Kevin Schade has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season
Brentford kept their hopes of European qualification alive by coming from behind to beat Manchester United in a 4-3 thriller at the Gtech Community Stadium
Mason Mount gave the visitors the lead with just his second goal for the club
finishing off a fine cross from winger Alejandro Garnacho
Brentford equalised when captain Mikkel Damsgaard saw his cross deflect in off defender Luke Shaw
who was captaining a much-changed United side
The Bees took the lead six minutes later in controversial fashion
when Kevin Schade towered over United defender Tyler Fredricson to power in his 10th goal of the season with a superb header
United were furious when play wasn't stopped after defender Matthijs de Ligt went down with an injury earlier in the move
Schade wrapped up the three points 20 minutes from time
heading in his second of the day from close range from a Bryan Mbeumo cross
with the Bees cutting through United's defence to allow Michael Kayode to slip in Yoane Wissa for a fourth of the afternoon
Argentina international Garnacho scored a stunning long-range effort eight minutes from time to give United a sliver of hope
United then ensured it was a nervy finish for Brentford when second half substitute Amad Diallo scored five minutes into seven added minutes of injury time
one point behind eighth-placed Bournemouth
Europa League 'papering over the cracks' for Man Utd - Rooney
Amorim praises 'young kids' after Brentford defeat
Ruben Amorim said the trip to Brentford was about getting the three points to end a run of six matches without a win in the Premier League
he would have confessed that coming through the game unscathed and without any injury worries was all that mattered before Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao
The Portuguese coach made eight changes to his side from the team that beat Bilbao 3-0 on Thursday
Manuel Ugarte and Garnacho the only players to retain their spots
If Schade putting Brentford ahead with their second goal in six minutes was tough to watch
then the image of De Ligt clutching his hamstring and asking to be substituted was even worse
The Dutchman pulled up in the move that led to Brentford's winner and remained on the ground as Schade exploited United's lack of aerial presence at the back
The 25-year-old was making his first start since missing six matches throughout April with an ankle injury
With Bilbao on Thursday and a possible Europa League final on the horizon
Amorim was counting on the experience and physicality of De Ligt for the run-in
Amorim made a beeline for the defender as he made his way off the pitch to ascertain the severity of the injury and the Dutchman's response couldn't have been good given he headed immediately down the tunnel
Amorim said he is "concerned" about De Ligt's injury heading into next season
"I'm really concerned - not about Thursday
We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect and have players for Thursday
but I'm more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season," said the Portuguese
United are already without Lisandro Martinez
who picked up a season-ending injury in February
while Diogo Dalot could be out for the rest of the campaign with a calf problem
Brentford's Frank 'very happy' with Man Utd win
With so much yet to be decided in the final month of the season
European qualification is a bit of a moving target
There could be as many as 10 English teams in Europe next season
Champions League and of course the Premier League
It could be that eighth place is enough for a spot in the Europa Conference League
will do all they can to finish as high as possible and see where it leaves them
If that's the attitude they're taking into the final three games of the season
Schade became the third Brentford player to reach 10 goals or more in the Premier League this season
No other club has three players on 10 goals or more
The 62 goals Brentford have scored in the Premier League is a tally only bettered by Liverpool
Fulham and Wolves to come in their final three matches of the season
need to win all three if they're to qualify for Europe for the first time since supporters got their passports out for the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1992

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim dropped Rasmus Hojlund to the bench and instead started Chido Obi-Martin in the frontline against Brentford
Chido Obi-Martin made history for United on the weekend by becoming the youngest-ever player to start a match for the Red Devils in the Premier League
The 17-year-old Red Devils striker, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2024 after he left the Arsenal academy
played the full 90 minutes in Sunday’s 4-3 defeat
Chido’s performance caught the eye of United fans and the Red Devils talent was unable to make a real impact in the final third against Brentford.

Speaking after the contest at the Gtech Community Stadium
Amorim admitted that Chido showed he was “really naive sometimes” with his body movement
“Yeah, it’s really important because you can train a lot with the first team, but to have that feeling, playing with the players, feeling the players, the speed of the game, I think is the best thing,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website
but you can feel it is really naive sometimes in the way he puts his body

United defeated Athletic Club 3-0 in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals and Amorim is refusing to play down the importance of the second-leg tie
“I think it’s stressful to lose games,” he said after the Brentford match, as per Manchester United’s official website
I have no doubts that we are playing better and we are understanding the way we play
we have to take all the hits in this moments
so we need to accept that and to think about now [is] Thursday
United will host Athletic Club for the return leg at Old Trafford on Thursday evening
with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time for the second-leg semi-final clash
“I think it’s stressful to lose games – when we’re fighting for a title it’s not stressful,” Amorim said in reference to United’s midweek need to defend their 3-0 lead against Athletic Club to reach the Europa League final. He made eight changes here, for the third youngest Premier League starting XI on record.
He defended his callow selection, saying: “We as a club we need to understand in this moment we have a big responsibility. We have to prepare a squad for different competitions.”
United suffered the first-half loss of defender Matthijs de Ligt to what appeared a serious injury
“I don’t know,” said his manager of the extent of the issue
with Harry Maguire coming on and Luke Shaw going off with the Athletic tie in mind
Shaw had to go out because we need players for Thursday.”
And despite defeat and being outplayed by Brentford, Amorim said United’s youngsters should have taken plenty from the experience: “You can train a lot with the first team but to have that feeling playing with the players, feeling the players, the speed of the game, I think is the best thing.”
A delighted Thomas Frank saw his team revive their hopes of playing European football next season by climbing to ninth. “I think we definitely have momentum,” he said. “The last 13 we’ve had a really good run of games, there’s a flow of playing well. We need to keep that up. The next one is the most important game and that’s Ipswich away. It’s already a good season, let’s see if it can be a good or incredible season.”

What Palmer said [about ignoring comments on social media] was a great example to young players because I don't care how mentally strong you are
one comment on social media can affect you
I think that players have to be so careful on it
It's great to give people an example of how you live your life and the day-to-day but the other side of it when people have the ability to just abuse you whenever they want - that's not healthy for anyone
It's already hard enough being a professional footballer
The best thing you can do a lot of the time is to just turn it of and get on with being a footballer

"We came back after being 2-0 down and we didn't give up
"In some moments a few percentages were not there."
On Chelsea: "They were a constant threat on the counter-attack
Well organised and so many great individuals
"It will always be a difficult game to play here
but for us to play the way we did tells me also why we won the league
but it also tells me if you have a small drop off in the final third you can concede or not score
"A wise man once said to me 'nothing good comes from losing a football game' and that's how we experience it
but the amount of times we could play through Chelsea was much more than half a season ago
"In the final third we were not as aggressive and we missed a few percent to score the goal."

Pat NevinFormer Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live at Stamford Bridge
It was a good performance from various players
the two central defenders were fabulous but you have to caveat it slightly - this was not Liverpool at their very best
It was low power Liverpool until 70 minutes
and then you saw the real Liverpool turning up
Chelsea had a difficult time around Christmas and New Year
got themselves on a good run and now have got it absolutely in their own hands
If they get just as good as this out of Cole Palmer

Liverpool manager Arne Slot speaking to Sky Sports: "A wise man once said nothing good comes from winning a football game and I have to agree with him
Maybe we missed that little bit which we usually have
We missed a few percentages to get that result
On what could have been improved: "If you look at how we reacted after being 2-0 down
you can't afford a lot and that's what we saw today
It's always good to see some fringe players playing now with starters
Now to see them playing with the other ones
On whether the fringe players are playing for their Liverpool futures: "They deserve to play these games because they have trained so hard this season
Every time they did so well so that's why I think they deserved to play this game
We don't judge them only on this game
we judge them every day on the training ground and in the moments that they play for us."
"It's already a big summer because we extended Virgil [van Dijk] and Mo [Salah] and for large parts of the season
I've said already that I am happy with the squad we have
We will see what the summer brings but sometimes it can be good to bring fresh energy
It has already been a good summer and we won the league
Only if we see someone on the market who can improve us."

He is on a booking but Pawson does not think it is worthy of a second
Fredrik Hammar had a two-year stint at Brentford between 2019 and 2021
The Swede played only once for the Bees’ first-team but he was knocking on the door
having done well for their reserves side during that period
Injuries had hindered his progress at Brentford but the midfielder
has stated that he was offered a new deal by the London club but rejected it
He told Fotbollskanalen’s podcast Lundh
when asked about what he lacked as a player back then:
“If you look at Brentford’s team today
I think most of the squad was in the Championship
The player I was going to compete with was Christian Norgaard
who is now their captain in the Premier League
The level of the squad was very high in the Championship and in order for you to break in
but then Norgaard played 90 minutes every match
I also competed with Josh Dasilva and Mathias Jensen
who both have 200-300 games in Brentford today.”
Reflecting on his decision to reject the offer of a new deal from Brentford
“I’ve always gone with my gut feeling
like when I changed Brommapojkarna to Akropolis
but then I got a three-year offer and five times more money than if I were to go back to Sweden
When I think back today I think: ‘Have I considered turning down this money and going home instead?'”
The midfielder revealed that he rejected the deal because he didn’t want to be loaned to clubs in the lower divisions and this encouraged him to join Acropolis
But I felt that I didn’t want to go on loan to League Two and get stuck there
Then suddenly I would be 23-24 and just playing non-league football in England
“So I’ll start going home and looking for a club then
I saw several players who had been in Brentford B and when you see what has happened to them today
they are playing non-league or they have stopped playing football.”
the 24-year-old stated: “I was terrified of being forgotten at some League One or League Two club and getting stuck on the bench
who had been flying in the Super League the year before and who invested heavily in me
They called and I thought I’d play there for six months.”
Hammar doesn’t seem to regret the decision to leave Brentford and since then he has played for not just Mechelen and Acropolis but Hammarby as well
He has been a regular at all those clubs and it shows that the decision to leave Thomas Frank’s side at a young age wasn’t a bad one
the Swede seems happy with the decision he made and that is all that matters

Brentford 4-3 Manchester United: Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo threatened a late comeback
Notifications can be managed in browser preferences.
Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-3 to bring the visitors back down to earth after they named their youngest-ever Premier League starting line-up
Just three days after United’s brilliant 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals, Ruben Amorim stuck to his word by naming a much-changed team but his side took an early lead through Mason Mount
with Brentford levelling via a deflection from Luke Shaw and Kevin Schade’s header putting Thomas Frank’s side in front before half time
Schade added his second following the restart
with Yonna Wiisa continuing his excellent season by notching a fourth
Alejandro Garnacho got one back late on with a spectacular finish
with Amad Diallo pulling another back in stoppage time
but it was not enough to prevent a 16th defeat of the Premier League season
kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe alive
while United turn their attention back to Thursday’s second leg against Athletic and attempting to reach the Europa League final
Follow all of the latest from the Gtech Community Stadium with our live blog below:
Two 1-1 draws in the other 2pm-ers - Alexander Isak snatched a potentially crucial point for Newcastle down at Brighton with a late penalty, while there was nothing to split West Ham and Tottenham, to rather sum up their disappointing campaigns.
Ruben Amorim will take the positives from that, you’d think, with his young side showing plenty of spirit to threaten a fightback. Matthijs de Ligt’s injury is a blow but all of the likely second-leg starters seemed to come through intact as attentions turn to Thursday’s meeting with Athletic Bilbao.
Well, it was dicier than it might have been for Brentford at the end, but their fine Premier League form continues with another valuable three points. They largely had control of the contest, that late scare aside, responding well to Mason Mount’s opener to build a lead that ultimately proved unassailable.
A great effort from Yoanne Wissa, forcing Altay Bayindir to palm away after a clever corner from Bryan Mbeumo.
A quick VAR check clears a nudge on Mbeumo in the box. We’re into bonus time now.
Thomas Frank had looked oh so calm at 4-1, but he’s beginning to fret and fuss now. His side earn a corner to waste crucial time.
A lovely goal from Amad Diallo and Manchester United have hope!
An unsighted Mark Flekken lets it through his legs and the visitors have a few minutes in which to chase an equaliser.
Harry Maguire threatens to produce another assist, though puts too much oomph on his cross for fellow centre-half Leny Yoro to head at goal.
Nathan Collins bravely throws himself in front of an Amad Diallo drive, taking it on the forehead and tumbling backwards. He’s soon on his feet again.

Frank Leboeuf rips into Manchester United following their 4-3 defeat at Brentford in the Premier League
A double from Kevin Schade guided Thomas Frank's side up to ninth with 52 points
with a potential Conference League spot within touching distance with three games left
while United remain in 15th place with 39 points
United's defeat condemned them to a club record 16th league defeat in a season in the Premier League era
The club's previous record of 14 losses was set last season under former manager Erik ten Hag
Their six-match winless run is their worst since 2015 during Louis van Gaal's tenure
there's a flow of playing well," Frank told the BBC
The next one is the most important game and that's Ipswich away
let's see if it can be an incredible season."
With an eye on the Europa League semifinal second leg against Athletic Club, Ruben Amorim named United's youngest ever starting lineup in Premier League history while 17-year-old forward Chido Obi became their youngest starter
Luke Shaw was the most senior player in United's lineup and the 29-year-old nearly gave Brentford the lead with an own goal when he tried to head a long ball back to keeper Altay Bayindir
But Brentford equalised from a set-piece when United failed to clear a long throw-in from Michael Kayode, with Mikkel Damsgaard's shot deflecting off Shaw for an own goal
Brentford took the lead six minutes later when Christian Nørgaard put in a cross to the far post and Schade rose above the defence to power home a header
United were livid, however, as defender Matthijs de Ligt had gone down on the edge of the box clutching his leg after a challenge but referee Anthony Taylor did not stop play
United had a couple of chances to equalise but they were smothered by the Brentford defence and Flekken before the home side came alive and made it 3-1 in the 70th minute
Bryan Mbeumo delivered another cross to the far post where Schade leapt into the air to score his second header
We want to win every game in the end to push for Europe," Schade said
Less than four minutes later, Brentford carved United's defence apart with a free-flowing move where Damsgaard and Kayode combined to give Yoane Wissa a simple tap-in into an empty net
United then flickered into life when Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho pulled the trigger from outside the box to find the net in the 82nd minute
Brentford fans were biting their nails when Amad's shot took a deflection and went through Flekken's legs to make it 4-3 but United ran out of time and fell to a record defeat
"There were changes but it's Manchester United so any team that goes out there that puts on the shirt we need to perform and win games," Mount said

THOMAS FRANK wants to splash out on Leicester's £25million-rated keeper Mads Hermansen
The Brentford boss is keen on a move for his fellow Dane, 24, who has been a standout during the Foxes’ disastrous season
Dutchman Mark Flekken
is the Bees’ current No 1 but Hermansen could boost Frank’s side
Hermansen has been linked with Champions League clubs but the Bees’ dressing room has a strong Danish feel with internationals Christian Norgaard, Mathias Jensen and Mikkel Damsgaard already there
The keeper has played for Denmark at youth level from under-16s all the way through to under-21s and was called up to the senior squad for their Euro 2024 qualifying matches

Kevin Schade scored twice as Brentford boosted their European hopes after surviving a nervy finish to hold out for a 4-3 victory over Manchester United
Yoane Wissa was also on target as Thomas Frank’s side recorded their third straight win
though they were given a late fright at the Gtech Community Stadium
Mason Mount’s early goal - his first in 13 months - was cancelled out by a Luke Shaw own goal, while Schade’s header completed the turnaround before half-time
The German nodded in his second after the break, while Wissa’s tap-in made it 4-1. Alejandro Garnacho's stunning long-range effort and a goal from substitute Amad
Sunday's win takes Brentford up to ninth in the Premier League table – six higher than Ruben Amorim’s side
Man Utd handed a full debut to Danish striker Chido Obi
as he became their youngest-ever player to start a Premier League match
United's starting XI, with an average age of just 22 years and 270 days, was also the third-youngest side named for a Premier League match, behind Middlesbrough's team at Fulham in May 2006 (20 years and 181 days) and Arsenal's side at Portsmouth in May 2009 (22 years and 237 days)
Amorim's side took the lead after 14 minutes when Garnacho exchanged passes with Kobbie Mainoo
before his low cross was turned in by Mount
However, Brentford drew level on 27 minutes as United failed to deal with Michael Kayode's long throw, and Mikkel Damsgaard's attempt to help the ball towards goal was deflected in by Shaw
The hosts then completed the turnaround six minutes later. With Matthijs de Ligt down injured, Schade nodded in Christian Norgaard's deep cross at the far post
Schade struck again to give Brentford breathing space in the 70th minute, reacting quickly to head home after Bryan Mbeumo’s attempted shot ricocheted kindly into his path
In scoring Schade's second goal - and his 10th in the Premier League this season - Brentford became only the third club in Europe's top five leagues to have three players who have netted 10+ league goals in the 2024/25 campaign
Things got even better for the Bees four minutes later as Kayode got in behind the United defence
before squaring for Wissa to tap into an empty net
Garnacho reduced the deficit when he flashed a fierce 20-yard effort into the top corner, beyond a flat-footed Mark Flekken
before Amad cut in from the right-hand side and curled the ball past the Brentford goalkeeper
A resurgent Brentford were aiming to continue their momentum after a four-match unbeaten league run, while also having ended their eight-game winless streak on home soil against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out
Despite sounding an early warning with Schade firing over from Yehor Yarmoliuk’s deep cross
the Bees fell behind to Man Utd's swift counter that was finished by Mount
Nevertheless, they responded well and quickly flipped the contest in their favour, and it took smart saves from Altay Bayindir to prevent them further extending their lead before the break
Wissa could not quite apply the finishing touch from a set-piece just before the hour mark
but Schade made no mistake as he notched his 10th Premier League goal of the season
though what looked set to be a comfortable victory turned into a hard-earned one
Flekken was helpless for Garnacho’s superb strike
but will know he perhaps should have done better with Amad’s attempt
the three points are the most important thing for Brentford
who will want to continue their strong finish to the season away at relegated Ipswich Town next weekend
with their UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao coming up on Thursday
the Red Devils would have been eager to end their five-match winless Premier League streak
Not since December 2015 had they gone six without victory in the top flight
and the visitors had an early scare when Shaw almost headed into his own net after just three minutes
United were unbeaten after scoring first in the Premier League this season
so the omens looked promising when Mount netted his first goal since March 2024 which
But it proved a false dawn for Amorim’s side, who lost De Ligt to injury during the first half - the defender replaced by Harry Maguire after only 35 minutes - and soon found themselves behind as they struggled to deal with set-pieces and balls into the box
Garnacho gave them hope inside the final 10 minutes
and an improbable comeback seemed a little more likely when Amad’s shot squeezed through Flekken’s grasp in stoppage time
and attention now returns to Europe with the hope of converting a healthy 3-0 advantage into securing a place in the Europa League final

Thomas Frank: "I think we definitely have momentum
The last 13 we've had a really good run of games
let's see if it can be a good or incredible season."
Rubem Amorim: "I liked (performance of) the young kids
I liked how we controlled the game without many occasions to score
In first 30 mins we struggle with set-pieces but we already knew we didn't have the height to fight that
In second half we are near the draw and we suffer two goals like we did in beginning when we suffer one and let it go
We fight but in the end we lose but good things for the future
"I don't know so I'm really concerned [about De Ligt's injury] - not about Thursday
but I'm more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season."
Since Amorim took charge on 11 November 2024, only the now-relegated sides of Ipswich Town and Leicester City (both three), and Southampton (one) have won fewer Premier League games than Man Utd's total of six
Brentford have won three successive Premier League matches for the first time since October/November 2023
Man Utd lost a Premier League match in which they led for the first time this season
meaning all 20 clubs have now done so in the 2024/25 competition
It’s only the third time in a single Premier League campaign that every side lost at least one game in which they were ahead

But the Red Devils still have to wheel themselves out for weekend action
and Amorim’s team selection showed what an unwanted distraction heading to West London today was

But while that feat will look bad on Amorim’s CV and United’s record books
the biggest worry from another defeat is the injury situation
Amorim made eight changes from the side that went to Bilbao and beat Athletic Club 3-0 on Thursday
While United aren’t in their most troubling injury crisis of the season
the return of Matthijs de Ligt was a major boost
but a surprising one to see him named from the off
The 25-year-old centre-back has struggled with injuries in the past but his time at Old Trafford has been spent virtually injury free
that is until he suffered a foot injury that kept him out for five games before he made his return off the bench against Bilbao

The ultimate boost from the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium was to leave injury-free and everyone fit for the second leg on Thursday. But that hasn’t happened.
Brentford entered the clash as firm favourites but such a drubbing was not what Amorim and United fans expected before such a monumental game on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta faced the media after our 1-1 Premier League draw with Brentford
injuries heading to Madrid next week and more
Here’s a full transcript from the post-match press conference…
On if we had the intensity to get over the line…
Well after the equaliser especially because we play with 10 men a lot
I think we tried and we had two quite clear situations to finish the action better
I think we have to be critical with ourselves
we can’t defend the space close to the taker well enough and then it's a lottery
because they do that really well and it's our fault
we had an idea because we know certain players that we picked in the starting lineup that they could not be able to finish the game
that we have to take him out and then for sure
we didn't expect what happened with Jorginho and we end up playing with 10 men
I think had an unbelievable action as well in the goal we scored today
carrying the ball and opening space to the right moment to release Thomas and one situation with the keeper
and I think he had a really strong performance
On why the atmosphere was different to the Real Madrid game..
I don't know but atmosphere was different to Tuesday that’s for sure
I don’t know if this was playing the back of the crowd
today what we going to do was increase the probability of us really challenging for what we are looking for in the Premier League and with that result
On if the Real Madrid game was in the players’ minds…
I think the players know that when you come to the Premier League and the position that we played today
how tough it was going to be and what it requires and it requires your best every time to win
On the season being about the Champions League…
We still have six games to play in the Premier League
He felt something so we didn't want to take any risks
so they will check in now and see how he is
He could not be in the condition to be in the squad today and be selected
On Rice’s running power helping open up teams…
I think the first half we have a few options when we break the press
when they're more manner orientated and they want to take more risk to
to open those spaces and set some set pieces
it’s exactly the situation because it’s a lot of space to run
the timing of their arrivals and how they have to score the goals
On not being closer to Liverpool in the Premier League..
Yes it is difficult because obviously there are a lot of reasons why we are with that distance [to Liverpool in the Premier League] and the amount of things that we have to deal with and still we are where we but yeah

Yoane Wissa cancelled out Thomas Partey’s second-half opener to earn Brentford a share of the spoils at the Emirates Stadium
it is a very good point against a very good Arsenal team that beat Real Madrid four days ago,” says Brentford’s boss in an interview with Sky
“Fighting back to get to 1-1 shows the character in our team
I would have loved us to create more but they also defended very well.”
On Wissa’s latest goal: “It is such a privilege. How many No 9s have scored 15 Premier League goals this year for a team that, with all due respect, is not amongst best in the league? That is a big credit to Wissa but also the chances we create.”
On conceding from one of their own corners: “We are so annoyed because we were doing so many things well and we know they are good on the break.”
On Brentford’s ambitions for the rest of the season: “We would love to compete for Europe and aim for as high as possible. That is what we are fighting for every single year and game. We are never celebrating a point but it is a very good point. We will keep pushing.”
12 Apr 202521.07 CESTArteta on Real Madrid: "It's time to recover well"“It’s time to recover well and tomorrow we start to start preparing for the most beautiful game of the season.”
On Norgaard’s first-half challenge on Martinelli: “My reaction says everything.”
Should it have been a red card? “My reaction says everything.”
“Second half, we tried to have more chances, to go more forward and of course we concede a counter I think we could avoid. After that we just try to make sure we come back and we know we are strong on set-pieces. To be fair, the goal I scored is the kind I score in training. I was very happy to score that goal, especially today.”
12 Apr 202520.35 CESTThis just in: Jason Tindall will take charge of Newcastle for their match against Manchester United tomorrow afternoon, as Eddie Howe is in hospital undergoing tests. The Newcastle manager has been feeling ill all week, did not take his pre-match press conference yesterday and was admitted to hospital last night. We wish him well.
12 Apr 202520.13 CEST84 min: There’s a break in play as Jorginho goes to ground grimacing in discomfort. He appears to have hurt his chest needs treatment and both managers use the pause to give their teams a late pep-talk.
12 Apr 202520.09 CEST80 min: Saka has a shot from the edge of the area blocked after being fed the ball by Odegaard, whose control of a ball over the top in the build-up was simply exquisite.

12 Apr 202519.54 CEST65 min: Rice overhits a scooped pass in the direction of Martinelli, who is unable to win the race to the byline against the ball, which bounces out for a goal-kick.
12 Apr 202519.52 CEST64 min: Arsenal triple-substitution: Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Myles Lewis-Skelly come on, with Tierney, Zinchenko and Nwaneri making way.

12 Apr 202519.38 CEST50 min: Arsenal win what seems like their 1,385th corner of the match. Nwaneri’s inswinger isn’t one of his better ones and Brentford clear at the near post.
12 Apr 202519.37 CEST48 min: Raya tries to pick out Zinchenko with a long pass from deep but Keane Lewis Potter turns on his afterburners and gets back to win the ball ahead of the Ukrainian, helped in no small part by a conspicuous nudge to Zinchenko’s back that knocked him off balance.
12 Apr 202519.35 CEST46 min: Martinelli pings a cross towards Nwaneri at the far post but, under pressure from a defender, the teenager is unable to connect with his attempted volley off the outside of his left boot from close range.

12 Apr 202519.13 CEST42 min: Trossard meets Nwaneri’s delivery at the near corner of the six-yard box but sends his header high and wide of the angle of far post and crossbar.
12 Apr 202519.10 CEST40 min: Tierney sends a high, hanging cross towards the far post, where Keane Lewis-Potter nods clear.
12 Apr 202519.09 CEST37 min: Oleksandr Zinchenko pings the ball out to the left touchline, where Kieran Tierney controls it and is immediately penalised for straying offside. Like a sniper staring down a rifle-barrel, he closes one eye and peers intently across the pitch towards the linesman, as if to suggest there’s no way he had done so.

12 Apr 202519.05 CEST34 min: The name of Kevin Schade goes into the book for a cynical and injudicious challenge on William Saliba.

coaching staff and fans appealing for a stiffer punishment
VAR decide there’s no need to upgrade the booking to a red card and that seems fair enough to me
Other opinions are almost certainly available
12 Apr 202518.54 CEST23 min: Arsenal win another corner
It’s on Rice’s side of the pitch and his inswinger towards the far post appears to hit Saliba’s back before going out for another corner off Keane Lewis-Potter
It was always likely to be lower-key here, Mikel Arteta making five changes to his team and watching them labour. The blood and thunder of the Madrid tie was missing; the do-or-die imperatives. It was a slog for Arsenal and as the hour mark approached, Arteta knew he had to do something. He readied three stellar substitutes – Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka.
it was their presence on the touchline that provided the inspiration
Or maybe it was just that Declan Rice is having the week of his life

Arsenal were in front before Arteta could make the triple change

The Arsenal manager was desperate to avoid any injuries and it was why he reacted so explosively to Christian Nørgaard’s scissors-style foul on Gabriel Martinelli in the 28th minute
for which the Brentford captain was booked
Arteta ranted at the fourth official and Martinelli would later describe it as a potential leg-breaker

Brentford had created a clear chance in the 22nd minute

Photograph: Peter Cziborra/Action Images/ReutersBrighton might have quickly levelled had Yankuba Minteh got his angles correct before Danny Welbeck, surely Brighton’s player of the season, made up for an earlier miss by heading the equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
Brighton again failed to cope with their forewarning of Brentford starting halves with intention. Within three minutes, Mikkel Damsgaard’s pass found Wissa, who instinctively laid the ball into the path of Mbeumo, the shot deflecting off Lewis Dunk’s chest. “I am very happy that he’s shining and the main man,” said Frank. “It’s a duo, with Wissa scoring more goals in open play but Bryan is an incredible footballer.”
Frank’s determination is his team do not sit on leads. Another sweeping move cut Brighton to ribbons, Damgsaard fading his pass to Mbeumo, who laid up Wissa, the shot deflected in off the again unfortunate Dunk.
When Welbeck was subbed for Yasin Ayari, Brighton fans loudly questioned their manager and why their team now had no striker. “I wanted to have more midfielders to control the game and more connections with the fast wingers,” said Hürzeler.
Bloom, seated in the away end due to his differences with Benham, was left in no uncertain terms of doubts in a young manager who said: “I focus on the game.”
Kaoru Mitoma’s finish from Jack Hinshelwood’s pass briefly revived spirits. As did eight added minutes, extended by that horrible collision. By then, Brighton’s hopes had already been extinguished by Nørgaard, his goal embodying Brentford’s belief there can always be another.

BBC Sport football news reporter at Brentford Community StadiumPublished6 April 2025174 CommentsWhen Enzo Maresca's starting line-up was announced before Chelsea's trip to Brentford on Sunday
there was a sense of surprise among many Blues fans across social media
after a drab goalless draw at Brentford stretched their winless away run to eight matches to leave their Champions League hopes in the balance
the questions about his team selection grew even louder
Marc Cucurella and an in-form Pedro Neto against their west London rivals
All four of Chelsea's rested stars came on in the second half and the Blues went from having just six shots and one on target before the interval to 17 shots and four on target
The Chelsea boss also faced criticism from sections of the away end
who have shown increasing frustration at his style of play
attack" and "we've had a shot" during a poor first half
the fight for the Champions League places is looking increasingly competitive
Aston Villa and Newcastle all within three points of the Blues
With a Conference League quarter-final against Legia Warsaw to come on Thursday
and the likes of Palmer and Jackson just returning from injuries
Maresca was quick to defend his squad rotation
The Italian also blamed the quick turnaround for his selection gamble
claiming it was unfair the Blues had 24 hours less than Brentford to prepare for the match
having played Tottenham at home on Thursday
"Not all of them were 100%," he said
"The idea was to start one way and finish another way
The plan nearly worked because we created more in the second half but the volume probably wasn't enough to win the game."
When pressed by BBC Sport on whether he could have rotated in other games
he added: "This is a different opinion
I am here to try to do the best for the club and players
"I work every day with the players so I can see how they are
I am not sure if Spurs at home is harder than Brentford away

Newcastle and Nottingham Forest to come before the end of the season
It feels an age away now when Chelsea were being talked about as being Liverpool's most realistic title challengers - a 2-1 win at home to Brentford securing a seventh straight win in December
There are also concerns about misfiring forwards with Palmer on a long goal drought
Jackson 10 games without a goal while Sancho has not scored in 20 matches in all competitions
Maresca is facing increasing criticism about Chelsea's conservative style of play and failure to qualify for the Champions League - with a top-five finish likely to be enough to seal a place - would only amplify this
Chelsea's accounts highlight how important the lucrative Champions League is to the club
Earlier this week they announced a £128m profit, which included income from selling their women's team to parent company BlueCo for £200m
After several transfer windows of lavish spending the club would have lost more than £70m without this repositioning
and thus fallen foul of the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations
Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali's BlueCo also announced a heavy loss of £400m
and there was increased borrowing with interest payments due
The substantial revenues involved in playing in the Champions League are crucial to help deliver a return on investment and in a season without a front-of-shirt sponsor
competing in Europe's elite competition would attract the kind of £70m-a-year sponsor the club is looking for
That's not to mention the importance of qualifying for the competition to star players like Palmer
I said since day one that our target is to bring this club back to where it should be
"Since day one we have been in the top four or five so we hope to finish there."
Valky: The mood among the fellow Chelsea fans attending the Brentford match having seen the starting line-up is one of incredulity
Legia Warsaw is the match where you rest key players
What a comedown after the excellent and exciting Spurs performance
Nana: Really hope Maresca knows what he's doing because that's got to be one of the most toothless attacks I've seen for a while
Rwanda: Enzo Maresca really left out Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson versus Brentford… and we're meant to be pushing for top four

Kevin Schade scored his second and completed his brace in the 70th minute before Yoane Wissa added the fourth for Thomas Frank’s side only four minutes later
United fought back and Alejandro Garnacho scored from a stunning strike in the 82nd minute before Amad Diallo pulled another one back deep into injury time
the Red Devils were unable to find the crucial equaliser before the full-time whistle and Brentford walked away with all three points against United
United have suffered 16 Premier League defeats in the 2024-25 campaign and the Red Devils have only three league matches left in their woeful season
The Red Devils have won 10 matches in the Premier League from 35 fixtures and Ruben Amorim has struggled to turn around Manchester United’s form in the league
Amorim rolled out his tactical system at United after his arrival from Sporting CP in 2024 and the 40-year-old Portuguese manager’s tactics have been criticised
BBC pundit Danny Murphy said that it was “bizarre” to see how United were playing in the formation against Brentford
“It is about intensity, but with wingbacks, different to a back four, it allows you to go and press because you’ve got the extra centre half behind you,” he said, as per Goal.
“But surely that’s what they do in training, no? If you’re a coach of a system, the basics of this system with wing-backs is they press the wide men quick and it doesn’t look like they’re doing it. It’s bizarre for me to see.”

Wayne Rooney responded to Danny Murphy and the United legend claimed that it was “strange” to the different roles for players in Amorim’s tactics on Sunday
because that’s why you play a back five with wingbacks,” he explained
“They have to put pressure on the ball or otherwise you get outnumbered in the midfield and the ball comes back into midfield
Chido Obi-Martin played the full 90 minutes for United after Amorim deployed him in the Premier League tie against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium
The 17-year-old talent made history for the Red Devils after Chido Obi-Martin became the youngster United player to start in a Premier League clash for the club
Chido was largely ineffective and Rooney said that the “inexperienced” United striker was receiving “no help” from his teammates in the 4-3 defeat to Brentford
“There was a lack of movement and a lack of know-how on the pitch,” Rooney added
“They’ve got a 17-year-old lad up front – the youngest ever to start up front for United – and they’re just launching balls up to him
“I really felt for Obi today because you can tell he’s inexperienced
but it looked like he had no help; they were just throwing balls up to him.”
United will now return to Europa League action for their second-leg semi-final match against Athletic Club on Thursday evening at Old Trafford
Brentford hosted Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium and the Bees came from 1-0 down and defeated the Red Devils 4-3 on Sunday afternoon

Ruben Amorim’s men are now unable to climb into the top half of the table and the Red Devils will end the campaign with their worst finish in the Premier League era
United’s season hinges on their success in the Europa League and the Red Devils must lift the trophy if they are to secure any European football for next season
The Europa League would offer United a route back to the Champions League and Amorim would also lift his first major silverware as United manager at Old Trafford

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Danny Murphy was critical of Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and his tactics in the defeat to Brentford on Sunday
“I get that there’s young players, I understand that and they’re playing against good teams,” he said, as per Goal
personnel and system and he’s been there a while now
“When you play a system that much and you work on it in training
irrelevant of who is playing because they should be organised in that system.”
Amorim rotated his United first-team squad for the Premier League visit to the Gtech Community Stadium ahead of the upcoming Europa League tie against Athletic Club.

The 40-year-old ex-Sporting CP manager offered minutes to different United youth academy players against Brentford, including Chido Obi-Martin and Tyler Fredricson
Wayne Rooney suggested that he found it “strange” the different formation between the Red Devils’ youth academy team and the United first team at Old Trafford
Responding to Danny Murphy, the United legend said: “You’d think so
but I think the second team are playing a back four
because those players who are coming into the first team now with the under-23s or under-21s are playing a different system
Getting to the Europa League final is papering over a lot of cracks for Manchester United and that needs solving quickly.”
READ MORE: Man Utd talent who did ‘quite well’ vs Brentford needed more support from one player, Ruben Amorim’s verdict is clear
Following United’s 4-3 Premier League defeat to Brentford
Amorim insisted that it is important for the youth players to pick up first-team minutes and experience
“Yeah, it’s really important because you can train a lot with the first team, but to have that feeling, playing with the players, feeling the players, the speed of the game, I think is the best thing,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“So, again, I think they did quite well. Chido [Obi] fought all the game, but you can feel it is really naive sometimes in the way he puts his body.
“He’s going to understand what is the feeling of playing in these kind of games. This is the best way.
“So, we can take that as a positive, but the rest we lose. We didn’t win points, so it’s just that.”
United will now host La Liga outfit Athletic Club for the second-leg Europa League semi-final showdown at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
Brentford have re-started an academy in what might
the B team remains and this is a club in a very different position to where it was 10 years ago
explained: "We had an academy but closed it in 2016
The reason for that was that we were a very small Championship club with low revenue and the spend on the academy wasn't meteoric but still big enough and we felt if we wanted promotion we had to spend every penny on that target
"We couldn't wait 10 years to bring players through
we wanted promotion to establish some revenues
"That's why we focused on our first team and B team
The idea with the B team was these are players closer to the first team
capable of making a genuine impact -players like Mads Roerslev and Marcus Forss came through that for our promotion team
we reviewed it and considered re-opening the academy because our revenues improved
Brexit had an impact because it limits overseas player availability but also increases demand on British players from all other clubs across the Football League
we got Fin Stevens in from Woking and sold to St Pauli from our B team
so there is that increased demand for English talent
We also need more youth teams to get our Uefa license if we end up playing in Europe
and the final thing was the Premier League mandate changed the rules to tell us to open an academy so that was the final thing tipping us over the edge to do it."
He added at the launch of the new academy building: "The B team still exists and will do what it has been doing but will now have a pipeline from Under-9s to the B team
which also plays in Professional Development League
but also play the same bespoke games as they always have done
The B team is still the link to the first team."
formerly a coach at Liverpool and Manchester City
further explained: "We treat it like a private school for footballers
about five-to-one with combined age groups at younger levels
bespoke programmes and give an opportunity to grow
"We also encourage kids to continue playing grassroots sport to aid their friendships away from Brentford and take some of the pressure off
We've recruited 114 players and hired 54 full-time staff members with around 30 part-time staff on top to build out that team
"We are the first club ever to go from a Category 4 academy to Category 2 and the next step will be adding an indoor pitch
"Our Under-18s were the first men's team to have a female coach in Lydia Bedford
which fulfil the U21s programme and we are in the play-offs
we're in the final of Premier League Cup
competing against Monaco and Nice in the Atlantic Cup
"As a dad of four myself - I know it is about caring first and we want to be admired as the most caring
which fits the ethos of the rest of the club."

he answered a number of questions around the futures of key Bees players:
On Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo: "I have a lot of insight but that doesn't mean I will talk about it
if I was looking at a striker or a wide player as another club then they have to be on a shortlist
But the number of clubs that can sign them is a small number worldwide so time will tell if a club has that need or requirement
On if they can be retained by offering new contracts: "Yes
what I'd say is there is always a very good chance of players staying
there is always a chance we can keep our best players
We said we would convert him from a wide player to a striker - we did that and he was successful - and if we didn't get promoted we would look to sell him
we made a promise to him and we needed cash at that time because it was Covid
But now we are a Premier League club we don't need to sell Wissa
There is more chance that a player will stay for that reason but if a big club makes a really good offer for our players then we have to look at it
then use the money to invest wisely."
On if players like Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho could replace them if they left: "Yes
to have the players already on board when we sell our players
Igor Thiago was bought in February 2024 because Ivan Toney was leaving
He has been unlucky with injury but the other players have come in and done well
the solution to Rico Henry missing football was sitting under our noses all along - Keane Lewis-Potter has done an unbelievable job to the extent he is maybe an even better player at left-back

became coaches or play at a lower level."
Brentford's growth off the field extends to owner Matthew Benham's restructure of the club into a new holding company - Best Intentions Analytics
which bought Spanish third division club Merida
Director of football Phil Giles further explained the strategy behind the expansion: "Merida will be run for its own success
first in Spain but it is also close to Portugal
so it is one of the markets many clubs look at
It was an opportunity as the previous owner Mark Heffernan was looking to sell
did good work and knew Matthew Benham already and it was sensible numbers
"There will be a conversation about a link but that's very early in the process
We will look at how Brentford can help Merida grow and win
It is easy to say it but hard to do it in practice so both are successful
"I don't think we will ever have many clubs [in the multi-club model]
we are not looking for another club but it doesn't mean we are not open in the future
We just want to do this really well and we are trying embed the relationships on the ground
settle it down and that will take time."

Brentford beat a yet more underpowered United selection than is normal, even for this season of historic mediocrity. MANCHESTER UNITED players were outclassed as they were beaten by Brentford
Despite taking an early lead, a much-changed Red Devils team were overpowered by the London side
Man United fielded a weak-looking side as manager Ruben Amorim rang the changes
It was also the club's youngest ever starting XI in the Premier League, including Chido Obi
But it was not enough to deal with Brentford as they succumbed to a 4-3 defeat that was only made more palatable after late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo
SunSport's Conor Jones has given his ratings for the Man United players..
He wasn’t entirely at fault for Mikkel Damsgaard’s equaliser, as the ball crept in after an unfortunate deflection off captain Luke Shaw
He did manage a solid stop to deny Kevin Schade and blocked a near post flick from Norgaard but conceding four is a terrible day out no matter the circumstances
The young defender relentlessly tracked Schade’s runs on the right but couldn’t prevent the German from rising to score the home side’s second.
Fredricson has a long way to go before he becomes a Premier League level defender
The Dutchman started well, making a number of important clearances to stop the ball entering the danger area until he was forced off after a challenge with Yoane Wissa
The Bees went on to score their second whilst De Ligt was down making for a disappointing run out
For Amorim, this will cause a huge headache with a Europa League semi-final on Thursday marking his side’s biggest game of the season and only real lifeline
Shaw returned to the Manchester United eleven to bring experience and composure amidst a sea of academy talent joining the lineup
The Englishman had a shaky start to say the least
nearly heading into his own net in the third minute as he tried to nod back to Bayindir
United’s day went from bad to worse with the first two goals both resulting from set pieces and the English defender was pulled off at half time
The Danish wing-back had a quiet first half
not finding much joy down the right and failed to prevent Kevin Schade from scoring with his back-post header to make it 2-1
When United struggle to create anything going forwards the wing back needs to offer more
The Dane was replaced at half time by Amad
The midfielder was tenacious and sat deep to sweep up behind Mainoo
allowing his younger counterpart more freedom to progress in the double pivot
loose passes let the Uruguayan down and the pivot struggled to match up to the Bees’ midfield trio
Ugarte dropped further back and looked more comfortable
The midfielder is desperately trying to make a case for himself ahead of the Red Devils’ Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club
Linking up well with Garnacho after a sliced clearance from Flekken
the youngster set his winger free and kickstarted the move for Mason Mount’s opener - not a bad start
the young midfielder failed to create much else and Eriksen's introduction felt necessary
Amass’ return to the first team was destined to be a challenging afternoon facing up against Bryan Mbeumo and Michael Kayode
the academy star looked out of his depth against one of the Premier League’s strongest wingers and struggled to contain their attacks or offer anything going forwards
An opportunity came in the second half as he brought down a cross in Brentford’s area but the finish left a lot to be desired and sailed into the stands
Mount managed a goal on his return to Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup despite his side’s poor performance
A fantastic run and finish from the Englishman saw him score his second goal for Manchester United
the first also coming against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium just over a year ago
Mount should have had an assist after crossing to Garnacho at the end of the first half but his colleague could only produce a horrendous miss
The winger provided a quality assist for Mason Mount’s opener
latching on to a loose slice from Flekken and neatly playing off of Mainoo before setting off down the left and releasing a deadly ball into the penalty area
but only acted as a consolation to round off a sad display in West London
a number of loose passes and a huge missed chance to equalise before half time tainted the young attacker’s performance
Chido Obi became the youngest player to start a Premier League match for Manchester United
Obi failed to move mountains and led a limp Manchester United frontline which managed just one shot in the first half
Acting as a target man for the Red Devils’ deep lying defensive line
Obi struggled to hold up play or bring his wide players into the game
A reluctant introduction from Amorim who clearly wanted to rest the centre half for Thursday
cutting out an important counter-attack early in the second half
Brentford still found their way through the Red Devils’ back line far too easily
Amad struggled to create on the right hand side and
after being brought on to bring some life to the United attacking line
He managed a good goal in added time as Flekken poorly allowed the ball to fly between his legs but will need to provide a lot more on Thursday if Manchester United are hoping to reach the Europa League final
Too little too late from the Ivorian winger
Came on to join Maguire and bring some much-needed experience to the third youngest starting eleven in Premier League history
their introduction didn’t stop Brentford easily creating chances and putting the game to bed with Schade and Wissa scoring
The Dane came on to bring some experience into the midfield and push further forwards alongside Mainoo
Eriksen instantly tried to unleash Garnacho with a first-time ball over the back line and put a dangerous cross into the area later on
the substitutions didn’t have enough to turn the game around
Eight changes were made to the side which brushed aside Athletic Club 3-0 in a remarkable performance and even that backfired because Matthijs de Ligt got injured
Youngsters like Tyler Fredricson got another chance to impress, while Chido Obi broke records with his maiden start for Man Utd
Both impressed to varying degrees, but the youngster who’s ready to make an impact wasn’t even in the squad. Ruben Amorim missed a trick and it prevented a star from being born
Before the game, it was pretty much certain that the likes of Tyler Fredricson, Harry Amass
and Chido Obi would start as they were already on the first-team squad fringes
Amorim had also confirmed that Noussair Mazraoui was ‘dead’ after Athletic and couldn’t possibly start another game just two days after
He added that Patrick Dorgu was also ‘tired’ so the chances were that there would be wholesale changes to the increasingly demanding wing-back position
as Amass came in while Dorgu shifted to the right side
Kamason has been thriving in the academy and with Mazraoui needing management and Dorgu tired
there was a clear way for him to at least come off the bench and limit Dorgu’s minutes
Amorim didn’t think he was as ready as his game at the academy level showed him to be and thus
the opportunity to create a star was missed
It’s all well and good playing the likes of Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen in the remaining PL games but the reality is that they won’t be here next season
The same can be said for many other players too if Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to repeat Ruben Amorim’s Sporting trick at Old Trafford in the summer
it makes sense to start drip-feeding youngsters into the team and a better chance will never be here now that the league campaign is a write-off
Amorim’s bench vs Brentford was effectively the XI that started against Athletic minus a few players so they didn’t really get proper mental and physical rest
Putting players like Kamason, Jack Moorhouse
and Sekou Kone on the bench should be the play here from a long-term POV because testing their readiness is far more important than giving minutes to players who won’t be here in two months time
Amorim missed a trick here with Kamason’s exclusion and the hope will be that the same is not repeated in the next PL fixture
The Red Devils tasted their whopping 16th Premier League defeat of the season after Brentford’s 4-3 win over Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium

Luke Shaw has been easing his return to the Manchester United first team under Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim after another injury-hit season at Old Trafford
has been limited to only eight appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign
Shaw started the match against Brentford as the left-sided centre-back in Amorim’s tactical system for United and he only played the first half of the 4-3 defeat
The United defender served as captain after Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench and Amorim subbed Shaw off for Leny Yoro in the second half
United fans took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and couldn’t hold back their feelings over Shaw’s disappointing performance for the Red Devils.
this should definitely be Luke Shaw’s LAST [sic] season at the club
“Luke Shaw provided none of his experience in the first half,” another added
A third Red Devils supporter tweeted: “Starting a match with Luke Shaw is scarier [than being without Bruno Fernandes].”
Somebody else posted: “Luke Shaw has been woeful since his return from injury… I miss Shawberto Carlos – all focus [is] on the second leg against [Athletic] Bilbao now.”
While a fifth argued: “Luke Shaw has overstayed his welcome and needs to be sold at this point
Time to accept it just hasn’t worked out.”
Another United fan claimed: “For our own [sake]
“Luke Shaw [is] always unavailable and now a liability now that he’s available,” a seventh suggested
And an eighth simply commented: “I hope Luke Shaw is on the transfer list.”

Speaking after the scoreline at the Gtech Community Stadium, United manager Amorim insisted that he was cautious of Shaw after Matthijs de Ligt’s injury
“I don’t know so I’m really concerned – not about Thursday,” he said on Sky Sports, as per BBC Sport
“We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect and have players for Thursday
but I’m more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season.”

Chido Obi-Martin set a new club record by making his first Premier League start for Manchester United
The teenage striker was named in the starting line-up by Ruben Amorim for Sunday's 4-3 defeat to Brentford
It came at 17 years and 156 days old for Obi-Martin
making him the youngest-ever player to start a Premier League match for United
The youngster was also making his seventh appearance for the Red Devils first-team since arriving at Old Trafford
Obi-Martin completed a move from Arsenal back in October to link up with the United academy
He was handed his Premier League debut in February, appearing as a substitute against Fulham
Despite that, he has already scored 12 times in just 10 appearances for their Under-18s.
Explaining his decision to hand Obi-Martin his first league start, Amorim told Sky Sports: "We need to focus a lot on our young players.
"For me, it is not a massive game for Chido. I know it's important for Chido, but I don't want a lot of pressure on Chido.
I feel he is ready to cope with the demands of the Premier League."
he added: "It is really hard because we want to improve in the table
In this moment I think everyone can understand our choice."
Amorim made a string of changes from Thursday's win over Athletic Bilbao for the clash with the Bees
academy starlets Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson were also included in the starting line-up
The Portuguese's XI had an average age of just 22 years and 270 days
It is the third youngest starting line-up in Premier League history and the youngest since 2009
Middlesbrough set the current record of 20 years and 181 days against Fulham back in May 2006
The Red Devils took a giant leap towards the Europa League final in midweek
Their victory in Spain means they will defend a 3-0 lead in this week's second leg
a win at Brentford on Sunday would lift them up to 13th in the table
The Red Devils have endured a disastrous 2024-25 Premier League season and Manchester United languish in 15th place ahead of the Brentford match
Ruben Amorim’s side’s last outing in the Premier League came in April and United snatched a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last Sunday

United comfortably beat 10-man Athletic Club in the Europa League at the San Mames Stadium and the Red Devils secured a 3-0 scoreline on Thursday in Bilbao
The Europa League run has taken an important precedent for Amorim’s men and the tournament is United’s only hope of ensuring their place in Europe next season
Amorim could still sign off the 2024-25 campaign with his first major silverware as United manager and the Europa League would also offer Champions League football

Ruben Amorim had to rotate his Manchester United first-team squad for the Premier League clash on Sunday and Chido Obi-Martin was deployed to lead the frontline
Chido Obi came in for struggling United striker Rasmus Hojlund and the Red Devils talent made his history with his first start for the Premier League club
The United youth academy product has become the youngest player to start a Premier League match for the Red Devils at the age of 17 years and 156 days
Chido arrived at United in 2024 after he left Arsenal’s youth academy set-up and the Red Devils striker has been securing important first-team minutes this season
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the Brentford match, Amorim said (via BBC Sport): “We need to focus a lot on our young players.
but I don’t want a lot of pressure on Chido.”
pointed out that Chido lacked the essential “service” that he needed against Brentford on Sunday
No service,” one Red Devils supporter said
Another X user wrote: “Someone give Chido Obi some service.”
Somebody else commented: “Chido Obi [is] now witnessing what Rasmus has faced majority of the season… Zero service outside [of] Bruno [Fernandes].”
What a goal from Alejandro Garnacho! 💫 pic.twitter.com/eAqCjtHoZd
A fourth United fan tweeted: “We need service to Chido
“Chido has gotten no service,” another posted
While a sixth suggested: “Chido Obi-Martin getting a true taste of what it’s like for current Man Utd strikers… gross lack of service
This is why I haven’t put even a little blame on Rasmus Hojlund.”
“Chido didn’t stand a chance today without Bruno,” somebody else argued
And an eighth added: “Look at Chido going into good spaces but no Bruno to pick him out.”

United will now resume their crucial 2024-25 Europa League run on Thursday evening
with the Red Devils hosting Athletic Club for the second-leg semi-final tie
Kick-off for the Europa League showdown is at 8pm UK time at Old Trafford and the Red Devils hold a 3-0 advantage on the aggregate scoreline from the first-leg result.
United or Athletic Club will face either fellow semi-finalists Bodo/Glimt or Tottenham in the Europa League final on 21st May at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.
Not many Manchester United fans would have been overly optimistic of a win away at Brentford
Outstanding in Europe, and drab domestically, full focus is now on winning the Europa League, and a much rotated team were beaten 4-3 at Brentford on May 4
United opened the scoring with a strike from Mason Mount
Late strikes from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad pulled the scoreline back to look more respectable
A player who drew some praise after the game was one of the heroes against Athletic Club, Manuel Ugarte
Manuel Ugarte was the heart of Manchester United’s midfield with Brazilian ace Casemiro given a well-earned rest
along with a rare break for Bruno Fernandes
former player Ben Thornley explained: “He was brilliant
He was far and away the best player in the Manchester United shirt today.”
which former defender David May admitted he felt was a little surprising
“I was surprised the manager played Ugarte the for the whole 97 minutes
I thought he might have taken him off for half an hour’s rest.”
Ugarte might end up being rested on Thursday for the second leg against Athletic Club with United 3-0 up
The Uruguayan ended up with an assist for Amad’s goal, this was his fourth assist in his last three games
Data provided via SofaScore shows how Ugarte completed 50 of 53 pass attempts
A lot of his impact came via the right-hand side of midfield
supporting his many inexperienced younger teammates
Thornley also reserved praise for Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho
who provided an assist for United’s first goal and scored the second from outside the box
He added: “Ganacho is is showing why everybody thinks he’s a class act with the goal that he scored
“His performances over these last few weeks have really sort of got to a stage where we hope in three weeks time
his most productive season ever for Manchester United
Manchester United are growing increasingly optimistic a deal for Matheus Cunha can soon be announced with the player’s father dropping a significant hint – and now Fabrizio Romano has rated the prospects of the Red Devils also adding Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo being signed to play alongside the Brazilian
Despite being on the cusp of reaching the Europa League final, Manchester United‘s form in the Premier League this season has not been good enough and portrays a side well behind the English game’s elite clubs
Ruben Amorim faces a huge summer rebuild to try and sign a squad of players capable of bringing his 3-4-2-1 formation to life and helping elevate the club back among the major forces of English football
with United’s tally of 42 goals in their 35 matches played in the Premier League some 39 short of the division’s top scorers
But with Amorim in a rush to fix those issues – the club are working hard behind the scenes to wrap up a deal for Cunha and also hope to sign a new No.9 this summer – reports in the Daily Telegraph on Sunday revealed that United are exploring a possible move for the £60m-rated Brentford forward Mbeumo
who has contributed 18 goals and seven assists from 39 appearances across all competitions this season
However, as per Romano, United are not currently planning a move to sign Mbeumo, though as the transfer guru hints, there remains the strong possibility that the £60m-rated Cameroon international will leave Brentford this summer after what was labelled an ‘open race’
Playing down talk of a United approach, Romano told Givemesport: “As far as I know
DON’T MISS 👉 Man Utd outcast Antony ‘gives his word’ to next club as bizarre Arsenal links emerge
Mbeumo has posted career-best figures under Thomas Frank this season
But with Mbeumo’s deal at the Gtech Stadium runs to summer 2026 – and while the Bees do have the option to extend that by a year – his electric form this season means hefty offers for his services are likely to arrive
Newcastle are also understood to be among his suitors
while Liverpool are also looking at the 22-times capped star as a possible long-term successor to Mo Salah
However, with Romano ruling out a move to Old Trafford as a possibility, United will instead put their energies into wrapping up the signing of Cunha as quickly as possible
To that end, United have a strong optimism that a deal is close to getting over the finishing line, with the player giving the move his green light and with the Brazilian set to sign a bumper contract at Old Trafford
Now the player’s father has also dropped a strong hint that a move is edging closer after liking a comment on the social media platform Instagram from a supporter which read ‘Welcome to United’ after Cunha snr had posted a pic of the player relaxing alongside Joao Gomes
Meanwhile, United’s hopes of generating additional income from their clause in Mason Greenwood’s Marseille contract are growing, amid claims the forward is pushing for a shock return to the Premier League and with two factors forcing his exit from the Ligue 1 giants
Elsewhere, United midfielder Mason Mount has strongly criticised the team’s performance against the Bees on Sunday
while head coach Amorim is in despair over the injury to Matthijs de Ligt
And finally, United are reportedly close to launching an official offer to sign a top-notch Brazilian midfielder with Amorim’s plans to pair him up with Manuel Ugarte in the engine room now coming to light.
When Ineos poached Chido Obi from Arsenal in the summer, Manchester United promised the young striker a clear pathway to the first team
The Red Devils kept their promise with Obi becoming United’s youngest-ever starter in a Premier League match on Sunday afternoon
Amorim has been full of praise for Obi this season and he put his trust in him to start against Brentford
While he was unable to get on the scoresheet
United fans reacted to Obi’s display
pointing out that he lacked any real service from his teammates
As a result, data provided by SofaScore shows that Obi endured a frustratingly quiet afternoon against Brentford
Obi played the full 90 minutes against Brentford but only managed 18 touches on the ball – an average of one every five minutes
including one late in the second half which was well blocked by a defender
Obi protected the ball well and completed nine of his 10 attempted passes
Obi will get the chance to show just how lethal he can be inside the 18-yard box
Throughout the entire season, Rasmus Hojlund has faced heavy criticism for his inability to impact matches
Hojlund took just 15 touches in the Manchester derby last month – a match where he found himself completely isolated
United have struggled all season to get their striker involved in play
Obi suffered the same fate against Brentford
READ MORE: ‘Comet of the Year’… Chido Obi wins prestigious award after incredible Man United breakthrough
Amorim has spoke about United’s need to “help our strikers” this season
and Obi’s display on Sunday proved that it is more of a systematic issue than a personnel one
Signing a new striker will be a top priority this summer
but it’s equally important that United’s creative players find a way to get the striker on the ball
Man Utd have been linked with a move for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo along with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha ahead of the summer transfer window
The Red Devils have had a miserable season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 15th heading into the final three matches of the campaign
Amorim’s men are already guaranteed to finish the season as the worst Man Utd team to have played in the Premier League
even if they win their remaining three fixtures
One of their main issues this season has been scoring goals with just five Premier League sides scoring fewer than them this term
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have come in for lots of criticism this season with the duo only scoring seven Premier League goals between them this term
Amorim has struggled to get the best out of his group with the Man Utd squad struggling to adapt to his style of play
And now Man Utd want to support him in the transfer window with a number of signings and one of the main areas they want to improve is in attack
On Sunday, the Daily Telegraph reported that Brentford winger Mbeumo is now a ‘target’ for Man Utd ‘as well as’ Wolves Cunha as they look to overhaul their front line
The Brentford man is ‘high on list of potential targets as Amorim looks to bolster squad’ and Man Utd are ‘ready to join the race’ for Mbeumo ‘when competition for the £60 million-rated Brentford forward intensifies during the summer transfer window’
is a target for United in the summer but has been most effective through the middle as a No 9
‘Interest in Mbeumo is independent of the Cunha deal
with the former Troyes forward regarded as one of the best wide forwards in the Premier League.’
But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is less sure of how serious the Red Devils’ interest in Mbeumo is with “many clubs” looking to tie up a deal to sign the Brentford forward in the summer transfer window
Romano wrote in his GiveMeSport newsletter: “As far as I know, the main target remains Cunha. For Mbeumo there will be many clubs involved, so it’s an open race.”
Brentford boss Thomas Frank recently admitted that Brentford are a “selling club” but that he wants to keep Mbeumo and his other top stars “forever”.
Frank said: “I’m the head coach, I want my best players to stay forever. I know that Bryan is very happy being here at Brentford, he’s thriving, doing well and playing fantastic. What happens in the future? I don’t know. I’ve said many times: we are a selling club.
“But at the same time we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world who aren’t selling clubs. So, of course, if the right price – and that’s going to be expensive – is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open for it. But I’m very happy he’s here, and I’m convinced that Bryan will still be happy playing football here.”

Man Utd started on the back foot as expected as Brentford threatened multiple times but it was Ruben Amorim’s men who landed the first blow through Mason Mount against the run of play.
Brentford got their deserved goal soon after through their usual set-piece shenanigans, with Man Utd losing multiple duels in the box leading to the equaliser.
The lead was in the bag for the Bees in contentious circumstances as they took advantage of Matthijs de Ligt’s injury to head home from close range, the Dutchman coming off.
Two second-half goals from Kevin Schade and Yoane Wissa summed up a terrible day at the office but late goals from Amad and Garnacho gave Brentford a late scare.
Ultimately, a scare is what it remained as United lost but it was nonetheless a spirited display.
Uncertain in nearly every moment but the scoreline would’ve been much worse if not for his saves.
A difficult moment or two against Kevin Schade but broadly the best of the back three.
Came off with an injury to add to Ruben Amorim’s headache.
Uncharacteristically poor with the ball and scored an own goal to cap off a chastening game. Has probably played himself out of a starting spot on Thursday.
Struggled in the buildup similar to Shaw and got outmuscled in the air for Brentford’s second.
His “Welcome to the PL” game as Brentford targeted him for physicality and he was found wanting almost every time.
Showed good press resistance and and looks like a player at the top of his game. Brentford away was the ultimate “proper English football” test and he was up to it despite the result.
Nice pass in the buildup for United’s opener but, much like his teammates, too weak at times.
Smart assist for Mount and a brilliant finish to get one of his own. United’s only reliable attacking outlet.
A bright presence with his off-the-ball runs and was rewarded for making the run United’s strikers most often don’t.
A chastening game for the youngster that will hopefully see him learn and improve. Thankless outing against Brentford’s monsters as he barely got a sniff. Improved late on to show glimpses of his potential.
Some iffy moments in the air but generally a much more confident presence these days.
Generally composed but some difficult moments in buildup which plagued the whole team.
Tried his usual tricks and flicks and scored late on to give Brentford a scare. Has picked up from where he left off before his injury.
His progressive passing was much-needed and Ruben Amorim would love to have a physical version of this player next season.
No standout moments and no errors either.
It was almost a perfect game for Ruben Amorim barring Matthijs de Ligt’s injury, an update on which will be sorely awaited by Man Utd fans
the senior players who did play acquitted themselves well and most importantly
One youngster stood out to MUTV pundit and former Red Devil David May
who was deemed ‘different class’ despite playing in a youthful team in a loss
A major benefit of having all the eggs in the Europa League basket is that it has inevitably given Ruben Amorim the choice to try out youngsters in the league
An away game against Brentford is the quintessential “Welcome to Premier League” game because Thomas Frank’s team combines physicality with game intelligence
For a player to come through a game against them in the starting stage of his career with his reputation enhanced speaks volumes about his potential
That is the situation Tyler Fredricson finds himself in after he was called “different class” by David May after the game
May said: “Tyler [Fredricson] was different class
Amorim also praised Fredricson’s efforts after the game
saying he was subbed off to protect him rather than an issue with his performance
When it comes to breaking through at Man Utd
especially in the defensive half of the pitch
nobody would have picked Fredricson as a contender
However, after Fredricson shone against Wolves and followed it up against Brentford
he’s close to permanently establishing himself at Man Utd after De Ligt’s injury
clearing the way for Fredricson to almost certainly start the remaining PL fixtures
If he can come through those with as much credit to his name as he has the previous two
Amorim will have a new first-team player for next season
That’s quite a story coming out of games that are written off!
