
To complete the visit it is advisable to bring a backpack
water shoes and towel: a steep staircase leads to the Philoctetes cave
It is a rock furrowed by a fissure from which one can enter the water and exit from a nearby opening
immersed in a truly mythological landscape
here the warrior Philoctetes was bitten by a snake and abandoned by his companions while sailing to reach Troy
Continuously inhabited from 1600 BC to 600 AD
Hephaestia was the largest and most populous city on the island of Lemnos
it was brought to light in the XNUMXth century
Subsequently the site was studied by the Italian Archaeological School of Athens
which still conducts new explorations there today
the Cyclopean walls and the sanctuary have been preserved from the ancient city
distributed within a complex and still recognizable urban fabric
it is considered the first fortified city in Europe
it also became the object of the interest of the Italian Archaeological School of Athens
which from the 1930s onwards brought its remains to light
of a large room equipped with stone seats leads one to think that the city's parliament met there
The famous "Kaminia stele" comes from an excavation carried out nearby around 1885: the study of its alphabet would provide evidence to attribute an oriental origin to the Etruscan civilization
there are the remains of the temple of Artemis
To visit them you must enter inside theHotel Porto Myrina Palace and ask reception for permission to take the lift down to the garden
the foundations of a sacred building dedicated to the goddess of hunting emerge
It is the largest and most populous city on the island
are the imposing remains of the 13th century Venetian fortress
They dominate the landscape from the top of a promontory that separates the town from the city beach
In twenty minutes on foot you can climb to the top and from there your gaze can sweep towards the three bays that stretch along the western coast of the island
The visit is free and it is not difficult to come across one of the deer grazing undisturbed
descendants of the three specimens that the inhabitants of Rhodes donated to the islanders in the seventies
There are two streets of the evening stroll
pedestrian street connecting to the ancient port (where there are very useful public toilets and a large car park valid for any eventuality) and the Navarchou Kountourioti seafront
dotted with bars and taverns for every taste and pocket
built in the 14th century inside an enormous cavity at the top of the Mount Kakavos
It can be reached by turning right onto the road that connects Myrina to Therma: once you have parked your vehicle
you need to walk for half an hour along a fairly easy but still bumpy path (wear suitable footwear)
The view of the complex and the panorama repays every effort
the church of Agios Nikolaos it is located in a panoramic position
on the top of a peninsula that encloses the port
is the small church built on an islet near Pounda Kalogeraki
located in the center of the island on the northern coast
they would be almost ignored if there were no Zoodochos Pighi church
Built on a pre-existing fortress whose foundations remain visible
it houses a sacred water source which can be reached through a tunnel
Outside stands the statue dedicated to Maroula
in 1478 spurred the islanders to resist the Ottomans by grabbing a sword from her dying father's hands and throwing herself against the enemies
There are two war cemeteries on the island
the most important center on the island after Myrina
Indian and French soldiers who died during the 1915 war campaign for the (unsuccessful) conquest of the Dardanelles Strait
At that time the island of Lemnos became the operational base for military operations against the Ottoman army
as a permanent reminder of that terrible tragedy
A wide sandy beach on the southwestern coast along the road that connects Myrina to Kontias
a pretty village characterized by the presence of some recently renovated windmills
A couple of structures guarantee a few meters of equipped beach
Its entrance is located on a dirt road at the end of the long straight road towards Kontias
blue flag for the quality of the services offered (including showers and running water); it must be said that the colors of the sea are not equal to those admired on other coasts
It is located a few kilometers north of the capital Myrina
È one of the most beautiful beaches on the island
is a very long sandy crescent at the end of which there is a beach bar and a tavern
The waters are crystal clear and allow you to enjoy truly relaxing baths
One of its peculiarities is represented by the presence on a dune of an old tank
abandoned at the end of the Second World War
Small sandy and pebble beach a short distance from Chief Falakro
It is equipped with some fixed umbrellas and a couple of gazebos covered with branches
useful for protecting yourself from the sun
in a small bay it is possible to spot some rock formations similar to those of the geological park
in a bay of modest size but well sheltered and not particularly busy
It is located south of Moudros and is a valid alternative to the more famous Fanaraki
With good reason it is one of the most celebrated beaches of Lemnos
with ample parking and a long strip of white sand
well sheltered by the rocks that surround it; and Mikro (small) Fanaraki
It's a shame that in summer it is entirely occupied by umbrellas and sunbeds
It is the best place for a nice swim after visiting the sanctuary of the Cabiri gods
from which it is separated by a steep stretch of coast
Reachable via a dirt road – not suitable for bulky vehicles – it is counted among the best beaches on the island
According to the inhabitants of the island
the one located north of the village of Katalakkos would the only true desert on the European continent
as it presents all the specific geological characteristics of this habitat
with its seven hectares of extension it is certainly the smallest
Walking on its sandy dunes offers special sensations
equal to those experienced while exploring much more well-known and larger deserts
Some of the most spectacular rock formations on the island are concentrated here
To get there you need to follow a dirt road
which can however be traveled without difficulty
Hundreds of bubbles petrified as the lava met the cold sea water
Walking through the geological park you are amazed at what nature has been able to do
painting that short stretch of coast with all the shades of yellow and orange
In winter there are three brackish lakes located in the easternmost part of the island
The Chortarolimni with the first warm weather it dries up and transforms into a fertile plain in which the herds can graze
L'Asprolimni it preserves a thin layer of water which creates suggestive light effects with the sun
The Aliki lake instead it maintains its morphological characteristics throughout the year and in the winter period it provides shelter for dozens of species of migratory birds
hundreds of kitesurfing enthusiasts' sails fly in the air
and here they find a true paradise for practicing their favorite sport
It is surprising to find it in the village of Agios Dimitrios
rolling out the dough and producing fresh pasta which is distributed throughout the island
a rolling pin artisan and successful entrepreneur
to the point that her Plomari pasta factory it is also renowned outside the borders of Lemnos
In his laboratory with a sales point he rolls the doughin fifteen types
combining traditional ingredients with spinach
Kitesurfing enthusiasts know it well: the Gulf of Keros it is in a privileged position to take advantage of the great wind that blows in that part of the island almost every day
the rather shallow and almost completely sandy seabed makes surfing the waves much safer
The beach is completely occupied by sportsmen and their equipment: seeing them fly and jump in the bay hanging from their colorful sails is a truly extraordinary sight
To reach the port of Igoumenitsa from Italy there are numerous options: the main ports of embarkation are Ancona
On the island of Lemnos There are no real campsites
In the gulf of Keros two spartan structures host campers and guarantee minimum services
The closest to the idea of camping is the Kite Keros (camper plus two people 12 euros
It has built-in services and offers the opportunity to empty black and gray water even if you don't stay overnight in the structure (at a cost of 2 euros)
Below is a list of places chosen by the author of the service to stay overnight safely and in compliance with the rules of civil coexistence

The National Union of Greek Australian Students (NUGAS) has undergone many changes over its 51 years of operation
however one thing remains the same; it’s ability to bring Greeks from all walks of life together
NUGAS unveiled a connection deeper than what they had expected
Through ice-breakers and introductory conversations in the inaugural NUGAS meeting
the trio discovered they have a shared heritage from the island of Lemnos
Ms Robotis’ grandparents on her father’s side first migrated from Lemnos to Australia 60 years ago on the Greek ship ‘Patris’, with the aim of establishing an imperishable and incredible life for generations to follow
they resided in different suburbs throughout Victoria
They began working in factories to obtain a source of income
yet progressive environment,” she explained
I have admired all that they have achieved and all that they have risked throughout their lives
to ensure future generations live a life filled with opportunities and never-ending success.”
READ MORE: NUGAS welcomes new committee, with hopes to reconnect with Alumni and Diaspora
was the first to arrive in Australia in 1964
before his grandfather Vasilios touched down in 1965
they both found low-paying jobs with pappou being a furnace worker in the Carlton and United Breweries and yiayia becoming a machine worker
Through mutual friends and a shared bond for their Lemnian homeland
my grandparents were soon married and established in Melbourne’s Elsternwick,” Mr Battista said
Mr Dasopatis’ grandparents also came in 1964
“My grandmother was born on the mainland
whereas my grandfather was born on the island of Lemnos
where at the age of fifteen he moved to Germany to work,” he said

the three university students found themselves going to NUGAS events before joining the committee
“My first year as a business student at RMIT University has been quite challenging
with online classes impacting the typical university experience
I struggled to make a genuine connection to my studies as I had never properly met my peers or my teachers
I wanted to meet people and to build friendships as a first-year student and as a third-generation Greek-Australian,” Ms Robotis said
Mr Battista joined the Melbourne University Greek Association team towards the end of his studies
after finding himself struggling to make new connections with peers
my parents would often reminisce about their university days and the friendships they made and maintain to this day…A few months into the roles
I have met incredible people and made lasting friendships in both committees,” he said
Mr Dasopatis took it upon himself to strengthen his connection with his Greek heritage
His time at NUGAS has seen him organising major events and working alongside a team of like-minded Greek Australian students
in the ultimate pursuit of preserving and promoting Hellenic culture amongst the younger generations
While all three had their own reasons for joining
perhaps it was fate that brought them together
One of their more memorable encounters was discovering that they all shared Lemnian backgrounds
having grandparents that were born and raised on the island of Lemnos
all three families were social and associated with each other
and given the island wasn’t overly populated
they would often catch up together and see each other at events and social occasions
“Later we came to discover that Marissa’s grandparents knew William’s grandfather and his sister
and were very close friends when they first immigrated to Australia
as well as having overlapping mutual friends who were incidentally also from the island
Marissa’s and Billy’s pappoudes became best friends and her pappou was later the best man at his wedding
Her grandparents also baptised Billy’s mother and aunt
meaning that Billy’s mother and Marissa’s father are godsiblings,” the trio explained
Now the young Greek-Australians pave their own relationships
continuing the bond that started two generations back
we have a story to pass onto our future generations,” they said

The project is funded by Australia and its aim is to create a memory trail – a kind of open museum with various art creations on Lemnos
The island of Lemnos in Greece is set to expand into historical tourism with the Australian funded memorial trail for ANZAC’s due to open in 2025
Lemnos has evolved into a tourist destination with its beautiful beaches
Now the island will add historical tourism to its attractions
especially from Australian and New Zealand visitors due to the connection created with the island during the First World War
associate professor at the University of Macedonia
one of the most important operations for the British in World War I was the Gallipoli campaign in February-March 1915
“This was done with the French but the British also used troops from Australia and New Zealand as well as from elsewhere
Lemnos in that campaign was the “rear”
this is where the fleet was assembled and this is where the training took place
The campaign was a failure – nothing worked properly – and then they returned to Lemnos
where they then crossed over and left to other fronts
Only the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet remained on the island and in October 1918 the treaty
of the victors with the Ottoman Empire was signed on board the British battleship “Agamemnon”
This was an operation in the First World War
“But the important thing is that Australians
regard their participation in World War I as the beginning of their identity
Until then they considered themselves as part of British society that they belonged to Britain
From then on they understood that they did not belong to Europe
they were something different so that is where their national identity and distinctiveness was created
are the places where their national identity was created
The Australian War memorial or the equivalent in Auckland
are considered very important for the ethnogenesis of both Australians and New Zealanders”
many descendants in Australia of people who fought
who want to make the journey to see where their ancestors fought and pay a tribute
“It’s a pilgrimage – they use that word – that the Serbs do in Corfu and Thessaloniki
and it’s either organised or combined with tourism
I choose to visit some places either independently
or I combine my holidays with such historical tourism
This is widespread in the Anglo-Saxon countries and in the rest of Europe
There are many people who also want to pay homage to their ancestors in order to feel worthy descendants,” the professor added
This kind of tourism is something in which Lemnos deserves to invest
according to the president of Lemnos hoteliers and president of the association “The Friends of ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) from Lemnos”
which is already “underway” and has been funded by the Australian Government with $4.9 million
will highlight the relationship between Lemnos and Australia as well as the historical and cultural richness of the island,” Mantzaris said
The aim is to create a “Memory Trail” a kind of open museum with various visual art creations that will be placed in specific locations on Lemnos
director International & Stakeholders Relations
explained to the Athens Macedonia News AGnecy
“The Government of Australia in collaboration with the Greek government is implementing the project which is expected to be completed in 2025 and will attract even more visitors to the island
as it highlights the ties that exist with Australians,” she noted
the island already attracts a number of people from Australia and New Zealand who are interested in seeing the island
“We as a destination have further established relationships with nine countries and we receive tourists from Sweden
are repeat tourists,” Mantzaris said
