has been found guilty of domestic abuse and exposing his children to violence after reportedly attacking his wife during a family gathering on Easter Sunday
According to a report by state broadcaster ERT on Wednesday
the man is said to have grabbed his wife by the hair and thrown her to the ground during a verbal altercation that took place in front of their children and guests at the lunch table in the family’s courtyard
He went on to pursue her when she fled into the house
where he was heard threatening her with more violence
prompting one of the guests to call the police and report the incident
He was arrested on an expedited warrant under fast-track judicial procedures
The suspect reportedly admitted to physically attacking his wife but his efforts to play down the incident as a one-off were refuted by the victim
who said her husband has assaulted her both physically and verbally in the past
The 40-year-old was sentenced by a Volos court to 23 months in prison – of which he will only actually serve two – and issued with a restraining order that forbids him from coming near his wife or children during that time period

More than 100 tonnes of dead fish have washed into the central Greek port of Volos after authorities blamed the mass deaths on extreme climate fluctuations
The dead freshwater fish filled both the bay and nearby rivers after they were displaced from their normal habitats by flooding last year
which was followed by months of severe drought
Fishing trawlers have been chartered by the regional authorities
to scoop the dead fish out of the sea and load them onto trucks where they will be taken to an incinerator
The fish came from Lake Karla in central Greece

"We are cooperating with whoever wants to help this phenomenon end as quickly as possible," said Anna Maria Papadimitriou

"The regional governor has declared a state of emergency," she added

Authorities in Volos say affected area spans kilometres and could cause environmental disaster for other species
Greek authorities have started collecting hundreds of thousands of dead fish that poured into a tourist port in the central city of Volos this week after being displaced from their usual freshwater habitats during flooding last year.
The floating carcasses created a silvery blanket across the port and a stench that alarmed residents and authorities who raced to scoop them up before the odour reached nearby restaurants and hotels.

A court in Volos has sentenced a 60-year-old man to eight months’ imprisonment for sexually harassing two female minor volleyball players.
The defendant will serve three months behind bars while the remainder of his sentence will be suspended, according to the court’s decision.
The incident took place on Saturday at the indoor gym of the National Sports Center in Volos while the athletes, aged 16 and 17, were returning to their locker room after finishing training.
The defendant was found guilty of the serial, aggravated and attempted sexual assault of the athletes.
The court reduced his sentence on account of the man’s psychiatric problems.
Lawyers for the defendant, a former guard at the sports center who was suspended from duty before the incident and barred from the premises, said they indent to appeal the court’s decision.

A 52-year-old father of three has reportedly killed himself over a fire at a farm where he was employed, in the village of Agria, near the city of Volos in central Greece.
Local media outlet Mangensia News said the man was found hanged on the farm on Wednesday night, a few hours after a fire broke out in brush near a greenhouse.
The midday blaze is said to have caused an estimated 10,000 euros in damage to the greenhouse’s plastic cover and irrigation system, though firefighters were able to contain it quickly and save some 60,000 euros’ worth of crops.
Witnesses told investigators the man had blamed himself for the fire.

Authorities in the city of Volos have lifted a ban on swimming at beaches in the wider area
imposed after thousands of dead fish appeared along the coastline
Volos Port Authority said swimming is now permitted at all beaches from Agrias
The decision to lift the ban came after laboratory results confirmed that the waters in the Pagasetic Gulf are clean and clear
Authorities in the Thessaly region are to hold an emergency meeting in Volos to discuss the large amounts of dead fish that have accumulated in the city’s port
The fresh-water fish originate in Lake Karla and the surrounding areas and make their way

Experts say the dead fish do not pose a risk to public health and are not a new phenomenon
said the issue is under the jurisdiction of the port of Volos
but his office is cooperating closely with the port company to have dead fish collected and burned
Kouretas will propose that the port company place a protective net at the exit of the Xiria stream in order to prevent the transfer of freshwater fish into the sea
Damage to a sluice gate and pumping station during storms Daniel and Elias in 2023 have also contributed to the phenomenon
The Municipality of Volos warned the public on Friday against swimming in eight of its beaches to protect public health, after thousands of dead fish appeared at the city’s coast and port.
The warning concerns the beaches Soutrali in Agria, Plakes, Anavros, Xenia, Pefkakia (municipal coast of Volos), Alykes, Amfanon and Amaryllis.
The recommendation will be valid until the elimination of the stench and the removal of the dead fish to protect the health of bathers, the announcement said. Meanwhile, lifeguards will be present on the polluted beaches to inform locals and tourists.
The fish ended up in the Pagasetic Gulf after being displaced from their usual freshwater habitats during flooding last year. The floating carcasses created a silvery blanket across the port and a stench that alarmed residents and authorities who raced to scoop them up before the odour reached nearby restaurants and hotels.
On Thursday, an operation begun to remove them from Lake Karla and the port using nets and excavators.

almost nothing would have suggested that just a week ago
the city of Volos in central Greece had resembled a dystopia
with thousands of dead fish floating in the waters of the Pagasetic Gulf
as you approach the Bourboulithra wetland west of the port
a lingering unpleasant smell serves as a reminder of the recent disaster
Here lies the protective net placed by the Volos Port Authority at the mouth of the Xirias stream last week to contain the dead fish
some remnants can still be found in Bourboulithra – dismembered fish
But why did Volos turn into a fish cemetery
“What we experienced was the result of two flooding events – Elias and Daniel – during which about 50,000 acres was flooded
and the political decision was made to drain these waters,” explains Dimitris Klaoudatos
an associate professor in the Department of Agriculture
Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment at the University of Thessaly
He clarifies that this area does not involve Lake Karla but the surrounding flooded regions
the conditions emerged that led to the disaster
“It’s all a chain reaction,” says Pantelis Sideropoulos
an assistant professor at the School of Rural Surveying Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
fish from the Pineios River arrived in the area before they could reproduce,” he says
the environment in Parakarlia was ideal for their reproduction
“There was an abundance of food from the fields and debris
and they found a vast lake of 50,000 acres,” he notes
a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Thessaly
where he is also director of the Laboratory of Hydrology and Aquatic Systems Analysis
there has been intense debate about whether the sluice gate of Lake Karla should have remained open
with the Volos Prosecutor’s Office concluding in its report that it could not have been closed
“The real issue was that someone needed to recognize that these fish would die in the summer,” he says
“The region failed to manage the fish from the flooded lands and take action before their breeding season began – the sluice gate needed to be open
because environmental protection of the Parakarlia areas is a priority
But there were signs that fish were coming down from Karla; the first press releases appeared in June
they died when they entered the Pagasetic Gulf,” Sideropoulos explains
“There was a suspicion that some fish had come out of the Karla sluice gate,” says Anna Maria Papadimitriou
she emphasizes that no one expected the fish ecosystem that had formed in the flooded areas to be so large
and it was like unclogging a drain – all of a sudden
There was no way for the regional authority to stop it,” she explains
adding that they did their best to collect the fish
which were sent to a management company in Larissa
with some being sent for sanitary burial at a defunct quarry site outside Volos
they had collected about 270 tons of dead fish
authorities are trying to assess the damage
He believes that the relatively swift collection of dead fish helped prevent a “major ecological disaster.” “If they had remained for a longer period
there will be ecosystem disruption and impacts on the marine environment – the Pagasetic Gulf is a semi-enclosed system
and there are undoubtedly dead fish on the seabed,” he explains
He adds that the breakdown of organic matter
combined with the byproducts of marine organisms
could disrupt the food chain and alter the population structure of species in the aquatic environment
“There is a public health issue in the wider area; concerns about water quality persist due to the floods
with dead animals and even tractors still submerged – we are aware of this – and now the situation has worsened with the dead fish,” emphasizes Mylopoulos
but I don’t think the situation is irreversible – the fish were collected very quickly
before they had a chance to fully decompose.”
Fisherman and president of the Panhellenic Union of Medium Fishing Boat Owners
tells Kathimerini that those responsible for the drainage couldn’t have been unaware of the presence of fish
“We saw dead fish on the beaches near the port,” he says
referring to sightings even before last week’s events
His concern now is how this will affect the public
Are they from the Pagasetic Gulf?’” he notes
Despite the eerie scenes along Volos’ shoreline
the city’s residents haven’t changed their view of it
“I’ve never seen anything like this before
but the sea has always had a smell,” says Eleni Spathi
who has lived near the waterfront for the past 50 years
“We aren’t worried about what will happen to the city,” she adds
perhaps because the city has already endured so much
Two 18-year-olds have become so accustomed to the harsh living conditions in Volos
caused by extreme weather and poor infrastructure
that the dead fish in the sea didn’t surprise them much
but we expected something like this; the sea often brought up filth,” says Konstantinos Dikitos
looking at the water splashing against the concrete with disgust
“the water has the same disgusting color.”

The hundreds of thousands of dead fish that flooded the Pagasetic Gulf off the eastern coast of mainland Greece in recent days died of natural causes and not of poisoning by an industrial effluent or some other toxin, an Environment Ministry official said on Saturday.
Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, Petros Varelidis, the secretary general for Natural Environment and Waters, said the issue stems back to last September’s Storm Daniel. The storm, he said, flooded Karla Lake in Thessaly, central Greece, making it grow in size and become a safe and rich ecosystem that spurred freshwater fish spawning. When the lake began to return to its natural size as a result of absorption and evaporation, the lake shrank, suffocating its unusually large fish population.
“When the drainage ditch fell below the water surface in the plain, the water suddenly gained momentum, and all these fish, dead or alive, were carried away towards the Pagasetic Gulf,” Varelidis claimed, adding that those fish which were alive died when they entered a saltwater environment.
Varelidis went on to say that cleanup efforts of Xiria stream, which links Karla to the gulf, are starting to pay off and that the situation is now under control, particularly in the seaside city of Volos, where a state of emergency has been declared.

The Good Life in Greece for Less Than $1,000 a Month
The Three Best Things About Living in Greece (and the Two Worst)
Disturbing images have emerged from the harbour of Volos
where thousands of dead fish have been washing ashore for days
flooding both the port and the greater Pagasitikos Gulf
Experts attribute the phenomenon to the thousands of tons of water flowing daily from Lake Karla and the surrounding areas into the Pagasitikos Gulf through the Xirias stream
As the fresh water mixes with the sea, freshwater fish are swept along, dying upon contact with the salty water [video]
authorities have launched a preliminary investigation to determine the exact cause of the mass fish deaths
Under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor
samples will be collected from the dead fish and the mouth of Lake Karla
The investigation will explore the possibility that a substance may have infiltrated the fish’s systems
It will extend along the entire coastline of the Pagasitikos Gulf
the investigation will consider the actions of the Thessaly Regional Authority regarding the management of Lake Karla’s sluice gate
it was discovered that dead fish were present within the sluice gate and along the entire length of the tunnel
While Greek media have noted that this phenomenon is not new and does not pose a public health risk
they also point out that it has never reached such a large scale in the past
The situation in Volos Harbour is particularly dire for local businesses
Restaurant owners are struggling as both residents and tourists avoid the area due to the overwhelming stench and the repulsive sight of dead fish
Many are choosing not to dine or even enjoy a coffee at the harbour
In a meeting held at the offices of the Volos Port Authority
attended by President Sokratis Anagnostou and Deputy Regional Governor of Magnesia
A remarkable comeback at the death saw PAOK suffer a shock defeat against Volos
costing them vital points in their title challenge
The Thessaloniki giants fell 1-2 to Volos at Toumba Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s 18th round
falling seven points off top spot in the process
PAOK opened the scoring in the 69th minute through Mady Camara’s corner header
They held onto the lead until injury time when a ball from Volos defender Daniel Sundgren led to PAOK centre half Giannis Michailidis inadvertently knocking it into his own net (90+2′)
The evening turned worse moments later as forward Pedro Conde scored in the 90+4th minute to stun the hosts and grab a most impressive victory for the Magnesia outfit
The result ensured PAOK of their second straight loss to greatly hinder their championship aspirations
Panathinaikos was held to a 2-2 away draw with Panserraikos amid extremely wet conditions in a game filled with twists and turns
with the “Trifylli” ultimately dropping crucial points to fall further behind the league leaders
The Greens went ahead in the 38th minute after winger Tete struck the ball sweetly from distance into the bottom right corner
Panathinaikos then doubled it quickly into the second period through a well-guided volley by midfielder Adam Cerin inside the box (48′)
Forward Jefte Betancor stepped up for with an important headed goal in the 64th minute to keep the Serres club in the contest
Betancor then won a penalty minutes later after goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski was deemed to have headbutted the forward in a coming together
with the Pole also receiving a red card for his action (69′)
The Spaniard converted the spot-kick into the top right (76′) to bring Panserraikos level in what proved the final decisive moment of the outing
AEK performed better than their rivals as they beat Kallithea 2-0 at home to ascend into second place
Enosi broke through in the 18th minute via a lovely headed goal by defender Gerasimos Mitoglou
The home side suffered a late red card to midfielder Mijat Gacinovic (86′)
though it had little impact as they even managed to grab a second goal in injury time via substitute Erik Lamela’s excellent free kick strike (90+3′)
Atromitos extended Lamia’s troubles with a 0-3 success at “Athanasios Diakos” ground in a worrying outcome that further suggests the Fthiotida outfit is at big risk of relegation this season
Striker Carlitos put the Peristeriotes in front just five minutes into the clash with teammate Dimitrios Kaloskamis doubling it soon after (19′)
Carlitos then put the game to bed early into the second period with another goal in the 51st minute
Olympiacos was spurred to a dramatic 2-1 triumph against Aris at “Georgios Karaiskakis” ground on Sunday morning
with youngster Charalambos Kostoulas striking twice to lead the “red-whites” to victory
The “yellow-blacks” managed to strike first after marksman Loren Moron released an excellent long-range shot into the bottom right (35′)
The Piraeus giants came out of the break firing as they equalised soon after the restart through young forward Kostoulas
who cleverly pressed and claimed the ball from Aris in their half as he dribbled into the box and hit it into the back of the net (50′)
The night was complicated for the visitors when right back Martin Montoya received his second booking (72′)
putting the Thessaloniki side down to ten players
It took the league leaders up until the 90+6th minute to capitalise on the advantage with Kostoulas meeting defender Giulian Biancone’s cross into the box and heading it into the goal
The strike ensured the “red-whites” remain first for another week with the result itself a great boost ahead of their first leg in the Cup quarter-finals against Panathinaikos
The round will close out on Tuesday morning with matches between Asteras Tripolis-Panetolikos and OFI-Levadiakos

The Volos Prosecutor’s Office in Central Greece has launched a preliminary investigation into controversial remarks made by Volos Mayor Achilleas Beos earlier this week.
Known for his outspoken demeanor and hardline methods, Beos allegedly urged business owners during a Monday interview to “get together” and, if outdoor seating fees imposed by the Volos Port Authority (VPA) were not canceled, to “beat up” VPA employees.
The prosecutor’s office will investigate whether the mayor’s statements constitute incitement to violence.

European festivals are the platforms which offer Central Asian films the most exposure”
by Davide Abbatescianni
The Italian juror on the Bishkek CAF Pitch chatted with us about his work as a producer and the potential offered by the Central Asian region
We met with Volos Films’ Stefano Centini, a producer who featured on the jury of CAF Pitch, which unspooled within the Bishkek International Film Festival
we spoke about Centini’s production company (headquartered in Italy and Taiwan) and possible collaborations between the Central Asian region and the rest of the world
thanks to my tireless colleagues in Taiwan who are taking increasing responsibility for the Taiwanese side of the firm
I’d like to start working with Italian authors
and I’m initiating discussions to this effect
You were a jury member on this year’s Bishkek CAF Pitch
How much potential did the presented projects offer
we listened to ten pitches by producers and directors from the region
and the other four jurors and I awarded a total of five prizes
but we wanted to add an unplanned-for special mention
Awarding an extra prize reflects our desire to recognise the work that goes into preparing each project
and the strong desire they have to open themselves up to the international market
which we didn’t only see during their pitches
but also during their interactions in the masterclasses which each of the jurors led
focusing on the funds available in each of their countries
[..] The projects selected reflect the energy of this new generation which is now taking shape
They consist of a series of projects both by more established directors and by young authors
I’m particularly happy to bring to mind Cradle Homecoming by Tajik director Iskandar Usmonov
and Balyk by the young Kyrgyz director Tolomush Zhanybekov
The former is the story of an artisan who crafts cots for newborns according to the local tradition but
he finds himself manufacturing coffins for war victims in Russia; Balyk
tells the tale of a stammering teen who finds the courage and strength to overcome his fears thanks to the platonic love he shares with his teacher
is how different projects can take inspiration from small
everyday stories and characters in this region
who find themselves faced with universal predicaments
How do you believe the Central Asian market can interact with European partners and festivals in future?Without a doubt
European festivals are the platforms which offer Central Asian films the most exposure
And the festival circuit is definitely waiting for film producers from this region
which is trying to open itself up to international markets
I think it will be important to check the degree to which this willingness will be supported by local authorities going forward
and how much of a boost co-production between countries in that region will give to the development of inter-regional projects too
as well as the extent to which cooperation with European partners could provide the exchange of talent needed to produce films with greater visibility
There’s definitely been a lot of interest in possible collaborations with Italy after Roberto Stabile’s visit in April 2023 and the subsequent discussions around the potential signing of co-production agreements
and many directors and participants of CAF have expressed curiosity in the possibility of co-producing with Italy
the first step will be finding the right projects to develop and devise together and
Biskkek’s CAF can act as an important platform
I’m currently preparing Kenneth Dagatan’s third film
which will take part in Bifan’s projects market in Korea
It will be shot in Italy in the first half of 2025 with a mixed cast of Italian and Filippino actors
I’m also co-producing Matteo Zoppis and Alessio Rigo de Righi’s second film, Testa o Croce, together with Ring Film’s Tommaso Bertani and Cinema Inutile’s Alex Lo
[..] And I’m finalising post-production on a short film alongside Venezuelan director Jorge Thielen Armand
with whom I’m also developing a feature film project called Death Has No Masters
We took the project to the Cannes Film Festival’s Investors Circle and we’re now completing funding with a view to shooting the movie in the second half of next year

Panathinaikos has a golden opportunity for an important reset following the sacking of coach Diego Alonso
with the players needing to show a strong response after a lacklustre opening few months
The Greens is set to face Volos away on Monday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s tenth round
with the contest representing a crucial moment in their season as they look to prove themselves after Alonso’s sacking
The players will have to muster a strong display which could prove difficult after the squad travelled to England midweek for George Baldock’s funeral
The Greens will have to manage their emotions properly if they wish to score all three points
Aris will be looking to hold onto first when they take on Levadiakos at “Kleanthis Vikelidis” Stadium
The “yellow-blacks” went alone at the top of the table after last week’s spectacular round saw Olympiacos
AEK and PAOK all lose games (the first time they all lost without any of them playing Panathinaikos since February 1988)
The hosts will therefore be extra keen to ensure victory and hold on tight to top spot for another week
will be looking for an immediate bounce back when they travel to play Lamia at “Athanasios Diakos” ground
The Thessaloniki giants undid some of the shock of last matchday with an easy win midweek in the Greek Cup over Egaleo
though they will be especially keen to get their league campaign back on track
AEK is also preparing for an away clash as they take on Atromitos
and Enosi is similarly aiming to translate their strong Cup form midweek (beating Aris) to earn a crucial win that restores their league form
Olympiacos takes on Panserraikos (one of the giant slayers of last matchday) at Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium in the round’s opening fixture on Sunday morning
The Piraeus giants will be wary of their opponents
knowing that they will have to be at their best to secure the win
Kallithea hosts Panetolikos in a game they will be desperate to win
given their status as one of the only two clubs yet to win this campaign
The Agrinio side has started the season strongly
though their loss to Volos in the previous round will have served as a reminder that they cannot take anything for granted
Asteras Tripolis and OFI will close the round with an intriguing clash on Tuesday morning
with both teams riding the high of defeating a top team
The Arcadians managed to upset Olympiacos while the Cretans stunned PAOK inside their home fortress of “Toumba”
The game is thus delicately poised with the game standing out as a most interesting clash wherein the result is unpredictable
