Only 32 archers, eight in each of the four championship categories, have made it to the 18th Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Tlaxcala
and Mexico received one spot in each category as host nation
Nine of the 16 recurve archers competing in Tlaxcala climbed the podium at Paris 2024 – but noticeably absent from the roster is men’s runner-up Brady Ellison
who has failed to qualify for the World Cup Final for the first time since his debut at the event in 2010
Defending circuit champions Marcus D’Almeida, Mathias Fullerton and Sara Lopez return to defend their titles. The current recurve women’s trophy holder, Kang Chae Young
The four archers who win in Tlaxcala will secure the title of Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion and a 30,000 CHF cash prize
The Mexican city already hosted the Hyundai World Cup Final two years ago, and it’s the fifth time the country has staged the circuit’s flagship event – after Merida 2006, Mexico City 2015, Tlaxcala 2022 and Hermosillo 2023
the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala
Line-upThe archers listed in bold are the top seeds and will be placed at either end of their match bracket. A match draw, held on Thursday and streamed on Friday
in Tlaxcala will determine the positions of the other archers

Those competing in Tlaxcala are listed in bold
EquipmentAthletes at the Hyundai Archery World Cup compete in either the recurve or compound events, which correspond to the type of bow they use.
Recurve bows are the modern evolution of traditional bows. The limbs curve away from the archer at the top and bottom of the bow, which is what gives the ‘re-curve’ its name. The bows feature sights and stabilisers that help the archer to aim and release an arrow accurately.
The recurve events are currently included on the programme of the Olympic Games.
Compound bows use a system of pulleys and cables, making them a more mechanically efficient and inherently accurate type of bow. The strength required to pull the bow is at its maximum at the start of the process, decreasing the further the bow is drawn back, which makes it easier to hold while aiming. Archers also use mechanical release aids and sights with magnified lenses to further increase accuracy.
Competition formatEight archers compete in each category at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final, with the winner decided on the outcome of a matchplay bracket.
Each of the four competition sessions consists of eight matches: four quarterfinals, two semifinals, a bronze and a gold medal match. An archer must win three consecutive matches to be crowned Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion.
Recurve archers shoot over a distance of 70 metres at targets measuring 122 centimetres in diameter, aiming to hit a 10-ring measuring just 12.2 centimetres in diameter – or about the size of an orange. Recurve matches are decided using the set system.
The goal is to accrue six set points. A set consists of three arrows and the maximum score is 30 points. At the end of each set, the archer with the highest combined arrow score is awarded two set points. Both archers receive one set point if the score is tied.
An archer can win a match quickly – with a score of 6-0 or in ‘straight sets’ – by winning three sets in a row.
Compound archers shoot over a distance of 50 metres at targets measuring 80 centimetres in diameter, with the four outer rings removed, aiming to hit a 10-ring measuring just eight centimetres in diameter. Compound matches are decided using cumulative scoring.
The goal is to acquire the most number of points over a certain number of arrows. Matches last for 15 arrows and are split into five ends of three arrows. The maximum score is 150 points and each match takes about 15 minutes.
If a recurve match is tied at 5-5 after five sets or a compound match is tied on total score after 15 arrows then a shoot-off decides the winner. Both archers shoot a single arrow and the arrow that lands closest to the centre of the target wins the match.
Twelve steelworkers were killed on Wednesday morning after a furnace exploded in the Mexican state of Tlaxcala
One more worker was severely injured with burns on his face and arms
According to a preliminary report by the state government
steel pouring from a “tower” came into contact with water and “generated a reaction,” igniting an entire wing of the steel mill
Other media reports point to overheating and faulty equipment
Several neighbors in the town of Xaloztoc woke up to the initial fire and filmed the moment when a massive fireball erupted from the plant
Footage of the aftermath shared on social media showed the charred structure and bodies
Management wasted precious time by blocking emergency teams from entering
claiming that company brigades were already handling matters
The bodies were not recovered until nearly 7 p.m
and had to be identified through DNA samples
already signed an agreement on a joint response with state governor Lorena Cuellar Cisneros
who belongs to the nominally “left” Morena party of President Claudia Sheinbaum
Cuellar immediately came to the defense of the company on Wednesday
stressing that the last safety inspection took place in April
We know that there was a situation here that we cannot yet comment on
but we are investigating what the causes were,” she said
Simec ordered workers in other areas to show up the following morning
to work a few feet from where their co-workers had been incinerated hours earlier
which belongs to the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM)
a gangster-ridden arm of the state and management
said the 259 union members at the plant would not work until labor authorities “certify” that conditions are safe
is merely an effort to dodge its own responsibility for the accident
suggesting it is all in the government’s hands
This also opens the door for a swift return to work
with the Labor Ministry already hurrying to carry out an extraordinary inspection to give the green light
Relatives of the victims and their co-workers have told the media that the company ignored reports of faulty equipment
They are demanding that the plant be closed until conditions are actually safe
a relative of one of the workers burned to death in the plant
said: “I know that it was reported earlier that a mobile crane where the ore container was transported was about to collapse; and they did not pay any attention
they did not care until it reached its limit
and spilled from above on the fellow workers
He added: “How is it possible that they don’t act when the operators are telling them that there is a faulty piece of equipment
They told me that this equipment had already been reported for three weeks when it was already totally faulty.”
He said there have been other accidents caused by the lack of safety protocols
stressing that Avendaño leaves behind three children
the partner of a young worker killed in the blast
told the Mexican daily Milenio that “this was no accident.” She explained: “My partner had told me that the machinery was already faulty
The only thing I ask of the governor of Tlaxcala and the authorities is that they close the company
it’s not the first time this kind of thing has happened
it’s a company that doesn’t have the right safety measures in place.”
the inspections by the government have proven to be compromised
and this applies to any investigation overseen by the same authorities
Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his successor
proved to be entirely indifferent to the safety and lives of workers and committed to safeguarding the key supply chains of US and Canadian transnationals and their Mexican partners at all costs
López Obrador and Sheinbaum agreed to reopen key North American suppliers
sacrificing hundreds of thousands of lives to the COVID-19 virus
known in Mexico as the “King of Steel,” was among those who benefitted the most from this criminal policy
His fortune jumped from $1.2 billion in 2020 to $3.4 billion this year
Simec advertises as the only producer of leaded steel in North America and makes special bar quality (SBQ) steel
rebar and commercial and structural steel long products
It is a key supplier of special steel necessary for major industries
It maintains four plants in Mexico and seven in the United States
as well as subsidiaries in Brazil and the Netherlands
New York to “consolidate” production at its “state-of-the-art” facilities in Tlaxcala
where the scaffolding falls apart and incinerates workers
The deal signed by the company and the government on Wednesday vows to pay a meager 100,000 pesos ($4,930) as compensation and 20,000 pesos for funeral expenses ($986) per worker
Only four unionized workers will get an additional life insurance payment from the CTM
the amount of which the union refuses to disclose
The explosion in Tlaxcala was no “accident” but an act of social murder tied to the deliberate policy of securing corporate and national “competitiveness” by downgrading safety measures and working conditions
This policy could not be enforced without the trade unions and politicians pitting workers of different countries against each other in a race to the bottom
In order to make the families whole and secure the right to a safe job and a living wage regardless of the country of operations
the ill-gotten fortune of Vigil Gonzalez and Simec need to be expropriated and transformed into public property under workers’ control
must be organized and overseen by the workers themselves to establish criminal responsibility
To advance these demands requires that steelworkers at Simec across the Americas establish rank-and-file committees opposed to the union bureaucracies and all capitalist parties as part of the International Workers Alliance for Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC).

A few years ago, a meme claiming that Tlaxcala didn’t exist went viral in Mexico. Paradoxically, though, Tlaxcala is actually one of Mexico’s most beautiful states and offers an exceptional quality of life.
Located in the central highlands, Tlaxcala is bordered by Hidalgo, México state and Puebla. In 2017 when then-governor Marco Mena announced the inauguration of the state’s first-ever electric escalator, many on social media began to joke that they didn’t know Tlaxcala even existed in the first place.
Now, for a variety of reasons, the spotlight is firmly on the tiny state, in no small part as the rest of the country has come to celebrate its historical richness. Tlaxacala first came to prominence during the Spanish conquest, when the native Tlaxcalans allied with the Spanish to fight against the Mexica
Tlaxcala boasts 1,143 historical monuments
55 architectural sites and 87 culturally significant properties on the National Institute of Anthropology and History’s (INAH) Catalogue of Historic Monuments
It is also home to two Unesco World Heritage sites
as well as major archaeological digs at Cacaxtla-Xochitécatl
A significant portion of these historic buildings and archeological sites are located in the municipalities of Huamantla
The beauty and wealth of this state are also linked to its natural heritage: Tlaxcala features stunning forested areas
particularly in La Malinche Matlalcuéyatl National Park
with a total investment of 15 billion pesos (US $731 million)
Other factors have also contributed to the growth of tourism in Tlaxcala. The state has invested in tourism promotion that has apparently borne fruit: tourism — almost entirely domestic — jumped 42% from 2022 to 2023, and won the Tourism Innovation award at the Fitur 2024 Excellence Awards in Madrid
Tlaxcala has also hosted various high-profile sporting events
including the World Archery Championships and the World Beach Volleyball Championships
The boom in tourism has led to the opening of at least 22 major hotels in the last three years
The industry’s importance is such that tourism is now Tlaxcala’s second most important source of income
there is also a public strategy to transform the city of Tlaxcala into a cultural hub for students in Mexico
Institutions such as the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal)
the Tlaxcala School of Art (Edart) and School of Music (EMET) and the state’s Ministry of Culture offer bachelor’s degrees in visual arts
Huamantla: This beautiful town is renowned for its gastronomy
is famous for the floral carpets crafted overnight during “the night when no one sleeps,” when families of artisans create colorful sawdust and flower carpets that cover more than six kilometers of streets in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe
Santuario de las Luciérnagas: Located in the highest region of the state
oak and oyamel forest is world-famous for its firefly sightings from June through August
La Malinche: The La Malinche volcano is situated in one of the country’s most stunning natural parks and is considered the fifth-highest mountain in Mexico
It offers opportunities for hiking and mountain biking and is regarded as one of the most beautiful natural formations in the country
gastronomy and safety make this state one of the most promising destinations for tourism

An explosion and fire at a steelworks in Tlaxcala claimed 12 lives on Wednesday morning
The accident occurred at the Simec steelworks in the municipality of Xaloztoc

were investigating to determine the accident’s cause
Tlaxcala Governor Lorena Cuéllar expressed her “complete solidarity” with the victims and their families
“I deeply regret what happened this morning at the steelworks in San Cosme Xaloztoc,” she said on X
Simec is a Mexican company that makes a range of steel products
It has steelworks in several Mexican cities
It also is the parent company of Republic Steel in the United States ever since acquiring Republic in 2005
In 2023, Simec decided to close Republic Steel’s aging steel mills in Canton, Ohio, and Lackawanna, New York, indefinitely and move those operations to its more modern, “state-of-the-art” facilities in Xaloztoc
With reports from El Economista
She defeated India’s Deepika Kumari in straight sets in the gold medal match
who has now been the World Cup runner up on five different occasions
Li meanwhile, won the finale of archery’s premier international circuit on her first attempt which features eight of the best archers from each event – compound and recurve – per gender who qualify either from winning one of three World Cup stages in the year or their world ranking. (Plus the two individual champions from Paris 2024 who received Olympic wildcards.)
“The first match was relatively tense and the last two felt like a little bit more of a challenge,” said Li on her differences between matches
“I was still doing my best but I wasn’t as nervous as I was in the first match.”
“I was just trying to get the best arrows out
I wasn’t thinking too much about winning or losing.”
The world number 16 qualified through her ranking and showed touches of a true champion throughout the afternoon session
Angela Ruiz was her first opponent in the quarterfinals
with the 18-year-old having nothing to lose and the Chinese archer all to gain in front of a patriotic Mexican audience
as Ruiz dropped a perfect score to take the fourth end and make it to a fifth set
Li was not bothered by the pressure as she shot a fine 29 to disappoint the home fans
Once the Paris 2024 women’s team silver medallist got into a rhythm on the shooting line, her strong, quick drawing style worked its magic as it has done throughout 2024. She dropped a 28, three 29s and a 30 to take out the Olympic women’s team gold medallist Jeon Hunyoung
The gold medal match was one of pure intrigue
Li and Kumari are well known to be two of the best archers in recurve women but neither have ever won an individual major honour as big as a Hyundai World Cup nor had they faced one another
To complement this, 2010 Commonwealth Games Champion Kumari had also performed strongly in the quarter and semifinals as she thrashed Li’s Chinese teammate Yang Xiaolei in straight sets before knocking out eventual bronze medallist Alejandra Valencia on her home turf of Mexico
There was little competitiveness shown in this clash though as Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games bronze medallist Li dismantled her comfortably in just three ends including a perfect 30 in the second
“It’s an honour to be part of this World Cup
I’m going to work even harder after that.”
The visibly disappointed Kumari could not match the grouping of her Chinese counterpart as she still yearns for that World Cup Final gold which has eluded her now on six different attempts
Valencia was gutted to not be in the top two in her home country
but she still came away from Tlaxcala with a bronze medal after beating Korea’s Jeon
Valencia seemingly saved her best for the bronze final as she shot only one eight in the entire match
with her 30 and 29 scores in the last two ends of the match sealing her place on the podium.
Sunday’s action concluded the 2024 Hyundai Archery World Cup season with the first stage of the 2025 edition to start in April in Haines City, USA.
The Colombian overcame Alexis Ruiz and home crowd favourite Dafne Quintero in the quarter and semifinal before beating World Cup Final debutant Meeri-Marita Paas
to reach the top of the podium of archery’s premier international circuit once again
Lopez was visibly emotional in the aftermath and could barely sing her own national anthem with tears streaming down her face
“I don’t really know what happened with that last arrow,” said Lopez in the post match interview
“I think I just shot it without even thinking
It was only when I heard Jean [her coach] calling the 10 and I knew it hit the 10.”
“The first day I was cheering her [Paas] up because it was her first final and I saw she was nervous.”
it does not matter if I don’t win because I know I have made history
and the idea is to be happy and enjoy today and it worked in my favour."
having been on the World Cup circuit since 2012 when she was a 17-year-old
But after competing in her dozenth World Cup season, her tenth Final and adding another major gold to her already stacked medal cabinet which includes a World Championship gold, Pan American Games gold and four Pan American Championship medals (one gold
Lopez is showing in 2024 that class really is permanent
Despite there being a positive, vociferous atmosphere in a warm Tlaxcala with two Mexicans in Andrea Becerra and Quintero vying for glory in front of a home crowd
there was almost an air of inevitability that the 2021 World Archery Champion would repeat history especially by starting off with three perfect scores in her quarterfinal against American Ruiz
Then there was a blip in her first end as she dropped a nine making 29, bettered by Becerra’s 30 who despite never winning any major honours individually has been knocking on the door of gold medals having won silver in Shanghai and Yecheon this year in addition to her silver in last year’s World Championships.
But that blip proved only to be minor as Lopez showed no signs of a collapse
responding with four consecutive perfect scores of her own which the 24-year-old Becerra could not keep up with
Dropping three nines in the first two ends of the gold medal match against the 2022 Indoor World Series silver medallist Paas meant Lopez was even more so on the back foot
not letting emotions get the better of her and shot another three perfect ends
her overall score of 147 enough to edge out her Estonian counterpart’s 146
The emotions however were fully out after the victory as Lopez announced that 2024 may have been the last we could see of her on the shooting line for a couple of years when asked when she plans on winning her 10th World Cup
“I don’t know if it will be next year or the other
but I will take decisions based on my personal career.”
“I will transition to indoor and I will start focusing on that more and maybe next year or not..
to be honest I don’t know if I’ll get it.”
There was still something to cheer about for the hundreds of loud and proud home supporters in attendance at Tlaxcala as Quintero achieved bronze. Mexico were guaranteed the medal after Quintero and Becerra’s semifinal defeats which saw the former climb onto the podium as she did in last year’s World Cup Final which was also held in Mexico
The action continues this weekend in Tlaxcala with the recurve finals taking place tomorrow which you can stream on archery+.

Tlaxcala is also the name of this tiny state’s capital city
The eponymous capital attracts so few tourists
My husband and I might never have visited the city were it not for a friend who regularly hikes up nearby La Malinche
to train for even higher peaks in the Himalayas and the Andes
The volcano is a nontechnical climb that anyone in reasonable shape should be able to do
we met a mom from Puebla and her two adult children on the path
I don’t know how to express “duh” in Spanish
gently rising forest path for a couple of hours
though I could tell by my labored breathing that we were already at 11,000 feet
Then we reached an open area where we could see the nearby peak of Orizaba
so we took a break at the start of the boulders
I carried on a few paces and rounded a bend to see how the trail looked
neither of us wanting to be the first to say it
My only motivation for reaching the top was sheer ego
“I guess my lungs at 81 are not what they were at 41.” So with a sense of mixed relief and regret
we agreed to turn around and head back to Tlaxcala
And of course we would run into the Puebla mom and had to admit we hadn’t reached the top
Because despite the city’s “There’s nothing there” reputation
Tlaxcala is not a UNESCO World Heritage site
as is nearby Puebla’s cuadro histórico (historical quarter)
Its lack of stand-out features turn into a strength
The town isn’t crowded with tourists or cars; in fact
the traffic feels like how most cities felt thirty years ago
not one of those tiny tadpole pools most hotels offer
The city is an easy two-hour bus ride on ATAH bus from Mexico City’s TAPA bus station
And while I’ve accepted the fact that La Malinche is not a peak I’ll ever claim

The host nation of each World Cup Final receives one invitation place per category
however both Becerra and Quintero qualified on points in the compound women’s event
With Olympic Champions Kim Woojin and Lim Sihyeon now booking spots as Olympic wildcards rather than stage winners, Mauro Nespoli (Italy) and Sonoda Waka (Japan) join the recurve line-ups as the next eligible points qualifiers from the World Cup Ranking
No further changes are expected in the line-up
Nine of the 16 recurve archers competing in Tlaxcala climbed the podium at Paris 2024 – but noticeably absent from the roster is men’s runner-up Brady Ellison
Defending circuit champions Marcus D’Almeida, Mathias Fullerton and Sara Lopez return to defend their titles. The current recurve women’s trophy holder, Kang Chae Young, did not make the Korean team in 2023.
Lopez has won the World Cup Final a record eight times.
Kim Woojin and Mike Schloesser sit joint-third in the all-time leaderboard with four trophies, behind Lopez and Ellison, who has five.
The 2024 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final takes place on 19-20 October in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
Our people making a difference is a series featured throughout Owens Corning’s 2023 Sustainability Report
As a leader in both Human Resources and EHS (Environmental
Victor Garcia believes he has the best job at Owens Corning — as he puts it
he has people in his hands and in his heart
Victor is also the head of the Latin American Inclusion and Diversity Council
so he has the opportunity to help ensure that the plant in Tlaxcala
The plant’s commitment to caring is exemplary
as evidenced by the fact that they were recently recognized by the Human Rights Commission of Tlaxcala
On receiving recognition from the Human Rights Commission of Tlaxcala
It’s a milestone for us because we’re talking about human rights at a higher level than the sense of paying wages or not hiring children
The award recognizes that we care for our employees and our communities
and diversity are part of our policies and part of our culture
and hear testimony demonstrating that our company is actually beyond just complying with the law — we’re making the employee experience something better than normal
Owens Corning Tlaxcala offers the possibility for people to make a future for themselves and their families while creating the materials that make the world a better place for our children
On initiatives designed to increase equity in manufacturing
We have what we call Pink Coffee on a weekly basis

where we ask them how they feel they’re being treated by the men in the company
Their standard answer is that it’s a good environment
This is important to me because we have had an ethics program in place for the last five years
making sure that the message is sent that we must have a positive culture without discrimination or harassment
On taking steps toward a better future for everyone
We can start by educating our children — or nieces

The 31-year-old mayor of a municipality in Tlaxcala known for its firefly sanctuary was found dead inside his home late Thursday night
possibly having taken his own life with less than three days remaining in his term
Oswaldo Romano Valdés was one of the youngest mayors in Mexico when the people of Nanacamilpa elected him at age 28 in 2021
His three-year term was set to expire on Saturday
with the new mayor to be sworn in the next day
Affiliated in recent years with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena)
Romano was a political prodigy who joined a party at age 15 and began his political career in 2014 as a 21-year-old member of the Nanacamilpa city council
Nanacamilpa (population 18,700) is in the western part of Tlaxcala, Mexico’s smallest state by area and its fifth smallest by population
It borders México state and Hidalgo but is almost entirely surrounded by the state of Puebla
Police reported Romano’s death early Friday morning after receiving a 911 call from his family
his body was found by relatives after 11 p.m
Thursday with a gunshot wound to his head and a gun at his feet
The State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) reported that the Public Ministry has opened an investigation into the cause of death
His mother reportedly told police Romano was facing personal problems
so initial media reports speculated his death was a suicide
Moreover, at 5:49 p.m. on Thursday, he posted a message on Facebook in which he stressed that people are not perfect and that elected leaders need help
“One person can’t do it alone,” said his message
many things can be achieved and [the city will] move forward
We know there are people who think differently
such as one person who wrote: “The townspeople cannot do it alone
but because of you and the minds you surrounded yourself with
Tlaxcala Governor Lorena Cuéllar sent condolences to the family and publicly described Romano as a great human being and a tireless fighter for Nanacamilpa
“His example of service and love for his people will always be remembered,” she said
the mayor’s office was shut down by police and other public security officials claiming they hadn’t received their last two paychecks
Some of them had reportedly gone on strike
They also said Romano had failed to deliver vouchers for children’s school supplies that had been promised
The Hyundai Archery World Cup is archery’s annual international tournament circuit
bringing together the world’s best archers to compete across a season of elite events around the globe
the tour enters its 19th season in 2025 with four stages (compared to three in Olympic years)
culminating in a season-ending apotheosis where only the best of the best are invited to compete.
Stage winners automatically qualify for the grand final, with remaining spots filled based on Hyundai Archery World Cup Ranking points
Men’s and women’s Hyundai Archery World Cup Champions are crowned at the final event in two bowstyles – recurve, which is the Olympic discipline, and compound – while stages also host events for teams and mixed teams
Finals are broadcast worldwide on archery+ and the circuit offers the largest prize purse of any international archery tournament
with each champion receiving 30,000 CHF in 2025
the primary rule change is the removal of an early elimination round for high-attendance stages
with only the top 64 qualifiers advancing to matchplay and no byes granted
Thirty-two archers compete at each Hyundai Archery World Cup Final
with eight in each of the four competition categories: recurve men
One of these eight spots is reserved for an archer from the host nation (which is China in 2025), up to four are awarded to stage winners – though this number decreases if an archer wins multiple events – and the remaining places are allocated based on the Hyundai Archery World Cup Ranking after the final stage of the season
This marks the 19th season of the Hyundai Archery World Cup
except for 2020 when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Sara Lopez (Colombia) is the most successful archer in the history of the tour, having won a record ninth Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion trophy in 2025. The next closest are Brady Ellison (USA) and Kim Woojin (Korea)
Lopez also leads the individual stage wins leaderboard with 12 victories, followed by Ellison and Mike Schloesser (Netherlands)
Retired compound archer Braden Gellenthien (USA) holds the record for the most podium finishes across all events (including team and mixed team) with 67, ahead of Woojin with 56 and Brady with 54.
Competition formatOn the Hyundai Archery World Cup, recurve archers compete over a distance of 70 metres and shoot at targets measuring 122 centimetres in diameter, while compound archers compete over a distance of 50 metres and shoot at targets measuring 80 centimetres in diameter.
Each stage of the circuit begins with a qualifying round of 72 arrows and the total result is used to seed athletes (and teams) for eliminations matches.
These play out in a head-to-head bracket, the winner of each match advancing and the loser being eliminated until just four archers remain. The final four in each category then compete for the stage victory in the televised arena. (Team finals are also broadcast.)
The Hyundai Archery World Cup Final is a matchplay event and there is no qualifying round.
Instead, the eight archers who qualify in each category are put into a random draw to decide the seedings and they shoot a televised head-to-head bracket, from quarterfinals to final, to decide who will be named Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion.
Recurve matches are decided using the set system. Archers shoot sets of three arrows and the archer with the highest score in the set receives two set points; both are awarded one set point if the set is tied. The first to six set points wins the match.
(Recurve team matches work in almost the same way. Teams shoot six arrows per set and mixed teams shoot four arrows per set. The first team or mixed team to five set points wins the match.)
Compound matches are decided using cumulative scoring. Archers shoot 15 arrows, split into five ends of three, and the archer with the highest total points score wins the match.
(Compound team matches work in almost the same way except teams shoot 24 arrows, split into four ends of six, and mixed teams shoot 16 arrows, split into four ends of four.)
The most exciting moment in archery is a tiebreak or single-arrow shoot-off. This occurs when two recurve archers are tied on five set points after five sets or when two compound archers are tied on total score after 15 arrows. Each archer shoots one arrow and the archer whose arrow lands closest to the middle of the target wins the match.
Despite the significant distances involved, archery is a sport of exceptionally small margins.
The accuracy of athletes on the Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit is mind-boggling. While an arrow might travel 70 metres downrange (for recurve, compound is 50 metres), flying in an arc that lifts it up to six metres above the ground, a millimetre on the target can make all the difference.
Much of archery is a mental game and the physical differences from each arrow to each arrow can be minuscule – although critical.
There are key visible indicators to watch out for. Rhythm, release and reaction tell the story of each shot. The time an archer takes to aim reveals the pressure they’re feeling, the moment the arrow leaves the bow shows if they’re in control and often, the look on an athlete’s face when the shot is in the air says just as much as the points it scores on the target.
Archery boils down to: Draw, aim and shoot. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? It’s not.
The international season begins in April with the first stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.
The American was flawless on the shooting line throughout the day
dropping perfect scores in all three of his respective matches (quarterfinal
It was Lutz’ fourth time in a World Cup Final but before Saturday afternoon he had never made it past the first round in the ultimatum of archery’s premier international circuit
“I don’t even know how I feel now,” Lutz told archery+ soon after his victory where he also revealed an illness leading up to it
I got sick the past couple of weeks so I feel weak
but I had to keep 100 per cent focused and I think that’s why the scores were what they were.”
“This is the first time I’ve ever made it past the first round so
I got that done and then there was no looking back.”
With eight of the world’s best men compound archers in appearance
and athletes regularly shooting perfect scores is something of little surprise at this level
who qualified through his world ranking position at number three
made sure of that from the very beginning.
After his first 150 of the day defeating Shanghai 2024 gold medallist Nico Wiener, Lutz was met by ‘Mister Perfect’ himself, Mike Schloesser
with the world number one having won four World Cup Finals previously
But the 26-year-old was not fazed one bit by the history of his Dutch counterpart
pressure or any other variables that often come in elite archery
Two nines in the second and fourth ends by recently crowned 2024 World Field Champion Schloesser paved the way for Lutz to guarantee a place on the podium as he won 150-148
Had it not been hard enough, reigning World Cup Champion Fullerton was what stood in the way between Lutz and gold, with the Dane having also coming off a perfect score victory himself against India’s Prathamesh Bhalchandra Fuge
snappy draw took Denmark’s Fullerton all the way to a deciding final end with both not missing a 10 in the four prior.
World record holder Fullerton was the first to blink, dropping a costly nine in his second shot to give Lutz a golden opportunity which he took as he fired his final arrow of the day into the centre ring, his 45th consecutive 10 of the day, capping off a remarkable 2024 season which also saw him become the Indoor World Series Champion.
I’m super happy to end it this way,” he added
One of Lutz’s victims en route to glory Schloesser, who had his wife and Netherlands recurve archer Gaby Schloesser in the coaching box, picked himself back up in the bronze medal match to convincingly defeat Fuge 150-146, with Mister Perfect winning his second straight bronze in World Cup Finals.
The action continues later in Tlaxcala with the compound women’s finals taking place before tomorrow’s recurve finals.
especially in precision sports like archery win by putting their emotions to the side in one way or another
and focusing on the process – the draw
If you suddenly start reflecting on whether this is a crucial match or shot that will define your career
tension and fear will start sending the arrows a long way from the middle
Kim Woojin, more than any other athlete, seems to have refined this to a peak artform. His teammate in Paris, Lee Woo Seok
saw him first of all on TV as a young man and asked: “How does he do it
the same breezy relaxed attitude producing the same standards
When he won last year’s Tlaxcala 2024 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final not long after the triumph in Paris
it seemed almost entirely routine – it was
his fifth finals victory in total across 12 years
He hasn’t always won, and his long journey to individual Olympic gold has been the rockiest road of all. But when Woojin really shows up – his remarkable, crushing World Cup Final victory in Tlaxcala in 2022 being a case in point – it’s over
His three gold medals in Paris, adding to the two he had previously won in Rio and Tokyo, made him the most decorated Korean Olympian of all time – in any sport. He also surpassed, in purely medal-counting terms, the achievements of a string of legendary Korean women including Kim Soo-Nyung
For the most decorated Olympic sportsman of an entire country
Woojin appears almost distressingly normal
We know he likes golf (a very common hobby among Korean Olympians
Since 2021 he has become a family man; married with a son
But Woojin doesn’t like to say a great deal about what he does so well beyond the usual polite platitudes
and not out of shyness or arrogance (he has been significantly more talkative on Korean TV recently)
and none as dry – and accurate – as when he said in Paris “I think you can now call me the greatest of all time”
after winning the final match and the men’s individual title
Of course, it’s a little too much to expect him to be gnomic and brilliantly entertaining as well. Lim Sihyeon was more illuminating talking about her mixed team teammate
again in Paris: “I have been on this team for two years
Whatever this season brings for Kim Woojin
perhaps no athlete in history has developed their talent and maintained a mental game across a generation
he said: ”When I look at my archery career
and my goal is to leave an unforgettable mark in the history of world archery.” (Something he has
One final glimpse into Woojin’s world: in Paris, when facing defending Olympic Champion Mete Gazoz in the quarterfinals, he was asked what he was going to do to prepare for such a high-profile, critical match.
“Nothing more, nothing less, just as I am, I’m ready,” the 32-year-old replied.
Quietly, it is a statement that perfectly sums him and his talent up; work hard, prepare as well as you can, and then just be, just execute without fear or regret. No-one has ever done it better.

Bold predictionWho else but Lim Sihyeon
There are no superlatives left to describe the performances of the 21-year-old Korean
Lim has an impressive run of just one defeat – to Ariana Zairi in Antalya last June – in 20 international matches since she lost in the gold medal match to former teammate Choi Misun at the Bangkok 2023 Asian Archery Championships in November.
With an average per arrow close to 9.5, and unbeaten in three shoot-offs this season, she really is to be the woman to beat as the season draws to a close, no doubt.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Sunday that Mexico is “perhaps” the most democratic country in the world given that it will hold judicial elections in 2025
Speaking at an event in Tlaxcala, Sheinbaum highlighted that a number of constitutional reforms were approved by Congress in recent months
allowing Mexico to “recover the social sense” and the “patriotic sense of our Constitution.”
this year something unique in Mexico and the whole world was approved
thanks to one of the reforms to the Constitution
the judicial power will be elected by the people of Mexico,” she said
eliciting cheers and applause from attendees of the event in Panotla
Sheinbaum noted that Mexico’s president and lawmakers are already “democratically elected” before emphasizing that the nation’s judges will soon be chosen by citizens as well
magistrates and Supreme Court justices will be elected democratically
This makes us perhaps the most democratic country there is on the face of Earth,” she said
“Our adversaries say there is authoritarianism but how [can there be] if it is the people who decide
Democracy is government of the people by the people for the people
And now the judicial power will serve the people of Mexico and the nation as it should have always done,” Sheinbaum said
A second round of judicial elections in 2027 will follow those scheduled to take place on June 1
Critics assert that the election of judges will lead to the politicization of Mexico’s judiciary
they argue that Mexico’s courts will come to be dominated by judges sympathetic to the ruling Morena party’s agenda
thus removing an essential check on government power
Candidates for judgeships will be selected by the president
the Congress — which is currently dominated by Morena — and the judiciary itself
citizens will elect a total of 881 federal judges
including nine justices who will sit on the bench of the Supreme Court
“On June 1 next year,” Sheinbaum said on Sunday
“together we will elect justices of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.”
“It is something historic,” she added
The government has also faced criticism over some of the other reforms that were recently approved by Congress, including one that eliminated seven watchdog agencies
Government critics have long argued that the incorporation of autonomous agencies into ministries and other federal departments would eliminate important counterweights to executive power and represent a backward step for democracy
Sheinbaum has said that the reform will lead to “more transparency” and help to eliminate corruption while generating significant savings for the public purse
has won a Guinness World Record for serving the greatest variety of tacos de canasta (basket tacos) in one place
The state gathered over 150 taqueros (taco makers) from the municipality of Natívitas
to serve 186 varieties of tacos during a Sunday event held along the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City
The tacos featured traditional fillings like papa (potatoes)
chicharrón (pressed pork rinds) and green mole
as well as nontraditional flavor combinations like frijoles with cranberries and walnuts
A total of 30,000 tacos — free of charge — were served to passersby in under 30 minutes
a local official from the Tourism Ministry (Sectur)
told the news agency Latinus that the tacos de canasta have created a sense of community and identity for Tlaxcala
eight out of 10 residents in Natívitas have had some level of involvement in the basket tacos economy since 1940
According to the newspaper El Universal, the taco de canasta dates back to the early 1900s, created to be an accessible meal for low-income families and peasants. Unlike other tacos which are filled with meat
basket tacos are smaller and are typically filled with potatoes and beans
the consumption of tacos de canasta grew amongst all strata of society
a taquero in the municipality of San Vicente Xiloxochitla
reportedly began selling tacos out of a basket on his bicycle
The ease of transport and the few ingredients required for their preparation inspired others to migrate to Mexico City and sell tacos from a basket on a bicycle
tacos de canasta are some of the most popular
affordable and easy-to-find street food in Mexico
He defeated fellow Korean Lee Woo Seok 7-3 in set points to cap off a memorable 2024 season which saw him win all three Olympic gold medals in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
Tlaxcala is a city that clearly bodes well for Kim as he won his last World Cup in the same city two years ago when he beat Miguel Alvarino Garcia
I’m very happy,” the 2021 World Archery Champion said in his post match interview
“I will try to win not only these five times
I think it made the match even more thrilling and intense
Kim’s Olympic individuals triumph this summer was one of the finest archery matches to date against fellow great Brady Ellison and on the face of this result
it looks like it was business as usual for the 32-year-old
it was far from his normal clinical self in the first two matches of the morning session as he struggled to get his bow’s sight right
Paris 2024 men’s team silver medallist Thomas Chirault took the initiative in an overcast day in Tlaxcala as it was he who dropped the first perfect score of the match in the starting end
but the Frenchman failed to capitalise on Kim’s inability to regularly find the 10-ring
Despite never hitting a 30, Kim shot enough 10s to oust Chirault from the contest 7-3 which led him into facing Matias Grande
Kim faltered in the first two ends dropping 27 and 28
well below his exceptionally high standards
and was down 1-3 to Grande but came back in the third end with his first 30 of the day
Grande shot two consecutive 28s losing the lead he worked so hard to build and a tied final end at 29 apiece ended any chances of a guaranteed podium finish for the smiley 20-year-old who will certainly be in a World Cup Final once again.
Korea’s dominance in recurve was on show in Les Invalides and it was once again two months on from Paris as Kim was forced to battle Lee
Kim lost to him in the final at Yecheon
and the pair’s camaraderie meant there was more of a relaxed feeling on the shooting line than normal in the season finale of archery’s premier international circuit
Whatever slight issues he had prior seemingly disappeared as Kim shot exceptionally well
slightly bettering Lee’s ten 10s in a match that had an average arrow of 9.6
no excessive screaming from the three-time World Champion once his victory was confirmed
just a humble acknowledgement of his friend Lee and another reminder that we are currently witnessing an all time great in his prime
“I think it will be even more fun next year," Kim said with a wry smile when asked what it was like to compete against Lee once again
Last year’s World Cup Champion Marcus D’Almeida lost the chance to retain the gold after losing to silver medallist Lee who he beat in Hermosillo 2023
but the Brazilian didn’t leave Mexico empty handed as he dispatched World Cup Final debutant Grande 6-2 for bronze
The only matches left in the Tlaxcala 2024 World Cup Final are for the recurve women, which you can watch this afternoon on archery+.

Unfortunately missing from the recurve men’s line-up of the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Tlaxcala is reigning Olympic and World Cup runner-up Brady Ellison
who failed to qualify for the first time since 2010
Had the final of the Games not been decided against him by just a few millimetres
Ellison would have received the wildcard due to the Olympic Champion
But it was Kim Woojin who was crowned in Paris
And in Brady’s absence at the circuit’s end-of-season showdown
The Korean’s biggest rivals, however, might be his teammate Lee Woo Seok, who also podiumed twice at his maiden Olympics this summer with team gold and individual bronze, the defending World Cup Champion Marcus D’Almeida, as well as Thomas Chirault
freshly crowned Olympic team silver medallist at his home event
Finals for the recurve men in Tlaxcala start at 10h00 (local) on Sunday 20 October. Live stream on archery+
Bold predictionWoojin can catch Brady atop the men with the most trophies
Kim Woojin became the greatest Olympic archer and the most successful Korean Olympian of all time when he collected his fifth gold medal on 4 August
he beat his greatest rival Brady Ellison in a shoot-off measured in millimetres
But the much-awaited revenge will have to sit back
as the US archer did not qualify for the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in 2024
Woojin looks unrivalled in Tlaxcala as he aims for a fifth trophy – he won the event in 2012
Would he crown his season with another win
the Korean would catch the American at the top of the list of male athletes with the most titles since the circuit’s launch in 2006
Sara Lopez holds the all-time record as she enters the compound women’s competition defending her eighth title from last year in Hermosillo.
Everything is poised for an historic night in Tlaxcala
with the impressive event presented by Zanfer Boxing
who join the efforts of the State and Governor Lorena Cuellar Cisneros
to promote sport and culture with four fabulous World Boxing Council fights
Surrounding this historic night we commemorate the former world champion Rafael Limón
a boxer who raised the name of Tlaxcala and who was also part of the Mexican army
Rafael had a short career in the amateur field
but quickly climbed into professional boxing
where he dazzled with his great punching power
with which he won the WBC super featherweight world title
Rafael says that boxing is his life and with it
saw the world and received the admiration plus adulation of fans
Thanks to boxing I paid for my four children’s studies and they are all successful
Thanks to the World Boxing Council and Don José Sulaiman
Possessor of a poleaxing punch Rafael “Bazooka” Limón was a born knockout artist
“Bazooka” is the only world champion that the beautiful lands of Tlaxcala have given us…thus far

The Tlaxcala Bullring will be transformed into a city-center amphitheater of beach volleyball, as athletes serve, set, spike and dig their way towards the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
There will be one quota available to the best pair in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. It will be the last chance for National Olympic Committees to secure beach volleyball quotas for Paris 2024.
Canada has already secured a quota for one women’s pair, while Cuba has obtained a quota for one men’s pair. Both nations will try to secure more quotas in Tlaxcala, while other countries will try to secure their first quotas in the sport.
The United States of America has already secured the maximum quota of two pairs per gender, so they will watch from home to find out who they may have to face in Paris.
Read on to find more about the athletes to watch, how to watch them, and the tournament schedule for the 2024 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Olympic Qualification Tournament.
As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
Canada’s Heather Bansley and Sophie Bukovec will enter the tournament as prohibited favorites
The pair finished a few points short of securing a quota through the FIVB Olympic Ranking
their record of podium finishes at Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge and Futures tournaments suggest they will be a difficult team to beat in Tlaxcala
Bansley and Bukovec’s toughest challenge might be home favorites Atenas Gutiérrez and Susana Torres of Mexico
both have experience at the international level
Allanis Navas and María González of Puerto Rico will also attempt to make history in Tlaxcala
as they chase Puerto Rico’s first-ever Olympic quota in women’s beach volleyball
The pair finished seventh at the 2023 Pan American Games
the highest placing of any Caribbean nation in the women’s event
They will look to build off that result in Tlaxcala
pursuing upset victories over their Canadian and Mexican rivals
Suriname and the US Virgin Islands will also look to secure a quota place for Paris 2024

In the absence of Jorge Alayo and Noslen Díaz of Cuba
who already secured a quota via the FIVB Olympic Rankings
the men’s tournament may be more open than expected
Canada’s Samuel Schachter and Daniel Dearing enter the tournament with the highest world ranking out of the twelve competing pairs
a position buoyed by their 17th-place finish at the Tlaxcala 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships
The pair will attempt to do something no Canadian pairing accomplished three years ago
He convinced Dearing to come out of retirement and have a crack at qualifying for Paris 2024
The pair has now reached the do-or-die stage of their gambit
with one final chance to secure a quota place for the Olympic Games Paris 2024
the pairing split after they failed to qualify for Tokyo 2020
He spent the last two years playing with Miguel Sarabia
The pair won a gold medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games and played at two world championships
he will team up with Ricardo Galindo in an attempt to return to the Olympic Games
but Mexico isn’t the only country shaking things up in Tlaxcala
Nicaragua will enter the pairing of Rubén Mora and Dany López
Mora has switched partners repeatedly in the last two years
He won a silver medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games with Jefferson Cascante
and played with López at the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships
He and López will now attempt to become the first athletes from Nicaragua to secure a quota for beach volleyball at the Olympic Games
Trinidad and Tobago and the US Virgin Islands will also try to secure a quota for Paris 2024

Pollution from a cluster of foreign factories is contributing to a threat to public health
who say the country is prioritising economic growth over the environment
under-construction houses pepper streets with names such as Frankfurt
an industrial district covering about 4,000 square kilometres that has been a hub for Mexican and global multinationals – notably German conglomerates – since the 1960s
Spanning 47 municipalities in the state of Tlaxcala and 22 in the state of Puebla
Running through the area is the Atoyac River
But it is not a river that the community is proud of
“People used to wash clothes as the water was crystal clear
and they even bathed in the river,” remembers María Ocotlán
a Mexican snack shop owner on Munich Street
The deterioration has been going on for 20 years.”
The Upper Atoyac basin is one of 30 regions identified as being in a state of socio-environmental and health emergency in Mexico
will have to confront multinational companies accused by campaigners of harming the river
among others” for “leaving its mark on the territory and people’s bodies”
In October 2023, the National Council of Science and Technology (Conahcyt), a public body of the Mexican government, acknowledged in a report that the region’s pollutants posed severe threats to public health
The report showed that the mortality rate from chronic kidney diseases among people aged 15 to 49 in Tlaxcala regions within the Upper Atoyac basin was almost five times higher than the national average
High mortality rates from acute leukaemias in individuals under 19 were also more common in the southern part of the basin
where the levels of metals and arsenic in the river are significantly higher

Figures show that 219 companies discharged wastewater into the Atoyac River basin every day in 2022
Photograph: Alejandro Saldívar“Over the last decades
the inhabitants of the Upper Atoyac basin have witnessed the constant increase of industrial settlements such as the arrival of Volkswagen in 1965
the creation of the Independencia Petrochemical Complex in 1969 or the installation of the Audi company in 2016
“The region witnessed an economic development of apparent prosperity
but the organisation of global mercantile processes that privileged the profitability of transnational companies promoted health
social and environmental ‘externalities’ with serious effects for local communities.”
The report noted: “The scientific evidence presented in this first report demonstrates that these high [mortality] rates are caused by exposure to toxins and polluting processes from industries located in the region
chemical and textile industries have the highest pollutant emissions.”

In 2011, local communities filed a complaint with the Mexican National Human Rights Commission. That led to a recommendation in 2017 urging the state governments of Puebla and Tlaxcala to implement measures to guarantee their right to a healthy environment
the prosecutors enforced another 13 closures
mainly in San Martín Texmelucan and Puebla
Last year, the Mexican secretariat of environment and natural resources, along with the National Water Commission (Conagua), released a report acknowledging that out of 18 locations along the Atoyac River in Puebla and Tlaxcala
219 companies discharged wastewater into the Atoyac River basin every day in 2022
Although multinationals from several countries pour their waters into the Atoyac
Last year, Puebla was the leading Mexican exporter to Germany, moving goods worth $3.66bn (£2.82bn). A report from Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy on foreign direct investment (FDI) showed that from January to June
it received $942m worth of German investment
Conahcyt says that the heavy metals
and pesticides dumped in the Atoyac by industry are the reason behind the high rates of diseases related to pollution among the local population – rates that surpass Mexico’s national average
“According to data from the pollutant release and transfer register
the area with the highest emissions is the Zahuapan area
a sub-basin of the Atoyac River located in Tlaxcala,” the report says
there are important chemical and other industries of various kinds that are also highly polluting.”

BASF extracts approximately 1,750 cubic meters of water a day and discharges almost 194,000 cubic meters of wastewater annually directly into the Atoyac River
BASF says it operates its Puebla site “in full compliance with local and federal laws and upholds a strong commitment to environmental stewardship across all its locations”
The company highlights that since its establishment
the Puebla facility has operated a wastewater treatment plant 24 hours a day as part of its commitment to safe production for people and the environment

which is responsible for its final discharge
“Bayer has maintained an open-door and transparency policy
and all interested parties about its high standards of environmental protection
as well as its wastewater treatment process,” the company says
adding: “The site complies with all applicable regulations and with the company’s global international standards.”
Mexico has made political decisions based on achieving economic growth
a researcher on ecology and natural resources at the National Autonomous University of Mexico
says that Mexican legislation allows high pollution levels and does not specify criteria to verify who is polluting
“Industries must keep their pollutants below certain levels
but those limits are absurdly high,” he says
discharges are carried out into common drains
making it impossible to know who is responsible.”
In addition to facing increasing pushback from federal authorities and affected communities in Mexico
the German and other European corporations blamed for damaging the Atoyac basin will soon be under greater scrutiny from the EU
a new regulation strengthening European companies’ responsibility for environmental practices beyond EU borders

MEPs approved a text that entered into force in July and will affect companies with more than 1,000 employees and an annual turnover of more than €450m (£376m)
The German conglomerates in the Atoyac will fall within the scope of the EU regulation from 2027 onwards
when they will be obliged to integrate due diligence into their business policies to comply with the directive
BASF publicly welcomed the new regulations, while Bayer joined a group of companies that publicly condemned German chancellor Olaf Scholz’s manoeuvres to water down the directive
says these companies no longer opposed the new directive “partly because of the concessions agreed between member states”
“we are in the direction they wanted to go.”

The Pacific coast of the southern state of Oaxaca is known as an idyllic part of Mexico
a region where domestic and foreign tourists alike frolic on the beautiful beaches and enjoy the laidback lifestyle with nary a care in the world
due to the occurrence of crimes that are sadly all too common in Mexico: mass kidnappings and murder
In January, seven young men disappeared near the popular tourist town of Puerto Escondido and haven’t been seen since
Authorities linked the abduction and probable murders to drug trafficking
but almost two months later the details of the case remain murky
10 young people from the central Mexican state of Tlaxcala were abducted in separate incidents in Zipolite
where Mexico’s only official nudist beach is located
also situated on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast
They were on vacation in Oaxaca when they disappeared
The dismembered bodies of nine of those people — four women and five men aged 19 to 29 — were found on March 2 in and near an abandoned vehicle located hundreds of kilometers away in a municipality in Puebla on that state’s border with Oaxaca
A motive for the abduction and murder of the young people — reportedly students — has not been disclosed by government officials
but authorities are investigating the possible involvement of municipal police
Authorities have also said that the abduction of some of the victims could be related to a dispute between rival criminal groups
There is speculation that the victims were involved in criminal activities
One person has been arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of the young people from Tlaxcala
The lone survivor of the most recent kidnappings in coastal Oaxaca
was located in the state of Puebla early last week
She reportedly told authorities that she and her friend Angie Pérez were abducted by municipal police
21-year-old Lesly Noya and 23-year-old Jacqueline Meza disappeared in Zipolite
Raul González and his girlfriend Noemí Yamileth López
Meza was dining at a restaurant near the beach when she was abducted
according to the young woman’s mother

she was kidnapped and until now we don’t know anything,” Andrea Cazares said on social media
according to a report published by the newspaper El País on Monday
Cazares added that “two little ones aged five and three” are waiting for Meza
presumably the mother of the young children
two other families were “screaming in desperation” due to the disappearance of two young women in Huatulco
Those families accused municipal police of taking 19-year-old Brenda Salas and 29-year-old Angie Pérez to an unknown location
The two women were allegedly beaten before their enforced disappearance
Four other young people from Tlaxcala — Guillermo Cortés
Marco Antonio Flores and Rolando Armando Evaristo — also recently disappeared in coastal Oaxaca
Exactly where they were abducted and where they were subsequently taken to is unknown
the remains of nine people were discovered in or near an abandoned vehicle in the municipality of San José Miahuatlán
located in southeastern Puebla on that state’s border with Oaxaca
The municipality is located around 400 kilometers from the coastal region of Oaxaca where the 10 young people from Tlaxcala disappeared
El País and other media outlets reported that the remains belong to nine of the ten young people abducted in coastal Oaxaca. The newspaper El Imparcial reported that authorities identified the nine victims and confirmed they were from Tlaxcala
The bodies reportedly had bullet wounds and showed signs of torture
El País said that “no one has confirmed” that all of the victims previously knew each other
but “their lives came together in the end.”
— Unidad de Búsqueda de Personas No Localizadas (@FGEO_DNOL) March 1, 2025
The newspaper noted that the victims came from four municipalities in Tlaxcala that are in close proximity to each other
“… In a strange event that no authority has yet explained
the attackers left one survivor: Brenda Salas,” El País said
El País also reported that it was not a “coincidence” that the bodies were dumped in Puebla
“attention was diverted from the Oaxacan coast and also from its authorities,” the newspaper said
The newspaper El Universal reported that five of the victims were buried immediately after their bodies were returned to their families in Tlaxcala last week
El Universal said that the relatives of the victims all declined requests for interviews
Last Thursday, the Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) announced that it was investigating the “possible involvement” of municipal police officers in the disappearance of four of the young people from Tlaxcala: Angie Pérez
The FGEO said it had obtained information that suggests that the abduction of the four aforesaid people “could be related to a dispute between criminal cells.”
“With the aim of ensuring that direct and indirect victims have an adequate justice process that allows them to know the truth about what happened
the FGEO is carrying out ministerial work to determine if there is any level of involvement from municipal police officers,” the Attorney General’s Office said
said on Monday that one person had been arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of the young people from Tlaxcala
He didn’t reveal the identity of the person who was detained

Romero did say that the person had faced a court hearing
and revealed to authorities key information about the crimes committed
Romero rejected comparisons to the case of the 43 students who disappeared in the state of Guerrero in 2014
The disappearance and murder of the young people from Tlaxcala didn’t occur within “a context of social struggle,” he said
Romero also rejected assertions that Huatulco is an unsafe place to visit
The official said that the FGEO would provide a detailed report on the case in the coming hours
but as of midday Tuesday said document had not been made available to the public
On the same weekend the young people from Tlaxcala were abducted
Huatulco businessman and former mayoral aspirant José Alfredo Lavariega was murdered while driving his car in coastal Oaxaca
A note accusing him of being a thief was left in his car
The Reforma newspaper reported last week that authorities are seeking to determine whether there is a link between Lavariega
who was known as “El Jocha,” and the young people whose bodies were found in and near the vehicle located in Puebla
is that the young people from Tlaxcala traveled to Oaxaca to stay in Lavariega’s hotel
El País noted that there have been attempts to link the murder of Lavariega on March 1 to the disappearance of the young people from Tlaxcala
The British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail is the main source of the theory that there is a link between Lavariega and the nine people found dead in Puebla on March 2
In what was described as an “exclusive” report published last Thursday
The Daily Mail said it was told by an official at the “prosecutor’s office” — presumably the Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office — that “José ‘El Jocha’ Lavariega invited the victims
members of ‘Los Brujos’ [crime gang]
to spend time in Oaxaca” at his hotel
The newspaper described Lavariega as “an aspiring mayor-turned-gang leader” and said he “committed a cardinal sin in the Mexican criminal world that led to the deaths of nine students.”
It quoted the unnamed prosecutor’s office official as saying that Lavariega and the young people from Tlaxcala were “friends.”
The Daily Mail said that “Lavariega eventually led the young adults to their own carnage by giving them the green light” to commit crimes in coastal Oaxaca
and they subsequently “set out to commit a wave of muggings and thefts.”
it did not sit well with one of the drug-selling criminal groups that operates in Oaxaca,” the newspaper said
“… ‘And then what happened
happened,’ Daily Mail quoted the official as saying in reference to “the horrific murders and mutilations.”
As of midday Tuesday authorities in Mexico have not publicly said or suggested that the young people from Tlaxcala were involved in criminal activities
The newspaper Reforma and other Mexican media outlets have also reported on The Daily Mail’s article and video
El País said that in the wake of the abduction and murders of the young people from Tlaxcala
“an old pattern has been repeated that was created by the government of [former president] Felipe Calderón in the so-called war on drugs: the criminalization of victims of forced disappearance.”
The “justification,” the newspaper said
they were surely up to something; that if they were killed
and why Washington and Beijing may tacitly agree on the need to pull apart
Stages will take place monthly from April to July in Central Florida (USA), Shanghai (China), Antalya (Türkiye) and Madrid (Spain). Stage winners and consistent finishers book places at the season finale and a shot at the 400,000+ CHF prize fund.
There are minimal alterations to the rules in 2025, the most significant being the removal of an early elimination round in the case of high attendance at a stage. Only the top 64 qualifiers in each category will advance to matchplay and there are no byes.
The biggest change to the World Cup rules only comes into force in 2026.
From the start of next season, which will be the 20th for archery’s annual international tour, archers must have recorded a score that exceeds a minimum competition standard at a world ranking event or registered national championships to participate in a World Cup stage.
The standard is set at 640 points for recurve men, 610 for recurve women, 674 for compound men and 654 for compound women over the 72-arrow qualifying round.
Shanghai hosts a stage of the tour for the 15th time in 2025, Antalya for the 18th.
The Hyundai Archery World Cup Final has never previously been held in China. The final returns to Mexico for another three years from 2026.
Haines City in Central Florida becomes the fourth US town to host a leg of the circuit after Odgen (stage in 2010-2012), Salt Lake City (stage in 2017-2018) and Yankton (final in 2021).
Spain has never held a World Cup event before. Madrid did have the World Archery Youth Championships in 2019.
The World Cup enters in 19th season in 2025. It would be the 20th had the event not been cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
