In what was described as a murderous attack – and the most serious violence since the extremist group was elected to the country's parliament last year – about 50 men wielding crowbars and bats set upon leftists as they distributed posters in a working-class district of the capital late on Thursday
In a statement KKE, the Communist party of Greece
said: "The way in which they acted and the weapons employed … are evidence of the murderous nature of the attack
some of whom had covered their faces or wore helmets or [party] shirts
With the Communist party preparing to stage a youth festival in the coming days
Thursday's midnight assault comes amid mounting fears that the far right is trying to cultivate an atmosphere of civil war in Greece
Prominent members of the virulently anti-immigrant Golden Dawn have openly predicted that the debt-stricken country is heading towards civil war
a writer who has chronicled Golden Dawn's rise over almost four decades since the collapse of military rule
a divide where people have to choose between leftists and rightists."
Psarras argues the attack in the dock-side district of Perama – a Communist stronghold where Golden Dawn has made considerable inroads in recent years on the back of anger over austerity measures – was indicative of that strategy
"It was very well organised and the most serious incident yet," he told the Guardian
"They are no longer only targeting immigrants in the middle of the night
the Muslim Association of Greece received a letter bearing the insignia of the group and an implicit threat that its members would be "slaughtered like chickens" unless they left the country
Marking the anniversary of the September 11 attacks this week
the party posted a vehemently antisemitic diatribe on its website denouncing "world Zionism [as] the architect of global terrorism"
whose political faultlines were entrenched by a bloody civil war in the wake of brutal Nazi occupation
is mired in a sixth year of recession that has seen poverty and unemployment soar as it navigates its worst crisis in modern times
Recent opinion polls have shown that no other party has managed to capitalise on the growing levels of desperation and despair as effectively as Golden Dawn
Surveys released by the pollsters Public Issue and Pulse in recent days confirmed that the extremists – who recently blasted people attending a "Greeks only" food handout with the official anthem of Nazi Germany – were the nation's fastest growing group and
marginally ahead of prime minister Antonis Samaras's centre-right New Democracy party
which won 18 seats with almost 7% of the vote last June
will further boost its share of votes when local elections are held next year
Thursday's attack demonstrates Golden Dawn's growing self-confidence and ability to spread its appeal
They point to the inroads the party is making into middle-class neighbourhoods of Athens
With prominent clerics also voicing support for the group
commentators have begun to ask whether the ruling conservatives should join forces with Golden Dawn
whose views on issues of public order are strikingly similar
"It is a particularly worrying turn of events that we should now have a debate suggesting that Golden Dawn be brought in from the cold," Psarras said
"Talk that it should end its isolation and link up with New Democracy is dangerous at a time when Greece is going from bad to worse."
Mainstream political parties – like foreign embassies – currently have no official contacts with Golden Dawn
Leftists rallying near the spot where the attack took place called on authorities on Friday to "finally take action" and "erase" the fascist group

Perama Hill Gold Project is located 30km away from the city of Alexandroupolis and 20km away from the town of Sapes
The site is situated in the eastern Thrace region of northern Greece
The $220m project includes two mining titles and two mining exploration licenses
The mining titles are spread over an area of 1,897ha and the mining exploration licenses are stretched in about 1,762ha of land
The mine is expected to have operational life of eight years
Its commercial operation will begin in early 2015
Eldorado Gold operates the project through its wholly owned subsidiary
Franco-Nevada holds a 2% net smelter return (NSR) royalty in the project
Eldorado Gold received approval for the Pre-Environmental Impact Assessment (PEIA) study of the project in February 2012
Construction will be started upon receiving approval for the final environmental impact assessment
which is expected in the first quarter of 2013
The measured and indicated resources of the Perama Hill gold project are estimated at 1.38 million ounces (oz)
Proven and probable reserves are estimated at 975,000oz
The mine is expected to produce 1.25 million tons (mt) of ore with 350,000t of waste and low-grade material
Annual gold production is expected to be 110,000oz at a cost of $288/oz
The Perama hill gold deposit is an oxidised high-sulphidation epithermal deposit of Eocene to Oligocene age
It is a stratabound and sediment-hosted deposit located at the eastern graben fault
Mineralisation at the deposit occurs in felsic volcanic sandstone and andesitic volcanic breccias
The volcanic sandstone is thick bedded to massive
The andesites are composed of reworked hyalocasite
The deposit is fine-grained and uniformly spread across the region
The width of the deposit at the edge varies from 15m to 20m
The mushroom-shaped central part is 120m thick
The gold mineralisation is fed into the system through structurally controlled feeders inside the andesitic volcanic breccia and distributed into the volcanic sandstone
and the rest is found within the andesitic volcanic breccia and conglomerates
The gold mineralisation sulphide ore is associated with pyrite and telluride
whereas that in the oxidised portion occurs in micro size along with quartz
the oxidised portion of the project recovered an average 90% of gold and the sulphide mineralisation recovered 2.5% to 16.5% of gold
The Perama Hill gold project will be mined using conventional open pit methods as the ore body is located at the surface
The mining equipment will comprise of six 33t trucks
two matching backholes and a front-end loader to pile the ore at the crusher
The processing plant will include crushing
elution and tailings detoxification facilities
Around 90% of the gold and 60% of the silver is expected to be recovered from the ore
Amulsar gold mine is located 170km south of the capital city Yerevan in Armenia
Eldorado Gold’s exploration programme for the Perama district consists of 5,200m of drilling at the Perama Hill and Perama south deposits
The programme will also examine the structurally controlled mineralisation stuck between the two deposits adjacent to the East Graben Fault
Infill drilling is planned to be carried out to discover better distributions of gold in the western margin deposit at Perama Hill
Stepout holes will be drilled to explore the down-dip extension of the potential regions at the Perama south deposit
soil and rock chip sampling programmes are currently underway to identify new deposits at the project site

A 65-year-old man died on Monday afternoon after a head-on collision in Perama
Greek broadcaster ANT1 said the two-vehicle crash happened at the intersection of Dimokratia Avenue and Dagli Street
as a woman driving in the opposite lane veered off course
smashing into the man’s car travelling in the other direction
The man was rescued from his car but was pronounced dead at the scene
She was expected to undergo an alcohol test
Workers at the Perama shipyard repair zone called a 24-hour strike and rally at the main gate of Perama on Tuesday following the deadly accident that killed a 47-year-old crane vehicle operator and seriously injured two other workers
The union spoke of insufficient protection measures and unacceptable working conditions
asking for the intensification of inspections to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
It also called for the immediate declaration of the local contract for shipbuilding repair work as mandatory for all companies in the sector by the labour ministry and its application in all workplaces
The causes and circumstances of Monday’s labor accident in Perama are being investigated
the Hellenic Labour Inspectorate said in a statement on Monday evening
A luxury superyacht owned by a Saudi Prince capsized and partially sunk while it was docked at a repair yard in Perama
owned by Prince Turki bin Mohammed bin Fahd Al Saud
was being lifted out of the water for repairs when it capsized
The $79 million USD yacht boasts 11 cabins for up to 22 guests and a crew of 18
There was no marine pollution as a result of the incident
Next Monday’s deadline for the submission of binding offers for the majority stake in Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) is looming
and Tuesday saw the issue of the final version of the concession contract for the port installations in Piraeus
they include the management of the Perama-Salamina ferry
which had been a major bone of contention between the state privatization fund (TAIPED) and the Merchant Marine Ministry
the seafront in the area of Drapetsona is excluded
as are a series of other properties that are not related to the operation of the port
Former Perama and Xanthi chef David Tsirekas is the Inner West's go to guy for Greek food and while he bides his time waiting for his new restaurant concept to open in March
46 in Summer Hill from Wednesday to Saturday evenings when the cafe would ordinarily be closed
Sydney seems to be in love with the concept of pop ups - it probably speaks to our love for new and our penchant for fickleness (guilty as charged Your Honour)
it's a great idea to test out the popularity of a concept quickly and easily
the rainy evening hasn't deterred diners at all
The menu features a range of classic Perama dishes plus some new as well as beer
The restaurant is filled with a good number of Perama devotees who have followed him from restaurant to restaurant
"The popups have been great because they've allowed me to continue to practice and evolve my cooking. In all the places I've worked and filled in for temporarily before 1821 (his new venture) had come along, I couldn't continue to develop my creativeness in Greek cooking," explains David. I was lucky enough to have David cooking at my book launch a few years ago so I'm eager to see the menu
The menu is made up of a seris of small plates or meze designed to share
David explains that he is trying something new
"It's like a filo crossed with a roti" he explains
Taramasalata dip is my crack-well I haven't ever taken crack but I think I'll stick to this delicious and less socially destructive item
dill and an extra virgin olive oil dressing with slivers of preserved lemon
The strips of preserved lemon are a tad too strong and unless you cut them up into small pieces
This is one of my favourite dishes of the night. It's unassuming but done so well. The chickpeas are sauteed with the green chillies
smoky paprika and olive oil and then served with the softest
Belinda likes the tiny stuffed green baby bell peppers filled with orzo pasta with parsley
grated kasseri cheese on top to give them crunch
The filo pie changes every week and the serve is generous
Here is it combined with lamb and served inside a buttery filo pastry
All it needs is a squeeze of lemon on the side and it's eagerly gobbled up by Ringo and Mr NQN
Skate wings seem to be on a lot of menus nowadays
meaty fish that you need a knife to cut into
It doesn't mean that it is tough eating though
This is well cooked and rests on a bed of lemon skordalia with red onion
Lamb shoulder is my favourite cut of lamb as it is so juicy and flavoursome and made for slow braising
It the classic lamb skaras from Perama that is slow roasted for 6 hours and then finished on a ironbark bbq that David has improvised in the kitchen that gives it a gorgeous char
Lamb and potatoes...is there a better combo
These crunchy French fries are served with grated air dried ricotta which gives it an appealing saltiness
There's also a piece of roasted capsicum and an egg on top
You can dip the chips into the yolk for sauce
I absolutely love beef short ribs and although we had eaten so much I still wanted to try these
"The beef ribs are a take on the traditional stifatho which is a stew like dish which its main elements are onions
I braised the short ribs in these and then with the cooking liquid I reduced it into a jus," David explains
The pieces are then rolled in besan flour and deep fried to crisp and are then served in the jus
They're slightly sweet and soft and eating them off the bone always means a bit of food porn action with sucking the sweet meat straight from the bone
There are two desserts on tonight so we share one of each among the four of us. David calls this his version of an Eton Mess. The first is made with fresh figs, ricotta, honeycomb and crumbled melomakarono honey biscuits (made by his mum Jenny)
I won't queue for many things but I will for pastry (never stand between me and buttery puff or filo pastry
And David really knows his way around pastry and as suspected the bougatsa is a beauty
Inspired by the bougatsa shops of Thessaloniki this is the perfect way to end a meal
buttery filo pastry is filled with creamy semolina custard and is served warm
"They are normally served with coffee and biscuits if you go visiting relos and they are hosting you in their special living room," David explains
I finish my piece greedily trying to get that perfect mouthful of earth shattering pastry
do you follow chefs from restaurant to restaurant and if so
And do you eat ribs using your hands or with a knife and fork
Is there a food that makes you go all food porny

Sydney
Petersham has long been known as little Portugal, being home to Frangos, Silvas, and Sweet Belem (which only claims to have “the world’s best Portuguese tarts”)
it’s started turning into a little urban slice of the Mediterranean
the small dining strip strongly reps Italy with new restaurant Noi and aperitivo bar the Majestic – and now
thanks to the arrival of Perama 2.0.
Why the 2.0? Well, this is a second rendition of the original Perama, which was there in the same spot in Petersham many years back. While there are a couple of Greek joints over in nearby Marrickville
Greece seemed to be the missing piece of the area’s Mediterranean puzzle
so the Sabapathy Group thought it deserved a revival.
The ‘version two’ reference is also a nod to the fact that their kitchen serves up a modern take on Greek classics
The 12-hour slow-cooked lamb is finished on charcoals and served on a bed of tomato
The fried calamari comes with a spicy tartare ouzo sauce made from capers
Then there’s Perama 2.0’s signature dish: the pork belly baklava
It’s exactly as it sounds – pork belly
layered between small sheets of filo pastry
And it’s an experience all pork lovers must have
stone finishes and a well-stocked bar at the entrance
You can duck in for a colourful cocktail and some mezze even on nights when you’re not up for a big fat Greek feast
We’ve decided the Mykonos vibe is definitely what Petersham was missing

the Petersham restaurant he rebooted last year
Perama had an unbroken decade-long run of chefs' hats up to its closure in 2011, and by all reports it has been playing to packed houses since its October 2021 relaunch.
I'm no longer involved in the restaurant," the chef told Good Food
Tsirekas suffered a stroke in 2019 and explained its impact and the general challenges of the past two years had left him looking for greater life balance
"My mental and physical health is the priority," he says
the restaurateur who bank-rolled the restaurant's relaunch
Tsirekas said he wishes Elvis and the team "all the best for the future"
He hasn't had time to consider his next move and whether that'll be in the kitchen
but is grateful for decades of support from Perama's loyal diners

He has a lot of experience as executive chef in the Universal Hotels and was the owner of the restaurants “Perama” and “Xanthi”
Ηe is now the head-chef of the “1821” restaurant
Once he started working inside the kitchen of the “Perama” restaurant

His influences came not from the modern chefs but in fact from the ancient ones
as well as the history of modern Greeks that lived abroad

His goal is to evolve the recipes and give them a modern flavor
The Greek chef opened the restaurant “Xanthi” and held the ownership for three years before deciding to close it

Few people have seen or even know about the luxury yachts have been choosing the zones of Perama
maintenance or even construction in recent years
These are mega yachts that rank high on the list of the world’s biggest and most luxurious recreational vessels
At least four such yachts have been at Perama and Elefsina in the last few weeks
such as the 133-meter Al Mirqab and the 139-meter Al Salamah
which respectively rank 14th and 11th on the global list
Maryah was entirely built at Elefsina Shipyard in 2014
there are several other Greek shipyards being chosen by mega yacht owners for construction or repair and maintenance work: The Halkida Shipyards
the Spanopoulos Shipyard and the Psarros Shipyard (both at Perama)
the PrivatSea Marine Services at Elefsina etc
appear to have obtained a significant share of the Mediterranean market
They attract business of high added value and in turn employ a series of smaller contractors
Emblematic yachts such as those mentioned above
as well as Topaz and Turama – which are sixth and 22nd respectively on the global chart of Boat International – plus hundreds more smaller yachts
maintain thousands of jobs in this Greek industry
Greek marinas are another factor boosting local shipyards: Given that the Greek seas constitute one of the world’s top destinations for yachting
and considering their proximity to the countries of the Persian Gulf
choosing Greek marinas as the home of those mega yachts for the best part of the year is becoming increasingly popular
This is also the reason for growing interest in the privatization of the Alimos marina
and for the entry of private investors in the nearby Flisvos marina a few years ago
The well-known restauranteur will be focusing on his health and family life as he figures out his next steps

who will continue to operate the popular Petersham establishment
“It is with incredible heartbreak that I have decided to hang up my apron – for now,” Tsirekas wrote
explaining that he wishes to focus on his health -both physical and mental- and his family
“I have stepped down from all my responsibilities at Perama 2.0 and won’t be returning back to any kitchen in the foreseeable future

Both the Ministry of Infrastructure and Attiko Metro seem to be oriented towards a future extension of Metro Line 3 to Piraeus' Western Suburbs
In a question directed to the Greek Minister of Infrastructure
during a conference held recently in the European Parliament in Brussels
a future extension of Athens Metro to the above-mentioned municipalities as a branch of Line 3
starting either from Nikea or Maniatika will serve the densely populated suburbs
These plans of course will become more official when they are included in the expected update of Athens Metro Development Study
It should be noted that for several years the plans of Attiko Metro included the extension of the Tram from the port of Piraeus to Keratsini and Perama
but for the time being they have been suspended because of reactions by the Mayor of Perama who has requested the examination of the possibility for a future extension of the Metro in order for the area to be covered
if the solution of the Metro is finally chosen
it will probably have to wait in the queue for its implementation
at a cost of over 2bn euros as well as the extension of Line 2 to Ilion at a cost of 400m euros
the Tram alternative would be implemented with a much lower budget compared to the Metro

By day, Plunge No.46 cafe on Summer Hill’s main strip serves Middle Eastern-inspired breakfasts and mezze-style lunches
the kitchen will be turned over to a top chef for pop-up dinners
the Greek heavyweight behind popular Petersham restaurant Perama and later Xanthi
He’s at Plunge on secondment until the end of June
after which he’ll join a cracking team to open Greek restaurant 1821 in Martin Place
“David has been cooking some of his classic dishes from his previous two restaurants and a surprise course from his coming restaurant
travel spots and more – curated by those who know
The six-course set menu at Perama@Plunge changes weekly
but could include a succulent seafood mezze with pickled octopus
mushroom truffle mousaka or veal and pork meatballs with roasted potatoes
Pace yourself for a dessert of caramel baklava ice cream with semolina halva and sour cherries (or similar)
Food is complemented by a succinct wine list
Choose a pinot grigio from Italy or a South Australian shiraz
Or go all Greek with options from the well-regarded winery
“The pop-up is giving me a chance to re-focus my love of cooking and passion for maintaining a status quo of great Greek cuisine in Australia,” says Tsirekas
1821 is a highly anticipated addition to Sydney’s dining scene due to Tsirekas’ cooking credentials and the company he’s in. The restaurant will be launched by Bill Drakopoulos of Sydney Restaurant Group (LuMi, Chiosco
Jim Kospetas of the Civic Hotel and Jye Hong
It’s going to be an amazing restaurant connected with the Russian Vodka Room Odessa downstairs
which will be filled with a love of Greek food and philoxenia [an act of hospitableness and welcome]
We want it to be a temple of Greek food that’s grown-up and mature but not modernised
there’s one item on the revolving Perama@Plunge menu in particular that embodies this essence: the best stuffed vine leaf you’ve ever tasted
which transpires to be made by Tsirekas’ 80 year-old mother
Tsirekas plans to create a platform to protect and promote his heritage for the future
“To my mum and the women who grew up in the villages
the knowledge was passed from one generation to the next,” he says
“Bill Drakopoulos and I are working on forming a Council of Greek Chefs and Restaurateurs to hold seminars and workshops with the next generation
so we can pass the on knowledge about the palate
Perama@Plunge runs every Friday night until the end of June

Where Chefs Eat: Peter Gilmore Really Knows Crows Nest
A 10-month-old baby was among those aboard a boat that sank off Komodo island in the middle of a stormy night
forcing terror-filled guests and crew to swim to safety
No one was injured in the March 28 incident involving 17 tourists — American
Dutch and Swiss — and eight crew aboard a vessel owned and operated by the Bali-based Perama tour company
a Hungarian who requested her name not be used
She told The Bali Times that everyone jumped into high seas as the craft was going down
“Our boat ran into rocks in rough weather at 2am and got stuck
When it started flipping over we had to jump into the waves in heavy rain and swim ashore
We climbed over some slippery rocks to inside a protected bay where we were picked up by the dinghy of a liveaboard diveboat
People were holding me and trying to keep me awake … some of the others went into shock later.”
She said it had been raining hard on Sunday night and two-meter swells were making many passengers seasick
She told The Bali Times: “I woke up to a loud scraping noise
A few minutes later crew members ran onto the deck
However the life-preservers were not functional
“Most of the lifejackets could not be used
tied together and stuck underneath a mesh cloth that was difficult to open
It took me several minutes before I could even pull one life jacket out.”
After the crew steered the stricken boat near a small island off Komodo
it was discovered that the vessel’s lifeboat was also not operational
Then we were told by the crew that the lifeboat could not be used
I left my computer and other valuables on the boat
the starboard side of the boat was sinking
We gathered around the port side at the bow and jumped off
the crew instructed us to climb along the rocks
Danish nationals Anne Katrine Kurtzhals and her friend Catherine were just starting out on a two-month visit to Indonesia when the incident happened
Anne Katrine recalls the fateful night: “We woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of a scream and to the boat that hit rocks; the inside of my stomack flipped
At this time I wasn’t sure whether we where in the middle of the sea or near land
so I expected the worst and I was quite sure we wouldn’t make it.”
She said there was little assistance from the crew as the boat was sinking
“The crew members were not that good in telling us passengers what to do
But eventually we gathered — I had a lifejacket; I heard some of the others had problems with theirs — on the deck and one by one we jumped into the sea and climbed the rocks
Only one member of the staff — Garry
19 years old — stood ready to guide us
He didn’t know exactly what to tell us but he tried and now I am very grateful to this one young man.”
Both women flew to Denpasar and although their passports had been lost
the tourists spent the rest of the night on board the Moana diveboat before the harbour master at the port of Labuanbajo on the neighbouring island of Flores arrived at 9.45am on Monday with a rescue craft
Safe: Traumatised tourists after being rescued by a diveboat
Perama is well-known locally for its low-fare bus routes
and was running a Hunting Komodo by Camera tour that departed Bali last Saturday
declined requests from The Bali Times to comment on the incident
that the company refunded their guests the cost of the trip and paid for two nights’ accommodation at Labuanbajo
but refused to pay for flights to Bali or for the loss of personal items
The Perama guests filed reports with the police at Labuanbajo but were told the cause of the incident was “a combination of weather
the crew not being able to see where they were going and hitting a reef,” said McCulley
She sought assistance from Aryati to return to Bali
“She responded that I should have empathy for the company as they were going through a difficult time
I responded that I found it incredibly inappropriate that she asked us
to feel empathy for the company after we nearly lost our lives due to their actions.”
said he was traumatized by the incident and “very upset about the way Perama treated us
leaving us without any answers or help.”
but not with this company that makes lots of money every day
and coming to Indonesia required a big effort
and we are very sad that it finished like this.”
It is the second such incident involving a tourist boat in Komodo waters in six months
Last September a diveboat operated by Blue Dragon Indonesia sank with 12 tourists on board after it also hit rocks
Two crew members were injured as all on board swam to shore

The boat company is so bad about safety…
I wish all the victims are doing good right now
I used their services 3 times and it’s more than enough
I remember my trip from Senggigi to Gili Trawangan with 15+ people and full with luggages (note: in a SMALL fishing boat)
I also took a video on the rescue boat right after we sank:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w37NLtoNZo
Expect much coverage of the shipwreck starting Monday
Tourist please stop to find cheap trip to Gili or Komodo
they just grab your money and when you lost your life who cares
because you try to save some money on cheap trip!there is plenty ways to enjoy your trip and enjoy safe trip but tourist must not spent money to company like this
I was interviewed for a story in the Bali Times
Also very fortunate it was only 20 feet from shore
Not sure the other options but cheap transport is very risky in most places of the world
i cant beleive that the company didnt care a shit about peoples situations
loosing all their belongings and dont even have money to phone the family or clothes to keep going on your trip. Its not about saving money but safety on ships
companies will sell you excursions that involve risk and do not care about your safety just want your money!
and also its about beeing more humanitarian in front of disasters like this
imagine that someone is drawning or the baby on board
i hope after this the company review the safety on ships
tourists in all Asia should start to think seriusly where they spend their money
hey gili.are you on the boat.when the got an accident.if you were not on the boat, please don’t talk so much.i believe perama is the best company
has a reason to be cheap…We should consider the value of its quality
I took several trips with Perama Tours and I can honestly say that after visiting more than 80 countries this is the worst travel company I have ever encountered
They dont hesitate to lie about what will be provided and safety is entirely disregarded.
