The extensive presence of crickets in the central Greek city of Trikala and its adjacent areas has been a source of intense irritation and unrest among locals in recent days
“We can’t sit outside because they are everywhere
We can’t open a window if we don’t have screens
It’s not pleasant at all in this heat,” Katerina
“The other day we went for a walk and we didn’t know where to put our feet
At first we mistook them for cockroaches,” she adds
from Trikala regional unit’s Directorate of Agricultural Economy
said their offices are inundated with phone calls from irate people
and we expect a decrease in their population in the next period,” she told Kathimerini
“The heat and prolonged drought in the region after Storm Daniel played a reinforcing role in the phenomenon
At this time we are not taking any measures
and estimates suggest it will come full circle and recede,” said Panagiotis Dintis
agronomist-entomologist and head of the General Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the Region of Thessaly
“In our opinion it is due to the climate crisis
We have had two years of very mild winters
The high temperatures favored cricket reproduction and that is why we have the large populations,” he said
stressing that they are not dangerous to public health
is that the cricket invasion is probably an indicator of more ominous population explosions of other species
And this is a result of the climate crisis
as in order to exterminate the fly in the winter
temperatures below -4 degrees Celsius are needed
which we experienced very few times this year,” Stavridis added
He also said people must be careful as the warm winter has led to increased snake numbers
“We have seen more snakes this year and in fact from different species

is an unlikely candidate for a leading smart city – but innovations have improved lives despite the financial crisis
residents had to call the vice mayor just to change a broken street lamp,” says Sonia Sofou
“Now you don’t need to know a politician to get something done.”

Smart cities – usually defined as those that use technology to improve services, increase transparency and become more efficient – are proliferating around the world. Pioneered in Europe, they can now be found everywhere from India to Korea. With more than two-thirds of the world’s population expected to live in cities by 2050
finding ways to make cities work better for the people who live in them has become a priority
Cisco Systems and IBM are involved in researching new applications in this growing field

the historic city of Trikala – population 82,000 – was not an obvious candidate for the nation’s first smart city
The country was in the grips of a financial crisis and the municipality was €45m (£40m) in debt when Dimitris Papastergiou became mayor in 2014
By participating in EU-funded projects and offering up a test site for local tech companies
the e-complaint system has had one of the biggest impacts on residents’ lives
the municipality has received about 4,000 requests and comments
About 10% came from a smartphone app released last year
and issues are resolved more quickly (averaging eight days rather than a month) – plus the whole process is more transparent

The EU project saw a handful of unmanned buses ferry people around the city for six months
Although they got to keep the fibre optics installed for the pilot
Papastergiou admits this last one was more about inspiring citizens than concretely improving their lives
“The main achievement was to persuade the community that there is a change in front of us and we have to be adapted to it.”
Trikala is also the only place in Greece to have supplied Lego and Raspberry Pi robotics kits to all its 120 public schools

maybe we could get out of this crisisVassilios Spachos“This has opened their minds and they have found new jobs that they couldn’t imagine existed,” he says

Tech aside, Trikala was also the first city to actually enforce the 2008 national smoking ban in all enclosed public spaces by working with local business owners and using social media to extoll the benefits of ditching cigarettes – although local bars and restaurants initially grumbled about the crackdown
There were also complaints about the removal of 80 parking spaces to make room for driverless bus lanes
especially when the municipality converted them to permanent bike paths after the pilot ended
Papastergiou recalls being accused by one city council opponent of making life difficult for people with cars
some among the older generation scorn the hi-tech initiatives as pointless
we don’t need that,” says 79-year-old retiree George Kiriakoulis
who took a ride on the driverless bus once out of curiosity
“But mostly my friends are positive on these new things.”
This shift in attitudes is one of Trikala’s biggest achievements

“but they create an environment in which citizens are gradually immersed and get used to IT.”
The city has big plans for the future. Trikala wants to join the EU’s Activage programme, which tests smart houses that monitor elderly residents’ health by detecting movement and food consumption. Trikala also wants to further develop a farming project which uses technology to grow ancient medicinal plants for the pharmaceutical industry.
creating smarter cities is the key to tackling this problem
“Tech is the only sector that gives young people the tools to succeed in life nowadays
just look at the wealthy people in the world,” he says

Trikala’s Circular Economy activities are part of its Sustainable Urban Development Plan and the Local Waste Management Plan
While there is no separate Circular Economy Strategy
these two plans along with two specific plans in development; the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan and the Roadmap of the city for Climate Neutrality set out the proposed approach for furthering the circular economy in the region
Tasks to implement these strategies will be spread across the departments of the city administration
likely involving the Smart City Department; the Department of Cleaning and Recycling; the Department of Social Care; and the Environmental Department
The Roadmap for Climate Neutrality is expected to define targets until 2030

Five years after it rolled out unmanned buses in a much-hyped pilot program
Greece’s first “smart city,” has signed a contract with Lugano-based firm Amani Swiss for the purchase of two automated electric buses
which were acquired in the context of the AVINT program promoting the integration of automated vehicles into urban traffic
will serve passengers traveling between Trikala’s intercity bus (KTEL) stations
authorities said they have signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese conglomerate Weichai Group for the creation of a research and development center on e-mobility and artificial intelligence (AI) in the automotive industry
A revolutionary driverless bus has successfully completed its test runs in the streets of Trikala
and is due to become fully operational next month
The computer-controlled vehicle is expected to serve commuters along a 2.4-kilometer route in the center of the city
which are built by French manufacturer Robosoft
are 5 meter long and 1.5 meters wide and can carry up to 10 people
The vehicles are equipped with an advanced GPS and a laser mapping system for localization and movement control
Laser and ultrasound technologies are used to detect obstacles in front of and around the bus
a multi-stakeholder project co-funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program for research and technological development (FP7)
Similar automated road transport systems will be implemented in a number of urban environments across the bloc
the sensor-navigating bus will be circulating without passengers
The public will be able to use the automated service as of Friday
although the vehicle won’t become fully operational until late October
Local authorities have taken steps to make sure that the bus route will not be obstructed by private cars or other obstacles
the municipality-controlled company which is running the project
has launched a public awareness campaign to inform prospective passengers as well as drivers about the new service
Negligent drivers can expect to be fined for misusing bus lanes
Four more vehicles will be added to the fleet by early October
A family was discovered living in inhumane conditions in Kato Trikala Corinthias
The revelation came after a resident filed a complaint alleging that members of the family had set fire to and burned his car in his field
when the police went to the area last Sunday
living in primitive conditions for the past three years
They were residing in an improvised semi-underground structure with a mud roof
with the daughter of the family even hitting a police officer with a wooden bat
During a thorough search of the improvised dwelling and the father’s car
The family had three other underage children
one of whom was a one-year-old infant all living amidst the mud
in what was described as “deplorable conditions”
Further investigations led to the discovery
hidden along a rugged path used by the family members in their attempt to escape
of two makeshift firearms with modified one-inch barrels and a military-type M-4 rifle
Charges were filed against the four arrested individuals – the father
They were taken to the prosecutor and released
while an investigation by the Municipality’s social service was ordered to determine the living conditions of the underage children
who were instructed to be taken by the father’s eldest daughter from another marriage living in normal conditions
whose case brought this community to light
revealed to MEGA TV that they do not send their children to school because they disagree with Greek education
“We are a community of early Christians
following the examples of ancient Russia or the Amish in America
rejecting technological progress and living traditionally
like the first Christians.” He added
“I call my wife Sister Sebastiani and my son Brother Nikolaos
We are all brothers” speaking to Star Channel
“A poacher came on Saturday night and was hunting twenty meters away from an isolated house
He had trapped a female wild pig and wanted to murder it,” he said
He even claimed that the weapons found in his possession were not weapons but “artifacts”
bows were considered shameful; ancient Greeks had spears
and we do not treat it as a weapon; it is a sign of our civilisation,” added the 45-year-old
The burrow leads to a space resembling a chapel
“It is a place of worship; they broke our door,” she said
and added that “it leads to a larger space that has the sacred place
There is even a ventilation system in the cave “to prevent the images from getting mouldy” from the moisture produced by the ground
We have been here for about 4 years.”
They only take care of their own water and bread
When asked if the children go to school and socialise
saying that they are part of their culture
The couple claimed that the authorities were looking for things to show that they had done something wrong
and found some knives that do not even cut thread
Eighty years after the first trains departed Greece on their way to the Nazi death camps in Germany and Poland
the last Holocaust survivor of Trikala’s Jewish community recounts the horrors of World War II
talks to Kathimerini about the 14-month fight for survival at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps
as well as the 22-day death march across a frozen Germany
The persecution of the Matathia family began as soon as the Nazis invaded Greece
“My family fled [Trikala] for the village of Korbovo [a village nearby]
but my father got sick and we had to return
Our home had been bombed so we moved close to my brother’s father in Volos
All the villages around Mouzaki [near Trikala] had been burned at the time and accommodation had been commandeered for the displaced
we hadn’t registered but it was those traitors
The Germans started rounding up the area’s Jews on March 24
“They came for us once but didn’t catch us
My father managed to hide in a nearby room
they had already caught everyone else in the area who was registered
packed us into cars and took us to Larissa
It was a Friday and we left on the following Monday
The Red Cross came to the train station and gave us food
with one tiny window and box where we did our business
where Bega and her two sisters were separated from their mother
They told all of us that we’d see our parents later
‘They’d make us lift up our arms so they could see our bones
The ones that were too skinny would be written up’
cut off our hair and gave us some ratty clothes
they led us to these sheds where they had bunk beds and a few days later assigned us various chores
My job was cutting up old clothing into strips
which we’d braid into gun cleaners,” says Bega
The horrendous living conditions were not Bega’s only problem
the middle sister was taken to another part of the camp
“I’d see her sometimes when I was dropped off at the big gate near their side of the camp
She had gone through a bad case of pleurisy and got sick
according to a girl who was there with her
My other sister stayed at the same camp until the end
she was looking for something to eat in the scrap pile of potato and radish peelings outside the kitchens
when a German hit her in the head with his stick and stabbed her
Bega remembers the early morning wake-up and roll call and being made to “march to work with music.” “When anyone tried to escape
they were killed and their bodies were propped up with shovels along the road so we could see them
She also remembers the sight of a big chimney that was visible from the dormitory where she slept
“The sky would turn red from the flames at night and it would smell of meat
We thought we’d be reunited with our parents
Some Thessalonians who had been there longer than us and had grown a tougher skin told us: ‘Don’t expect to see them again
“They’d make us lift up our arms so they could see our bones
The ones that were too skinny would be written up – there were no names used there
just numbers – and when they had a certain number of people
they’d round them up and take them to the crematorium.”
they were subjected to standing around naked in a big hall while their clothing was put through a sterilization furnace
The German model of incarceration and extermination was designed to wear down the inmates both physically and psychologically
“They fed us medicine that stopped our period and gave the men medicine too
We could not even practice our religious customs
Who could think of such things in there anyway
Bega also had to deal with the language barrier
as living with women from all over Europe and having no way of communicating with them proved to be one of her greatest challenges
It happened that I wasn’t placed with any Greeks; they were all foreign
and there’d be five or six of us sleeping on it.”
When the SS evacuated the camp in January 1945 as the Soviet army started approaching
Bega and the other inmates were taken briefly to Bergen-Belsen and then to a town whose name she no longer remembers
“They took us to a big building with many floors and they took my sister away and probably killed her
They’d wake us up every morning and take us to this place where there was a big wall and order us to throw rocks at each other
and they were making us throw rocks just to make us do something
She doesn’t remember the date when they left the town
but she remembers marching for 22 days in the cold
“We’d walk all day and at night they’d put us in some field so we could rest and then we’d start walking again in the morning
Those who weren’t scared would go to people’s houses and beg
I remember going to a house on the last day before we were let go
He had some bread and cut us each a slice and also gave us sweets
We hid them so the others wouldn’t take them from us and then joined the line again and kept walking
One day it rained a lot and the Germans were calling to us to give us something
We felt like we’d just die then and there; we couldn’t take it anymore
Bega remembers coming to a village where part of the group was released and then to another village where the other half was let go
We found this big house; soldiers had probably been living in it
We begged for clothing at the nearby houses and then lit the stoves with planks of wood pulled from the beds
where we threw out all our lice-ridden clothing.”
There were five Greek women in Bega’s group; three were from Ioannina (two were sisters) and the other from Corfu
“We decided it was best not to mention that we were Jews
What happened as a result is that we were put in the same group as the workers who had gone to Germany
so we weren’t brought back to Greece immediately
because there were flags everywhere,” Bega reminisces

Dimitris Papastergiou was born in Trikala in 1973
He studied Electrical and Computer Engineering and he loves electronics and software programming
Regarding the involvement in the public scene
he believe that “it concerns a one-way direction
That’s why I am participating in local community issues since the age of 29”
he has been a planner and developer of energy construction projects
Papastergiou is mayor of the Municipality of Trikala since 2014
leading the political party “Trikala Restart Now”
He is also a member of the commission of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) and president of the corresponding committee for “Development
His goal is to develop real smart and sustainable cities in Greece
He rides a bicycle every day to go to work and as a good habit
how would you describe the municipality of Trikala in a few sentences
The city of Trikala is a typical medium-sized European city
with a history of more than 5,000 years and a population of approximately 80,000 inhabitants
folk music – it is the birthplace of numerous famous Greek musicians; agriculture with products like wine
while quite recently as a top family touristic destination
especially during Christmas and it is famous with the thematic park of the Elves Mill
Trikala is internationally known as the Greek smart city flagship
with several smart infrastructures and services
What makes Trikala different compared to the others Greek cities
the community and the municipality we are thinking different in several ways: we enjoy developing and adopting new ideas
which deal with creativity and technology; we respect people and we have provided several indicative initiatives
worth mentioning that we have welcomed immigrants during the recent crisis; the human care services that we offer to elder and to poor people
and to people with disabilities; the support of the young people with free-of-charge courses on technology and access to open workshops; and with enforcement of law that respects human lives (e.g.
Trikala is known as the first Smart city in Greece
How do you integrate technology-powered solutions into the daily life in municipality and deliver government services to citizens through e-governance
One of the primary initiatives that we undertook concerned the deployment of internal information systems that guide all the government-to-government processes
especially the ones that were guided with these information systems (e.g.
we launched simple digital services for complaint registration and for certificate issuing
which beyond service simplification enabled the Municipal services to enhance their response against complaints from a couple of months to a couple of days
we released data and processes with online public consultations and open datasets on our data portal.
Trikala is also becoming the first "5G-Ready city"
How this will improve the lives of citizens
the city of Trikala was selected to host one of the first three 5G pilot cases from the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post of the Greek Ministry of Digital Policy
where a 5G network will be deployed within the following months
as a means for testing and verification of its potential against competitive technologies in the urban space (e.g.
as well as to enable the infrastructure for advanced smart service deployment (e.g.
This 5G pilot project will enable advanced services as well as to install a wireless network that will support both the municipal smart efforts and the efforts given by the involved partners
Vertical connectivity of the smart initiative partners
Please share other good practices from your municipality and explain how you fund them
Trikala Municipality has several smart initiatives that have been launched and operate at a small scale:
Smart parking: 48 sensors are being monitored and offer drivers navigation to available slots; data analytics have specified the charging policy and drivers’ behavior and the Municipality aims to optimise parking service at a big scale under the 5G potential
Solid waste collection: 20 bins are being monitored and the municipal service has been improved; a citizen complaints registration service is being offered via web and mobile App and has improved the municipal service for garbage collection
5G is expected to enable a larger-scale coverage and citizen engagement for effective waste bin collection and process
while the procedure can be enhanced with other partners (e.g
Water management: smart meters enables consumer notification (e.g
The utility provider is willing to scale-up with 5G and offer personalized services (early warning service of network breaks or in-house malfunctions)
Smart open mall: local commercials use a small-scale Wi-Fi to share personal offers with the connected users
City’s energy efficiency: the city measured its energy demands and production under an EU-funded project (InSmart); it has been launched a data analytics project that calculates and depicts energy consumption from the municipal buildings and street lighting; it installs smart building technologies to monitor and streamline energy consumption within the municipal buildings
The above are only some of the initiatives that Trikala Municipality has launched in small scales
either with municipal funding or in the form of self-funded pilot projects
The successful ones are planned to be scaled-up with funding from national and European funds
The tourism offer of Trikala combines successfully modernity and cultural heritage
Could you tell what is unique about the city
Some of the local strengths were presented earlier and they are connected with the long history of Trikala
the strong cultural and music capacity and nature
close to Trikala are famous areas that attract numerous tourists: the holy mountain of Meteora and the beautiful highlands of Trikala
The above strengths have been supported by initiatives that have been launched by the Municipality
especially the Christmas thematic park of the Elves Mill that brings more than 1 million visitors per year in Trikala
we started supporting tourist service providers with technology
worth-mentioning the Smart Open Mall that connects visitors with retailers
and with digital marketing training in Partnership with Google® – under the National Coalition for Digital Skills and Jobs

A few weeks ago we found ourselves in Trikala and Kalambaka
locals are not complacent and everyone is trying for the better
At every step you hear an idea; many of them have already been implemented
we visited the pioneers of each of them and introduce them to you
Efrosino is located in the shadow of Meteora and Mrs Eleni is the soul of the restaurant
and everyone who works there does their best
is in charge of the day-to-day running of the business
everyone was talking about the amazing pies prepared by Mrs
“Let’s make a pie” she says and invites us to join in the process
“Come by in an hour to try it,” she tells us
Despite the fact that Efrosino lies in the heart of tourist traffic
it manages to maintain its character; aesthetically unaltered
because Mrs Eleni puts everything into perspective
Mr Panagiotis is responsible for the grill
here we can try oven-roasted braised meatballs
Mrs Eleni’s food will always come out a winner
They are young and sparkling with creativity; they are not complacent and prove that teams are invincible
Giorgos and Themis Tzelis at the brand new Mirtilo in Trikala
a characterful and fun place that serves steaming
delicious sandwiches and many more brunch options
modern and bright space next to Amberg Square – opened a few weeks ago- offering something different
The square owes its name to the Bavarian town of the same name in Germany
with which Trikala has a twinning agreement
Mirtilo serves crispy pork pancetta burger
it is called il cucinotto and brings with it the authentic Italian aperitivo experience
Enzo Bertocco – the restaurant’s owner- has been living in Trikala for three years now
We found the restaurant somewhat accidentally
illuminated two-storey neoclassical building
The building is entered sideways through the courtyard
an ideal spot to try genuine Italian cocktails based on Italian spirits prepared by the bar manager
We accompanied our drinks with one of the authentic Neapolitan pizzas prepared by Silvio
a Neapolitan pizzaiolo who prepares the pizza dough daily based on the authentic Neapolitan recipe
with fresh ingredients and baked in the traditional
authentic Neapolitan wood-fired oven “Zenarino”
Giorgio and his team prepare daily handmade fresh pasta with the traditional Italian recipe and all the sauces
meats sourced from specific and reliable micro-producers of the province
many of the ingredients come straight from Italy
we take a stroll around the rest of the premises
The Boulogiorgos confectionery makes the most delicious halva Farsalon (traditional dessert originating from Farsala
melted clarified butter and toasted almonds) in Trikala
after telling us about the 42-year history of the business and the contribution of his father Ioannis
showed us how they make this unique halva that is talked about all over the city
grew up in the workshop where he learned the best way to make their sweets next to his father and then attended classes at a pastry school in Thessaloniki
He adds water and sugar to the copper pot and as the temperature rises
continues to stir and the mixture begins to thicken
as it blends with the butter and takes on that ruby red colour
We leave the workshop and the aromas do not fade; a warm piece of halva is waiting for us to taste it
making mouth-watering syrupy deserts such as baklava
Stratigou Sarafi & Amalias (Opposite the main square of Trikala)
which is surrounded by rocks similar to those of Meteora
Mrs Voula and Mr Stefanos have already lit the wood-fired oven
We’d heard a lot about this village and about the plans to create in the near future an adventure park in the surrounding rocks
as well as a 7 km trail that will lead to the settlement of Gavros
One thing led to another and so we found ourselves in the kitchen of Arados restaurant watching the pie making process
the dough is divided into ball-shaped pieces
so that each of them can be used to make a sheet of dough
The dough is allowed to rest for some time and then a delicate stick is used to roll out the dough; the sheets of dough are rolled out so thin that they appear almost transparent
and then they are placed one by one on the baking tray
which has been prepared with the valuable help of Mrs Stella
a special tasty green that grows in the area
Mr Stefanos has already lit the fire and is roasting the shop’s famous ribs
meats and hot pies are already on the table
The experience at Arados was unique and delightful at the same time
Gousios is a very famous chop house across Thessaly and beyond
They have their own stable with a rare Greek breed of lambs
It is worth noting that in all of Greece there are only 5,500 animals of this breed with the University of Crete doing special research on these animals
which take about 3 months to grow to 10 kilos and can survive even in conditions with 30-40 inches of snow
Their meat is very special and stands out from other lambs’
We arrived in Gousios on a Thursday afternoon
A huge fire was humming in the fireplace and another by the grill
The table was set and apart from everything else I can’t help but mention first of all the lamb chops and sausages they produce
curing in the cold air in the butcher’s area next to the tavern
spetsofai (spicy Greek sausages with peppers and tomato sauce) and probably some of the most delicious fries we have ever tasted
Almost twenty years have passed since Apostolos Skabardonis decided and implemented his idea to deal with the production of traditional Trikala sausages
We met him at his company’s premises in Filyra
Trikala and he talked to us about his vision and his need to strengthen local products so that they can come out of anonymity
Among the main products produced by the company
which have won international quality awards
the Karamanlidika based on the classic recipe that revives memories of the Karamanlidika products of the Greeks of Cappadocia
the oregano sausages and the chicken meat sausages
Filyra, Trikala, +30 24340 22389, www.authentictrikalon.com
the Liakos family decided to plant their first small vineyard
aiming to produce quality wines based on the characteristics of the region’s microclimate
who is 23 years old and shared with us his great love for wine
He has studied agribusiness and food business management and has also completed the WSPC
which is one of the most demanding courses in the wine industry
The microclimate of the region is a catalyst for the creation of unique wines for the Greek region
Low yields per acre and careful harvesting of the grapes ensure the best possible quality
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 470 metres on sloping
Vasilis Liakos gave us a tour of the winery and also talked to us about the combination of tourism and wine
the visitor can taste the wines of the estate
the varieties and about the region in general and its relationship with wine
It took just 10 days for Australian football coach David Magrone to realise that that taking charge of Greek SuperLeague 2 side Trikala FC was not the dream job he had hoped
Mr Magrone the chief scout for another London club
before moving to take charge at the north-western Thessalian city earlier this month
He had served on the Tottenham Hotspur technical team under Tim Sherwood (2013-14) and was in charge its European scouting network
He told the Australian FTBL website that his brief Trikala experience was like being in the “wild
wild West” and cited a unprofessional practices that he encountered in his brief tenure at the club
These included allegations that Trikala officials took payments from outside sources to sign some players while delaying to the last minute the registration of other players in case a better offer came up for them or they were injured before joining the club
“I was hired to build a squad composed of talented
ambitious players we could develop because that was my background at Spurs and QPR,” Mr Magrone told FTBL

“But the moment I stepped through the door, I could see the enormity of trying to change a culture which was anything but a merit-based system.
“Two of the three owners wanted me to make big changes to drive the club forward with players signed on their promise and potential. But the existing hierarchy and administration weren’t having any of that.
“It was just an impossible situation and I feel for those who shared my vision of trying to turn the club into a development hub. I was undermined from the word go – I know how a football club should operate and this wasn’t it.
“The issues were insurmountable and when you look at the scandals that have dogged Greek football over the years then perhaps it shouldn’t be so surprising,” Mr Magrone said after his return to the UK last week.
Earlier this year, controversial Sydney businessman Bill Pappas and owner of Xanthi interviewed Mr Magrone to take over coaching following the sacking of fellow Australian Tony Popovic.
Mr Magrone said that the experience in Trikala had not dampened his desire to coach and that he was looking for new and better opportunities.
Prison officers at Trikala jail in central Greece have discovered the makings of a tunnel in one of the facility’s cells.
The Justice Ministry said the discovery was made during a search on Friday in a wing that is mostly reserved for criminals serving long sentences.
An investigation has been launched into how inmates were able to begin digging the tunnel.
The ministry did not comment on reports that a prisoner with a history of breakouts was about to be transferred to the jail in question.

A 46-year-old man beheaded his 76-year-old father with a chainsaw in Tríkala, Greek Police announced on Sunday.
The son called the authorities himself at 3pm and informed them of the crime.
The 46-year-old was found injured. He was arrested and taken to the hospital where he is hospitalised under guard.
According to local media, the crime may have occurred at least two days ago, in the industrial area they maintain on Kardítsis Street in Tríkala.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the crime, as well as the motive of the perpetrator.
According to ERT, the perpetrator, who claims to have psychological problems, told the authorities that he killed his father after they had an argument.
It also appeared from the evidence that there had been a struggle, as the 76-year-old had a serious neck injury from a blunt object.
but it turns out Phevos is a pretty cooperative cat
part-Siberian tiger left his home at a zoo in Greece for new digs at an animal sanctuary in California
Phevos the tiger is the latest victim of Greece's economic crisis
which has struggled to look after its exotic animals in the face of the global financial recession
but it couldn't afford to employ her any more
died in March after an infected wound on her paw went untreated
So a British businessman made it his mission to re-home Phevos before the tiger suffered a similar fate
David Barnes raised nearly $20,000 in donations to fly the 15-year-old tiger, rescued from a travelling Italian circus in Greece in 2001, to the Lions, Tigers and Bear Sanctuary in Alpine
who used to work for the Animal Welfare Fund in Greece
has re-homed dozens of exotic animals in the past 20 years
Barnes was worried that Phevos and Athena weren't even getting enough food
[the zoo keepers] had reduced the daily intake [for the tigers] to two chickens a day
way below what they should be having,” he recalls
The main challenge in moving the big cat to the US had less to do with the practical challenges of shipping a large tiger
and more to do with international bureaucracy
It took extensive negotiations with the Greek and US governments to get permission to move Phevos
Special permits had to be obtained under CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) because there are only about 3,000 tigers left in the wild
Initially Phevos refused to get in the travel crate so he was tranquilized and dragged in by ropes attached to his paws
Staff stuck extra labels on the crate saying "Attention
After spending the night in quarantine at Heathrow
Phevos boarded a plane Thursday for the final leg of his journey — to San Diego
Phevos was already meeting other animals at the sanctuary and getting to know his new handlers
And Barnes is confident that Phevos has made it to a good
new life where he can be given proper care

The City of Trikala and telecommunications company Vodafone presented on Thursday the project for the first smart city
or “Giga City,” as they described the town in central Greece
Trikala is one of the three cities in Greece to have launched a fifth-generation (5G) mobile phone network – on a pilot basis for the time being
as Vodafone Greece chairman and chief executive Haris Broumidis explained
the commercial operation of 5G networks will begin across Greece
He added that the objective is the termination of the 3G network’s operation by end-2022
ending the period that the company began in 2002
He said the aim is to have only the 4G and 5G networks operating by the end of that three-year period
Trikala Mayor Giorgos Papastergios stated that his town aspires to become “the capital of giga” – referring to gigabytes – “and giga apps.”
Asked about Kalamata’s recent decision to stop the 5G network pilot program
Papastergios said Greeks should stop being technophobes
and added that he has obtained a mobile station for measuring radiation
with the data being presented live on the municipal authority’s website
Exploring the great Greek outdoors by car all year round
A trip to Athens isn’t complete without a pilgrimage to the monumental rocks of Meteora, to see the Monastaries nested on top of these lofty towers. Of course the best way to travel here is with an Avis rental
Renting a car meant that we could also take the opportunity to explore the wider area around Meteora
So once again we plumped for a spacious SUV for our travels north
Choosing one from a large range of vehicles that was not only comfortable but economic to run
So we picked up our new motor (at a place and time of our choosing) filled her up and set off to explore more of mainland Greece
We whizzed up the motorway and arrived in Trikala after about 4 hours
we had a little coffee break on the way up
Trikala has a loooong history (don’t most of the places we’ve been visiting on our trip) and the area where the city is now was first inhabited 4,000 years ago
As we found out it got it’s name from the nymph Trikke
daughter of Pineus and was the birth place of the god of healing Aesculapius
The best way to see Trikala is on foot or by bike
The whole town centre is pedestrianised and there’s a good network of bike lanes
We wondered past the multi-coloured mansions in the Varoussi district
and up to the Justinian fortress which features a 17th Century clock tower
We could stay easily have stayed several days in Trikala but our main destination Meteora was only 20 minutes drive and we were excited to get there
Kalmpaka is the main town of the Meteora and the views from there
So we stopped to have a coffee in the buzzy Dimoula Square and then a nice dinner at one of the local restaurant that had been recommended to us
The next day we awoke early to go and visit some of the amazing Byzantine monasteries of Meteora
Each commanded as sense of awe and the atmosphere of devotion was almost tangible
The Grandest of all the monasteries was The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
founded by Saint Athanasiosin the 14th Century
Legend has it tat he flew on the back of an eagle to the spot where it was erected
We also had a quick tour of the Museum of Geological Formations where we learned how this striking geological formation came into being
The rock formations were created around 30 million years ago when the Thessalian plain was a sea
Strong currents created the large rock formations and after millions of years of erosion and weathering we are left with this amazing phenomenon
I do also like the alternative explanation that the resulting landscape arose after the mighty clash between the titans and the Olympian gods
Our sense of adventure unabated we decided to take the long route back
a trickier drive on narrow lanes through the mountains
Our rental car handled these mountain roads really well and this leg of the trip was really enjoyable
a beautiful stone amphitheatre shaped village in mountains thick with fir forests
Locally it’s known as the “Switzerland of Greece“
with crowds of people gathering from the surrounding villages to mingle and buy and sell their products
many of which are hard to come by elsewhere
it’s popular with visitors who come for skiing and snowboarding at the ski center
at which time chains for the car are essential (it’s almost 1000 metres above sea level)
Elati is only 15 minutes away from Kokkinos Vrachos
an organized climbing cliff with 7 routes with varying levels of difficulty
our autumn jaunt in the area was wonderful and it seems to be an ideal for locale for a drive
along lanes surrounded by forests split by gurgling streams
no thanks to the smart choice of car we rented
we’d recommend this trip to everyone
and there’s no better way than to come under your own steam
we got to see far more than the average visitor and all at our own pace
