2025This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK).A Greek island holiday will feature on many travellers’ wish lists
but families may find themselves bewildered by choice — there are more than 6,000 of them
Part of the Ionian archipelago and easily reached by a direct flight
mid-size Zakynthos ticks all the boxes — its southern peninsulas of Keri and Vassilikos are particularly well-served by diverse landscapes and stellar beaches

This and the strikingly Venetian-looking Solomos Square are both popular local strolling spots
The Greek plate-smashing tradition is believed to ward off bad spirits, but families can make their own luck at a ceramics class with Hanne Mi S Sauge
A two-hour session at her studio in Vassilikos includes instruction on how to use the potter’s wheel and make hand-built sculptures
Now that I live in Europe
I love how easy it is to visit different countries
In September, I decided it was time for a solo trip to a Greek island to live out my "Mamma Mia" dreams. My friends recommended Santorini and Mykonos
and I was nervous about them being overcrowded
but there are some things I would change if I had the chance for a vacation redo
I had an overnight layover in Athens
so I spent one night in the city center before heading to Zakynthos
Friends had told me I only needed a day in the city
saying that there wasn't much to see or do
Outside the incredible historic Greek archaeology
I didn't have enough time for the art museums or festivals
While the residential architecture wasn't as charming as what I saw on the island
and cocktail bars all looked worthy of a visit
Once I got to Zakynthos, the energy level changed. I was greeted by the chaos of gap year travelers living out the last days of summer
I had read that the island was a hot spot for college-aged travelers
but I figured it was big enough that we could keep our distance
But despite my accommodation being just outside the main party zone of Laganas
I shared a floor with a group of eight rowdy college kids
In hindsight, I should have done more research on other parts of the island. While some locals told me Zakynthos has parties wherever you go
others said that renting a villa can be a good alternative for finding a bit of peace and quiet
They said that visitors who stay more inland can rent a car and drive to the beach
as most coastlines can be reached in a few minutes
Renting a car would have been a great idea overall
One day in Zakynthos
I waited over an hour for a bus that never came
with many canceling or not showing up when I tried to book them by phone
While I was able to make the most of Laganas
I feel like there was more I could have explored
which were not super crowded but not very serene or peaceful either
I also didn't realize that it was much easier to get to the shipwreck by car
Only one tour company offered to drive people there
so I had to work around their schedule to see it
Normally, I opt for solo travel
But I often felt lonely on Zakynthos because I saw big groups of people everywhere I went — not just college kids either
but multi-generational families and honeymooning couples
I watched a lot of them enjoying the outdoor and water activities that Greece has to offer
Small boats can be rented to sail around the island
take tours of water caves and go diving or snorkeling
grab a few mopeds or four-wheelers and drive around
or enjoy inflatable water playgrounds along the beach
While I could have done some of those things on my own, I knew they'd be more fun with a big group of friends to share the excitement
One of the biggest things I'd change about my Greek island trip is booking a hotel that had beach access
"Beachfront" doesn't necessarily mean you can just walk right out to the beach from your hotel
While my accommodation was next to the beach
if I wanted to spend time lounging in the sun
I had to pay for a crummy cappuccino or an overpriced bottle of water for the privilege
I didn't realize this before I booked my trip
and while most just ask that you purchase some food or drinks
some require you to rent a beach chair and umbrella or even buy a day pass
Next time, I'll read more reviews or even contact the property and ask if they have a beach for their guests
I only saw "beachfront" on my booking website and realized after spending a few days there that what I needed was "beach access" or "private beach."
They knew they weren’t welcome – at least not by everyone
During their visit to the Ionian island of Zakynthos (also known as Zante) last year
they were threatened and had the windows of their car smashed
they noticed vehicles tailing them for hours at a time
the activists from the German organization Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) were undeterred
they continued documenting and reporting illegal springtime hunting activities to the authorities
But they hadn’t anticipated the violence would escalate so drastically
five CABS members were on the Keri peninsula of Zakynthos – one of the Ionian’s major hunting hotspots
they waited to record the sound of gunfire
but hunters reportedly detected their presence
the activists reached a nearby road and thought they had managed to get away
and one activist had his nose broken by a punch
“The poachers don’t want us in their territory because we’re trying to save the turtle doves,” Stefania Travalia
“Some are willing to use violence against people to protect their illegal activity.” Andrea Rutigliano
adds that while they’ve previously encountered threats and tension from poachers in Cyprus and Italy
things had never escalated to this level of aggression
“Spring hunting continues despite having been banned in our country since 1983
In the name of ‘tradition,’ species like the turtle dove – now on the brink of population collapse – are still being killed,” says Myrto Karydi
species protection officer at the Hellenic Ornithological Society
the turtle dove population has plummeted by 79% since 1980
even legal hunting of the species has been suspended to aid recovery
migratory birds like the turtle dove pass through Greece on their way to breeding grounds across Europe
they arrive exhausted – only the strongest survive the journey
principal researcher at the Wildlife Laboratory of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization (ELGO Demeter)
describes them as “flying skeletons.” “Hunting during this period is banned throughout Europe
It’s wrong to target birds that are already worn out before they can reproduce
It’s like shooting the top 10 finishers in a marathon at the Olympics
The damage isn’t just to population numbers – it’s genetic
because the best breeders are taken out,” he emphasizes
scientists from the Hellenic Ornithological Society and ELGO Demeter installed acoustic sensors along key points of the turtle dove’s migratory path
these sensors recorded an estimated 57,095 birds killed or injured on five Ionian islands: Zakynthos
High levels of illegal hunting were also recorded last year
researchers detected 4,099 gunshots in Keri on Zakynthos
48 patrols were conducted across 15 locations
or confirmed case of illegal activity was reported
the sensors recorded over 500 gunshots in Keri alone
the hunting of migratory birds often takes place at so-called “posta” (watchposts) – improvised
elevated and camouflaged structures that resemble observation towers or small huts
“Poaching occurs during the day and in locations that aren’t remote
It’s easy to witness – either by sight or sound
even tourists report it to us,” says Manolia Vougioukalou of the Hellenic Ornithological Society
Many of these watchposts are located on private land and are allegedly rented out for the season to hunting groups for thousands of euros
Observers suggest that this financial aspect – combined with a perceived duty to preserve “local tradition” – may partly explain the resistance to anti-poaching measures and the vested interests behind it
The issue has been a source of controversy in the past
Giorgos Lattas was scheduled to travel to Zakynthos with dozens of wildlife wardens from the Peloponnese for inspections
But they never boarded the ferry – hundreds of people had already gathered at the island’s port to block their arrival
“The forest ranger at the time and a small administrative team crossed over first
it was decided we wouldn’t leave from Kyllini,” Lattas recalls
president of the 3rd Hunting Federation of the Peloponnese
emphasizes that the legal hunting season runs from August to the end of February for the vast majority of game species
“We must respect the laws and the decisions of the state,” he says
three wildlife wardens from the Peloponnese are sent to support the Zakynthos Forest Service – two of them stationed on the Strofades islands
a crucial stopover for turtle doves during their migration
These wardens are deployed from Easter Monday
they have observed a clear decline in the turtle dove population
Since assuming leadership of the Zakynthos Forestry Department in February 2023
Haido Christodoulou has made combating springtime poaching a priority
“It’s a situation that has persisted for years,” she tells Kathimerini
intimidation – even violence – but we focus on doing our job
The public needs to understand the impact – the meaning of losing an entire species.” According to data from the Forestry Department of Zakynthos obtained by Kathimerini
seven individuals were arrested for poaching
feels that hunters on the island are being unfairly blamed
we can’t hold 2,000 hunters accountable for the actions of 10
20 or even 50 reckless individuals,” he says
but not everything should be blamed on hunters
These activists enter fenced plots – private property
something would happen.” He also argues that game is scarce and poaching limited
There are far more serious environmental issues,” he adds
Four people were arrested in connection with the attack on the activists
They were initially identified through the license plates of the vehicles that had surrounded members of the CABS team
They have been released under restrictive conditions and deny any involvement in the assault
the lawyer representing three of the suspects
his clients maintain they were not involved in the violence and that they were not hunting illegally
her team received an outpouring of support – including from residents of Zakynthos
“Many people agree that poaching must stop,” she says
“But some are still too afraid to speak out.”

I was looking for a villa that was primed and prepped for tranquility
I was in serious need of relaxation – I wanted somewhere that could house 4+ people but still offered luxury hotel amenities
so that I could enjoy the benefits of a resort where the pool
restaurants and spa are a mere five-minute walk away at most
ZakynthosLesante Cape Resort & Villas is not your typical resort
It has tastefully managed to recreate the buzz and warmth of a village – something many others have tried and failed to do successfully
where the roads are lined with olive groves as far as the eye can see
Palatial is the first word that springs to mind
The towering ceilings allow light to seep into the space
while earthy ceramics add a certain je ne sais quoi
we’re lazing on the balcony with a cool glass of freshly squeezed juice and a beautiful view to complete the check-in process
It feels like an understatement to say that I was in awe of the Parparias villa
Three bedrooms with a sea view from the infinity pool
The interiors are all creamy neutrals and earthy woods
creating a sense of calm in the space and allowing the outside landscape to be the star of the show
with two equipped with a deep tub and sea view
The main bedroom had floor-to-ceiling glass patio doors that opened into the pool
The outdoor area is all sweeping views of the Ionian sea
with the infinity pool meeting the lush lawn
There are pool loungers peppered across the patio
too – perfect for hunkering down with a book while taking in some much-needed vitamin D
glass of Champagne in hand – well and truly starting the holiday off right

Seiko goes summery with a dial inspired by the superb waters of Greek island Zakynthos
some will surely appreciate it as it retains a classic date at 3 o’clock…
What we’re looking at is a classic dive watch by Seiko
with a design inspired by the famous 62Mas
the first dive watch of the brand and Japan
it retains a fairly straightforward shape with symmetrical case
The case here measures a fairly compact 40.5mm diameter
with a height of 13.2mm and a decent length of 47.6mm
a screw-down crown and a domed sapphire crystal on top
Let’s move to the specificities of this “Zakynthos” SPB473 edition
while the bezel is traditionally unidirectional
it features a new insert with a glossy effect – it’s not ceramic
even though it looks like it – and a very dark blue colour
Seiko adds here a white silicon strap that will surely look the part on a white sand beach somewhere in Greece
it comes with a date at 3 o’clock with the addition of a small lume plot next to it (which was absent when the watches were released in 2020)
Inside the case is the mid-range calibre 6R35
an automatic movement running at a 3Hz frequency and boasting a generous 70h power reserve
A model that will be reserved for the European market, the Seiko Prospex 1965 Divers “Zakynthos” SPB473 is limited to 1,000 pieces and will be available as of September 1st, 2024. It will be priced at EUR 1,500. For more details, please visit seikowatches.com
Seiko expects me to fly to Europe to buy this
Or they just exclude me from buying it because I don’t live in Europe
We live in a global community so why not make the watches available to all
Then i suppose every country should make their own watches and sale it in their country only
Here in Europe I canot buy Little Debbie’s Cinnamon Rolls
And I have to complain in a foreign language as you won’t understand me in my mother tongue
America Always expects the Rest of the world to Play by their rules

Authorities are actively investigating the case
keeping all possibilities open at this stage

For Paros – a Netflix cameo added to its new-found fame
Others prefer to stay just under the radar

or tuck into freshly caught seafood with your toes in the sand; party at buzzing beach clubs
or find a secluded spot on a sleepy beach; hike to ancient architecture
or browse trendy galleries – there’s a Greek island to suit

This article has been updated since its original publication date
Everyone knows the Venus de Milo (which has stood in the Louvre since the 19th century)
the volcanic island where Aphrodite’s graceful likeness was discovered
Those in the know jealously guard their treasured island
and especially its 70 (or more) beaches — surely the most diverse and dramatic coastline of all the Greek Islands
Instagram is saturated with no-filter shots of the undulating white cliffs at Sarakiniko
the bottle-green swimming hole at Papafragas
tiny boat houses wedged between rock and sea
(You’ll find the best photo opportunities at Klima and Mandrakia)
This painterly landscape was shaped by the minerals that have long been a source of wealth – obsidian
which still bubble up in the island’s many hot springs
As the 11,000-year-old mining industry is gradually giving way to tourism
several chic hotels have made an appearance
before the trickle of visitors turns into a tide
For more recommendations, see our guide to the best hotels in Milos
ParosThe best Greek island for: Welcoming locals and long beaches
Though not quite as big a secret as it used to be
most recently thanks to its cameo in One Day on Netflix
island hoppers in-the-know and those in search of an authentic taste of Grecian life
Though the pace here is altogether slower than on nearby islands
there’s still a vibrant restaurant and bar scene in popular Naousa
is that while the island has been gearing up for tourism in a way it hasn't done historically (thanks
to the new luxury hotels strung round the coastline)
more rustic and — crucially cheaper — with villages dotted high and low across the landscape
sprawling out across interwoven pathways (often without car access)
private homes and quaint boutiques selling locally-made wares
for travellers willing to part with the familiar streets of Santorini or the mecca of the masses
For more recommendations, see our guide to the best hotels in Paros
HydraThe best Greek island for: A long weekend with the art crowd
is painted in gaudy 'camouflage' by Jeff Koons
Joannou invites big hitters such as Matthew Barney and David Shrigley to create site-specific installations in the Greek island's old slaughterhouse
Even the school is commandeered for exhibitions in the summer holidays
Car-free and protected by a preservation order
Hydra has always been the artists' muse of the Greek Islands
Leonard Cohen set the scene in the 60s; now Brice Marden
Sadie Coles and Juergen Teller have homes here
Athenian artists take up residence at the School of Fine Arts
stone mansions overlooking the horseshoe harbour
Musicians of all stripes rehearse and record at the Old Carpet Factory
an 18th-century residence whose double-height ceilings and underground cistern have incredible acoustics
SifnosThe best Greek island for: A sizzling food scene and romantic hotels
an equally experimental restaurant in Seralia
a pretty little bay below the beautiful medieval village of Kastro
Lobsters are plucked straight from the sea at Heronissos
It's just the right balance of low-key luxury and unspoiled authenticity
SantoriniThe best Greek island for: Honeymooners
Cooing American and Chinese honeymooners line up to take selfies as the sun sinks behind Santorini's caldera
A volcanic explosion blew out Santorini's heart 3,500 years ago
and swirling rumours about Atlantis in its wake
The eruption also preserved the ancient city of Akrotiri under layers of ash
and created fertile ground for exceptional Assyrtiko grapes and Vinsanto wines
(Sample them at Domaine Sigalas and Vassaltis wineries
paired with delicate dishes that let the grapes sing.)
Apart from a boat trip to the smouldering crater of Nea Kameni and hot springs at Palia Kameni
there's not much to do but gaze at the mesmerising views from your suite
Most places to stay are concentrated in Oia and Imerovigli
but the inland village of Pyrgos is up-and-coming
Go for a twilight Bellini at Franco's Cafe and visit Emporio
with its smattering of old-school coffee shops and Airbnbs
For a glimpse of Santorini before the onslaught of cruise ships and Instagrammers
explore the quieter south (but keep your discoveries to yourself)
For more recommendations, see our guide to the best hotels in Santorini and the best Airbnbs in Santorini
SyrosThe best Greek island for: Culture and off-season cachet
you won’t find sugar-cube villages and whitewashed lanes
The colourful 19th-century city of Ermoupoli is built on twin peaks – one Orthodox
the heritage of a long Venetian occupation
There’s still a strong Italian flavour in Ermoupoli’s marble piazzas
the showpiece of a year-round cultural scene
the Greek blues popularised by local musician Markos Vamvakaris
A few rembetiko joints have survived in quaint
almost 900 steps above Ermoupoli; reward yourself with dinner at Hygge
FolegandrosThe best Greek island for: Authenticity with a bohemian buzz
The village square should be your first port of call on any Greek island: settle into your favourite café, pick up local gossip, and adjust to the languid pace of life. On Folegandros, this presents a challenge: the cliff-hanger capital, Hora, has not one but three squares, each brimming with a jumble of cafés, tavernas and dinky raki bars. We recommend Pounta
where the Danish owner makes and sells the lopsided cups and bowls in which your coffee and Greek yogurt are served
Panagia church; make the pilgrimage at sunrise (perhaps after an all-nighter at diminutive Astarti bar)
Folegandros – which means ‘iron hard’ in ancient Greek – is as barren as its name suggests
Fruit trees are protected from fierce winds by rings of stones
You won’t find sandy beaches lined with sunbeds; only limpid
Papalagi serves big fat prawns and whole grilled octopus on a wooden deck aligned with the horizon
Water taxis service some beaches in high season; otherwise you’ll have to scramble down rocky footpaths to cool off
stop at Mimis or Synantisi in Ano Meria for the island speciality of matsata (goat or rabbit stew with hand-made pasta)
CreteThe best Greek island for: Families and sunshine all year round
for a cooling dip and lunch at one of Crete’s finest tavernas
With the exception of Elounda – a pocket of bling popular with oligarchs – the north-east coast is scarred by over-development. Head west to the Amari valley or Apokoronas for authentic villages surrounded by olive and orange groves. Or go south, where you'll find the best beaches in Crete – try Ligres
take a back-to-nature break at Milia Mountain Retreat
a 16th-century hamlet powered entirely by solar energy
Everything on the mostly organic menu is grown
it’s almost impossible not to eat well on Crete
Time slows almost to a standstill in the mountain villages
where locals with formidable whiskers welcome you with shots of raki (Cretan grappa) for breakfast and celebrate saints' days with a volley of gunshots
Even the road signs are peppered with bullet holes
For more, see our edit of the best hotels in Crete
CorfuThe best Greek island for: character and lush landscapes
Corfu is the It Girl of the Ionian islands. The cosmopolitan capital is a charming clash of Venetian, British and French colonial influences. Evenings kick off with cocktails on the Liston (a colonnade modelled on Paris's Rue de Rivoli), followed by dinner at Salto
an unpretentious wine bar and bistro on the edge of the Old Town
restaurant and cooking school that specialises in unusual local dishes
such as roast pork with quince and crème brûlée with Corfiot kumquats
especially Kavos – unless you happen to like wet T-shirt contests
For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Corfu
NaxosThe best Greek island for: Endless sandy beaches
Naxiots once made considerable fortunes exporting potatoes
Locals bequeathed undesirable seaside plots – useless for farming – to their laziest offspring
When tourists cottoned on to the island's scores of fabulous beaches
these wastrels found themselves sitting on gold mines
The west coast of Naxos is fringed with mile upon mile of powdery sands
Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna delight toddlers and teenagers alike with their shallow waters and beach bars
where you can gallop across the dunes on horseback
Mikri Vigla for windsurfing and kitesurfing
Should you tire of frolicking on the shore
three supersized kouros statues are hidden in the hills and there are dozens of drowsy villages to explore
at the Vallindras distillery in Halki or sample homemade wine and arseniko cheese under the plane trees in Ano Potamia village
No wonder Herodotus described Naxos as “the happiest of islands." Rachel Howard
Cephalonia / KefaloniaThe best Greek island for: Laidback family holidays
also an enchanting setting for wine tasting.) The rocky coastline around Fiskardo is deliciously pristine: go snorkelling at tiny Dafnoudi or Emblisi
flanked by slabs of limestone that turn the water electric blue
See our guide to the best hotels on Kefalonia for more
AndrosThe best Greek island for: Walking trails and wild beaches
and fantastic farm-to-table tavernas like Kosses in Ano Fellos
And then there are the mind-blowing beaches: from the spectacular sandy bays of Zorkos
and Vori on the north coast to the mellow beach bars at Apothikes and Chryssi Ammos
or the sunset views and old-school fish taverna at Agia Marina
there are options for whichever way the wind or your mood is blowing
You could spend weeks on Andros and still have more to discover
SerifosThe best Greek island for: Naturists and purists
The sleeper hit of the Cyclades, Serifos is the summer retreat of interior designers and architects who prefer to keep the sandy beaches to themselves. (One French home-owner is so protective of her hideaway that she tells all her friends she summers on nearby Sifnos.) Even in August
you’ll find coves where you can skinny dip in blissful solitude
That’s because the best beaches (such as Kalo Ambeli and Skala) are only accessible via bone-rattling dirt roads or donkey tracks
rent a motor boat from the laidback harbour
Make sure to moor outside Anna’s taverna on Sikamia beach for freshly caught fish and garden-grown salads
In the cascading hilltop Hora, there’s barely any nightlife, no fancy hotels. But who cares when you can kick back with fennel pie and raki at Stou Stratou, pick up Natassa Kalogeropoulou’s minimalist ceramics at Kerameio
and listen to Greek folk in the open-air amphitheatre
MykonosThe best Greek island for: Decadent parties and five-star hotels
escape to Fokos taverna for superfood salads and lamb chops
an off-grid grill-shack overlooking Agios Sostis bay
where even Naomi Campbell has to queue for a table
Or cruise over to the tiny island of Delos
an archaeological sanctuary that once thronged with 30,000 sun worshippers (the temple is dedicated to Apollo
For more recommendations, see our guide to the best hotels in Mykonos
Zakynthos / ZanteThe best Greek island for: seaside holidays with toddlers or teens
has shrugged off its reputation as a destination for lads on tour (as long as you avoid Lagana and the built-up south coast) by rebranding itself as one of Greece's greenest islands
It's not just the emerald hills sliding into the electric blue Ionian: much of the south coast is a nature reserve where endangered loggerhead turtles hatch in the sand
but there are countless coves in every hue of green and blue
with sunbeds wedged between the rocks and palm-frond umbrellas positioned between the pine trees
Skinari is the starting point for boat trips to the most famous landmarks
where a rusting liner leans into the chalky cliffs
AmorgosThe best Greek island for: Deep-blue seas and wide-open spaces
It’s not easy to get to Amorgos. In high winds, the fast ferries stay grounded and the slow boat takes upwards of eight hours from Athens
a sleepy harbour lined with great little fish tavernas (our favourites are Prekas and Mouragio)
a sign announces: 'Welcome to Amorgos
This craggy Cycladic island has always attracted loners
who shuffle up the cliff face to the Monastery of Hozoviotissa
a sliver of white dangling 300 metres above the sea
The water here is a million shades of blue and so startlingly clear you can see every sea urchin lurking on the rocky shore
Even the sage-scented hiking trails are called Blue Paths
because the sea and sky are visible in all directions
the locals are outnumbered by shaggy goats that blend in perfectly with the burnished landscape and hippie vibe
But you don't have to be a recluse to fall for Amorgos
There are plenty of all-day spots and a few late-night bars where Amorgos groupies meet
for backgammon and cocktails; Pergalidi in Langada for herbal infusions and jazzy tunes; Seladi in Tholaria
with giddying views and a telescope for stargazing
PaxosThe best Greek island for: The perfect balance of seclusion and sophistication
a favourite of reclusive billionaires; and watch the sunset with a basil-infused Mastiha and tonic at Mylos bar
Want to cool down or escape the summer crowds
Drive through forests of chestnut and pine into Lefkada’s mountainous interior to the somnolent villages of Karya (home to an enchanting textile museum)
Eglouvi (to play backgammon under plane trees) and Exanthia (to watch the setting sun from up in the clouds at Rachi restaurant)
You might even see paragliders leaping off the mountain
IthacaThe best Greek island for: A mythical retreat for lovers and loners
Ithaca’s turquoise and emerald coves are popular with the sailing set
but few visitors venture into the forested hills
So you might be the only person exploring the eighth-century BC ruins of Odysseus’ palace
or making the heady trek to the church of Anogi
covered in Byzantine frescoes (ask for the key at the village coffee shop
where the owner will cook you a set menu of whatever is available – maybe a tomato salad
some local cheese and braised goat – straight from her garden or neighbours’ fields)
it’s an exhilarating two-hour hike down to Kioni
a miniature port where you’ll find Spavento
Go any time of day or night for ice-cream sundaes
The waterside tavernas at the drowsy fishing port of Frikes are unfailingly delightful
sheltered harbour town of Vathy is barely livelier
but the mood can be deliciously mischievous at Mylos bar
but the sea is as clear and refreshing as gin
unspoiled and infuriatingly (or gratifyingly) hard to reach
rugged little Ithaca is somewhere you can still disappear
TinosThe best Greek island for: Traditional villages and knockout tavernas
elevating local ingredients into complex modern dishes
For a perfect meal in perfect surroundings
go for cuttlefish risotto and octopus caramelised in grape must at Thalassaki
then watch dusk bleed into the horizon from Exomeria bar
so it's a wonder it isn't overrun with tourists
when Orthodox pilgrims flock here to kiss the Virgin Mary at the Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria
Solitary chapels and whimsical dovecotes stud thyme-scented hills
dropping to sandy bays whipped by the meltemi wind
There's a nascent surfer scene on Kolibithra bay
where a VW camper van has been converted into a cute beach bar
PatmosThe best Greek island for: Stark mystique and show-stopping villas
Patmos has an indefinable je ne sais quoi – an otherworldly quality that radiates from its crowning glory
who conjured up his apocalyptic revelations in a cave nearby
is where A-listers and fashion editors stay
High walls and heavy doors conceal magnificent mansions dating back to the 16th century
The almighty church has kept nightlife in check
head to quietly glamorous Astivi or Stoa Theo's bar
Beach life is generally languid and low-key; Psili Ammos and Livadi Geranou are our favourite hideouts
Dinner reservations are essential at Benetos
and Lambi for grilled fish on a purple pebble beach
Joining the Patmos in-crowd requires commitment. There's no airport and it's a nine-hour ferry journey from Athens, which keeps the hoi polloi at bay. Seriously reclusive types hop on a fishing boat from Patmos to Marathi and play castaway at Pantelis, a divine taverna with modest rooms to let. Read our full guide to Patmos
RhodesThe best Greek island for: Travelling back in time
When the writer Lawrence Durrell arrived in Rhodes after World War II
he found an island devastated by centuries of crusaders and invaders
it was 'a Rhodes dispersed into a million fragments
waiting to be built up again.' Since then
Rhodes has reinvented itself as one of Greece's top travel destinations
The big draw is the medieval citadel in Rhodes Old Town: stroll along the battlements and you'll spy Byzantine churches
a 15th-century guest-house decorated like a pasha's harem
with an enchanting restaurant in the garden
Upmarket hotels are clustered around Lindos
its magnificent acropolis surrounded by slate cliffs and emerald coves
Go for the views – and the sublime octopus ragout at Mavrikos restaurant
high-rise resorts give way to stretches of golden sand
you'll find alpine forests (Mount Attavyros)
faded frescoes (Saint Nikolaos Fountoukli) and ancient ruins (Kamiros)
Prasonisi is a powdery peninsula where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean
the other choppy – a metaphor for this island of two halves
SymiThe best Greek island for: Castaway coves and a picture-perfect port
Little Symi has the prettiest port in Greece
neoclassical mansions in every shade of apricot and peach rise like a mirage from the sea
Built by 19th-century sponge and spice merchants
You need strong legs to explore – it's about 500 steps up to the crumbling acropolis – but you won't need a car
The only proper road peters out at Panormitis monastery
Ravishing beaches such as Agios Giorgos Dysalona (backed by monumental cliffs) and Marathounda (where goats will try to filch your picnic) are only accessible by boat or on foot
more than 100 monasteries are hidden among the pine and cypress forests
luminous sea and almost tropical microclimate
Symi is a hit with French and Italian yachties
You'll find them eating flash-fried baby shrimp
a sensational taverna where the harbour views almost steal the show
AstypaleaThe best Greek island for: Escaping the crowds
Astypalea is surprisingly easy to get to (daily one-hour flights from Athens)
Every gap in the burnished hills frames a different view of Hora
cascading from the Venetian castle to seaside Skala
The scent of saffron biscuits wafts through the whitewashed lanes
Castro bar has a magical terrace that seems to float above the archipelago
a sort-of-resort surrounded by citrus orchards
Treacherous tracks hurtle down to shingle bays such as Vatses
where Linda's farm-to-table taverna serves the best roast goat in the Dodecanese
tiny islands connected by a double-sided beach
a lagoon where erotic graffiti was etched into the rocks 2,500 years ago
SkiathosThe best Greek island for: Flopping onto a sandy beach with a good book
Skiathos may be the smallest of the Sporades islands, which counts among its number sleepy Alonissos and the pretty Mamma Mia! location of Skopelos, but it’s by far the most popular, especially with families, who come for the baby powder-soft sandy beaches and laid-back vibe
The island has some of the finest beaches in Greece
turquoise-watered Koukounaries in the south the most celebrated and the busiest (forget about getting a sun lounger here in peak season)
are more rugged and windswept but no less idyllic – emerging onto Elia beach on the west coast
with its crystal-clear sea and rickety wooden taverna
is like stepping into a little slice of paradise
head to Sklithri and book one of the taverna’s tables right on the beach
baked feta and a platter of perfectly-chargrilled and out-of-this-world delicious vegetables then watch the sun set over the Aegean
AeginaThe best Greek island for: Low-key authenticity all year round
one of many stately homes in various states of ruin and repair that dot this incredibly diverse island
rugged coves to spend a few hours in the sun and sea
Aegina doesn’t have is great beaches — perhaps that’s what has spared this accessible island from over-development
This is an island that doesn’t depend on foreign tourists and is all the better for it
KastellorizoThe best Greek island for: Castaway dreams and swimming through caves
You can dive straight from Mediterraneo’s sundeck into the port
where sea turtles bob alongside colourful fishing boats
There’s not much action beyond the waterfront strip known as the kordoni
a slow supper of stuffed onions under the fairy-lit plane trees at Ta Platania
or perhaps some yoga in the wild on the even tinier islet of Ro
AntiparosThe best Greek island for: Relaxed cool
where both the décor and music are stuck in the ‘70s and ‘80s
The latter is a short boat or kayak ride from Despotiko island
where goats roam around the semi-excavated sanctuary of Apollo
The beauty of Antiparos is that nothing is more than ten minutes away
bumping into the same good-looking faces wherever you go
you can hop on the seven-minute ferry to Paros for kite surfing
LerosThe best Greek island for: Distinctive architecture and good vibes
the food scene is authentic and affordable: Thea Artemis taverna on gentle Blefouti bay
and the cult souvlaki joint Yparxo in Platanos are local favourites
there are family-run guesthouses brimming with character
where you feel more like a friend than a room number
SpetsesThe best Greek island for: Family holidays with the smart society set
Spetses is a sociable place to see and be seen
when you can hike the gentle green hills or cycle the coastal road that circles the island (there’s even a Tweed Run in October)
and easily accessible from Athens (2-3 hours by catamaran)
Spetses is a people-pleaser for all ages and seasons
For years, Kalymnos was unmoved by – if not outright hostile to – the arrival of mass tourism in Greece
The island lies too far from the mainland for the casual tourist to reach: the ferry was infrequent
the journey too long and the mountainous terrain a deterrent to building an airstrip
and you are still likely to arrive by ferry via its noisier neighbour
the sheer limestone cliffs of Kalymnos caught the eye of an Italian tourist who also happened to be a rock climber
He returned the following year to pen the first routes
Today there are more than 4,000 routes of various levels of difficulty on offer
making the island one of the best destinations for the sport in the world
much of the island remains untouched by time
calm crystalline swimming and stalls selling hot apple loukoumades
KeáThe best Greek island for: An easygoing escape
Despite its proximity to Athens – just one hour from Lavrio Port – Cycladic island Keá
has long flown under the international tourism radar
While some Athenians have marked it as their island of choice for a summer getaway
What they lack in drop-and-flop facilities
is more than made up for in seclusion and privacy; Orkos in the northeast is one of the most secluded
while blue-flag Koundouros in the southwest is popular with the yachting crowd and offers sunbeds and umbrellas alongside a number of cafés
With four significant shipwrecks off its sandy shores
This is an island dotted with noteworthy archaeological sites
is widely considered the most important – only accessible by foot
keen hikers might enjoy the hour’s walk from Stavroudaki
An easier site to reach – just a 15-minute walk from the island’s capital
a Sphinx-like representation of a lion carved into stone
while the Archeological Museum of Keá houses pottery
inscriptions and figurines dating back to the Neolithic period and showcasing Keá’s vast history
With the arrival of a global hotel brand like One&Only
a fast flurry of new restaurants and bars often follows
the hotel brings fresh options – Mediterranean dishes with a seafood slant at Atria
and contemporary cocktails at Kosmos (book in advance) – but traditional tavernas still reign supreme across the rest of the island: Aristos
O Paparounas and Piatsa are among the favourites
See your guide for top tips when visiting Keá Island
KosThe best Greek island for: Tradition with a twist
Kos comes with a multitude of stereotypes
having taken centre stage as the getaway of choice for the 18-30 holiday crowd for many years
But things are changing on this somewhat underrated Dodecanese island
quiet-luxury boutique hotels is emerging – look to Lango Design Hotel & Spa or Sagredo Boutique Hotel & Spa
Located just 4 kilometres from the Turkish coastline
set sail from the main port and within a matter of minutes you’ll have escaped the party boats
views instead replaced with Turkey’s mountains on one side
Steps from the port are the Altar of Dionysus
the ancient Greek physician who was born on the island
there’s the 4th-century BC Asclepieion of Kos
See the sights by bike – the (mostly) flat topography of Kos means it has been a cycling island for centuries
pedal towards the flamingo-filled waters of Tigaki's salt lake (autumn and spring are the best times to spot the graceful birds)
or to traditional villages for a taverna dinner
and we haven’t even mentioned the plentiful beaches
many of which get somewhat crowded during peak season
Black-sand Therma Beach with hot springs (the clue’s in the name) is the spot to visit for natural healing
KythnosThe best Greek island for: Holidaying like a local
Summer crowds in Kythnos are rare and – if seen at all – consist of mainly Greek visitors congregating in the island's capital
Perhaps surprisingly so (Kythnos is one of the closest Cycladic islands to Athens)
but perhaps not – this is an island that welcomes but doesn't rely on tourists
instead generating income from agriculture and fishing
With more than 100 kilometres of coastline – and a similar number of beaches dotted along them – sun
sea and sand are some of the highlights of any visit to Kythnos
The most well-known beach is Kolonos: connecting mainland Kythnos with Agios Loukas islet
sandy strip is flanked by the sea on both sides
its unique terrain a popular pull for (non-local) beachgoers
Loutra – which means ‘baths’ – is the spot to visit for a therapeutic dip in hot springs
popular beaches include Apokrousi and Martinakia (Hamsa beach bar at Martinakia is a good spot to sink into a lounger for a day)
Head to Simoussi in the southeast or Stifos in the southwest to soak up the sun in solitude
The best bet for restaurant reservations are inland: Da Massimo Sunset Restaurant in the charming village of Dryopida is a good choice or head to Mesaria (Hora) and wander the quaint streets before taking a table at Margiora for an evening of stylised Greek dishes- with-a-twist and creative cocktails housed in a restored 1800s mansion
but in terms of meeting the sweet spot of authentic island charm
smart hotels and relative ease of accessibility
we recommend venturing to the more underrated islands such as Milos (direct flights from Athens) and Paros (direct flights from London)
housed inside a neoclassical former residence – it's also just been awarded with one Michelin Key
Three people have been arrested on Zakynthos in connection with the death of a 69-year-old notary
whose bloodied body was found near her car in a parking lot outside her house
Police made the arrests after examining camera footage from the wider area
State broadcaster ERT reported that investigators believe the killing was the result of an attempted robbery but have not ruled out other possibilities
The notary was found dead Wednesday morning by her son
The investigation so far suggests that she had a wound to her left thigh and died as a result of uncontrollable bleeding
Police may seek access to the notary’s phone records as part of their investigation
Authorities have suspended construction on Marathonisi
According to officials and three environmental organizations
development of a project on Marathonisi is illegal
as the islet lies within the core of the Zakynthos National Marine Park
State broadcaster ERT reported that the decision was announced by Zakynthos Municipality’s tourism development committee during a meeting that included one of the islet’s owners
The committee’s decision halts construction until ZANTE Marathonisi
submits a study on the project’s lighting plan and secures a permit from OFYPEKA
the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency
alleging that they are being targeted by excursion boat operators seeking unrestricted access to the area
Prior to the municipal committee’s decision
bulldozers and construction materials had been transferred to the islet by ferryboat
while deforestation has begun around the islet’s chapel

Greece is facing a second European Court of Justice ruling over the hazardous state of a landfill on the Ionian island of Zakynthos
Authorities have proposed constructing a massive retaining wall to stabilize the towering waste pile before environmental rehabilitation begins
initially covering 8,240 square meters in 1996
expanded illegally to 92,000 square meters
Successive inspections since 2011 revealed severe environmental violations
leading to Greece’s first EU condemnation in 2014
the landfill remained operational until at least 2017
with landslides damaging waste treatment infrastructure
as EU funding no longer supports dumpsite rehabilitations
Officials hope the project will avert further penalties as Greece scrambles to comply with EU regulations

Police presence on the island of Zakynthos will increase
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis announced on Thursday
stabbings and violent clashes are common in Zakynthos
especially in tourist-heavy areas like Laganas
twelve people aged 17 to 23 were arrested following a severe bar fight involving stabbings
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors
The reality in Zakynthos will significantly improve,” Chrysochoidis stated
ten traffic officers and drug enforcement agents will be deployed to the island to address these issues
Five people were injured during a bloody fight involving 14 people in the area of Laganas on the popular Ionian Sea island of Zakynthos early Friday morning
who announced the arrest of 12 people (11 Greeks and one foreign national)
said everything started in a store between six people on one side and eight people on the other
Four of the injured people (aged 17 to 21) suffered stab wounds from a knife wielded by a 20-year-old
All those arrested have been charged for their involvement in a physical altercation
while some of them were charged with attempted murder and violation of the Weapons Act and causing grievous bodily harm
Local police authorities confiscated the knife as well as nine mobile phones from those involved as part of a preliminary investigation

A 112 emergency alert was sent Friday afternoon to residents and visitors in Kefalonia (also spelled Cephalonia) and Zakynthos islands
urging them to limit their movements due to severe rainfall
“Severe weather conditions (rainfall) on the island
Limit your movements and follow the instructions of the authorities,” read the message received by Kefalonia residents
Several roads in Kefalonia flooded on Thursday due to the heavy rainfall
while fire service received many calls to pump the water away from houses
We guide you on the perfect drive around an island with incredible coastlines
Few destinations in Greece combine beautiful nature
We visited the third-largest island in the Ionian Sea a few days ago
realizing a very “comprehensive” journey
Given that Zakynthos covers over 400 square kilometers and many of its most beautiful places are quite far from the main town
we wouldn’t have enjoyed our trip as much without a reliable and safe car
At the height of summer, when many people rent cars from the ports, Avis is a dependable choice
with stations at all major airports and over 60 service points throughout Greece
Finding the right car on the Avis website was an effortless process
We chose an SUV that met our standards while exploring the vast range of vehicles in the Avis fleet: premium
avoiding long waits and not wanting to waste a second of our beach time
We picked up our car on the scheduled day and time from the company’s station at Dionysios Solomos airport
After receiving a briefing from the informative staff on the necessary details about the car
we drove to our accommodation to drop off our things and began our exploration of the island
The city of Zakynthos was largely destroyed by the earthquake of 1953 – few buildings survived
you won’t see many old buildings from the Venetian and British periods
there are landmarks here well worth your time
One of these is the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians in the historic St
The museum is housed in a building constructed in the 1960s and holds the bones of Greece’s National Poet
as well as the poet Andreas Kalvos and his wife
as well as some of their manuscripts and personal items
and other exhibits belonging to prominent Zakynthians of the 17th and 18th centuries are displayed
Also presented are manuscripts by other notable Zakynthians
such as composer Pavlos Carrer and writer Gregorios Xenopoulos
We followed the road that reaches the end of the city and
we turned left to reach the district of Bochali
This is situated on an elevated point and offers a stunning view of the city of Zakynthos
as well as the ruins of the Venetian Castle
Dionysios Solomos was inspired to write the poem “Hymn to Liberty,” which later became Greece’s national anthem
the visit is worth it for the view of the city of Zakynthos
It was a good first taste of what we would see and do in the coming days
which has been closed for safety reasons since 2023
the western coast of the island is less developed for tourism compared to the south and the Bay of Laganas
But it remains an ideal place for seeing the beautiful beaches
and some of the most stunning sunsets in Greece
crossing almost the entire width of the island
and ended at the mountainous village of Agios Leon
passing through the villages of Machairado and Kiliomeno
we followed one of the most beautiful routes in Greece
We stopped several times to photograph stunning spots
we followed the downhill road leading to Porto Limnionas beach
we had brought along a mask and snorkel to enjoy the underwater scenery
A road starts from this beach that offers both seaside driving and forest crossings
It leads to the villages of Anafonitria and Volimes
semi-mountainous traditional settlements closest to the Shipwreck site
The villages are amphitheatrically built with views of the plateau and are ideal for strolls
Since access to the Shipwreck is prohibited – not only to the beach
but also to the upper viewing platform – we opted for an alternative way to enjoy the sunset
there is one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Mediterranean
The spot from where we enjoyed this splendid vista is about 300 meters outside the village
offering a breathtaking view of Schiza Bay
We watched the imposing cliffs as the landscape filled with shades of yellow and red
we also enjoyed a beautiful inland route in Zakynthos
The dirt road to Panagia Skopiotissa was somewhat challenging
There stands the church of Panagia Skopiotissa
built in the shape of a free cross with a dome
and along with the church of Agios Andreas in Kalamaki
it is one of the only Byzantine-style churches in Zakynthos
there are preserved frescoes and an icon of the Virgin Mary
Even if architectural history doesn’t interest you
it’s worth coming here for one of the most beautiful views of the Ionian Sea
The island’s greenery and the blue of the sea harmonize perfectly
We wished we had more time in Zakynthos to explore the less touristy northern side better
we’re sure that we’ll return to the island of Kalvos and Solomos
Thanks to the numerous and frequently updated offers from Avis
If you’re someone who enjoys activities during your vacations
you’ll be surprised by how many options you have in Zakynthos for hiking
The island’s signature wine is the white Verdea
a Protected Geographical Indication wine produced exclusively on Zakynthos
Other varieties produced on the island include Goustolidi and Avgoustiatis
Several wineries on Zakynthos are open to visitors
From Athens to Zakynthos, you can reach the island by plane or by ferry from Kyllini (around a six-hour drive from Athens), in a trip that can be combined with the beautiful coastlines of Ilia. In any case, you’ll need transportation. So, make sure to check the Avis website whenever possible to find the vehicle you need at the right price

The TimesThe first thing to say is that the Peligoni Club (Peli to its friends) isn’t really a hotel at all
It’s best described as an upmarket beach club and villa set-up in wild northern Zakynthos
that’s become a word-of-mouth hit among well-heeled families
Guests book a stay at one of Peligoni’s villas and also buy memberships (valid for the duration of your stay) to the club itself
the kids’ clubs and events such as sociable dinners
pool and towels; others are chargeable via the “Peli card” supplied at check-in
Adults love Peligoni’s kids’ clubs — as do their children
who cycle through activities such as T-shirt-making and sailing with cheerful staff — and the programme of fitness classes
which lend the whole place a real sense of community and fun
It’s just as easy to hole up in a lovely villa here for a week
although you’d be missing the point of the place
as it’s a 45-minute drive from Zakynthos town and the airport
Score 8/10Guests stay in properties scattered in the hills surrounding the club
while selected and booked through Peligoni
so while there’s no one-size-fits-all choice
windblown Greek vibe Peligoni is known for
They range from reasonably priced and fuss-free charming local apartments to blockbuster big-group affairs
catering to a range of price points — but no more expensive than what you’d spend in another part of Zakynthos
The most affordable start from just shy of £1,000 a week for two people
We stayed in the gorgeous three-bedroom Avlaki (pictured)
and had the major benefit of being a three-minute walk from the club’s front door rather than a drive up the hill
This traditional stone villa has three all-white en suite bedrooms and a large wraparound terrace with an outdoor kitchen
which was perfect for lazy family breakfasts
Cheaper options are the Traverso cottages sleeping couples or small families; the most expensive are terracotta Kapari Bay — a seven-bedroom gargantuan with sea views — and traditional stone Figari
which sleeps 20 across four different buildings
Villas can be added or removed from year to year if owners choose — but most come with gorgeous sea views across to neighbouring Cephalonia and pools (typically in all but the very smallest properties)
NIKOLAS DOSTScore 9/10The laid-back Mediterranean all-day Tasi is Peligoni’s nucleus — serving relaxed brunch
sandwiches and small plates overlooking the ocean
Smaller venues around the estate include the Rock Café
where you can enjoy cold drinks including the beloved milkshakes and barista-made coffee; the Yard Bar
where happy hour for cocktails and wines (the Peligoni has a long-standing partnership with Château Léoube
a Provence rosé) runs between 5-6pm; the pool bar
and the ice-cream shack serving Carte D’Or and Ben & Jerry’s
too: about a two-minute drive up the road is the Deli Kitchen; the deli selling organic essentials such as bread and veg
A ten-minute drive down the coast is the fabulous seafood restaurant Mikro Nisi
with an open-air terrace above a small cove
serving Greek small plates and fresh catches
Each week at Peligoni there are two “event nights” in the courtyard (this may change in low season)
a large space in the middle of the club with long wooden tables under a fairy-lit tent
sometimes featuring a guest chef — perhaps a barbecue night or a relaxed food festival
They’re designed to get guests mingling — plus children get their own table with childcare staff and games
Note that every venue at Peligoni is cash-free: guests use their “Peli cards” to pay
and then settle up the terrifying bill at the end of the week

NIKOLAS DOSTScore 9/10This is where Peligoni shines
There’s a comprehensive series of events each month
which flexes week-to-week depending on the time of year
Babies are settled into the crèche (for an extra cost)
while children aged four to five can enjoy activities ranging from arts and crafts to pool games at Rugrats & Rascals
a London-based kids’ club brand that is sporty and outdoorsy
while teens get their own schedule and area of the club to hang out
there are fitness-oriented weeks called PACE
and group tennis lessons keep sporty adults happy
If that all sounds like hard work and you’d rather flake out on a padded sunbed under the Ionian sun
the club terrace has tens of sunbeds and cabanas tiered above the sparkling sea
rather a small diving board and ladder into the water
from where it’s a two-minute swim to the floating platform
A paddlesports upgrade offers kayaking and paddleboarding; a full water sports upgrade also gets you access to sailing and windsurfing
These memberships are extra on top of the ordinary Peligoni membership

the prices of holiday packages for the summer of 2025 have increased by 4.2%
the survey analyzed more than 8,000 holiday packages to the top 10 summer destinations for Britons
The highest rate of increase (11.5%) is recorded for Black Sea holiday packages in Bulgaria: from £1,038 in 2024
This means that a couple booking a week-long summer break now will have to spend £238 more
Holidaymakers will also have to pay an extra £80 or more for week-long package holidays to Italy (up 7.4%)

while in the Balearic Islands they are cheaper by 0.6%
they are more attractive destinations than the rest of Europe for British holidays this summer
the average price of a package holiday in the 10 popular destinations for Britons for a week in August
There are many reasons for these price increases
analysts is the continued high demand for holidays
providers will charge what customers are willing to pay
Rising hotel energy costs and aviation fuel are also to blame for price increases
as is a shortage of aircraft due to the inability to meet orders for new aircraft
making it difficult to schedule sufficient flights
The average price increase was above the current rate of inflation in the UK (2.5%) and the eurozone (2.4%) for seven of the 10 countries/regions examined in the survey
The sharp price increases in Bulgaria could be attributed to a lack of supply
as package holidays are concentrated in a few Black Sea resorts
In Mediterranean destinations such as Spain and Greece
holiday packages are offered at resorts throughout the country and
and Cyprus reflect the increased availability of luxury all-inclusive accommodation

Shipwreck Beach had been on my travel bucket list for years
when I found a cruise ship itinerary for this May that included Zakynthos
the third largest island in the Ionian Sea and one far less visited than other Greek islands
Friends and I booked a Navagio Shipwreck by Land and Sea private tour
I read that Shipwreck Beach would be closed because of a risk of landslides
I wasn’t sure what that meant for our tour
but reasoned that some Shipwreck Beach would be better than no Shipwreck Beach
coming into focus as we motored closer in impossibly blue water: a pristine beach surrounded on three sides by towering limestone cliffs
looking as if it had been lowered by cranes
the rumored smuggling ship that ran aground in 1980 and is the centerpiece of the famously photographed Shipwreck Beach
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]Although government safety measures prohibited us from swimming or going ashore
our tour boat operator got us as close as he legally could for photos
the Panagiotis getting smaller and smaller in our wake
I was giddy and exponentially more excited about the land portion of the excursion
which would include a view of Shipwreck Beach from the overlook
the centerpiece of Shipwreck Beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos
The beach is currently closed to visitors due to landslide concerns
but tour boat operators get guests as close to shore as they can for photos
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]On the way back to our launch site
Talk about an island with an embarrassment of riches
The boat went inside as far as space allowed
and our guide shared information about the cave
the sea floor and the water that cast an ethereal blue hue everywhere as it reflected on the walls and overhead
we exited and stopped a few dozen yards away
we were free to swim to the cave and explore
including a friend who went first and whose teeth were chattering so much that I briefly reconsidered
We swam to the cave and climbed out of the water
which even had a tiny beachlike area in one spot
and taking photos to share with each other later
it was time to slip back into the frigid water and return to the boat
There are a number of caves on the west side of Zakynthos
The brilliant blue water reflects on walls and overhead
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]Thankfully
and we were warm and dry in no time before loading back into the tour van
The impossibly clear and colorful water along the coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]Already several hours into the excursion
a lovely open-air restaurant in the village of Anafonitria
The woman working there welcomed the group and proudly proclaimed “Mama makes the best moussaka.” Mama did not disappoint
"Mama" makes a mean moussaka at Galaxy Taverna
an open-air restaurant in the village of Anafonitria on the Greek island of Zakynthos
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]Stomachs full
a small viewing platform from which Shipwreck Beach is visible
The beach and the Panagiotis were a bit obscured because of the angle
Our guide encouraged us not to spend too much time here and assured us the best view was yet to come
We followed him through a hole in the fence
walking past a triangular sign on the left with a graphic I assumed meant danger and
a sign that included the phrases ”Approaching is prohibited” and “Risk of falling.” Warning heeded
we cautiously navigated shrubs and rocks as we walked along a dirt trail for what felt like a long time
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]There were no words at that moment
The scene before us was the stuff of screen savers
enjoying the vista and savoring the moment
but after 15 or 20 minutes it was time to leave
Shipwreck Beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos shines
[ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]On the way to the cruise port
our guide told us there was one more thing he wanted to show us: the oldest olive tree on Zakynthos
It would take about 15 minutes to get there
the group decided not to chance it and returned to the cruise ship
Several months and several trips since that magical day
I have come to realize that some destinations on the travel bucket list shouldn’t be crossed through just because you’ve been there
There’s this cruise that goes to Zakynthos next year that I’m seriously considering
I still need to see that 2,000-year-old olive tree
get a photo standing by a shipwreck on a beach
The Greek island of Zakynthos is a photographer's dream, with one vivid scene after another. [ DAWN CATE | Tampa Bay Times ]Dawn CateNews Editor
