Arsenal's aspirations for the remainder of this campaign rest entirely on success in Europe and they head to the French capital needing to overturn a 1-0 loss from the first leg after Bournemouth battled back from Declan Rice's opener with two goals in the second half but Arteta believes such a loss could ultimately work in their favour "It didn't create the right momentum," he said "Let's use all of that on Wednesday the Gunners need to be better at defending set-pieces While they were far from at their best against Bournemouth they were in control of the game as the visitors did not manage a shot on target for the first hour But their first such attempt resulted in an equaliser as Dean Huijsen headed in from Antoine Semenyo's long throw A set-piece was again Arsenal's undoing for the winner as a corner was flicked on to the far post for Evanilson to bundle in Of the goals Arsenal have conceded this season 38.7% have come from set-piece situations - the most in the English top flight Arsenal have to score on Wednesday and then somehow keep out a PSG side that has scored a league-high 42 goals in 16 Ligue 1 games at home so far this season In their past five Premier League games Arsenal have taken the lead but in four of those games they failed to hold on to that advantage In total they have dropped 21 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season their joint-most in a single campaign (also 21 in 2019-20) The other concern to arise from Saturday's defeat was that after Bournemouth took the lead in the 75th minute the Gunners did not manage a single attempt on or off target looking at that you just cannot see it [Arsenal beating PSG]," former West Ham goalkeeper Rob Green said on BBC Radio 5 live "You take Declan Rice out of the equation of this team and you've got a group of players bereft of confidence and ideas on how to score goals and have an incisive edge "There's work to do and so little time to do it." Arsenal 'nowhere near' their standards - Arteta For the vast majority of the season Arsenal were Liverpool's main challengers for the Premier League title but their disappointing run of form recently means they are clinging on to second place They are three points ahead of Manchester City in third but if Newcastle beat Brighton on Sunday that gap will be down to two win at home to Liverpool and sixth-placed Nottingham Forest triumph at Crystal Palace on Monday then they will be four points behind With three games to go that would mean a finish in the top five could be under threat for the Gunners "Are the wheels off at Arsenal?" ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 live but Arteta knows the Gunners need to be much-improved from their recent performances to avoid their season fizzling out even more than it is already threatening to do so because mathematically we are not qualified [for the Champions League]," he said "We haven't had the right to finish second yet Listen to the latest Football Daily podcast Get football news sent straight to your phone To load Comments you need to enable JavaScript in your browser View comments | 1449Top storiesHis stats are better but will Yamal build legacy to rival Messi 'Calamity keeper' or 'human wall' - which Donnarumma will Arsenal face Premier League reaction & Champions League race latest as Forest draw at Palace The final series of Man Like Mobeen has arrived John Simm stars in the provocative 90s drama Warm-hearted comedy with Ben Miller and Sally Phillips Follow two ambitious river restoration projects Who has made Troy's Premier League team of the week Trailblazer Zhao set to take snooker to 'another level' in China Alexander-Arnold leaves as modern Liverpool great - but fans will feel hurt Zhao beats Williams in historic final - highlights VideoZhao beats Williams in historic final - highlights 'Scheffler and DeChambeau wins further raise US PGA excitement levels' Match-fixing scandal to Crucible champion - fall and rise of Zhao 'We need to take a look at ourselves' - Arsenal stalling at wrong time Palmer's brilliance could be key moment in Chelsea's Champions League quest Europa League 'papering over cracks' for Man Utd - Rooney VideoEuropa League 'papering over cracks' for Man Utd - Rooney Ask Me Anything the new BBC Sport service designed to serve you Bayern's 'James Bond' - how Kane clinched his first trophy Nine bolters with a shot of making the Lions squad How 'absolutely outstanding' Palmer 'destroyed' Liverpool VideoHow 'absolutely outstanding' Palmer 'destroyed' Liverpool Still number one & 'sparring' with Draper - return of Sinner Saints 'punch' favourites Leinster in game for the ages VideoVardy the best £1m ever spent - Shearer Poppy's tears Elton John & Happy Gilmore - McIlroy on Jimmy Fallon show Two opposing views on football's transgender ban Copyright © 2025 BBC. There was plenty for Mikel Arteta to digest after our disappointing 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday After the game the manager faced the media at Emirates Stadium Here’s a full transcript from his post-match press conference… On his view of Evanilson’s goal given by VAR: I've just seen a few images and it looks very different to the decision but they made that decision. On the team performance:We started and we did the most difficult one to score the goal I think after that we had four or five very open situations to score the second one the way we've done it in the two set-pieces that we have conceded again So they're going to punish you and a team like Bournemouth especially with sets and plays that were struggling in the final minutes And we weren't able to get the result that we wanted On dropping points from winning positions: Well I think every game probably would have a different answer to that Certainly what happened today is that if you defend the way we've done in the league you're going to get punished It doesn't matter if you are ahead or behind in the scoring  On taking this feeling into Wednesday:Well we certainly wanted to create a really good vibe a positive result would really help us to build what we wanted towards Wednesday So what we have created now is a lot of rage frustration and a bad feeling in the tummy So make sure that we use that for Wednesday to have a massive performance in Paris They won the league so they have the luxury to do that We haven't because we still have a lot to do in the Premier League But we have four days and I'm sure we'll be fully recovered and at our best to play the game.On work to do to guarantee a top five finish:Well because mathematically we are not qualified we haven't earned the right to finish second yet yeah.On if the team loses motivation in the Premier League:We try not to The way we have prepared the game and today we talked about a lot of things that we had to do against a very good opposition that were very necessary to win the game We certainly missed the most important one which is defending the box because we did it poorly three times One in the first half and two in the second half and it cost us the points On the VAR decision:It wasn't because that happened today but I prefer not to comment on that.On whether the Champions League has affected our Premier League campaign:Again our preparation has been exactly the same or even more maybe a little bit of freshness and the way they have to repeat today they had to play some players that probably weren’t in the best condition to play because we don't have other players  On the frustrations not winning in the Premier League:Yeah that anger and that bad feeling that we have in the tummy make sure that we use it to have a big performance on Wednesday and be in the final. On conceding goals from set-pieces: It's not only what you score it's the difference in gap between the ones that you score and the ones that you concede That's clear and that's everybody's responsibility Somebody is able to throw the ball in the middle of the goal to a guy that is taller than anybody else but it's difficult. On concerns in possession ahead of facing PSG: Today we have given balls away that are nowhere near the standard that we require  On Jurrien Timber’s fitness ahead of Wednesday:Confident because he wasn't able to play here and we play in four days.On the issue with Timber:I cannot tell you.On Odegaard’s fitness:I haven't had a chance yet to speak to a doctor to give me an update on that League race is alive with possibility including Arsenal failing to qualify and Brentford reaching Europe after shaming Manchester United That is pertinent because of a run-in which features the visit of Aston Villa and a trip to Manchester City neither of which should hold any trepidation for a group which has already won at the Emirates Old Trafford at St James’ Park this season Bournemouth have already broken club records for points and wins in a Premier League campaign with the bars for goals scored and conceded both almost certain to be beaten Combine all that by securing their highest-ever finish of eighth and potentially The feeling persists that Iraola might not be able to replicate this success on the shakier foundations which come higher up the ladder with less time and patience but it remains an entirely tantalising prospect we must one day witness It is impressive how the Spaniard seems able to contort himself into fitting numerous different job specifications. When the Spurs links started to formalise he wisely embarked on a winless run which included exiting a cup competition to show his suitability before undoing Arsenal with set-piece mastery to plant some possible post-Arteta seeds Their previous Premier League victory over any of Arsenal Liverpool or Manchester City was so long ago that Thomas Tuchel was the manager Romelu Lukaku the opening scorer and Roman Abramovich the owner It was fair to doubt whether Enzo Maresca and his players had the minerals for this Champions League race but three wins on the bounce is a fair riposte the Italy youth international has found his stride Three Premier League starts have coincided with Brentford’s first run of three consecutive Premier League wins of the season and his stated aim of “helping them reach European competitions next season” is alive It was Kayode ugly for Manchester United but beautiful to watch a 20-year-old acclimatise so seamlessly to the league misplacing one pass and completing more than twice as many dribbles as any other player at the Gtech Brentford have muddled through without a proper right-back for long enough January and February could yet prove catastrophic to those hopes and it will require a slip or two from some of those above but Villa are in as good form as anyone and primed to capitalise if an opening presents itself If only Ollie Watkins started to turn up Kevin de Bruyne bowing out from the club with a fine impression of his former unparalleled self should not shake the foundations of what is the fair decision to allow his contract to expire This form and fitness might be sustainable and a post-Etihad career flourish could make Manchester City look foolish But it is not a gamble even the impossibly rich should overthink if there is to be any sort of emphasis on building for the future His final gift has been to hold Manchester City’s hand into the Champions League after this campaign’s substantial scare simultaneously displaying himself in the shop window for those interested in parting with a ludicrous signing-on fee and wage Bernardo Silva said that “a little bit of the soul of this team is going” with De Bruyne and it reinforces the belief that despite the Portuguese’s own personal struggles, he should be persuaded to stay for yet another year before his own deal expires in 2026 Pep Guardiola would surely prefer not to lose the two most-used players in his entire managerial career over the course of one summer with decisions to come soon enough on Ilkay Gundogan and Mateo Kovacic too The manager recently admitted his reluctance to use the club’s inexperienced academy graduates in this season’s more difficult moments was a mistake like Nico O’Reilly further embedding himself in a side anchored by that spine containing four 30-something midfield pass masters who have helped Manchester City rediscover their identity before they make necessary moves to update and improve it Almost 300 players have played 1,000 minutes in the Premier League this season and Enciso ranks first of those for shots per 90 (4.12) Those numbers are skewed only slightly by a productive first half of the season at Brighton; the Paraguayan’s shots per 90 for Ipswich sandwich him between Mo Salah and Alexander Isak as an outlier among the league’s biggest strugglers It would be no surprise to see Ipswich and McKenna learn from this season’s harsh lessons to return to this level soon; far more shocking would be if Enciso isn’t back immediately shooting from ridiculous positions and earning weirdly respectful handshakes from a beaten Jordan Pickford Newcastle had made a decent fist of that balance by simply winning 20 of their last 26 matches and losing the rest That all-or-nothing approach ended their trophy drought and made Champions League qualification a live possibility Only 11 teams in Premier League history had ever gone longer without a draw than Newcastle who finally made sure they followed their manager’s advice and didn’t lose on one of the increasingly rare occasions when victory was not possible A first draw for five months in any competition could be crucial keeping the Magpies above Chelsea and Nottingham Forest regardless of their results in this tireless race Avoiding a ruinous seasonal hat-trick of losses in the Yankuba Minteh/Dan Burn/James Milner/Chris Wood/Aaron Hughes/Tim Krul/Dan Ashworth derby was just a welcome bonus The good news is that Vitor Pereira and Wolves are on track to win the actual title by 2030 going basically full-strength to build momentum The potentially season-shattering risk of an avoidable belief-shattering defeat to an excellent side was the trade-off and while PSG themselves were beaten at the weekend by Strasbourg they made ten changes to the starting XI which conquered the Emirates and will be fresh at the Parc des Princes Arteta can only try to harness this and it might be that the “rage frustration and a bad feeling in the tummy” is actually what Arsenal need to pull them through and into the Champions League final Yet the Gunners have not looked so vulnerable in as many different areas in some time, from set-piece defending to lead-squandering The very real and very funny prospect of Arsenal failing to qualify for the Champions League while Liverpool Chelsea and one of Manchester United or Spurs all win a trophy and reach the European Promised Land is on and it starts with Nottingham Forest beating Crystal Palace on Monday night It is a perfect summary of the fine margins Silva relies on that Fulham have had 18 games decided either way by a single goal in the Premier League this season and they have won nine and lost nine of them While it guarantees safety – which is an achievement a recently promoted club should not take for granted – it also places a ceiling on what Fulham can do It inhibits them as much as it enhances them That is why Fulham’s longest winning run matches their worst losing streak of two games why they have had consecutive Premier League victories only once since November why they can beat the distant champions and by far worst team in the division in between four defeats to clubs in the Premier League’s hard-boiled centre It is also quite weird that Fulham have now ended two games this season with ten men despite not having someone sent off with an injury suffered after all their substitutes were made Not sure Emi Martinez can be blamed for that But the idea that Manchester United can actively sacrifice their Premier League season without severe censure feels doubly cowardly. It’s as if they think them giving up on it meaning anything in a material sense pre-emptively counteracts criticism or scrutiny. And when ruthless redundancies are being made, the haemorrhaging of potential prize money is an absolutely atrocious look a ludicrously expensive squad and coach should be able to hold their own and at the very least have an identifiable style Never allow Manchester United being this abysmal to be normalised It does feel as though the second wedding’s honeymoon is over that the bloom is off the rose somewhat and Everton have slipped back into their worst habits And when their worst habits were established at the start of the season as proving 2-0 to indeed be the most dangerous lead Their relative ease in sweeping into a two-goal lead over Ipswich underlined how much better than the bottom three they are but the implosion to hand Ipswich their first points from a losing position since November emphasised the work that needs to be done to steer Everton in the right direction next season Moyes has earned the opportunity to oversee these steps into a brave new era but he will know that performance and more generally the last few weeks have not really been good enough Sean Dyche was sacked for a run of two wins seven draws and four defeats; Moyes is currently on two wins seven draws and three defeats and saying “we controlled the game” after being outshot eight to 12 at home to a relegated team sounds eerily like his predecessor Four sides share the honour of having lost 29 games in a Premier League season Southampton are on 28 and have just had the league double done over them by the next-worst team © Planet Sport Limited 2025 • All Rights Reserved Please use Chrome Arsenal the first time they have claimed points at Emirates Stadium Preparations for Wednesday's second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final at Paris Saint-Germain hardly went to plan for Arsenal who suffered another disappointing home result Declan Rice opened the scoring in the 34th minute following a delicate Martin Odegaard pass but Arsenal squandered another lead in the second half, just as they did in their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last time out in the Premier League Huijsen headed home Bournemouth’s 67th-minute leveller from substitute Antoine Semenyo's long throw before Evanilson latched on to Marcus Tavernier's flick-on to poke in the winner eight minutes later The turnaround leaves second-place Arsenal just three points clear of Manchester City, while Bournemouth climb to eighth, two points above Fulham following the Cottagers’ loss at Aston Villa Evanilson headed over a glorious opportunity from Milos Kerkez's pinpoint left-wing delivery, before Leandro Trossard's stooping header was snaffled on the line by Kepa at the other end A real moment of quality brought the opener as Odegaard's cute reverse pass released Rice to round Kepa before he fired past the despairing dive of Illia Zabarnyi Bournemouth offered a positive response to that setback as Justin Kluivert's strike deflected narrowly over, before Evanilson almost lobbed David Raya after a misplaced pass from the goalkeeper on the stroke of half-time Bukayo Saka hammered just wide of the top-right corner with his right foot shortly after the break but then Bournemouth hit back when a towering Huijsen nodded Semenyo's long throw into the far corner Another set-piece proved fruitful as Alex Scott's left-wing corner found Tavernier at the near post and his flick-on allowed Evanilson to bundle home with the winning goal confirmed by a VAR check that found no conclusive evidence the striker had handled Mikel Arteta may have been expected to rotate his side with one eye on Wednesday's visit to PSG who lead 1-0 on aggregate after the first leg but the Arsenal boss selected a full-strength starting XI on Saturday Arsenal's host of first-choice stars were far from fluid in the early stages as Rice, making his 100th appearance for the club, twice fired tamely wide from chances created by the energetic Gabriel Martinelli, while Ben White's cross forced Zabarnyi to head away on the line The hosts' lack of cutting edge was again clear when Martinelli rushed a left-footed strike well wide with acres of room at the edge of Bournemouth's area just minutes before teeing up Trossard's close-range headed chance Rice displayed composure previously lacked by Arsenal to edge the hosts ahead with his eighth goal across all competitions this season – the best scoring campaign of his career Saka then passed up a couple of second-half chances before Huijsen and Evanilson delivered the hammer blows as Arsenal failed to win for a 10th Premier League match when leading With PSG to come, and Man City chasing second place before Arsenal visit champions Liverpool in eight days' time the Gunners' season is hanging in the balance after another late-season collapse Andoni Iraola may have been concerned by just one win in Bournemouth's last nine league matches before Saturday but this comeback made it five matches unbeaten and gives them a real chance of European football next season The visitors did not play like a side devoid of confidence-boosting victories knocking possession around with consummate ease before Evanilson somehow headed over from close range after Kerkez's delightful cross Dango Ouattara could also have tested Raya but William Saliba's excellent last-ditch tackle thwarted an excellent through-ball from Kluivert shortly before Rice's opener Another Saliba block saw Kluivert's dipping strike fall the wrong side of the crossbar before Ouattara picked the pocket of Odegaard from Raya's pass and teed up Evanilson to clip just over the target Yet for all of their easy-on-the-eye football two set-pieces proved the difference as diminutive winger Semenyo launched his throw on to the head of Huijsen before Evanilson outmuscled Odegaard to bundle a finish under Raya for the winner This battling win marked Bournemouth's first Premier League victory at Arsenal and Iraola will know more results like this are needed to solidify their European hopes ahead of hosting Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa next Saturday Arsenal report | Bournemouth report Mikel Arteta: "We should have killed the game and we didn't On top of that if you defend your box in two set-pieces in the way we have done you're in big nowhere near the standards that we are used to We wanted to generate the momentum and a really positive vibe today - we haven't rage and anger - make sure we use that on Wednesday." The key was the set plays in the second half I think we needed this one because we know the schedule we have you have to get points where you don't expect We missed a few chances recently and we needed it this time to go to our side." its easier to buy a proper striker so we can win it next year Elite strikers know which clubs are never going to win the elite competitions That’s probably why we miss out on so many of our transfer targets Arsenal are a club that attract talented but unsuccessful underachievers You should follow Celtic or Bayern or PSG if winning is all that matters I can agree there are criticisms to be made But I cannot stand this winning is all that matters take Odegaards and Trossards form is nothing short of horrendous for the last 5-6 games Trossards scored 3 times on the past 6 games Could well of scored against PSG if it wasn’t for their beast of a keeper It’s not his fault that there is no alternative to bring on or play ahead of him Trossard is inconsistent but is certainly NOT the problem Trossard isn’t the problem but he is ineffective up top as we rely on a target man to hold ball and without that we hardly win the second balls and knock ons from raya s goal kicks and passing … That’s why Merino was a great rotation option Trossard is not going to win many aerial duals but he’s really a left winger with the commensurate type of skill set but the tactic of a long ball to a dwarf against a giant is but his hold up play and build up play is not good Either Arteta or the ownership don’t understand how to build an attacking squad with goal scoring instincts Other then early 2024 under Arteta’s reign scoring goals have been painful to watch with endless short inticate passing that doesn’t seem to work anymore I love Mikel but he might have taken us as far as he can after all this is his first manager job Kinda like Xavi’s time in Barca… The club have let the players down in regards to recruitment for too many transfer windows We have been really unlucky with injuries to an extent but the club were negligent going into this season relying on Jesus and Havertz up top Jesus has proven he can’t stay fit and Havertz enjoyed an epic second half of last season the club went into the season presuming Saka could continue to… Read more » Another game I question why I bother going Just letting the league season go to shit is a slap in the face of fans going week in week out 2nd half we were abject but Arteta played what is probably very close to his strongest team against Bournemouth so you cannot accuse him of ‘letting the league season go to shit’ I know it’s only football and hate is a strong word By delaying passes and standing on the ball set the whole tone of players in front This is a horrible take but everyone’s allowed to have its opinion Raya has been increasingly erratic last few weeks I sense that when he dithers (like in this match) it also affects Saliba Way too many potentially fatal brain-farts from Big Willy in recent games Losing the ball because you are too scared to shoot (Ode) or losing the ball because you are spinning about doing nothing (Trossard) causing constant breaks is the main culprit vice one player Oh and wrestling a guy not knowing where the ball is from a cross is about the funniest thing i have seen Its not just Odegaard who does that and I have no idea how its tolerated but is there a question as to why he’s the one on their centre-forward i saw that mentioned in the blog today and is a valid point it seems they only take a shot when the success is guaranteed… Odegaard has forgotten how to take a shot he hesitates fiddles around and increasingly loses possession He has been doing this a lot trying to be the playmaker and inviting the press I will get down voted but no conclusive evidence for VAR to overturn that decision Stop blaming the officials and ask why a player is subbed on just before a corner (first rule of coaching surely) and why we have now not won 10 games where we have been leading At least six of those due to horrible refereeing decisions if it wasn’t for incompetent officials we wouldn’t have to sign anyone in the transfer windows Troodat – the result being leaving our shortest player to mark their CF from a corner Another pathetic home display against a team we should easily dispatch Hard to tell how much the performances of late have been players not playing with the same level of intensity to save themselves for the CL matches knowing that we had lost the league a long time ago or just the ongoing issues we’ve had all season of no depth in the attack and no ability to mix things up with our attacking tactics In league matches we don’t seem anything like the team of last year or even the team that has shown up in the champions league.… Read more » He took the gamble of playing a strong team today to try and secure CL football Unfortunately they were dreadful in the second half and the gamble failed and the supreme confidence which followed going 2-0 up Arteta must take blame for allowing us to play this way Does the Trossard speciality ‘dummy’ pass get on anyone else’s nerves Chances to win the Champions League don’t happen very often but Arsenal really needed to prioritize the league games and go full tilt to make sure we qualify again next season The lack lustre performances in the last few matches could mean we miss out on CL football next season which would be the bigger disaster than losing on Wednesday night I said at the end of January we’d be lucky to hold onto second and fuck me I think the BIGGEST mistake arteta made was taking the comedy cup seriously – we could have done without those demoralising games against Newcastle and we might have bagged a few more points and this conversation would thus be an irrelevance it’s lost a lot of it’s cachet in recent years but it’s still a major domestic honour worth winning.(at least that’s what Spurs fan tell me….) We may not be able to hold onto second place with the downward spiral that is going on but to say that we will drop out of the top 5 is hyperbole and very unlikely Even if we budget 1 point out of 6 against Liverpool and newcastle and all 3 points against Southampton so that is a game we can’t rely on anything Haven’t we lost 3 times already to Newcastle and all it would take is a red card against Southampton and we are cooked Not an exaggeration but entirely possible with the form we are in This is real and it’s happening now peeps… It feels like that now but the frame of mind changes after every game Not expecting anything against Liverpool but the fact that you don’t even expect a point against Southampton is the definition of hyperbole Let’s see who’s right at the end of the season Not saying I don’t expect a point against Southampton especially with our record with red cards this season If Palace can beat Forest tonight it will help massively he probably needs to win something next season Let’s hope that we got that poor performance out of our system before Wednesday Let’s focus and regroup for the big one he’s at fault for the first goal could of come got it decided not too went in backfoot which left him looking very small when diving for the ball probably could do better for the 2nd goal aswell but that may be a view based on me thinking he had a shocker his passing short nearly led to twice being lobbed yet again this is what happens with no goalkeeping competition if only Ramsdale was available to come off the bench for a tactical switch (Still not sure if that idea should be classified as gaslighting or bullshitting.) The defence has needed a Lehman bollocking and instead it gets the nice-boy Raya smile We didn’t buy anyone in Jan and now we’re paying the price This team is stretched to the limits and we’re seeing that now in our performances We don’t even have the ability to rest players ahead of a champions league semi-final decider Can’t score goals and dropping points from winning positions Martinelli and Trossard aren’t clinical enough But at least Martinelli makes up for that with his defense… Read more » Martinelli set up two excellent chances for Rice But we need a winger who can score 10 to 15 goals a season in the prem to compliment Saka as we don’t have a goal machine to top Certainly a very talented player but I’m starting to come to the realisation he’s becoming the latest in a very long line of Arsenal attackers who just never had a consistent end product: Walcott Ask yourself this… would Biereth not have snaffled at least one of those chances I think the board phoned it in when we didn’t get reinforcements in January No team looking to win things doesn’t double down when trophies are on offer At that time we were still in at least 3 competitions Sadly I think this excellent generation will also be a “nearly” one for Arsenal Europe’s record-breaking top-scorer for 10m ? He was available and had stated on record that he wanted to come back to us Colossal fuck-up by Edu (to sell him) and Mik (not to grab him back in Jan) Both manager and the majority of players are arrogant fucks Arteta has a lot to answer for with the team he has built and signing players that are not required Thinking you’ve won when only 1 up is pure arrogance Ozil would have got a 4 and a ‘Well done on completing one pass for the goal you soft cunt’ and rightyl so When he fell over on the edge of their penalty area I was calling to put him out of his misery then he facilitates the second goal with defending that might have been a penalty if the goal did not stand I truly believed that this season could mostly be explained by series of unfortunate events: dodgy referring I am starting to wonder if there is something more fundamental lacking in this team (all of the above not withstanding) This is yet another game that we should have won (and definitely should not have lost) and makes me worry that the manager is no longer able to get all he should from this group I don’t see hope on Wednesday at Paris No mercy for those cheese eating surrender monkeys… France is 3rd in per capita cheese consumption I have no idea how you give him that score His assist wasn’t some mesmerizing defense splitting pass He was mostly passing backwards and looked terrified to take any risks His facial expressions tell it all – he is not having fun and is scared to take any chances He won’t tame a shot when he has the chance to do so and rather pass the ball back (!) but he takes a free kick like there’s nobody else to do it Arteta still plays him instead of giving one of the youngsters a chance there – and all we come up with are mediocre to poor performances these past couple of weeks PSG will eat us alive if we play… Read more » I don’t think stripping him of the captain’s armband or dropping him entirely will solve Odegaard’s lapse in form He strikes me as the sort of player the manager has to put an arm round rather aim a kick up the rear etc Arteta needs to ration Martin’s playing time by giving Nwaneri at least 30 to 45 minutes from the bench if the Norwegian’s form continues without improvement Not yet mate…despite today’s shit show we are still in with a good shout of dumping PSG on Wednesday So do I but that might be the Cabernet Sauvignon talkin… Yep – that damn Cabernet Talking-on (and on… and on…) Can’t take these ratings seriously today when Odegaard gets over 6 after a horror show outside of the assist The willingness to slag off on Partey when our captain puts on performances like this week after week is beyond me Trossard and White stole a living today though White is just getting back following injury so we could go easier on him Awaiting a comprehensive statistical review on Odegaard’s performances at season’s end because he owes the club wages for the year he’s had It’s his worst season so far but he’s obviously not right physically Blame it on the shit show of the summer and January transfer windows and the incredibly bad squad depth that we have to keep flogging him week in week out A full rest over the summer then we’ll see if he can regain his form I’d definitely make Rice captain next year though Arsenal let me down and so did Luton Town… Liverpool have won and they shouldn’t have done and so I lost me half a crown… 😢 I’ve just tried to lessen the pain a little White in particular was getting run past repeatedly the organization failed to add the quality attacking player we desperately need Bournemouth could have had a couple more goals But the negativity of so many comments is really annoying Nwaneri and MLS are only going to get better We’ll add an attacker and with any luck will only have Tomiyasu on the training table in August “Who would you trade teams with?” Sorry bro but I can’t categorically say that arsenal will NOT beat PSG on Wednesday – I suspect of the four remaining games we’ll only beat Southampton and lose the rest!! Its called being a realist and seeing arsenal do this TIME AND AGAIN!! The realists were saying that we couldn’t beat Real Madrid but we did I know our form has been poor for a while I just don’t see why supporters are directing so much anger and criticism at a very good team and manager It really feels like we’re just going through the motions in the league now I get that everyone’s focus is on the Champions League but we have no momentum to carry into the PSG game We don’t look scary and we’ve given them ideas of weaknesses to exploit We have Liverpool and Newcastle next and if we’re not careful we may find we lose 2nd place in the league Liverpool will be playing with complete freedom as the champions and Newcastle… well… they seem to always play us at the most annoying time They’ve damaged our… Read more » …At least we can get another expensive goalkeeper at the end of the season to add to the left backs we will need when Tierney and zinchenko go and with likely Califiore injured again by then now the last 3 games might be more meaningful to watch. Read our privacy notice Arsenal made it just two League wins from six as they fell at home to Bournemouth on Saturday For Bournemouth, the result will fan the flames of their quest for Champions League qualification after a run of poor results saw them drop in the table but the result will be more damaging for the Gunners who were in the market for a confidence booster ahead of their trip to Paris in midweek Rice’s opener came after a dismal start to the match where he had found himself in some good positions but struggled to make anything of them He squandered two shooting chances in the early stages later falling into the advertising hoardings as he made a weak attempt at a cross latching onto Martin Odegaard’s through ball taking it round Arrizabalaga and scoring into an empty net It would be the only difference between the two sides in the first half but that is not to say Bournemouth did not have their chances Evanilson missed a pair of chances to equalise in quick succession towards the end of the half heading over from a Milos Kerkez cross and squandering a counter as he attempted to chip Raya from range Kepa made a crucial intervention to keep Trossard’s header out getting down quickly to stop it on the line The second half could almost be described as end-to-end but neither team managed to create much tangible threat But it would be Arsenal ruing their misses Anthoine Semenyo heaved a long throw into the box for Dean Huijsen to head a deserved equaliser home Evanilson would put the Cherries ahead as he wrestled with Odegaard the ball looking to deflect in off his elbow but VAR said after a lengthy check that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the decision After VAR controversy saw Saliba dismissed in the return fixture debate will again rage Stacey Solomon 'regrets reality show with Joe Swash' for tough reason If Arsenal hoped to take some momentum into the defining week of their season the first time they had ever been beaten at home by the south-coast club means they go into Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg at Paris Saint-Germain with much to ponder — and plenty to improve Mikel Arteta’s side trail from the first leg by a single goal and will need a significantly improved performance in France if they are to reach just their second final in the competition we dissect the main talking points from today’s game Arsenal’s threat at attacking set pieces is often celebrated but this season there has been a worrying vulnerability with defensive dead-balls Arteta’s team conceded from a long throw and a corner against Bournemouth Those were the 11th and 12th occasions Arsenal have conceded from a set piece in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign all in the bottom eight of the table — have a worse record this season excluding penalties As Arsenal’s Premier League campaign has petered out some uncharacteristically sloppy errors have crept into their game there were a couple of unusually shaky moments for goalkeeper David Raya whose passing seems to have become a little more erratic of late and know that any defensive mistake could leave the tie beyond them PSG arguably carry more threat in open play than at dead balls but their analysts will doubtless be paying close attention to Arsenal’s emerging issue Declan Rice marked his 100th game for Arsenal with a goal he popped up in the centre-forward position running in behind the Bournemouth defence to take the ball round the goalkeeper and finish Rice now has 34 goal contributions in 100 Arsenal games (15 goals It’s a far better tally than Arsenal could reasonably have hoped for when they paid £105million to make Rice their record signing in the summer of 2023 But Rice has evolved into a different player While he was bought with a view to fielding him as a No 6 this game saw the England international return to the No 8 role that has become his primary position The goal demonstrated why: his running power from midfield is difficult to contend with With Thomas Partey now available again following his Champions League suspension Rice is set to continue in his box-to-box role against PSG on Wednesday Having been a difference maker in the two-legged tie against Real Madrid Arsenal will be hoping he can deliver again in Paris This match provided Arsenal fans with an opportunity to have a closer look at 20-year-old centre-half Dean Huijsen They certainly will have noticed him: Bournemouth’s centre-half climbed highest in a crowded penalty area to head home their 67th-minute equaliser Arsenal are among the suitors courting Huijsen ahead of the summer transfer window and regard him as a potential replacement should Jakub Kiwior leave the club this summer There’s a debate to be had there, though. After finally getting a run in his preferred position as a left-sided centre-back, Kiwior looks a much more accomplished Premier League performer Huijsen’s release clause is set at £50million ($66.4m) — with other needs in the squad would swapping Kiwior for the Spanish international represent a worthwhile upgrade Much may depend on whether there is a market for Kiwior — and what the Pole wants to do at this point in his career and as long as William Saliba and Gabriel are at Arsenal Arsenal’s manager wants his players to use the “rage” they were experiencing after this defeat as fuel for their date with PSG “We started the game and a lot of the things we wanted happened,” he told the BBC “We should have killed the game and we didn’t On top of that if you defend your box in two set-pieces in the way we have done you’re in big “We wanted to generate the momentum and a really positive vibe today rage and anger — make sure we use that on Wednesday.” (Top photo: Declan Rice; Robin Jones – AFC Bournemouth/AFC Bournemouth via Getty Images) James McNicholas has covered Arsenal extensively for more than a decade. 'Ironically the ref gets this right' Hojlund's late effort was a bitter pill for Bournemouth manager Iraola to swallow particularly as neither he nor his coaches believed Evanilson's red card was deserved The loss of a vital two points and the suspension that will rule the Brazilian out until the final game of the season against Leicester - by which time the Cherries might well know their fate - could prevent the campaign delivering the first European place it seemed for so long it would It will be little consolation to Iraola and his players to reflect - it is so easy to forget it is only 15 years since Bournemouth were promoted out of the fourth tier of English football as Doncaster and Port Vale have been this weekend Development on the pitch since then has been clear But now owner Bill Foley has big plans off it as well with an expansion of the Vitality Stadium to take the capacity up to 20,000 planned within the next couple of years Even that would be just over a quarter of the size of Old Trafford The Cherries matchday income in their recently published accounts to 30 June 2024 was £6.53m compared to United's £137.13m over the same period Bournemouth have put their spending to better use Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez excelled as usual and Alex Scott kept them ticking over in midfield they were equally effective at either end of the pitch Kepa's stunning reaction save to deny Alejandro Garnacho an equaliser after the Argentina international had raced clear on to Bruno Fernandes' cross-field pass was sensational But so too was the clinical nature of Semenyo's finish as the visitors failed to clear after Patrick Dorgu had initially been ambushed close to the touchline when United tried to play out from the back and the ball was whipped into the penalty area It wasn't quite plain sailing for Bournemouth after that but with a historic first European campaign at stake they seemed to have the grit and determination to keep United out even when they were left a man down Red card decision is 'frustrating' - Iraola The resilience Amorim's side showed to keep going and claim their point will offer some solace before such a big fortnight for the United head coach Hojlund has now scored two in eight games which should at least provide some confidence before the Bilbao games when goals Teenager Chido Obi is still to score and though he was denied late on by Kepa it is asking too much for a 17-year-old to lead an attack at his level meaning Hojlund has a massive role to play it was another of those occasions when Amorim's team looked less than the sum of their parts there was some intricate play through midfield and while it did not lead to a major threat on the home goal United gave up a goal to their opponents far too easily with Shaw - who completed the full 90 minutes on his first start of the campaign - giving a short pass to Dorgu rather than electing to open the game out either in front of him or to the right It is that kind of basic decision-making under pressure that continues to undermine Amorim's tactical revolution - and cannot happen again in Spain this week when it really counts Man Utd deserved late draw at Bournemouth - Amorim Premier League: Bournemouth under way against struggling Man Utd After the opportunity to rate players has closed the score displayed represents the average from all the submissions by BBC Sport users The BBC is not responsible for any changes that may be made Red Card at 70 minutesSubstituteshome team Red Card at 70 minutesSubstitutesNumber 22 Ugarte Match OfficialsReferee: Peter BankesVideo Assistant Referee: John BrooksAssistant Referee 1: Edward SmartAssistant Referee 2: Nick GreenhalghFourth Official: Tim RobinsonAssistant VAR Official: Natalie AspinallMatch StatsKey you need to enable JavaScript in your browser 2:30:00Head to HeadSeason so farPremier League Scroll LeftScroll RightBournemouth are unbeaten in their last three Premier League games against Man Utd (W2 D1) picking up as many points in these games (7) as they had in their first 12 against the Red Devils (W2 D1 L9) Manchester United have conceded eight goals in their last three Premier League games against Bournemouth as many as they had in their previous 11 against the Cherries Bournemouth could be the sixth different side to complete the league double over Manchester United this season the most in a single campaign since 1933-34 (6) and most in a top-flight campaign since 1930-31 (9) Bournemouth have earned 49 points in the Premier League this season their highest ever tally in a campaign in the competition They could become the 40th different side to achieve a 50+ point Premier League season with the last side to reach that tally for the first time being Brentford in 2022-23 (59) Bournemouth are looking to record three consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time since November 2019 with the third game back then being a 1-0 home win against Manchester United Manchester United have failed to score in 13 different Premier League games this season with only Leicester (15) and Everton (14) doing so more They last failed to score in more league games in a single campaign in 1989-90 (16) Manchester United have lost 15 league games this season their most in a single Premier League campaign They last lost more in a league season in 1989-90 (16) Only Wolves (12) have conceded more goals from corners in the Premier League this season than Manchester United (11) while the Red Devils’ 24% of goals conceded coming from corners the highest of any side this term No player has had more shots in the Premier League this season than Antoine Semenyo (116 it’s the most shots a Bournemouth player has ever had in a single top-flight campaign Only Cole Palmer (78) has created more chances in the Premier League this season than Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes (77) only reaching double figures in 2020-21 (12) Manchester United rallied to grab a point through Rasmus Højlund and dent their 10-man hosts’ European hopes Ha. It’s certainly striking what has happened when Amorim has ditched the dogma. In the frantic final acts when he has switched to a back four, United now have two mini-wins and a mini-draw: it was 0-0 at Forest, 2-0 v Lyon and 1-0 here. Kluivert on Bournemouth's 'special' season 137 CommentsJustin Kluivert says he feels at home at Bournemouth after a career that has taken him through the Netherlands But while the Dutch forward is enjoying laying down some roots after jet-setting around the continent - he would jump at the chance of exploring Europe with the Cherries next season As many as 10 Premier League clubs could qualify for European competitions, external in 2025-26 And with Andoni Iraola's side sitting 10th - one point behind eighth-placed Fulham - Bournemouth remain in the hunt with four games to go has played - and scored - in the top-flight of each of the six countries he has played in "I need to be in the book of Guinness World Records," the son of Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert tells Football Focus in an interview to be shown on BBC One on Saturday from 12:00 BST "I think I am the first player to score in the top six competitions – if Holland is the sixth." Romanian striker Florin Raducioiu and Montenegro's Stevan Jovetic are the only other players to score in the top five leagues of Italy The forward joined Bournemouth from Roma in a £9.6m deal in June 2023 Since then the Cherries have set a club record Premier League points tally in back-to-back seasons, are challenging for a place in Europe, and have just opened a state-of-the-art £32m training facility, where this interview is taking place "We speak every day about it," Kluivert says about Bournemouth's target of playing in Europe for the first time "We believe in it and we will go for it 100%." Kluivert emerging from dad's shadow as Bournemouth 'dream' of Europe 'Easy as that' - Kluivert's 'beautiful' history-making penalty hat-trick Justin Kluivert has scored 19 times and provided seven assists in 62 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth Kluivert has been a big part of Iraola's plans this season making 30 Premier League appearances while accumulating 2,114 minutes of playing time He has 12 Premier League goals - including two hat-tricks - and six assists as he looks to finally step out of his famous father's shadow "I always saw it as a motivation," he says about making a name for himself after his dad's glittering career which included winning the Champions League with Ajax in 1994-95 three Dutch League titles with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven as well as winning La Liga with Barcelona in 1998-99 "It gave me hunger to show why am I good and not just because I had the name Kluivert on my shirt "People were always wondering 'is he actually good or is he just there because of his dad?' "Pressure makes diamonds and that is how you shine." In November, Kluivert made history when he scored three penalties in the same match during Bournemouth's 4-2 win at Wolves - the first time that has happened in the Premier League era He followed that up two months later with another hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Newcastle, one of his dad's former clubs I never liked taking penalties because I was stressed about everything," he says I feel I have the calmness to keep it going." Kluivert has played - and scored - in the top-flight in the Netherlands Between 2018 and 2023 Kluivert changed countries five times in as many years "I have always been travelling and been on loan," he adds "I wouldn't recommend that to anyone Although he was officially a Roma player between 2018-2023 Kluivert spent most of that time outside Italy He scored for RB Leipzig against Manchester United during a Champions League match while on loan with the German club in 2020-21 before moving to France to play a season on loan with Nice Then it was off to Spain and a temporary move to Valencia for the 2022-23 La Liga campaign Kluivert scored a penalty against Rayo Vallecano Two months later Bournemouth appointed Iraola, who made Kluivert his first signing at the Vitality Stadium. "I knew back then he was a great coach because his Rayo Vallecano team were like we play now with lots of energy," says Kluivert he will be here two hours early to mark the pitch out "Me and the manager are the perfect match but he saw I could play as an attacking midfielder Kluivert is keen to lay down some roots in England He recently became a father for the first time I can't describe it in words," he says "Having my wife and baby gives me calmness." Kluivert has scored two Premier League hat-tricks for Bournemouth this season Bournemouth's rise from football's abyss to the Premier League is well documented Manchester United and Tottenham amongst others talked in December 2023 about the Cherries qualifying for Europe within five years Yet his club could meet that target this month if they finish the season strongly Their final four games are against Arsenal (away) Manchester City (away) and Leicester City (home) That is why I came here," adds Kluivert The future for Bournemouth is very good and I am very excited to be part of it "We can for sure achieve Europe this season "I am going to keep working hard and give it my best always." manager was asked for the latest team news Here's what he had to say on the following subjects on the fitness of Calafiori and Jorginho:Yeah Jorginho’s got a bit more complicated than expected. Thankfully I think I'll leave it to the doctor if he wants to clarify or judge that.  on if Jorgi could play in the rest of the season:I think so if everything goes well in the next week or so I think he will gradually integrate in the team on if Havertz could be back before the end of the season:I think so I think if everything goes the way it's going at the moment and the way it's planned I think he will have a chance to play a few games here in the season.  on if Partey will be involved tomorrow after he was suspended in the week:Well I have the opportunity to play him tomorrow on if he should be involved ahead of Wednesday’s big game:Yeah set Sunday up with the players that we have available and do the line-up and the possible subs.  on Rice’s 100th appearance for us next time he plays and what that says about him:Consistency I think it's been an unbelievable signing.  on the supercomputer giving us a favourable chance of finishing in the top five:You love the supercomputer We have to have the right to win the game tomorrow be better than Bournemouth and win the game That's what we have to do and that's the way we have prepared since two days ago.  on if we’re looking at mathematically qualifying for the top five:It's a lot of ifs The most important one is to increase our probabilities to win our game and that's the focus of the team on what we’ve achieved this season with so many players unavailable throughout:The thing is that we live every day with what we have I was very shocked just before the game against PSG at home because I was walking into the dressing room and suddenly I saw all of them together sitting And then I felt joy about the team and what they are doing and how they're trying and nobody's talking about it in the building at all But it's happening and I felt pride about how the boys and the staff and the club are reacting to these situations on how to stop our players thinking about Paris this weekend:I will discuss that Because the only thing we can control is our performances our emotional state and how well we are performing a lot of the things that we have to do in the Premier League even though we haven't achieved what we wanted I take the opportunity as well to congratulate Liverpool and what they've done in the manner that they've done they had consistently their squad available now we're going to have to finish the season very strong on finishing second being our target now:Yes for sure on how impressed he’s been by Liverpool this season:It's good they had no distraction. The good thing is they had them on the pitch all the time Nobody should be surprised because they have the level and they made it because they've done a lot of things very on what type of teammate Andoni Iraola was when they played together at Antiguoko:He was super talented probably none of us thought we were going to be in the position we are in today in the Premier League. But really happy for him I think he has changed a lot of things at the club as well on if Bournemouth can challenge us for Champions League football in seasons to come:I imagine I think in the Premier League every club that is in this position Now they have the consistency in the league When you look at the players and the set-up that they have on if not winning the league has hurt:Big time  I understand that (Liverpool) is a team that is being more consistent and they have a lot of ingredients that you need to win it on how to have fewer injuries next season:That's another discussion we have We have so much to play for still in the two competitions Then at the end of the season we have many weeks to reflect and do the work that we are already preparing to give you much better answers on if working out how to keep more players fit is one of the key things:Two main things have availability of your best players in the best position and win your games look at the history over the last 100 years on if this game could’ve been rescheduled to give us more time to prepare for PSG:Well I think in this context we have discussed that many We were a bit lucky because this last weekend we didn't have a game so I think we cannot argue in this case and at least we have four days so it will be very well prepared on if he watched Liverpool celebrate winning the league:A small part of it.  on if he can get motivation from watching rivals celebrating the title:No at the end they are your colleagues as well and I know some of the people on the staff as well and I know how much work everybody puts in in a way that has given no chance to the others and you have to congratulate that It's sport as well and you have to accept the reasons why you haven't been able to achieve it and try to improve my motivations are much more focused in other aspects than that one but it hurts to watch it on William Saliba links and his future:Those kind of things are more for Andrea and the club to talk about that he wants to continue with us and what will happen in the future with our negotiations and things that have to take time and process and be on top of them but I'm quite confident that William is very happy here and that's the place that he wants to be on Martin Odegaard campaign so far:There were many factors I think the long-term injury doesn't help to give you the consistency and the platform to continue in the season but it's very difficult The level of consistency shown is unbelievable for an attacking player to be constantly there very rare because there are always ups and downs especially the players that are very creative and they rely on a spark and creating moments in-game but there are other aspects of his games that remain intact and he continues to do every week on squad depth in the attacking-midfield position:We have a lot of options there We have players that can play in that position we have Max [Dowman] coming up as well very soon as well so I think we are good in the position on the achievement of potentially finishing second with the injury list this season:I don't know I don't have a very clear opinion because I see what having those issues the impact of that because you just think it's the impact of what happens on the pitch on the day and they are much bigger than that The numbers that we have trained with this season I've never experienced before in my life but there's a lot of learnings to take and a lot to take to the team to the club as well to learn and a lot of things especially that are going to make us much better on whether he’s seen a difference in Jakub Kiwior’s confidence around the training ground:He's so likeable everybody really loves him in that dressing room He had a language barrier at the beginning when he joined us now he's much more open with the boys and he gets on really well with everybody so I'm very happy with him on whether Max Dowman is part of his plans for next season:For the near future yeah, let's see how this evolves but we certainly have a big talent there on how Bournemouth’s high pressing style is similar to PSG’s:In terms of intensity and how they approach every duel in the way of playing they are a bit different They want to achieve things that are very similar to PSG in certain ways so it's not to practice about them it's just to be very efficient and very good in what we have to do against them in order to play the way that we want Jorginho and Havertz:I wouldn't rule all of them out let's see in the next few days how a few of them react Guardiola's side will face Nottingham Read moreWhile some of Palace’s players looked as if their minds were on next Saturday’s trip to Wembley Andoni Iraola was frustrated his team could not take advantage as they failed to win for an 11th successive time in London since their triumph here in December 2023 “Considering how the game has gone we cannot be happy with a point. It was a game that we should have won,” said the Bournemouth manager, whose side have nonetheless surpassed the club’s record points tally in the Premier League with five matches still to play Arsenal and Aston Villa in their next three “I hope that we can be in this fight until the last game.” “What we need is consistency. It’s either two red cards or no red cards,” said Glasner. “This was the feeling everyone had at half-time. It’s really difficult to deal with this situation so I’m pleased with how they responded. We could have collapsed, but we didn’t and now the confidence is coming back.” Disaster struck for Palace on the stroke of half-time when Richards, who had been cautioned for a foul on Dango Ouattara, was dismissed for pulling back Kluivert. The referee left the pitch to a chorus of boos at half-time and there were more when the fortunate Scott was replaced by Lewis Cook for the second half. Glasner sacrificed Eze to bring on Jefferson Lerma against his former club and an already bad-tempered game threatened to spill over as another three players were cautioned within five minutes of the restart. Evanilson’s header from an Adam Smith cross that looped just wide of Dean Henderson’s goal was the closest Bournemouth came to scoring. This is the archive of The Observer up until 21/04/2025. before their crucial Champions League tie with Paris St-Germain in midweek were hit as Bournemouth came from behind to win at Emirates Stadium and boost their own European ambitions The Gunners head to France on Wednesday looking to overturn a 1-0 loss in the first leg and reach the final of Europe's premier club competition Mikel Arteta resisted the opportunity to rest his key players for the game but despite naming a strong Arsenal side against the Cherries they were undone by a second-half fightback by the visitors Declan Rice had marked his 100th appearance for the Gunners with the opener in the first half rounding Kepa in the Bournemouth goal before firing in But the visitors were always in the game and after missing some decent chances in the first half they turned the game on its head after the break Dean Huijsen equalised in the 67th minute when he headed in from Antoine Semenyo's long throw The visitors then took the lead eight minutes later as Evanilson bundled in from a corner to seal a first-ever win at the Emirates for Bournemouth Arsenal remain second despite the loss but third-placed Manchester City are just three points behind the win for Bournemouth boosted their hopes of securing European football next season as they move up to eighth How Bournemouth turned the tables on set-piece specialists Arsenal Iraola pleased with Bournemouth set-piece success in Arsenal victory This is a result that will live long in the memory of Bournemouth fans and one that keeps alive their hopes of playing European football next season Bournemouth have been in the equation for much of the season but a run of just one win in their nine games prior to the trip to Emirates Stadium suggested their challenge was falling away But this win will give them much-needed confidence sparked by Andoni Iraola's smart use of substitutes as Semenyo's introduction turned the game in the visitors' favour Up next for Bournemouth are tricky fixtures against Aston Villa and Manchester City but they will have the belief they can go on to get the results they need to finish inside the top eight What did you make of Bournemouth’s display Europe is very much the focus for Arsenal as they look to win the Champions League for the first time But they face a difficult task after losing the first leg of their semi-final to PSG last week meaning they will have to produce one of their biggest performances in recent years at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday But this was far from ideal preparation for that as despite Arteta opting to play all his key players the Gunners were not at their best and they dropped points for the second successive Premier League game Arsenal had been in control in the first half but when Rice gave them the lead 11 minutes before the break the home fans would have hoped their side would kick on to add further goals But that failed to happen and instead momentum swung Bournemouth's way in the second half The Gunners are usually strong at both scoring from and defending set-pieces but they were poor on both fronts on Saturday as they conceded twice from such instances for the first time since December 2023 They didn't defend either goals well enough as Huijsen was first to the long throw for the opener while Evanilson got the better of Martin Odegaard for the winner There was still time for Arsenal to rescue something from the game but the lack of a striker with killer instinct showed as they didn't attempt a shot on goal after Bournemouth's double substituted for Mikel Merino at 74 minutesNumber 5 Soler Match with only three points separating the teams Video Assistant Referee causes controversy every week in the Premier League After each weekend we take a look at the major incidents to examine and explain the process both in terms of VAR protocol and the Laws of the Game What happened: Evanilson put Bournemouth up 21 up in the 75th minute when he bundled the ball home after Marcus Tavernier had helped on a corner delivery to the far post a possible handball by the goal scorer was checked by the VAR VAR review: One thing tends to determine this kind of situation: luck luck of who is in the video assistant chair whether they feel they have the definitive proof there was agreement among pundits that there wasn't categorical evidence to disallow the goal; that you couldn't be absolutely certain the ball had touched Evanilson's arm that it might have gone into the net off his side The balance of probabilities is that the ball came off Evanilson's thigh Yet the VAR isn't supposed to make interventions on probabilities or was it the striker's hip or side? BBCWe see these "factual" judgements on a regular basis ones which are actually subjective and based on the opinion of an individual VAR They're not truly "factual," like offside position because it's possible for a VAR to come to different conclusions based upon what they believe they have seen and many will feel a failure to disallow the Evanilson goal shows inconsistency -- with both calls going against them in the VAR room Kai Havertz had a goal disallowed for handball against Aston Villa through a VAR intervention. BBCVerdict: During the live coverage it was difficult to be sure if there was a touch on the arm Certainly the pixelated zoom on one angle couldn't be relied upon later analysis using the camera behind the goal to the side did suggest there was the evidence of a touch of the arm -- the question is how long should the VAR spend on this before deciding to leave the decision on the field he's likely to come to the conclusion that he cannot be certain It's understandable why the VAR didn't get involved Maybe not for VAR in the immediate time frame They would argue that's been the tale of their season It's worth noting that even if the VAR had decided there was a handball, there was a very strong case for a penalty for holding. Martin Ødegaard had turned his back and had no interest in challenging for the ball only preventing the attacker from getting to it The ball touching the arm of Evanilson would only be an offense leading to a goal so the referee could have been sent to the screen to give a spot kick for Ødegaard's actions It would also have been a red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity Rayan Aït-Nouri makes contact with Bernardo Silva on the shin with his studs and straight leg. BBCVAR review: Aït-Nouri avoided a VAR red card as the VAR determined that the contact with Silva was accidental -- this means it was part of a regular footballing action -- and lacked force When Aït-Nouri tries to spin past the challenge of Silva, he appears to straighten his left leg -- is that to make contact with the Manchester City player then it has to be a red card for endangering the safety of an opponent by challenging in a way which could potentially cause injury Accidental contact on its own wouldn't admonish Aït-Nouri if force was involved He did slow down after initially running with the ball and contact was with the front of the studs rather than the full flush of the boot But there did appear to be a buckle of Silva's leg something the VAR looks for when judging serious foul play Verdict: It has not been a great season for Premier League referees and serious foul play That includes the VAR intervention for the dismissal of Bournemouth's Evanilson There have been red cards missed, too. Last month, Tierney was on VAR and failed to recommend that Everton's James Tarkowski be sent off in the Merseyside derby The way Aït-Nouri changed his body position and stretched out his leg doesn't look good and a red card would have been a better outcome at normal speed it's quite difficult to see the exact nature of the challenge The VAR can't tell the referee that Aït-Nouri should have been booked But there appears to be enough disagreement about this tackle that it won't go down as a missed red card but if he had been sent off through a VAR review there'd have been few grumbles Mats Wieffer should have received a second yellow card after catching Sandro Tonali in the ankle area. BBCVAR review: Wieffer got a touch on the ball but caught Tonali on the ankle as his foot came down though there wasn't enough force for this to be serious foul play However, the nature of Wieffer's challenge was reckless and he should have been booked. This problem for Pawson was that he'd already cautioned the Brighton & Hove Albion player in the 32nd minute for delaying the restart so this should have led to a red card for two bookable offenses Verdict: VAR can't get involved in second yellow cards so Wieffer was very fortunate that the referee chose to give him one more chance Not that he got the opportunity to make the most of it because manager Fabian Hürzeler substituted him two minutes later as a precaution Tariq Lamptey's foul on Anthony Gordon was just outside the area. BBCVAR review: For a tackle the position of the offense is judged by the initial contact which causes the foul If the two players continue to be in general contact into the area you will see the VAR trying to find a freeze frame for that contact point to judge if it happened inside the area or just outside Verdict: The foul contact by Lamptey was clearly just outside the box Joe Willock was booked after going to ground before any contact from Jan Paul van Hecke. BBCVAR review: Van Hecke stopped his challenge before reaching Willock; the Newcastle player anticipated contact that didn't arrive Willock seemed to realize this was the case and moved his right leg slightly toward Van Hecke when he was already going down Verdict: For only the second time in six seasons of VAR in the Premier League an attacker was booked for simulation after a penalty was overturned -- there's no doubt there should have been a few more cautions Before this weekend, the one and only booking was given by referee Michael Oliver for Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi after a spot kick was canceled against Burnley in October 2019 -- the very first season of VAR VAR decision: Penalty, scored by Alexander Isak who had already raised it before the free kick was taken. BBCVAR review: A slightly strange situation where there were two potential handballs with the referee giving the spot kick against Estupiñán -- which was perhaps the least obvious From Schär's shot, Brighton's Yasin Ayari appeared to deliberately bring his arm down to the ball The Sweden international maybe got a small touch on it and it then went through and came off Estupiñán's elbow Pawson then blew his whistle before Callum Wilson's header was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen; the referee probably should have held back for a second in case a goal was immediately scored Verdict: The decision to give a penalty against Estupiñán was supported by the VAR but while his arm was up the ball did hit the elbow it was already raised before the shot was taken That the VAR spent some time trying to identify whether the ball had touched Ayari's arm suggests there was at least some doubt about the Estupiñán offense If the VAR had felt Estupiñán's incident wasn't handball the referee would have had to go to the monitor to judge the Ayari incident; in pure process terms this would probably have been the correct result and referee Rob Jones wasn't interested in a spot kick Antonee Robinson nudges Ollie Watkins off the ball. BBCVAR review: There have been far worse examples of a defender using his body to ease an attacker off the ball none of which were ruled a VAR error by the Premier League's Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel The KMI panel voted 3-2 that it should have been given as a penalty by the on-field team but 5-0 that it hadn't reached the threshold for the VAR to get involved it was far less blatant than that of O'Shea Verdict: VAR has been consistent on this throughout the season saying such challenges should be left to the referee Villa players were already appealing for handball before the Sessegnon hit the ball and referee Jones ruled it out when it crossed the line VAR review: You have to question the wisdom of Sessegnon for shooting as there was no possibility he could actually score If he'd laid the ball off for a teammate to shoot then the goal would have counted an accidental handball offense only applies to the scorer of the goal Verdict: Any kind of accidental handball which comes immediately before a player scores means the goal has to be disallowed VAR decision: Penalty stands, scored by Cole Palmer VAR review: Quansah gave Caicedo the perfect opportunity to use the challenge and win the penalty where the VAR intervened and the Newcastle player was booked for simulation Quansah's challenge didn't stop before the running path of the opponent Caicedo certainly played for the penalty, but he could only win it due to the actions of the Liverpool defender. Verdict: There was clear evidence of contact by the defender on the attacker, so the VAR will always support the on-field decision. Moisés Caicedo made sure there was contact from Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah for the penalty. BBCSome factual parts of this article include information provided by the Premier League and PGMOL. But they would depart with a victory that gave their hopes of a first ever European qualification a tonic. It was almost a footnote that it also added up to a Premier League double over Arsenal – after their 2-0 home win over them last October Iraola’s team are realistically chasing an eighth-placed finish, which could be enough for a place in next season’s Uefa Conference League. Their belief has soared – in stark contrast to that of Arsenal. His opener was his 15th goal for the club, as many goals as he managed in 245 games for West Ham. Opta Thank you for your feedback. It was a sickener for Bournemouth, for whom this was arguably a bigger game given their European aspirations via the league. They played a full part in a lively first half and they created the first big chance, Evanilson heading high from Milos Kerkez’s whipped cross on 26 minutes. He was all alone in front of goal having given Jakub Kiwior the slip. Photograph: Crystal Pix/MB Media/Getty ImagesThe Bournemouth winger’s next act was to hurl the throw-in into the box whereupon Huijsen, drifting back from near the goal to the six-yard line, craned his neck to direct his header home. It was a stunning piece of athleticism and precision. Bournemouth sensed blood. Marcus Tavernier, whom Iraola had moved from the right to the No 10 position after Semenyo’s introduction, went close with a shot that deflected over. When Scott curled over the corner, Bournemouth forged ahead. Tavernier won the flick-on and Evanilson was stronger than Ødegaard at the far post, managing to get something to the ball, forcing it home. Raya was guilty of a fumble into the bargain. On Bournemouth’s two goals, Arsenal legend Wright told Premier League Productions: “The two goals were soft goals. I don’t want to dig the boys out because I know what is coming and I know how much it means to them. But at the same time you do need to out in a better performance than that.” Wright added: “For the first goal, I think it’s a really good goal from where he is but the marking. “Both defenders are not looking at the player who is about to score. That was really strange to see especially when you know how diligent Arsenal are with their defensive work but not this season they haven’t been as good from set pieces. “So to see them concede two goals like that at this stage of the season is disappointing, I know they are knackered, they must be physically and mentally but they have to go for that last push. They have to finish it off. “When you look at that second goal, no one challenges. The ball is great but if you look at Odegaard he is not looking at the ball he is reacting off the man. “If he is faced around, maybe the same as Lewis-Skelly he can have a better opportunity to move into a position to stop that. He can’t see anything even if it has come off his arm. “It is a concern. The biggest concern though is how static we were. We don’t have Gabriel to organise things and be a bit more aggressive. But the way we were in those incidents, no one seemed to be doing anything. it seemed very easy. It is poor defending.” Arsenal lost the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek with the Gunners now having to go to France and win on Wednesday. When sked if Arsenal can still do it, Wright said: “Yes they can.” Jurrien Timber was ruled out of the Gunners’ clash with Bournemouth on Saturday with a knock and Arteta wasn’t sure if the Dutchman would be fit to face PSG. On Timber, Arteta said: “Confident? No. “At the moment no because he wasn’t able to play here and we play again in four days.” Want more transfer news?
